* Timeframes for meeting their FS

First things first, im shit with timeframes when reading tarot so this won't be straight forward answers, rather i think i'll be getting the energy of the time period they'll be in when they meet them but unless i specifically pick on something time-wise and say it - then i have no idea when they'll be meeting them.

Ok this is just a wild guess but i think it might be after skz disband or he in some way loses Skz. He'll be crying over this loss but my guy doesn't know that with closing this door another one opens. Again this is a guess, it could relate to other things too - the energy im seeing is that he loses something of value and grieves over it, but doesn't see what blessing is hiding just behind the corner. Ok, this is really interesting but im seeing him being extremely lucky and having already met his Soulmate (mind you not FS) years ago when he was younger and had no clue at all, and them life brought them apart. Ok this is a very unclear/difficult energy to read and im not picking on much other than that he's determined to find love and for him im actually seeing 1. a timeframe and 2. reaching financial success? Personal: Housing Threat Update

For those following the HOA saga, I talked them into letting me pay in three installments. We reached funding goals for the "Special Assessment" towards the end of November and I sent them the second installment. Paying them so close to the end of the month apparently messes eveything up. Did they take the monthly housing payment or not? My bank account says they did, but the e recient sounds like they didn't and the "portal" is useless for finding out as it pretends the special assessments aren't happening.

I am waiting for third installment money to transfere and hoping I don't have to come up with another $550 because they insist on the shitty non-standard hard to use portal instead of any other system and are not willing to just tell me how much I actually owe them.

Bonus: Over last weekend they sent an emergancy message saying they could not take the Special assessment installment unless I fixed something on the portal, even though my bank said they had the money. They sent no link or directions to finding the semi-mythical page as unlike a website with a drop down menu, there is no site map or any way to find pages not on the set of tabs they offer. It was not in the tab that seemed most likely, which I checked five or six times including a click through to the next page between trying all the other tabs etc.. The help and site search tab required a seperate log in which required figuring out which password I was usong. It took most of an hour to work out the page I needed was three pages in from the tag I started out with. You had do figure out the maze of text hyperlinks to get there because no drop down menus.

Chapter 15: No Drive, No Entry

If there was one word that can describe Waterfall at all hours of the day, it's dark. And at night, it was even darker.

Papyrus was surprised there were even artificial lights here. They're very hard to spot beneath the waters and the vines, the tall grass, the echo flowers...

The echo flowers were also creepier at night. This place just screamed "creepy". But being the brave skeleton that he is, Papyrus persevered through the shadows. He had to do this. Alone.

Sans is always going to be a big supporter in his life, Papyrus knew that. He was his one consistent supporter, after all. But lately, it felt like he had been leaning on him a bit too much, especially where finances were involved.

Papyrus wasn't blind. He noticed his behaviour recently. How many jobs did he have to work to keep them both stable? How many times did he come back past midnight only to collapse on the couch? He didn't even have the energy to tell him a bedtime story.

Sans had been doing all that, and while their conversation earlier was reassuring, it still didn't dissuade the guilt from Papyrus' mind.

Guilt. It's a weird feeling. And a very unpleasant one at that.

So that's why he's alone tonight, doing this all by himself. He didn't want to lean on Sans any more. He already had enough to deal with. This was his burden to bear. His goals, his hopes and dreams... Sans doesn't have to be there to support him. Not this time.

He had to do this ALONE.

Was he already lost? The monster kid told him that her house is near the dump, but... He couldn't even tell where the dump even is.

His boot sunk into heavy water.

His arm brushed against the side of a trash pile.

Good. He was close.

Just another chapter in Papyrus' tale of glory. Papyrus, the newest member of the Royal Guard. Papyrus, the GREATEST member of the Royal Guard. The Great Papyrus, the newest, toughest, coolest member of the Royal Guard!

Exiting the dump, Papyrus quickly found a quiet, pleasant street that, for a dark place like Waterfall, was surprisingly well-lit at night. Well, lit enough to see where he was going at least. And definitely lit enough to find the house he was looking for.

There it was... Undyne's house.

Papyrus felt so small standing before it. Why? It's not like it was a castle or anything. It's just a strange architecture of a house. Very stylistic, he'll give it that. Ten out of ten Temmies.

He wondered how many sushi rolls that giant fish would make it it were real.

"COME ON, PAPYRUS. NO NEED TO BE INTIMIDATED." The skeleton took a deep breath and steeled himself to build up his confidence, as he should! "REMEMBER, YOU ARE BRAVE, STRONG, AND MOST OF ALL, PERSEVERANT! YOU WILL BE- NO. YOU WILL BE THE GREATEST ROYAL GUARD MEMBER THE UNDERGROUND HAS EVER KNOWN! AND THEN ALL YOUR PROBLEMS WILL BE SOLVED. NOW KNOCK, PAPYRUS. KNOCK."

Puffing out his chest, Papyrus took confident strides towards the front door, took a deep breath, and...

BANG BANG BANG!!!

A very quiet, gentle knock. Perfect.

After about a minute of waiting, the door opened up, almost like a mouth. Okay, this design was VERY stylistic. Bone-us points for the opening fish mouth.

Speaking of fish, Papyrus was face-to-face with a very tired fish lady. Her hair was a disheveled mess, her black sleeping vest top was hanging off once of her shoulders, and she was covered in scars. The most prominent scar, however, was one just over her left eye. Well, right eye from Papyrus' perspective. It was almost creepy to look at, actually. It looked like the eye itself had been sliced in half. The pupil was haphazardly sliced, there were what looked to be stitches in her eyeball, and dust had somehow also accumulated inside of it.

Wow.

She looked AWESOME.

Okay, Papyrus. You've got one shot at this. Be your just-as-awesome self and ASK.

"Why are you h-"

"HELLO!!! MAY I PLEASE BE A ROYAL GUARD!?"

...

SLAM!

What was that? She couldn't have rejected him, surely. Papyrus did everything right, didn't he? Surely it wasn't him! Wait... It wasn't him... Not at all! This... This was...

"OH, I GET IT!! YOU'RE TESTING MY PERSEVERANCE!!! WELL, LUCKILY FOR ME, I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, AM ONE OF THE MOST PATIENT MONSTERS IN THE ENTIRE UNDERGROUND!!! THERE IS NOTHING I CANNOT OUTWAIT!!! YOU'LL SEE, I'LL BE A ROYAL GUARD YET!!! I'LL JUST WAIT HERE UNTIL YOU COME BACK OUT AGAIN!!! NYEH HEH HEH!!!"

With that, Papyrus remained there, hands folded over each other and a big smile on his place, not unlike a dog waiting for their master come home. Surely, she will be out in just a few minutes! Then he can be a Royal Guard and get popular, AND support Sans at the same time! It's the perfect plan!

A few minutes turned into an hour. Papyrus wondered what she was doing in there. Perhaps she's setting up something for him. That would make sense, right? Yeah! Who wouldn't set up something cool and awesome to test The Great Papyrus at the stroke of midnight? It was too good not to do!

One hour turned into two hours. Papyrus wasn't going to be deterred by anything. Not even a rustling in the bush. Although the squeaky "hOI!" admittedly gave him a bit of a fright. But it's okay! Papyrus was brave! It surely just had to be one of Undyne's tests! Surely! She'll come out soon enough!

Two hours turned to three. What did Sans call 3am again? Was it the Witching Hour or the Devil's Hour? Papyrus always got the two mixed up. Speaking of Sans, surely he must be asleep in his room by now, right? Either that, or he's just not sleeping again. He hated to say it, but Sans definitely did not do well for himself in terms of sleep. Thinking of Sans' exhaustion only fueled Papyrus' desire to join the Royal Guard even more. He had to do this, for both of them.

Three to four. Papyrus kept thinking back to what Sans said. He told him that when Papyrus got a job, Sans would always try to work alongside him, or at least near him. Hmm... Come to think of it, how stable are Sans' jobs, really? The hotdog stand was obviously illegal, but his other little jobs... They weren't always available to him. Isn't that why he kept taking more and more of them? Maybe he needed a more stable job too. Well, then! It was pretty much a no-brainer what Papyrus had to do! Papyrus' future, Sans' career... It will all change tonight! Or, well, in the morning, at least.

Four to five. Wow, she was really testing him, huh? Papyrus' bones were starting to ache from just how long he'd been standing. He didn't even know bones could ache like that!

Five to six. Six to seven. The door mouth opened once more. There she was, stretching and ready for the day. She was wearing an eye patch, and her hair was tied back into a tight ponytail. So cool.

