Character Design
This section has been the only area that has changed on the art side of this project since we pitched our idea to Chris. Originally we intended for a female protagonist as we wanted to provide some better female represenation within this theme/area of games. Here was the original Pitch for the character:
Ultimately us deciding to choose this does lead to some issues. The first being that none of us are female which means our own understanding of female mental health is far far far more scarce. Secondly a good point was also brought up that the character should appeal to everyone in this area, rather than just complying to one gender. So from this we have decided to create a gender neutral character that we aim for it to connect with all genders rather than an individual.
NOW! this does pose its own challenges. Firstly, I have had to think about how I can approach a design that does not conform to stereotypical male or female bodily attributes. So my thinking behind this is to make use of baggy clothes to hide bodily shapes the the character. I will still be making the character in the same style as to ensure it keeps with this stylized theme we intend for. SECONDLY, I needed to consider the fact we will not be wanting to see this characters face as that can give off impressions to the player (We will only see the character in reflections, e.g. mirrors, or when the camera switches to third person for the boat sequences). So the two options I had thought of was first, give them a mask or secondly, give them some sort of baggy hood. To me the second options makes more sense as I have already mentioned about how I want the character to have baggy clothing.
Following on from this, I had to also think about the setting which is a stormy wet environment in which the character will be needing to wear some sort of water proof clothings. I then googled what the most popular methods of clothing for this were in the uk and here is what I got:
Rain Ponchos
Waterproof Parkas
Rain Coats/Jackets
From this, it immediately gave me some ideas of characters who wear similar styles of clothing. Firstly, I thought of Six from Little Nightmares. I really liked how their face was concealed within darkness so it left it up to interpreation for players over the gender of Six some time. I think this key part of Six' design allowed for it to kind of meet that same idea I was mentioning earlier, being inclusive for everyone.
Then the other character that I was reminded of was Coraline. I have always been a huge fan of the movie since I was little (even if it petrified me) so her character in her yellow rain coat came to mind immediately. I really liked the bottom half of the characters design with the big yellow wellington boot matching with the jacket and the dark jeans to contrast with it.
I think if you combined Six' jacket with coralines jeans and boots it would make for quite a cool combination for a character. I then also had the worry of making it too similar to those characters so I decided to look into some gender neutral colours. From my findings I seemed to find lots of pastel colours with the most common ones being greens and yellows:
So from this I think that it may be best for me to stick with yellow design but potentially add in twists to the desings like stripes, polka dots etc.
From all of this I got Ai to generate me some conept ideas for this character. I described them as "A character wearing an oversized yellow rain jacket with black trousers and yellow wellington boots with black stripes. Their face is hidden in darkness." Here were some of my favourite ones that came out of it:
The main things I would probably change from these concpets is making the stripes on the boots more prominant similar to the image below and then also changing the jean colour to a more greenish colour like the ones seen below. A side note I also want to mention is that the character will be wearing gloves as to keep them as anonymous to the player as possible.

Be prepared for the unknown!
So, this is the go bag I keep in my vehicle. It travels everywhere with me “just in case”. There is enough in here to comfortably live off the grid for 3 days, but this could easily be extended with a fresh water supply (river, lake etc) and by hunting/foraging for food.
The ‘water to go’ bottle is great as it filters and purifies water, you can either drink straight from the bottle, or decant it into another container. The metal mug allows you to boil water if the filter clogs or fails. This is also backed up with purification tablets giving the kit redundancy.
There are also a few fire lighting tools in the kit, lighter, and flint and steel.
The weather is a major factor where I live so there are plenty of items to keep me warm and dry. Spare clothing is added so there is something warm and dry to change into whilst drying your wet kit.
The whole kit weighs in under 20lb, so its light enough to travel quickly and the bag type allows for discreet movement (grey man…).
Shelter is camouflaged so that you can remain undetected if you so wish.
The Gurkha Kukri is a fantastic survival tool, great for chopping wood and creating shelters/traps. Used this kind of tool heavily in the jungle and swear by them! Unfortunately UK knife law means this does not get to travel with me, so its safe at home in an accessible place in case i ever need to bug out.
