Jackal Queenston was an alias under the Halley Labs label. He is a hybrid of a jackal and a German shepherd, who was often seen smoking and wearing attire originally inspired by the Nazi Party and other WW-II era uniforms, as time went on, JQ's outfit would slightly change to reflect less of its original appearance, with the Nazifur symbol being replaced with an X as a homage to Metal Slug, to the armband and hat badge being completely removed. He typically produced drum and bass, characterized by heavy bass lines, fast drum breaks, and dark themes alluding to violence or power.

Jackal Queenston originally debuted as a new character for the Mungyodance series, with songs first appearing in an official Addon Pak for MGD 2 and then MGD 3: The Third Rave, released on August 23, 2008. His first album, Rise, included several songs originally made for the Addon Pak.

Due the rise of Neo-Nazism on the internet, no possibility to redesign this character without connection to offensive content, and the restrictions of the alias's sound, Jackal Queenston was retired around the end of 2020.

Jackal Queenston is 5'7" and weighs 150 lbs. [citation needed]

The 'X' insignia seen on Jackal's armband is an homage to the Rebel Army from the video game Metal Slug.

This change was made by Squeedgemonster, who eventually removed the armband in other art. Em agreed to these changes. [1]

Before Squeedge's Metal Slug homage, in older artwork it is seen that Em wanted Jackal's armband to have an paw insignia, depicting that Jackal is a Nazi Fur.

Jackal's markings used to be that of a golden jackal, but were changed later on to show more resemblance to a German Shepherd.

Jackal may hold the record for songs that were later attributed to another alias, with Amber Starlight (re-attributed to The Queenstons), Sleep Tight (re-attributed to Adraen), Soulcrusher + Heartsifter (both re-attributed to G-DARIA, Darius' stylistic predecessor. They were originally collaborations with Sonitus Vir). Poison & After Effect (both re-attributed to Azrael, as collaborations between the two), and My Wolf Eats Preps (re-attributed to Renard). Humanoid was originally a Jackal song (It is still available on ON Trax Vol. 1), but it was later re-released with vocals on The Queenstons' album Figurehead.

okay, it took me way longer than it should have to figure out what happened in this scene, lol. razlo gets behind elendira and blocks her nail gun with the nail that's already in his body which jams her gun and pushes the nail further into his torso which takes them both by surprise.

i love watching razlo fight!!! it's so fun seeing him fight a different way due to not having his punishers/third arm anymore. he's having so much fun too, it's infectious~

*returns 30 minutes later* HUH. INTERESTING. so stampede shows us livio working hard in EoM to catch up with wolfwood, but in the manga, it's all but outright stated that he's trying to catch up with razlo.

sorry i'm just fascinated by the tristamp/manga differences and seeing younger livio doing pushups reminded me (stamp!livio does pushups the same way!!)

we're not supposed to know that razlo exists yet in tristamp; i wonder if or how season 2 is going to reframe any of this. it's not like i dislike livio and wolfwood's relationship in stampede!! i think it's really sweet, introducing livio into ww's story earlier is a good move, and livio joining EoM to catch up with ww makes everything in the relevant episodes more emotional. but the relationship between livio and razlo is just as important!!

OH BOY, HE'S FERAL!!! truly, he is going out in a blaze of glory just like he wanted. i wouldn't expect anything else from him at this point.

ahhh... stampede!legato talks a lot about discarding emotion in favor of devotion. but emotion and devotion are intrinsically linked. legato is a pretty emotional person, he cries a lot and yells a lot... as long as he can express his devotion to knives, he feels like he's fulfilling his purpose, so he's happy... i'm glad he's having fun at least... :')

WAAAAHHH VASH IS REMEMBERING WOLFWOOD NOW... his face is not quite visible but... vash is remembering wolfwood's words because he's thinking he really is going to have to kill legato to end this fight... killing legato just like in the 98 anime...

i get caught up in the action, but every time they bring wolfwood up i realize how much i miss him...

To be fair, some of the comic books that I bundled together were very slim, so I'm probably inflating my final count... but I remember and enjoyed every one of them, so they count to me >:)

Looking back, there are so many books here associated with distinct memories. I remember reading Howl on the plane from LA. I remember exactly where I sat at the kitchen counter reading Rodin's Facebook-style rant about cathedrals (and thoroughly enjoying it, it felt like sitting in his studio!). I dragged my boyfriend to the local ramen place after reading Ms. Koizumi. I still get angry about the translator's note at the end of the Rilke book that I picked up in Beloit lol (okay those translators LITERALLY deleted multiple lines from a poem that they translated because THEY DIDN'T LIKE THE CONCEPT THAT RILKE HAD ADDED THERE. I understand translation can require some creative interpretation but they COMPLETELY ALTERED the poem to better suit their taste, deliberately denying Rilke's intent, and called it translation. UGHHH)

I want to read a lot more Virginia Woolf - To the Lighthouse was a vision! She's a genius and has stolen my heart.