She opened her singular eye and stared at Papyrus in surprise. Well... This was peculiar.

"HELLO!"

"...Hi?" The warrior waved sheepishly, before narrowing her eye suspiciously at him. "Were you really standing here all night?"

"I SURE WAS!!!" The skeleton responded cheerfully. "DID I PASS THE TEST?"

"What t-" She cut herself short as it fully sunk in what was actually going on. This guy wants to be a Royal Guard, and he was so perseverant and stubborn that he was willing to stand out here all night just to get in. The realisation made her scoff a bit with a smile. "Huh. Hey, uh, what's your name?"

"PAPYRUS!"

"Alright, Papyrus." Her grin almost resembled a sneer as she summoned her signature weapon - a glowing cyan spear. She stepped out of her house, pacing around the skeleton as she twirled her spear around, careful not to hit him, but not so careful that she came across as the opposite of intimidating. "Tell me a bit more about yourself."

"WHY, OF COURSE!!! MY NAME IS PAPYRUS, I AM A SKELETON, I AM 19 YEARS OLD, MY FAVORITE COLOR IS VERMILLION, IT'S THIS RED-ORANGE COMBINATION, THE COLOR OF MY SCARF, ACTUALLY!!! I WAS BORN ON AUGUST 26TH, I HAVE A TWIN BROTHER- AAAHHH!!!"

Papyrus' speech was quickly cut off by the simple action of Undyne lifting him over her head with one arm. Wow! She knew she was strong, and skeletons were light, but it was still amazing! Her grip on his spine was incredibly tight, though. He could almost feel her fingernails dig into him, but he didn't care!

"I MEANT tell me more about your attributes!"

"ATTRIBUTES?"

"Well, I already know you're patient!" With a slight grunt, Undyne tossed Papyrus up and caught him before putting him down. "And your perseverance is impressive! But what about your strength?! Your toughness?! Your drive and ambition!!! Do you have that?!"

Now, THAT was a no-brainer!

"OF COURSE I DO!!!"

With a laugh, the captain crouched into a battle stance, pointing her spear directly towards him. "Prove it."

Papyrus only had a millisecond to prepare for what happened next.

Ding!

His soul froze in place.

"WHAT?" As Undyne leaped into the air, Papyrus looked down to observe what happened. His soul! It's green!

"NGAAHHHHHH!!!!!!"

Ooh, cool boss music- Uh oh!

Time appeared to slow down as Papyrus spotted a cyan spear hurdling towards him. Thinking fast, he summoned a bone that shot up from the ground, which effectively deflected it.

And that was just the beginning.

Undyne leaped over Papyrus to hurl even more spears from several directions, which Papyrus quickly blocked with more bones.

This was it! This was his moment to prove his worth as a Royal Guard!

"IS THAT ALL YOU GOT?"

"Not even close, punk! Whoa!" Undyne quickly ducked under Papyrus' sudden bone attack. That sneaky trickster! "Fuhuhuhu... Oh ho, alright! Show me what YOU got!"

"GLADLY!!! NYEH!!!"

Just as Undyne leapt into the air for another barrage of spears, she suddenly felt her soul, and her body, drop to the ground.

"YOU'RE BLUE NOW!!! THAT'S MY ATTACK!!! NYEH HEH HEH HEH HEH!!!"

Undyne only had a few moments to take in just how crafty this new guy is. However, just as pride was about to take over her face, a line of bone attacks sped towards her.

Gravity may be heavy now, but her legs were still strong enough to leap over them!

"Hup! Fuhuhu!"

"NYEH HEH HEH!!!"

The blue did little to hinder Undyne as she hurled more spears from several directions. The green-soulled skeleton had to summon his bones quite quickly if he wanted to avoid getting hit!

Ding ding ding ding!

Guess she would have to pick up the pace! And apparently, his own bone attacks had already thought of it!

But no matter how fast the bone attacks were, Undyne was even faster! Using her spear as a pole, she vaulted herself over the rows upon rows of bones, which practically turned her training ground into a field of landmines. The only difference was, the landmines were clearly visible, but downright impossible to avoid on solid ground.

As the two fighters locked eyes, they shared mutual feelings of admiration and pride. Time slowed down once more as they exchanged looks mid-attack. Was there nothing they can't do?

Ding ding ding- "OOF!"

669/680.

Drat! Papyrus was distracted!

"Fuhuhuhuhu!" Undyne laughed as she landed on the ground with a roll into a heroic stance. She looked like she came straight out of a superhero action movie, at least in Papyrus' glistening eye sockets. "What a rush! You really know how to-"

...

1492/1500.

What the? Something was wedged in her heel?! How?!

Undyne looked down, only to find a tiny bone that had penetrated her boots and stabbed her heel. It didn't hurt that much, but god, was it powerful! Was this guy really that strong? If he could penetrate leather boots with just a single attack AND take off 8 HP from doing so, then there was no doubt in Undyne's mind that he would make an incredible Royal Guard. He's definitely got the stuff, that's for sure!

Meanwhile, Papyrus' gleaming grin quickly turned into an expression of shock. He covered his mouth with a guilty expression. Did he just... STAB the person he was trying to impress?! Why is she looking down like that? Please be proud, please be proud, please be proud...

"...Fuhuhu... huhuhu... FUHUHUHUHUHUHUHU! Oh my Delta Rune, I didn't see THAT one coming, you tricky little punk!"

Seeing Undyne laugh filled Papyrus with relief. And with relief came laughter too.

"NYEH HEH HEH... NYEH HEH HEH HEH HEH!!!"

"IS THAT HOW YOU LAUGH?!"

"YES!!!"

Somehow, that just made the two laugh louder. Surely now, Undyne would finally let Papyrus into the Royal Guard! Surely, surely, surely!

"Okay, Papyrus, right?"

"UM... YES?" Wowie! Now she's talking business! She was surely about to give him a handshake and start talking about his knighting ceremony and talk about his new armour and Royal Guard emblem...

"Your attacks are super powerful and well-coordinated, and I can tell you can take a hit too, even without armor!"

"THANK YOU! I HAVE SPENT MY FORMATIVE YEARS PERFECTING MY ATTACKS SO I CAN GIVE 1000% IN ALL MY BATTLES!! NYEH HEH HEH!!" Papyrus tried his best to look cool and confident, but at the same time, humble, by putting his hand on his chest and his other hand on his hip. His scarf flew in the wind. In the... nonexistent wind. Somehow.

Undyne snickered under her breath. "Well, it's definitely paid off! There's just a couple of questions I have to ask you to make sure you're REALLY Royal Guard material!"

Papyrus dropped the pose. "SORRY?"

"Come on! Did you really think being as tough as you are is enough to qualify as a Royal Guard member? It's not just about how strong you are physically!" Maintaining her huge smile, Undyne proceeded to accentuate her words with pretty hard pokes to Papyrus' sternum. However, no one could say that Undyne's words were "stern-um" at all, at least, not in tone. "The Royal Guard needs strong hearts! Hearts of monsters who want nothing more than to seek freedom, truth and justice in the hearts of many! Who want to make everyone's hopes and dreams come true!!!"

The inverted mermaid warrior summoned yet another spear and stuck it into the ground. She used it as a pole to lean on while she polished her other spear with nothing more than her own spit and vest top. Gross in Papyrus' opinion, but awesome at the same time.

"So tell me! What do you want more than anything in the world?"

"POPULARITY!!!"

...Well, she didn't expect that. Undyne's face contorted in confusion. "Sorry, what?"

Papyrus' face also contorted to mirror her confused look. He gave the perfect answer, didn't he? Maybe it was so unique and special, that even she was caught off guard by it or something. The Great Papyrus has many talents after all, one of them surprising people.

"LET ME REITERATE! I WANT POPULARITY AND FRIENDSHIP!"

"...That's all?"

What was that supposed to mean? Oh, wait. Oh wait! Quick, save face!

"W-WELL, OF COURSE I WANT TO BRING FREEDOM TO ALL MONSTERS!!! OF COURSE!!! BUT... I WANT TO DO THAT WHILST ACQUIRING MANY STRONG FRIENDSHIPS!!! Y-YOU CAN'T PROTECT AN ENTIRE KINGDOM EFFECTIVELY IF YOU'RE NOT BONDED TO THEM, RIGHT??? AND FRIENDSHIP IS THE BEST WAY TO BOND!!! IT'S A WIN-WIN!!!"