This is all supplemented by my normal daily pocket EDC, and car emergency breakdown/rescue kit.

Camping in the rain doesn’t have to be a miserable experience. If you plan on going camping in the UK, there is always a good chance that it’s going to rain. In this article, we’ll share our 10 tips on camping in wet weather to help you make the most out of your camping trip regardless of the weather conditions.
What to bring:
Tarpaulin
A tarpaulin is ideally the single most essential item to bring when planning a camping trip, as it can be a total life saver. Think in multiples! You want to have at least one large sheet of tarpaulin that you can place over the tent, so that in case of a downpour, you pitch it with ease; and an additional one to place underneath the floor of the tent for the extra waterproof protection.
The tarp also has a variety of other useful purposes, such as creating a sheltered space for firewood, bikes, and camping chairs. You may also use a tarp to set aside a rain-free area close to your tent for other camping activities, which can be super handy as it gives you the freedom of enjoying everything you had planned for in spite of the rain.
Groundsheets
Groundsheets serve as your ultimate line of protection between you and the soggy ground. For this reason, be sure to have one with you, ready. Aside from serving as an extra level of defense against the soggy ground, the groundsheet will effectively insulate the tent floor, providing you with a much warmer night’s sleep.
Ensure that the groundsheet underneath the tent matches the size of the tent’s floor. Keep in mind that if you use a larger groundsheet, it will retain rainwater, leading to undesirable funnel effect. Have the ends of the groundsheet folded away underneath the tent floor to secure them properly.
Another key benefit of having a groundsheet is that it can be pitched perfectly on a smooth foundation, and the floor of the tent will in turn be more comfortable to sleep on.
Gazebo
Although a gazebo is not on every camper’s list for possessions to bring along, it can be quite essential when roughing it out in the wet wilderness. As large waterproof structures, they offer ample space to roam around, relax, and set up a table camping style, while you smugly listen to the sound of the pattering rain nearby, thereby avoiding getting soaked in it. Modern gazebos are also very easy to install.
Blankets
When it comes to camping, especially when the weather forecast doesn’t look so good, a few extra blankets wouldn’t go amiss. Extended rainfall can lower the air temperature substantially and raise the humidity levels. As such, you’ll want to wrap yourself up in a toasty, dry sheath come night time. With a few blankets, you will get the cozy camper feeling, which makes listening to the rain an enjoyable experience.
Waterproof Footwear and Clothing
From the first instance, the waterproof clothing you wear should be both lightweight and breathable, with fully loaded wrist cuffs, taped seams, and adjustable hoods to keep the rain out. Your kit should cover the basics such as waterproof trousers, waterproof jacket, and waterproof boots, and if the temperatures are too low, have a fleece and a base layer.
Keep the waterproof ratings of each of your kit’s pieces in mind, since they’ll come into play if you do find yourself in the shower. Anything that goes beyond 5,000 mvp of breathability and 5,000 mm of water-proofness should keep you well ventilated and securely watertight.
Avoid putting on cotton clothing as these soak up moisture rather than wicking it. It’s also recommended that you bring extra waterproof clothing, which should be safely stored in plastic bags, just in you accidentally get wet and need a change of clothing or gear. So, before you set out on your trip, you should reproof any old waterproof trousers, jackets, or boots to power up the coatings using wash-in or spray-on water-proofers.
Emergency Rain Ponchos
You need to have rain ponchos for you and the rest of your cohorts in case you need to get out of the rain. Wear them when you’re setting camp too, to keep you dry, keep your waterproof gear intact and prevent getting drenched.
Plastic Bags
These are some of the cheapest, most compact, and most versatile tool out there, so make the most out of them. You can ideally get them from any shop selling anything under the sun, for a price that’s next to nothing. They also pack away brilliantly, and take up negligible amount of space. You can essentially use the essential items to stay absolutely dry including extra clothing, gear, books, bedding, etc.
Dry Bags
These are the pricier and more sophisticated alternative to the regular plastic bags. As waterproof sacs, you can use them to store anything from laptops to wallets in order to keep them safely from moisture. The key advantage with dry bags is that you can reuse them endlessly, and they are a bit kinder on the environment compared to the normal plastic bags. They also generally feature straps, clips, and draw cords to secure your items perfectly.
