”They won’t find you,” Shen Yuan promised. His voice was soft but it hissed in the shadowy corners of the abandoned temple they’d taken refuge in. Coming from any other person, those words would have sounded like a threat, but from him… Shen Jiu was unnerved at how quickly he was willing to show vulnerability in front of the rogue cultivator. A hint of protectiveness, of security, and he was willing to throw aside so much. Shen Jiu had to forcibly remind himself that he’d barely known him for more than a few weeks. He shouldn’t feel safe, should never let down his guard. Qi-ge had taught him that.
But… Shen Yuan hadn’t turned him in for a reward even though he knew his history—that he was an escaped slave, a thief, a murderer.
He inched closer until he felt Shen Yuan’s back against his. The rogue cultivator gave off warmth like a brazier and Shen Jiu could feel his traitorous body easing into something close to sleep. “Why are you so kind?” He said it like a curse.
Shen Yuan was silent for a long time. Rain continued to pour outside, drops slipping in through broken roof tiles. His sigh was barely audible. “…Because it doesn’t pay to hurt someone just for existing.”
But… why? Shen Jiu closed his eyes tightly, refusing to let the tears fall. That would be the ultimate self-betrayal.
Something warm stroked his hair and he realized Shen Yuan had reached across their bodies to comfort him. He should hate the rogue cultivator for his unwanted kindness. He wanted to hate him. But he remained still and didn’t pull away from that too-human touch.

Every time I think "Yue QIngyuan would totally hide a body for Shen Jiu", I get the pleasure of remembering that YQY canonically covered up SJ murdering innocent people.

suddenly seized with the desire to write/draw a few short little scenes from the world after the events of You Can (Not) Redo (the uh. the yqy timeloop fanfiction. not the evangelion movie which i named it for) because it is, generally speaking, a happy ending, but also yqy is left deeply, deeply broken in ways that would be both fascinating and hilarious to explore

AU where SY transmigrates into a lizard spirit and gets captured by Wu Yanzi. He's chained literally and spiritually but is there when wyz meets Shen Jiu and he immediately thinks "Oh I must protect this poor child."
Wyz leaves sy with sj like "make sure he doesn't screw it up". So SY paralyzes QHT so she doesn't get in the way or witness anything, but, uhhhh, she doesn't get out of the fire, oops!
As time passes SY tries to mitigate the damage to SJ's spiritual system and they bond over being captives. When SJ kills WYZ at the IAC, SY is freed, but chooses to stay with SJ because the kid clearly needs him.
The QJPL finds it very auspicious that a spirit lizard (a BLUE/GREEN one, no less) is attached to SJ and it makes his time as a disciple much easier.
Especially when little lizard Yuan communicates to LQG to fuck off and leave his friend alone (LQG is less certain of SJ's duplicity bc of the spirit and harasses him much less though they are never friends. SY also reveals SJ was protecting LQG on that one mission with SQH who is very confused about lizard bro)
SY gains human form when LBH is 15 and he's cultivating in the lingxi caves with SQQ - just in time to help save LQG who is immediately smitten with SY
But sqq is no fool and immediately makes YQY and SQH plan a wedding for him. SY doesn't realize the wedding is TO HIM until the day of when they're dressing him in the red and gold robes. When the tailors came to take his measurements he thought it was for guest clothes bc he had nothing! And he did get a new wardrobe! It's not his fault!
In the end he convinces himself SJ just wanted to keep living together and now that sy has a human form it wouldn't be proper otherwise.
And if they share a bed, well, sy is cold blooded!

