8. Where did you find movie recommandations?

I'm sorry this is probably not the answer you wanted but by talking with friends and colleagues. Lately I've been told I should watch Teen Beach Movie (by Jeffrey Hornaday) and Golden Eighties (by Chantal Akerman). I love that these are both how people see me.

Also my boyfriend is a huge movie buff so almost every evening he tells me what he's going to watch and I can decide if I'm interested to watch with him or not. We love discovering classic and/or asian movies together !

13. What was your favorite non-Hollywood movie you saw ?

I guess it's a tie between Jawan (by Atlee) and Twilight of the Warriors : Walled In (by Soy Cheang) !

Labyrinth, 1986 (loved it)

Pather Panchali, 1955 (was a bit long but interesting, need to watch the rest of the serie)

Chungking Express, 1994 (meh, it's one of my best friend's favourite movie she still hates me for not liking it)

The Prestige, 2006 (watching it was ok, and then the more I thought about it and about Nolan the more I hated them both)

Old Boy, 2003 (great, I wish plot twists weren't so easy to predict to me)

Sherlock Jr., 1924 (love me some Buster Keaton)

Burlesque, 2010 (I understand, if you're 12. But my friend who showed me this was wrong : they are not the most beautiful pretty princesses ever. Bonus points for Cher, Stanley Tucci and Alan Cumming.)

Bay of Angels, 1963 (so close, but the rythm is off. Sorry Jacques and Michel, I promise I do not love you less for this)

Le Sabotier du Val de Loire, 1956 (one of Demy's first ever movie. Made me emotional. It's simple and beautiful just like I like it.)

Model Shop, 1969 (yes I went and watched half Demy's filmography this year. I think I didn't like the american setting in that one. It felt wrong, sorry)

The Red Shoes, 1948 (love love love give me more surreal fairy tales movie like this or Donkey Skin or Beauty and the Beast)

The Old Gun, 1975 (probably one of my favourite movies from this year. So beautiful, so emotional. The people asks for Philippe Noiret tricking nazis Home Alone style in his castle in southern France to finally use a flamethrower on them, and the people shall receive)

The Band Wagon, 1953 (sadly don't have much memories from it. I do like Fred Astaire but all of his movies get mixed up in my brain)

Meet Me in St Louis, 1944 (CLANG CLANG CLANG WENT THE TROLLEYYYYYY)

Marius, 1931 (just feels like home, I love Marcel Pagnol so much)

Red Sun, 1971 (how can you get the most perfect casting and the most amazing plot and end up with such a boring movie is beyond me)

Scarface, 1983 (I realise it is well made and well played, I also was bored out of my mind during the entire movie. If I hear the boys quote the French translation to each others one more time, I will lose it. Oyé sapapaya included.)

Alien, 1979 (great ! I wish I would have liked it more, but I still had a really good time)

Cinderella, 1997 (fairy godmother Whitney Houston was one of the hightlights of my year. Also Paolo Montalbán. Sorry I'm just a girl.)

Charade, 1963 (cute ! Bit long, very funny, Audrey Hepburn my love)

(500) Days of Summer, 2009 (I understand why people might love it. It's great, didn't touch me as much though)

Picoreview: Mrs Harris Goes to Paris – a delight!

I very much wanted to see this in the theatre and for whatever reason failed to, so when I had the TV to myself and discovered it on Netflix a couple nights ago, for once in my life I didn’t spend 45 minutes trying to decide what to watch and finally decide to watch nothing, but just watched it. :)

It really is a delight. Charming, sweet, soft, occasionally heartbreaking, and funny. The lead, Lesley Manville, is one of those actors I feel like I’ve always been aware of even though looking at her filmography doesn’t seem to show much that I’ve actually seen. She’s absolutely lovely in the role, and I completely accepted her as a heartbroken widow who falls in love with a Dior gown. She was just lovely.

They did some WONDERFUL stuff with the lighting that just absolutely thrilled me, and the dresses were, of course, beautiful to the point that more than once I, who am familiar with 1950s Dior because look, we all are, on a subconscious level if nothing else, was gasping out loud as the models displayed them. They were so, so beautiful. All of the costuming in the film was, as you might imagine, excellent, and it’s worth watching for that alone. (Apparently all of Manville’s clothes were vintage except her coat and her Dior, which they made. That’s pretty cool.)

