One very subtle but speaking moment in P&P that I don't think I've ever seen anyone talk about is this one:
“Yes, and her petticoat; I hope you saw her petticoat, six inches deep in mud, I am absolutely certain, and the gown which had been let down to hide it not doing its office.”
We all get caught up on the "six inches deep in mud" thing (and it is a very funny and versatile line)—but that misses the depth of the characterisation of Elizabeth that's developed in this sentence.
What Mrs. Hurst means is that Elizabeth had, at some point, been wearing her gown (this would have been morning dress) pinned up to show the bottom portion of her petticoat. This was pretty common in the very late 18th and early 19th centuries: an outer petticoat was not really considered an undergarment, but something that could be shown, at least in part. Gowns might be shorter than the petticoat; or very sheer to show a coloured petticoat; or slit up the front or sides; or entirely open in the front (called "négligée" or, racistly, "mameluke" style). A lot of petticoats were embroidered around the bottom (and sometimes in a pattern up the center as well) in a way that would be visible under these conditions. See these examples:
"Costume Parisiennes," The Ladies' Monthly Museum Vol 3 (April 1816), p. 231:
Evening Dress.—Round dress of soft white satin, made short enough to discover the muslin-petticoat underneath, which is ornamented with two full quillings of fine lace; the satindress finished at the border by four rows of scarlet velvet [...]. (see the illustration for this one here)
"London Fashions," The Repository of arts, literature, commerce, manufactures, fashions and politics (May 1, 1819), p. 304, plate 31:
A jaconic muslin petticoat, ornamented round the bottom with four rows of muslin trimming, composed of narrow welts finished with edging. Over this is an open robe, with a plain high body [...]. (description of left image above)
Ibid., no. 82 vol. 14 (Oct. 1815), p. 240, plate 22:
A cambric muslin petticoat, ornamented at the feet with a double flounce of French work, appliqued with a narrow heading of the same; the body, from the shoulder to the neck, gathered full into narrow trimming, corresponding with the heading of the flounce; a military collar, frilled with the French work; short French négligée, open in the iront, and trimmed entirely round to correspond. (description of right image above)
If Mrs. Hurst is correct, Elizabeth had either been wearing her dress pinned up anyway, or pinned it up specifically for the walk—and then, after she had arrived at Netherfield but before she had been announced, taken the pins out and let the skirt of the dress down to try to hide the dirt on her petticoat. This is an amount of forethought that suggests that she actually does care about how she looks, or about appearing tidy, or about what the party at Netherfield thinks of her.
She doesn't care enough to keep her from seeing Jane (“I shall be very fit to see Jane—which is all I want"), or enough to wish to avoid the walk (Mr. Bennet says “Is this a hint to me, Lizzy, to send for the horses?", which coming from him I think is tantamount to an engraved invitation to send for the carriage). But she cares just enough to briefly plan how best to minimise the damage, and decide to pin up her skirt before walking—or at least to take a moment to think about how she would appear to an observer, check her skirts, and take a step to improve her appearance slightly, once she had arrived.
Jennifer Ehle looks very cute and charming in the scene in the 95 version where she's walking to Netherfield and accidentally jumps in a mud puddle and looks at her skirts and shrugs like, oh well! But I don't think it's very "Elizabeth."
Elizabeth is sort of the Goldilocks of ladyhood. She doesn't have the rigid adherence to conduct-book logic that Mary has, or the sneering sophistication that the Bingley sisters have, or the impulsive, pleasure-seeking anarchic energy that Lydia has. She's neither very fashionable, nor completely without a sense of propriety, decency, or morality (whatever these words mean according to 19th-century mores). I think takes that emphasise only her wildness and distinctness from fashionable ladies, and takes that emphasise only her respectability, are both missing something.

You often mentioned that to start off Etsy/ Amazon etc offer cheap Chinese copies of devices which are good to get an idea of what fits.
My thought has always gone to the health risk that there is in buying anything that comes from China and is cheap. Do you have any advice on how to avoid stuff made of harmful plastics/covered in toxic chemicals?
🔏 Okay, buckle in, we're going for a ride.
Very few people in our consumer society know how anything is made. I'm not joking. Even the simplest items most of us buy are mass produced. When I was growing up, most kids had been to "the factory in town" on a class trip to see things produced. I have seen dozens of different kinds of things being made, from baked goods, to bottled soft drinks, to wine, and of course, to manufactured goods (consumer and industrial products). Now, nobody sees these anymore, and no body gets to have any underlying k edge of how things are made, or how good, ie, quality products differ from crappy consumer items. Hell, most schools no longer have regular shop class anymore (I'm told it's a liability 🙄).
