I have a confession to make…

The best fanfic I’ve ever written—and the only multi-chapter, comprehensive one too—is a Brian May fanfic that I’ve been writing on Wattpad (yikes, but you gotta understand that Wattpad used to be all the rage) for the past nearly half a decade. To be entirely fair though, I went on hiatus for a long while (since 2018 I think!!) and only got back to writing it last summer.

I know you have nothing against Ozai growing as a person. If Ozai grew as person without going through anything as extremely heart wrenching as losing a son as Iroh did, would that prove that deep down Ozai was always a better man than Iroh? A man who just needed his goodness to be nurtured.

Honestly, I don't believe in a "deep down", or that people can be inherently good or bad. We are what we do, and what we decide to do with the way life has shaped us.

That being said, Iroh had an emotional connection to his son, which is why the loss of him broke him and his beliefs enough for a change of heart. Meanwhile, Ozai has a very self obsessed mindset, and quite a lot of narcissistic tendencies. As shown many times thorough the series, Ozai sees his children as pawns, and doesn’t appear to have any emotional connection to them beyond that of manipulation and utilitarian perspectives. He quite literally sent his son away for what he believed would be forever the first chance he got.

Losing a child for him would be, in my opinion, more akin to losing a pawn or a possible rival than your own flesh and blood. I don't believe it'd change him as much as it changed Iroh.

On the other hand, Ozai is much better commited to his goals and beliefs, and much more proactive in his pursuit of them. He snatched the throne through quite an ingenious plan, and successfully groomed Azula to become his loyal knight. Through her he conquered Ba Sing Se with no casualties, and launched a very ambitious war plan to conquer the Earth Kingdom. In comparison, Iroh failed his 600 day siege of Ba Sing Se, losing his son in the process, fled before his own armies (very much a dishonored thing to do as the general), did absolutely nothing to sway Zuko from his view of the Fire Nation during the 3 year banishment, failed to keep him in check against his niece, and only started a comeback with the white Lotus when Ba Sing Se was already down and the Earth Kingdom was under attack. Through thet perspective Iroh is much more passive, incompetent, and emotionally stunted than his brother, while being less passionate and persistent.

Ozai might not be a good person due to his beliefs and actions, but Iroh isn't a good person due to his lack of commitment to his own and inaction - conivence and enabling.

I promise I wasnt trying to bring negativity to your post. I was careless and thinking of a very specific person who mischaracterized and villainized Kaito, and I was trying to consider why people would paint Kaito as a violent person. I was too quick to assumptions there. I admit I am still figuring out Kokichi's character, as he was pretty complex and confused me throughout the game. I agree that bc they were in a killing game their actions werent the same as theyd be in a normal setting, as they are a bunch of scared kids in a dangerous situation. And I feel you on being reminded of someone in specific. I reacted the way I did because one time I asked my followers for OumaSai positivity and some jerk decided to give me Kaito Hate. So really no big deal, it's all water under the bridge.

(But yeah I love the entire cast of V3 with my whole heart, so I love Kaito and Kokichi a lot. By far my favorites of the cast, ngl!)

I love how each of the three "arcs" in your video ends in a sea of red to indicate the violence and blood that they all ended with (marked Jonathan marking Dracula, Arthur staking Lucy, Dracula and Quincey dying bleeding at the same time) but the ending one is a hopeful red sunset.

Oooo thats such a cool way to analyse it! I'd only thought about the 3 stakings/ shovel bashing (Dracula, Lucy, 3 Weird Sisters, Dracula again) but your interpretation puts them in such a nice new light :D That the despairing flash of red throughout that only ever appears in vampiric eyes, fire and blood can turn hopeful is a way cooler thing than what I thought of initially hhh... plus it aligns with how the novel has the sunset's "rosy light" illuminate Mina's unmarked forehead as a bittersweet moment of triumph. Thanks for this :D