The supporting cast is all both well-written and well-cast; even the small roles (including what amount to a trio of drunken fairy godfathers) have a lot of personality and presence to them. And having watched this now instead of when it came out meant there were several people in it that I went “Oh hey look it’s them!” instead of “um, who is that?” Most particularly Alba Baptista (Warrior Nun and even more recently, Chris Evans’ wife, the lucky woman), who plays the lead Dior model while channeling a lot of Audrey Hepburn, and Anna Chancellor (probably best known as Henrietta “Duckface” from Four Weddings & a Funeral, but who I JUST saw in My Lady Jane so she was newly re-familiar to me), and also the vaguely familiar handsome guy interested in Alba Baptista’s character, who turned out to be Julia Roberts’ boyfriend in Ticket to Paradise. :) So it was a bit of spot-the-actor, but not in a distracting way.

Jason Isaacs also plays a slightly roguish Irishman with a convincing enough accent that I actually looked him up to make sure he wasn’t Irish. He’s not. I didn’t think he was. But it was a good accent!

I’m very happy to have finally seen it, and could see this one going on my comfort rewatch list, which is quite an achievement for any film. :)

Anna likes to use Phillip's credit card. Not for the Gucci store, but to go to the Asian supermarket/Costco to buy groceries and stuff in bulk. He always insists on carrying the bags of rice in spite of his knee lmao. (Of course this doesn't mean she's above dragging him to Sephora)

Phillip likes old movies. They watched Roman Holiday and he swears that a young Audrey Hepburn resembled his mom when she was younger.

Phillip always complains about how he wished he would've recruited her before Laswell did when she was discharged for not acknowledging Farah Karim's ULF as a terrorist group, (thank God the CIA cleared her of that.) And how she would've thrived in the Shadow Company at the time. Anna argues she probably wouldn't be with him if she was working directly under him that way.

The two of them like to nap together. Alot. When they say they "sleep" together, they mean sleeping together. He's gotten so used to having her just lying ontop of him he struggles to sleep without some weight over him.

When Graves was trying to win her back while she was casually dating Tommy's father, he wrote her literal letters. Handwritten letters that were one way or another "Please take me back". She has them in a box.

Anna genuinely expected Graves to dip as soon as he learned she was pregnant with another man's baby. Him insisting on helping her was part of what convinced her to forgive him, and to eventually join the Shadow Company.

She will STILL annoy him with her random unfiltered questions and thoughts.

"How do you think dinosaurs have sex?"

"Let me finish my coffee before I even consider answering that, Annie."

Anna is amazing at karaoke but only sings when she's drunk. There's a video of her on his lap singing at a karaoke booth with friends where he's just smiling and watching her all smitten.

Anna has tried to explain "not too sweet" as an Asian compliment to Phillip thousands of times. He still doesn't get it.

Anna cannot wrap her mind around the amount of churches needed in one place in the entire state of Texas.

They had a legitimate argument over the Spurs or the Warriors (NBA Teams) being better. Graves was this close to banning blue and gold in the household.

There's an entire folder of photos in Anna's phone dedicated to Phillip's dog being cute. Her favorite is a clueless Graves using the dog as a pillow while he scrolls through his iPad.

They forget about the age gap sometimes. Well, she does. Sometimes he uses her "immaturity" as an excuse to take charge/be right.

Anna has taken Phillip to the Philippines before. She had to convince him not to adopt every street dog/feed every askal he saw on the road. He left a rose on the memorial of her grandmother Isabella.

this one might be a hot take but he does not hate miles. he wants to look out for him and definitely either currently regrets or is going to regret what happened in that chase scene. i genuinely doubt he hates any of the spider-gang hes just very, very worried about the multiverse. in his head thats the only way. he hardly ever sleeps but when he does its like hes dead (at least when its dead quiet, which again, isnt often so he hardly ever gets a good nights sleep). you'd have to use a fucking blowtorch to the face to wake him up.

i also see him as not only having hypersensitive vision but also having elevated senses period. hearing, smell, touch, etc. probably the main reason he sits in the dark with no other noise.

branching off of that he frequently gets migraines of things get to stressful or too loud or if anything is very off about his schedule.

hasnt spoken to gabriel in years. he cant bring himself to reach out and when gabriel does he just doesnt have the energy to try and respond. he has no idea how to, especially now.

this is very specific but he stims a lot with his claws. like extend and retract over and over absentmindedly (mainly because thats what i'd do if i had claws imagine how fun that would be)

he usually bottles up all the emotions that he has, including anger. kind of explains why he lost it in the chase scene in my head because he reached a boiling point. he hates talking to people about his problems.

empanadas are his safe food, also theyre just easy to eat when your mouth is a little funky (i would know i have some fucked up braces theyre great for that 10/10), its mostly just easier on his fangs.

definitely horrible at the whole self are thing. he just forgets, all the time. would forget to breathe if it wasnt involuntary

if you say anything he doesnt particularly like (eg "hey bro are you okay do you wanna talk") he'll just stare at you with his rat eyes like 👁️👁️ until you stopped idk what im saying.

he is a bit touch starved, depending on his mood he'll let people touch him in a friendly (emphasis on friendly. friendly friendly friendly dont take it any other way :/) way.