Newspaper
Newspapers can be used as a drying medium for stuff that might get wet despite your best efforts. You can use newspaper to stuff any damp socks or shoes to speed up the drying process and have them dry much faster.
Lighting
Lighting is a must-have feature on any camping trip, and particularly so if you pitch your tent under an overcast. The gloomy skies will leave little light to show your way. You can use a hand-held torch to explore the outdoor environment, a headtorch to shine some light as you pitch your tent, or even lanterns to light the camping space up for eating, reading, etc.
Cords and Ropes
These are a necessary multi-purpose tool when you’re out in the wild, especially in rainy weather. You’ll find them quite useful if you’d like to hang a few sheets of tarp to build separate rainproof shelters, or if one of your tent’s guy rope accidentally snaps from the pressure of the bad weather. As a rule of thumb, always bring a few extra ropes and cords for contingencies.
Additional Tent Pegs
Before leaving, ensure that you have extra tent pegs with you. They’re largely inexpensive, and can be your guiding savior in case you lose one of the regular ones in the swampy ground. You can also use them to fasten the tent more strongly so that your tent can withstand the strong winds.
Entertainment
If it’s raining heavily, you’ll naturally be less inclined to go for long voyages outside during your trip. So, it’s better to have alternative forms of entertainment to keep you occupied and satisfied. Bring some magazines, books, chargers, music players, a deck of cards, board games, and anything else your comrades will appreciate and enjoy throughout the trip.
Reproofer
It’s a great idea to throw in some reproofer in your camping backpack. You need to reproof your gear and tent before you head out camping, but it never hurts to have it handy in case of an emergency. If you find that your waterproof trousers or jacket is leaking in water, a quick recoat can save it from disuse.

Sunday 26th June – Ellis Day Two
Today was the second day of 8.00 – 17.00 Ellis Lifeguard Training at Mickeys Retreat. As I mentioned in the previous weekly blog, I am going to be writing a dedicated post regarding Ellis Lifeguard Training as there is quite a lot to cover and not a great deal of info online.
Once we got back to Patterson Court we had dinner and then met at the pool to practice for our test the next day!
Monday 27th June – Ellis Day Three (Test Out Day)
Today was our Ellis test out day and another 8:00 – 17:00. However, you might get to leave early if they get through everyone quickly! I was really apprehensive about the test out day and was worried I was going to forget everything. In hindsight, you really don’t need to be – Ellis prep you so well in such a sort space of time. Safe to say I passed and was officially a Disney Lifeguard!! As I’ve already mentioned, I am going to be writing a more detailed post on the whole Ellis Lifeguard Training process.
Tuesday 28th June – Day off (Outlets, Publix, Welcome Party)
After three long and tiring days of Ellis Lifeguard Training, I was glad to have a day off. Becky, Eleanor and I went to the outlets for a little mooch around. We also needed to get some appropriate footwear (i.e. ugly crocs). I also needed some black sunglasses and a black waterproof watch for work. (FYI – you can buy a black waterproof watch for $14 at the outlets!) We also went to Publix for the first time and spent way too long chosing what American foods we wanted! I then realised how expensive fresh fruit and vegetables are – poptarts are cheaper than a bag of grapes! My weekly shop was around £20 in the UK – over $50 in Publix really? You can walk to Publix from Patterson Court in about 10-15 minutes, but there is also a transtar bus if your shopping is too heavy.
That afternoon Becky and I also headed over to costuming to collect out lifeguard gear. They were really short on the sizes I needed so I ended up grabbing whatever I could. You can take up to five of each item (i.e. five swimming costumes, five pairs of shorts etc). If you find a size that fits, then keep it!
Once we got back to Patterson Court we decided to have a lil fashion show trying on all our stuff with our ‘fanny packs’. Lifeguard, ready!
That evening, Becky, Suzie, Eleanor, Emily and I went to the Disney Housing Welcome Party at Chatham Square. There was lots of music, character meet and greets, a photo booth and free Pizza – they even had gluten-free slices for me!
