I haven't finished a drawing in months (• ▽ •;)
Anyways- I got really bored during class today and decided to draw my Minecraft skin (which was based on Aubrey from OMORI) back when I first played Minecraft. I changed her design so as to resemble myself kinda?? The yellow eyes are meant to be a reference to the Life Series (although I don't think it comes across that way 😭) and the little flying halo (?) is meant to represent a Watcher. I was gonna add a Scarlet Pearl reference in there, but I'm soooooo tired (〒﹏〒)

Daomu Biji Watcher’s Guide, May 2024
A few new entries have been popping up lately, and I’m always hopeful new fans will stumble into the pits and never leave so I thought I’d paste up a rough map.
(Obviously the best watching order, like the best reading order of Discworld or the Aubrey-Maturin books, is ‘whatever first comes to your hand’ but for the people who don’t like that…)
tl;dr:
Daomu Biji is a series about tomb raiding. Think Indiana Jones or Lara Croft but much, much longer. The protagonist Wu Xie is deeply in love with BFF1 Zhang Qiling, a hundred-year-old cryptid, and BFF2 Wang Pangzi, who was stolen in a raid from another book series. It’s comic, tragic, horrific, zany, prone to musings on life, love, desire, attachment, and has many, many piss jokes. (‘Journey to the West but modern’ is maybe the other comparison I’d make.)
Notes:
– This guide is not talking about “quality”. All of the adaptations have their own strengths and weaknesses and tone can vary a great deal, which is to say, if one of them doesn’t suit you it’s likely something else will.
– Wacky endings, and plot threads that disappear unfinished and get picked up a long time later, are as inherent to the franchise as the piss jokes.
– It’s common for the dramas to introduce characters and subplots a lot earlier than the books do. Sometimes we’ll see a character introduced ‘for the first time’ on multiple occasions and strangely familiar scenes. I’ll try to point out the biggest continuity clashes as I go.
The Soft Entry:
There are a few movies that are entertaining as standalones but will introduce various characters and background. I would recommend:
Escape from the Monstrous Snake + Mystery/Grave of the Abyss – two monster movies featuring Hei Xiazi, a supporting character. He’s a pragmatical mercenary who’s going blind in kind of a weird way, and goofy as hell when he isn’t tiptoeing over a vast abyss of existential dread. So many fun action scenes.
Time Raiders (2015) – so there are some textual clues that late in his career Wu Xie wrote this story as a memory-jogger for an amnesiac friend. The plot is a freewheeling wild ride which doesn’t directly match any book plot but introduces some major characters and how they relate to each other. It’s colourful and fast-moving. Enjoy, enjoy.
Conjuring Curse and Misty Creed are… theoretically set late in the series even if the actors look about twelve. Both work as stand-alone adventures, though Misty Creed is maybe a little deep in the lore. Again, colourful and fast-moving.
The Chronological Order
You could honestly start with most of these – they tend to come with a ‘what has gone before’ at the start or a newbie character that things get explained to. The only one I wouldn’t start with is Heavenly Palace in the Clouds, which is lovely but also the second half of a set and things won’t make sense if you haven’t seen Lost Tomb 2 first.
Lost Tomb 1 – a highly digestible 10-12 episode version of the Seven Star Lu Palace arc, ie. Baby’s First Adventure. Introduces A-Ning, Xie Yuchen, and Huo Xiuxiu early and a couple of og characters for Wu Xie to talk to instead of monologuing to himself. The restaurant scene at the end was raided from a later arc and you’ll see it again in Ultimate Note. A book character, Da Kui, was cut which is a small problem because how he died is a minor plot point discussed in Lost Tomb 2.
Lost Tomb 2 – covers Raging Sea, Hidden Sands (underwater tomb) and Qinling God-Tree (weird bronze tree in the mountains) plus a whole lotta side stories and original content exploring the world and foreshadowing later plots. Mooostly in continuity with Lost Tomb 1 (see Da Kui above) and made as a set with Heavenly Palace in the Clouds – they share resources and a lot of actors, and some threads begun here are finished in Heavenly Palace.