Huh... Well, he made a good point, Undyne thought. But is friendship all he wanted out of this? He couldn't find a way to make friends that didn't involve being a part of what is essentially the underground's military? Well, they did say there was no stronger bond than comrades in arms. Though considering who Undyne has to work with, she's still debating if that's even true or not. Either way, as the Captain of the Royal Guard, she can't let this guy in until she sets him straight. This was getting very concerning. Biting her lip, Undyne stood up straight for her next question.

"Friendship isn't the only reason to be joining the Royal Guard, Papyrus. Like, what about honor or... or justice?! Like, what are you gonna do if you meet a human?!"

"WELL..." The skeleton paused to think. What WOULD he do if he met a human? He always agreed with Sans that humans are pretty cool. So what would he do? "I WOULD... FIGHT THEM!"

Undyne's stance shot up as she sported a perky grin. "Yeah, and?"

"AND... I WOULD SHOW THEM MY BEST ATTACKS!!!"

"Yeah, and?!"

"AND I WOULD FLEX MY MUSCLES ON THEM!!!"

"Hell yeah!!! Flex on them HARD!!!"

"AND LET'S NOT FORGET PUTTING THEM THROUGH PUZZLES!!!"

"Okay, not a fan of puzzles, but I'm digging it!"

"AND..."

"Yes????"

"I WOULD ASK THEM IF THEY WERE IMPRESSED BY MY PUZZLES AND BATTLE PROWESS, AND THEN WHEN THEY INEVITABLY SAY YES, I WOULD TAKE THEM OVER TO MY HOUSE TO HANG OUT, AND WE WOULD EXCHANGE PHONE NUMBERS AND-"

"Wait wait wait wait wait, wait. Wait."

Papyrus allowed Undyne to leave, hopeful. Did that do it? Did that convince her? Surely, it did! He gave perfectly reasonable answers to her questions! He's got this in the bag! Papyrus will be a Royal Guard in no time!

Except...

Oh god oh god oh god oh god oh god. He's gonna get torn to pieces out there... Surely he must know how dangerous humans can be?! I certainly do! Doesn't he know?! How old is this guy?! He told me his age, why can't I remember it?! Oh god he's not- I can't just let him in like this! Think, Undyne! Think!

Once she regained her ground, Undyne returned to an innocent-looking skeleton waiting like a dog outside of a marketplace.

It's really a shame that she couldn't let him into the Royal Guard on good conscience. He'd get broiled alive with an attitude like that.

"Hey!"

The excited skeleton looked at her, his expression filled with hope. For once, the captain's sweat isn't just from exercise.

"So..." She fidgeted with her spear as her eye darted around, her grin far too wide for it to be genuine. "You want to be a Royal Guard. And I can make you one!"

Papyrus gasped, his feet stomping enthusiastically. Is she really getting his hopes up like this only to never let him join? But then again, it would be terrible of her to crush his dreams. Undyne's goal is to MAKE dreams come true, including Papyrus'. Even though those dreams are very misguided. Oh, Asgore, what was she getting into?

Well, she can't turn back now.

"But, err, you're going to have to go through some SERIOUS training before we can let you in!"

His excitement didn't die down. "LIKE WHAT?!"

Oh crap, she didn't think this far. "Like... Uhh..."

Her eye darted around more than ever, desperate to find something else for him to do with his life. Maybe if she pushed towards him into another direction, he would- Her eye landed on her kitchen through the windows.

"COOKING!" She blurted without thinking.

...

"Well, all good warriors need to learn how to cook, right? RIGHT???"

In her "I-don't-want-to-crush-his-innocence-and-dreams" mindset, Undyne barely noticed Papyrus' amazed, almost wistful expression.

Cooking... Papyrus didn't know what cooking had to do with Royal Guard training, but perhaps he could learn. After all, while he is very knowledgeable about certain aspects, Papyrus had to admit to himself that he didn't exactly do his Royal Guard research beforehand. But if Undyne said it was important, then who was he to doubt her?

"YEAH! ALL GOOD WARRIORS NEED TO KNOW HOW TO COOK, OF COURSE! IT'S COMMON SENSE! NYEH HEH HEH!"

Oh, the relief that washed over Undyne's body in that moment. She looked about ready to deflate. What a morning. And she hasn't even started her patrol yet! This guy... Oh, she was going to love cooking with him. She could feel it in her pounding heart. The thought rejuvenated her.

"That's the spirit!!!" And just like that, her energy was back. "Come on, knucklehead! We still have a couple of things to talk about before your first cooking lesson! Fuhuhuhu!"

That was the last thing she said before she walked back in her house.

And in that house, they would discuss everything.

Papyrus didn't know a lot of stuff, but he knew this: Today marked a new chapter in his life. A brand new goal.

He was going to be the best Royal Guard ever.

So, to me, I think there are two main criteria that define a season: Love Interests and Gameplay.

Love Interests can be further broken down into:

Variety: How different/unique are they to previous seasons? Are they all models and carpenters and finance bros?

Fandom Impact: This one is silly and subjective. Are people still talking about them years later? Do they have fanfics and art? If you don't know this person, are you missing out?

Gameplay can be further broken down into:

Quality of Plot Drama: How it's written, how impactful it is. Is it stupid manufactured shit, or is it important and moves the game along? (Cherrygate? Great drama. Suresh wanting to 'give Lulu a chance' after he'd been all in for us? Shitty, awful drama).

Challenges: Are they engaging and interesting? Do they move the plot along?

Replayability: Are there enough unique aspects in the routes that you feel the need to replay?

So, based on these two criteria, I assigned rankings to each season, with Season 2 being the best that fusebox can possibly do. (We already know that it is).

These are completely subjective, but this is what I came up with.

Some brief explanations:

Season 1:

Not the best art style, but overall the proportions were spot on, the body shapes and types were different and unique. Personalities top tier (Tim? Jake? sigh.) Cherrygate, dunking challenge etc.

Season 2:

The best the fandom can do in terms of consistent art style, poses, challenges and replayability. Every route is unique. Characters are overhwhelmingly gorgeous. Some may not like the drama, but I think it's just enough.

Season 3:

I thought things were ranked too high but then remember Tai? Rafi? AJ? The waterfall date, the water balloon and tent challenges that meant something and caused drama?

Season 4:

Lost points for the NaJamUno character merge, but gained points for Youcef and Oliver. Great characters, poor challenges and drama points. Dylangate was dumb and so was making us sleep on the daybeds.

Season 5:

The less said the better. But the sprites were hot af.

Season 6:

The great character merge was atrocious. But the drama from Casa, the Marshall&Ozzy plotline, and HAMISH oh my god, he gets a bonus point for drama all on his own.

Season 7:

Personally very forgettable season. Some of the sprites were lovely. Evan was a highlight and he's gorgeous. But given how quickly everyone forgot about this season, it's loowww.

Season 8:

Gets a high ranking for fandom impact purely based on the immense amount of art and interest that's come about this season. Even with up to a half-point deduction to account for recency bias, this season ranks highly.

This gives us an updated ranking of:

This gives us an average season rating of 6.4. We could remove the outliers, but we're trying to plot how good each season is against the average, so let's not. If we then plotted this and threw in a bar to show the average:

It says the only seasons that are 'above average' are Seasons 1, 2, and 8. Which, honestly, given my adoration for Bruno, Ciaran, and Lewie, rude. How dare I hurt myself with my own chart!!!!!

I'm sure one of the maths people could do something statistically significant and make this fully mathematically valid, but this is just me latching on to a silly ask and being an idiot about it.

I like S8 a lot. It's worth playing.

Each day has passed, and the fights have become even more aggressive. You kept your word when you said ‘eternity’. Every time he tries to talk to you, violence is the only response that is given to him. Sometimes, you would attack him or disappear as far away as possible from him.

When you were in your training area, you decided to go to the waterfall to do some ‘Takigyo’. To fix your mental health and clear your mind for the time being. You didn’t notice a certain pigtail coming to your area, taking each step closer and closer to you. Since the waterfall keeps your mind in peace, you never notice Ranma’s presence here. He was just staring at you for a few minutes in his girl form (because of the waterfall causing him to transform).

Once you open your eyes and see your enemy, you want to attack him but slip in the water. Ranma reacted fast and got you out, placing you on shore to keep you safe. “Hey. Hey! You ok?” Ranma’s pitched voice contains concern. You cough out some of the water that is in your throat. “Oh, good you’re still alive.” she sighs in relief. 