I was sleeping and right before my alarm went off I dreamt of a scene where some hotshot demonic cultivator sends a message to Cang Qiong asking to spar and speak with the sects “resident expert on demonic cultivation” with the implication that it’s a peak lord and the peak lord meeting has them asking who tf that could be and tossing around various ideas while YQY and SQQ avoid each others gazes
(Unnamed shidi 1-adopted but raised with demonic ancestry; SQH-trades in demonic realm and has a secret demon lover he sneaks into the sect [HOW DO YOU ALL KNOW THAT?!]; LQG-expert on fighting demonic anything; MQF-regularly treats demonic afflictions and as such is the most researched on how it works)
In the dream I was so sure SQQ would reveal himself/declare he’d be the one to deal with it but awake I’m convinced he’d keep silent, so everyone has to go and meet the DC cuz they aren’t letting anyone go alone who knows what he plans to do
Anywho post dream territory but the day comes and SQQ is half convinced he’s about to be thrown out of the sect
DC: I’m looking for WYZ’s successor, Xiao Jiu
Everyone slowly turns to look at SQQ cuz by now everyone’s heard the sect leader call him that (insert theory that the Shen in his name was picked up soon after WYZ was killed. Like, on the way to meet the previous peak lords kinda soon and possibly stolen from one of the dead disciples)
SQQ steps forward with everyone’s gazes on him, seething (how dare he use that name) and keyed up from the last month of spiraling, deciding to out with a bang: successor! What fucking successor? To be such would imply the bastard taught me anything and even worse to suggest that I continued using it
DC: then how’d you know all his newly developed techniques? Like, you’ve definitely been seen using them when he trained you
SQQ: he didn’t train me in shit I was his lab rat he used to see if something would kill him before trying himself
Anywho, I have a lot of points that I wanna fit into this but idk where they’d go
Righteous cultivation is the growing of internal energy usually by advancing yourself in some way (physically, spiritually, mentally) and at points letting environmental energy pass around you, whereas Demonic cultivation is from siphoning of energy external to yourself, much faster but much more draining to your environment and others. Usually incompatible with human cultivation bases due to a lack of central, inborn demonic core causing most demonic cultivators to end up going insane from the patchwork of energies with no central focus.
Because of this any who stay somewhat sane gain a lot of power and recognition
WYZ theorized that if you were to steal a demonic core and consume it, you could solve the issue of energy focus. He used SJ to test this theory and found that it created a pseudo demon. The more SJ cultivated demonically, the more demonic features he presented.
SQQ has mysteriously never once gone to Qian Cao Peak. Not during his discipleship and definitely not during his tenure as peak lord. MQF hasn’t realized this cuz SQQ keeps sneaking in and fudging the papers.
His Shizun believed SJ was part demon and brought him into the sect as part test and part curiosity. They may or may not have also mildly experimented on him, but at least they helped him avoid qian cao
Eventually his Shizun came to the conclusion that he’s the only one on the peak with common sense and any strategic ability, so he became head disciple
SQQ is aware that his qi deviations are mostly due to having a demonic foundation and spending years trying to feed it with traditional cultivation. Not sure if this means he has a really tiny golden core or a really poorly fed demonic one or both at once like a half demon. I’m leaning towards both cuz of QJ Shizun experimentation
SQQ has retractable claws (he keeps them retracted and hidden under thick gloves), sharp teeth he must file down (they fall out after a year and the next set grow back sharper, during this time he almost always has his face covered by a fan), a deep-set craving for meat (and QJ serves only vegetarian food), and his ears have a slight point and rest slightly higher on his head than with human faces (he’s pretty sure they keep moving slightly higher each year to become like fox ears, like the fox core he consumed. He hates how it still affects him even without active demonic cultivation. He hides the ears with elaborate hairstyles and mourns his old body)
The other peak lords see his fan as him hiding his intentions from them and not showing his face as hiding dishonesty. The gloves are a testament to his refusal to touch what’s below him. His insistence on eating meat based foods at PL meetings emphasize his delicate constitution. His increasingly elaborate hairstyles display his arrogance for all to see. Listen they already think he’s a spoiled young lord the increased distance caused by his weird cultivation doesn’t help
SQQ wins the spar with the demonic cultivator with ease even when using only demonic cultivation techniques 15 years out of practice.
PLs are surprised to see the other DC fights exactly like SJ did when he first entered the sect (ruthless no holds barred street fighting. Daggers and concealed weapons of any kind other than spiritual swords. Plucking leaves flying flowers is used and now clearly seen as a demonic technique. SQQs fan blades are sharpened. Dust is thrown in eyes and joints are snapped and male parts are targeted.) They can easily see where SQQ must have learned it if that’s how all demonic cultivators fought (like demons). Even if they despise the lack of honor in this fight, at least it’s mutual
At some point during the fight SQQs more demonic traits are revealed (his hair coming undone to reveal his ears, sharp teeth on display, claws having long since torn through his gloves
Most demonic cultivators are self taught through trial and error and rarely have the privilege of learning to fight from masters. Additionally, due to their tendency to go insane, it’s common for most interactions between DCs to turn deadly at any point, so experienced DCs have no room for error or leniency. Fights are determined when one is trapped and begging for their life, and the other decides whether to spare them.
