Flock of seagulls hair pulp fiction
#FLOCK OF SEAGULLS HAIR PULP FICTION TV#
Consider supporting local journalism with a digital subscription to the Caller-Times. Meagan Falcon covers entertainment, things to do and trending news in South Texas. If that inspires you to do music, go and do music. Don't miss out on listening to something just because it's old. Score: I would just say to them, like what my mom used to say to me, be yourself, like what you like and don't let your friends force you to like what they like. You'd think they would be listening to bands from their era, but they aren't and it feels really good that we are making an impact to other generations.Ĭaller-Times: If you had a chance to give some words of wisdom to those young fans that you may see at the Corpus Christi show, what would you say to them? To me, that is like saying the music is still relevant. Some of my favorite moments so far have been seeing parents bringing in their little ones, about 6 or 7 years old, who have been listening to or playing A Flock of Seagulls at home. Score: I think they'll enjoy it. It's just going to be one happy, crazy '80s family. It's funny because new songs that I like really catch me by surprise because I kind of go, "where did that come from?" Like the song "Heathens" from Twenty One Pilots, that was a great song.Ĭaller-Times: You guys will be making a stop in Corpus Christi this upcoming week, but what do you hope audience members will get out of this show? There are even some country songs I quite like. I am more of a fan of songs than artists and bands. Although I'm not a big Madonna fan, she has a couple of songs that just have me go, "wow, the way that is put together is awesome." Score: To tell you the truth, I just started listening to Madonna. While on the road, A Flock of Seagulls lead singer and founder Mike Score gave an exclusive phone interview with the Caller-Times about his inspirations, what inspired the iconic "seagulls" hairdo, and what fans in the Coastal Bend can expect at the live show.Ĭaller-Times: Is there any music that you are listening to right now that has you playing it on loop on tour? That means it will be possible to hear “Wild Wild West,” “Turning Japanese,” “I Ran,” "Send Me an Angel,” "Everybody Have Fun Tonight” and “Living in Oblivion” all in a single show. 20 at Concrete Street Amphitheater on the Lost 80's Live Tour. Say 'what' again.Get ready to grab your favorite neon tights, cropped shirts, and style your hair with the legendary poof that defies gravity, because your favorite '80s bands have officially come together to tour once again.Īnd they're making a stop in Corpus Christi.Ī Flock of Seagulls, Missing Persons, Wang Chung The Band, Boys Don't Cry, Anything Box, The Vapors UK, Trans-X, The Escape Club, Real Life, Farrington + Mann of When in Rome, and Christopher Anton of Information Society will take the stage Tuesday, Aug. They speak English in What?ĭescribe what Marsellus Wallace looks like! "What" ain't no country I've ever heard of. What's the matter? Oh, you were finished! Well, allow me to retort. Please, continue, you were saying something about best intentions. I'm sorry, did I break your concentration? I didn't mean to do that. We got into this thing with the best intentions and I never. Easily move forward or backward to get to the perfect clip.
#FLOCK OF SEAGULLS HAIR PULP FICTION TV#
Find the exact moment in a TV show, movie, or music video you want to share. I just want you to know how sorry we are that things got so fucked up with us and Mr. You know why we're here Yarn is the best search for video clips by quote. And your ass ain't talkin' your way out of this shit. Hairstyle From Pulp Fiction to X-Men, the Flock of Seagulls hair trend was. I got yours, Vincent, right? But I didn't get yours. So what exactly was the Flock of Seagulls haircut, and why was it so popular. I don't remember askin' you a Goddamn thing! You were saying? You, flock of seagulls, you know why we're here? Why don't you tell my man Vincent where you got the shit hid at?

What’s New In 2018: The Cartoons
Separated by network. All premiere dates are estimated until confirmed. Timings are in EST.
NICKELODEON:
- The Adventures of Kid Danger (January 2018): Based on the live-action Henry Danger, while the live-action hit focuses on Henry balancing the challenges of being a teenager with his adventures as a crime fighter, this new full-length animated series centers on his exploits as Kid Danger, as he embarks on brave new missions with Captain Man to battle monsters, aliens and more. The Adventures of Kid Danger and Captain Man is produced by Powerhouse Animation, which also produced the short-form series.
In the new animated series, brand-new areas of the superheroes’ headquarters will be seen by fans for the very first time, including the Man Cave tube system, which propels the crime fighters into adventure; and the Man Cave garage, filled with crime-fighting vehicles and gadgets used on missions. Along with appearances of fan-favorite characters from the live-action show, new friends and foes will also be introduced.
The 10-episode series was created and executive produced by veteran producer Dan Schneider (Henry Danger, Game Shakers, iCarly) and features the original Henry Danger live-action cast reprising their roles. The series is set to premiere in January 2018.
- Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Fall 2018): Nickelodeon will be rebooting its current CG “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” series as a 2D animated series with the title “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, as announced at their upfront in March.
“Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” will follow Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo on all-new adventures as they seek to unlock the mystical secrets of New York City. From the tallest skyscraper to the dankest sewer drain, the Turtles will encounter absurd new mutants and battle bizarre creatures all while enjoying their favorite slice of pizza. Tapping into mystic, ninja powers they never knew existed, the four brothers must learn to work together and navigate the perils of the modern age and hidden realms in order to fulfill their destiny to become a team of heroes.
