Washington State -- located in Pullman, Washington, sporting a population of 32,000 -- is thought to be one of the most difficult places to win in the Power 5.
But Ethridge, a 1986 champion as a player at Texas as well as a 1988 Olympian with Team USA, has the Cougars looking as relevant as ever in a deep Pac-12, guiding them to three consecutive NCAA tournament berths.
Building success in a place with no tradition of it, in a conference that will have six other representatives in the NCAA tournament, is no small feat. The Pac-12 has sent six different schools to the past 10 Final Fours, the most of any conference in that span.

The topic I decided to talk about is where I want to be after I graduate. I want to be a head athletic director for a school and help run sporting events for a major divison 1 school.  This has been my dream since the beginning of my senior year in under grad when I got the job working as operation staff for Rider University and quickly became a major and was able to do the book work and work directly under the athletic directors.  Within  this year though I have high concerns about everything happening because of the covid 19 and how many colleges are starting to cancel sports and still making it where no fans are allowed in the games which is a huge part of college sports. With covid 19 coming it is a lot to deal with for the school and they are thinking about possibly cutting down a lot of sports programs in order to make some money back. Also some of the highest paid employees have to take a pay cut in order for the schools to survive.  According to Theo Lawson “At Washington State, Director of Athletics Pat Chun has not publicly addressed the possibility of cutting individual programs, and it’s too early to know if that would be part of the school’s blueprint. The Cougars, it’s worth noting, already sponsor two fewer sports than Cincinnati, which doesn’t offer women’s rowing as WSU does, but has men’s swimming and diving, men’s soccer and women’s lacrosse. Still, cost containment strategies have been rolled out at WSU – Chun, President Kirk Schulz, football coach Nick Rolovich and men’s basketball coach Kyle Smith all agreed to temporary 5% pay cuts – and the department is working through various contingency plans in case the football season is altered.” (Lawson 2020).  Athletic directors have big decisions year round and have to make sure that the sporting events run smoothly all the times.  Some of the conferences in college football are trying to make it work for the upcoming season so they can still have one. According to  Ross Dellenger “Three weeks ago, SEC athletic directors met in Birmingham in an in-person meeting that produced several potential contingency plans for a 2020 season, including conference-only schedules of 8–10 games and schedules that includes eight conference games plus one or two non-conference games. The Big Ten and Pac-12 have already announced their plans for conference-only schedule” ( Dellenger 2020).  With this in mind you have a lot of less travel for the teams to be honest what they should do is follow the likes of the NBA and the NHL. For the first ten weeks have a bubble and go somewhere to meet with the other teams because MLB teams traveled a lot every weekend and there are many teams that have players or coaches have the virus now.   Another important job for the athletic director is compliance with the rules and making sure that the  players are all academically eligible to play the games. NCAA has different rules based on conferences and as well as divisions in the school.  Many athletic directors hire someone called the athletic academic advisor to make sure the students are on track in order to graduate and continue to be eligible to play their games and remain on scholarships if they have any for the school. According to athletic scholarships “ For NCAA Divisions 1 and 2, the lowest you can possibly score is a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. If you have a 2.0 GPA you must score a combined 1010 on the critical reading and math sections of the SAT. You can take the ACT exam instead of the SAT if you prefer. With a 2.0 GPA you must score a combined total of 86 points on the four sections of the ACT, English, math, science, and reading. The NCAA Eligibility Center doesn’t use the writing portion of either test when determining eligibility. Individual colleges, however, usually look at all sections during the admissions process The NAIA and NCAA Division 3 levels are different. In the NAIA, an athlete must fulfill 2 out of 3 requirements to be eligible. They must either graduate in the top half of their class, have at least a 2.0 GPA, and/or score an 860 or an 18 on the SAT or Enhanced ACT, respectively”.  I think this is a good gpa for the start of it and to keep this gpa for students is very fair.  Another huge responsibility for athletic directors is to be able to recruit people to come to the school to join your sports teams. To be able to draw top tier talent will make other top tier talent want to come and try to build a winning team. Like for example there has been a lot of big name players recently switching from top schools to historical black colleges because of recent movements and everything happening.  According to Jerry Bembry when he talked to star basketball prospect Makur Maker he said that “ “I need to make the HBCU movement real so that others will follow,” Maker wrote. “I hope I inspire guys like Mikey Williams to join me on this journey. I am committing to Howard U & coach Kenny Blakeney.” (Bembry 2020).  This is very important to a lot of people because this is a top athlete who could have went to almost any division 1 school he wanted and he chose an hbcu college out of them all.   Another big thing to do as an athletic director is making sure all media is happy and have what they need to do their job in order to make sure the whole event runs the way you want it to.  Another big thing is social media affects everything so make sure you have a good social media team. For example “Things get really dicey when it comes to college recruiting, too, as coaches do whatever they can to draw attention to their programs—like Michigan's Jim Harbaugh—and players stir up ways to go viral when revealing their college choice” (Dimengo 2016) With this it was not the athletic director but it is the head coach and is a reflection of the school and the head athletic director so this put Michigan in a bad spotlight.