DC was not expecting the QJ PL to be this good, WYZs disciple or no
SQQ states that he was not WYZs disciple and reminds DC that he was the one who killed WYZ
DC asks why and SQQ explains that the three reasons he stayed with WYZ were a)blackmail, b)fear for his life, and c)to find his brothers remains and put him to rest. Imagine his surprise when he finds his brother doing perfectly well in a cultivation sect and WYZ about to kill him. Suddenly points b and c are irrelevant and point a is only removed upon WYZs death so it wasn’t a hard choice
The two walk to a nearby pavilion to discuss techniques and trade stories, with equal parts sarcasm, insults, and laughter
DCs are usually quite willing to trade less personal techniques outside of battle due to the “self taught” aspect of their cultivation
Somehow they end up talking about how brothels are safe spaces for DCs as they are great sources of information and less likely to call the Xianxia cops than inns
PLs are in the background shocked the two could go from a death match to the friendliest conversation they’ve ever seen SQQ display. YQY is salty and guilty in equal parts. LQG somehow comes to the conclusion that all of his and SQQs early interactions were actually SQQ trying to be friendly. SHQ sees this revelation play out in real time and points out that the murder attempt was a misunderstanding. QQQ is begrudgingly impressed to see prissy SQQ so willing to get down and dirty. MQF has been quietly having a crisis at the quality of his work to never realize this and comes to the realization that he’s never personally examined SQQ
MQF comes over and insists on checking over SQQ, who basically goes “fuck it. Sure” and all of my initial bullet points come to light
Everyone loses their shit finding out that SQQ is apparently famous among the DC community due to being the mad lad ex slave who not only convinced WYZ to take on a disciple, but also the one to kill that bastard.
End conclusion SQQ gains a DC friend and the other PLs agree to that as enrichment and stress relief for SQQ.

Really interesting how, iirc, of all the crimes sj got charged with, being an (ex?) demonic cultivator wasn't one of them.
The child abuse and the brothel going, the vow breaking and murder and arson, none of those could be connected to lbhs behaviour (at the time he was still in disguise as a human cultivator).
But accusing him of demonic cultivation? Training under famous criminal wyz? That would have carried a much bigger weight in the cultivation world than one off instances he did as a kid before he joined the mountain decades ago. The rest of the stuff, yeah it's nasty, but it's not cultivation ruining in bed with demons blood drinking pagan rituals in their good Christian righteous jianghu taboo.
If airplane had wanted lbh would have found or faked all the evidence necessary, regardless of if lbh even thought sj actually had done it, just like the rest of his crimes.
It would have been pretty interesting, though, if sj had done it. Had learned demonic cultivation and kept learning it in secret for when his own crippled cultivation failed, giving him a huge edge just in understanding how the enemy thinks. Knowing their tactics, their average capabilities, how to fudge a talisman, how to draw out someone else's energy by force if necessary. (One of my favourite fics for this is The Original Goods does some Original Good, totally check it out. Spymaster Sqq ftw.)
Now, back in svsss canon, can you imagine if sy could do demonic cultivation?? After throwing lbh in the abyss for being a demon, after running from him, after xinmo, after marrying him. Wife plot twist! Damsel rushes to the aid of his heavily injured demonic husband, busts out some impossible demonic moves to save him!
Lbh would find that very validating, very confusing, and more than likely Really Quite Hot.
How sy would even know he could do demonic cultivation, I'll let you decide, but imagine if there was also a body swap later and sy used both demonic and human qi like he'd been doing it his entire life. (I will also rec Inappropriate Use May Result in Strange Side Effects because it is also really good!)
