Watching one of the recent Factually! episodes about unions and this woman is talking about 9/11 (she's a flight attendant) and how something that really changed her forever was watching her friends die--knowing exactly when they died, having it filmed from every angle possible because they were in the second plane--and then finding out that literal moments afterwards, while she and thousands of other people were still in shock, much less really letting themselves fully mourn yet, crisis capitalists were already discussing how this could be used to renegotiate flight attendant positions and mechanic positions.

Capitalism is a craven and disgusting system that loves to profit from tragedy.

9/11

9/11 was the main catalyst, in which the government gave itself permission to spy on every citizen, and infringe upon their privacy. After those hoax terrorist attacks, more and more surveillance and tracking has been happening. Mostly through cell phone, electric towers, Ring doorbell cameras, RFID chips in credit cards and passports, biometrics(fingerprints/facial recognition), smart meters in on your homes, (anything with the name "SMART" in it, and the list goes on and on and on. Government used to watch OVER the people. Now they watch the people. There's a constant data stream of everything we do and research for online, that's being funneled into government agencies.

A Full-Scale Mock Up (FSMU) of the Hero-30 Tactical, Manpack Loitering Munition System at the 2022 Asia Defense And Security (ADAS) Event at the World Trade Center (WTC) in Pasay. What's nice about this is that it can be carried and launched like a typical man-portable Canister Missile.

The Canister and Munition weighs 7.8 kg, the Munition has an Endurance of 30 minutes, range of 15 km and a Warhead of 0.5 kg. It is made by the Israeli Company “UVision Air Limited”.

A Brochure of the NMS 4x4 Tactical Light Armored Vehicle at the 2022 Asia Defense And Security (ADAS) Event at the World Trade Center (WTC) in Pasay. As we can see from the Brochure, it is being offered to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) by the Turkish Company “Nurol Makina”.

It comes in all sorts of Variants, has a Modular and Scalable Armor System, and also has protection from Improvised Explosive Devices (IED).

A Full Scale Mock Up (FSMU) of the Diwata 2 Microsatellite at the 2022 Asia Defense And Security (ADAS) Event at the World Trade Center (WTC) in Pasay. The Diwata 2 is the Philippines’ second Microsatellite and was made by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) with the help of Japan.

The Satellite was launched in 2018 in Japan and is still in orbit and being used as of now. It is equipped with high-resolution Cameras, and it Mission includes Environmental Monitoring and Post-Disaster Assessment.

I reblogged it earlier but I'm glad the Something Awful Forums 9/11 thread was archived because it's an incredibly important slice of internet history. For the record I think 9/11 was thousands of personal tragedies for the direct victims of the attacks but one big national farce that led to America's ongoing slide into fascism, and the nationalism and remembrance around it is a joke especially in the wake of the same amount of deaths every fucking day in the US during the height of coronavirus.

Nevertheless I think it's important that if you do not remember because you were too young or just didn't exist on Sept 11, 2001 to read the Something Awful 9/11 forums to get an idea of what the internet was like at the moment when America changed to 24 hour news cycles and renewed hyper-nationalism not seen since WWII.

This all happened before Twitter, Facebook, before Discord. Before smart phones. Before most people had cell phones. When a lot of people still had dial-up internet, even. Some people in the thread were relying on radio because internet and TV weren't keeping up.

It was a live event of internet denizens reacting to the biggest national event (and among the biggest international events) of the past 25 years. It was also a slice of what the internet was like at the turn of the millennium. Not only that, but people accurately calling out who was responsible, and what would result before the attacks even finished.

Keep in mind that the links that follow contain images of the event, lots of Islamophobia, people calling for the Middle East to be nuked, people blaming Palestine, casual racist and homophobic language (this was Something Awful after all), etc etc. They preserved the first 17 pages which spanned about 24 hours during the events. It's the origin of the "WATCH BUSH START A FUCKING WAR" screenshot.

Note the thread was preserved in Pacific Time even though the page says times are Eastern. That's incorrect. Post timestamps are 3 hours behind Eastern Time, which is the time zone where the attacks occurred:

Page 13 - By this point there's just rampant speculation about more bombs at the WTC, the US Capitol building being hit, etc (all false). Remember this is all just people reacting to TV news and radio and the rumor mill via phone, AIM, IRC, and maybe text messages.

Page 15 - Second tower collapses. First acknowledgement of the fourth plane that crashed in PA.

Page 16 - There's an abrupt time jump in the threads, I think it was the result of admins pruning the activity or the SA forums going down. This page starts on 9/12 even though it is page 16. American flag signatures and ribbons start appearing.

The Twin Towers were white elephants that their owner, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, had wanted to demolish for years but could not as the buildings were loaded with asbestos that would have cost millions to remove.

Among other issues, the buildings were not wired for WIFI and the occupancy rate was below 50%. Why on earth would anyone want to lease these antiquated pieces of trash properties?

Why indeed?

In January 2001, Silverstein made a $3.2 billion bid to lease-purchase the World Trade Center complex. Silverstein's negotiated bid was finalized on July 24, 2001, less than 2 months prior to 9/11. The Port Authority agreed to lease the twin towers to Larry Silverstein and he agreed to pay the equivalent of $3.2 billion over the next 99 years. This was the first time in the complex's 31-year history that it had changed management.

The lease agreement applied to One, Two, Four, and Five World Trade Center, and about 425,000 square feet of retail space. Silverstein put up just $14 million of his own money to secure the deal. The agreement gave Silverstein, as leaseholder, the right and the obligation to rebuild the structures if destroyed.

The insurance policies for World Trade Center buildings WTC 1. 2, 4 and 5 had a collective face amount of $3.55 billion and the insurance policy he took out included protection against terrorist attacks.