Wednesday 29th June – Welcome to Operations a.k.a The Worst Day Ever
Today, we headed back to Disney University for our Welcome to Operations class. The day was from 7:30 – 16.00, so it was a very early start for us all. Let me tell you now, this is one of the most boring days off your entire life. The class is a mixture of CP’s and non CP’s. They teach you a bit more about the company and then some incredibly basic things like how to tell the time using the 24 hour clock (I thought everyone knew this). We also learnt about Disney’s Safe D Begins With Me policy. The ‘Safety In Motion’ portion is probably one of the most patronising and boring portions of this class. Good luck, and try not to fall asleep (honestly, it happened to people).
After we stopped for lunch, we had more recreation specific induction. It involved a presentation and some questions from Disney trainers. We then had to complete some readings online followed by multiple choice questions. It’s all rather straight forward and largely common sense. They also set you up on the hub and get you linked to the cast member wi-fi across Walt Disney World – this is much better than the guest wifi, so use it!
Once Welcome to Operations was finally over, we headed to costuming to collect our free lifeguard shoes. Lifeguards get the choice of receiving a free pair of either white trainers (sneakers) or crocs. I would highly recommend choosing the white trainers over the crocs. The crocs that Disney provide have no holes in and are terrible for getting lots of water trapped in them. I also knew of people who burnt their feet through the crocs because they got so hot! It’s best to collect the free shoes and buy you’re own crocs/tevas – the Croc store at the premium outlets always have some kind of offer available. Generally speaking, resort guards tend to wear trainers, whereas water park guards (who tend to be in the water a lot more) will wear crocs or tevas.
Thursday 30th June: Typhoon Orientation
I met Chris (another UK CEP at Typhoon Lagoon) at Chatham Bus Stop and we headed over to Typhoon Lagoon for our ‘Forecast Typhoon’ class. You are required to wear clothes similar to Traditions attire. My advice is to make sure you have something that is both smart, in Disney look and comfortable in crazy florida heat.
The class ran from 8:00 – 12:00 but because of the bus timetable, we ended up arriving really early. (Transtar is the devil). It was quite strange entering the backstage area of Typhoon Lagoon as I hadn’t even visited the park in the day! We went into one of the training rooms and had a presentation on the story behind Typhoon Lagoon.
The legend goes:
“A furious storm once roared cross the sea Catching ships in its path, helpless to flee Instead of a certain and watery doom The wind swept them here to Typhoon Lagoon.”
All of the theming in Typhoon is based on this ferocious storm; that’s why Miss Tilly is impailed on the mountain (the highest centre point in the park). The stories goes that the mountain still tries to dislodge the boat with an enormous geyser of water every half and hour!
The orientation involved some quizzes such as looking at a map of the park and answering where was the nearest QSFB location, the nearest first aid, the nearest restrooms etc. After a quick break it was time to head out ‘on stage’ and to see the park for the first time.
Typhoon Lagoon is beautiful. I couldn’t think of a more well themed water park and (although I am bias) I definitely prefer it over the theming at Blizzard Beach. Walking around Typhoon Lagoon did feel like a bit of a maze. I thought ‘how am I ever going to remember my way round or be able to get from the backstage area to one of my furthest stands in time!’ It also made me realise how busy the parks and the aquatic areas were going to be. I was excited, but also quite nervous.
After work, I headed to Magic Kingdom to meet the girls. Suzie’s roommate, who works in Fantasyland, had given her loads of fast passes for Magic Kindgom rides so we were able to beat the queues!
I went on Buzz Lightyear for the first time on my programme and lost miserably – I’m used to the Disneyland Paris Version, ok?
We also watched the Main Street Electrical Parade and despite the annoying music, I love it! It’s a love hate thing for sure.
We also watched Wishes from across the lake in Frontierland. I’d definitely recommend trying to see Wishes from different locations in Magic Kingdom!
Sadly, Eleanor and Suzie left early as they had work the following morning. However, I had the next day off and Becky had a PM shift so we decided to stay to watch the Kiss Goodnight. Of course this meant that we had to take some photos in front of the castle and I got my first Mickey Rice Krispie Treat of my programme. (The first of many, may I add).
