while i’m on the topic of lines that took a hit in the official translation, this is another one that was pointed out to me by a friend because they translate it correctly in the anime, but not in the manga. this is after wapol is talking about how he’s better than everybody else because he’s a king, basically.

what luffy says in response to that here is approximately (in the first text bubble) “it doesn’t matter! if you’re a king, or if you’re a god…” (in the second text bubble) “it doesn’t matter who’s great and who’s not great!”

the mention of ‘or a god’ (神様だろうと/kami-sama darou to) here strikes me as particularly important, because this is the arc that introduces us to the will of D, well before luffy has punched any actual self-proclaimed gods. and i translated 偉い/erai here as ‘great’ but it should be understood in the sense of sort of ‘important/famous/eminent.’