OH I almost forgot about this one: he hisses. some spiders hiss. so does he. vampire furry energy

he also gets pissed when people call him a vampire so uh... im counting my days oops.

Arguably the most recognizable UNICEF photo of Audrey was captured by John Isaac in Ethiopia. She even based a drawing on it for a charity auction. The drawing is much more somber in comparison.

9. Did any movies make you want to visit a new place?

I usually prefer warm and sunny places, but the Banshees of Inisherin made me want to rent a little house, a little cottage somewhere in the Irish islands and just rest. Read. Look at the sea. Spend time with dogs and donkeys. It'd be nice.

21. Best soundtrack from a movie you saw this year?

So. That's a tricky question. To answer I decided to treat movies and movie musicals separatly.

I technically know nothing about music except for what Julie Andrews had to teach us in The Sound of Music, I do not play any instrument, cannot sing, cannot dance, nothing. But music is and has always been essential to movies I watch. It's the first thing I notice and I'm always shocked when people tell me they simply don't care. Maybe that's why I love musicals so much? Anyway. This year I rewatched West Side Story (both), The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and An American in Paris. Are you asking me to compare Bernstein to Legrand to Gershwin? No, I don't think so. They're all genuises. Crème de la crème. Top of their game.

Now I know how to have fun too. I rewatched Grease, High School Musical 1 and 2, Rocky aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, RRR and The Nightmare Before Christmas and they're all very important albums to me that I listened and listened and listened to non-stop for w e e k s. Also Wicked. That's my latest obsession, I knew about the musical I had seen in on stage back in 2016 in London and had listened to the original Broadway cast album, but ever since the movie came out I cannot stop listening to its album and I k n o w Cynthia Erivo's No Good Deed next year will just be the death of me.

For "normal" movies, still not an easy question, for you see I also rewatched the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Isn't that like one of the best movie soundtrack ever written in the history of mankind? Just asking. Also rewatched Pride and Prejudice (2005) wich has, for some reasons, one of my favourite soundtrack ever. I always go back to it when I need to unwind, to read, to rest, to dream (much like The King and the Mockingbird soundtrack, and Little Miss Sunshine's too. But I haven't rewatched those this year). I also rewatched How to Train Your Dragon 2, and the first movie has an other one of my favourite soundtracks of all time.

To talk about my latest discovery I watched Herzog's Nosferatu the Vampyre for the first time just a few days ago, and the music simply, properly hypnotized me. Knocked me out. It was amazing. Felt just as lost as poor Jonathan Harker, perfect way to watch that movie.

22. Most interesting things you learned from the movies you saw this year?

I learned about the Kowloon walled city in Twilight of the Warriors, which doesn't exist anymore but is fascinating to read about.

I also learned about the hijra in India, in Monkey Man. I knew different populations around the planet could see gender in different ways, but it's cool to learn how they're called and what they look like. Monkey Man had all the flaws you can find in first movies, which it is, but was also super fun and filled with good ideas.

27. Best meal seen on-screen?

Not many great meals in movies I (re)watched this year sadly? I'd say the first meals Other Mother cook for Coraline. That's what made me the hungrier.

I notice plain boiled potatoes come back several times in my list. What's up with that?

28. Most memorable costumes you saw on-screen?

Sorry to repeat myself but doesn't the Lord of the Rings trilogy has some of the best costumes ever made in the history of cinema?

There, now that this is out of the way :

I (re)watched several Audrey Hepburn movies (Charade, Sabrina and Funny Face) this year and her work with Givenchy always astonishes me. She is SO pretty. The looks are just so perfect. It's not her best look but my first thought is always the "take the picture take the picture!" scene in Funny Face. Maybe one of my favourite scene in cinema, idk why.

I know some people called it hideous special effects, but I absolutly adored Elphaba's final witch look in Wicked. The dress, the hat, the broom, the cape. It's the perfect cliché and it fits so well and makes me feel like a child being told classic witches tales and I loved it. Also I want Glinda's pink roundy flowery dressing gown.

I love the costumes in Poor Things, in Beetlejuice, West Side Story (1961) and in RRR. I would also like to praise some iconic accessories too, like the pearl hairdo Lizzie wears at the ball in Pride and Prejudice or Jack Skellington's bat bowtie. They bring me so much joy.