I also want to return to Proust; finally check out Eliot, Shelley, Byron, Milton, etc beyond Tumblr snippets; conquer The Ambassadors; continue to pursue Dostoevsky, Yeats, LeGuin - I've got a taste and I want more!

Last year I was afraid of taking on too much. Now I'm afraid to take on too little :) I suppose I'll still aim for at least 12 books finished in 2023, but with the intent of matching/surpassing 30.

Right now I'm reading Grief Lessons: Four Plays by Euripides, translated by Anne Carson. Just finished crying over Herakles. It wasn't the tragedy but Theseus' love that made me break.

I can't wait for what 2023 will bring! Happy New Year, everyone! <3

Review: Wonder Woman Vol 7: War-Torn

Series status: finished (this is 1 out of 3 volumes by this creative team but it continues on from the previous 6 volumes).

Recommended reading: New 52 WW, New 52 Justice League,

There’s enough exposition for this volume to work as a jumping on point for the Wonder Woman series. Reading Justice League could be useful for background on Diana’s relationship with the League members as they are featured heavily in War-torn. This is definitely recommended as there are many Justice League volumes and I’m not sure how the timelines of the two series sync up. (War-Torn was published between volume 6 and 7 of Justice League but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything for the timelines).

Premise: Diana is torn between responsibilities to her people and to the Justice League, as well as dealing with the fallout of her decisions which altered her life and Paradise Island in major ways.

* Honestly I would give it a 3 if not for the thing with a certain character but more on that later.  

Review:

Sometimes having low expectations is a good thing? I really wasn’t sure about this volume. Continuing with a series after a creative team change can be daunting. I loved the Azzarello/Chiang run so I took a break after finishing it, which I would recommend doing in general to make the change less jarring. Also, opinions on Meredith Finch’s run are mixed so I wasn’t exactly rushing to read it. (Even though I don’t give too much weight to how well-received a work is, I’m not completely impervious to negative opinions).

Overall it was fine. It’s a standard superhero story, not outstanding, not terrible, The conflict Diana feels was well realised and for the most part, she felt in character. I was a bit confused by her anger issues at the beginning. I have no issue with a female character being allowed to be angry and have flaws but it came out of nowhere (and her almost slicing poor Swamp Thing to bits was maybe a little much).

I have one big exception for the “it was fine” sentiment: the treatment of Donna Troy. She deserves better and I don’t understand the choice to bing her into the New 52 like this. At least her armour looks great?

The depiction of the Amazons and their negative feelings towards Diana were frustrating. I thought this was resolved in the previous story-arc and it wasn’t nuanced at all  I hate when Amazons are portrayed as extremist man-haters, this story was leaning into it. Even if it was only a fraction and not all of them.

I feel torn (!) about the art. On one hand, I love the details and the colours. There are some beautiful panels and pages throughout like the one above. Still, Diana looks jarringly young, probably the youngest I’ve seen in a series that wasn’t about her youth. Sure, this version of Diana is younger due to the New 52 restarting everything but she’s an adult. This portrayal makes her look demure in a way I don’t think fits the character and goes against the story’s depiction of a Wonder Woman who has already been through a lot. Maybe it’s a stylistic choice and David Finch always draws faces like this? Certainly, the characters don’t have a distinct look, many of the faces look similar and kind of weird sometimes.

I was worried about the too common over-sexualization of women before reading War-Torn. Mostly based on the main cover, which depicts Diana in a sexy pose, complete with the unrealistically arched back. Juxtaposed with her looking underage, it’s disquieting to be honest. I would say the covers are the worst of it (hello, issue 38 cover) but there are times when female characters look like they are posing instead of standing or fighting. A couple of panels could have been drawn more tastefully (example below) but on the whole, it’s not bad.

A final thought: it’s great to see Wonder Woman written by a woman. Obviously, that doesn’t mean the volume is going to be (or has to be) an outstanding achievement of feminism or feminist at all, just because the author is female. Honestly, I didn’t notice a change in this aspect compared to the previous volumes. I’ve seen complaints about Brian Azzarello’s run having sexist elements or bad female representation, but I don’t agree. I also heard the same about this run, so far I don’t agree with that either, other than the depiction of the Amazons I mentioned earlier in the review. (To be fair, the previous run had that too.)

Apparently, this is also Meredith Finch’s first time writing superhero comics and it’s good debut. I’ll be continuing on with the next two volumes (and not just because I already have them :D).