“Ranma…” you softly called out. You didn’t want to see him, not what happened on that ‘day’. “Why, you here?” 

“Listen, I know we went off in the wrong but I…”Ranma nervously trails his words to find the right ones to say to you. “I never wanted to fool you, not like this! I guess, I just want to be with you…” her face turned a bit red when she told her that.

“Ranma knew, I no like liars. You play [Y/N]’s feelings and trust.” you pout, not noticing Ranma’s face almost going to break. “But…” Ranma looks back at you when you pause a bit. “You still [Y/N]’s friend. I like being Ranma’s friend again-” She cuts you off by hugging you close. She held on a big smile at you and felt the warmth behind that smile.

“Ranma!!!” [Y/N] shouted dragging your weapon down on him and he jumped back to dodge your attack.

“Hold right there! I thought we made up! Why you are still fighting with me?” he questioned, with a confused look. Even the others were confused. They specify remember [Y/N] being carried by Ranma the other day. He carried [Y/N] in bride style with you holding his neck with a comfortable aura around them, that made certain girls jealous. But looking at the two of them fighting made them change their perspective about Ranma’s frenemies.

“[Y/N] have a new goal!” you announce excitedly. “[Y/N] no kill Ranma but defeat him!” pointing towards him with passion in your eyes to set that goal in motion, then swinging your weapon towards him. 

He gave you a weird look like you’re crazy, then softly smiled. “Ok, I’ll fight you but…” he walked towards you calmly getting closer then turning to your ears to whisper, “Let’s make a wager. If you win I’ll buy [f/f] for you but if I win you got to hang out with me that involves no fights between us.” he offered.

You turned to look at him, “Ranma makes it sound like you ask [Y/N] on a date, right?” You whisper back with an unsure tone. He quickly denied it before things could get out of hand with the finances looking at him, nevertheless, you agree to his deal.

Say hello to hadaltale y’all!!

To explain the name: the hadal zone is areas of the ocean in deep trenches that lie between 6,000 to 11,000 meters.

The hadal monsters as you can expect, are all completely aquatic! After the barrier spell by the mages who tried to trap monsters during the Great War went wrong, the whole planet was flooded. The hadal monsters have only stone tablets as records of this, and they’re very vague. They believe at one point that their people may have been surface dwellers, but those days have long passed

Over time the monsters who survived on ships slowly evolved to better handle an ocean life, becoming stronger swimmers, being able to breathe water, and eventually abandoning ships all together to live in the ocean forever. Hadal monsters became master stone masons, carving into the rock of the ocean floor to make their homes, and taking advantage of deep trenches and cavern systems. To handle the harsh water pressure, these monsters became larger and stronger overtime at the expense of their magical output. Hadal monsters have incredible physical strength and durability, but lower magical output than the majority of surface monsters.

After the crash, the hadal monsters were first discovered by the sea AUs, then the sea monsters bridged the gap between the hadal and surface AUs. Hadal monsters cannot breathe air. But the royals were determined to unite all monsters and the hadal royals agreed easily with this goal. It took five years after the crash, but finally a spell was found that would allow a hadal monster to safely breathe and travel on land for up to three hours at a time. Work is still being done to increase this.

In turn, the second biggest city of ebott, jokingly named Atlantis by Asgore who has no imagination, lies slightly west of seashore. Atlantis is mostly underwater of course. But parts of it are on the surface and the surf on float in buildings. The city is built into the rocky cliffs of ebott, and the hadal monsters have drilled further into the ground for their own living spaces. There’s even a tunnel to waterfall that they created

And now, to introduce the siblings!

Pearl (hadaltale sans)

Technically she was never named “sans”. Pearl was always named Pearl. She’s small for a hadal monster, only six feet long, and her lower half resembles that of an octopus. She’s a skeletal hadal monster aged 50 with a blue magic. She has the third eye characteristic of the royal family. She’s considered absolutely gorgeous by hadal standards because of her smooth tentacles and soft looking face and body.

Pearl is a gentle and affectionate soul. Pearl was raised as royalty and has a strong sense of duty from her upbringing. She has lovely manners. She’s a bit skittish at times though, and has a lot of anxiety over trying new things. She tends to cling to those she deems safe. She has very little experience with the surface

As one of the princes lined up to potentially take their place, pearls duties lie in management. She organizes events for Atlantis, manages finances, and spends a lot of time in the records hall. She has a reputation among the hadal princes for hosting the best meetings due to her budgeting skills

Hadal monsters didn’t summon weapons normally until it became part of ebotts curriculum. Pearl missed this part of her education and never learned to make one, nor does she care to

Pearls special ability is cloaking! She can change the color of her bones and tail to match the colors of whatever behind her. Unfortunately her eyes do not change with the rest of her

Things she loves: seashell accessories! Head wrappings, any sort of hat really, she has a collection. Fine jewelry, swing music, black and white movies, fancy chocolates, chicken nuggets, watching races and jousts, stargazing, floral and coral arrangements, interior design, the color coral pink, lily pad flowers

Silex (hadaltale papyrus)

Technically not a papyrus, as his name was always silex. Silex is a hadal monster aged 44 and 7’3 feet long. His lower half resembles a spiny eel with lovely sea green ecto to match his eyes. He has the third eye characteristic of the royal family.

Silex is a confident monster. He’s quite outgoing and friendly, making him a natural leader in any friend group. He has an eye for the shy weak ones in the group and tends to focus on them. He has a strong sense of duty being raised in the royal family. He can be overconfident at times though, believing he can achieve unrealistic goals, and his family often has to being him back down to earth.

As one of the princes lined up to potentially take his parents place, silex’s duties lie mostly in management. He has a good eye for people and is often in charge of hiring and managing the employees of Atlantis’ court as well as managing their work. He is also often taken to business deals.

Despite being aged out by the time magic weapons were made a requirement for graduates, silex still learned to make one. His weapon is a long rapier. It’s a sleek and simple weapon. He wants to add more to it someday though

Silex’s special ability is electricity! When grabbed, he can produce electric currents around his body injuring and scaring off would be foes! Thankfully the electricity doesn’t seem to travel far, shocking every one else around him. He has very good control of his magic

Things he loves: the color silver, interesting metal weapons, racing and jousts, surfing, exploring the surface, sushi, HARD LIQUOR, watching spars on TV, jasmines, not wearing clothes, electro swing

Side characters

Titanic: hadal Asgore, titanic is the father of Pearl and silex and the main royal of the hadal. Titanic was the driving force between uniting his monsters and the surface and encourages his people all the time to reach out and explore. He’s a very curious and passionate monster with a love for all things new

Olympia: hadal toriel, the mother of Pearl and silex and the monster who fathered them. Olympia is the second royal of the hadal monsters and is an affectionate but proud character. She agrees with titanics desire to combine their people with the surface dwellers but is more cautious than him. She will integrate as long as she’s convinced her people benefit from each deal.

Voyager: hadal gaster, the second father of Pearl and silex, voyager is the mate of titanic and Olympia, and first in line to replace one as a royal if anything had ever happens. Voyager was the parent to carry Pearl and silex of course, and has a very close relationship with the two as well as his other kids. Voyager is a reserved but highly intelligent monster, and was the one who discovered a way to safely bring power to the areas of Atlantis beneath the surface. He always jokingly laments that none of his kids enjoy science the way he does

And the siblings in order from oldest to youngest

Angler (goat): aged 140, angler is the oldest prince and the first child of the royal trio. She was carried by voyager and fathered by Olympia. Angler is a strong aggressive but loyal monster with a tail resembling that of an angler fish.

Pacific (skeleton): aged 122, pacific is the second child of the trio, carried by Olympia and fathered by voyager. Pacific is an elegant monster with a taste for drama. He’s clever and known for catching people in lies. His tail resembles that of an orca

Bermuda (goat) aged 80, Bermuda is the third child of the trio, carried by titanic and fathered by Olympia. Bermuda is… eccentric. He’s a wild card who can’t be predicted, but he loves his family so no one worries too hard. He works closely with the navy. His lower half resembles a blue finned shark

Blog 3: Role of privilege in nature interpretation

Privilege can be defined as something that provides advantages without being noticed by the person that has them. When I first started reading this unit, I realized that I have never thought about how privilege could play a role in nature interpretation. Privilege affects everyone and is often invisible, meaning that we can all be guilty of overlooking it. It provides groups of people with advantages that others may not have. While studying this unit, I found the backpack metaphor helpful in relating privilege to this course. Another metaphor compared privilege to a bubble; just like bubbles in a champagne glass, privilege is nearly invisible, rises to the top, and cannot be entirely avoided (Reagle J). Viewing privilege in this way helped me understand how it influences who feels welcome and included in natural spaces.

