Hey guys this is Kore. today I brought a cheesecake. It's made according to a family recipe. I hope you like it :) I want to tell you something interesting about us demigods - we are born with certain epithets, with certain abilities in our domains of our parents and we are the embodiments of our mortal parents' idea of the gods with whom they had a loving relationship. For example, I was born in the epithets of Apollo Iatromantis, Chrysocomes, Loimios and Helios. Apollo god of prophecy and healing, Apollo with golden hair, Apollo god of plague, Apollo god of the sun. And my mortal dad saw Apollo as a sweet, somewhat eccentric guy who could predict the future, excelled in medicine and knew all diseases and he absolutely worshipped his golden hair. That's why I was born the way I am. As for you, I have a couple of thoughts - Luke is the son of Hermes Dolios, Hermes Pheletes and Hermes Krateros. Hermes, the god of lies and deception, Hermes the god of thieves, robbers and robbers, Hermes the mighty god. Mae Castellan seen Hermes as a charming deceiver and their acquaintance began with a stolen wallet. Chris is the son of Hermes Epimelius, Hermes Oeopolus, Hermes Kharidôtês. Hermes guarding the flock, Hermes the shepherd, Hermes the Giver of Joy. Your mother got together with Hermes on the basis of a common love for animals, Hermes used all his charm and sense of humor. Your mother was constantly smiling and laughing in his company. They took care of the animals together. Silena is the daughter of Aphrodite Areia, Aphrodite Callipygos, Aphrodite Nicephorus, Aphrodite Philommides. Aphrodite is the goddess of war, aphrodite is lush and beautiful, Aphrodite Bringer of Victory, Aphrodite Laughter-Loving. Your father fell in love with Aphrodite, who in his eyes was a strong-willed, determined and at the same time gentle and caring girl. Your father was constantly making her laugh to listen to her beautiful laugh and see her wonderful smile... Silena, you got your smile and laughter from your mom.
postscript, - Ethan, Alabaster, I'm still collecting information about your mothers.
Silena: Thank you for the food and for the information, we’re very grateful for it. *takes a bite from the cheesecake* I knew about the existence of of epithets from my ventures into the Camp Half-Blood archive, but I’ve never managed to find out what mine were. Well, your contribution to that is appreciated. I think they describe me pretty well. These epithets are interesting in a way, they’re both empowering and dehumanizing… just like gods, we’re mere embodiments of certain concepts, personifications of their power. I find that both scary and beautiful in a way. I wonder what the boys think of them?
Luke: Well, as interesting as they are, I don’t take pride in the epithets and powers that I got from my father. I don’t claim them as mine, and frankly I dislike using them. Maybe only against him, I enjoy the irony of that. But I’m not Luke Pheletes. I’m Luke Castellan. Hermes never acted like my father, so why should I act like his son? I don’t want to carry his so-called honor in my last name or in my abilities, because those are mine and mine only. I just wish I could rip myself away from him entirely, but sadly I can’t do that.
Chris: I get what you’re saying… but I perceive it differently. Maybe the epithets are symbols of me and my mother’s experience, and that’s something I can take pride in. It’s not about Hermes, it never was. It’s about my love for animals, the one I share with my mama. It’s about my talent, my humor, my life and how I came to be. I made myself human, and that’s something he can’t take away from me. He didn’t do shit for me, so I don’t want his powers to define me in any way.
Ethan: I… did not know about epithets. I wonder what mine are, and if they would even say something about me. Would I even like them? Do I even deserve to know them before I die? I don’t know… Al, what do you think? What do you know about this?
Alabaster: *straightening his back* Well, I do know the epithets that I inherited from Hecate.
Ethan: You do? You never said anything about them!
Alabaster: You never asked!
Ethan: Fair enough. What are your epithets, Al?
Alabaster: Well, I am the son of Hecate Prothegetis, Hecate Dadouchos and, most importantly, Hecate Amaimaketos. Leader, Torch-bearer, The Raging One. My mother might have perceived Hecate as a guide, a protector, but she was simultaneously a force, a warrior. I must have inherited all these attributes from her, and they really seem to show… They are a part of me. They are unchangeable, and I’ll have to put them to good use.
Ethan: Yeah… Thanks for the message, Kore. Please let me know if you find out anything about my mother.
[OOC: God, this answer gave me so much trouble! The first variant of it was even more complex, but sadly I lost some of the ideas. I hope that what I managed to write is good enough in the end!]

Yoongi groaned as he strained to open his eyes. He could barely stifle a yawn as he leaned on the stroller slowly moving it through the aisle. His phone rested atop of the little tray attached to the handles, buzzing incessantly as messages from his company bombarded the screen. Could he not have some rest even on a Sunday?
He sighed as he stopped in front of the cereals, examining the boxes, trying to decide between his craving for Froot Loops and the healthier choice of Muselli. Knowing that he would be eating said cereal for dinner this whole week, he opted for Museli, missing the days he had enough time to cook a proper meal for himself.
“Daddy! Up!” Hyunji’s lisp pulled him out of his reminiscing as he watched his two year old daughter wriggling around in her seat, arms up to coax him into carrying her. Rubbing his eyes and trying to balance his grocery basket, Yoongi crouched to her level as she impatiently smacked her hands on the foam bar in front of her. He couldn’t help but smile at her - her tiny eyes almost hidden by her rosy chubby cheeks, hair a mess as she had managed to pull one of her pigtails out.
“We’ll be home soon, Ji,” he cooed at the chaotic love of his life, placing his basket on the floor to fix her shoe that had seemed to come undone for the eighth time this morning. However, his placades were lost on her as his daughter used her future swimmer lungs to scream, her shrill voice making him wince, but surprisingly working much better than the two iced coffees he had chugged earlier.
With a groan, Yoongi settled on the floor, trying to dodge her little feet that were kicking at him. He really couldn’t wait till she outgrew her temper tantrums. Reaching into his hoodie pocket, he pulled out a small pack of tissues, trying his best to get rid of the snot and tears that flowed down her face as she angrily fought him, her tiny fists colliding with his forearms.
“Ji, please. Calm down,” Yoongi sighed, trying his best to pacify his screaming daughter, while throwing apologetic glances at the shoppers passing by. “Okay, you want to be like that? Then let it out of your system. Go ahead.”
Resigning himself to his fate, Yoongi sat cross-legged in front of her stroller and rubbed his eyes. He knew Hyunji would calm down soon enough, and with the week he had he didn’t care if passerbys thought he was a terrible father for letting his daughter cry her eyes out in the breakfast aisle. In fact, he didn’t care that he himself was close to tears. He felt overwhelmed and bitter, the words of his mother ringing in his ears. “If only you had worked out your issues, she would be here, and you wouldn’t be alone!”
He laughed deliriously, the weeks of shitty sleep catching up to him as he pleaded with his daughter to calm down, bribing her with candy he never bought her to no avail. “Please baby, just half an hour and then we’ll be home,” Yoongi negotiated, his eyes glassy as Hyunji shrieked in response, causing him to startle and bang his shin against the wheel. He hissed in pain, grimacing with his head against the foam rod as she pulled at his dark hair. He loved his daughter, truly from the bottom of his heart, but he couldn’t wait till she started preschool next week and he could get some reprieve.
“Do you mind if I try?”
Yoongi followed the voice to see you crouching next to him. Dressed in a printed dress with little dinosaurs all over it, and a pair of red glasses that matched your shoes, you didn’t seem like you worked at the store, but Yoongi couldn’t care less. He didn’t know if his exhaustion was blurring his mind, but you seemed like the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. He couldn’t stop staring at you, from the slope of your nose, to your hair that fell into your eyes. Had Yoongi really been that deprived of adult human contact that just looking at you made his heart pound in his chest and heat rise to his cheeks? Wow, your lips were really pretty. They looked so soft, crinkling a little on the side when you spoke. Oh shit, you were speaking!
Yoongi was broken out of his thoughts by your voice. “What’s her name,” you asked, tentatively reaching out towards the angry toddler.
“Hyunji.”
Yoongi felt as if he was in a daze, he couldn’t stop staring at you as you reached out to lightly touch Hyunji, your fingers grabbing her little hand in something akin to a handshake. He watched in awe as Hyunji immediately stopped her screams to look at you curiously, her head tilted to the side as she sniffled. Yoongi would be upset that his daughter seemed to be more calm with a stranger than him if it weren’t for how the soft smile on your face made him lose his train of thought. It made your cheeks puff up a little and he felt his heart skip a beat at the small movement.
