I am mostly interested in fics with depressed Lan Zhan who refuses to speak to anyone and/or gives up on his duties afterwards and just wastes away in that cave (instead of whatever he was supposed to be doing during those three years). It can even have suicide attempt or running away attempt. Thank you.

As someone who was hella confused about a question an anon asked few days ago that why lwj wasn't there for wwx in his previous life, I did some research and found few details and this is never that lwj was bounded by laws of his sect or his propriety. I would ask you to please post this.

one moral of mdzs is to not forcibly adhere to societal expectations or get caught up in what others think of you; rather, accept that everyone is an individual/idiosyncratic. this aligns w/ 1 interpretation of 无为 wuwei—a daoist concept—which is to act as comes naturally to you. when your behavior is influenced by outside pressures dictating how you are "supposed to" or "expected to" behave, that's not 无为 wuwei. that becomes behavior with intention, and that intentionality (or 为) causes you to act in a way that is counter to your most natural self. This is what plays out in lwj's character development, because I think he adheres to a different interpretation of 无为 wuwei during wwx's first life (I will refer to him as first-life lwj). The other interpretation of 无为 wuwei I'm referring to is "non-action," ie not interfering with human affairs or secular matters. eg disputes, wars. this is why the quintessential (and even ideal) daoist is a hermit secluding themselves from society in the mountains. hence, bssr. First-life lwj's (non)action is his adherence to one interpretation of daoist morality. his name 忘机 wangji is itself a daoist term analogous to 无为 wuwei. it's a reminder not to act with intention, not to manipulate situations for personal interests (as an aside, to quickly address takes where people view first-life lwj as "not moral" because he doesn't actively intervene to help wwx save the wens—No. This concept stems from an issue of applying western morality to a character adhering to specific eastern morals). We can assume lwj has always (naturally) been above involving himself in petty disputes. enter wwx, who flies in the face of all that. wwx is the embodiment of doing what comes naturally to him (for the most part). suddenly, lwj can't stop himself from acting and getting involved like when he fights wwx on the rooftop, when he kisses him on mt baifeng. and lwj is angry with himself when it happens, because even these actions go against his understanding of 无为 wuwei—but those are all part of his most natural self, which he is holding backcut to when wwx returns. Then we see the stark difference between 1st- & 2nd-life lwj. He has no qualms about taking wwx back, or when he acts, because these actions are what comes naturally to him. His understanding of 无为 wuwei has evolved from "non-action" to "effortless action." This is not to say self-restraint can't be natural to lwj. In many ways it is. But before, lwj was holding himself back from certain actions due to outside forces. Now, if he holds back, it's not because he has to—it's because he wants to, and chooses to for himself.

Thank you for this context, and this makes sense from my own fledgling understanding of Taoism and how it's portrayed by mxtx in her novels. I still have to disagree though. You are basing your understanding of how this concept plays into Lan Wangji's character off of the mistaken idea that Lan Wangji did not do anything in Wei Wuxian's first life and, thus, experienced a change from his death that is expressed in Wei Wuxian's second life.

I am saying this is wrong.

Lan Wangji did not believe in non-intervention in Wei Wuxian's first life, and we aren't given any indication that this is the case unless one is taking his disdain for politics and the immorality of his fellow cultivators into account. Lan Wangji not fucking with these things does not mean that he cut himself off from the world. There is a reason he's called Hanguang-jun, a title he earned from the people for his intervention in their issues that other cultivators and cultivation clans routinely ignored. He was given this title during Wei Wuxian's first life, during the war in fact, and we are shown the origins of this behavior through the Lotus Seed Pod Extra. And while Wei Wuxian was the catalyst for this event, to say that Lan Wangji believed in non-intervention before this moment would be like arguing that Wei Wuxian was a non-interventionalist before he married Lan Wangji and decided to "go where the chaos was" with him.