But the fact that Sqq has a history of demonic cultivation and then marries a half demon emperor who can use both naturally? And the way sy treated lbh supposedly because of his fear/hate of the demonic? Only for it to turn out that he himself had been using demonic energy before lbh had even been born?? But also the horrible things sj went through as a demonic cultivator 'in training' under wyz? Leaving 'Sqq' with that trauma? The potential fear that lbh would enact or even just catch Sqq in the blast radius of all of that again?
Sqq accidentally stumbling on a plausible reason to explain his meta knowledge panic without a system reveal? Demonic cultivation trauma? A way to relieve his husbands guilt and own lingering trauma of rejection?? To prove to him that the abyss wasn't his fault or of any innate disgust of his very being??? He'd be all over that like system on an ooc breach.
Also, it would be extremely cool.

okay, this may be either the most genius or the dumbest idea i've had so far but.
what if JGY and SJ swapped their men?
i mean, LXC with his pristine reputation could actually make for a pretty good defender for the victim of an intentional smear campaign as long as LXC himself is willing to defend the man. and i kinda feel that LXC wouldn't be all that appalled by SJ's crimes? he had sympathetic reasons for the qiu family massacre and running away with WYZ and he didn't - as far as we know - kill anyone after joining the sect. we'll have to assume, of course, that in this scenario he's willing to actually talk and explain himself instead of being the world's most uncooperative defendant.
(some of y'all may ask, "what about his abuse of LBH, the one crime he actually committed with no sympathetic reason behind it?". and i'll say, what about it? let's be real here, no one in that setting including LXC would send a respectable sect master to jail over accusations of child abuse alone.)
and as for JGY. well. what JGY needs is a man with a huge ass sword who'll hear out the accusations against him and will, without a hint of hesitation, say that he doesn't actually care and he's taking his shidi back to his sect right this instance, thank you.
and like YQY would do it even if he believed JGY to be a cold-hearted murderer, but given that JGY is much more open to the idea of defending himself, YQY wouldn't even have to silently suffer in doubt! thank you for clearly explaining your actions and motivation behind them, i'm so glad i know exactly what you did and didn't do, and why you had to kill the people you killed! i'm so happy you can actually talk and explain yourself to me. i would've defended you regardless, but it's nice not to feel like i'm betraying my own conscience by staying at your side.

What do you mean by Shen Jiu being female-coded? /genq
Hello! To preface, in a lot of fandom spheres calling any cis gendered character "[gender]-coded" tends to be negative, usually to highlight poor writing or usage of harmful stereotypes, i.e., male-coded women being arrogant and demeaning to other women or female-coded men being sensitive and the butt of jokes among other men. However, there are instances where it is done and, rather than promote negative gender stereotypes it rather... Emphasises a masculine and feminine natures that resonate with people.
I am not always good with words, but there is [gender]-coded that is basically thinly veiled sexism and there is [gender]-coded that is simply nature. Think along the terms of pre Christian colonialism, where many cultures and religions have masculine energy and feminine energy defined outside of biological gender.
I see SJ as female coded because of how the fandom reacts/reacted to him. We don't got a lot of info on him, canon wise, at least not without heavy (and unreliable) bias. But there is a stark difference to how fandom treats him compared to the other men in the story.
And I don't mean in the sense of "he deserved what he got/he deserved so much better" discourse that surrounds him, but how fandom understands him.
Depending on where you fall, the degree of SJ's childhood trauma could range from demeaning slavery with a historically usual amount of abuse and demands to underage sexual abuse and torture. Regardless, the common thread is that men have control over his autonomy. Men (and nobility) dictate what he does, how he dresses, what he will receive, and how others percieve him. This is something SJ does not escape, even when he becomes a Peak Lord, although the degree has lessened by this time. He fails not just because of his actions, but due to the words and judgement of people who only see him on surface level and, thus, scrutinise his every action as "evidence" to their preconceived judgement.
And boy does fandom run with this!
And it makes sense because, a huge portion of danmei demographics are women... Women who understand all too well the dangers a negative statement can have on their livlihood.
This is why Shen Jiu is female coded, to me. Qui Jianluo, Wu Yanzi, Yue Qingyuan, Luo Binghe, even Shen Yuan, etc etc all, in some way, have taken his autonomy. QJL and WYZ did it with their abuse and power over him, YQY did it by undermining him and placating him (while allowing the bad rumours and his bad behaviours to persist), LBH through his revenge (literally crippled him), Shen Yuan quite literally takes over his body and has no regard for its treatment for most of the story.