“Hey Hyunji! I’m Y/N. How are you today,” you said, as Hyunji finally responded with what Yoongi had spent the whole year teaching her, moving her hand away and looking wary. Yoongi felt pride surge through him knowing that his daughter wasn’t going to let a stranger act all buddy-buddy with her. However, Hyunji’s rejection made a small frown appear on your lips, and Yoongi mentally willed his daughter to be nice to you.
You weren’t deterred however, and with another smile, you reached into your bag draped across your torso to retrieve a small stuffed toy shaped like a chocolate cookie type character. Yoongi’s eyes couldn’t help but follow the strap of your bag as it rested between your chest, perfectly aligned with the slight cleavage afforded by the dress. He gulped, trying to shake the flurry of thoughts that ran through his mind like how his face would feel if it was the strap.
“No handshake? Okay. How about a toy,” you asked, grinning and shaking the character in front of the toddler, your smile getting wider as she responded immediately reaching for the toy. So much for stranger danger training. Your voice turned high pitched and cartoonish as you pretended to be the toy, Hyunji immediately lighting up and laughing, the switch an instant 180. “Hi Hyunji, I’m Shooky! Nice to meet you!”
“Shooky!” she exclaimed, waving the toy towards Yoongi to show it to him gleefully. Yoongi smiled, cooing at his daughter. Turning towards you, he found you smiling at him, the same soft smile that made him senseless earlier. He wanted to thank you for saving him, for calming down his whirlwind of a daughter, but his mouth seemed to have a mind of its own.
“Is that a cookie? She’s not allowed to have cookies.”
“It’s a toy…” You seemed confused, rightly so, your eyebrows scrunched together as you blinked slowly, trying to decipher his meaning. Yoongi should’ve clarified, apologized, but he wouldn’t be himself if he didn’t double down.
“Shaped like a cookie. That’s a slippery slope.” He waved towards his daughter who seemed to be bashing the poor character against her leg, giggling. He realized his type of humour was not everyone’s cup of tea and so when he watched your lips down turn, he started to apologize only to be stopped by you smirking at him.
“So you’re saying a toy shaped like a cookie is a gateway drug to junk food,” you said, an eyebrow raised at him. Your wit made him cackle, an unattractive, loud scream of a laugh that immediately turned him red in embarrassment. God, he was such a loser! He cleared his throat conscious of the way you chuckled in amusement. He really needed to get out of the house more often.
“I’m sorry. I’m tired. Thank you, really. I had resigned to sitting here for a couple of hours.” He smiled up at you as you stood up and watched Hyunjin in endearment, who was now thoroughly engrossed in ‘Shooky’. Following your lead, Yoongi made to stand up, only to realize one of his feet had decided to fall asleep on him causing him to stumble back with a groan.
“Need a hand?” You raised a hand towards him, one that he took graciously, if only to feel how soft your hands were, and they were so soft. He groaned a little as he stood, taking extra care not to pull you to the ground with him, regardless of how much he wanted to. Jesus, Yoongi. Relax, dude.
“Thanks. I swear I’m not as old as I seem,” he deadpanned as you giggled a little at his bones cracking loudly.
“I didn’t think you were old.” You shrugged in response as he thought of ways to keep the conversation going. However, his mind was blank. You looked at him expectantly, and in true awkward fashion, Yoongi averted your gaze, instead looking at his daughter. His jaw dropped at the sight before him as he squinted at his offspring who seemed to be dozing happily in the stroller, clutching the cookie under her chin.
“She’s asleep… How did you do that?” He was dumbfounded. There was a reason Yoongi still seemed like he was sleep walking even two coffees down. Hyunjin had been having trouble falling asleep for weeks, waking him up at all hours of the night. The doctor said something about her delayed teething, but at this point Yoongi was convinced she just hated him for never letting her have sugar.
“No biggie. I work in childcare. I’ve been trained.” He looked at you in awe and you chuckled, patting him on the shoulder in an attempt to break him out of his daze. Could he fall in love at first sight? He was beginning to think, yes.
“Yes biggie! She never falls asleep,” he exclaimed, running a hand through his hair. “What kind of witchcraft…” He looked from you to his daughter, still in disbelief as he muttered, earning a hearty laugh from you in response.
“I’m Y/N, by the way,” you said, smiling as you closed your bag and fixed the strap, and he had to physically restrain his eyes from zeroing in on your chest again. He wasn’t going to lie, his eye balls felt strained at the effort.
“Yoongi. But seriously, thank you. I promise I’m not a bad father,” he provided, the shock now wearing off into anxiety as he thought about how much of a crap father he seemed to be so amazed at seeing his daughter fall asleep. You shook your head at him, a small sound of disapproval leaving your lips.
“I think you’re a great father, Yoongi. Don’t worry, toddlers are hard.” The praise made his heart stutter as blood rushed to his ears. The way you softly affirmed him made him feel seen. He didn’t know how much he needed to hear that, and to be honest, he felt a little emotional.
“I… thank you. I’d like to say you’re wrong but yeah, especially alone,” he spoke quietly. He didn’t know why he specified he was single. Maybe to see if you were as interested in him as he was in you. He didn’t think it was possible. Who would want to be with a single father who couldn’t even handle his own child in a public space? He felt his insecurities gnaw at him as he descended further into his head. His sudden silence may have alarmed you because before he could say anything, you touched his shoulder gingerly, the feel of your fingers scorching him through the thick layers of his sweater.
“Well you’re doing great. Professional opinion.” You smiled and Yoongi wanted to cry. Why were you so nice? He missed nice. He hadn’t had nice in a long time. He wanted to say something, ask you for your number, but that seemed too forward so he settled for gratitude, as you picked up his basket and handed it to him.
“Thank you…”
“Cute,” you giggled quietly. “It was nice meeting you Yoongi.”
Much to his disappointment, you started walking away. He really shouldn’t have gotten his hopes up. Hope always led to dismay.
“You too, Y/N. Really great.” He sighed, almost wistfully, resigned to the fact that he would probably never see you again as you waved and turned around.
“Say bye to Hyunji for me.”
“I will.”
----------
He looked at his daughter with pride as she stood in front of him, her dark hair in two slightly lopsided braids, that had taken Yoongi an hour to master through youtube tutorials. He couldn’t help but feel a little choked up as she excitedly pulled on his arm all but running towards her classroom, her frilly pink dress swishing with each step. He couldn’t believe she was old enough for school already - preschool, but still.
Yoongi tried to stop his brain from conjuring up pictures of her future; her graduating, her walking down the aisle. No, screw sleep, he didn’t need it. This was too fast. He held her hand tightly, reluctant to let her go as they reached the door.
What was he supposed to do now that she was going to be gone all day? He could almost feel himself tear up at the thought of how much he was going to miss her, and she was still holding her hand. Maybe he could ask the teacher if he could just sit and watch. Sure he had to be at his home office to start work in thirty minutes, but he could just say he suddenly fell ill.
However, all thoughts as well as his breath left him as his eyes fell on a familiar figure - the beautiful, kind woman from the grocery store. You.
This time around you were dressed in a dress that had little planets on it, looking a lot like Ms Frizzle with your hair in a top knot. Yoongi didn’t know whether to be ecstatic that universe had given him another opportunity to talk to you or be depressed because he knew he would never be with.
“Yoongi!” The joy and surprise in your voice made his face crinkle in a goofy smile that he had absolutely no control over, as he fiddled with his fingers, Hyunjin quickly abandoning him at the first sign of new friends. She definitely did not inherit her stellar social skills from him, as he stood there unable to form a response other than a shy utterance of your name.
“I was hoping to run into you again,” you said, beaming blindly and Yoongi blushed.
With his heartbeat accelerating, he realised that those eight words were probably the best he had ever heard.

Food for the Heart
My first July commission fic! Thanku to Chip for helping look things over <3 Soldier 76 & Reaper & Jesse McCree & F!Reader Rating: General | Pre-Fall of Overwatch, fluff Word Count: ~3500
Sometimes -- if you thought about it -- the fact that you had some of the highest security clearance in the entirety of the UN, as well as several major militaries, could make your palms sweat and your heart pound. Imposter syndrome sure was a bitch.
You would look out on all of the heroes and saviors and geniuses of the world, unsure of how you managed to fit in and even sit at the same table as Director Petras and Strike Commander Morrison himself.
People wouldn’t stop in the halls to salute you or turn to you for input. Many of your colleagues didn’t even seem to know your name. You were nothing but background to them, just the hand that delivered documents or typed along to broadcasts. It was enough to trick you into believing you didn’t belong.