Heavenly Palace in the Clouds – covers the Mt Changbai arc, a journey up a mountain to find a very old, very grand tomb. This was made so close to Lost Tomb 2 that LT2 borrows shots from Heavenly Palace and not the other way around, which is fascinating because it pointedly contradicts the last five episodes of LT2. It also brings forward some plotlines originally from the Tamutuo and Zhang Family Old Pavilion arcs (San-shu’s past in the underwater tomb, and the Huo Family videotapes) dragging some characters on-screen and forcing them to talk about their feelings, which they would clearly rather die than do. Given those plot-tweaks and the early, deliberate continuity clash, I’m tempted to call this a Canon Parallel Universe. Got some interestingly chewy character dynamics and luverly, luverly set design.
Mystic Nine – This is a prequel about Zhang Qishan – Fo-ye – and his peers, but later dramas expect us to know who Fo-ye was so I’m sticking it here. Kinda… picaresque? Lots of action scenes and Republican-era flavour and various factions jostling for power – kinda feels like an old-school wuxia story, only set in the 1930s with all that glorious Republican-era styling. Has some unfortunate cut scenes – the details of how Fo-ye recovered at his family’s house don’t make a lot of sense in the aired version, and there are a couple of missing fights in the penultimate episode. Shrug. Still a lot of fun. Comes with four side movies about supporting characters.
Ultimate Note – Covers the Tamutuo arc (a trip through the jungle) and two-thirds of the Zhang Family Old Pavilion arc (investigating Zhang Qiling’s past is like kicking a hornet’s nest). Very, very flirty and has some zippy-zip action choreography. Politely ignores Lost Tomb 1–Heavenly Palace continuity (Xie Yuchen is, once more, introduced for the first time, now with a romantically coded friendship arc) and brings in a lot of cameos from Mystic Nine and Sand Sea, which it was filmed after. Kinda tiptoes around parts of the book plot, which I suspect would be hard for anyone to film, re: Fo-ye’s actions in the 1960s. Fair warning, this ends on a cliffhanger. This is also where the Xinyue Restaurant scene appears again – two cakes!
Tibetan Sea Flower – If Tibetan Sea Flower ever airs, it will go here.
Sand Sea – Based on the Sand Sea novel. After Tibetan Sea Flower, Wu Xie goes into a bit of a decline and makes that the world’s problem. We the audience, plus Li Cu and Liang Wan, EDIT: a lovely doctor, are pretty much dropped in media res into a number of ancient conspiracies and complicated plots coming to a head in the manner of a boil. It’s weird; it’s messy; it’s mad fun. Like Mystic Nine, has a lot of factions jostling for power and colourful jianghu characters. We will, once more, see the Xinyue Restaurant scene. Also has some side movies.
Time Raiders – The textual hints that suggest Wu Xie wrote this, suggest he wrote it around Sand Sea-era, when his life was a bit complicated. I’m putting it after Sand Sea because I believe it caps a conversation that, ah, doesn’t quite make it into the drama. But notionally this is where it should go. Ah…. at one point, someone tells a story about an ancient ruler, King Mu of Zhou, who sought immortality from the Queen of the West in Tamutuo. The longer book conversation suggests that a) King Mu of Zhou engineered a “trap” for someone like Wu Xie to fall into in the future, and b) that Iron Mask Scholar, a villain from Lost Tomb 1, was an alias that King Mu of Zhou used in the Warring States Era. Which makes some of Iron Mask Scholar’s appearances in Time Raiders… interesting.
Reunion: Sound of Providence – sometimes known as Reboot. Having peaked in badassery in Sand Sea, Wu Xie has to consider what his life is going to be now, and also, he would like to track down a missing family member. So this was tweaked to make it more accessible to new viewers (so some parts of the back-story are not mentioned or conflated for simplicity) and that mostly works but I did find watching this first and then picking up the earlier dramas a bit of a mindscrew. Zhu Yilong is, however, a powerful draw and the rest of the cast sparkles. Probably best to think of Season 1 as two short seasons jammed together, which is to say, once the Warehouse 11 arc starts there are a number of characters who won’t reappear until Season 2. It’s a fun arc even so. Season 2 ends with a badass action scene and then a big party, which I think is a great way to end a story.
Escape from the Monstrous Snake, Mystery/Grave of the Abyss, Conjuring Curse, Misty Creed – these are all theoretically set around or after Reboot-era, though they can certainly be watched as stand-alones.