Economic privilege is a widely discussed form of privilege that we encounter daily. I often think about how different wealth statuses provide certain advantages or disadvantages, and unfortunately these inequalities extend to nature interpretation. Park entrance fees, transportation costs, and the expense of outdoor gear are all barriers that can prevent someone from enjoying nature. While nature is typically viewed as free and accessible to everyone, these costs create a barrier preventing it from being equally available to everyone. For instance, I think back to camping trips with my family when I was a child. The three-hour drive to the campsite, the cost of gear and food, and the park fees all added up. Looking back, I realize how fortunate I was to have those experiences, knowing that many people cannot afford such opportunities. In my hometown of Dundas Ontario, there are many waterfalls I used to visit as a kid. They always free to explore, with no cost for parking or entrance. In recent years, however, entrance fees and parking charges have been introduced, creating a barrier for individuals. This has been upsetting to witness because it excludes those who may not have the financial means to enjoy these spaces.

Another over-looked privilege in nature interpretation is language. As someone who speaks English, the most widely used language in the world, I rarely face barriers when engaging in natural spaces. Signs, guided tours, and educational materials are predominantly offered in English, which can exclude individuals who speak other languages. This is something I have never reflected on before because it’s a barrier I’ve never encountered. For example, on hikes, trail signs might describe the local flora and fauna and interpretive materials in parks often share the history of the area. Language barriers can not only diminish the experience but also pose safety risks, such as when signs warn about dangerous animals or poisonous plants. For non-English speakers, these gaps in communication can prevent them from fully connecting with and enjoying the natural world.

One way to address this issue is to offer pre-recorded audio guides or written descriptions in multiple languages. These resources would make nature interpretation more inclusive and encourage everyone (regardless of their native language) to explore and learn about nature’s wonders. Personally, I’ve travelled to many parts of the world and visited natural sites where I was able to fully participate because resources were offered in English. This privilege is something I’ve often taken for granted.

Reflecting on privilege in nature interpretation has been eye opening. It’s easy to overlook the ways in which systems and structures cater to those who already hold certain advantages. By acknowledging these privileges and striving to address issues related to safety, finances, and language, we can create more inclusive environments for nature interpretation. Doing so will give more people the opportunity to connect with the natural world and share in its beauty.

Elizabeth Johnson and her husband hit the vacation circuit hard over the past couple of years.

They went boating in Florida, hiking in the Swiss Alps, snorkeling in Hawaii, waterfall exploring in Oregon, and leaf peeping in Canada. They saw moose and orcas in Alaska, manatees in the Dominican Republic, and sheep in the Irish countryside.

"We also volunteer at a local food bank each month, go to comedy shows at Mall of America, routinely go to concerts," she said.

Neither Johnson nor her husband grew up wealthy, and the couple never expected to have such an indulgent lifestyle. Johnson's husband, in particular, faced "a very bleak outlook" for his career when he graduated from college in 2008 at the height of the Great Recession.

But now, 16 years later, the 30-something couple make a generous joint income of just under $300,000. That income, their hard work, and a dash of savvy investing are largely responsible for the lifestyle they lead — but there's another big factor. The Johnsons are DINKS, a dual-income couple with no kids.

The costs of rearing a child have skyrocketed in recent years, especially as parents get less help from their families and communities. Raising a kid could cost parents upward of $26,000 this year. Being a DINK has always been a way to save money, but as the stigma around the choice to be child-free has faded, more and more Americans see being a DINK as the key to a new American dream of financial stability, freedom of choice, and a comfortable retirement. DINKs are proudly emerging as an aspirational class for young people — and they're ready to live it up.

Lifestyles of the DINKs and the child-free

Johnson's Tinder profile set her on her path to DINKhood. In early adulthood, she never felt the desire to have children but wanted to keep an open mind. As the years went on, even as she saw her peers having kids, she said her "beliefs just never changed and completely solidified." So when she set up her dating profile, Johnson included in her bio that she didn't want to have kids of her own.

"I just wanted to weed out the ones I wouldn't be compatible with," she said. It worked. Johnson recalled that on their second or third date, she and her now-husband discussed the topic to make sure they were on the same page. The pair married in 2022, and Johnson said their decision to live as DINKs had been enriching.

"It makes my life more meaningful," the occupational therapist said of her choice to be child-free. "I feel like I can give more to my patients at work. I have more time to see my loved ones and family."

Beyond the emotional value Johnson ascribes to her DINK status, there are the dollars-and-cents benefits to the lifestyle. Her husband, who works in banking, is "a very big spreadsheet guy," Johnson said, and the couple track their finances "religiously." Part of that maniacal focus is tracking their net worth. The latest tally? About $1.1 million, a combination of the equity they've been able to accumulate in their new-build, suburban Minneapolis townhome and their retirement accounts.

It makes my life more meaningful. I feel like I can give more to my patients at work. I have more time to see my loved ones and family.

As an occupational therapist who works with older people, Johnson said, she sees "one of the biggest downsides to being a DINK is not having your children there to support you and help you age in place as you get older." So in addition to enjoying travel now, it's important for the couple to have "the financial resources in place to support safe living when we're old," she said.

For many adults, having children holds a massive amount of intrinsic value, but there's no denying that those who choose to forgo parenthood gain a serious financial edge. In fact, the net-worth data from the Federal Reserve's most recent Survey of Consumer Finances showed there's never been a better time to be a DINK. Child-free couples' median net worth of $399,000 in 2022 was the highest of all types of family structures studied by the survey and almost $150,000 more than couples with kids. The median net worth of DINKs was also more than $100,000 higher than it was in 2019, and the gap between child-free couples and couples with kids has only widened as prices on items and services parents need most, such as childcare and food, have spiked.

Amy Blackstone, the author of the 2019 book "Childfree by Choice," said that the financial gap between DINKs and couples with kids wasn't solely because of the choice about children. In many cases, it's also a bit of selection bias.

"It's the people who already have higher incomes, higher education, and are generally more privileged who opt out of parenthood," she said.

Still, DINKs like the Johnsons demonstrate that as the American dream of homeownership and putting kids through college gets further out of reach, forgoing children is one way to achieve the upward economic mobility that many parents find more difficult to reach. Child-free couples have more free cash flow that can be invested in real estate or stocks. And while the pandemic's fiscal stimulus left pretty much everyone with more cash, DINKs seemed to emerge victorious in the battle to grow wealth. After a few years of saving, the Johnsons are free of student debt and said they're in a financial position to start planning for an early retirement in their 50s.

"I am from a middle-class family, and my husband from a lower-class upbringing," Johnson said. "He experienced paycheck-to-paycheck living, started his first job at age 11 delivering newspapers. We feel very fortunate for our current economic stability."

Of course, not all DINKs are raking in six-figure incomes and investing in real estate. Alex Killingsworth is a 25-year-old entrepreneur building a content-writing business, and his wife is a full-time graduate student. She makes $14,000 a year as a teaching assistant, while his business earned them $84,000 in 2023. Not having kids has allowed them to invest in his startup and her higher education, both of which they believe will pay off.

"I'm 'investing' in the work I'm doing," Killingsworth said. "Likewise for my wife, almost all of her income is going into research, so our actual take-home pay is quite a bit lower."

If they had kids, paying the bills could be tougher for them. Instead, they're buying wine and whiskey, maxing out a retirement account, and taking advantage of the freedom to spend Thanksgiving in Alaska, visit family in Texas, or go to Broadway shows in New York.

"I don't know if we have any hacks or tricks here, but I have been told all of the extra income has a tendency to dry up when you have kids," Killingsworth said. "I don't know if that's true, but it's better to overprepare than under, right?"

Growing acceptance

The financial upsides of being a DINK used to come with a cost: In 1974, a substitute teacher named Marcia Drut-Davis was fired from her job and received death threats after discussing her choice to be child-free on"60 Minutes."When another school asked her to give a speech on her decision, angry parents carrying signs calling her "the devil's sister" crowded the entrance, and the teacher who provided closing remarks after the speech denounced her in front of the auditorium.

In her 2013 book, "Confessions of a Childfree Woman," Drut-Davis recalls the teacher saying: "How will you feel when you're old and alone with no one to take care of you?How will you feel without a grandchild to give you chocolate kisses? You're a sad excuse for a woman."