Friday: Day off!
I had a day off, but everyone else seemed to be either at work or at training. I decided to head back to Typhoon Lagoon for opening and experience the park as a guest. I felt that if I was going to be working there for the summer, I may as well get acquainted with all of the attractions myself. I would really recommend going to either of the water parks for opening as you get on the attractions very quickly – I had managed to do just about everything by lunchtime!
I headed back to housing and decided to go lay by the pool in Patterson Court for some more sunbathing and swimming – I could get used to this life!
I decided to meet Eleanor after she had finished work. She was lifeguarding at Wilderness Lodge which is a Magic Kingdom area resort. I caught the bus over to the Contemporary and met her in Magic Kingdom. We didn’t get into the park until pretty late in the day. There was also a massive rainstorm and we got absolutely drenched walking from the Contemporary to the Magic Kingdom main entrance. As soon as we arrived, we ended up spending $8 on the most touristy Disney ponchos.
The good thing about the storm was that Magic Kingdom had emptied out considerably. The bad thing about the storm was that a lot of the rides were closed. At one point, the lightening was right on top of us and struck right next to the castle. Everyone (including us) let out a little scream!
We decided to ride The Little Mermaid ride, It’s A Small World and Enchanted Tales with Belle. Enchanted Tales with Belle is one of my favourite attractions for a couple of reasons. Firstly, Beauty and the Beast is my favourite Disney film and Belle is my favourite Disney character. Secondly, Belle’s house is so well themed – I loved all the little details inside. Thirdly, I absolutely adore seeing the kids reactions to Belle when she comes to welcome us in her library. The parents reactions to their children reactions made Eleanor and I get all teary. There was one little girl dressed just like Belle and she was in complete awe of Belle when she entered the room; the little girls mum was beaming with happiness! That is what Disney is all about. I love seeing magical moments like this because it reminds me of my own family and all of our amazing memories in Disney.
Overall, our rain filled evening was one of my favourite evenings in the parks!
Saturday 2nd July – My first day of OTJ Training
Today I had training at Typhoon from 8:00 – 16.30. It was also my first day in costume – exciting! I was up at 6.30am ready to catch the 7am bus to the Typhoon Lagoon cast entrance. I didn’t officially start until 8am and the bus only takes 15 minutes from Chatham Square to Typhoon. However, the buses aren’t that reliable so it is best to get to work early. You are also given a 15 minute grace period to clock in and they encourage you to clock in at the earliest convince. However, don’t clock in before your 15 minute grade period as you’ll end up with a Disney point. Three points and boom, reprimand. Three reprimands and boom, please leave the country within 48 hours.
I am going to compile all of my On the Job Training in one post as there is quite a lot to cover and I never found a great deal of information on the process before I started.
That’s it for another week working for the mouse. Stay tuned for the weeks that follow!
What did I get up to last week?

I have a pretty long commute. I don’t do it every day, but 2-3 times a week. It involves cycling, the train, the metro and walking. This means exposure to weather and a lot of sitting around. Add this to a penchant for dressing up in fancy frocks and there is a certain type of weather conditions that is problematic. That’s right, rain is a problem. The punches thrown by a mild drizzle I can roll with, it’s the medium to full biblical torrential that causes discomfort. The sort that makes you soggy overall, and keeps you moist most of the day. In fact, dry out time likely coincides with when it’s time to head outside for a fresh application. This means I need a rainwear solution.
Enough about the problem… What is the solution?
Now I could waffle on for a while about this and that solution that almost works, or offers a partial remedy for certain areas. Such as wearing a waxed jacket or a rainproof hat. At the end of the day though there’s only one real solution: Full rainproof gear. The sort that covers you from the top of your head to your ankles, with a hood that can be tightened around your face, elasticated around wrists and ankles. The sort made of seam-welded synthetic fabrics in lurid colours, mostly waterproof and moisture containing and, well, definitely favouring function over any other factor. I have a set, which I detest and rarely use. And mine are just plain grey and blue, so no luridness to stoke the fires of my ire.