Video recommendation
Hello! I recommend you guys watch Mickey Atkins’ (therapist, social worker, fat activist, she/they) video called Diets & Weight Stigma are Making You Mentally Ill | Therapist Talks Fat Liberation on Youtube.
Here’s why I think you will benefit from this video:
The video helps you question the idea of weight in relation to health. It serves to show health as a multifaceted concept, which weight is only a small part of. The video acknowledges that weight shame is interconnected to other forms of discrimination such as racism and ableism.
Atkins has collected a lot of research to disprove current ideas of fatness in relation to unwellness, but also reminds us that even if fatness was unhealthy, fat people should still be treated equally. There’s also a Google Docs linked to the description of the video, where you can find studies on the topic and educate yourself further.
Topics of the video include e.g:
BMI’s creation, how it was inaccurate from the start, and what it should be used for instead.
Weight cycling and its effects on health.
A brief discussion on eating disorders in relation to e.g weight cycling.
Mentions of how capitalism benefits from weight shame.
Obesity paradox
How ”calories in, calories out” is not accurate in any way.
Discussion of the health at every size - approach.
One reoccurent theme of the video is to be critical of research and the medical community when it comes to fat bodies, because there is a lot of bias in the medical community. There is a brief talk on the video about how some research on fat bodies has been sponsored by Weight Watchers or the diet industry.
All in all, I think the video is an informative watch even if you have read a lot of books on the topic already (such as Unshrinking by Kate Manne, What We Don’t Talk About When We Talk About Fat by Aubrey Gordon, Body of Truth by Harriet Brown, etc.). There is some information that was brand new to me, and regardless, it’s always good to see other fat people fighting against fatphobia. Especially when they are mental health professionals.
Anyway, have a lovely day all!