For decades, the social stigma around choosing not to have children has been substantial, but Blackstone said that she'd noticed a major shift in acceptance since she began research for her book in 2008.

"I would say that it's millennials and Gen Z who have really done the heavy lifting in terms of bringing this conversation out into the open," she said.

That's not to say Gen X didn't contribute to the conversation — Blackstone is a child-free Xer — but she said the younger generations' experiences with the 2008 financial crisis, accelerated climate crisis, and increasingly divisive politics made the choice to forgo kids more acceptable to a wider group.

One 2022 Nature paper from the researchers Zachary P. Neal and Jennifer Watling Neal found that nearly half the adults they studied were parents and 22% were child-free by choice. The rest were ambivalent, undecided, unable to have kids, or planning to have them. In the 2020 US census, 87 million Americans were between the ages of 20 and 46. If you apply the findings from the Neals' study, that means roughly 19 million millennial and Gen Z adults of childbearing age were child-free by choice. That same research, which polled 1,500 Michigan adults, found that while parents felt warmer toward fellow parents, "both parents and child-free people feel about the same toward child-free people." The report concluded: "Although parents really like other parents, they don't dislike child-free people."

Sentiment actually seems to be shifting in the opposite direction: In a summer 2022 Harris Poll of 1,054 American adults, 20% of all adults — and 27% of millennials — agreed "that people should stop having children because of the harm it causes," specifically the harm to the environment, animals, and even other people. Similarly, about one-third of all adults — and over 40% of millennials — said that they agreed "people should stop having children because their children's quality of life will be poor."

And then there's social media and our identity-obsessed culture. Child-free people now have more and more platforms to connect with each other and flaunt their no-kids lifestyles of extensive travel, impeccable homes, and spoiled pets. The communities devoted to a child-free lifestyle are booming: The subreddit r/childfree, focused on "topics and links of interest to childfree individuals," boasts 1.5 million members. TikTok videos about DINKs rack up millions of views and hundreds of thousands of likes. DINKs, GINKs, "rich aunties," and DINKWADs — DINKs with a dog — have become aspirational identities for younger generations.

We hang out with other people's kids every once in a while, but then we happily just give them back to their parents.

Stigma against DINKS certainly remains — just look at the comments of "selfish" and "missing out" on child-free TikTok videos. But they're overshadowed by comments of support. As Blackstone, who wrote the 2021 book on the topic, said, what happened to Drut-Davis wouldn't happen today.

"I've gotten the random email telling me that I'm miserable and going to die alone or that I'm right, I shouldn't have kids anyway," she said. "But nothing like what Marcia got in the 1970s."

With the rise in childcare costs, education, and other parenting expenses that have outpaced inflation, it's hard to deny that a two-track economy has emerged. There are the DINKs who can seize the American dream and the parents who are struggling to stay afloat in a country without guaranteed paid leave or affordable childcare. It's no wonder that so many people are suddenly interested in becoming a DINK.

Johnson said that her DINK lifestyle kept her plenty busy. She invests time in her hobby of landscape photography, and though she's questioned whether it's a selfish choice, she overall feels more "well rounded and healthier" than she would if she had kids, she said.

"We hang out with other people's kids every once in a while," she said, "but then we happily just give them back to their parents."

Mending Shadows // Chapter 23

Summary:

Y/N was a simple Scavenger of Lucis, until meeting a deadly blow at the hands of an infected creature. At the crossroads of death, they are found by Niflheim’s cryptic Chancellor with his own agenda. Now bonded to Ardyn Izunia, and tossed into the world of Niflheim, Y/N struggles to cope with their new life as an Imperial Icon all the while battling their feelings toward their fate and that of Ardyn’s.

By the time the tour of Altissa and the sights were complete, Y/N was drenched in sweat and their legs felt heavy against the material of the clothes they wore. They couldn’t help but feel some resentment toward Tuti for picking out their evening attire. It didn’t mesh well with the warm and humid climate Accordo was well known for. The rest of the experience however was quite enlightening. Tuti seemed to be enjoying herself as well. Y/N found it amusing how childlike she became throughout the venture. 

Y/N lost count of the various cafes, markets, and even gondola rides they took while under the wing of The Serpent Society; a powerful faction of Accordo socialites who held great reverence for the legendary Leviathan, and Accordo’s governmental powers. Many in the group were known for being generous benefactors of the local economy, and while Accordo may not have had the strong military might that Niflheim and Lucis had, the country had both nations beat when it came to finances. Y/N couldn’t help but muse that if Ardyn had a small team of these guys to help him budget, he’d never have to see another bill in his life.

Unlike the High Imperials of Niflheim, Y/N noted these folks were quite welcoming. While not warm, and certainly cautious at times, they didn’t look down upon Y/N. If anything, Y/N got the impression most were afraid of them due to the association with Ardyn. The thought hurt Y/N while they interacted with the various men and women of the group. They couldn’t help but wonder if the connections they were building were superficial. It was more than likely the case, but despite their feelings, Y/N counted their blessings they didn’t have to deal with someone like Jessica Rubios among the flock. The image of the haughty woman getting too personal with Ardyn at the Imperial Banquet had them grimace from time to time. Fortunately, the thoughts ceased when one of the men pointed out Y/N appearing uncomfortable. 

After the tour was complete and the party retreated to their private residence near a cluster of waterfalls, Y/N went through what Ardyn and they had rehearsed. They smiled and laughed alongside everyone while making jabs at Lucis. It pained Y/N to lace their words with venom toward their homeland, but they stuck to the script. No deviation could be afforded as Ardyn had stressed in the past. While nothing would be done in a single day, the seeds of doubt toward Niflheim's archrival had been sown. Y/N had no doubt the majority of the Serpents would think twice before supporting the Lucian economy in any fashion through their own. 

“While this has been quite a show, I do believe our luncheon will be ready soon! We should all head toward the dining room and be seated.” A man named Ketyr announced. 

The conversation of politics quickly turned into a competition of who was the most hungry as Y/N and the others rose to their feet within the lounge. 

“Y/N!” Tuti approached from the direction the group was heading toward. She panted some after reaching Y/N’s side. “I can’t believe I neglected to ask you this earlier! Do you have any food sensitivities the chef should be aware of? Accordo is known for incorporating herbs into their cuisine that can upset the stomach if you haven’t been accustomed!” 

How the hell am I supposed to know? It’s my first time in Accordo… Y/N thought to themself. 

“Sweet dear, it’ll be fine!” 

Y/N felt they must’ve hesitated for too long, for Betrys D’bhara answered on their behalf. 

Betrys was a woman of forty two who could easily pass for someone in their fifties. Y/N attributed this to the loss Betrys endured. They had come to find out during the tour that she had married twice. One husband died during war with Niflheim, and the other was lost to sickness. Whether it was the scourge or not was anyone’s guess. Despite her older appearance, she had very kind eyes that were the color of fresh soil, and high cheekbones that were softened by dimples and wavy shoulder length blond hair. 

“You need not fret on behalf of your charge! We have staff on standby to help should anyone have a reaction. Would you mind if I stole Y/N for a moment?” Betrys smiled. 

“O-of course! Silly me!” Tuti gave her respects to both Betrys and Y/N before scampering off to further aid the personal staff of the Serpents. 

Betrys grinned, sighing in relief as she focused her attention onto Y/N. “She’s quite charming, your Imperial Help. A bit of a ditz, but I can tell she admires you.” 

“I think that’s what helped her get this far.” Y/N mused, smiling while Betrys chuckled at the remark. 

Y/N looked ahead, seeing most of the group was far away now. Before they could say anything about it, Betrys gestured with her left arm in dismissal. 

“Unlike Higher Imperials, we tend to take a more lax approach in Altissa. There’s no need for rushing around. Besides, I heard a mutual friend of ours was interested in a tomb.” 

How the hell did she know…? Y/N assumed the shock on their features must’ve been too telling, for Betrys’s grin widened more, seemingly trying to hide a laugh that wanted to escape her mouth. 

“Walk with me, Y/N.” Betrys offered her right arm to Y/N’s left. The latter hesitated at first before accepting, and then the two walked side by side while admiring the scenery outside the open windows. 

“I know you must’ve been asked a thousand times already, but how are you liking Altissa?” 

“It’s quite beautiful,” Y/N admitted. “It’s not as cold as Niflheim, and there’s few places in Lucis where you get waterscapes this vast. I loved the tour by the way. Even though I admit I’m boiling hot in these garbs.”  