All that is a lead up to this: most consumer driven products (like plastic chastity cages) coming from China are cheap because a) they did not have to so k any mo ey I to development costs, and b) the products are cheap enough so that most people don't care if it breaks, and c) most people can't tell the difference between an okay product and a high end one. A $10 crappy product might have sharp edges and burrs, while an okay $30 product won't. But few people will notice or care about the difference between the $30 cage and the $130 or even the $300 cage.
Now, that said, I am wearing a Chinese made A272 cage that I bought about seven or eight years ago, and have been wearing steadily (and now permanently) since. Did I get lucky? Maybe. I've bought other Chinese stainless steel cages just to test them out, and most were junk. And even this particular cage came with a crappy knockoff Burg Wachter ME/2 barrel lock. I ended up buying a few more, better quality locks as backups.
Okay, I got that off my chest. 😅
Here's the problem with buying those cheap Chinese cages: you can't tell what you're getting. The Cobra knockoffs have been reported to have color dye that irritates some people. The locks will probably need to be replaced with decent ones. The molds will probably leave the cages with sharp edges that could irritate sensitive skin. And don't even get me started on the quality of the plastic. Many years ago I bought a cage that was advertised as stainless steel. The cage was, but the rings were cheap metal with chrome plating. That would have been a major reaction for a lot of other guys.
So while I do suggest that some people experiment with the cheap cages in order to get a feel for what works, I also follow that up with suggesting that when they figure out what works, to use that information to help pick out a quality cage. A few months in and out of a crappy cage will probably not poison you; the harmful chemicals in those plastics are fairly well bound up.
And until Consumer Reports starts reviewing them, then about the best you can hope for is reading the various discussion groups to glean whatever information you can.

Vulkan is an Indian Mom
Ok so i was looking at this image of Vulkan in what i assume is what he wears while doing blacksmithing work
like the guy is basically just wearing a dress if you ever worked anywhere close to a forge you know that that while we all wish we could wear that not just for style points but also because the forge oven can actually get THAT hot... its a a guaranteed way to for a trip to the ER
For reference this is what you usually wear:
If your casting or welding something (which vulkan definitely does because why would he just not??????) you usually even wear leather pants and a leather jacket.
Also i dont think i need to mention this but touching your work straight from the forge oven is ALWAYS a very bad idea. Thats what you use tongs for
Now i do get that hes Primarch doesnt affect him cause super human that and all and thats not what im here to argue (although i do think Vulkan butting heads with imperial OSHA would be a conceptually very funny crack-fic )
What i am here to argue is that Vulkan forging and doing generall metal work is like an Indian Mom making rotis.
now if you never had the experience of an Indian mother making you rotis its basically a fact that they don't use their bare hands for everything: they will form it, trow it on the pan, turn the hot roti, get it on your plate all without burning themselves somehow. Meanwhile everyone else has tried this at least once failed and proceeded to use a spatula.
Now my personal headcannon is that that is exactly what Vulkan is like in the forge: he will straight up just reach into to the hot forge oven with his bare hands to get something quickly to show how its done and is somehow fine meanwhile everyone else around him is in full safety gear using thongs to while trying not to get burned (as far as i understand the salamanders forges are way hotter than average). and hes just out here winging everything not even wearing gloves and remaining oblivious of the casual show of "fuck all-ness" he just gave.
My second headcannon is that Vulkan is the only one who can do this (big E doesn't count he can just reality to do what he wants) no ohter primarch has ever gotten close to this level of winging it in manufacturing . I can imagine Dorn or Perturabo probably tried at one point but it just ended with burning their hands. Vulkan remains the only true incarnation of spirit of Indian moms.

Today's drabble is 'First Kiss'. This is a quick little drabble set in the Moonlight Serenade universe. This is from Padmé's POV during a visit back home. Takes place summer 1952~
---
Padmé wondered if Anakin knew about all the subtle ways Obi-Wan cared for him.
She wondered if he knew that Obi-Wan always stood to his right, their shoulders brushing, only a few inches of space between them as they navigated through crowds and public spaces. That it was Obi-Wan who protected Anakin’s injured side, blocking it from view and from touch, always mindful of where he was in relation to Anakin’s arm, keeping it safe within the shadows of his form.
Or how when Anakin’s manufactured bravado and fake cheer would wear down, instead replaced with weariness and irritation, Obi-Wan would tilt his head upward just to hear Anakin’s soft voice grow ever softer, and to breath in the words Anakin spoke. Obi-Wan never asked Anakin to speak up, to put on a show, to smile and laugh and coddle those he normally might disappoint. Instead he changed his own demeanour to fit that of Anakin’s, bringing his energies down until they swayed together like reeds in a lake.