In Wei Wuxian's first life, Lan Wangji:

helped farmers with the ghost making mischief

defended his home when the other Lan cultivators stood down to the Wen invasion

defended Mianmian when the other cultivators shied away from her, even knocking back a Lan outer disciple who tried to go around him to hand her over to Wen Chao

participated in a war

made time to help the common people during said war, earning his title

physically defended Wei Wuxian against Jin Zixuan's attack during the Phoenix Mountain hunt

spoke up for Wei Wuxian during the Jin banquet after Wei Wuxian leaves to find Wen Ning

publicly spoke up for Wei Wuxian during the emergency conference after the liberation of the Qiongqi Path labor camp, even though he is said to rarely attend

helped Wei Wuxian restore Wen Ning's conscience

publicly spoke in defense of the Wen siblings during their sham trial

everything he did during Nightless City and its aftermath

Lan Wangji isn't upset at himself for kissing Wei Wuxian because it goes against some idea of "non-interventionalism;" he's upset because he sees himself as falling into the same behavior that his father may have been engaged in that trapped his mother. We know this because he confesses these feelings to Lan Xichen! And then Lan Xichen tells us the story of his parents through Wei Wuxian! The kiss itself is not the problem! Worldly desires are not his problem!!!

Lan Wangji has been just as much an embodiment of "effortless action" as Wei Wuxian has, but because he continues to adhere to a set of personal behaviors that were ingrained in him in childhood, fandom takes that as "he must be strictly bound by x thing." He's not. Fandom also thinks that because Wei Wuxian still died in the end and no character acknowledges how Lan Wangji helped him in his first life, that "must" mean that Lan Wangji didn't do enough/didn't do anything at all. This is also not true. Lan Wangji lives his life how he wants to, always has from the time he was young, and he has always wanted to help those in need when he can, both loved ones and strangers alike. His (in)action is not the reason why Wei Wuxian died any more than Wei Wuxian's own actions are the reason why he died. The cultivation world, 98% of all individuals in it including most of the named characters, were corrupt. Expecting a single person to be able to change the course of this story lest it be regarded as him "not having tried" is nonsensical.

Instead of arguing that "Lan Wangji had xyz reason why he didn't actually help," why don't we try discussing why 98% of the cast championed genocide and how placing their sins on the back of one (1) person for not stopping it absolves them of their own willful actions in gleefully slaughtering an entire clan for existing.

Modern!Xicheng AU

LXC only knows JWY from hearing about him. He has yet to meet him but he already knows, he will Hate him with a passion! No! He already DOES!

The first time he hears about him, is from a complaining A-Yao. Apparently everytime he tries to do something with HIS nephew, the kid only ever talks about his other uncle! It’s always ˋjuijui did....´, ˋjuijui said...´, ˋbut juijui thinks...´. And if it’s not that, then he swears?! Which he learned around his ˋjuijuí. What kind of person teaches A CHILD swear words?!?! And if that weren’t enough, he apparently declared himself to be ˋJL´s Favourite and best uncle ´! LXC met JL only a few times, when he was visiting but A-YAO was certainly not lying nor understating. If he wouldn’t have to constantly hear the complains about it he might have even thought it cute.

The second person and most surprising was his own brother. He certainly didn’t like JWY either. LWJ, in his own way, mentions here and there how this JWY keeps insulting WWX, aka HIW OWN BROTHER?!?! And on top of it THEIR RELATIONSHIP?! Yeah no. LXC has never born this much dislike for anyone and CERTAINLY not someone he has never even met. But here he is.

To top it all of, this guy is apparently in one of his uncles classes and he- he somehow became his uncles FAVOURITE Student?! He has never even heard of his uncle having had a favourite anything and certainly not a student?!?! And since he joined his class he is all LQR talks about ! It is INFURIATING! LWJ even left the table at a particular conversation!

At this point he is fine never meeting this horrible, no good guy, who teaches little kids to swear, insults his own brother but is somehow his uncles golden child ? Yeah no. He prepares himself to just punch that guy in the face on sight.

But then ..one by one all of those things are set into place: JWY drops by at LQR house to bring him some important papers while latter is sick and LXC is caring for him. They clearly talk about some of the more advanced topics, they shouldn’t even be discussing yet but JC understands perfectly. Additionally it turns out JC lives at the other end of the town though. This doesn’t really fit with the rest of the picture.