The new 2D series is co-executive produced by Andy Suriano (character designer for the critically acclaimed Adult Swim series “Samurai Jack”) and Ant Ward (supervising producer, current “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”) at Nickelodeon in Burbank, California. Nickelodeon has ordered 26 episodes of the 2D reboot to air starting in fall 2018.
- Pinky Malinky (Early 2018): Co-created and co-executive produced by Chris Garbutt and Rikke Asbjoern (The Amazing World Of Gumball) and executive produced by Scott Kreamer (Kung Fu Panda: Legends Of Awesomeness), upcoming Nicktoon Pinky Malinky follows the everyday life of Pinky, an infectiously positive hotdog living in a human world who, along with his two best friends, navigates school and life with a unique perspective. Their humorous experiences also will be shared across social media and Nickelodeon’s digital platforms. It will be produced at Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank.
Using the tropes of a mockumentary and reality show format, Pinky and his friends will talk directly to the camera and the audience to share their absurd and silly take on real life. At times, all children feel like they don’t fit in, and Pinky’s undeniably unique point of view as a literal wiener amongst humans will allow kids to laugh at his familiar struggles and enjoy his unusual perspective on the challenges of being a school-age kid. By always reaching for the stars, Pinky pushes himself further than anyone could imagine and proves that being a “wiener” is only one letter away from being a “winner.”
Pinky Malinky previously was done as a short for Cartoon Network. It is set to premiere in early 2018 with 20 episodes.
- Glitch Techs (2018): Glitch Techs (working title) has been picked-up for 20-episodes set to debut in 2018. Glitch Techs is an CGI-animated adventure-comedy following two newly recruited kids as they battle video game monsters that come to life in the real world. The brand-new series comes from Eric Robles (Fanboy & Chum Chum) and Dan Milano (Greg the Bunny, Warren the Ape), both hailing from Nickelodeon’s Artist Collective, an internal artist-led development program. The series will be produced at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, Calif.
DISNEY CHANNEL / DISNEY XD:
- 101 Dalmatians Street (Autumn 2018): 101 Dalmatian Street is an original animated series based on the 1956 novel by Dodie Smith and the 1961 Walt Disney film One Hundred and One Dalmatians. It is a fresh take on the two classics and will follow 101 dogs living by themselves without a human owner. It takes place in 21st century London and features the eldest canine siblings Dylan, Dolly and their parents with the other 97 pups playing a supporting role.
The 48 x 11 minute series along with two x 22 minute specials are based on a pitch from Finland based Gigglebug Entertainment’s Anttu Harlin and Joonas Utti. It is being developed by Disney’s original animation team in London along with UK based Passion Animation Studios. The series will premiere worldwide in 2018 and is set to premiere on Disney Channel USA in fall 2018.
- Big City Greens (2018): The brand-new animated comedy is set to air on Disney XD in 2018. Previously titled Country Club, the show centers around a boy named Cricket Green who has moved with his family from the country to the big city. Cricket’s enthusiasm and curiosity inevitability results in him getting into wacky, fish-out-of-water adventures.
Emmy Award-winning director Rob Renzetti (Gravity Falls) serves as executive producer alongside brothers Shane and Chris Houghton.
Writers on Nicktoons’ Harvey Beaks, the Houghton brothers are perhaps best known in comics circles for their all-ages supernatural Western Reed Gunther, published by Image Comics. Shane Houghton has written stories for Peanuts, The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horrorand Casper’s Scare School, while Chris Houghton has contributed to The Simpsons, Adventure Time and Kung Fu Panda comics, as well as Disney’s Gravity Falls.
Big City Greens is scheduled to premiere in 2018 on Disney XD.
- Big Hero 6: The Series (early 2018): Recently premiering an hour-long movie in November 2017, the series picks up immediately following the events of the Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Academy Award-winning feature film and continues the adventures and friendship of Hiro, the fourteen-year-old orphaned tech genius and Baymax, his very special plus-sized inflatable healthcare companion. As the new kid at San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, Hiro faces daunting academic challenges at the prestigious “nerd school” and the social trials of being the “little man on campus.” Luckily, Hiro has his brains, his ingenuity and his best friend bot to help him find his way. But it’s off campus where things get dangerous. Along with neat freak Wasabi, bubbly mad scientist Honey Lemon, fanboy Fred and no nonsense Go Go, the friends form an unlikely, but awesome super hero team – Big Hero 6. Together they face madness and mayhem as a colorful array of science-enhanced villains threaten San Fransokyo.
Originally inspired by the Marvel comic of the same name created by Man of Action, the Big Hero 6 series will see the return of Maya Rudolph as Aunt Cass; Jamie Chung as no-nonsense, speed genius Go Go; Scott Adsit as huggable robot Baymax; Alan Tudyk as tech guru Alistair Krei; Ryan Potter as tech genius Hiro; Genesis Rodriguez as quirky scientist Honey Lemon; David Shaughnessy as the butler Heathcliff; and Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee as Fred’s dad.