Or when Anakin’s smile became tight, his shoulder tense, his eyes glassy with pain, Obi-Wan would grip his residual arm and hold. A friendly gesture, to the unknowing gaze, but filled with so much love and care it sometimes hurt to see. Obi-Wan would replace Anakin’s pain with something else to focus on - the stern yet still tender touch of a lover. The ache in his arm and the stinging in his skin would be replaced with the heat of Obi-Wan’s palm and the strength in his hand, grounding and steady as Anakin trembled through the memories of an agony not yet finished.
She knew, of course, Anakin noticed the most obvious things. Like how Obi-Wan would hold his plate at dinner events and pile it high with foods, asking Anakin what he wanted as they went down the tables, making sure Anakin’s belly was sated before he’d see to his own needs. Or how he tied Anakin’s tie and helped with the laces of his shoes when asked; how he styled his hair in the morning, and ruined in the evening; how he shaved along the curve of Anakin’s jaw and down the stretches of his neck; or how he cut the meats and vegetables for their dinners while Anakin did what he did best in the kitchen - make a mess.
And other stills, that Obi-Wan didn’t know she knew. Things more intimate that Anakin would confess over the phone, his voice bright with cheer as he detailed the latest night of passion, Padmé curling the phone cord over her finger as she laughed and sneaked glances into the living room to make sure no one could overheard the detailed descriptions.
Padmé wondered if he knew. Because she did.
“Padmé?”
Padmé blinked and turned to her mother. They were stood on the back steps of her parents estate, summer sun shining down on the backyard party. Vancouver had rolled out the nice weather for her visit, the skies clear and the winds gentle, the smell of roses fresh in the air. She’d missed this.
“Sorry, mother,” she said, and kissed her cheek quickly before venturing down into the party, a tray of cocktails in her hand that she’d offered to take out to the party.
The grass was cool on her bare feet, and she greeted those she passed by with a smile and an offer of a drink. By the time she’d reached Anakin and Obi-Wan, the tray was empty save for two glasses of gin and tonic.
“Fancy a drink?” she asked.
Anakin’s hand was occupied by a plate with the leftovers of cake on it, so Obi-Wan - as was expected - took both glasses and raised one to her in appreciation.
“Lovely party,” Obi-Wan said. He glanced around the space, his aviators sitting on the bridge of his nose, hiding away his blue eyes that Anakin had described to Padmé more times than once all those years ago. “Thank you for inviting us.”
“You’re welcome, though I’m sorry I haven’t been able to chat much.”
“It’s been six years since your last visit,” Anakin said, the word ‘six’ sitting heavy in the air. “It’s natural people would want to spend time with you.”
His shrug brought Padmé’s attention to his shirt. It was a pretty green silk and short-sleeved, the lapels broad and the top few buttons opened. Padmé could see Anakin’s scars along his chest, and his residual arm poked out at the bottom of his sleeve, exposing it to the world.
“I like your shirt,” Padmé said.
Anakin smiled, though it seemed hesitant. “Obi-Wan bought it for me.”
Adoration filled Padmé then. Of course he had, because he knew Anakin wouldn’t buy it for himself. Because he still cared what others thought; still hid from the world despite it all; still faltered where confidence would be best.
But Obi-Wan knew how beautiful Anakin was, and made Anakin believe it. If only for a short while.
“Ani, I forgot my pocket mirror in my purse back inside. Could you go and grab it for me?” Anakin made move to leave, but Padmé stopped him to grab his plate, replacing it with the drink tray. “And take this back inside, will you? Give it to Samantha.”
Anakin rolled his eyes but did as instructed, his long legs carrying him quickly through the throngs of people. He still cut quite the image, broad shoulders and slim waist making him look more a model from one of the catalogs, than a mechanic with a penchant for hot-rod racing.
When she turned back to Obi-Wan, she didn’t have to see his eyes to know where he was looking.
“That shirt really does look lovely, doesn’t it,” Obi-Wan mused with a soft smile.
Padmé laughed and dragged him in for a kiss. It was quick and sweet, and when she pulled away the greys in Obi-Wan’s beard were painted in red lipstick.
“Padmé,” Obi-Wan mumbled, his cheeks a delightful pink that matched the ruby tones of her lips. He leaned a little in, voice low enough for her to hear. “Not that I’m not flattered, but I’m a married man.”