A while later, LXC is picking up his brother at WWX flat, where “the door is open! Just come in!” And he catches JWY in his full angry flirting, LWJ has talked about so much… only to completely side with said ball of anger. Cause he too would not want to see his brother heavily making out with his boyfriend on THEIR shared couch. Damn it. And the fact that both LWJ and JWY clearly dislike each other because of their mutual love and goodwill for WWX? Yeah great. He can’t hate someone wanting what’s best for their brother and being frustrated to not seeing eye to eye with that. Cause to be fair, he himself has had his doubts about WWX being good for LWJ. Double dammit.

And finally, they’re at a big family gathering with the Lans, Jiangs and the Jins, and he hates to disagree with his best friend since for ever but he finally see why little JL prefers and loves his “juijui” so much. And also that JL learned bad words bc JWY was yelling at WWX …wich … fair ? But don’t tell LWJ.

You can choose wether JC has been completely oblivious of LXCs hatred all this time, bc he was so busy with all the other people OR if he has been very aware of it and intentionally went out of his way to not meet him again as to “not have another person hate me, WWX. I can’t deal with that right now.”

Wei WuXian walked toward the rendezvous point that he and Lan WangJi were supposed to meet at. Nobody walked among the sparse lights that flickered in the night. Without having to look around, the white-robed figure stood at the end of the street, standing motionless with his head hung low. Before Wei WuXian made any sound, Lan WangJi looked up and saw him. After some hesitation, he walked over with a darkened expression. Wei WuXian didn’t know why, but he involuntarily took a step backward. He could almost see scarlet streaks of blood by the corners of Lan WangJi’s eyes. He had to admit… Lan WangJi’s face really did look quite scary. (Chapter 24)

This section is utterly murdering me.

In an "oh, this is an actual peek at how LWJ is actually handling the early days after WWX comes back to life" kind of way.

You have to understand: WWX has been trying to escape him ever since they met again (under the unfounded fear that LWJ would go after him if he knew who WWX actually is).

Wei WuXian originally wanted to sneak away during their expedition off the mountain. However, even though he attempted to run away multiple times, it always ended with Lan WangJi carrying him back with one hand holding the back of his collar. (Chapter 20)

One can argue about how much of an actual effort WWX was putting into the entire escaping ordeal, but the fact remains that LWJ has been stopping him consistently enough it's no secret. LWJ, however, doesn't have a way to know that's why WWX is avoiding him. Hell, he probably thinks it has something to do with his own feelings given the events of the previous life, which is heartbreaking all in itself.

The pace of the conversation was extremely fast. Lan WangJi only paused for a moment, and Wei WuXian added, “Go. Any later and the person would have run away. I’ll be back!” Hearing the ‘I’ll be back’, Lan WangJi took one deep look at him and walked off without any more words. (Chapter 23)

(The translation I'm reading in another language makes the "I'll be back" be "I'll be back for sure." I can't tell which is the more accurate translation, but I thought it relevant to point out.)

However, in this moment, WWX asks them to act separately (something LWJ has been actively avoiding) and does so with the promise to meet up with him again. LWJ seems to hesitate, but ultimately chooses to trust WWX and does as he says.

And then, with his task over, he reaches the spot they're supposed to meet at. The hours pass and WWX is nowhere to be seen. By the time WWX gets there, LWJ is looking down with his eyes bloodshot, stuck in place, waiting ever so patiently for him but clearly not in a good space of mind. The intensity of his whole demeanor takes WWX aback, at least until LWJ realizes WWX is hurt and the turmoil is replaced by concern, but.......

It has been hours. He has been having to keep an active eye on WWX so he doesn't escape for a few weeks at the very least. He finally decides to trust WWX, to separate for efficiency's sake for a short while, and he probably believed himself the fool for it. That he, by some miracle, got a second chance with the man he loves and that man rejected him even as a friend in the single, most backhanded way possible.

As happy as he must be to have WWX back, there's no way LWJ in the early parts of the novel is having a good time. Most likely, he spends 90% of the time second guessing WWX's very, very confusing behavior towards him. And, at this specific point, I feel he's actually nearly at his limit. His position is so frail, after all, having to impose his presence on the other to be even given a chance and, for a moment there, he's likely to have believed it all a lost cause once again.

Headcanon about LWJ's character Arc.