Emmy Award winners Mark McCorkle, Bob Schooley and Nick Filippi (the team behind the global hit Disney Channel series Kim Possible) serve as executive producers. Filippi also serves as supervising director. The series will premiere on Disney XD in early 2018, and has been renewed for a second season.
CARTOON NETWORK:
- Unikitty! (January 1st, 2018): The new series will follow the adventures of Unikitty as she rules her kingdom. Her daily responsibilities include making sure everybody is happy, promoting creativity and vanquishing any negativity. That all sounds sugary sweet, but Unikitty also has a bit of an edge when anyone gets in her way.
Joining Unikitty at the castle are her brother and best friend Puppycorn, her trusty bodyguard Hawkodile and the resident scientist Dr. Fox. "Unikitty!" will feature the voices of Tara Strong ("Teen Titans Go!," "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic"), Grey Griffin ("Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!," "The Loud House") Kate Micucci ("Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!," "Steven Universe"), Roger Craig Smith ("Regular Show"), Eric Bauza ("The Adventures of Puss in Boots") and H. Michael Croner ("Review").
"The Lego Batman Movie" and "The Lego Movie's" Dan Lin, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Roy Lee, Jill Wilfert and "Teen Titan Go!'s" Sam Register will serve as executive producers, with "Teen Titan Go!'s" Aaron Horvath as supervising producer. Edward Skudder ("Dick Figures") and Lynn Wang ("Star vs. the Forces of Evil") will serve as producers.
The series has been confirmed to premiere in a special event on January 1st, 2018 at 6.00AM on Cartoon Network USA, and will premiere new episodes on Fridays after the event.
- Craig of the Creek (2018): Previously announced at Cartoon Network’s 2017-2018 upfront, Craig of the Creek is an adventure series created by Matt Burnett and Ben Levin, formerly from Steven Universe. At the Creek, the rules of the outside world don’t apply in this kid utopia of untamed wilderness where Craig and his two best friends have ventured and tribes of children reign over tree forts and dirt bike ramps.
The series stars Phillip Solomon as Craig, Georgina Colovia as Kelsey and H. Michael Croner as JP. The pilot of the show has been released on the Cartoon Network website and application on December 1, 2017 and will premiere on Cartoon Network USA in 2018.
- Summer Camp Island (2018): Based on the original short created by Julia Pott (Adventure Time), the Summer Camp Island series will continue unfolding the mysteries that Oscar and his best friend Hedgehog encounter at a magical summer camp. It’s pilot short won the Best Animated Short award at the Provincetown Film Festival in 2017.
Oscar and his best friend Hedgehog have just been dropped off at their first summer camp. Away from their parents, the two friends must summon all their courage to navigate the mysteries and wonders of this camp where the counselors are witches, horses become unicorns and monsters live under the bed. Not all camps offer the opportunity to swim with a talking shark in the pool, crawl under the bed into a different universe or make friends with the moon, but on Summer Camp Island, anything can happen.
The series has been screened and won many awards at various film festivals in 2016 and 2017. The pilot episode has been released onto Cartoon Network’s website and application on December 2, 2017, and will premiere on Cartoon Network USA in 2018.
- Apple & Onion (2018): The series centers on two lovable buddies who are new and naive to the ways of the "big city of sophisticated food" as they go on adventures and make friends. The comedy was created by George Gendi (The Amazing World of Gumball), who also voices the character Apple in the show.
The short was selected to be screened alongside another Cartoon Network pilot, Welcome To My Life, at the Annecy Festival in 2015, before eventually being released online in May 2016. The short was picked up for a full series in March 2017, announced at Cartoon Network’s 2017-2018 upfront and will premiere on Cartoon Network USA in 2018.
So that’s the stuff to expect in 2018! Are you excited for what’s to come? Or are you disappointed that you didn’t find some stuff interesting?
With that said, the year for cartoons in 2017 is quickly coming to an end (Christmas isn’t a hot time for premieres). So, to celebrate the end of this wonderful year, I’ve created a poll on the best of cartoons and its networks in 2017! It’s a short one, hope you can fill it in! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1tLY-yYXietlgbKq5tLj2N0ibP-AZSPV0vLJPRnCahF0

’Bumblebee’ review: ’Transformers’ prequel/spinoff saves bloated franchise
’Bumblebee’ review: ’Transformers’ prequel/spinoff saves bloated franchise ’Bumblebee’ review: ’Transformers’ prequel/spinoff saves bloated franchise https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Three stars out of four.
The “Transformers” movie universe has lately been leaky and rusted out. It’s become shorthand for bad blockbuster moviemaking — male-driven, mindless spectaculars with sophomoric humour. How can it be saved? Just hand the keys over to some talented women.
“Bumblebee,” the sixth film in the series, is a stand-alone origin story written with disarming skill by Christina Hodson and starring the gifted Hailee Steinfeld. It’s a charming tale of a girl and her adorable car-robot, flipping the script on the tired, bloated franchise. While hard-core fan-boys may complain it’s too soft, this film may turn out to be the perfect way to save “Transformers.” Could Bumblebee rescue Optimus Prime this time?