But there was a reason you were sat at the table with the most influential people in the world. There was a reason that your office was in the same wing as the other heroes of Overwatch. And you had earned your place there -- a fact you had to remind yourself of over and over again as Commander Reyes and Commander Morrison swept by your desk every morning or as Captain Amari chatted with Lieutenant Wilhelm within earshot of your workspace. Occasionally, you would even come back from lunch to find that a cowboy and a ninja had commandeered your desktop and your office chair, respectively.
You were invisible to them. Silent and unassuming. Blending in so seamlessly to the environment that they didn’t seem to notice you were there -- which is how you heard everything. Listening was your job, after all. You were a linguist, responsible for interpreting and translating any documents or meetings or broadcasts that passed through the upper command chain. You had access to the highest security channels, writing down field notes and debriefs for anyone on base who needed them.
Fluent in 14 human languages and 3 Omnic communication systems, you were one of the most valuable assets Overwatch had. Your work during the crisis had earned you a rank and pension that looked like a mistake on all your paperwork. Surely someone as plain as you couldn’t be that powerful?
And the work hadn’t finished after the crisis. You had been swept along into the ranks and shipped off to Zurich to spend your days listening to every piece of information that needed your ears.
And you heard everything.
You heard Captain Amari talking about her daughter and Lieutenant Wilhelm lamenting his losses on the battlefield, Jesse McCree joking and ribbing with Agent Shimada, who barely ever responded when you were within earshot. You overheard Strike Commander Morrison laughing with his friends and hurling orders and sighing over paperwork, Commander Reyes growling and grumbling and occasionally giving a full-bellied laugh when someone made a fool of themselves.
But no one ever seemed to speak directly to you unless they were requesting something or saying thank you. Your days were spent surrounded by people who would lay down their lives for one another but didn’t even seem to notice as you came and went.
It was certainly lonely, being in an unfamiliar country on a foreign base, working long hours in the fruitless business of world peace. You would return to your tiny apartment in the evenings -- luxurious, but small -- and try and make the most of your life of prestige and success and heroism. You had made the space cozy and perfect since you found yourself with more money than you knew what to do with. Your family had retired to one of the nicest homes you could buy them, and you still couldn’t get rid of the stuff.
So you spent your evenings cooking and baking exquisite dishes with expensive ingredients. You had gotten rather good at it. Any time someone on base mentioned a dish that they liked, you made sure to jot it down for later. Every night you indulged in food from all over the world that you had made with your own two hands.
But you found yourself with a lot of leftovers.
You were all alone in Zurich, with just a few friends in other parts of the organization that you only got to see when the stars were perfectly aligned. There was no way you could eat all this food.
So you started leaving gifts for the high command.
Strike Commander Morrison was the one who had given you the idea to make the pie in the first place. He had complained about how much he missed the sweet from his hometown, and you had found a recipe that sounded like what he described.
You wrapped a few slices up as nicely as you could and slipped them onto his desk just before he came in one morning.
The only thing you hadn’t counted on was just how invisible you truly were.
Commander Morrison made a sound of surprise when he saw the sparkling clear wrapping paper and curled ribbons. He poked his head out of his office and glanced around. No one else had come in yet, and you were already hard at work transcribing some Omnic signals that had been intercepted.
He asked Captain Amari about it when she arrived a few minutes later.
“You can’t trust random packages that appear on your desk, Jack. You should have reported a security breach immediately. Where is it? We’ll have to send it down for examination.”
Commander Morrison looked sheepish. “I ate them already.”
Captain Amari whacked him upside the head.
“I skipped breakfast!” he whined. “And it was absolutely delicious. It tasted just like home.”
Hearing those words was enough. You didn’t care that the Strike Commander was a fool who didn’t seem to notice your presence. He had enjoyed your treat, and that was all the reward you needed.
You continued to leave sweets for the high command whenever you could. You were sure at some point they would realize it was you, but they never said anything.
Cookies. Sweet breads. Cakes. Candied fruits. Pastries. You were improving as a baker at an alarming rate, considering you had nothing to do in your free time but replicate the recipes all the soldiers on base missed from back home.
The Strike Commander, Lieutenant Wilhelm, and Agent McCree were the most shameless about indulging in your gifts. The other captains and officers partook as well. You had never even seen Agent Shimada eat, though he would gently wrap a small portion to take back to his quarters, and Torbjorn would always wrinkle his nose and scoff at the sweets, but you didn’t miss him slipping a few into his pockets for later.
Despite how much you were making and sharing, there was one person whom you never got the chance to cook for. Everyone else had mentioned a dessert offhand at some point or another, only to find the exact treat waiting for them the next day. Even Agent Shimada had mentioned a fluffy cheesecake once, though he took his portion back to his quarters to eat it. Only one person eluded your gifts, and you were patiently waiting for the opportunity to strike.
You were up to your neck in transcriptions when you finally got your chance. Something you could cook for Commander Reyes.
It was just him, Agent McCree, and the Strike Commander. You were tucked away at your desk as always, invisible to everyone but listening attentively.
“Can’t believe I was in Mexico for a week and spent the whole time camped out in the jungle. I would have killed somebody for a good churro.” Commander Reyes grumbled.
“You did kill people, boss. A lot of people.” Agent McCree had his boots on the table and was grinning around an unlit cigarillo.
“You watch your mouth,” the commander snapped, but his shoulders shook with laughter.
Churros. Authentic Mexican churros. You could certainly do your best to make some and leave them for the Blackwatch commander.
It only took a few tries to get them how you wanted them, and you strolled into the high command offices the following day with a beautifully wrapped box.
Commander Reyes didn’t have a desk in the command wing, but you knew he would be by early. You left the box on the same table Agent McCree was sitting at yesterday and got to work while you waited for everyone else to arrive.
Commander Morrison lit up in excitement when he saw the enormous box waiting on the table, but, after a peek inside, he realized who the sweets were for and didn’t take any. It would have been fine. You had made plenty enough for everyone.
Captain Amari wasn’t as enthusiastic as the Strike Commander, but she let her curiosity get the best of her and gently pried open the box as well. She smirked, and you could have sworn you saw her glance your way, but you were trying to be as inconspicuous as possible as you listened to a diplomatic summit presentation.
At last, Commander Reyes made his appearance. He didn’t hesitate to go straight for the box on the table, lifting the lid and inspecting the contents with an impassive expression. He was completely unreadable as you watched him out of the corner of your eye.
Delicately, he lifted one of the churros out of the box and took a bite. He chewed for a moment, brows furrowed. You wished he would say something. Instead, you saw the tension in his shoulders ease just a little, and you knew you had done an good job.
And that was the end of it -- so you thought. Commander Reyes shared the churros, and everyone else remarked that they were delicious. The rest of the day carried on as usual.
Until you found yourself alone again. Even when they were on base, it wasn’t uncommon for Commander Morrison and Captain Amari to spend most of the day away from their offices. But now, even the other captains and assistants were gone, and it was totally silent.
Commander Reyes strolled into the command wing with his hands in his pockets. You didn’t think anything of it until he came right up to your desk, taking a seat on the edge.
“They were delicious,” he said, watching you intently.
So he knew it was you. He had probably had known for a while. The Blackwatch commander rarely let anything slip by him.
“Thank you, Sir,” you answered, not able to look him in the eye. “When did you figure it out?”
“You made salted caramel cookies for McCree. Cheesecake for Shimada. I need to know who is eavesdropping on my agent’s conversations.”
You flinched at that. “I only had the best intentions.” You chewed your lip. “The gifts were meant to be harmless.”
Commander Reyes chuckled. “You sure harmed Jack’s diet. The man has a sweet tooth and no spine. Put a dessert in front of him, and he can’t say no.”
“He doesn’t need to be on a diet, anyway. You’re all built like Greek gods,” you rolled your eyes. Then the reality of what you had said set in, and you were panicking in your seat. Leaving treats for your superior officers was only mildly questionable. Ogling their physiques and daydreaming about their strong arms was far less appropriate.
“I mean no disrespect, Sir,” you started to ramble. “I spoke out of line, and it wasn’t my place to say anything. Please just forget I ever opened my mouth.”
Commander Reyes laughed again, fuller this time as he leaned back on your desk. “It’s clear you’ve heard everything said in this office. You think that’s going to get you in trouble?” He was right. Conversations among the officers were far from professional. You had heard your share of inappropriate comments and spicy stories.