So... Life series winners as Omori characters anyone? Individual ref sheets and more info under the cut :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay SO, for starters I will just say that I am biased towards Scott Smajor and that is why I made him the main character. However, I do believe that in the end he does kind of make the most sense for Sunny considering that everyone else fits better as the other characters imo. Also I used tints of blue instead of black and white bc drawing Scott in black and white just simply feels incorrect.
Anyway, Scar and Pearl are just 100% Hero and Aubrey respectively. A lot of Hero's character revolves around his charming personality, which he uses in headspace to get people to do him favors. I feel like this matches up with Scar's "too charismatic for his own good" schtick that usually happens in the life series.
Aubrey reacts to a negative experience where she was abandoned by IMMEDIATELY lashing out at everyone and becoming a social outcast, hanging out with delinquents. I don't think it's rocket science to see that Pearl, who reacted to negative experiences where she was abandoned by going crazy and lashing out at everyone, matches her character really well.
Going from there, Scott as Sunny makes sense because of his abandonment of Pearl in double life mirroring Sunny's retreat from Aubrey and his friends in how the latter reacted.
Then Grian as Mari because 1) Desert Duo(not necessarily romantic, just in how they are inextricably linked), and 2) He was the first winner and with Watcher stuff I feel like his character is best suited to Mari's role in headspace.
That left Cleo and Martyn as Kel and Basil. These two were the ones I debated the longest, because I feel like they both suit both roles. I went with Cleo as Kel because she's the one who stuck with Scott throughout every life series, like how Kel never gave up on knocking on Sunny's door.
Martyn and Scott were of course the mean gills, and Martyn won through attacking Scott despite all they'd been through together. Basil experienced the trauma with Sunny but still ended up attacking him in his fear. Plus with listener lore I feel like Martyn being the only other person to know the truth makes sense.
Also, whether you look at it in the celestial bodies interpretation(Grian Sun, Scott Stars, Pearl Moon, Martyn Mars, Scar Earth, Cleo Pluto) or tarot cards interpretation(Grian Sun, Scott Stars, Pearl Moon, Martyn Tower, Scar World, Cleo Fool), the omori characters also match up to those.
Sorry that was a lot of explanation for why I linked the specific characters I did. Onto the flowers! Scott as a poppy actually makes a lot of sense even w/out flower husbands, as it's a flower that symbolizes sleep, due to its use in sleeping gas, as well as death, which both match up with how Sunny acted in game.
Pearl is a Datura becuase of its ties to the moon(Moonflowers) as well as its other name(Devil's Trumpet) referencing her Double life character. It is also a very spiritual flower for many cultures, which ties into Aubrey and how she attends church.
Cleo being a succulent feels self explanatory, much like Kel's cactus in game they are easy to take care of and grow under many conditions.
Scar is lavender because of its associations with calming and devotion. Hero acts as the group's peace-keeper, and Scar with this role would do the same. It also has some medicinal properties like soothing headaches and having anti-inflammatory effects, which I feel fits well.
Martyn is a water lily because the season he won was the mean gills season, which I wanted to tie in. Their meaning being rebirth(which also matches the poppy) fits the way that Sunny can only face the truth after Basil nearly kills him. They also symbolize enlightenment, which again aligns with how Basil/Martyn is the only character to know the truth other than Sunny himself.
Grian is the red zinnia because firstly, I wanted him to have a red flower, and secondly its symbolism matches pretty well. Familial love, of course, represents how Mari(Grian in this case) was not only Sunny's big sister, but also acted as a sisterly figure to the other kids. While they are tough flowers, they also symbolize remembrance, pointing towards the death of Mari/Grian. I probably could've kept everyone except Scott and Martyn's flowers the same, but I actually had a lot of fun looking into flower meanings and stuff(sorry if it's not al 100% accurate).
I was honestly surprised with how many parallels I was actually able to find here. This really started as a silly thing I played with in my head because I enjoy both of these medias, but the more I thought about it, the more I went "huh, that actually does make sense", so now here we are.
@easily-distracted-by-fandom , I hope you enjoy the ramble. I also hope that I find more people who know what the heck I'm talking about lmao
Edited in an attempt to make this easier to read instead of big blocks of text lmao

Hiii sorry if this is strange I just wanted to say thank you for the incredibly kind words on your reblog of my Omori/life series post <33 It genuinely made my day
OH YEAH OFC!!!! i loved it so genuinely much & i would boost it more if i could, i read through the flower explanations earlier and oh my god?? oh MY GOD???!? the thought you put into each of those??? what??? i don’t know when you added line breaks but it helped a lot & i really liked reading it but like.
everything about the au is so creative and well thought-out!! im soo so crazy about aubrey as pearl, the way they’re both so nice but turn their anger external?!?!! i’m sooo excited to see what the equivalent of the hooligans (? is that their name?) for pearl is because AUGH OUGH,,
and i LOVE cleo as kel, (double life here) because she’s the person who didn’t give up on scott, she swore to stick by his side no matter what AND i love the zombie spots being mirrored as patches of a loss of melanin,,,
AND i love scar as hero, they have the SAME VIBE, i know they were family in one of the series-s (??) and i like them being related, ESPECIALLY IF CLEO IS DYING HER HAIR, but scar definitely has hero energy, charming but slightly melancholic, he probably hits people with his crutches or rolls them over w/ his wheelchair, and i like how he goes from crutches (supposedly how scott last saw him) to a wheelchair, implying he’s gotten worse, like maybe he was so distraught over grian’s death that he stopped doing exercises/seeing a doctor/ something equivalent to that & made him physically AND mentally effected,
and scott ohhh my god scott. i’m a scott watcher primarily so i’m rlly happy he plays a big role, the switchout of scott + smajor as sunny + omori is GENUIS, and stronger than he appears aughh,,,, sunny and scott have so so many parallels, need i mention that scott dies and wakes up in a better afterlife twice and what is white space/dream world (forgot the name) except a better reality…. i love him being in monotone blue, i love the ends of his hair being blue (ie it grew out) and i LOVE that you mentioned that he would act like nothing changed because he WOULD do that, because if he doesn’t pretend everything’s the same he’d breakdown on the spot, smiles and waves off everyone’s concerns and AUGHHH
i’m sorry if this is too long to read cause i did exactly what i said was hard for ME to read, but i love your au sooo so much and you got the artsyle exactly and i’m planning on drawing fanart later teehee