“Bumblebee ” is set outside San Francisco in 1987, where the loyal B-127 Autobot has been sent to protect Earth and prepare the groundwork for the franchise (He’ll befriend Shia LaBeouf at the start of the first film.) Badly hurt while battling two evil tracking Decepticons, he loses his voice and memories. Then he disguises himself as a vintage Volkswagen Bug and waits for deliverance in a salvage yard (not unlike the entire “Transformers” universe).
He’s discovered by goth-y misfit Charlie Watson (Steinfeld), who is fond of car repair, Motorhead T-shirts and listening to The Smiths. She is still mourning her dead dad and feels generally unheard. For her 18th birthday, Charlie drives off with the junked VW that has a whole bunch of secret options.
Despite discovering that the car is, in fact, an alien, she feels a kinship to this mute metal giant with expressive eyes, calling him Bumblebee. He, too, is unheard, but learns to communicate using word snippets he hears on the radio. She warns that bad guys are sure to come and take him away, but she will protect him. “People can be terrible about things they don’t understand,” she tells him.
//<![CDATA[ ( function() { pnLoadVideo( "videos", "_-FmYvH736g", "pn_video_204476", "", "", {"controls":1,"autoplay":0,"is_mobile":""} ); } )(); //]]>
Thus starts a sort of “E.T.” for 2018, in which Charlie and Bumblebee outfox another pair of Decepticons, the entire U.S. Army (led by a mechanical John Cena) and her distracted mom and stepdad. If the film seems to have that kid-sized, wistful ’80s Steven Spielberg feel, it might be because Spielberg serves as an executive producer. (Franchise helmer Michael Bay has been exiled from the director’s chair to the executive suite.)
Hodson is the first woman to originate and write a film in the $4.3-billion “Transformers” franchise and she proves extremely capable of blending loud action with human pathos, not to mention tart with sweet, though she gets dangerously close to maudlin when it comes to Charlie’s dad. “I can’t lose you, too,” the young woman tells the yellow robot. Steinfeld nails teen alienation but also can turn on empathy beautifully and has a winning cockiness. Plus, she sings the movie’s signature song (Talk about a transformer).
Hodson and director Travis Knight (“Kubo and the Two Strings”) take full advantage of the film’s late-1980s setting to give us visual and audio jokes. Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love” plays during a montage as Charlie lovingly restores a muscle car, and Sammy Hagar’s “I Can’t Drive 55” blares during a car chase. This is the 80s, so expect plenty of Walkman, Pop-Tarts, “Alf” and “Miami Vice” references. And look for a moment when it seems like the very internet itself gets created, a clever low-key touch.
Hits by Bon Jovi, Duran Duran, a-ha, Tears for Fears and Wang Chung are sprinkled throughout. (Bumblebee turns out to be quite a good music critic, too, hilariously rejecting some of Charlie’s options). Die-hard franchise fans also get to hear the power ballad “You Got the Touch” that appeared in the 1986’s animated “Transformers” film. (Well played, filmmakers.) They’re also true to the universe — Bumblebee will eventually change at the end to what he becomes when Bay was in charge, a Chevrolet Camaro.
//<![CDATA[ ( function() { pnLoadVideo( "videos", "WwYKLTyE164", "pn_video_719597", "", "", {"controls":1,"autoplay":0,"is_mobile":""} ); } )(); //]]>
After so many over-the-top battles in the metal-thumping series, it’s fun here to watch Bumblebee commit more small-scale mayhem, like egging someone’s car. The robot is rendered as a sort of distracted, flaky adolescent teenager and a sequence in which he’s left home alone is priceless. One caution: Younger viewers are advised to watch the 1985 iconic film “The Breakfast Club” — it comes up several times rather brilliantly, especially in one final scene with Cena which refreshingly doesn’t go trite.
Hard-core fans may be unhappy that there’s not enough robot-on-robot violence or turned off by the meet-cute between teen and bot, but hopefully it will attract an audience either tired or turned off by the franchise’s past rigidity and addiction to spectacle. This is what we needed: Smaller, quieter, more human and sweeter.
“Bumblebee,” a Paramount Pictures release, is rated PG-13 for “sequences of sci-fi action violence.” Running time: 119 minutes.