2017 Butkus League Preview
Reid’s Cornhuskers Preview – Is this finally the year “Red Reign” emerges as Butkus League Champion?
Ladies & Gentlemen! Welcome to the 19th annual Butkus League season! Can you believe Reid’s ‘Huskers have never, ever won the Butkus Bowl Championship Trophy? I can’t believe it either. Now 0-7 in Butkus Bowls, the Huskers are aiming to get the monkey off their backs. Two “Real Championships” are nice (the most cumulative points in a season) but it’s time to bring the infamous Butkus Bowl Championship Trophy home to Mundelein, IL. Since purchasing said trophy back in 2001, I’ve hardly even seen it. It’s a fiction of the mind. Does it truly exist? Has it been updated with engravings of Champions and their MVP’s? Given the lack of effort by fellow Butkus Leaguers, the answer is “doubtful”.
So here we are, the dog days of Summer. That means it’s the Dutch Lion’s favorite time of year. That also means it’s time for you to sit back, relax, and strap it down while reading this amazing team preview of “Reid’s Cornhuskers”!
First, let’s recap the previous themes/slogans used to motivate the ‘Huskers each season!
2003: “Full Throttle” – Starting our 5th season, I decided to start with the team slogan idea. This one was inspired by the “Charlie’s Angels” movie if I remember correctly.
2004: “Can You Stand the Rain?” – Butkus Bowl Runner Up – An overriding theme of rain and water has been a prevailing idea throughout the history of team slogans.
2005: “When It Rains…It Pours” – Butkus Bowl Runner Up – Morton salt
2006: “The Impossible Dream” – One of my favorites, inspired by the 1967 Boston Red Sox run to the World Series. One of the greatest sports slogans of all time!
2007: “Shutting Out the Ghost of Autumns Past” – Butkus Bowl Runner Up – I found this one in a baseball encyclopedia when researching the old 50’s Brooklyn Dodgers
2008: “Forget About Next Year” – Butkus Bowl Runner Up – Another play on the Brooklyn Dodgers
2009: “Like a Bolt of Lightning” – Inspired by Nebraska great Heisman Trophy Winner #20 Johnny Rodgers
2010: “Refuse To Lose: The Scoring Explosion” – 2010 Real Champions – Butkus Bowl Runner Up – Inspired twofold by Trev Alberts’ self coined 1993 Nebraska theme and the 1983 Nebraska’s “Triplets” who had a record setting offensive season.
2011: “Unfinished Business” – As you’d guess, we followed that up with 1994 Nebraska’s Championship slogan
2012: “Echoes of the Mind” – A really funny one based on my tough decision to tank the season on purpose in hopes of rebuilding. Taken from an episode of Magnum, P.I., this direction panned out with the 2014 Real Champions team starring Marcus Mariota and Melvin Gordon.
2013: “Forget About Next Year….This IS Next Year” – Yet another play on the Brooklyn Dodgers
2014: “It’s All Over But The Shouting” – 2014 Real Champions – Butkus Bowl Runner Up – One of my Dad’s favorite sayings when the outcome of a game was decided despite time being left on the clock.
2015: “We Shall Never Surrender” – Inspired by Winston Churchill’s famous speech to the Allies in 1940 which ultimately inspired the conquering of the Nazis.
2016: “Not In This Lifetime” – Inspired by the Guns ‘N Roses 2016 world tour reunion after being apart for two decades.
I thought I had another Magnum, P.I. slogan in there somewhere called “Infinity & Jelly Doughnuts” but I can’t recall exactly what year that was used. I’ll need to research that one.
And now announcing this year’s theme……….
2017: “Red Reign…….I’m Only Happy When It Rains“
That’s right! It’s time for the Cornhuskers to bring out the “Red Rain” (inspired by Peter Gabriel) with a play on words inferring the Big Red will reign as champions once again! Adding into this year’s theme is some Garbage, and I’m not talking about trash. I’m referring to the song “I’m Only Happy When It Rains”. This fantasy team is gonna rain down with points this year. It’s gonna be a torrential downpour of points. Watch out for the tsunami of scoring gentlemen! “Red Reign” is gonna get ya!