Alright, this will be controversial. Feel free to share your thoughts. Do you think Wangxian would have married in a no War AU? Let me rephrase it. Would LWJ, pre-Sun Shot Campaign LWJ, that didn't experience neither War nor desperation. That was taught about his parent's history, and how love destroyed them both. That LWJ, that followed all 3000 rules and obeyed his elders.

If he was pressured to take a wife. Do you think he'd have agreed?

His one first true act of rebellion, I believe, is when he opposed his 33 elders and brought WWX to the Demon Slaughtering Cave. And afterwards, even then, he submitted to punishment. How did his sect drag him back to Gusu to get whipped, if he was able to both fight them off and protect WWX? How so? Well, they didn't manage to drag him back. The only explanation is that he went voluntarily.

Oh, he did what a good disciple did. He obeyed the rules, and if he didn't, he submitted to punishment afterwards, like he did his whole life. WWX's life mattered, but so did his duty. He tried to have it both ways, and as result he wasn't there when WWX died.

It's only afterwards that LWJ really took a stand, by choosing to raise an orphan despite his clan's protests. For the first time, finally. Or at last, that's how I understood his character arc.

So no, without this character arc, in a no War AU, there would have been no Wangxian, because, well LWJ wouldn't have fought for him. At all. Or perhaps he'd also try to have it both ways, by both marrying the woman his elders chose, and keeping WWX as his lover/concubine.

This is why JYL will always be special in my heart. For she always stood by WWX. My point is, while the potential was there, goody two shoes LWJ needed a serious reality check before raising the middle fingers to nonsensical rules. He needed to see, with is own two eyes, what is the justice of the sects and decide that it's not HIS justice, he'll take no part in it. I think WWX's death is the last straw, before learning to stop backtracking halfway. Let's not forget he tried to help WWX on the Burial Mounds without condemning firmly what happened. He let his clan save face, while visiting and buying a-Yuan toys in the market. It's like visiting a Nike workshop and giving candies to children, LWJ has good intentions but ultimately he does nothing to really help. The LWJ that grieved 13 years? HE would have told both his sect & the world to go fuck themselves and stayed by WWX's side.

lan wangji never once thought wei wuxian was in the wrong for defying the cultivation world to protect the wens. the whole time, he believed wwx was in the right, and yet he was unable to do anything to save his love, whether by choice or circumstance. i think reading between the lines to see his regret for not fighting by wwx's side earlier is foundational to understanding his motivations for choosing to be someone who appears wherever there's chaos, and what made him fall in love with wwx in the first place. "do what you know you cannot," the jiang clan precept that wwx embodies, meaning to simply do the right thing, without thinking of gain and loss. isnt that what it means to be free and have a clear conscience? lwj, someone whose upbringing was characterized by restraint and repression, sees wwx's courage and daring and admires him for it. he chooses to honor wwx's memory by materially helping the common people, freely doing the good he always longed to do. love is liberating to lwj, even after everything he's suffered, because it was never about being rewarded. in a novel full of people whose grief makes them worse, lwj chooses to be better

So I find it super odd that Wei Ying seems to always recognize LWJ without seeing him by the scent of sandalwood, but somehow when LWJ is all up in his nostrils kissing him while he's punned against the tree, he can't smell the telltale scent for some reason? Oooh! I love this question! Well, this is actually something my friends and I have discussed previously and I found it all so fascinating. Especially as, when one sense is lost (his sight, being blindfolded), the others are meant to be heightened!

So, the reason WWX cannot smell that usual sandalwood scent on LWJ when they are so close is actually because MXTX very cleverly set the scene up just so, prior to this.

As Wei Wuxian played his flute, he dangled one leg, letting it sway idly beneath him. The tip of his boot brushed the wild grass beneath the tree, and he paid no mind when it became damp with the morning dew that had gathered on the fresh green grass.

Having finished his tune, he settled back on the tree, crossing his arms and shifting into a more comfortable position. His flute was tucked between his arms, and the flower diffused a faint, cool fragrance from where it was still pinned by his heart.

That gorgeous dewy grass scent, the fragrant flower and the fact they are outside in an open space with the wind perhaps hindering his senses a little - all perfect conditions to hide that sandalwood scent. I just adore how meticulously planned the scene was that MXTX even carefully covered LWJ's trademark aroma!