John Cena: 'Bumblebee' brings heart to 'Transformers'

Pool’s Best Push Through To The Final 64
(Doha, Qatar)–A veritable armada of pool’s biggest stars pushed their way through to the Final 64 knockout stage at the Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha today, as the business end of proceedings quickly started to take shape at the 2018 World 9-ball Championship. It was a very busy day which saw 32 players qualify for the money rounds, and another 32 players see their dreams of glory come to a screeching halt. Of course it was quite expected when the tournament began on Friday that over half the original field of 128 players from over 40 countries had no chance at actually winning the event. But the outcomes today were somewhat surprising in that we saw few of the upsets fans have come to expect in the group stages over the years. The only big name to fall by the wayside and get a pink slip was 2001 World 9-ball Champion and Hall of Famer Mika Immonen, who lost his second straight match in as many days. Otherwise the day’s action saw one superstar and rising star after the next take their place in the final 64. When the field is filled at the end of the day’s play on Sunday, fans around the world can expect one of the finest runs to the gold in many years. World number one Klenti Kaci hasn’t looked his sharpest so far. But the 19 year old Albanian did what he had to do in a steady 9-6 win over Kuwaiti Meshaal Al Murdhi. Defending champion Carlo Biado of the Philippines seemed to be on cruise control in his 9-5 win over Russia’s Sergey Lutsker. Despite being the reigning 9-ball king, the Filipino great benefits from being so humble and so low key that he plays almost unnoticed. The biggest winners Saturday in terms of countries was Taiwan, which saw a whopping seven of its players qualify for the round of 64. 2015 World 9-ball champion Ko Pin Yi looked the goods today as he handily beat Czech Republic’s Roman Hybler, 9-4. 2017 semi-finalist Lin Wu Kun grinded out a solid 9 – 7 victory over former champion Yukio Akagariyama of Japan. Ko’s younger brother Ko Ping Chung took a 9 – 6 win over Greece’s Nikolas Malai. Hsieh Chia Chen beat Russian strongman Ruslan Chinhov 9-8 to make it through.vLui Ri Ten beat American Billy Thorpe 9-7 to make it through. Taiwan’s biggest monster right now—and that is saying something– is surely Chang Jung Lin who is currently ranked number 2 in the world. Chang did win his second straight match to qualify today, but he once again had to go to the limit to get there. Chang blew an 8-5 lead to Greece’s Damianos Giallourakis and had to eke out victory with a nervy clear in the very last rack for a second straight 9-8 win.
The USA’s Shane Van Boening, who is one of the heavy favorites this week in Doha, didn’t have as easy a time today as he did on day one. But he was never in real trouble against Venezuelan veteran Jalal Al Sarisi, winning 9-7. SVB’s Mosconi Cup teammate Corey Duel played steady 9-ball and easily defeated Finland’s Petri Makkonen 9-4 to make the knockout stage. World number six and 2014 champion Niels Feijen had another solid day, defeating Spain’s Francisco Diaz-Pizarro, 9-7. The Dutchman’s Mosconi teammate Albin Ouschan didn’t fare as well as he took a thumping from Poland’s Konrad Juszczyszyn, 9-4. Juszczyszyn may not be a household name to pool fans but it should be noted that he is the current European 9-ball champion. Another Pole who scored a very big victory was Mateusz Sniegocki who took down a very tough Filipino, Jeffrey Ignacio, 9-5. Tomasz Kaplan made it three for Poland today with a win over South Africa’s Jason Theron. It was good day for the Germans as both Ralf Souquet and Joshua Filler won their second straight matches to qualify for the final 64. 18 year old Russian Fedor Gorst continued to impress as he qualified with a handy 9-1 win over Jeong Young Hwa of Korea. It was a very big day for the Japanese side as three players made it through with impressive wins. Takano Tomoo took down former world champion Wu Jiaqing 9-8. Naoyuki Oi was a 9 – 4 winner over Finland’s Casper Matikainen. And Tomoya Iima took a 9 – 7 win over Hoang Guong Quoc of Vietnam. Other winners who qualified for the knockout rounds included the Philippines Jeffrey De Luna, Singapore’s Aloysius Yapp, Canada’s Alex Pagulayan, Myanmar’s talented Phone Myint Kyaw, Spain’s Fracisco Sanchez Ruiz, Greece’s Alex Kazakis, China’s Wang Can and Russia’s Konstantin Stepanov. Chris Melling, the lone Brit in the field, again looked the goods as he easily beat South Africa’s Richard Halliday, 9-3. Qatar’s Waleed Majid also won his second straight to make it through, beating China’s Xu Xiacong, 9-6.
Play continues on Sunday in Doha at the Al Arabi with the action beginning at 12pm local time (GMT +3.) All matches on Sunday will be do or die, losers side matches with the winners advancing to the knockout round and the losers going out of the event. The winner of the 2018 World 9-ball Championship will receive $40,000. The runner up will receive $20,000. The 80s Cruise Omnibus: Tommy Heath, Jessie’s Girl, Trial by Fire, and DJ Christopher J
This is a part of our full coverage of the 2018 80s Cruise. Read more about the floating music festival here.
Jenna O’Gara of Jessie’s Girl on the 80s Cruise by LJ Moskowitz
It’s possible that no one enjoyed their time onboard as much as Tommy Heath, lead singer of Tommy Tutone. He was spotted all over the ship chatting up fans, standing for selfies, and knocking back the occasional drink. He was all smiles interacting with the audience during a poolside show where he played a mix of covers and original material, including the ubiquitous, “867-5309 (Jenny).”
The set out at the pool was a curious combination of songs. Tommy Tutone put out three albums in the 80s, but Heath performed a total of four tracks from those records. Like Rick Springfield, the songs he chose to cover were all from the 1960’s. He might have performed different songs during his other sets, but it was a challenge catching his performances. Overlapping schedules made it next to impossible to watch a full set from Heath, Thomas Dolby, or Katrina Leskanich.
Many passengers complained about missing events because of scheduling. As Minnesota businessman, David Drill, put it, “(There is) so much going on that you end up missing stuff that you really wanted to see.” Dolby, Leskanich, and Heath performed in the smaller venues at times that almost always conflicted with one or both of the main stage shows. Fans were left with the choice of missing part of their sets or missing them all together.
