3 September 2023 - Olympia

We woke up this morning in Olympia and ate breakfast in the hotel we were staying at. We left around 8 am for the Olympic site. We arrived and started walking around the site. It has lots of greenery and trees that are kept continually watered. This is to keep them damp so they are less vulnerable to fire. Kalliope told us that over the course of a tour she gave, one person counted over 1600 shrines across the places they had travelled over a period of 4 days.

Once inside the site, we went to the left where the temples to Hera and Gaia were. After that we saw a fountain that was made by the Romans. You can distinguish between Roman and Grecian buildings because the Greeks used local stone, which was full of fossils and shells, and was porous, while the Romans used small red bricks and mortar. There were several instances where the Romans had gone and added to Greek-made buildings, resulting in a combination of stones and bricks. After the fountain we went over to the field, where the races were run. The 4 girls + Mrs Poe and Elise raced two thirds the length of the field, and Mrs Poe was the victor. Next, all 7 guys and Dr. Depoe raced the full length of the field. Ryan won, followed by Caleb and then Josh.

Following the field we went and saw several miscellaneous buildings, including a dining hall and judge’s quarters. Next up was the huge temple to Zeus, with the columns fallen in ruins around it, and the one restored pillar towering over the group. After that we went and saw Phidias’s workshop, which was later converted into an early church. That structure was one that had a mixture of Greek stones and Roman bricks. We then saw the places were athletes trained, and learned about how some pillars were ionic and some were Doric. This was because the site was restored over time as the columns evolved.

After we finished touring the site, we went and visited an olive oil tasting place, with a souvenir shop conjoined. Brett bought a bronze cast blunt sword which with a leaflike blade and a black grip. We then had lunch at the restaurant around the corner from the shop, then after a brief time of sitting around (and petting a local cat who was quite friendly) we boarded the bus and began the lengthy drive back to Athens.

A Couple Renovating a 115-Year-Old Building Discovered Two 60-Foot-Long Hidden Murals

What started out as a couple's renovation project to convert a historic building into a bar has turned into an effort to restore decades-old artwork in a small Washington town.

Nick and Lisa Timm purchased the building in Okanogan, located about four hours east of Seattle, at the end of 2021. This past week, they discovered 60-foot murals painted on canvases along its north and south walls.

We were about 20 minutes from covering up the walls," Nick said on Wednesday. "I then was like 'Well, let's just look at what's behind all this plaster.'"

As the plaster peeled away, they discovered a giant mural -- stretching 60 feet long and 20 feet high -- depicting a lake, cabins and trees.

One crew member threw out the idea that there could be another canvas on the opposite wall. Lo and behold, there was indeed a matching mural.

They found the murals at around 5 p.m. and had been working since 5 a.m., Nick said. But the team stayed for four more hours to uncover the rest of the artwork.

"It was like a lightning bolt of energy," Nick said. "We were just hooting and hollering and pulling things down."

The Timms moved back to Okanogan last year to take care of Nick's father, who was diagnosed with lung cancer. After he died in September, a family friend told the couple about the chance to purchase the building.

"One of our main goals moving back was to reenergize Okanogan and then this happened," Nick said.

Dating back to around 1907, the building had served as a movie theater, a pool hall and even a rooster fighting rink, according to Nick.

The couple's plan was to turn the 3,000-square-foot space into a bar and gathering place for the community, building on Nick's experience running bars and restaurants in Olympia.

"It's funny how this worked out," Nick said. "We were going to make it a historical showcase by bringing in a bunch of historical stuff about the area."

After the Timms' big find, the Okanogan County Historical Society was able to dig up a newspaper clipping from 1915 that reveals the original plan for the murals.

A local artist was set to paint the murals for what was the Hub Theatre at that time, according to the clipping, which was provided by the society.

"The new improvements at the Hub include 120 feet of panoramic landscape scenery in light tans," the clipping reads.

Now, that panoramic scenery will be cautiously taken down, refurbished and rehung. Nick said some sections of the murals have extensive water damage that they want to get restored as quickly as possible.

It will likely be a pricey process. The couple have started a GoFundMe page to gain support from the community.

The Timms had hoped to open their renovated bar by the end of March, but it may now take until midsummer to finish work on the murals, Nick said.

The mural will be the centerpiece of the establishment, and the plan still is to fill the rest of the space with other historical items. Nick's family has lived in the area for centuries, so many of the items have been passed down for generations. Other memorabilia have been donated by others in the community.

And Okanogan's future gathering place already has a name: the Red Light Bar, an ode to the singular red light in town.

Hello! I’m a devotee of Hera and one of the things she tasked me with is to eventually visit Greece and “walk where she walked”. I’ve been slowly creating an itinerary but I was wondering if you had any suggestions? I know I wanted to visit Samos and the Heraion, the Temple of Hera in Olympia, Argos, etc. I’ve heard a lot about the river Hera bathes in to restore her “maidenhood” but I haven’t had a whole lot of luck finding it on a map. But anyways! Any places you think would be good?

If you plan to stop by Argos, the Kanathos is probably the river you're looking for (Pausanias 2.38.2). On a modern map, this should lead you to Nafplio.

The thing is, local legends work in a way where you could have more than one city claim to have the right river, grave etc. and I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case for the river Hera bathed in.

On a sunny afternoon in April, Katie Nichols crouched over the edges of a small oyster reef in Newport Bay, California, peering into the mud that had been exposed by the receding tide. Where all I saw was a jumble of interchangeable shell fragments, Nichols quickly spotted what she was looking for.

“There,” she said, pointing to a small, white shell. “That’s what a native looks like.”