She giggled again, but when she gripped his arm and held she couldn’t help but squeeze down as she spoke, voice serious, her brows furrowed. “I just wanted to say thank you. For the things you do, the things you say. For who you are. Thank you.”
Obi-Wan’s smile softened, and he nodded quickly. “No need to thank me. But I cherish the sentiment all the same.”
When she pulled away she grabbed a napkin and passed it to Obi-Wan and took one of the gins from his grasp. By the time Anakin returned the lipstick had been wiped away, and Padmé watched as Obi-Wan quietly filled the empty space next to Anakin’s right side once more. She ended up keeping the gin and tonic, while Obi-Wan and Anakin subtly shared the one, lips placed over the spot where the other had drank, like a soft kiss shared between the pair, known only to the trio stood beneath the summer sun.

The Imperial German Army or Deutsches Heer was the name given to the combined land and air forces (excluding the Marine-Fliegerabteilung maritime aviation formations of the Navy) of the German Empire. It was formed after the unification of Germany under Prussian leadership in 1871 and dissolved in 1919, after the defeat of the German Empire in World War I.
Tech Specs
Coverted From "Battlefield 1" Game, Credits belongs to Electronic Arms
This Particular Uniform Belongs to German Imperial During Early Stages of war (1914-1916) since Later Uniform is more simplified.

As with all classes, one can identify which gun a certain class is using, with players holding SMGs having their weapons at their shoulders while shotguns are held at their waist. Rifleman - Light Version of "Assault" Team, Wearing Exact configuration of said team. but only wearing A Rifle pouch. Most common sight in WWI German Front
Medic - Wearing tunics, with crutches and backpacks on the back and grey Stalhelms. With smaller details being ammo pouches around their stomach and water canteen on the right side. Medics hold their rifles generally at their shoulders, while running they point them downwards.
Support - Wearing trench coats, with heavy backpacks on their back and the Gaede Helmet. With smaller details being ammo pouches around their stomach with additional pouches underneath them, water canteen on their right side. Supports hold their Machine guns around their waist.
Scout - Wearing a trench coat and a Stalhelm. With smaller details being ammo pouches around their stomach with additional pouches underneath their right side and a sidearm holster on their left side. Snipers hold their rifles at the shoulder when walking and point them downward while running, similar to the Medic.
HELMET
Stahlhelm M1916 - The Stahlhelm M1916 is an improved version of the German steel helmet introduced during World War I. Similar to the M1915, it features a distinctive design characterized by a rounded shape, a flared skirt, and a protruding visor. The M1916 model included enhancements to address issues with the earlier version, providing better protection to the wearer. It became a standard-issue helmet for German forces during World War I and continued to see use in various forms during subsequent conflicts. this is the Earliest version of Infamous German Stahlhelm that first fielded inside Imperial German Army. So don't Expect Better Protection like The Later model or WW2 Models. this also Include A German Tricolor Camouflage Designed by General Erich Ludendorff that Eventually Fielded in 1918.
Stahlhelm Stirnpanzer - Due low Durability and Protection of M1916 Stahlhelm, German Ministry of War Issued Minor Upgrade. a The brow plate (Stirnpanzer), which was fitted to the front of the helmet to provide additional protection to the wearer. However, it's weight (2 kg) meant that it could only be worn for short periods. Approximately 50,000 brow plates were manufactured.
The Pickelhaube - The Iconic Helm From Prussian Era now Brought back to WWI Fronts. ickelhelm, is a spiked leather or metal helmet that was worn in the 19th and 20th centuries by Prussian and German soldiers of all ranks, firefighters and police. Although it is typically associated with the Prussian Army, which adopted it in 1842–43, the helmet was widely imitated by other armies during that period. It is still worn today as part of ceremonial wear in the militaries of certain countries, such as Sweden, Chile, and Colombia. This Particular Model is cloth helmet cover (Überzug) and For Cavalary use.
Gas Mask
During World War I, Chemical warfare was a significant and notorious aspect of World War I, and Germany played a key role in its early development. The Germans were the first to use chemical weapons on a large scale, introducing chlorine gas at the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915. This marked a disturbing escalation in warfare, as chemical agents were employed to harm and incapacitate enemy soldiers.
The use of chemical weapons by both sides, including mustard gas and phosgene, led to devastating consequences, causing widespread injuries and fatalities. The introduction of gas masks became essential for soldiers to protect themselves from these toxic substances. Despite the horrific nature of chemical warfare, it did not significantly alter the course of the conflict, and international agreements such as the Geneva Protocol of 1925 later sought to ban the use of chemical and biological weapons in warfare. Gummimaske 1915 - The Gummimaske 1915, also known as the GM 15, was a German gas mask used during World War I. It featured a rubber face mask with glass eyepieces and a filter canister containing layers of absorbent materials to protect against chemical warfare agents. The design aimed to provide effective protection for soldiers against the poisonous gases used on the battlefield during the war. The Gummimaske 1915 was an essential piece of equipment for troops exposed to the threat of gas attacks during this period.