Chris Hall and Jenna O’Gara of Jessie’s Girl perform for passengers on the 80s Cruise by LJ Moskowitz
This was particularly frustrating considering ECP scheduled the two cover bands to perform each night without any conflicts. As much as fans loved Jessie’s Girl and Trial by Fire, it was an odd choice to have one or both of them perform every day while fans had to choose between the big-name acts. The maiden voyage of The 80s Cruise had few of these types of conflicts. In 2016, Modern English played the daytime t-shirt party, while Wang Chung played the pool on Neon Night. This year, ECP had Jessie’s Girl play both, leaving fewer slots for celebrity guests.
It was easy to see why ECP had scheduled the band to perform so often. Jessie’s Girl has been featured on the Cruise from the first sailing with some people listing them as the main reason for going year after year. More than a mere cover band, the group featured three different vocalists each trading off leads while going through more costume changes than the finale of “RuPaul’s Drag Race”.
Mark Rinzel of Jessie’s Girl on the 80s Cruise by LJ Moskowitz
Fronting Jessie’s Girl were Jenna O’Gara, Chris Hall, and Mark Rinzel. O’Gara graduated from the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston. Hall and Rinzel have both worked in professional theater. This made all of them more than qualified to handle, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and “(Don’t You) Forget About Me”.
The band faced more than its fair share of challenges on the 2018 sailing as keyboardist and Musical Director, Paul “Sky” Armento, had to be rushed back to New York because of a medical emergency just before sailing. Armento founded the band with Eric Presti, guitarist and Technical Director. The two holed up in a hotel room for hours the morning of departure because even though Armento was still in pain after a night in the ER, they were determined to lay down keyboard tracks so the band could perform that week.
The band’s first performance at the Sail Away party was a bit rough. Their tour manager had flown back with Armento making their time on board more challenging. They recruited Brian Wilk, half of the Dueling Pianos show, to fill in on keys, but the pianist needed more than a quick rehearsal before mastering “The Final Countdown” by Europe. There were one or two glitches with the backing track during the second performance, but after that, the audience would never have known the band was working without two key members of their touring operation.
DJ Christopher J on the 80s Cruise by Chuck Coverly
When news got out that Armento had to miss the sailing because of a health concern, the response from passengers was striking. Many asked each other for updates and passed around information garnered from other band members. Houston native, Mina Credeur, repurposed the Kevin Bacon poster she had taped to her cabin door to make a “get well soon” card that hundreds signed. Armento eventually recovered and posted a “thank you” message on Facebook. The ordeal made it obvious that Jessie’s Girl was no longer just a name on a list of entertainers; many of the passengers considered them a part of their 80s Cruise family.
Another important member of that Cruise family was Berlin drummer Christopher Olivas. Passengers were excited to discover Olivas was scheduled to perform under the alias, DJ Christopher J. There wasn’t always a good variety of music being played around the ship as Mina Credeur of Spring, TX explained. “(There was) so much more in the 80s, especially for dancing.” The overreliance on pop songs made the late night parties feel more like a bachelorette party at a generic 80s bar than an actual club night.
Olivas deviated from “The Big 80s” brand by mixing new wave, classic alternative, and rap and won rave reviews from passengers. Chuck Coverly said, “I loved that Chris DJ’s by dipping deep into the alternative bucket.” Myley Rosenbaum agreed, “Love Christopher Olivas! More from him, please!”
Trial by Fire hosted the 80s Prom. Photo by TuKe Photography
Trial by Fire were initially billed as a Journey cover band on last year’s sailing, but the band from Los Angeles has been much more accomplished than many passengers realized. Billy and Eric Mondragon are two-thirds of DW3, a jazz band that has seen chart success in the US and UK. Rod Pantoja, Johnny Reyes, and Whit Petrell perform all over Los Angeles under the name, Steel Rod. A sort of super group, Trial by Fire had no problems handling the entire spectrum of arena rock.
The band pulled double and triple duty by performing several times, hosting live band karaoke, and participating in a bar hop with guests. They donned suits for Prom and dressed up in karate uniforms for Cobra Kai karaoke. They were the life of the party at all of their events and like Jessie’s Girl, will be back for the 2019 Cruise.

Van Boening, Other Top Stars Cruise On Day One In Doha
(Doha, Qatar)–Shane Van Boening has never won a World 9-ball Championship. He did, of course, come ever so close, finishing runner up in 2015, and 2016. After skipping last year’s championship, however, there is a palpable sense in Doha that the American star is absolutely destined to finally grab the world crown in 2018.
Interestingly there are eight former World 9-ball Champions in this year’s field, all of them still highly capable of pulling off the impossible feat yet again. But nobody is yet talking about them. It’s the moniker ‘SVB’ who is on everyone’s lips.
Van Boening has admitted that he is playing his best pool perhaps ever. After a grueling six month training regime, he led Team USA to a thrilling victory in the Mosconi Cup last week. He showed up in Doha saying he intends to win, and that he is playing with zero pressure on his shoulders.