Billy ends the call with the deputy at the station. He’s in absolute shock (poor choice of words, watcher) after finding out what happened to Aubrey. Even though he didn’t have those feelings for her anymore, at one point Billy imagined his future with her… Finding out she’s now gone has rattled him…

Flex Legacy Gen 5: A New Direction
Serena aged into a teen and had two makeovers. The second makeover won after she had her face smoothing treatment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leo failed his one and only class and ended up on probation, so he decided to use his reward points for easier promotions, dropped out of college and joined the social media career.
Update family portrait and Leo and Sullivan got their adult makeovers

Tumblr media
Serena and JJ went out on a date at the Plumbite Pier. It went well. So well, the hearts floated out before they go inside.
Tumblr media
Leo dislikes playing video games but it’s necessary for his job. Maybe he should have gone into PR instead.

Serena met her boyfriend’s twin brother Hadrian and it wasn’t the best meeting, but she thought he was very attractive

I will not start posting for round one for at least another couple of days - largely because I... have to play it first 🫠 For this round the skill building component will come into play, which will not be the main way but another way contestants can earn points - and I'll roll the dice just to spice things up.
And I'm not simply being polite when I say that I enjoyed every single one of your sims. Thank you so much for entrusting me with them and contributing to such a great cast of pixels. Also if you have any feedback or concerns, I'm opening to hearing them 🤗