Just to cover all bases here... I have seen some people point out that WWX never actually mentions LWJ smelling of sandalwood until his second life and use this as the reasoning for not noticing the scent - which is true, he never explicitly states as such. But! He obviously noticed it. As I have mentioned in previous meta on the scent of sandalwood and WWXs emotional reaction to it, he's only just come back to life and he's already commenting on how LWJ's always smells like this and how the scent seemed to "tugged at his heartstrings" - showing us he remembers LWJ smelling of sandalwood and his subconscious feelings for him at the same time.

So there you have it anon, MXTX just set the perfect scene to ensure WWX could not outright guess it was LWJ ☺️

Okay after a few more rounds of reading JC fics I am ready to choose my favourite JC ships.

1. SangCheng- JC is thriving and happy and retains his positive character while dealing with Huisang antics also he has enough space to be rough and tsundere without damage.

2. ChengYao- co parenting brought them closer or made them hate each other until they fell in love. I like when they fight for Jin Ling affection but then end up sharing affection with each other. Absolutely adorable!!! Not enough fics, I need more!!!!!

3. ChengNing- pain!!! Just pain!!! Also I have seen some interesting takes on their relationship before, again not enough fics for it. But I did like the few I read. This was also my first ship I came up with for JC because.

1. XiCheng- not gonna lie I have always been a little iffy on it, since the first few fics I read where on twt for it and they didn't have tags so I got very upset by the end of it- HE WOULD NOT SAY OR DO THAT!

And sorry but after that barely any fic could make them work for me.

2. WangCheng- no serious reason I just don't think there's anyone but WWX for LWJ. I am fine with it if WWX is involved but even that doesn't exactly make me love it. I do get annoyed with it at times as well. Idk why...

Oh by the way this isn't a testament of skills of any shipper or fic writer. Just the way I vibe with ships. Not a personal attack either if anyone ships these ships.

Remember the morally grey Wei Wuxian tag? Yeah, that line at the top is what I meant by that. I don’t think Wei Wuxian would ever be morally grey, he’s the most morally upright character I have ever come across, but just for this fic, as long as it’s Lan Wangji vs the world, Wei Wuxian would always choose Lan Wangji, even if it conflicts with his moral and principles. Putting it simply, Wei Wuxian would condemn murder and harming the innocents, but if it’s Lan Wangji committing these crimes, he wouldn’t be able to bring himself to condemn him, instead, he’ll come up with possible justifications for Lan Wangji and defend him.

I hope I was able to capture an inkling, an essence of this in the chapter.

Also, is anyone surprised that no Lan elders except Lan Qiren are furious at Lan Wangji's wantonness? I just think that after the whole Qingheng-jun fiasco, they will think Lan Wangji much more tame, especially since Wei Wuxian, unlike the Madam Lan in my head, doesn't seem too bothered by their second heir's behavior. Maybe they are even turning a blind eye to this because of how much they love Wei Wuxian and his genius.

My thought process behind their thought process is that- since Wei Wuxian is a once in a lifetime genius and he is here (in cloud recesses) because of Lan Wangji and he is staying because of his obvious love for their second heir, and they know this. They can see this. So, just for the sake of keeping Wei Wuxian in their sect as their prized disciple who is famous all around for his no-less-than-miraculous inventions, they all collectively decide to overlook Lan Wangji's shameless behaviour that is definitely not befitting of someone holding the title of the Second Jade of GusuLan.

Of course, no one added Lan Qiren to the group chat and that's why he's still bitter about his nephew's changed behaviour.

They do a series of challenges and Lan Zhan basically tricks Wei Wuxian into completing them/qualifying. At one point, the candidates have to go through this maze, and Wei Wuxian gets 'kidnapped' and dumped in the maze and finds his way out really fast out into a hall where everyone is just like 'how the hell did he get in there and come out so fast?' and Lan Zhan uses that to show the council/elders that Wei Wuxian is a perfectly acceptable choice while WWX is just confused as always. 10. Hello I was suggested to seek help here to find fics that I have been trying to find for a really really long time. I hope you could help me with them.

A. The fic was set post canon where Lan Wangji seemed to have lost his memory of WWX and Wei Wuxian tries to help him get his memory back. This seems to be a common premise but what resonated me about the fic was that there was a use of a song to cure the memory loss and the song required lots of energy and thus Wei Wuxian had decided to play the song in parts and Wangxian navigate around eachother as LWJ slowly gets his memory back in snippets.