I am ten goddamn sets behind but I have to catch up because we’re almost back to The Horniest Goddamn Plane In All Of Magic Canon (that’d be New Phyrexia, babes!) and if I don’t cover that in uncomfortable detail, then what was this blog even for? We got some ground to cover, so let’s get going.

CORE SET 2021

Good news! Unlike Core Set 2020, this one isn’t a complete wash!

Meeks giving vampire-fuckers exactly what they want here. Rose-tinted diaphanous silks & equally-diaphanous bats, the delicate damask patterns, the bridal carry, the victim’s languid pose, the collarbones, the blood - but for me, it’s the contrast between the vampire’s self-possessed hauteur and the trickle of blood down her throat that really makes this work.

Liliana, Waker of the Dead (art by Anna Steinbauer)

Liliana almost always makes the list, of course, but usually she gets here through raw displays of power and dominance. Steinbauer’s taken a different tack here, though, constructing this pastoral idyll centered around Liliana as a Gothic heroine. Is that sharp-edged pensiveness hesitation? Regret? Whatever it is, it’s a vulnerability we don’t usually get to see with her. This is easily, easily my favorite Liliana. It’s also about forty percent more Audrey Hepburn than typical, which. Yeah, that works for me.

KALDHEIM

man i just really do not care for the art direction in Kaldheim if I’m being honest. “viking plane” has a lot of potential and most of the art here is well-executed i just can’t help but feeling like the briefs the artists were given were kind of half-assed. like they have gods of DEATH and FEAR and they just look like whole foods hipsters. still, though! couple of hot valkyries.

You really have to appreciate when someone just fully commits to a vibe. She could have stopped with the corpse paint and the black and gold everything but she went that extra mile for the blue flame wings and the smoldering pillar of the damned.

Yeahhhhh, I knew I could count on Steinbauer to deliver something ineffably sapphic. Hot, broody warrior angel fits the bill. Thank you for your service as always, ma’am.

HONORABLE MENTION: Jorn, God of Winter (art by Magali Villeneuve)

I gotta give credit where credit is due: in one of the drier sets in a very neutered Magic the Gathering era, Villeneuve has made a god who one million percent fucks. This rules.

STRIXHAVEN: SCHOOL OF MAGES

You know, I figured there’d be more candidates at wizard college, if for no other reason than there’d be more girls with glasses - but no, not even Goth Entomologist House OR Bitchy Poet Vampire House produced a single hit between the two of them. Here’s what we do get:

Liliana Vess: MILF professor version. I don’t need to say more than this, the scenario writes itself. Still, I do wanna pause and note the shoulder battlements. This is a woman who knows the value of fortifying gun emplacements, by which, yes, I do mean her tits.

Dragonsguard Elite (art by David Rapoza)

Oh yeah this is genuinely horny. Big owl glasses, perfect facial features, picturesque windblown hair, a dramatic display of power, those curves. I’ve really missed art that manages to be self-indulgent but not boring. More of this!

ADVENTURES IN THE FORGOTTEN REALMS

I have a great deal of resentment about the D&D crossover sets in terms of flavor. You can’t make Lolth, Zariel, and Mordenkainen planeswalkers in Magic canon and then be like oh well but no not really it’s not like they can go to Ravnica or something like that. Motherfucker then they’re not planeswalkers! You didn’t even bother to make Lolth hot! That was a fucking slam dunk! Three different D&D sets and you didn’t even include a single marilith!

I could keep going, at great length, but instead I’m choosing to be responsible and talk about the hot girls.

I’m going to confess to spending an unspecified-but-lesbian amount of time watching Simone Giertz build weird shit on youtube. This scratches that same primal dyke itch of wanting to watch a clever, funny woman make something with her hands, but with bigger biceps.

Kalain, Reclusive Painter (art by Justine Cruz)

Cruz is almost a complete newcomer to Magic the Gathering here, which is really impressive because Kalain is the clear stand-out of this set. I personally wouldn’t choose to paint in my finest red doublet, but obviously this is a deficiency in my commitment to the Byronic artist Aesthetic. Obviously I don’t glower intensely enough. Obviously I don’t dress enough like a mildly-genderfluid Prussian vampire. Rest assured Kalain will be making none of these rookie mistakes!

I genuinely have so much gender envy about Kalain, holy shit.

OKAY progress made. This was the tail end of the drought. We got two Innistrad sets next, and whatever else you wanna say about those sets, I’m pretty sure we get more hits in even just one of them than we did in the four sets covered here together. Next time we got: girls accessorizing with bones, girls accessorizing with snakes, Hot Crossbow Autumn, woman laughing alone with shovel, dog mom, and so, so many vampires.