Fans in Doha, and the pro pool community itself seem to agree something is afoot. While most players played in the relative obscure quiet of the cavernous Al Arabi Sports Club on day 1 of this year’s championship, Van Boening’s time in the arena today actually drew a fair amount of watchers. Everyone and anyone who likes pro pool around here seems to feel something special is afoot. The American didn’t disappoint in his first outing, as he crushed Poland’s Marek Kudlik 9-1. Good breaking, solid potting, deft safeties all showed up in Van Boening’s arsenal today. Combined with his quiet confidence, SVB laid down an early marker stating that nothing short of victory in Doha will suffice.
As all 128 players saw action on the first day of the 2018 World 9-ball Championship, it’s clear, though, that Van Boening will have plenty of serious contenders just as eager and capable of taking the crown on December 20. This year’s field is positively stacked with ferocious talent, both young and not so young. With the Wiraka tables breaking fairly easily—wing ball down, 1 in or near the side pocket—it’s all going to come down to who can handle the almost impossible pressure. Pool fans are in for a real treat over the next six days.
In the group stages it’s all about just winning two matches, to make it through to the final 64, where the tournament becomes single knockout all the way to the final. Defending champion Carlo Biado of the Philippines had an easy time of it today, easily taking down Argentina’s Llanos Jorge, 9-3. The man who lost in last year’s final to Biado, fellow Filipino Roland Garcia, came into Doha one of the hottest players in Asia and with high expectations. Garcia, though, stumbled out of the blocks to Taiwan’s Hsu Jui An, 9-8. Garcia will move over to the one loss side of his group where he needs two wins to advance.
World number one Klenti Kaci came out looking tired against the always tough Chilean Alejandro Carvajal. The Albanian teen was down four racks early but battled back to clip Carvajal at the wire, 9-7.
Pool’s young guns get more numerous and more dangerous year after year. 21 year old German sensation Joshua Filler played his usual brand of solid, care free pool in a 9-6 win over Bulgaria’s Ruslanov Stanimir. 17 year old Russian Fedor Gorst handled the always tough Kuwaiti Omar Al Shaheen, winning 9-6. 17 year old Pole Wiktor Zielinski came in with some expectations on his shoulders but he fell to Japan’s Tomoya Iima, 9-7.
It was a good day for the USA Mosconi Cup team as both Billy Thorpe and Corey Duel notched victories, and moved with one win of making the final 64. Canada’s Alex Pagulayan, a winner in 2004, barely scraped by Lebanon’s Mohammad Berjaoui, 9 – 8. Fellow Canadian John Morra has an easier time of it today, blanking the Philippines Roberto Brillantes, 9-0.
Taiwan’s Chang Jung Lin is considered one of the tournament favorites but he struggled mightily against Korea’s Kwon Hojun. Chang was actually down 6-2 at one point but stormed back and won at the wire, 9-8.
Chang was one of eight Taiwanese notching victory today, including 2015 champion Ko Pin Yi, Ko’s younger brother Ko Ping Chun, Hsieh Chia Chen and Lin Wu Kun. The Ko’s actually have an even younger brother in the event, Ko Ping Han, but he lost to Japan’s Hayato Hijikata.
The four European Mosconi Cup players on hand all won today. Besides Kaci, Austria’s Albin Ouschan continued to look rock solid with a 9-4 win over the USA’s Thomas Tokoph. The Netherlands’ Niels Feijen waltzed to victory with a neat 9-5 win over the always stingy Taiwanese Chang Yu Lung. Greece’s Alexander Kazakis barely got by Slovakia’s Jakub Koniar, 9-8.
England’s Chris Melling is someone people seem to be talking about as a possible champion, and the lone British representative on hand didn’t disappoint, winning easily over the Netherlands Marc Bijsterboch, 9-2.
Former world champion Wu Jiaqing of China cruised with a 9-1 win over the Netherlands’ Jimmy Worung. China went 5 out of six today with wins also by Dang Jinhu, Liu Haitao, Wan Can and Xu Xiacong.
Former world champion and hall offamer Ralf Souquet found victory today with a 9-3 win over the Maldives’Mohammed Hassan. But former world champion and fellow hall of famer MikaImmonen fell to Russia’s Ruslan Chinahov, 9-5.
Qatar’s favorite player made a splash today. Waleed Majid, who made it to the quarterfinals here in 2014, showed that he has clawed his way back into championship form with a 9-5 win over former US Open champion, Yu Hsuan “Kevin” Cheng.
Play continues on Saturday in Doha at the Al Arabi with the action beginning at 10am local time (GMT +3.) After the four sessions on Saturday, 32 players will be out and 32 players will be through to the final 64.
The winner of the 2018 World 9-ball Championship will receive $40,000. The runner up will receive $20,000. The total prize fund is $200,000.

FILLER STEAMROLLS INTO THE KNOCKOUT ROUNDS
Young German star joins 31 other players in the final 64 as the field is cut in half after Day 2 of the World 9-ball Championship.
By Ted Lerner WPA Press Officer
(Doha, Qatar)–The action at the 2017 World 9-ball Championship picked up apace on Day 2, as 32 players out of the field of 128 were shown the exits, while another 32 punched their tickets to the Final 64 single elimination knockout stage.