You looked at your hands in your lap. This was overwhelming. You were so used to being invisible. Now, the commander was confronting you, watching you closely and chatting as if it was nothing. You weren’t sure you had ever exchanged casual conversation with the Blackwatch commander.
“Why do you hide?” he asked. “Leave everything in secret and never speak up? We all know by now, anyway.”
You didn’t really have an answer for him. Maybe you didn’t feel worthy? Maybe you were shy? Neither of those explanations felt quite right.
“I never meant to hide. When I made the pie for Commander Morrison, he didn’t even seem to consider that I could have been the one to leave it. I know I’m practically invisible around here, anyway.” You shrugged. No one paid attention to a quiet linguist. Your voice was only used to relay the messages of other people.
“You’re not invisible. Not to us. We see you every day. Maybe it’s time that you let us give you a gift, what do you say? We definitely should have shown our appreciation sooner.” Commander Reyes held out his hand, eyes kinder than you had ever seen.
“I don’t- What do you mean?” you asked.
Impatient as always, the commander simply grabbed your wrist and pulled you to your feet. “I’m the boss, so you’re coming with me.” He dragged you out of the offices and towards what you recognized to be the high command quarters. You couldn’t disobey a direct order from your superior, so you stumbled along as quickly as you could.
While your apartment was in a cute little residential building on the other end of base, the high command quarters were housed in a higher security building connected to the command center via a series of secure walkways. Reyes simply keyed in a code and ushered you across the glass skyway.
“Sir, I don’t believe I have clearance to access the command living quarters,” you tried to warn him.
“You have access as Jack’s guest.” He answered as if that would explain anything. Why would you be the Strike Commander’s guest?
Commander Reyes pulled to a stop in front of a door with a mailbox outside labeled 3001. He rapped his knuckles on the metal door, tapping his foot as there was the sound of scrambling inside, and the door slid open. Agent McCree was grinning on the other side.
“You came!” He stepped forward and pulled you into a bone-crushing hug, lifting you off the ground and setting you down inside what you assumed to be the Strike Commander’s quarters. “Jack and I were worried Gabe would scare you away.”
“He scared me, that’s for sure. What am I doing here?” You couldn’t keep yourself from looking around the apartment. It was nice, comfortable, with state-of-the-art appliances and plenty of space for more than one person. Much larger than your own apartment.
McCree looked offended. “You didn’t tell her anything? Did you just abduct her from her desk like some kind of madman?”
“No,” Gabe said at the exact same time you said, “Yes.”
The cowboy rolled his eyes. He took one of your hands in both of his and, with the most earnest expression, begged for your forgiveness. “The three of us wanted to say thank you for all the sweets you’ve been baking lately. Those churros were absolutely amazing, so we all pitched in to make dinner for you. Gabe was supposed to ask politely if you would join us. It would make my whole world if you did.”
You weren’t sure how you could say no to something so sweet. Agent McCree was certainly scruffy and rough around the edges at times, but you couldn’t deny he was a true gentleman, unlike his boss.
You nodded, and McCree pulled you in for another hug. “Atta girl! Jack should be back in just a moment. He had to borrow some stuff from Ana.”
Sure enough, the Strike Commander appeared just a moment late with an arm full of cookware and ingredients. He was dressed down to a faded t-shirt and his combat uniform pants with an apron. When he set everything down on the counter, you realized the apron was printed with the warning “hot stuff coming through,” and you couldn’t hide your snort of laughter.
“Ana got it for him as a gift. Jack has been our barbecue guy for the past five years now.” Reyes explained.
“I like it,” you grinned. “It’s accurate.”
You had never seen the Strike Commander blush. He fumbled with the container he was prying open. “Supper was supposed to be ready by the time you got here, but I don’t always keep cooking stuff here. We’ve got snacks and drinks, and Jesse will probably make you watch something terrible with him on the TV.”
You nodded. “Thank you for all of this, Sirs.”
“Woah, woah,” McCree held up his hands. “None of that shit around here. We do first names around here only, or embarrassing nicknames.”
You were extremely thankful for McCree- Jesse. He had a way of making you feel perfectly at ease even though you were so far out of your element. “Come on, I’m gonna show you some classic films while they cook.” He wrapped a hand around your waist and led you to the couch, flicking through the menu on the wall-sized screen. You had seen how much physical affection the high command shared, and you assumed it came from trust on the battlefield. But it seemed the comfort and intimacy extended to you as well.
“Do you need help in the kitchen?” You asked the Strike Commander.
“Absolutely not,” he winked at you. “You’ve cooked far too much for all of us, and it’s our turn to make it up to you. Your job is to keep Jesse out of the kitchen.”
The cowboy grinned at you. “They say I’m a hazard.”
You nodded. “I can see that.” Gathering all of your courage, you nestled into his side on the couch. He threw an arm around your shoulders easily and selected a movie. “What are we watching?”
“Seven Samurai. Genji showed it to me. Did you know that 1900’s cowboy movies and 1900’s samurai movies are like the same thing? He’s the only one who appreciates my Eastwood classics.”
Reyes chimed in from the kitchen. “For a bunch of assassins, it turns out my entire squadron is made up of nerds.”
“And you’re the Head Nerd. King of all Nerds.” Morrison knocked him with an elbow. “We’ve seen your Halloween costumes.”
Your eyebrows shot up. “Commander Reyes is a nerd?”
“Gabe,” Jesse corrected you, “is the biggest nerd of them all. He likes musicals.”
You were smiling widely now. You had been so lonely in Zurich, and now you were being included in teasing and movies and dinner with three of the most powerful men in Overwatch.
Comman- Gabe must have finished his part of the prep work because he sprawled out on the couch on your other side. It felt so nice to be sandwiched between them as the movie played. Jesse’s fingers absently played with your hair, and Gabe’s thigh pressed against your own.
Dinner didn’t take very long at all, and the four of you sat down at Jack’s dining table. There were casseroles, baked potatoes, roasted meat, and vegetables. You made sure to put a little bit of everything on your plate.
“I wasn’t sure what your favorites are, so we made a Morrison family dinner. A taste of the American Midwest.” Jack smiled sheepishly.
“It’s great!” you loved seeing this glimpse of the Strike Commander’s home.
“Next time, I’ll have to show you how we did it in LA,” Gabe was already digging in. “Jack’s Aunt Cindy is an excellent cook, but my sister knows how to make the best tamales.”
You were already putting together a menu based on what your family used to cook. It would be so much fun to treat them to the same meals you had grown up eating.
Jesse cocked his head. “I didn’t eat much as a kid that didn’t come out of a can or a box, but Ana has showed me how to make some things over the years. We’ll have to get her to cook one night.”
The implication that this was only the first of many more nights to come, your heart felt so warm and fuzzy. You tried to hide your blush as you ate.
After finishing dinner, you attempted to help wash up and found yourself forcibly removed from the kitchen by Gabe. “Stop trying to help and just let us treat you.”
And so you found yourself back snuggled up on the couch between them as the movie finished. They were so affectionate, pulling you against them and wrapping their arms around you. It felt natural. You had been working in the same office as them for years, hearing all of their conversations and watching them care for each other. Now, instead of an invisible bystander, you were a part of the family. But you had never truly been invisible. Clearly, everyone else had always considered you as one of them.
You must have dozed off at some point because Jack gently shook you awake. “Jesse can walk you back to your place,” he pushed a container of leftovers into your hand and wrapped you in a hug. “Don’t hide so much from now on, ok?”
You nodded. “Next time, you have to let me help cook.”

Demon brothers & Undateables react to an MC with a preteen child
(As you might have guessed by now, GN MC!)
(the child’s gender may be specified in some of the scenarios)
(Y/C/N = your child’s name)
Spoilers for lesson 16 in Belphie’s section!!
Lucifer
Toddler or Preteen, it didn’t make much difference to the eldest brother. He’s seen all the stages of development with the majority of his brothers and Satan, there’s probably nothing your child could possibly throw his way that would shock him.
That is, until he actually met your child. At first he remained at his full height to assert dominance, there was no way he was going to stoop to this human’s level not that his back would allow it anyways. But then, before he could even properly introduce himself, your 12 year old squared his shoulders and declared to the Avatar of Pride, if he did anything to hurt you, your son would make his life hell... oh wait.
That bold statement did surprise Lucifer at first, but as your son trailed off and stepped back slightly, realising his mistake, he couldn’t help but laugh. “Kudos, young man, but I don’t think there’s much you can do that can torment me terribly.” he chuckled.