GM-17 Ledershutzmaske was introduced in 1917 to combat chemical weapons used by both sides in the First World War. It replaced the GM15 mask. It was another iteration of the German gas mask used during World War I. Similar to its predecessor, the GM 15, it featured a rubber face mask with glass eyepieces and a filter canister. The design aimed to provide reliable protection against chemical warfare agents that were employed during the war. The GM 17 continued the improvements made in gas mask technology, enhancing the comfort and effectiveness of the mask for soldiers on the battlefield. Like other gas masks of the time, it played a crucial role in safeguarding soldiers against the threats posed by poisonous gases during World War I.

one-word writing prompts, intractable, mara/eris?
Clad in thermal underlayers and the loose head scarf she wears at rest, Eris regards the Reef-purple skin-pressure suit laid out on the bunk before her in preparation for the day's mission outside the ship. Her eyes linger on its glistening glass dome helmet, boots and gloves that look almost too fashionable to be protective equipment. Next to it, a tangle of harness webbing meant to hold armor plates, supply pouches, and life support units waiting for them near the airlock of the vessel.
The elegant tech stands in contrast to the rest of the objects scattered on Eris' bunk. She didn't have much time to pack for the journey, but still managed to snag some essentials from Sanctuary. A worn field blanket, hive tablets, a leather-bound journal, dried asphodelia bound together with a string of beads, a rucksack filled with carving tools, ritual objects and mundane necessities. Visible only by its green glow, the ahamkara bone shard is nestled among the folds, and her armor lay in a crumpled heap. In the brief time they've been traveling together, Eris has managed to stake out at least this part of the ship as her own. It's comforting in its familiarity, even if it's a reminder of a place that is anything but.
"Manufactured precisely to your specifications," Mara comments, strolling into the quarters in an identical garment. It's not too different from her usual attire, Eris notes, though she lacks the usual capelette or cloak from her Dreaming City uniform, no fur ruff or badge or sash either. Combined with the tight-fitting hood that flattens out her voluminous hair, she looks distressingly bare, fragile almost, like a bird plucked clean of her plumage.
She idly picks up the suit. In its inert state, it's stretchy, the densely woven network of wires inside bumpy under her fingertips. It feels pleasantly sturdy despite being so light, but she still puts it down after a moment.
"I appreciate the effort, Mara, but I have ways to protect myself."
"And they are clever. However, I think it's prudent that your magic be spared for what lies in wait on the approach to the Pyramid."
"You underestimate the reserves of my power. It takes little more effort than breathing."
"We are entering the vacuum of space. Eris. . ." There's a pointedness to Mara's voice that pricks at her ears. She's heard this tone more on this trip than in all their years of work together, though this is the first time on the journey she's felt certain <i>Mara herself</i> is behind it. "In our joint ventures, I've always given you the freedom to operate as you see fit, as you've given me. The mission ahead is dangerous, even by our standards, and harm coming to one of us could spell doom for both. For this reason, I must insist you use the best tools available."
"How are you sure mine aren't?"
"Because mine is made with thousands of years of Awoken astronautical research."
"I am not one of your people." She makes a sweeping gesture toward her armor and hive accoutrements, "This is what works for me."
Their gazes lock in a tense moment of silence. Eris tries not to feel impressed at how well Mara manages to maintain eye contact despite their mismatched numbers. Her emotions are inflamed enough that conceding even this would feel like a defeat.
"This isn't about the suit, is it?"
Eris attempts to gather her words and fails because they aren't usually hers to say. To think about saying them at all makes her feel unlike herself, flush with an uneasy, jittery warmth. She may hide from the petty and cruel strangers of the Tower, but among her confidants she's never felt particular embarrassment about her physical condition. Had Asher not dirtied his hands with ichor helping change her bandages in the infirmary? Had Ikora not felt her horns and scales when she washed her hair early in her recovery?
So why was she hesitant to slip out of her veil and bare her face in front of Mara? Why was she self-conscious around the woman with whom she'd shared almost everything else: hope, fears, plans, secrets, even the power of life and death? At the Battle of Saturn, she thought they'd crossed the boundary between their carefully curated personae into something more vulnerable, more intimate, but perhaps she underestimated the elegant wall they'd built, mistaking secrets slid through the cracks for its fall.
