While driving around today I had some big Adam and Ethan feelings again.
Ethan realizing that he doesn’t have it all together like he thought he did. That life is messy and complicated and he’s had it good for a really long time and now he has to figure out what to do and how to get by now that it isn’t. Because initial coping mechanisms are not good.
And Adam finally seeing below Ethan’s confident bluster, realizing how vulnerable Ethan is with him at times and that’s the closest Ethan gets to asking for help and admitting things are wrong. I just want Adam to be the support the Ethan needs and wants and for Adam to realize that pushing him away is pretty much the worst thing he could do if cares for Ethan.
Give me Adam saying, “I’m sorry I hurt you. I’m sorry I wasn’t there when I should have been, but I’m here now and I see you for who you are.”

one of my old monster of the week ttrpg characters has decided to get in on this wayhaven chronicles shit and though her creation predates the publication of gideon the ninth by at LEAST five years, i inadvertently made her a butch lesbian palamedes sextus and i truly love that for her
i've been drifting listlessly around my apartment this entire weekend trying to figure out if she'd find nat hotter or ava hotter and i finally had my galaxy brain moment like three minutes ago, before i had my coffee even: i believe it is time for The Love Triangle

The Wayhaven Chronicles—Update 13/Sept/2024
Well, my internet was mostly back this week! :D
I always take even half-working internet as a bonus these days, lol. But having it mostly back did mean I could finally finish up the social media this week!
But apart from that, my full focus was Chapter Four. It’s a more linear chapter—waaay more than the doozy of a variable chapter that was the previous one, lol!—so I really want to get ahead on this one.
Which I have been doing even better than I was pushing for! The big opening scene is already finished! It includes quite a bit of exposition about Li-Sar and what they’ve been up to, and that was fun to start sowing all the seeds of foreshadowing, hehe! ;D
I do sometimes get asked about advice on how to avoid telling instead of showing, so to that I say—don’t worry! For a start, it’s your story, and you can write it how you want, always remember that! All these writing ‘rules’ are guidelines, advice. You don’t have to choose to follow them if it doesn’t suit your style. I’ve read plenty of stories where I’ve been told a character is scared and not shown it through a paragraph of description—it reads just fantastic either way!
I do try and not to do big exposition dumps, but I don’t worry about it when the story genuinely needs it. Just write it in a fun and digestible way, and your reader will be more informed without it being too bogged down in the scene!
Having multiple characters to bounce off each other and react to the information is always a great way to break up the wealth of information, as well as having the MC react to it too with choices in Wayhaven’s case! This is also where having Unit Bravo in for meetings when this kind of things happens is perfect, even better when the LI can have some kind of emotional moment to it all too, hehe! ;D
I’m already part way through the next scene, which is another much more linear one where it’s only two characters, which makes things A LOT smoother to write!
I do love my branching scenes and variation, but it’s nice to have a more straight-forward chapter as a break too, lol!
And speaking of break, I will be away next week, trying to recharge my batteries and rest my brain! But I will be back on the 23rd September and diving straight back into it…especially considering the scene I’m currently working on. Things are getting…electric ;)
Hope you all have the most fantastic week ahead! I’ll update you all again after I get back! <3

If the ROs were IF readers what would be their favorite titles?
Tumblr media
Man, have I played enough IF for this question? Okay, discarding visual novels and going with only text-based IF... Also, some of these are lies.
Merlin: A Kiss From Death - Avoid the fated apocalypse! Also horny.
Adrian: World's Apart - Yes, he's a hipster. Parser-based text adventure from the 1990s! It would've been Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy but he forgot to bring his towel and ragequit.
Arthur: Save the Date - Look, his mind is blown by any of these games, but perhaps try and let him splash around in the shallow end with a relatively easy one that doesn't depend too much on stats. Also, you did your best. Move on.
Percy: One Knight Stand
Merlin: (ভ_ ভ) ރ // ┊ \\ I swear no more desserts for you if you don't stop breaking the fourth wall, Percy! Percy: 👎
4̶0̸4̸ ̶E̴r̸r̶o̷r̷ ̷N̴o̴t̵ ̸F̵o̴u̷n̸d̵: Damn I said no visual novels, so no Doki Doki Literature Club I guess the new Restore, Reflect, Retry
Cassandra: Evertree Saga
Gwen: Wayhaven Chronicles
Vivian: Someone's phone/tablet/computer is getting short-circuited if she tries to play an IF. If you tried to play a paper Choose Your Own Adventure or other gamebook with her... you're gonna get a very creepy experience there! Otherwise, she'd obviously favor one of the all completely unfinished stories about the rusalka or something such floating around like Abysm's Veil.
Lorelei: Infinity Saga
Broderick: What the hell is an 'IF'?

