#oyster beds

Today I got to volunteer at Billion Oyster Project, a nonprofit that takes oyster, scallop, and other shells from restaurants in New York City and uses them to make substrates to grow oyster reefs!

These oyster reefs not only are restoring the water in the area to what it was like pre-colonialism (there were oyster reefs all around NYC, and it was known that the oysters were sometimes able to grow as big as dinner plates) but it also cleans the water, provides habitat, AND protects the city from deadly storm surges like it experienced with Superstorm Sandy.

You can see the shell piles and some reef balls they make to seed the oysters on. It's a nature based solution that benefits the city enormously (especially the restaurants that don't have to pay for by-the-pound shell water removal, they can just donate them!) that has been in action for YEARS. Solutions to the climate crisis are all around us, in our history, our stories, and our food. We just gotta implement them!

Across our projects we've worked with plenty of keystone species, so we've decided to start a series highlighting some of them! For today, let's look at the European Flat Oyster, the subject of our reintroduction project to the Cromarty Firth in Scotland.

European Flat Oysters (Ostrea edulis) are considered functionally extinct in many parts of Europe. Native oyster beds were once widespread in the UK and known as ‘the poor man’s food’, but have declined by 95% in the United Kingdom since the mid-19th century. This habitat-forming species would have once been present throughout our coastlines alongside other habitats such as seagrass beds, but now they are either absent or in relatively small, fragmented populations. There are no known remaining wild native oyster populations within the Cromarty Firth, but they were present in the area in the recent past. This community-led marine enhancement project, in partnership with Moray Ocean Community, aims to reintroduce native oysters to the Cromarty firth and generate open access data on the coastal and marine habitats found in the wider area.

There's some dude (derogatory) on FB who is PISSED people are pricing their farm fresh eggs at $2 and $3 a dozen instead of $4+, saying it's "disrespectful" and "undignified" and "I'm trying to feed my kids" like Sir, you are on a Facebook group page bitching about your neighbors egg prices because your pet chickens aren't earning you a living wage and you think it's your neighbors' fault, you do not have a leg to stand on here wrt dignity.

Also half the answers are like "I give them to friends and family free" or "I donate them to food banks" or "I'm making them affordable to folks who might not otherwise be able to get them now that they're so expensive in the store" and "if you think you're going to turn a profit keeping backyard chickens you have been wildly misled" and so on, and so forth, and I'm so living for it.

and I can tell you right now, he did NOT like my answer of "if you're trying to feed your kids, I hear eggs are edible."

EDIT: I got a tag that kinda upset me so I need to clarify here before I see anything else like this: this is Farsi, not Arabic. It's literally a racist stereotype that Persians are Arabs/that we speak Arabic and that all middle easterners are Arabs. English and Spanish and French and German and Italian all share the same alphabet but no one thinks they're the same language or that being able to read one means they can read all of them, so why are you assuming that for us?