Betrys laughed. “I can have my staff fetch you some other clothes that fit the climate after we eat.”

“I don’t want to impose--”

“Please, consider it a welcome gift to our shores.” Betrys let out a breath, furrowing her brows while still smiling. “It’s a shame you’ve come to our country under your circumstances, but I must say its refreshing to speak with a Lucian about the war versus another Imperial like my cousin.” 

“Your cousin?”

“You may know of her. She’s a Higher Imperial, once known as Jessica D’Bhara but she since took on the name Rubios after marrying.” 

Speak of the devil… Y/N bit the inside of their cheek at hearing the name. They didn’t realize their muscles had visibly tensed until Betrys had nonverbally pointed it out with a raised brow.

“Are you alright?” 

“My apologies,” Y/N sighed. “I know Jessica. I’ve met her a few times but never had the pleasure of her full company.” 

They swallowed upon realizing the disdain in their voice must’ve been too blatant despite sugar coating their words with formality. Y/N lost count of the onslaught of curses they mentally gave themself. There was no way Betrys would divulge anything further. Not when there was malice being thrown at kin. Before the image of Ardyn looking pissed off could fully be fleshed out in mind, Y/N’s thoughts were interrupted. 

“You can relax. Between you, me and the six, I don’t much care for her myself.” Betrys grinned, giving a reassuring pat to Y/N with her free arm. 

“But she’s family.” 

“She’s a twat.”

Y/N’s eyes nearly bulged out. The blunt proclamation made it hard to keep a straight face, as did the contagious laughter Betrys had unleashed. It was so loud that there was no doubt the others could pick up on the cackles. 

“I didn’t realize there was animosity.” Was the only remark Y/N felt appropriate to respond with. They felt relieved when her antics died down. Saving them the trouble of trying to remain poised. 

“Long story short, Jessica’s side of the family immigrated to Niflheim decades ago to seek greener pastures. I’d soon move to the swamps of Duscae than live under full Imperial rule, but that’s just me. No offense.” 

“None taken.” Y/N snorted. 

“Anyhow,” Betrys cleared her throat. “Her and I still keep in touch for the sake of family business. I don’t hold love for her as a person. I take it she’s tested your wits?” 

“Among other things,” Y/N admitted. 

“Do tell!” 

“Is that appropriate?” 

Betrys smiled. “Nothing about our conversation is, especially the piece regarding your Chancellor. Might as well make the most of it.” 

Y/N smirked slightly at the comment. Despite the full disclosure Betrys offered, Y/N thought it best to not to say too much given they barely knew one another. They reminded themself of their debut night, and how some of their first impressions didn't go well. The last thing Y/N wanted, was to scare Betrys off. 

“I last saw Jessica at the Imperial Banquet. She kept jabbing at my Lucian roots, and wouldn’t leave Chancellor Izunia be for a good portion of the event. Since my debut, she’s had it out for me whenever I’ve had to interact in public gatherings.” 

“What a tramp!” Betrys grimaced, not having a care in the world if anyone else heard her vulgarity. She ignored the appalled looks some of the staff gave in passing. “Even with a good husband that practically sucks her toes, it’s never enough!” 

Y/N raised a brow. “Pardon?” 

“Jessica fancies Chancellor Izunia. You should see the texts she sends to me about him! I admit he’s a handsome fellow in a peculiar light, but no matter how powerful he is among the hierarchy, I wouldn’t leave someone loyal to moonlight with him.” 

Y/N felt a sensation of butterflies in the pit of their stomach. The flighty feeling ached as did the way their pulse felt heavy. It was hard to swallow, and Y/N couldn’t tell if they were saddened or angry at what Betrys confided. 

Get over yourself… It took Y/N much willpower to redirect the conversation, focusing on what Ardyn wanted them to obtain from this experience. 

“Forgive me for changing subject,” Y/N started, clearing their throat. “How did you know Chancellor Izunia was interested in the tomb?” 

Betrys chuckled, and knowingly gazed upon Y/N. “There’s nothing to forgive! I’m one of Accordo’s finest patrons of archaeology. I have connections to the Altissian Prehistory Association. Chancellor Izunia is well aware of that, being an enthusiast and a collector himself of Solheim and Ancient Lucian artifacts. Him and I have traded historical information quite extensively over the years.” 

Y/N recalled some of the old texts and materials Ardyn had in his library back home. They remembered trying to make sense of it, but nothing came to mind. When Betrys mentioned Solheim, it all began to click as to why Y/N either couldn’t read certain books or had difficulty placing the date of paintings he had on display. They also wondered how much Betrys really knew about Ardyn; if she had any inkling about his past given that it sounded like he indulged her curiosity quite often.

“I mean,” Y/N snapped themself back into the conversation. “How did you know to approach me about it?” 

“Call it a woman's intuition,” Betrys mused with a laugh before she sighed, deciding not to play coy. “My honest answer? A little birdy of mine heard about it in passing, when Chancellor Izunia and Madam Secretary went to the House of the Courts. Knowing that his guest, you, were coming to our luncheon, I deduced he must’ve sent you to gather information because he’d have no time to pay me a visit.”

“Does that offend you?” 

Betrys’s smile couldn’t get any wider as she sighed contently, giving a bow to some staff that walked past Y/N and her before she continued. 

“Somewhat, but let me preface that I am not upset with your role in this. He’s a busy man as much as I am a busy woman. However, I’m growing tired of this relationship being one sided. You see, he hasn’t given me much in return the last couple exchanges. I’m generous with my intel, but I do draw a line in the sand considering I don't wish to lose face with the Prehistory Association. I’m curious what kind of offers he’s told you to sell to me.” 

Y/N could feel their blood freezing for a moment. Like with Madam Secretary, Ardyn didn’t give them any kind of advice as to how to win Betrys’s good graces. He especially neglected to share what kind of history he had with this older woman. It made Y/N wonder what else he was hiding regarding her. Their face grew warm at the latter thought. 

“I’m afraid I don’t have much to offer to you.” 

“That’s unfortunate. Does your Chancellor have any brothers?” 

Y/N did a double take, and nervously chuckled at the suggestive cadence. 

“None that are alive.” Y/N murmured as Betrys laughed. “Why do you ask?”

“That’s a pity. Regarding the tomb, it’s located off the coast of a small island near Avem. I haven’t sent too many expedition scouts over there, but the Prehistory Association will be excavating soon. If your Chancellor wants first pickings, he needs to act fast. I doubt he’ll be able to charm his way through once the officials arrive. Not to mention Lucian reps of the monarchy wanting to reclaim their ancestor once the discovery goes public.”

“I appreciate you being so forthcoming, but what does this have to do with Chancellor Izunia having brothers?” 

“Would you say Chancellor Izunia is a gentleman who honors his word?” 

The delightful grin of a smirk that Betrys demonstrated had goosebumps travel up Y/N’s arm. 

“In a manner of speaking, yeah. I’d agree to that he is. I’m afraid though, I’m not following what you’re driving at.” Y/N replied, slightly biting their tongue. It was as if Betrys was plotting something humorously sinister, and their curiosity couldn’t help but want to take the bait. 

“I’d like for your Chancellor to treat me to a night out in exchange for what I’ve shared with you. It’s the least he owes me. Not to mention it would feel vindictive rubbing it in Jessica’s face. If she were to also find out you had a hand in the arrangement, I don’t believe she would be too keen on messing with you anymore. Hells, she may even try suckering up to your good nature to get close to him!” 

Y/N felt their face blushing and could scare believe the plot Betrys laid out so casually. “And the brother remark was just…?” 

“I forget you weren’t brought up in the lifestyle I or Jessica had been molded to. In polite society, if I were to ask for the hand of a sibling in exchange for information, it would be an insult to both Chancellor Izunia and Jessica in the same breath. It’s a power play of sorts. Letting Jessica be aware that I can court who I please while she can’t, and it lets Chancellor Izunia be aware of the fact that I can use someone close against him at a later time should he try avoiding me in the future.” 

“Oh,” It didn’t really make sense to Y/N, why people would go out of their way to pull off schemes such as the one Betrys mentioned; but it was as the older woman stated: this wasn’t the life Y/N had grown up into. This further made the knots in Y/N’s stomach grow, not helping the anger that radiated in their chest. 

“I suppose I can relay this to him.” Y/N murmured. “He’s not really social outside of politics.” 