“Wanna bet?” your son grumbled in response, already thinking of numerous ways to make this strange man pay.
“I have six younger brothers, I’d like to see you come up with anything they haven’t.” he smirked in response, “Anyways, come along, preparations for your room have been completed.”
With that, Lucifer turned away from your son and strode down the corridor. This year was certainly going to be interesting...
Mammon
The Avatar of Greed didn’t really know what to say when he saw you standing next to a slightly smaller version of yourself. At first, he thought you were siblings, but then it dawned on him that you had a child.
Mammon, as the ‘babysitter’ naturally spent more time around your daughter than you, but that certainly didn’t stop him from adding the odd flirtatious remark to you when he wasn’t being a tsundere.
It was this development that caused your daughter to speak up one evening when she was chilling in the lounge with Mammon and Asmodeus. “Listen, Mammon, as much as I don’t mind you flirting with my parent, there’s something you ought to know. Hurt them and I swear to you now I will kick you so hard up the ass you’ll taste nothing but my shoe for a week.” your daughter boldly announced, not once glancing up from her phone.
While Asmo was busy rolling on the floor in tears of laughter, the white-haired demon just spluttered as his cheeks darkened. “H-hey what makes you think I-I’d hurt ya ma anyways.” he tried to defend himself.
“I’m not saying I expect you’re going to hurt them, just giving you even more of an incentive not to.” your child smiled in an almost sickeningly sweet manner before jumping up from the sofa.
“This was a lovely chat but me and Beel are going out for lunch, catch you later!”
Asmo picked himself up from the floor, and as he pushed Mammon’s jaw back up, he added “she’d be the perfect niece for me, hurry up and take MC out on a date.” With that, Mammon shook his head slightly as he went to go and find you. He wasn’t sure whether he hoped the attitude came from you or not...
Leviathan
When the otaku heard the news that the exchange student had a child, he was quite nervous. One human was going to be enough to handle, let alone an additional smaller one.
His fears only worsened when you left him alone with your child for the first time. The two of you had been gaming as you usually did once a week and your child wanted in this time. You stood up at the end of that round, promising that you were going to get the three of you drinks and some snacks. Before Levi could even protest, you had already closed the door behind you.
The demon of Envy’s eyes darted all around his room, looking anywhere but at the small human. That is until your spawn child murmured his name. Snapping his head round to face your child, his eyes widened slightly.
“Okay so I get you don’t really hang out with ‘normies’ or whatever that’s supposed to mean, but if you really don’t wanna be with my parent then tell them that. I’m not gonna let you hurt them like that.” your child confessed, eyes never once leaving his.
After that confession, Leviathan got a faraway look in his eyes as he thought of the resemblance to an anime he’d just finished binge watching last night; ‘my human best friend has a child that is secretly a guardian angel!’.
Snapping out of his reverie, Levi looked down at your child once more and nodded his head profusely. ‘I solemnly swear to you I will protect them.’ he recited the lines the protagonist from the anime had used, but he meant every word he said.
Satan
Being the youngest of his brother’s meant Satan had never really had anybody to be a role model for. Which is why, surprisingly, he felt compelled to look out for your child when he first met you both. Especially because your child was already past the unnecessary crying stage and had a pretty solid understanding of communication.
Your child had never really been an extrovert and so the avatar of wrath hadn’t been too opposed to looking after your carbon copy when you were busy being pulled in every which direction by his brothers. On one of those days, your child had accompanied Satan to the library to find some more books to occupy themselves with; seeing as they weren’t technically enrolled at RAD there was no need for them to complete any class work.
“Hey Satan, can I ask you something?” Your child enquired, glancing up from their novel.
“Hm? What’s on your mind, Y/C/N?”
“Why do you look at my parent like they hung the stars in the sky? And don’t say you don’t, because I spoke to Asmo about it too and he couldn’t agree more.” Your smaller version of yourself asked, tilting their head slightly.
Blinking rapidly in surprise at the question, Satan gawped at your child before shaking his head slightly. “You shouldn’t ask Asmo questions like that. He’s the avatar of lust - not love. I know for a fact he thinks I’m looking at them like-“
“Gross! I don’t need to hear about things like that, I’m gonna go hang out with Simeon if you’re gonna talk about that.” Wrinkling their nose in disgust, your child stood up to leave, packing his books with him. Smiling to himself as he watched Y/C/N leave, he thought to himself ‘I guess I need to have a chat with Y/N’
Asmodeus
The avatar of lust couldn’t help but squeal in delight when he took in the sight of you standing with your child. He had not one, but two new friends to go out clubbing with! What? What do you mean Y/C/N isn’t allowed to go clubbing? Well that’s boring. Oh well, they can always just go shopping together and Asmo can arrange some fashion shows for you and your child. In fact, yesterday he bought the cutest coat and it would suit Y/C/N so well.
Speaking of going shopping together, one night when you and Beel had gone out to Madame Screams to try some of the new ice cream on offer, Asmo had invited Y/C/N back to his room for a self care night after shopping all day. Applying a face mask to his skin and your daughter’s, he laid beside her to let the mask dry.
“Hey Asmo, I have a question for you.” your child stated, staring up at the canopy that covered the demon of lust’s bed.
“If its about that brunette demon that held the door open for you at River Styx he’s single but there’s so many nicer demon’s out there for you and I’m pretty sure he-“
“No! It’s not about him. I admit he was cute but that’s not what I wanted to ask. What I wanted to ask was, whether you were interested in anybody...” your daughter trailed off, suddenly feeling bad for prying.
“Oh honey, while you’re an absolute treasure and I have loved spending time with you lately I don’t think we’d be a very good match at all. If I’m honest I’m more interested in Y/N. I’m so sorry you had to find out this way- why are you laughing?” Asmodeus stopped his spiel of an apology at the sound of your daughter’s chuckles.
“I’M not into you like that either, babe. I only asked for my parent’s sake. They’re head over heels for you and I just wanted to see if you felt the same.” Your daughter confessed, rising from Asmo’s bed to find a washcloth. “When they get back from the ice cream store with Beel, you should totally ask them out. Watch how quickly they’ll stumble to agree.” And with that, your daughter left the avatar of lust alone with his thoughts of you.
Beelzebub
“Did the human bring a snack with them?”
That was the first thing the redhead ever said to you and your teen son. Needless to say it took a while for your son to warm up to Beel after that. When the situation was explained to the glutton felt very guilty afterwards and went above and beyond to make it up to him.
One afternoon when the three of you were supposed to go to a new cafe that had just opened, Lucifer wanted to go over some paperwork with you, and so Beel offered to take your son out anyways and promised to try to save you a cupcake. Your son didn’t look too thrilled at the idea of going out for food with the demon who thought he was the snack, but reluctantly agreed for your sake.
“Look, Beelzebub I have to be honest with you. You seem nice enough and all, but I still don’t trust you especially knowing you could swallow us whole and thought about doing that the first time we met you. But on the flip side, you did protect Luke from Lucifer a while ago. So I suppose I can learn to trust you, is what I’m trying to say.” Y/C/N stated as he brought a mug of spiced tea to his lips, looking over at the demon who went wide eyed at the sudden confession.
Swallowing the rest of the cheesecake in his mouth, Beel nodded earnestly, “No its okay! I’m not surprised you don’t trust me, after what i said to you I wouldn’t blame you if you hated me. I know this probably isn’t what you want to hear, but i care about you, you’re basically family at this point. And I care about Y/N too; quite a bit actually.” By the end of his sentence, the demon’s face was almost as red as his hair.
“Hmph, I figured as much. If you care about them even half as much as you say you do, say something. You might be surprised what you find out.” Your son smirked, leaning back in his seat to take in the blushing demon before him.
Belphegor
Unsurprisingly, your son had a blatant distaste for Belphegor when they met officially. Watching your body fall still in Mammon’s arms to then disappear was enough to send him charging at the sloth demon. Even after Barbatos’ assistance on the matter and bringing you back, Y/C/N held the iciest glare he could muster. Laying a hand on his shoulder, you assured him you were okay and didn’t hurt anymore.
“Put it this way Belphegor. I never want to see you within touching distance of us again. Demon or not, I will not hesitate to swing for you. Nobody hurts my family.” Y/C/N spat, turning on his heel and tugging you with him.
After weeks of awkward meal times, you and Beel hatched a plan to get your son and his twin talking. You had forgiven Belphie for what happened, understanding that he’d had his own family in mind when he attacked you.