Here’s my roster as we head into Saturday’s 19th Annual Butkus League Draft:
Quarterbacks
Jake Browning/Washington – Who would have guessed Browning would go out there as a Sophomore and throw 43 Touchdown passes? Not me……so probably not even his father “Easy Ed” Browning. Jake is cool, like his dad, and like the other side of the pillow. Hence his nickname “Easy Ed Jr.”. What’s on tap for Browning this autumn? Who knows! Maybe a Heisman run. Why does Browning seem to get overlooked? As usual, it’s the East Coast bias, the bias against the West Coast (outside of USC), and his small stature. I’m happy he’s only 6-2. Maybe he’ll bypass the NFL to remain at UW for 2019.
Jacob “Boy Wonder” Eason/Georgia – I’m surprised at the lack of respect that Eason has received. I know he didn’t have an excellent freshman season but how many frosh DO have great statistical years? Not many. Eason threw 16 TD with just 8 INT and led Georgia to an 8-5 record. Sounds a lot like Browning’s freshman season (16-10 ratio leading UW to a 7-6 record). Hmmmm, well that’s interesting. Browning followed that up with a remarkable 43-9 ratio while leading the Huskies to a 12-1 Pac 12 Championship season that ended in the Semifinals with that loss to Alabama. Can we count on Eason improving to 43 TD’s this year? No. But I think we can count on improvement. He’s got the strongest arm in all the land!
Jesse Ertz/Kansas St. – A late trade acquisition from Mike’s Tigers, Ertz steps into the starting role at QB2 for the ‘Huskers. This guy only threw 9 TD passes. That’s the bad news. The good news is he ran for 1,012 yards and 12 rushing scores. Is he a sleeper? I don’t know. He had offseason shoulder surgery. Does that mean he’ll go back to throwing more in ’17, or does it mean he’s not even healthy enough to play? Ertz is a definite question mark. However, I love Senior QB’s, especially for Coach Snyder.
Daniel Jones/Duke – Another unheralded QB with moxie, Jones brings plenty of promise. He’s a possible star under Coach Cutcliffe’s tutelage. Is he good enough? Is his team good enough? Probably. Duke finished 4-8 last year but had 3 consecutive winning seasons prior to ’16. I’m hesitant to have a Duke QB again (I once tried his predecessor Thomas Sirk with mixed results). For now he makes a solid backup QB2.
Running Backs – This is probably the greatest group of RB’s I’ve ever had in 19 years of Butkus League. As our good pal Phil Steele would say, “Given that they are ALL ready to break out, I’ll call this unit……..better.”
Tre Bryant/Nebraska – I’m really excited about this guy, jersey #18. He looks like a solid all around back. Will he split carries with Ozigbo and Mikale Wilbon? Probably, but I like this kid from St. Louis.
Justin “Taco Bell” Crawford/West Virginia – I highly believe in his talent. He’s very, very good and I like his character. He’s got work ethic. He even works at Taco Bell in his free time to provide for his young wife and child. Why did he only score 4 times last year? It’s hard to say. Even Coach Holgorsen wondered. He once said Crawford has just got to finish. Here’s betting he puts up 12-16 scores this year after getting tackled inside the 5 so many times last year.
Ronald “RoJo II” Jones/Southern Cal – RoJo is a superstar! It’s funny how I dropped this guy last year after several sub par performances. I was so so lucky to get him back right before he broke out with some serious high quality performances. Darnold for Heisman? How ’bout RoJo!!!!
Kamryn “Bubba” Pettway/Auburn – As you may know, I love big backs. This Fullback broke out a la historic big backs “Big Two” Jorvorskie Lane from Texas A&M, “The Tyler Rose” Earl Campbell from Texas, and 300 pounder Joe Hall from Kansas St. Anyone remember that guy? He was a bull. That reminds me of another. How ’bout the “Brahma Bull” Alley Broussard from LSU. “Bubba” is more like another Auburn great from long ago, Rudi Johnson. Rudi was lighter on his feet, though Pettway is a big beast that wears down defenses. “Bubba” had a phenomenal year until he blew a tire late in the season on that long breakaway. Anyone see that? It was seriously funny stuff. No one touched him and then he just keeled over like he had been shot running away from a sniper. What in the name of Marion Motley was that? LOL!