B. This one is set in post canon as well but this focuses much more on the relationship of Wei Wuxian with Lan Sizhui and Jin Ling. In this fic it seems that Wei Wuxian tends to favour Lan Sizhui above anyone else and thus Jin Ling gets jealous at this prospect. I don't remember many finer details of the story besides these.

I really like to read all your metas. And I was hoping if you would write a meta on classism and its effect on the world of mdzs and on the different characters of mdzs?

Classism is just something that plays a huge part in mdzs, and it's such a shame that not many people can understand how big of a deal it is.

The way Wei Wuxian combats how he is treated in the gentry will always be awe-inspiring to me. How he always rises up even though most would push him down. Not many fanfics write about this struggle and instead focus on fix-its (gosh, it's so annoying just because of how they're written). Those fix-its don't understand how the cultivation world works at all, they think just making Wei Wuxian change a decision will make the world a better place but it's not!

I don’t have a classism meta on mdzs, specifically, but I do have one on classism as a theme across all mxtx novels: here. Ultimately, the thing that the mdzs fandom (and the others, too) tend to get wrong about the classism convo is that they falsely believe that certain characters are good or evil based on class status and that everything would be resolved if everyone was a part of the “good” economic class because the “bad” economic class makes it impossible for people to be good. It’s where you get arguments like “wwx is only a good person because he was “raised rich,” while jgy and xy were never given the chance. If they had been raised rich, they would’ve been good, too!” or “lwj can afford to be a good person because he’s a clan heir, unlike wwx who had to struggle.”

This blatantly ignores how characters across the class spectrum share or have opposing moralities, even amongst those with similar backgrounds. A major theme in mdzs is that people should stand up for what’s right even if they do not gain approval or favors from their peers or superiors for doing so. Mianmian is a servant who rejects discipleship under the clan that employed her after having her position elevated, just to do the right thing. Lan Wangji is a great clan heir who rejects his family’s stance on morality because his clan was wrong. Both had different difficulties to face due to their circumstances but still made the same moral decision. Mxtx characters have autonomy and choose when to do right or wrong, and nothing about their class status changes that.

hi! i always love your MDZS/CQL takes; can i ask what are the questions you think CQL is asking, as compared to MDZS?

I haven't actually revisited either canon in ages, which is making me nervous. what questions the novel is interested in can be pretty contentious all on its own! @mikkeneko has an excellent answer in the notes here which I reccomend to everyone. My own thoughts are honestly pretty scattered- I keep on deleting things and going hm, that's not quite right.

So, for the obvious-to-me example, people reasonably zero in on the creation of innocent doctors/radish farmers who Wen Ruohan is holding hostage. In CQL it's easy to infer that Wen Qing and Wen Ning are maybe the only cultivators and almost certainly the only combatants among the Wen remnants, and their status is much more ambiguous in the novel, which I personally think is asking, essentially, "and so what? were they wrong to run, when they had a chance? Do they deserve what Jin Guangshan will do to them if they go back? Aren't they just people, actually?" Whereas the question that CQL is asking is more to the effect of "What does Wen Qing owe these people, when she is their only defence? What is she entitled to do to save them, at other people's expense? If she fucks up that moral calculus, what then? Does it matter if she's personally fond of some of the outsiders who are going to get hurt? If one of them saved her brother? Later, this question will flip to what Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng, and the parallel to Jiang Cheng's situation in particular is, I think, genuinely pretty fun. You're giving up the Wen as soldiers who've laid down their arms in exchange for Wen Qing also grappling with leadership and the question of how many horrors she can stand to look the other way on to protect her own people. one reason I keep deleting so much is that a lot cql's changes were motivated at least in part by censorship, which I think we mostly share a general and justified distaste for! but I also think that within the bounds of that censorship the creative team put a lot of work into actually doing something interesting with those changes. Or, for another example- nieyao! There's a much greater emphasis on the nmj-jgy relationship, it's unambiguously very close and they are clearly extremely important to one another, and I think that's because the cql team has a lot to say about love, trust, power, and the ways those things interact, and that reflects back on all of the other relationships in play, including Wangxian. Almost every time, when CQL chooses change a relationship they make the characters in question closer- that's true for Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji, for Wen Qing and the Yunmeng contingent, for Zixuan and Mianmian, and Huaisang and Meng Yao. It's even true for Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian, who have a close and trusting relationship in first life! CQL puts a much greater emphasis on "all right, so you care, what next?" How do you choose someone and then choose to be good to them? What if there's a massive power disparity between you? What if you seriously disagree about your priorities and morals? How do you trust someone who's betrayed you? When is it a stupid choice to trust at all? How do you have faith that you know someone well enough for that trust to be meaningful?