“Oh. Y/C/N have you seen Y/N? They wanted me to meet them here.” Belphegor asked, avoiding eye contact with your son the entire time.
“I wanted to ask you the same thing about Beel, he said-” your son was cut off by the sound of the living room door slamming shut and the lock clicking in place. “Is this some kind of joke? Mammon if that’s you and this is your idea of a joke you’re not funny! Open the door!”
There was no answer from the other side of the door, the only sound being that of a pair of retreating footsteps. Sighing in defeat, your son slid down the door and glancing at Belphegor, to see him looking just as uncomfortable as Y/C/N felt. “Well, there’s no telling how long we’re gonna be in here. I feel like I owe you an explanation...” The sloth demon began, wringing his hands together as he prepared to tell your son everything.
A few hours later, you and Beel opened the door slowly to reveal your son and Belphegor dozing on one another. Smiling at each other in victory, the two of you crept closer and wrapped them in one of the blankets on the back of the sofa. You had to admit, this was the most peaceful the two of them had looked in a long time.

--------
People have always intrigued you; their stories and the worlds around them that you’d get to glimpse into if you really paid attention (and you paid attention). There wasn’t anything more exciting to you.
That was why you loved your job at a café, you could observe the people around you with such ease. Some you only got to see for that day, some maybe a few more, but others would come weekly - maybe more. You had a few favourite characters in this little story.
The first was a tall, skinny man with brown hair. He always wore a suit and adored a black coffee every day - to go, obviously. Most of the time he was on the phone, grumbling to some poor human about a task they failed to complete, but the few times he wasn’t were more intriguing. He had a very calm air about him then. Very charming (especially when he tried to flirt with you, to no avail). He always tipped 200 Yen, telling you to treat yourself to something nice - you always wanted to pour his coffee over the expensive suit.
Next was the tired mother and her daughter. Every Friday, 3:35 on the dot, that’s when they showed up. The daughter would squish her cheeks together and gasp at the array of cakes before picking a cheesecake. The mother would smile almost sadly before getting herself whichever tea you’d recommend that day - normally a green tea, but you’d change things up sometimes. They were always a relieving sight. You knew the mother was single, listening as the daughter bragged about what she’d be doing with her dad this weekend. You watched the twinkle in her eye dwindle at the mention of her father, but the mother smiled through it all and smiled so sweetly. Such a brave woman.
And finally, one woman who had held your intrigue for the entire two years she’d been coming. Every single Saturday she’d enter, always ordering a tea and daifuku with anko filling. For the first year, she seemed so hopeful as she nervously rubbed her hands together; the few times you’d actually talked to her, she told you about her boyfriend, how she was waiting for him to call. And for a while, he did. Then slowly, she stopped getting that call.
She only ever missed one week - when you asked her about it the next week, tears pricked in her eyes and she broke down. You took her into the back quickly, ushering away the peering eyes of your co-workers so she could feel secure. You learnt her name, but you’d come to call her Moonlight (something about her just reminded you of the moon), and in turn, she’d call you Sunshine (because something about you reminded her of the sun).
You never talked outside of the café, but she seemed to open up just a little more with each passing week, discovering new things about her that you hadn’t expected. Things that exceeded your expectations. Only once did she show up with three small children in tow (Kado, Joji, and Etsu), and it was absolute hell - but the best day you’d ever worked.
Kado and Joji were truly little demons, just turned 5 and already forces to be reckoned with. Etsu was about to be 3, a beauty already. Despite being their sister, Moonlight acted more like a mother. It was almost sad to see.
Moonlight was somehow so open and yet so closed off at the same time; every inch closer you’d step towards her, she was pushing back. Always at arms reach. You could try and slip past her barriers (if you could figure out which ones actually led to her).
One week, you awaited her arrival with bated breath; something in the air today had you more nervous than usual and you couldn’t quite figure out what it was. You’d just gotten back off of your break when she arrived, smiling so beautifully. “Same as usual?” You chirped, already writing down her typical.
“For me, yes,” she chimed. Something about her was glowing more today - subconsciously, your brows twitched upwards, trying to figure it out what she meant. Your confusion seemed to click with her because she elaborated, “oh, I brought someone with me again. He’s just… I don’t know what he’s doing.”
Almost as if on command, the door to the café opened and in walked a man, a cheeky smile plastered on his lips. Something about him made it impossible for you to not look at him; then his eyes landed on her and you knew you never stood a chance. “What’re you ordering, bitch face?” He asked, snorting as she rolled her eyes.
“Make your own decision, Suga tits.” There’s a chemistry between them that you can’t quite figure out; enough space between them to leave it up to the imagination. Either old friends or lovers, now was the task of figuring out which it was? She glanced down at her phone, brows furrowing - he must have seen in the corner of his eyes because he immediately looked worried.
After he figured out his order, they sat down at a table and kept up their light chatter.
You hadn’t expected her to move on so quickly since whatever heartbreak she’d faced just over a year ago, but you were happy for her. With this boy - Suga, you guessed - she was able to open up and smile so freely. There was nothing forcing it.
You were happy for her, you told yourself.
----
The next week, Moonlight returned by herself, holding her hands in front of her and smiling ever so sweetly. “Hey.” You smiled so brightly, and she returned the gesture (you noted the emptiness in her eyes now that Suga wasn’t here). “Your usual?” You asked, and she nodded. “So, where’s that boy you were with?” You hummed, looking up at her.
“Oh, Suga?” She asked, and you could only nod because you didn’t really know who he was. “He’s got some work to do today; tough life being a university student, I suppose.”
“I wouldn’t know.” You laugh. There’s a questioning look in her eyes, but she slowly manages to piece things together and nods.
“Same. I only know what I know because of Suga and-” there’s a moment of hesitation and her expression falls to a sadness you recognise. You know exactly who she is thinking about in that moment and are quick to distract her.
“So is Suga, like, your boyfriend…?” That works and she looks up at you cackling with laughter, her head tossed back as she clutches her stomach. Her laughter is infectious in the nicest way and you giggle with her.
“God, no!” She calls out, brushing away tears that had formed in the corner of her eyes. A mixture of disgust on her face answers your first question, but it raises so many more in its place. Like a ‘one door closes and twelve more open’ sort of situation. Before you had a chance to ask, she had a chance to explain, “he’s just, I guess, my best friend.”
You nodded slowly and she glanced up at you as you mused, “I see.”
The smirk that tugged at her lips spoke a thousand words. “Why? Do you think he’s cute?” She asked, resting her head on her hand. The warmth that spread to your cheeks was a tell tale sign, but you denied it anyway. She only laughed and brushed you off.
You hoped that that would be the end of that conversation. That you wouldn’t have to face up to these feelings any time soon (because they weren’t really feelings). Of course, Moonlight had other plans.
You were cleaning off the table she’d sat at after she left when you noticed a piece of paper on it. All you could think was oh no.
Carefully, you unfolded the paper, and you were greeted with a little message - obviously from Moonlight. It read:
So, ya like Suga? Perfect, because he told me he thinks you’re cute.
xxx-xxx-xxxx
Go get ‘em :D
You hid the squeal of excitement at the words on the paper, but your co-workers would be sure to question why it was suddenly like you were floating for the rest of the day.
----
Had there ever been someone more perfect than Sugawara Koushi? No!
That was what you thought, of course, because Sugawara Koushi was an angel disguised as a devil. Sure, he liked to play little tricks and tease, and sometimes he could get a little too aggressive with his ways of love. But underneath all that was a soft interior that made your heart melt.
Every interaction with him left you on a high - which meant you were like this on, basically, a daily basis. Who knew that just a few months of dating and a month of officially being together could make your world so full of life of joy.
And the best part? He felt the exact same way.
You’d be sure to thank Moonlight for this opportunity to be with him until the day that you’d die. Without her, you never would have gotten this far; you would have passed up the greatest opportunity for love that you’d known. And for what? You didn’t even know.
“You know, I think you’re pretty cool.” You hummed one afternoon, curled up next to him on his couch, the film you’d been watching not long ago forgotten so you could trace the shapes on his face. Something so soft in his features as he looked at you. God, you just wanted to kiss him, and hold him, so much for so long.
“I think I’m pretty cool, too.” He chuckled, brushing a strand of hair out of your face.
You only laughed and pushed yourself away from him - a small defiance - but he was quick to grab your wrist and pull you back.
“I guess you’re okay, too.” He planted a soft kiss on your forehead and you rolled your eyes.