Prompted by Eris' silence, Mara tries continuing. "If you feel shy—"
" — I know I shouldn't be —"
"There is nothing wrong with that, but I assure you nothing you can show me will come as a shock—"
"I don't want you to look at me and see the face of your killer."
Nary a ripple of surprise across her porcelain face. Instead, she takes a step closer, places her hands loose across Eris' shoulders, her touch cool but comforting.
"Beloved, I could see only you."
Eris feels no need to ask for Mara's word, her promise sealed with a feather-soft touch of lips.

Christian Bale on "Batman Begins" (2005): "At first, I was somewhat hesitant to do the role. I mean, after all, Batman is an icon. But I remember, as clear as day, being at the grocery store the day the movie opened, and this little boy saw me. He couldn't have been more than five years old. He just walked right up to me and hugged me. He hugged me, and I was so moved by it that I hugged him back. Then he looked up at me and said, 'You're my hero.' And in that moment, I knew that not only as an actor that I had done my job, but that I had made the right decision to play Batman. And I've never looked back on my the decision to play Batman since."
Bale decided early on in the audition process that he didn't want to play Batman straight, but to play him as a rage-filled monster, figuring that it might polarize writer and director Christopher Nolan. To his delight, Nolan was thrilled with his off-kilter interpretation.
Heath Ledger was considered for the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman during this movie's early development before Ledger and Nolan agreed he was not right for the role. After this, he was cast as The Joker in "The Dark Knight" (2008), a role that won him an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
The infamous growl performed by Bale was much rougher in "The Dark Knight" than "Batman Begins," and has been parodied countless times due to its extreme nature. However, the common misconception is that Bale was fully responsible for this voice. The real voice, during filming, was more toned down, and then heightened to a rougher, grittier vibe during post-production under the decision of writer, producer, and director Nolan.
Bruce Wayne wears a new Batsuit in "The Dark Knight." This Batsuit was an improvement on the outfit from "Batman Begins", and made Bale more comfortable and agile in his performance. It was constructed from two hundred unique pieces of rubber, fiberglass, metallic mesh, and nylon (producing an impression of sophisticated technology), with elastic banding added for tightening the costume to fit Bale. The gauntlets had their razors made retractable and able to be fired. The suit's cowl was based on a motorcycle helmet and separated from the neck piece, allowing Bale to move his head left/right/up/down, and comes equipped with white eye lenses for when Batman turns on Bat-sonar. Bale got to keep the Batman mask from the movie after filming.
For "The Dark Knight Rises" (2012), The Batsuit consisted of one hundred ten separate pieces. The base layer was made of a polyester mesh, utilized by the military and high-tech sports manufacturers due to its breathability and moisture-retaining properties. Molded pieces of flexible urethane were then attached to the mesh to form the overall body armor plating. Carbon fiberpanels were placed inside the sections on the legs, chest, and abdomen. The new owl was sculpted from a cast of Bale's face and head to become a perfect fit for Bale. (IMDb)
Happy Birthday, Christian Bale! 🦇

ANOTHER EARTH, FILE 001 – BATMAN
Circa 2003-2007 – 'THE TANK YEARS'
Any world with Lex Luthors, Kord Industries, Mister Terrifics, alien invasions, etc., is going to have a substantially whack timeline for technological advancement. Another Earth's 2003 is, in some ways, real-world 2009 or 2010. So what happens to Batman's costume after seven-odd years of disaster after disaster, including the death of one of your young wards?
Folks, he's not wearin' hockey pads.
Anybody living through the Thanagarian Invasion alone might be motivated to re-examine how much armor they wear when going out to get pounded by super-strong sadists or power-mad alien despots. And with any field of technology, there's going to be a little awkward period where it looks clunky and uncomfortable – superhero costume design and manufacturing is no different. This is the Batsuit equivalent to a tank, and it behaves like one: clunky, heavy, hard to move around in, reliant on really durable but expensive-to-manufacture armor plating and prioritizing function over form. It's ugly. It's uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time. It takes a long time to put on and take off. It's sort of representative of the classic Bruce Wayne mindset of 'I'm just going to have to live with my discomfort and learn to function around it.'
It is, however, very effective; the benefit to having so much padding and plating is that it can hide the scaffolding for, let's say, a physique-enhancing exoskeleton. Criminals who thought they basically knew what they were in for whenever Batman shows up have to learn that now Batman can just straight up rip your car door off to get at you. If you hit him across the shoulders with a bat, your bat might break. Once again, Batman's reputation evolves to scare a new generation of criminals.
