Across our projects we've worked with plenty of keystone species, so we've decided to start a series highlighting some of them! For today, let's look at the European Flat Oyster, the subject of our reintroduction project to the Cromarty Firth in Scotland.

European Flat Oysters (Ostrea edulis) are considered functionally extinct in many parts of Europe. Native oyster beds were once widespread in the UK and known as ‘the poor man’s food’, but have declined by 95% in the United Kingdom since the mid-19th century. This habitat-forming species would have once been present throughout our coastlines alongside other habitats such as seagrass beds, but now they are either absent or in relatively small, fragmented populations. There are no known remaining wild native oyster populations within the Cromarty Firth, but they were present in the area in the recent past. This community-led marine enhancement project, in partnership with Moray Ocean Community, aims to reintroduce native oysters to the Cromarty firth and generate open access data on the coastal and marine habitats found in the wider area.

There's some dude (derogatory) on FB who is PISSED people are pricing their farm fresh eggs at $2 and $3 a dozen instead of $4+, saying it's "disrespectful" and "undignified" and "I'm trying to feed my kids" like Sir, you are on a Facebook group page bitching about your neighbors egg prices because your pet chickens aren't earning you a living wage and you think it's your neighbors' fault, you do not have a leg to stand on here wrt dignity.

Also half the answers are like "I give them to friends and family free" or "I donate them to food banks" or "I'm making them affordable to folks who might not otherwise be able to get them now that they're so expensive in the store" and "if you think you're going to turn a profit keeping backyard chickens you have been wildly misled" and so on, and so forth, and I'm so living for it.

and I can tell you right now, he did NOT like my answer of "if you're trying to feed your kids, I hear eggs are edible."

EDIT: I got a tag that kinda upset me so I need to clarify here before I see anything else like this: this is Farsi, not Arabic. It's literally a racist stereotype that Persians are Arabs/that we speak Arabic and that all middle easterners are Arabs. English and Spanish and French and German and Italian all share the same alphabet but no one thinks they're the same language or that being able to read one means they can read all of them, so why are you assuming that for us?

LAST SONG I LISTENED TO: spotify last served me up "supercut" by lorde, which has a great fanvid here. speaking of fanvids i was just rewatching "therefore i am" by danneelswife on tumblr/froggyjackpack on yt, a testament to cas & crowley's worstieship.

FAVORITE PLACE: salamanca, spain. i spent 2 months there and didn't want to leave.

FAVORITE BOOK: i'm terrible at picking favorites. i'm not sure i can pick an actual favorite book that i read for like, fun and profit. my favorite work of literature for enjoyment is the student of salamanca/el estudiante de salamanca i think. my favorite fanfic is spirit of the west by teen_dean on ao3.

CURRENTLY READING: well, i need to read bury your gays by chuck tingle bc i preordered it but didn't wind up having much book reading time at the beach.

FAVORITE TV SHOW: 😔 listen no show is the 4d experience that is spn. apart from that you know what show i love that i was reminded of the other day? siberia. it was a show that was cancelled after one season from like the early 2000s but the setup is that it is filmed like and feels like a reality survival show a la survivor but then things get weird and it's great. it does end on a cliffhanger but i still highly recommend it for how it plays with the genre. it's very fun. apparently it is free on tubi right now if you want 11 succinct hours of some sci fi fun.

FAVORITE FOOD: i introduced my brother in law to oysters rockefeller. i offered him one and asked if he could have spinach, bc he's allergic to lettuce. he said wait, spinach? aren't they raw? and then when i passed it to him, he was like ow why is it hot????? i think i blew his mind. in the end i think he enjoyed it but it was hard to tell through his confusion. also he was in his own food heaven with the appetizer he ordered.

The Mothershuckers Oyster Cart

Open-air oyster carts used to be an integral part of New York City’s street food scene. Today, they are all but extinct. Benjamin “Moody” Harney created the Mothershuckers Oyster Cart in 2019 to change all of that.

Did you know that oysters were one of New York City's original street foods? Just imagine: standing at a street corner in Lower Manhattan on a crisp fall day slurping a dozen fresh, raw oysters from an oyster cart. Peddling oysters alongside hot buns and peanuts was a normal thing in New York City back in the late 1700s and 1800s. Today, it's a rarity. There is only one pushcart set up in all of Brooklyn: Benjamin "Moody" Harney's Mothershuckers Oyster Cart outside of Eugene & Co. on the corner of Tompkins Avenue and Jefferson Avenue. Inspired by the story of Thomas Downing, a.k.a. the Oyster King of New York, Moody started his business in the fall of 2019. Read the full article here.