That was the thing about Sugawara Koushi: his heart was so open and warm to the world around him. To the people who he held near and dear to him. You just happened to be lucky enough to be one of those people.
“I’m more than okay and you know it.” You said, resting your head against his chest and listening to his even heart rate pick up ever so slightly.
You wouldn’t call it love, not yet, not when it’s still so early into it. But you do know that you both care for each other so deeply, more than anyone will ever care about you, and more than anyone will ever care about him.
For a little while, it feels like the whole world only revolves around the two of you.
So much that you can’t see something rising over the horizon.
----
Of course, good things always seemed to get interrupted for you.
Sugawara was your world, but that was the thing about worlds, they’d normally bring along a little something else with them that you might not notice until it’s too late.
For you, that something would be the very thing that brought you together. Moonlight was great - you knew that - and she had no intentions of ever dating Sugawara - or trying to steal him from you. But when they interacted, you couldn’t help but feel inferior. Like you were the third wheel in their world. Like they had a bond that you could never be a part of.
“Are you sure nothing ever happened between you and her?” You’d tease, trying to keep the air lighthearted as he looked at her with a content sigh - his expression switched to that of disgust, and you knew your fears were unwarranted.
Honestly, you don’t really know what you were expecting, you knew they were close when you started dating him. Yet you couldn’t stop the sickening feeling of jealousy twisting your stomach, making your skin crawl. Those feelings only got worse when they’d laugh together about something that happened so many years ago. Moonlight was snorting, clutching her stomach like her life depended on it.
It only made it harder when she depended on him. You knew why - she just simply didn’t have anyone else other than Suga - and you didn’t mind, not at first, not until he’d answer her calls in the middle of your date and leave you wishing you’d never texted him that evening after Moonlight had given you his number. Wishing you’d never met him. Wishing it was just as easy as giving up.
And the more you looked at her, the more you knew you could never compare. Though she looks slightly older for her age, slightly more tired, the beauty she radiates is far more than you have. Her laugh is so contagious; humour perfectly matching his in every way that yours can’t.
You speculated that it was because they’d been together so long - that thought would be correct - but you couldn’t help it. You wanted to be close to him. You wanted what they had. How were you meant to do that?
And so what if you end up reading more into their relationship than you should, a little jealousy is healthy, right? Watching the way they interact and wishing it was you is normal, right? Begging that she’d find someone more captivating and leave him alone for good isn’t a horrible idea, right? That you’d finally get to have some time with him and not feel alone. God, that would be nice.
You resist the urge to cry as she leans into him while they exchange their laughter; Suga glances at you and you offer him a smile. Sure, it was nice they’d invite you on their weekly excursions (you’d pretend that the fact you got a bi-weekly date didn’t affect you), but you were like an awkward piece to the puzzle. You fit, but something was missing.
Or maybe you didn’t fit as much as you thought you did.
----
So maybe you invited her to a night out, just the two of you.
And maybe you started drinking just a little more than you normally would because you were nervous.
And maybe you ended up getting into an argument with her that went something along the lines of you telling her that you hate her because she is always with Suga. And her telling you… something?
Once again, these were all just maybe’s, you couldn’t remember what happened last night at all. Not with the pounding in your head. You felt light and heavy at the same time, and the water Suga kept offering you wasn’t doing you any good.
He ran his hands through your hair and looked down at you sadly as you mumbled into your pillow.
You really wish you could remember what you’d said last night (at least, not exactly). The only thing you can visibly remember was the sickening look of sorrow in her eyes. A look you recognised from some time after she’d ended things with her ex; had your words really hurt her that much? You doubted it, she was probably just putting on some sort of act to try and make you feel bad. You couldn’t feel bad.
Maybe you should have felt bad because Suga kept looking at his phone with worried eyes. Normally, she would have been messaging him so much, checking up on you and making sure that you hadn’t died in the night. Today: nothing.
You wanted to tell him that she’d message soon, but you weren’t sure. “How are you feeling?” He asks, putting his phone to one side and gently cupping your cheek.
“Like shit.” You mumble, nuzzling closer into his warmth, tossing an arm over his body. Suga lets out a soft chuckle as you smile. “How’s Moonlight?” You ask, but it’s half-hearted and you don’t know why.
“I’m sure she’s fine.” He assures you, but there’s hesitation in his voice and it makes your stomach sink. “Did something happen last night?” You can feel his eyes on you, trying to work out why she wasn’t checking up on you. If only you remembered.
“I don’t know.” You admit even though you are aware of something happening. “I can’t really remember anything.” You say. His face shifts, but he looks away before you can fully understand the expression. God, if only there were an easy answer for everything.
That night you manage to distract him from his sadness with snacks and a movie.
If only snacks and a movie could fix everything.
----
It isn’t until he comes home late from work a week later, crying and completely drenched head to toe that you understand something is not right. Something more not right than what you thought.
He tries to avoid your hugs, but gives in and eventually melts into you. He grips the back of your shirt tightly, like he’d fall apart if he let go. Like he’d fall apart if you let him go.
You choose not to care about the fact his tears are soaking through your shirt, or that he’s created a wet spot on the carpet from his drenched clothes, or the light pain as he holds you closer. Right now, he needs you.
It takes some time, but you manage to get it out of him; he’d gone to visit Moonlight after he’d finished work to try and see what was up with her (because she’d stopped calling and messaging him entirely). Apparently, she hadn’t even let him in the door, refused to talk to him about the problem - because you were the problem - and told him to leave her alone.
Even as he tried to get her to open up and talk about it she just refused. Of course, the conversation lasted longer than he thought, but only because Kado and Joji had forced the man inside. Moonlight tried to tell them no, but they weren’t listening to a thing she said (though that wasn’t exactly a new situation).
You tried not to think about how this was most definitely your fault. The fact that his current problems were because of you.
God, you should have just sucked it up, dealt with it. She made him happy - but not as happy as you - she hadn’t done anything wrong. And yet… you were jealous. Why?
Thinking about it made your head hurt, so you focused on rubbing slow circles on his back, humming a soft tune to try and distract both of you from the thoughts that wracked your brain. Maybe it all hurt more because Suga had always been so much stronger than anyone you’d known, and yet, here he was, broken in your arms.
You helped him strip off his clothes, saying, “you wouldn’t want to catch a cold, would you?” And he agreed, letting you whisk him upstairs, running him a bath. His eyes were dull as he looked to the side, barely keeping up any conversation with you.
It hurt. More than you ever thought it would.
----
You really regretted ever thinking that things would be better if Moonlight wasn’t here. If she’d left your life.
The moment she’d left, she seemed to take a part of Suga with her; sure, he was still Suga, he’d tease and and make fun, and you’d end up in laughing fits, but there was something missing in how he works.
You’d watch his eyes light up when his phone buzzed, only to die immediately.
You winced inside with each night that he’d ask you if you’d heard something, anything, because he was worried.
It was like something inside of Suga was programmed to protect Moonlight, but he would never tell you why. Like it was some sort of trade secret between the two of them. Another thing you’d never get a chance to be a part of.
Things became just a little harder after she’d stopped visiting the café. It was abrupt. After almost four years of knowing each other, it was over. She’d taken herself out of your life as well as Suga’s. Did you even have any right to be upset with her?
No.
Every time you watched him jump at the sound of the door, you knew it was your fault, because the disappointment that would follow was more than enough to break your heart a thousand times over. Maybe even more. Definitely more.
You wished you could make this pain go away, you just didn't know how to. If Moonlight was in the picture, then it might end up destroying your relationship with Suga; but if she wasn’t in the picture, then Suga was… well, he was depressed.
He’d smile at you weakly from his end of the couch before he looked away, eyes void of emotion.
You ran your hands through your hair, sighing to yourself as you poured the coffee for a customer, feigning a smile.
----
You wished things weren’t like this.
You wished feelings weren’t messy.
You wished that you knew how to make things better.
Even when Suga told you he’d be okay, you couldn’t help but not believe him.
You bit back the tears in front of him, gave him the sweet kisses that he needed at the moment; when you were alone, it was a different story. You could only feel guilt.
God, you felt stupid. Time didn’t make things better, they made things so much more worse. A few months had passed since your maybe-argument with Moonlight and nothing had changed (though Suga did cling to you considerably more now).
When you were at work one weekend, Suga had found an old box of memories from his high school years. You returned just in time, catching him holding onto an old picture of the third years from his volleyball club.
“What’s that?” You called out from the door frame. He looked up at you, a little surprised, but his face softened and he motioned for you to join him. You did, not even hesitating.