Hey ^^ For Kira, from the emoji asks, 🥀(wilted flower),🐞(ladybug), 🎒(backpack)?
I'm finally catching up on these! Thank you for the ask!
Tumblr media
🥀 (wilted flower) - How does your character deal with stressful situations? Is their fear response fight, flight, freeze or fawn?
I think she tends to go into fight - split with fawn. Depending on the stressful situation, she's typically in a position where she's a figure in charge, so she'll get involved and try to help or figure out what's going on, and resolve the situation. I think the fawn fear response would primarily come into play when she was still in a relationship with Bobby & trying to make it work
🐞 (ladybug) - What does a perfect day look like for your oc? What do they do? Who do they see?
Honestly, I think a perfect day for Kira is a quiet day spent on her own. Something where she just gets to go to the gym or the gymnastics center and train, take a nice long shower at home and do some hair/face masks, putter and clean her apartment, cook a nice meal, and settle in with her sewing and her favorite TV. She's really come to savor her alone time by the time Wayhaven starts
🎒 (backpack) - What items does your oc usually carry? Do they have a bag or just keep everything in their pockets? Do they carry a lot or a little?
I think she generally tries to carry very little - but she'd have caches of supplies in her car, in her office desk, etc - but for the most part sticks to a small-ish bag or purse that can fit her phone, wallet, and maybe a spare tampon

alina wanted to go to medical school and become a doctor! i picture her having been in her 4th year of a premed program when the plagiarism incident with bobby happened. we don't know enough about what really happened with the plagiarism incident, or its repercussions (was the plagiarism ever discovered by the university? if it was, who was punished for it, bobby or alina? was this kind of incident severe enough to go on her academic record in some way? would it have been enough to prevent her from being admitted to graduate schools?), to use it as a basis for any of alina's return to wayhaven, so i tend to base her return more on the dissolution of her relationship with bobby.
at least for alina, i picture her relationship with bobby having been a long-term one. i picture them having been together for multiple years, sharing mutual friends, living together even. i think alina genuinely used to be in love with him (or, at least, with the attention he gave her), but that feeling gradually slipped away over time (i certainly don't picture bobby being the sort of person to invest his time and energy in maintaining his relationships, and i don't see alina as having been the kind of person to expect more from a partner). there's a sort of stability in a long-term relationship - a consistency or a dependability. and bobby possessed a kind of reliable unreliability that alina could anticipate as she became accustomed to the monotony of their daily lives together. they weren't unhappy, but they weren't happy either. and, before the plagiarism incident, alina likely would have stayed with him forever: nothing was bad enough to make her feel like she had to leave, and secretly she was afraid that, if she left bobby, no one else would ever want her.
so when bobby plagiarized her work, it was a massive betrayal. alina broke off their relationship and left and, in one fell swoop, lost her partner, all of her friends, and her home. she went back to wayhaven because she had nowhere else to go and she stayed in her childhood home until she was together enough to find her own apartment. but in the wake of that kind of emotional devastation, you're not thinking about grad school applications or tuition fees. all of her academic goals suddenly became subordinated to the more immediate goals of "find housing" and "remember to stop crying long enough to get out of bed and eat".
it was in this emotionally low state that she ended up deciding to join the police force. for years her plans had been to get out of wayhaven, become a doctor, and build this life together with bobby, and now she had none of these things. she had to start from the bottom and build a new plan for her life. i think it makes sense for someone like alina, who had always loved wayhaven as much as she wanted to get away from it and who had always privately desperately wanted a connection to rook, that, at this point in her life, she would latch on to the idea that she could follow in her father's footsteps and find meaning in a life in wayhaven, doing the kind of work he did. if she wanted to become a doctor to use her scientific interests to help people, then maybe she could help people in a different way as an officer while following her father's path (and, just maybe, she could use the excuse that there was no one else with any medical or scientific expertise in wayhaven to poach verda's position before he came along to fill it). from there, it was a simple case of having remade her life in wayhaven and having started to work to pay her expenses, which pushed that dream of grad school farther and farther away until it stopped feeling feasible. tale as old as time