In fandom, I think its telling that Qi Qingqi, Mu Qingfan, and Liu Qingge also feature as a prominent antaongist that contribute to Shen Jiu's abysmal reputation. Unfortunately, the three kinds of people women should feel protected by and safe with- other women, doctors, and those who uphold justice- are some of the main contributors to the problems they face. They aren't taken seriously, they're ostracised or put down, they're ignored or labeled as over emotional.
Its also telling that, for most fanfics/discussions/art/etc where Shen Jiu is "redeemed" or given a second chance, the main reason why he suceeds is because others listen to him. They let him have a voice and respect it. He is able to advocate for himself and not be torn down or turned away. And if he is, usually there's a man that stands by his side and acts as the "ally" or "bridge" that gets people taking him seriously.
Or, him being attached to a well-respected man is enough for people to change their opinions. Fandom can't help but reflect real life in their works.
So, with all that being said... I understand that there's going to be people who think this is a "bad take" because I rely so heavily on how the fandom portrays Shen Jiu, and that's fine. There will always be Bible-thumpers in every piece of media we consume, and they're here for good reason. But I consume stories for the feelings they evoke and the influence they have on others. People make connections, that's just what we do, and this is the connection I made.

Hiii I saw you were doing snippets so I wanted to drop by. Hope you're doing okay <3
Here's an idea: Shen Jiu adopting a spirit wolf. (It's the wolf who adopted SJ but shhh) Maybe SJ managed to get away from WYZ after burning the Qiu's and happened to cross paths with one.
It’s the eyes that he sees first.
Large. Silver. Peering from the shadows where even the hallowed touch of moonlight does not dare to sweep.
He should run.
He cannot.
After so long being deprived of everything but the bare minimum to keep him alive, his body is weak where it counts. He managed to escape the scene of his first murder. He managed to escape the clutches of the demonic cultivator that followed, hoping the drugging flowers he brewed into tea were strong enough to kill the man where his weak hands were not.
He is not stupid enough to believe he can escape the creature before him. Not when he hasn’t eaten in days, and the bones of his leg send fire through him with every jostle. Broken, after a tumble down the jagged ravine in the dark.
Shen Jiu always knew the world hated him- he did not think it so ironic to die like this. A pathetic beast, made a midnight dinner for a wolf.
That didn’t mean he intended to make it easy.
“Bring it on, then,” he hissed into the night, brandishing the largest stick his numb fingers could find. “Do your worst.”
A growl reverberated from the shadows, those bright, unblinking eyes moving as the creature stalked forward, its pelt shining as it stepped out into the light.
It was huge. From the wicked black claws on the tips of each paw to the glinting ivory of its teeth, the wolf was probably as large as a man. It tilted its head up, scenting the hair with a huff.
Even in the low light, Shen Jiu could see the hackles rise.
Shen Jiu braced to swing his branch as fervently as he could, and several things happened all at once.
A flash of steel came at him from one side.
An all too familiar shout echoed in the night.
And the wolf pivoted at the last moment, redirecting its lunge.
Wu Yanzi screamed as the canines of the beast tore into his skin, something dark splattering among the leaves and other debris of the forest floor. The sword he had attempted to fling at the young escapee thudded into the woods, thrown off course, and Shen Jiu pressed himself up against the trees until the painful howling of his latest captor fell to muffled struggles, and then silence.
His stick shook lightly in his hand.
He couldn’t run.
The wolf moved, hard to track in the darkness, with the low rustle of something dragging through the foliage. Away from Shen Jiu.
With a pained gasp, the teen rolled over, and began to drag himself away, claiming the sword that was left amid the roots along the way.
***
There’s a haze that comes with infection. Living on the streets, he’d learned to recognize it well, and now he can tell it’s come to visit him again.
His leg aches, angry and red with purple blotches after a day of struggling through the woods alone. So far, he has had no other trouble- only a brief encounter with a snake that was quickly handled with his stolen steel.
But he’s hungry. And it hurts, every time he struggles to push forward. If he laid his head down for just a moment, surely he can find the will to push further. Just for a moment…
Just… for a moment…
***
The branch whacks him in the face.