The Blackshore Coastal Clothing indigo poncho, hand made in Southwold.
Let’s look at a better rainwear solution!
No, let’s cut to the chase, save valuable time and words and skip directly to the rainwear solution I’ve divined forth: The Indigo rip-stop dry-wax poncho from Blacshore Coastal Clothing. A rainproof poncho made from lightweight waxed cotton. Sufficient of size to cover most, unisex of construction to suit all. Foldable and packable in a pouch that slips nicely into my backpack. Handmade by a real person in Southwold on the East coast of Great Britain, it’s like an exercise in ticking boxes for someone of my persuasion.
A handy bag to keep the poncho in when it’s not being worn.
The Halley Stevenson dry wax rip-stop waxed cotton is a next generatoon waxed cotton for rainwear.
A nice tag showing that my poncho was hand made by Cathy. A nice, personal touch!
The parts that go into the poncho are worth looking closer at. The lightweight waxed cotton, supplied by Halley-Stevenson in Dundee, is made from rip-stop cotton fabric, so it is handily resistant to tearing. It is also a good example of the evolution that is happening in traditional waxed cotton, as this is a “dry-wax” version, which has all the desirable waterproof qualities of waxed cotton but it can, in addition, be hand washed in warm water without losing its properties. This is something of a game-changer for waxed cotton, as traditionally washing a waxed cotton jacket means a total reapplication of the wax. The dry wax finish can also be replenished, but using a less messy wax stick to apply the wax.
The buttons are also worth a mention, sourced from Courtney & Co, the last and only factory in the UK making traditional corozo buttons. I really appreciate when small. independent companies support each other in this way, helping each other to succeed.
Hood up, cinched tight to keep the inclement weather out.
Conclusion?
This isn’t a hugely complex garment to construct, but the work that has gone into making it is well executed. The seams are straight, the buttons properly attached and the buttonholes solid. What must be an absolute beast to work with though is the sheer surface area of the poncho. There must be at last two regular jackets worth of waxed cotton involved.
Blackshore has kept things nice and simple for sizing and colour choices. You can select either a long or a short size, in either indigo or orange. Available now from Blackshore Coastal Clothing, price 210 pounds.
Addendum:
The only snag in my grand plan is that due to various complications like travelling abroad, a following period of illness, too much pleasant weather and now being confined to my home, I’ve not had a chance to fully field test my new rainwear. I’ve worn it and it certainly fits, the fabric does just what it says on the tin and I’ve unfolded and refolded it, so I’ve no doubt it does just what it promises. I want to fly through the rain though, cackling crazily, while droplets form on the waxed cotton and become streams trailing off behind me instead of soaking up my jeans. This is all down to me though, Blackshore Coastal Clothing has delivered their side of the deal in grand style.
The Blackshore Poncho. If you're looking for a solution to keeping your fine garms (and backpack) dry in the rain, take a look at the poncho from Blackshore. Hand made in Britain from Scottish waxed cotton. #rainwear #raincoat #waterproof #waxedcotton I have a pretty long commute. I don't do it every day, but 2-3 times a week.

Mobility scooters are now a common sight in the towns and cities of the UK and, thanks to development and efficient manufacturing processes, they are surprisingly affordable items that give a new lease of life to people with limited mobility. Anyone with back problems, for example, or those who cannot walk too far for any reason whatsoever can benefit greatly from a mobility scooter. They take you from one place to another quickly and easily, and allow you to carry your shopping or other items, usually in a handy attached basket.
Yet, there is one factor that affects users of mobility scooters that we can do little about – the weather! If you have an urgent journey to make you need to do it whatever the conditions – rain, wind or whatever the elements throw at us – and thankfully, among the many accessories you can buy for your mobility scooter you will find a range of ponchos, that are designed to keep you dry and protected as best possible. Of course, they can only do the job to a certain extent, but the best ones do it very well.
You need a poncho that can do the job as best possible, so what do you look for when buying one? We took a look at some of the features found on these very useful items, and also have some reviews below of the best ones on the market.