Jorvorskie Lane – Texas A&M
Rudi Johnson – Auburn
Joe Hall – Kansas St.
L.J. “Lawrence Phillips” Scott/Michigan St. – He runs like the great LP. Scott is oozing with talent. It’s a shame that he arrived at MSU when they started to go in the crapper. If he gets a lot of carries, I’m convinced he will amaze fans and become a big name going into the 2018 NFL Draft. I’m not sure I’ve seen a guy that runs more like LP since those dominant Huskers days in the 90s. Phillips remains one of the greatest talented RB’s in college history.
L.J. Scott
Lawrence Phillips
Mike Weber “Grill”/Ohio St. – Weber should have gotten more carries last year. You could tell there was just something wrong with the OSU offense. I’m so glad they hired former Indiana coach Kevin Wilson to coordinate OSU in ’17. He does a great job with his running game. I bet he tells J.T. Barrett to stop hogging the ball so much and to hand off more to Weber this Fall. Last year: Barrett 205 carries, Weber 182 carries. This year I expect: Barrett 120 carries, Weber 275 (Saquon Barkley had 272 for comparison’s sake). Barrett for Heisman? How ’bout Weber for Heisman? He averaged 6.0 ypc on those 182. 275 x 6 = 1650 rushing yards. 1650 yards would make me happy. It would also impress Heisman voters. Watch for Mike Weber to “grill” the Butkus League in 2017!
Wide Receivers
Tavares Martin/Washington St. – Like most of my team, I think Martin is getting no love. He should be getting hype as a main cog of Coach Mike Leach’s “Air Raid” system. Last year Martin had 64 catches, 728 yards, and 7 TD as the 3rd option. Now with Gabe Marks and River Cracraft gone, I could see Martin improving quite a bit on those numbers. Luke Falk is still there and he’ll probably put up another 4,000 plus passing yards. Martin should easily eclipse 1,000 yards and 10 scores.
Dante “Gary” Pettis/Washington – Both of my returning wideouts is from the Great Northwest. Ohhhh, beautiful country the Pacific Northwest. Fantastic pass catchers too. Pettis is the son of baseball great Gary Pettis and brother of NFL WR Austin Pettis. Gary’s brother Lynn played baseball too. Lynn was a little strange though, at least in the baseball card as seen below. My buddy Bush and I always wondered about Lynn, all based on one lousy baseball card. I guess Gary was a prankster and grabbed his 16-year-old brother Lynn to pose for this 1985 Topps baseball card. I know what you’re thinking…..maybe we should just tweet Dante and ask about his uncle. Oh well, who cares? Not me. I just enjoy watching Dante catching long balls from Browning and then using that sprinter speed to launch himself to the end zone. I love those Pettis’s!
So that’s where we stand heading into the Draft. Start with those twelve superstars, sprinkle in another 12 guys including a tight end, a kicker, and a dominant defense in the draft and we’re looking at a 2017 Butkus League Championship!………Finally. “Red Reign” is back and better than ever.

Released in 1978, The Eyes of Laura Mars is set in the glimmering yet gritty world of NYC haute couture fashion. Mad Magazine parodied the film as “The Eyes of Lurid Mess” and rightly so, for it definitely has plot issues and some grade-A-Virginia-ham overacting. However, director Irvin Kershner managed to capture a whiff of the cultural crossover as the NYC scene shifted from disco to punk. Often touted as the first American giallo film, The Eyes of Laura Mars tidily ticks off the boxes of the Italian genre: a mix of gorgeous and grimy settings, the gruesome murder of beautiful people, and many misdirections before the killer is finally revealed. Added to the mix is Ms. Virginia Ham herself (Faye Dunaway), a hairy Brad Dourif, and a preternaturally prehistoric Tommy Lee Jones. Dourif is only four years younger than TLJ in real life, but he looks like a bearded baby next to TLJ’s tire-treaded brow. Hell, TLJ is six years younger than Dunaway, but there’s not even a scratch of the cougar in their relationship.
Faye Dunaway of course plays the main character, a superstar high fashion photographer who begins to have disturbing visions of murder. Fun fact: the actual images of famous fashion photogs Rebecca Blake and the so-called “King of Kink” Helmut Newton were used in the film.
Speaking of kink, Barbra Streisand was offered the main role (it helped that she was dating producer Jon Peters at the time) but turned it down because she thought the film’s violent, sexual content was too out-there for her image.