Playing book 4 and this scene is so cute. Zuri was so relieved that Tina was still excited to see her here🥹
Tumblr media
Its making me think about this post, specifically how the Zuri/Tina dynamic contrasts the Zuri/Bobby dynamic despite being pretty fairly similar.
The lines were (are?) blurred between them too, but they had 'old married couple' vibes instead of 'weird lack of boundaries' vibes. Their relationship is as close as these two can get to A and N's dynamic considering that they're, well, not the same lol (they definitely don't have as many years on them, and I think Tina is more secure than any of them).
They've know each other since high school, with Tina making sure that she wasn't one of the many surface level friends Zuri had (and Zuri is a sucker for anything that makes her feel wanted, so there maybe possibly was a bit of a crush on her side, platonically or otherwise).
She's been there for the deterioration of Zuri and Rebecca's relationship, the bittersweet holidays and birthdays, the descent from people pleaser to performer (which Tina didn't question too much because 'hey, shes ultimately doing nice things for people right?'). Both of them witnessed the ups and downs of being flighty teenagers in a small town.
Then they went to university and everything went to shit, with Bobby playing a significant enough role in it for there to more obvious hostility between them (they were a trio of friends at some point). They ended up having a pretty big falling out after getting their honours degree, with them rekindling their friendship after they've both moved back to Wayhaven - which Tina did after her honours and Zuri did after dropping out of her masters.
So they've for sure seen each other at their best and their worst - and Tina knows Zuri's best could be a little better. Their relationship has definitely grown though, with Zuri being more vulnerable with her than she's been in ages from the moment they got back on track. Zuri doesn't have to dance around her. Being known by her isn't the anxiety inducing tightrope walk that it is with Bobby.
But she knows how much she hurt Tina and still carries that guilt with her, so she isn't as secure in their relationship as she could be. She's terrified of losing her.
So when she gets sucked into the supernatural world, it feels like there's a barrier between them again and it makes dealing with everything she finds out in book 1/2 feel heavier than it already was. Tina could feel it too, and it started stressing her out... until she figured out what it was. Then they were both able to breathe easier, despite being worried about how it would impact each other. Tina doesn't have all the details, but she knows enough to watch out for her a little (and enough to give her LI a good talking to about her concerns lol). Their relationship starts feeling like their adjusting to a new normal instead of growing apart.
But then Zuri becomes an Agent, and a new person enters the picture. And she's starting to feel like she's being replaced. Just a little. By someone Tina seems invested in in every way - in ways she couldn't be with her. Someone she can't bring herself to attempt to trust. Suddenly, that distance from before feels like nothing compared to the chasm between them now (this is Zuri’s perspective though, so it isn't the most reliable lol).
Seeing Tina light up like that helped assuage some of those fears though.