For over 50 roughly-weekly episodes now, the best freelance journalist on the subject of the "weight loss industry" has been partnered with the best freelance journalist on the subject of shitty scientific methodology and I wish you'd listened to all of their episodes before I recommend this one, because I'm going to have a hard time convincingly explaining just how horrifying it is that for the first time since 2007, the American Academy of Pediatrics has updated their guidelines for what doctors should tell parents who are concerned about their children's weight.
If you had listened to all 55 episodes (so far, including this one, not including Patreon bonus episodes) then the following facts would no longer be controversial for you, because wow does Aubrey Gordon bring the reporting and wow oh wow does Michael Hobbes bring the science, footnotes, methodology reviews, and all.
The evidence that there even is an "obesity epidemic" is startlingly thin, because it turns out that the datasets that we get our historical weight estimates from are tiny and weirdly selective.
It is probably not a coincidence that the moral panic about the so-called "obesity epidemic" began the same year that Weight Watchers was founded, also not coincidentally the same year that the FDA approved the first two "weight loss drugs," both of which were disasters. Nor that virtually all weight-loss "science" is funded by the for-profit weight-loss industry.
Every study purporting to explain why we are putting on weight (assuming we are) has failed replication. It is not simply "calories in, calories out." We are not eating that differently from people in the 1950s, decades before the obesity epidemic. We are not getting perceptibly less exercise.
There are many statistical studies (with astonishingly poorly chosen datasets) showing (surprisingly weak) correlations betwen obesity and ill health, but virtually none of them are designed to even try to determine the direction of causality. For example, it is at least as likely that diabetes causes weight gain as that weight gain causes diabetes.
None of the studies to date have even tried to tease out health effects "caused by weight gain" from "caused by fat shaming and weight discrimination," because we don't even know how to do that.
And most importantly, almost no weight loss studies show their three-year success rate data; when that data has been sought out, all but two have a failure rate in excess of 95%, and the average weight loss per attempt at the three-year mark is a gain of 10 pounds. The other two methods have a success rate of almost 1/3rd, and even for those 1/3rd, an appalling list of high-probability complications.
The one thing that has entirely reliably been proved to cause weight gain is attempting to lose weight.
The American Academy of Pediatricians is recommending that all children with a BMI of 27 or more be offered:
A very expensive six-month "whole health" intervention that has a 1 in 3 success rate, requires the whole family to attend every multi-hour weekly session, and is not covered by any known insurance. And the whole medical field has enough capacity to treat about 350 kids a year. If that is not available to the parents (and it won't be) ...
Children age 8 or above may be prescribed fenteramine, metformin, or semaglutide, all of which have about a 5% success rate, none of which have been adequately tested for long-term safety in children, all of which will have to be taken for a lifetime, all of which are known to cause major rebound weight gain if or when the patient goes off of the drug, and ...
Children age 12 or over may be referred for stomach-reduction surgery. Which does have about a 1 in 3 success rate, but with insanely high complication rate. Even patients who experience weight reduction through stomach reduction have about a 70% regret rate for two reasons: it creates a lifetime of serious health complications like inability to absorb vitamins from your food and extreme vulnerability to alcohol poisoning, and, worse, the weight loss is actually, on average, pretty minimal. It will turn your maybe-sick fat kid into an even sicker slightly-less-fat kid.
The AAP's own introduction to their guidelines admit that they are not seriously addressing the social determinants of health nor any other hypothesis for why your kid might be gaining weight. They also say quite bluntly that they are not even going to address the question of whether losing weight (in the unlikely event it works) will make your kid any healthier.
If these guidelines are followed, the results are going to be catastrophic.

When her friends left later that evening, Matilda decided to visit Don't grave. She needed some alone time with her love. Don had recently told her that his connection to the Sim World was fading and soon his spirit was cross over, she knew it pained him greatly, but he told her just to let him go.
Matilda had given it a lot of thought, they had had such a short amount of time together, she couldn't let him go, not now. She needed her husband and Aubrey needed her Father, their daughter was at such a pivotal point in her life.
She knelt in front of his grave, mourning her husband whilst pleading for the Watcher to strengthen his connection to the Sim World. To her.

Cas was still unsure of which child he was going to leave the estate to. Luis had made it very clear he didn't want the responsibility. Alex seemed like the next logical choice but he was still a boy. Elvira and Clara were responsible, smart and level headed. Though, Elvira was itching to leave and start her life as a nurse. Clara would be a good choice but she really wanted to marry and start a family, would her husband be willing to move here? Maggie was still a baby. Cas worried because he and Aubrey were getting up in age, granted they were both in good health, thank the watcher.
Tumblr media
Cas sat down with Aubrey to get her opinion. Who should the estate go to? Aubrey was unsure herself. All of the kids had their strengths and weaknesses. Hopefully the decision could wait until Alex was a bit older.

Aubrey reminded Cas that she also had the matter of her inheritance. The way she had her will set up currently, her house in downtown Brindelton and most of her inheritance from her parents would go to Elvira. She always figured Luis or Alex would get the Varda estate, and Clara would marry. Elvira was focused on other things, Aubrey chucked, she wasn't sure Elvira knew what a boy was. The house has been empty since Cas' Aunt Nienna passed away but she was having some renovations done so it would be ready once it was time. Then there was Maggie, they hoped she would at least make it to adulthood before they passed.