The film opens with a murderous sequence, which turns out to be one of Laura’s nightmares. She awakens in her rather spare and severe bedroom,
Tumblr media
and then wanders out to her living room, aka The Neutral Zone. Beige and brown rule the day, as does that giant rooster sculpture. From kitchen kitsch to highbrow decor? Huh. And oof, so. Much. Carpeting!
Tumblr media
Laura flips through some negatives and tries to put the nightmare behind her. Soon, driver Tommy (Brad Dourif) is ferrying Laura off to the gala reception for a new publication of her photos. It looks like maybe the exterior was shot at one of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s side doors. The interior looks somewhat Studio 54-inspired, though.
Tumblr media
Hiiiiiiyyyyyeeee! I’m just a photograph, don’tcha worry.
Laura meets cute-ish with Detective John Neville (TLJ), as cute as can be when one’s publisher has been horribly murdered with an ice pick. Neville came for the questioning, but he stayed for the hors d’oeuvres, or rather, he looks a bit hungry for a Mars Bar. Laura goes home and rings up her bestie, who happens to be dating Laura’s ex-husband Michael (a very slimy yet somehow sexy Raul Julia). Everyone calms each other down, and soon enough, Laura heads off for a shoot at Columbus Circle. The concept is a bit S&M, models in lingerie and furs fighting in front of the husks of burning cars...
Tumblr media
The concept was inspired by photog Chris von Wangenheim, and so fitting in front of what my father once called “The Devil’s Arsehole” (don’t feel special, C.C., he said that about every Washington D.C. roundabout too). The intersection didn’t get the moniker until 1892, the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s “discovery” of the New World, when a giant statue of the old man was erected. From the invention of the car on, Columbus Circle was considered a hazardous spot for pedestrians. Given the circle’s bad rap for most of the 20th century, it seems quaint to remember that Olmsted intentionally designed the traffic circle as the grand entrance to Central Park in 1857. By 1978, Columbus Circle was “roundly” (oh ho ho) derided as a dangerous thoroughfare. In 1979, architecture critic Paul Goldberger said that the intersection was "a chaotic jumble of streets that can be crossed in about 50 different ways—all of them wrong." A redesign of the circle’s aesthetics and traffic flow began in 1991, and by the Naughty-Aughties, Columbus Circle had even won a few awards for landscape architecture and urban design.
Neville shows up again at Laura’s set at Chelsea Piers. This is my favorite set in the movie, with the fabulous Sterling St. Jacques dancing around and a lot of blown-out color and drama going on.
Tumblr media
It’s also one of our last scenes with poor Lulu and Michelle, alas. I actually quite like both of their characters, so silly and yet so sassy. They have the best outgoing answering machine message, and it made me feel so nostalgic for both answering machines, answering machine messages, and that kind of close relationship you’d have with a roommate. That is the kind of relationship that can only be built after hearing all your messages, and knowing all your secrets, unvarnished and unedited by a brunch re-telling. Sigh.
Laura’s studio is amazing - it’s enormous with tons of old windows, stunning harbor views, and some convenient soft spots that are perfect for sexy times with Neville.
Tumblr media
Donald (René motherfucking Murat Auberjonois) is such a great character. He’s Laura’s long-suffering agent, and although at times walking the stereotypical line, he is quite comfortably un-closeted. Whenever someone tries to throw homophobic shade his way, he shines a light right up their asses. I do not love the character’s decor choices, though - a bit too Italianate for me, although who can resist a red damask wallpaper and this goddamn face? Not me, friends.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Italian classics, Frank Adonis makes an appearance as Sal, Neville’s slightly unhinged partner. I like this shot of him surveying Laura’s apartment with a “mmm, not bad,” expression.
Tumblr media
Frank just shuffled off this mortal coil in late 2018, R.I.P. Weird fact: although he’s the Italian guy you recognize from everything, his Wiki page is in French.
SPOILERS, sort of: Neville goes to see Tommy at his spectacularly depressing apartment, and the visit quickly takes a turn for the worse. Tommy stabs a patrolman while escaping arrest, but the Sal the psycho just opens fire on what appears to be the entire East Village, and Tommy est la morte. Neville rings up Laura to tell her the killer has been caught, and pack your bag, baybeee, they are going away! Laura begins to select some careful neutrals to coordinate with the lady Derringer gifted by Neville, when she is suddenly struck by another vision.