The remaining 32 players to vie for pool’s most prestigious crown will be determined on Monday at the Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha. From there all eyes will be on the prize, as whoever wins six straight matches over three days will be crowned the new champion of the world in 9-ball come December 14th.
For those who hastily got their pink slips on Sunday, there wasn’t too much misery to speak of. This was due to the fact that most of the 32 players who took their second defeats really had no hope of making much noise in the first place. However, there were several shockers that still turned some heads throughout the pool world.
Mika Immonen is normally a player fans expect to make a run in big events. But the 44 year old Hall of Famer never seemed to get it together this week. In a do or die match against Korea’s Woo Seung Ryu, Immonen fell flat for the second day in a row, bowing out of the tournament in the group stage via a 9-5 score line.
Alex Pagulayan reached the semi-finals last year here in Doha, but 2017 in Doha turned out to be a stinker for the Fil-Canadian. The gregarious 39 year old fell to Lebanon’s Mohammad Berjawi , 9-7, and was knocked out barely after the proceedings had begun.
Other notable players who were shown the exits included China’s Wang Can, and Japan’s Toru Korubiyashi.
For the Americans, the 2017 campaign will go down as perhaps the worst in the illustrious 25 year history of the World 9-ball Championship. No big name American players bothered to make the trip to the Middle East this year. And the two that did, Hunter Lombardo and Robert Hart, both went two matches and out. This could be the first time in history that the last 64 of the World 9-ball Championship will not feature one single American player.
The field that is taking shape for the final 64 is, however, looking very deep indeed. One thing that is certainly quite apparent already is that the youth movement throughout the sport will continue and expand this week in Doha.
20 year old German Joshua Filler has been generating tons of excitement throughout the pool world lately. His incredible talent and devil-may-care shooting style has many proclaiming that the German youngster is destined to be the Ronnie O’Sullivan of the pool world. Despite a long trip from Vegas where he won the Mosconi Cup and captured the MVP prize for Team Europe, Filler hasn’t missed a beat here in Doha. On Sunday he played without a care in the world, first taking down Greece’s Damianos Giallourakis, 9-6, and then handily defeating China’s Kong Dejing by the same score for a spot in the final 64.
“I feel really exhausted and not quite the same,” Filler said after his second win. “I won both matches 9-6. I just have to improve my break and let’s see what happens over the next few days.
“You can’t really compare this to the Mosconi Cup where you play in front of 1500 people and millions at home. There is so much pressure because you play for your team and your country. Here I play more relaxed and there’s not too much pressure.
“Inside I feel very confident, I say to myself I’m the best player but I need that. I just play my best game and I want to win this world championship. At 20 years old it would be perfect. At the beginning of this year I had two dreams. One was to win the Mosconi Cup and the other was to win the World Championship.”
Another youngster grabbing a lot of attention is 19 year old Albanian Klenti Kaci. While the exact opposite of Filler in terms of speed and style, the talented Kaci always seems to find a way to win, no matter the opponent. On Sunday, the Albanian star defeated Chu Bingjie of China to qualify for the final 64.
In terms of countries, Taiwan easily had the best day on Sunday with six players qualifying for the final 64. World number one Chang Jung Lin, Chang Yu Lung, Ko Pin Yi, Ko Ping Chung, Lin Wu Kun and Chieh Liu Cheng all won their second straight matches to make the knockout rounds.
The Philippines is looking like it will send its usual armada to the knockout rounds. Carlo Biado, Jeffrey De Luna and Jeffrey Ignacio all won their second straight matches and qualified for the final 64. Warren Kiamco, Johann Chua, Francisco Felicilda, and Roland Garcia all lost on the winners side of their groups and will have one more chance on Monday to try and make the knockout rounds.
There will be Europeans aplenty in the final 64. Defending champion Albin Ouschan of Austria handily beat Taiwan’s Hsieh Chia Chen 9-5 to advance. Spain’s Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, Russia’s Konstantin Stepanov, Sweden’s Fischer Sparrenlov, Greece’s Nikolas Malai and Alexander Kazakis, the Netherlands Marco Teutscher, Czech’s Roman Hybler, Polish veteran Radislaw Babica, and 19 year old Lithuanian Pijus Labutis all won their second matches to make the grade.
It was a good day for South America at the World 9-ball Championship. Venezuela’s Jalal Al Sarisi(Yousef) beat the Philippines Johann Chua 9-8 to advance. Peru will have its first ever player in the knockout rounds after Martines Gerson defeated Germany’s Andre Lackner 9-8.
Japan’s Naoyuki Oi barely squeaked by Canada’s John Morra, 9-8, to qualify. While compatriot Hayato Hijikata took down Estonia’s Dennis Grabe on the winners side to make the knockout rounds.
Play in the group stages continues at the Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha on Monday beginning at 10am Doha time(GMT +3). All matches will be do-or-die on the one loss side of the brackets. The winners will advance to the final 64, while the losers will be out of the tournament.
The Final 64, single elimination round begins on Tuesday Dec. 12. All matches will be a race to 11, alternate break. The final will be a race to 13, alternate break.