Some Of The Best Ponchos
We took the time to find a few of the best ponchos and capes available today so that you can make a more informed choice when it comes to the best one for you. Below you will find our selections, with a brief review and information on each one:
Homecraft Universal Scooter Cape
This is a very typical model in the all-over cover scooter cape genre. It fits across the scooter and is easy to put in place, although depending on the ability of the user may need more than one person to fit it correctly. This one covers the front of the machine including the controls – be aware that many of the ones we have reviewed do not – and as such is a very popular model as it makes riding in the rain as comfortable as it possibly can be. It is made from very durable nylon that is fully waterproof, and is light and compact when not in use. At under £25 it is also sensibly priced.
Pros: full enclosure, durable material, clear panels
Cons: none, but there are cheaper
NRS Scooter Cape
This is another of the models that offers all-enclosed protection – and we should say we do think it worth paying a little more for one of these than the standard cape designs as they really do offer greater value – and is one that is very neat indeed. It has the required clear panels at the front so you can see what you are doing and where you are going, it covers the handlebar controls, and it also covers most of the sides of the machine for when you are on the move. It is very light and made from polyester with a PVC coating for added protection, it can fit most types of scooters, and it has a zip fit for ease of getting in and out when it is fitted. It’s a little over £25, but we think that is decent value for a quality item.
Pros: fully enclosed, clear panels, covers the controls, zip fit
Cons: none if you want a quality cover
PD Care Scooter Poncho/Cape
This one comes from the well-known PD Care brand, which has a wide variety of goods and accessories for mobility scooters, and while it is very neat and tidy, we are not sure of its overall capability. This is one of the type that does not cover the machine itself, so the handles will be wet in the rain, but is designed to encompass the rider. It’s great, therefore, for in the wind, but not so good when it is raining anything more than very lightly. It does have sleeves, and is easy to put on, and we like the fully waterproof and very durable material, but at not much less than £30 we are inclined to recommend you check out others for better value.
Pros: brand, sleeves, very durable, waterproof
Cons: only covers the rider, quite expensive in comparison to others
Aidept Deluxe Scooter Poncho
This is one of the more basic scooter ponchos that we have found, and yet we reckon it is worth a look, especially at a price of less than £15. This one is not a cover-all but one that fits around the body, and is perhaps best for those who ride the sort of scooter that is as basic as gets – a frame with wheels. The makers claim it can be used universally – which is fair enough as it is a body cape – and it comes with a zip entry for ease of use. It’s made from very durable waterproof material and is light to carry around, and also comes with a handy drawstring hood so you have more protection for the face when riding in the rain. The main problem with this type of poncho is that your hands and controls are exposed to the elements, but for occasional or emergency use – and at the price – it’s still worth a look.
Pros: cheap, simple to use, drawstring hood, zip closure
Cons: not a fully enclosed design, hands exposed
Homecraft Lined Scooter Poncho
This is another from the Homecraft range, and we like it because while it is essentially the same design as the one we have already reviewed, it comes with a snug lining so it is nice and warm. This one covers the front of the machine including the controls – be aware that many of the ones we have reviewed do not – and as such is a very popular model as it makes riding in the rain as comfortable as it possibly can be. It is made from very durable nylon that is fully waterproof, and is light and compact when not in use. At around £30 it is not the cheapest, but if what you are looking for is protection and warmth from the cold, wind and rain, we recommend you take a closer look at this very well-made and neat poncho.
Pros – fully fitted, quality material, lining for warmth
Cons – none, but there are cheaper if you don’t need the lining
Kozee Komforts Waterproof Scooter Cape
Our final selection is arguably the very best of the bunch; it’s one of the all-enclosed models that fits most scooters, and covers the rider and machine almost completely. This one comes with clear panels for good vision, and unlike many, also covers the back-pack on the scooter so you are safe if yours is not waterproof. It’s made from very durable and fully waterproof material that will last a long time, is easy to fit – although may take more than one person – and light and compact when not in use, and has a handy zip fitting for ease of access. This one is designed to be universal, but is also specially made to fit the new and very popular type of mini-scooters that are becoming more commonplace. At almost £40 it is by far the most expensive of this bunch, but in terms of practicality and protection, it is also the most impressive of the lot, so worth a look.