“I’m aware,” Betrys grinned for a moment. “Embarrassing him in public for sending a third party to speak on his behalf is the main reason why I want to do this. Aside from helping you get Jessica off your back.” 

“I know you have your qualms with Jessica, but why help me?” 

“Because I know you like Chancellor Izunia more than you let on.” 

Betrys stopped both herself and Y/N from proceeding any further. The older woman’s eyes studied Y/N with consideration, as if trying to be certain of her own thoughts. She smiled when having caught the glimmer of light in Y/N’s eyes that gave everything and nothing away. 

 “Don’t worry, it’s our little secret.” 

“There’s nothing to hide.” Y/N said in their defense, trying to downplay the accusation. 

“Oh, I’m sure there isn’t.” Betrys slyly remarked. “I assure you I won’t get frisky with the him when he pays his dues. Anyway, lets enjoy our lunch, hmm?” 

Y/N didn’t know if they wanted to scream at the top of their lungs and run away, or curse Betrys out. Neither option was wise, and so they bit back their tongue and proceeded with the socialite to the dining room. 

The meal was quite pleasant, and after having their fill of exotic dishes and other treats, Y/N felt calmer. They wondered if perhaps their negative behavior regarding Ardyn, Jessica, and Betrys was due to not having eaten anything for most of the day. Regardless, the conversation with Betrys nerved them still. She gave no reason to indicate contempt, and Y/N counted their stars. Betrys was civil throughout the luncheon, and Y/N allowed themself to let go of whatever ill feelings remained. 

After the luncheon, the party retreated to one of the decks outside of the main building to enjoy the waterfalls and lush greenery. Y/N was once again speaking with Betrys and some other folks, getting in depth about their opinion on Niflheim entertainment versus what Lucis offered. A joke was made at some point by Ketyr, and everyone including Y/N laughed at it. Suddenly, all noise began to recede and the only thing Y/N could register was the sound of a thousand voices screeching behind their skull. 

Y/N’s throat seized, and they shot up from their seat and bolted to the edge of the deck. Leaning part of their body forward, they violently hacked and coughed scourge and bile. Their world began to open to something bigger than itself. 

In lightning flashes, Y/N was hauled away by an angry mob of hundreds. Their body was being pelted with rocks and rotten food, and their skin bubbled while being scorched under the rays of the sun. The blows barely put a dent into the heavy weight that lay upon Y/N’s heart. Terror and sadness had no place in their mind, for they were numb and tired. So tired.   In the distance, Y/N could see and hear people bound in chains pleading for mercy to be shown. Many were silenced as ancient crownsguard struck down whoever spoke out of turn. Blood and sweat intermingled in the thick air, and Y/N wanted to throw up but their body hadn’t the strength. Y/N knew they should’ve felt enraged, they should’ve felt something, but they were paralyzed as if incapable of attachment. That is, until they saw the mangled body of a black chocobo. The name of the creature was fuzzy, but they knew this was a lifelong friend. One of the last tethers keeping them bound to their love for Eos.     Y/N’s heart shattered into a million fragments as they were further dragged down the street. Men paraded with the avian’s head on a stick, desecrating the once living creature and whatever was left of Y/N’s compassion. They let out the most unholy scream, somehow their body burst with energy as they rose to their feet to attack the men. All hell broke loose, before they were dogpiled and thrown to the back of a wagon. The dark haired man Y/N had fought before--the one who slain Aera, Somnus--approached with a remorseful expression. He raised a mythril based staff up high, and slammed it into Y/N's left leg. They could hear their bones shatter against their eardrums as their entire limb felt as if broken glass had entombed it.    "I'm sorry...Ardyn." 

Before the situation could play out any further, time shifted yet again. Faces came and went. Y/N could see Aera dying in their arms, playing in a field with a young Somnus, fishing with Aera when she was a child, and a host of other memories rampage over their mind. Good and bad. Intimate and terrifying. It was as if their brain was a computer, attempting to download a whole other life into it's blueprint, and it so badly wanted to explode. 

Y/N’s consciousness managed to swim to the surface, only to be drowned out by Ardyn’s various points of view. The jolt of being pulled away from the edge of the deck, accompanied by a searing burn to their right shoulder, roped Y/N back to reality. 

“Y/N!” Tuti raised her voice in a harsh whisper, giving their shoulders a shake. “Y/N! Are you okay?” 

“Tuti?”

Y/N grimaced from her touch, retreating their right arm away. The pain grew worse. 

“Y/N, I have a napkin. Here,” Tuti whispered as she handed the cloth to them. “Cover the lower half of your face. The scourge veins are showing! Keep your head down and face into the napkin, I’ll lead us out and call upon Loqui to come fetch us!” 

“Good gracious, is everything alright?” 

Y/N could hear the concern in Betrys voice from behind as Tuti shielded them away from the curious onlookers. 

“A thousand apologies,” Tuti began, doing her best not to give away her own fears as she addressed the Serpents. She then started to lie through her teeth. “Y/N is still recovering from a recent hospital visit in Niflheim. I think they had too much excitement today and it’s caught up with them!” 

“Should we call upon a medical servicer?” Betrys worriedly asked. 

“That won’t be necessary! I think some rest will do the trick!” Tuti chirped, trying best to downplay the severity of what was going on. 

“It’s probably for the best,” One of the Serpents interrupted. Both Betrys and Tuti were visibly confused at the look of fright that plagued the older gentleman's features. “I received word from a messenger that the House of the Courts has been attacked. From what is known, the officials are sheltering in place. We are to do the same. I think it's best if you take Y/N back to your lodging and wait for word from Chancellor Izunia."

“R-right away!” Tuti exclaimed. She quickly performed her complimentary bows of leave. “T-thank you all so much for your kind hospitality on behalf of Y/N and myself! We’ll be in touch!” 

“There’s a vehicle prepared for you at front with one of your soldiers awaiting. Please do be careful and notify us when you reach safety!” Ketyr exclaimed.

“We will!” Tuti hollered as she ushered Y/N off the deck and away from the group with haste. 

It wasn’t long until Y/N was in the car, and they once more coughed violently into the napkin amid tears streaming down their eyes. The scourge was violently constricting against their entire nervous system. It felt like a snake taking its time to suffocate its meal before consumption. Although no wound had shown itself, Y/N's arm felt like it was melting away. 

“What happened to Y/N?!” Loqui shouted from the passenger seat as he gestured for the driver to speed up. 

“They got sick from the food being served! I assure you they’ll be fine!” Tuti swallowed, doing her part to comfort Y/N, all the while hide from Loqui what was truly going on. She never in her life felt so nervous before. Her heart pounded.

“Lieutenant Tummelt, do you know what’s going on?” Tuti whispered and brushed some strands of hair out of Y/N’s face. She wiped away at the sweat that pooled on their skin. 

“From what I know, it was an assassination attempt.” The driver said. He swallowed nervously at the glare Loqui gave, and decided it was best to let his superior do the talking while he drove. 

“Protestors tried to deal a blow to the Chancellor and Accordo officials in protest to the recent negotiations between our countries. Chancellor Izunia was wounded, but he's stable from what I've heard." 

“What?” Y/N struggled to breath out, and started coughing again. 

“Shhh,” Tuti coaxed Y/N to lay back and press their head to the cool window, all the while still keeping their face low and shielded. 

“While our men and Accordian soldiers round up the trespassers, we need to stay low and wait for the Chancellor to give further command.” Loqui firmly finished his thought. His eyes glanced to side mirror of the car, and he caught a glimpse of Y/N through it. He furrowed his brows, and did a double take. Eyes widening in shock, Loqui turned around in the seat, only to see Y/N covering their mouth. 

“What’s wrong?” Y/N managed to choke out. 

Loqui blinked a few times, seeing that their eye color was normal and not the abyssal black and gold that stared at him seconds ago. He chalked it up to his nerves being fired off, and offered a smile. 

“Nothing to worry about,” Loqui shook his head, and once more faced forward in his seat. “Rest up back there with Tuti. I’ll keep you guys safe.” 

Y/N’s entire body shuddered. Turning their attention to the window, they watched as buildings blurred past their vision to the speed of the car. A flurry of storm clouds drifted over the area. Y/N found it ironic how the weather seemed to match what they felt inside. The soft pitter patter of rain began to dance upon the car roof. 

As they drove closer to the heart of the capitol, Y/N could see the House of the Courts from afar. If there was one time Y/N wished telepathy were possible, this would be it. Despite the agony they faced, Y/N thought about the bleedthrough and wondered if Ardyn was truly alright.