Nichols was pointing to an Olympia oyster, the only oyster species native to the Pacific Coast of the United States. Smaller and rounder than non-native Pacific oysters, it was once abundant in the bays and estuaries of the California coast — but during the gold rush in the 1880s, the native species was overharvested, and the population collapsed. The oyster became “functionally extinct” in Southern California, according to Nichols, and today, much of the habitat where it could have settled has been degraded.

Nichols, the marine restoration director of Orange County Coastkeeper, a nonprofit clean water organization in Southern California, is working on a project trying to resurrect the Olympia oyster — at least in Newport Bay — and is trying to understand whether the unassuming bivalve could be a key part of helping coastlines adapt to the impacts of climate change.

In 2017, Coastkeeper set out to put the idea of living shorelines to the test in Upper Newport Bay. A team of volunteers and restoration workers hauled 40,000 pounds of Pacific oyster shells in biodegradable bags made of coconut husk onto the shore, to create a structure in which the larvae of native oysters could settle. The Olympia oyster population “isn’t larvae limited,” says Nichols, meaning there are more than enough oyster larvae in the water to allow oysters to repopulate under the right conditions. The problem is the lack of suitable habitat for oyster reefs to form. Bringing in oyster shells to create a habitat allows these larvae to take root on the shoreline and form a self-sustaining oyster bed.

Having the ability and training of a very specialized general dentist has allowed me to change the lives of my patients. The training and education I received after dental school in the 2 year post graduate program from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry in Fixed Prosthodontics has been instrumental in ensuring successful outcomes for the patients that I treat.

My areas of special interest range from the simplest of procedures to the most advanced and complex cases. I am rewarded daily when I get to place an invisible filling, veneer or crown on an unattractive tooth and see my patients’ responses to their newly restored mouths. In the Community I am extremely excited to offer athletic mouth guards not only to professional athletes like the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team but also to local high school athletes. I have provided mouth guards for the Hinsdale Central High School girls’ Lacrosse team as well as the boys’ Hockey team . My affiliation with various organizations committed to the protection of our athletes has allowed me to pursue my passion, engineering and designing the most comfortable and protective mouth guards available.

Another endemic and very endangered butterfly species from rare prairie and dry oak savanna environments of the coastal Pacific Northwest: As of 2019, Taylor’s checkerspot butterfly (Euphydryas editha taylori) has recently been successfully reintroduced to the sensitive and ecologically unique South Puget Prairies through the help of prescribed fires meant to fight invasive Euro-American plant species and propagate native prairie species like blue camas.

Here’s a look at the extent of the South Puget Prairies - sometimes called the South Sound Prairie - which exist south of Olympia, between Tacoma and Chehalis. [Source: Lalita M. Calabria, et al., 2015.]

Both “prairie” and “oak woodland/savanna” could be referred to as “dryland” environments, which are rare in the Pacific Northwest due to mild marine climate, moisture, and dense coniferous forest even at lower elevations. While Garry oak woodland and savanna does exist farther north in small pockets on eastern Vancouver Island, near Sequim on the eastern Olympic Peninsula, and also at the Fraser Delta near Vancouver (all 3 of these regions along the shores of the Salish Sea), the only truly sizable region of contiguous native prairie north of Portland, Oregon, is probably the South Puget Prairie region. Lush rainforest covers the Coast Range to the west, and more rainforest covers the western slopes of the Cascades to the east, but the relatively dry lowland corridor in-between these two rainforest zones allows prairie to exist. The South Puget Prairie area is highly endangered, and hosts some small, isolated and notable populations of endemic lichens, endemic invertebrates, rare reptiles, and endemic mammals (pocket gophers).

Excerpts from “Endangered Butterflies Rebound in South Sound Prairies - Scatter Creek: WDFW Celebrates Reintroduction of Taylor’s Checkerspot Butterfly,” Daniel Warn for Nisqually Valley News, 9 May 2019:

The scientists at the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife have successfully reintroduced the endangered Taylor’s checkerspot butterfly into South Sound prairies, specifically at the Scatter Creek Wildlife Area in Thurston County and Joint Base Lewis McChord. [...]

In the past decade, WDFW has tripled the number of Taylor’s checkerspot butterflies in the South Sound prairies.

“No one has been able to do this successfully with this group of butterflies, so this is really exciting on a national scale,” Linders said. Taylor’s checkerspot butterfly is one of about 20 subspecies of Edith’s checkerspot butterfly, and is the only one that has successfully been reintroduced to the wild.

The butterfly became endangered due to loss of habitat from the advance of invasive plant species like Scotch broom. So the first method of restoring the subspecies was to restore the prairies themselves.

“The easiest way to do it is to start with prescribed fire,” he said. “We’ll select areas that could use a burn and that will open up a canvas, essentially, of landscape. Then the invasive weeds will emerge first, once we get some precipitation. So we’ll herbicide those out, and that will give us the opportunity to select against them. A lot of the native plants will emerge after that.”

Those native plants are what the Taylor’s checkerspot butterfly needs to survive. These plants include the blue camas and Indian paintbrushes found in the prairies.

“Over the course of the last 20 years, we’ve been working hard on restoring the habitat on this prairie,” Linders said. “It used to be covered with scotch broom, five, six, seven feet tall. We have gotten rid of that and are restoring a lot of the native prairie plants. These efforts preserve a lot of the native nectar and host plants for the Taylor’s checkerspot butterfly, and also for a whole suite of other species that are also very rare on these prairies.”

In 2007, WDFW officially started the program, testing the waters of this type of restoration work. The larva were reared in captivity throughout their hibernation stage, before the caterpillars could be released onto the prairies. [...] [End excerpt.]