Pros: very impressive in practical terms, full enclosure, light and compact, covers everything
Cons: none, but it is pricey compared to some others.
That’s our selection of the best mobility scooter ponchos available today, and we have taken care to include versions of each of the two main types – those which cover the entire machine, and those which keep the rider protected. Let’s have a quick summary of what these are about, and see if we can come up with a recommendation for you.
Which is for You?
Is there a scooter cape or poncho among the choices above that would suit you? We are quite sure there will be one that suits your requirements, but which one it is will be down to your personal preferences. First, it comes down to whether you want one that you wear – a cape-style one that does not cover the machine – or if you need one that protects the entire machine and its rider. This is a factor worthy of consideration, and is determined by how often you may be using your cover.
If you often go out in rain or winds – or even in the cold – we strongly recommend you check out the final two on the list as they offer the best in terms of protection. Each gives you and your scooter complete cover, and while they may be a little more expensive than some others, the benefits of this cannot be overlooked.
We recommend you check through our reviews again before choosing, and we are sure that you will be able to find the right one for making sure you get the best in comfort when riding your scooter in poor conditions.
What You Need
When you buy a poncho for your mobility scooter there are several things you need to look for, and the following areas are those you should be considering when reading our reviews and drawing up a shortlist:
Waterproof
It goes without saying that your poncho needs to be waterproof, as the main use for such an item will be as protection against the rain. Rain is a pest when you need to get from one place to another on your scooter, but with a well-made and fully waterproof poncho you can expect the very best protection possible. The best models are made with durable ad extremely protective waterproof nylon or other materials, and are designed to be all-enclosing as best they can so you get the right level of protection. Have a look at our selected models for the best choice.
Ease of Use
One factor you need to consider with mobility scooter ponchos is how easy to use they are, as the more practical and simple they are, the easier they will make your life. You want one that is simple to attach and fit in place, plus easy to carry around when not in use – preferably on your scooter in a simple to reach place – as well as being light in weight and compact. You also want it to do the job quickly, so you don’t get too wet when caught in a shower!
All-Round Protection
You need to make sure the poncho you buy offers you genuine all-round protection, and while most do, it’s worth checking out our reviews as there are many that don’t do the job too well. Given the number of different models of mobility scooter on the market, most of the ponchos available tend to be a standard design, so you may find that they fit some machines better than others.
Safety
One of the necessary features of a mobility scooter is that of safety, especially when it comes to being able to see who else is around you. Your scooter will most likely be used on pavements where pedestrians are present, so you need to be able to see them at all times – even when you are fitted with a poncho. Check our reviews for details of the safety features, and look for those that have clear panels so you can still see clearly when you are on the move.
Price
Of course the price has an influence upon whether or not you will buy a particular poncho, and with many different models to choose from you are sure to find one that suits your requirements and is within your price bracket.
Let’s have a look at a few of the very best models of mobility scooter poncho and capes that we found, so you can make a better choice.

Laugh in the Face of Rubbish Weather in a Funky November Rain Waterproof Poncho
What is it?
Oriental Bird print waterproof rain poncho from November Rain £49.00 on Amazon.co.uk buy it here
I’ve had mine a few weeks now and have been out and about camping, glamping and walking in England, Wales and Scotland. Given the unpredictable weather the UK is prone to, keeping my November Rain poncho in the back of the car or inside my backpack has proved to be super useful. In fact, because it looks so good, I’ve whipped it out at every chance I’ve had!
Should you get one?
Yes! The quality is excellent, they are effective at keeping you dry and don’t cling to you like some cheap ponchos do, and they don’t make you look like a massive frump either as they are so pretty. Ideal for wet camping set up and take down, festivals, dog walking and pretty much anything else that requires you to be outside in the rain.
Rain? Who cares if it rains when it gives you an excuse to don one of these funky waterproof rain ponchos! The Oriential Bird print November Rain poncho is available on Amazon for £49.00, and we think it’s a must have for festival goers and anyone who spends time outdoors.