And he gets some new wonderful toys! This is the era in which the utility belt really fills up with weird shit. If you've played the Arkham games, this is where his kit develops along those lines – mini cameras, a multitool that fires his grapnel but can also shoot tracers or a taser, that kind of thing. Bat shark repellent or whatever. The batarangs are at their most diverse and most adaptive.
But the utility belt isn't the only thing that gets an expansion: near the end of this period of time, a new member of the bat-family appears: the Son of the Bat and Grandson of the Demon. Damian is on the scene, folks. And at this point, Bruce just decides, you know what? There's no LAW that says I have to ONLY have ONE Robin. I can have as many as I want! Tim and Damian are both Robin simultaneously, for all the friction that causes among the family.
We have one more to go!

He Fell from an SR-71 at 78,000ft! #shorts youtube.com/shorts/2ZMMrna… via @YouTube
DURING THE EARLY DAYS OF TESTING FOR THE LEGENDARY SR-71 BLACKBIRD, THERE WERE SOME HARROWING MISHAPS, THE DETAILS OF WHICH HAVE RARELY COME TO LIGHT.
ON JANUARY 25, 1966, TEST PILOT BILL WEAVER AND LOCKHEED FLIGHT TEST RECONNAISSANCE AND NAVIGATION SYSTEMS SPECIALIST JIM ZWAYER EXPERIENCED THEIR PLANE VANISHING AROUND THEM WHILE EXECUTING A TURN… AT MORE THAN 2,400 MILES PER HOUR.
The most memorable flight occurred on Jan. 25, 1966. Jim Zwayer, a Lockheed flight test reconnaissance and navigation systems specialist, and I were evaluating those systems on an SR-71 Blackbird test from Edwards AFB, Calif. We also were investigating procedures designed to reduce trim drag and improve high-Mach cruise performance. The latter involved flying with the center-of-gravity (CG) located further aft than normal, which reduced the Blackbird’s longitudinal stability.
We took off from Edwards at 11:20 a.m. and completed the mission’s first leg without incident. After refueling from a KC-135 tanker, we turned eastbound, accelerated to a Mach 3.2 cruise speed, and climbed to 78,000 ft., our initial cruise-climb altitude.
Several minutes into the cruise, the right engine inlet’s automatic control system malfunctioned, requiring a switch to manual control. The SR-71’s inlet configuration was automatically adjusted during supersonic flight to decelerate airflow in the duct, slowing it to subsonic speed before reaching the engine’s face. This was accomplished by the inlet’s center-body spike translating aft, and by modulating the inlet’s forward bypass doors. Normally, these actions were scheduled automatically as a function of Mach number, positioning the normal shock wave (where air flow becomes subsonic) inside the inlet to ensure optimum engine performance.
Without proper scheduling, disturbances inside the inlet could result in the shock wave being expelled forward–a phenomenon known as an “inlet unstart.”
The ejection seat had never left the airplane; I had been ripped out of it by the extreme forces, seat belt, and shoulder harness still fastened.
“Can I help you?” a voice said. Did I hear things? I must be hallucinating. Then I looked up and saw a guy walking toward me, wearing a cowboy hat. A helicopter was idling a short distance behind him. If I had been at Edwards and told the search-and-rescue unit that I would bail out over the Rogers Dry Lake at a particular time, a crew couldn’t have gotten to me as fast as that cowboy pilot had.
The gentleman was Albert Mitchell, Jr., owner of a vast cattle ranch in northeastern New Mexico. I had landed about 1.5 mi. from his ranch house–and from a hangar for his two-place Hughes helicopter
Bill Weaver was an SR 71 test flight pilot; he survived the crash. There were problems with the Faceplate on his helmet that needed to be corrected.. At 80,000 feet the temperature outside is -65°. Which is near the maximum altitude of a potential bail-out.
Bill Weaver was unable to see out of his face plate because of the ice buildup. An ejection out of the world's fastest man-breathing airplane is scary enough but not being able to see is terrifying!

youtube
His face plate was frozen. The result of this accident a heated face plate was manufactured, that required a battery pack and that worked.
There were several more accidents over the next 20+ years and all of the Air Force officers would survived their ejections. The only unfortunate death occurred to a test pilot who broke his neck.. Mitchell said he’d check on Jim. He climbed into his helicopter, flew a short distance away and returned about 10 min. later with devastating news: Jim was dead. Apparently, he had suffered a broken neck during the aircraft’s disintegration and was killed instantly. Mitchell said his ranch foreman would soon arrive to watch over Jim’s body until the authorities arrived. #HABUBRATS

ugh when is it my turn to have an irl kassandra i would do anything for her .
anyways what kinds of clothing styles, jobs, or just general day-to-day life (like their houses) do you think modern!kassie/eivor/soma would have?