for legal reasons i would like to specify that it's not that mdzs isn't interested in these problems. i do remember wangxian's literal trust fall. cql is asking these questions all the time about everyone. also for legal purposes i'm not suggesting that cql lwj and jc love each other. but! they establish a three month wartime partnership looking for wwx and then jc immediately drops him on wwx's say-so despite apparently having a positive enough opinion of him to tell wwx he thinks they should make up twice. lan wangji will later tell wwx he thinks he should loop jc in on the second flautist! these are people trying to navigate some kind of relationship/shared interest/community, as opposed to a hateful void. cql wants to say hey, how do you go about this? while I'm here and rambling cql also puts a lot of emphasis on wwx's connection to yunmeng and changes things up so instead of feeling alienated right before he leaves our last glimpse of him there is happily picking lotuses and playing with a kid! in both stories the narrative is asking who do you protect? who do you leave behind? can you ever get it back? but the angles are very different.

Whenever I think silly ideas I default to cumplane because they’re ridiculous and them quoting memes wwhile nobody knows what they mean will never not be funny to me. I mean, imagine explaining a meme without the internet! Bonus points if some of them start picking up on how to use the memes without knowing the context.

A friend of mine told me about a svsss au they don’t intend to write where Shen Jiu is a strict teacher and Shen yuan is the TA that grades his students papers so LBH and SY end up communicating through notes and doodles :)

Not really that fluffy but Any Hualian time travel or truth serum. There’s like, one truth serum fic in the TGCF fandom that’s good and Xie Lian has both so many secrets and also the sassiest thoughts. Also Xie Lian and Hua Cheng meeting while still alive (and possibly ascending together??).

I would also like to direct you to this post and this post because some aforementioned things are there but also various other ideas that could work. It was an idea day and today isn’t (unfortunately)

Any scenario in which anyone gets drunk. Literally pick a character and choose how they embarrass themselves and regret their decisions in the morning. Xie Lian could harp on about the dirty things he keeps to himself as well as insulting *so* many people, Hua Cheng could be very soft and emotional but also really kind and ends up giving so many compliments even to Feng Xin and mu qing (much to their shock and amusement) speaking of mu Qing, get him wasted. My man has so many emotions and unnecessary thoughts. Cuddle the man and make him laugh. I think he’d be a little more insecure openly but also happier. We’ve seen LWJ drunk but imagine wwx drunk. Idk if that’d be angsty or not but up to you. I think he’d be soft and VERY cuddly. Half of what he says is completely nonsensical but the other half is very sweet. Binghe would be clingy and Shen Yuan would probably be singing some modern pop song with airplane (who is equally wasted).

Outing myself here but non-explicit abo is probably one of my fav types of fluff. Idk something about people being intensely cuddly while surrounded by soft things and being incredibly vulnerable always gets me. Like, ‘nope, you’re mine to cuddle for the rest of the week. Live with it.’

Chatfics are my preferred crackfics because hell hath no chaos like a bunch of people smushed together in a gc with naming privileges and being unable to leave. Bonus points if it’s in high school so there’s extra drama and humor. Imagine Hua Cheng and Xie Lian haven’t confessed but everyone else knows? Hilarious. Mu Qing and Feng Xin fighting in the halls (again) over something stupid and getting suspended? Hilarious. SQX being girlfriends with HX and going on dates (they had a rough start with their relationship because Shi Wudu pulled some shit that was NOT run past SQX which led to a lot of difficulties but eventually they did become friends again and eventually lovers.)

Anyhow that’s all I can think of. I also had some fluffy-ish ideas for losing hope if you want those ;3