Tumblr media
Poor Michael gets ‘picked in the elevator of Laura’s building, and the killer is en route to her apartment! Laura manages to lock the front door just in time. Neville soon comes crashing through the balcony window, and this is where the ending gets super giallo: as he begins babbling about Tommy’s terrible upbringing, Neville accidentally reveals that it is he, Neville, who is the killer. But it’s not really Neville! No, it’s his other personality that did the killing. That personality is also apparently responsible for how nicely Neville fills out a black turtleneck, as well as for finishing Neville’s dissertation and keeping the bills paid. The real Neville struggles back to the surface; to protect his true love, he basically shoots himself using Laura’s gun (and trigger finger, as she is holding said gun at the time). The final shot is of Laura calling the cops, and her final line? “I’m Laura Mars.” If there is any shred of happy ending to this story, it might be that she has to rip out that fucking bloodstained carpet. Maybe there’s a nice parquet floor under there? I know that hating on carpeting is low-pile fruit, but there is just no way for mere mortals to keep wall-to-wall carpeting from getting disgusting.
Interesting fact: John Carpenter wrote the spec script for this film, but Kershner’s finished product took some hot turns in the rewrite. Carpenter was still credited despite his protests, but luckily the mixed reviews didn’t affect the success of his next project, Halloween. It’s been nice to revisit some giallo, although I think I’m going to go back to the real-deal Italian giallo next month. I might also be leaving this platform, as sad as that makes me. Tumblr has been doing some bullshit flagging of posts that are very LGBTQ-unfriendly, and well, they are also buggy as hell. I had this post written a week ago but the site kept crashing as I was trying to update. At any rate, stay tuned for any updates, or as I likely know all three of you reading this, I’ll let you know if there’s a new site.

Master Cicerone Rich Higgins & Cascade Brewing host a sour beer and cheese pairing event, January 16th.
Press Release
PORTLAND, Ore. … Looking for a last minute gift idea for the turophile (cheese lover) or faithful beer fan in your life? Cascade Brewing, a pioneer in the sour beer renaissance, is holding a sour beer and cheese pairing event on Thursday, Jan. 16 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Cascade Brewing Barrel House at 939 SE Belmont St.
The evening will be hosted by beer expert Rich Higgins, one of only 18 Master Cicerones in the world and a certified sommelier. Stating that nothing pairs better with delicious farmstead cheeses than oak-aged sour beers, Higgins will showcase the interplay between Cascade’s world class beers and cheeses from Oregon and beyond.
“Wine and cheese can be enjoyable together, but often it’s a 1+1=2 pairing,” explained Higgins. “Cheese’s heft, sweetness, salt, and fat are absolutely transcendent with the right beers, and I can’t think of a better partner than Cascade’s Northwest sour ales.”
Tickets cost $36 and include a seminar and reception, four beer and cheese pairings, fruit and bread accoutrements, plus special, cellared bottle pours during the reception. Additionally, attendees will go home with a Cascade tasting goblet. During the reception, attendees will meet and chat with Higgins and Kevin Martin, Cascade’s Director of Brewery Operations, while enjoying aged selections from Cascade’s cellar. Tickets are available at http://richhiggins.com/events-classes/cascade.
The Pairing Menu Cambozola, a soft ripened Bleu-Brie from Germany, paired with Manhattan NW, a blend of sour quad and blond ales aged in bourbon and wine barrels for up to 24 months with sour pie cherries and apricot noyaux.
The Smokin’ Goat, a semi-soft goat cheese from the Canary Islands, paired with Framblanc, a blend of sour blond ales aged for up to 14 months in oak wine barrels with more than 3,500 pounds of white raspberries.
Briar Rose Honnalee, a semi-soft washed rind organic cow cheese from Oregon, paired with Kriek, a blend of sour red ales aged in oak wine barrels for up to 17 months with Bing and sour pie cherries.
Cougar Gold, an aged white cheddar from Washington, paired with Sang du Chêne, a showcase of sour strong blond and triple ales aged in three large format oak casks: foudres, puncheons and hogsheads.
Higgins is a passionate and enthusiastic teacher of all things fermentation and flavor. In addition to his Cicerone and sommelier titles, he is a former San Francisco brewmaster, a consultant to restaurants and breweries, and a world traveler. To become a Master Cicerone, he passed the beer world’s hardest test in 2010.
About Rich Higgins Rich Higgins is all things beer: brewmaster, beer travel operator, author, public speaker, and a consultant to breweries and restaurants. He is one of 18 Master Cicerones in the world, and additionally is a Certified Sommelier. He runs Beer Immersions educational beer tours of Belgium and Germany. Educational offerings include his organized approach to blind beer tasting, the Deductive Beer Tasting Method, as well as his online Video Prep Course for the Certified Cicerone Exam.