Pssh, it's not like I've given this any extensive thought in the past or anything... That would be weird... Who would do that haha
I would let's go
Kassandra dresses like a dad who lost his passport in Tenerife on holiday and has been stuck cycling between the same 4 hawaiian shirts since three Tuesdays ago, but owns a few casual suits for work.
She's a historian and museum curator. Specialises in the history of weaponry, occasionally giving guest lectures on ancient swords at universities. Mention any type of weapon and she will not be able to stop herself from rambling about its evolution over the centuries.
Has a pottery wheel. You know that scene from Ghost (1990)? Yeah. Very reliable with the ladies.
Ikaros is her pet eagle, do not ask her how she manages to get him pet insurance because she may have lied about his species.
She has a vegetable garden (her pride and joy, this might as well be her child with how well she takes care of it) and a briki to make coffee with. Kassie always starts her day off with freshly brewed coffee the traditional Greek way, some bread and some fruit, which she always plates too much of because Ikaros likes to steal it.
She's a great cook.
Dozens of books on old weapons are dotted about her home and some (so many. so fucking many holy shit) model replicas because she's a fucking nerd.
You cannot turn a corner inside her home without seeing at least three family photos. Family includes Myrrine, Alexios, Barnabas, Herodotos, Markos, Alkibiades and Phoibe. Nikolaos is in prison for trying to yeet his stepchildren off a cliff.
Phoibe is her goddaughter who calls her "auntie" and Auntie Kass absolutely gives her the world.
━━━( ͡ಠ ͜ʖ ͡ಠ)━━━
Eivor serves lumberjack realness. Flannels, cargo pants, work jeans, yes she has a tool belt, yes she looks a damn treat in it. All she's missing is the hard hat and the protective visor. The axe is in her workshop.
She wears glasses. This isn't up for debate.
Tattoo artist by trade and has a degree in literature. Her love for poetry knows no bounds. She specialises in black and grey realism and her pieces are breathtaking.
Speaking of poetry, her colleagues bully her mercilessly for being a "big old sap". She has fancy paper to write her poems up on, and a wax sealing kit for handwritten letters. She's old fashioned like that.
Technology is a demon she would rather not trifle with. 100% complains about the need for there to be an app for everything, but she does appreciate video calls so she can see her people.
As a hobby, she pursues woodworking and blacksmithing, sometimes selling her creations. She'd make the engagement ring she proposes to you with herself
Dwolfg (or Chewy, or Mouse) Nali and Dandelion Puff are all beloved members of her household. The neighbours' kids named them all; sometimes she babysits Knud and Sylvi, and of course Eira has to tag along.
Her fridge is full of boring meal prep (you better wife her up and cook for her) but her pantry? Brimming with baking supplies. Ma'am loves to bake. Sure, she eats a lot of grrr protein big strong macro gym buzzword meals, but she loves bread and cake. Big muscles but she likes to eat, so she isn't lean, I'm gonna stop before this gets unreasonably gay
━━━( ͡ಠ ͜ʖ ͡ಠ)━━━
Soma, look, this is gonna be specific, but there's foundations for this in game (her metric fuck ton of rugs in the longhouse). She evidently likes fancy things. Her modern!AU occupation: owner and ceo of a sustainable luxury jewellery brand. Recycled metals, gemstones that are sourced/synthesised sustainably, everything is ethically manufactured and her employees are paid well.
She's from humble beginnings, so she does loads for charity and really enjoys quiet domesticated tasks.
Waistcoats and tie when she's attending businessy things, simple t-shirt or jumper and joggers when working from home. Outside, she wears a few rings that she designed.
Not a particularly great cook, but she's a mean pastry chef. She has a massive sweet tooth. Loves to start her mornings with a homemade croissant and a cappuccino.
There is a post-it note above her desk to reminder her to straighten her posture because she tends to sit like a fucking goblin.
Her home is pretty eclectic, which takes people by surprise given her organised manner. Lots of blankets strewn over the couch, lots of knickknacks she collected over the years, some sentimental ones from Lif and some ruder ones from Birna. A few sketchbooks are scattered about with designs for work.
She has a record player and an ungodly collection of country vinyls. It's okay. Nobody's perfect. It's what makes her human.
Also needs to wear glasses, but wears contacts usually because she insists the specs make her look "old", oblivious to the distant sounds of feral lesbian screaming whenever she puts them on.