home;
pairing: Nathaniel Sewell x the Detective synopsis: (Somewhere in Book 3,) After a night of sleep for all of Unit Bravo (humor me), Nate insists on seeing the Detective off when they leave the Warehouse for the police station. The Detective muses about home.
“Mmm,” you hum against Nate’s lips, resolve forcing you to lift your hands from his waist to his chest so that you can pull away. Your words are framed with soft laughter as you force yourself to say them. “Okay, I really have to go now.”
The rays of the summer morning sun peek through the canopy of trees surrounding the clearing around the warehouse, making Nate’s skin look as if he’s glowing. You hear Morgan’s voice somewhere in your head, arguing with no malice that Maybe you’re just that in love with him. You can hear a smirk in her voice to boot. And maybe you are just that in love with him. Your heart, let alone your mind, can’t help the smile that tugs at the corners of your mouth as you gaze at the tall vampire, suddenly thankful once again that real vampires aren’t like the vampires of myth. You get to enjoy how he looks in the glow of the morning; see the soft breeze play with his brown hair like you had done earlier in the morning. You refrain from following suit now, though, because then you really wouldn’t be able to leave.
At your words, he opens his eyes slowly. Something akin to sadness swims and swirls inside the warmth of them, but he smiles gently nonetheless. For a moment, you wonder protectively with a heavy heart about what, besides you leaving, makes him sad. “Do you?” He asks, no real force behind the question. “You’re welcome to stay home for one more day, you know.”
Home. Your heart flutters when he calls the warehouse that.
You let out a soft breath of laughter, and it draws Nate close once more, nestling the tip of his nose in your cheek as his smile grows. Your chest tightens with sadness at his words— how you wished you could stay. But your town needed you. You were meant to keep them safe, and all you did was be the cause of their loved ones going missing. You wished you could stay. You wished everything was fine in Wayhaven so that you couldstay.
The thoughts have your smile fading just a bit, your gaze dropping to the ground. But the way Nate pulls you even closer to him has you forgetting them until all you’re thinking of is him.
And how you don’t want to leave him.
“Nate,” you laugh again in protest. Despite the facade you were trying to keep up, your arms find their way around his neck in a loose embrace. “I’m going to be late now…”
This time when he pulls away, he laughs. Heaves a little, albeit still dramatic, sigh.
And surely it’s meant to tug at your heart (it does).
You smile.
He smiles too.
“Okay,” he says with another sigh, running a hand over his hair, then letting it rest at the back of his neck.
“Okay?” You confirm, eyebrows raised. Feeling the chill the breeze brings along with it now that he’s no longer holding you.
As if thinking, he purses his lips for a moment then nods and smiles reassuringly. “Yes,” he says with a laugh. “Now go.”
You reflect his smile. “All right…” You take a step back. “I’ll be home again before you even notice I’m gone.”
A couple weeks ago, home was your apartment. Home was Wayhaven. Nate calls the warehouse your home. But maybe…
Maybe home wasn’t really any of those places, or maybe it was. Maybe home was him. Nathaniel Sewell.
Nate’s eyes widen when you call the warehouse ‘home,’ but soon enough, the surprise is melting into a soft, gentle gaze. He highly doubts you could be home again before he notices you’re gone— he already misses you.
And he’s tempted to tell you just as much, but instead he just squints teasingly at you as he watches you walk back towards your car. The teasing look softens when you finally stop walking backwards and turn around. He pushes his hands into the pockets of his green pajama pants to keep from reaching out for you again.
His soft words float on the morning breeze, dancing as they make their way over to you and beckon you to turn around once more just as you reach your car.
Your eyes meet his, noticing their haziness; hazy again but not with sleep… “See you soon, ya rouhi.”
… with love.
He’s got this warmth washing over you even though he’s standing yards away— something only he can make possible. It washes over you and makes you feel as if you’re melting in the best way possible. Like sinking into a warm bath after a long day or burrowing yourself under a blanket for a nap. You bite down on your lower lip, trying to keep the smile on your lips from growing any wider. Searching and failing to find it in you to speak, you nod.
You reach for the car door handle halfheartedly, giving him a little wave with your other hand. He mimics it before his hand disappears into his pocket again.
Because if he hadn’t done so, then he really would be walking over to you. He really would reach out to you and take your hand, pulling you gently out of the car so he could hold you once more. You’ve got his heart in your hands, after all. Even as you buckle yourself into your little car and start the engine. How was he to stop himself from following after it?
He catches your eye through the windshield. Faintly hears your heart thud in your chest the moment your gazes connect. A smile spreads across his face at the sound, and he lets out a breath of laughter as it does.
I love you, Nate mouths to you over the sound of your car’s engine.
——————————
“That’s gotta be the longest goodbye,” Farah says with a grin, watching from the window of the common room as the Detective’s car rolls away. She watches Nate finally turn around and make his way back inside.
“You creep,” Morgan comments, plopping herself down on a chair and sighing. “Why are you watching them?”
It’s not really a question.
“That took like ten minutes! It’s like he’s sending them off to war or something.” Farah snickers at her own joke, surely waking the commanding agent if he’s not already up and about by now (he is).
Morgan lifts her foot and rests it on Nate’s coffee table, a smirk making its way to her face. “Watch it be fifteen tomorrow.”
“Is that a bet? I think it’s a—“
“You have a gambling addiction,” comes the voice of Adam as he steps into the room.
“Come on, Adam,” Farah laughs, leaning back against the wall and crossing her arms with a bright smile. “What’ll it be? I’m betting twenty minutes. Morgan’s got fifteen.”
Morgan’s gaze shifts to Adam, an eyebrow raised. The blond crosses his arms as well as he looks at Farah.
A moment of silence.
The vampires hear Nate’s footsteps as he make his way to them.
Then, Adam smirks.
“Thirty.”
“What’s going on?”
“Nothing!”
“Is your foot on my table?”
“Yeah right…”