He startles awake with a curse, his leg throbbing in agony as he attempts to evade the attack, batting away his attacker with clumsy hands.
Something cracks in the brush above him, and Shen Jiu’s eyes dart up to meet another’s in the fading light of the sunset.
Large. Silver. Cloaked by swaths of sleek, white fur with a dark stripe down its ears and muzzle, and a patch on its forehead that looks strangely similar to a flower.
The wolf.
The great beast leaps from its place overhead, landing without hardly a sound, pacing a slow circle around him, its gaze too focused, too sharp.
“Come to finish the job, have you?” Shen Jiu snarls, baring his teeth. He has a sword now. He still can’t escape, but he could at least try to take the damn thing with him. Even with the dizziness that plagues him, he should at least be able to make it bleed.
He doesn’t expect to wolf to pick the aforementioned branch up in its teeth and throw it at him.
He splutters, throwing a hand up to guard his face even as something soft and smooth brushes against his wrist from within the bundle of leaves. Small white flowers dot the stems, and there, hidden in the center, is a cluster of plums.
Three of them, ripe and nearly bursting with flesh, practically begging to be eaten.
The wolf turns, and lopes away into the trees.
…The juice is sweet, and sticky where it clings to Shen Jiu’s chin.
***
His leg aches. He ignores it as best as he can, limping through the trees. Hunger does not gnaw at him so fiercely, but thirst has made its name known.
He finds a small stream, looking clear and clean enough. His body is weak as he all but dunks his head under, gulping down as much as he can stand without risking throwing it all back up.
After, he lays on the wide rocks of the bank, watching the sky wheel overhead as his body rebels once more.
He feels so hot, and cold, and sweaty, but it’s too dry and if he touches the water too much he’s going to die. Nothing quite makes sense and he can’t quite feel his own body anymore.
He’s so tired.
He wonders if this was the last experience he and Qi-ge would share- dying alone in the woods with no one there to care.
***
He wakes to something warm, and soft.
The scent of the woods surrounds him, pulls him close as his brother once did, whispering sweet dreams of far off freedoms and strength, and for the first time in a long time, Shen Jiu is slow to wake.
Let it be soft. Let it be warm. Let him have this, this one last mercy, before hell finds him once again.
The pulse of something safe, that latches on to that place hidden deep inside him, neither quite flesh nor phantasmal force.
Wu Yanzi had brushed against it, once, when he pretended to be a just and benevolent teacher. The roots that bound his spirit to his body.
His meridians.
He blinks his eyes open, one hand curling tight in the pale pelt that stretches next to him.
He blinks.
The wolf blinks back.
“If you’re going to follow me, that makes you mine,” Shen Jiu croaks. “That means I’m in charge and you have to do what I say.”
The pulse of qi he receives seems to be a happy agreement.
He allows the wolf to wiggle under him, lifting his small form onto its large back as it turns towards the heart of the woods.
He’s tired…
But… His leg doesn’t hurt anymore.

They get frustrated with each other at first, but then they clear the misunderstanding and make up

You know what's kinda messed up? That majority of the crimes Shen Jiu was accused of were either self-defense or just outright lies. The only ones that were true were him being an apprentice to a demonic cultivator and his abuse of LBH. The first could just be explain away as heresy because the accuser was the fiance who litterly owned him (and was pretty much unconscious majority of the event, so for all she knew WYZ could have been the one who killed her family to kidnap SJ for his potential), and the other is something that no one would care or really take seriously at all considering the time period.
The only reason his claims of abuse were treated as severely as they were was because of all the accusations that were piled on and because it was SJ. If it wasn't for these two factors, LBH claims would have been dismissed, and he would have been seen as an unfilial disciple who couldn't handle the life of a hardworking cultivator. (Considering how well he was being treated by the OPM and Huan Hua, the riches sect may I add, it would paint him as someone who simply wanted a life of luxury rather than hard work. He would have been victim blamed and shamed so hard it would be considered gaslighting).
The point I'm trying to make is that if Luo Binghe accused someone else who wasn't Shen Jiu, his very valid claims of abuse would have been brushed off and dismissed. And that's fucked up man.