“I found this box,” you glanced around as he explained, humming a little at the small memories that were spread across the floor, “and this is a picture from our last year in high school.” He passed you the picture.
There were two faces you didn’t recognise (another face you knew to be Azumane Asahi. You’d only met him once or twice, but he was very nice - though rather timid).
One belonged to a girl with black hair and glasses, a small smile on her lips, but her eyes were shining with such joy in this moment.
The other face was a boy. He had short brown hair and the most charming smile you’d ever seen. Stood just a little in front of this boy was Moonlight, looking barely younger than she did now, but her eyes were glowing with so much happiness. Next to her was Suga, so relaxed and awash with content that it was almost strange.
“Is that Moonlight?” You asked, checking your facts.
“Yep,” Suga nodded, looking at her with a sigh.
“I didn’t know she was part of the volleyball team…” you hummed, resting your head on his shoulder.
You can’t see his face, but his tone of voice is enough to tell you what you need to know. “She wasn’t.” A question lingers on the tip of your tongue; you don’t need to ask it, he’s already explaining, “she, um…” he pointed to the boy with the short brown hair. “This is Sawamura Daichi, he was… her boyfriend.”
“Oh…” you were smart enough to fill in some gaps, but Moonlight had never told you what had actually happened between them.
“You know,” Suga sniffed, starting to pack away the things back into the box, “I know things get hard sometimes. And that I’m really close to Moonlight, but I hope you know you never had anything to worry about. I knew that girl for almost six years. I’ve seen her at her worst, never at her best though.” You nod, not really sure how to respond. “Before I met you, we were the only people who really understood each other; I’m in love with you, though.”
You feel your heart warm at the sound of that; yet something in his eyes kept you from feeling so elated.
“You’re my everything, but…” he paused. Of all places to pause, he paused there. And why?
You knew why.
Like how every world needed a sun, Suga needed you. You provided him warmth; helped him to thrive; you brought light into his life that he could never describe. But worlds need more than just a sun to thrive. Worlds need moons to hold back the tides; to light up the darkness; to reflect your love further and deeper.
And right now, your world needed his moon.

Io Asteria Voice Lines
Next up's Io, the last member of my main three Nebula girls! Let me know if you want to see lines for the others! (I can't promise all nine for fear of clogging this blog with Nebula content, but Stelle and Phea are definitely priority ones.). Enjoy!
Self-Introduction 1: The name's Io Asteria. I just came here for intel, so don't get too used to me. With any luck, I'll be outta here before you know it, so don't you dare give me a reason to miss this place, okay?
Self-Introduction 2: Hello, honored citizen. I am Io Asteria and I am most pleased to meet your--gyah, don't you dare walk in on me when I'm trying to practice my professional introductions! I swear I'll fucking kill you if this happens again!
(Note: Io is the daughter of the Manufacturer and one of Olympia's three current presidents. Since the Manufacturer kidnapped her and faked her death when she was very young, she wasn't really raised in a presidential household and...it shows. Hence why she works on looking more "polished" to the public now that they know she's alive.)
Personal Story
Story Chapter End 1: The Firebrands...they've gotta be the best path to my revenge, right?
Story Chapter End 2: If I'm a mad princess who kills for what she wants...what stopped me from killing her?
(Note: Io did not take the Actress revelation well at all and it was frankly a miracle she didn't Witch out then and there. She did, however, mercilessly attack the Manufacturer, and since he's her father and people didn't know the full story, the Actresses at Star Corporations assume she's some kind of madwoman. She starts to assume this herself until another magical girl, Xing, confronts her for trying to join the Firebrands. Xing asks Io if she can really kill her, since she's one of the Firebrands' biggest enemies. Io doesn't, which makes her question if she really is who the rumors make her out to be.)
Story Chapter End 3: Valvi-nee's the only family I've got now, so I've gotta fight for us to stay together!
Story Select 1: How the hell can I not hate my father? He started all this!
Story Select 2: I'll do whatever it takes to get back to them.
Story Select 3: If it's for the ones I love, I don't care what I've gotta do!
Story Select 4: I'm sorry, Xing. I guess I can't be a Firebrand after all.
Story Select 5: Is it normal to hate someone enough to try to kill them?
Story Select 6: Your gang captured my friend, so you ain't getting off that easy!
Stats
Strengthening Complete: My lasers are all fired up and ready for action!
Strengthening Max: I'm so strong now, I could vaporize a Firebrand just for lookin' at me! Relax, I'm kidding!
Episode Level Up: I'm Nebula through and through, past alliances be damned!
Magia Level Up: If only my father could see how strong I am now. I bet I could almost convince him to put a stop to all this with enough magic.
Magical Release 1: I'll never stop bein' amazed at how generous Valvi-nee is. She should hate me after everything my family's done to hers.
Magical Release 2: Back when I was out on the streets homeless, she took care of me. Even once she found out I was a dirty Tsukimura...
Magical Release 3: God knows I couldn't forgive like that. That's why she deserves a happy life more than any of us. Certainly more than me.
Awaken 1: This is where the Manufacturer came from. These magical girls inspired him to make us. That's why I gotta fight for them!
Home Screen
Login (first login): The Actress name my father gave me was "Altesse," or "highness" to you. I ditched it and became Chevalier as soon as I found out I didn't wanna be the one being saved. I might not be a kind knight, but I'll protect ya all the same.
Login (morning): School is so pointless when you're an Actress like me. I mean, what're they gonna do, make me write 2000 words on the horrors of war when I was made to be part of all that? Valvi-nee'll kill me if I skip, though.
Login (noon): Why aren't I sitting with anyone? All the rich girls at Mizuna are way outta my wheelhouse 'cause I was raised to be a warrior instead of an heiress. Maybe I should try some of the regular gals who tested in instead.
Login (evening): Wait, is that actually a video store over there? I should probably be getting back, but I gotta check it out. These things all closed by the time I escaped Star Corporations, and 'sides, I still haven't decided what movie I'm gonna watch tonight.
Login (night): Hey, you goin' to the midnight premiere of that horror movie in a few hours? I swear, the franchise is so bad, but I've always gotta be the first to see them. Even a student director like me could do better than that!
Login (other): Leo-nii volunteers at a hospital and was born with healing magic, so he helps us out a lot on cases. I get that both presidential kids couldn't up and leave the country, but I miss him so much already.
Login (AP full): I might be neutral, but I ain't sitting out when it comes to Actress work. Stelle and Valvi-nee need all the Soul Gems they can get, and I like takin' out Witches anyway. Anything to keep me from going at some of the shady magical girls in town.
NOTE: Io really, really hates Promised Blood and Neo-Magius due to the former's status as a Firebrand-like magical girl gang and the latter's association with the Wings of the Magius (whose brainwashing techniques she opposes most of all since her friend Stelle was brainwashed for many years). Of the Nebula members, Io has come the closest to breaching the neutrality contract, since her and Juri being in the same room together practically guarantees that a fight will break out between them.
Login (BP full): Can the Mirror Witch really make copies of anything? Even your past selves? 'Cause when I think about the girl I was back then and how I believed all my father's lies, I just wanna throttle her! Maybe I'll finally get the chance!
Tap 1: There's that cheesecake shop they were talking about... Valvi-nee wanted caramel and Koto wanted mint. I told Koto I didn't want anything to do with that nasty stuff, but whatever. I'm feeling nice today.
Tap 2: People always tell me I get mad real easy, but that ain't the case. Just don't hurt my friends or call me by my father's name, and you're good. Can't say what'll happen to you if you call me Io Tsukimura, though.
Tap 3: Surprised to see me in a Mizuna uniform? I pulled some strings to get in. Mizuna can brag about havin' a president's daughter, and they'll write me one hell of a reference letter for film school. I ain't proud of it, but that's how it's done, y'know?
Tap 4: Mom and Leo-nii just found out about me a few months ago, and it's already leaked all over. The lost First Daughter, alive all this time and all that. Don't get me wrong, having them back is awesome but...I'm just glad the paparazzi aren't breathing down my neck here.
Tap 5: Every rebel leader from the movies gotta have a bruiser to back him up, and I don't mind playing that role. If it's what I have to do to keep Valka and Omega out of trouble, then consider it done.
Tap 6: My wings retract when I'm not in Actress form, so looking human is super annoying. I wanna stretch them out all the time, but all the "out" Actresses at my old school went Firebrand. They kept pestering me so damn much that I just go to school like this now.
Tap 7: "You're a light Actress like her. If you killed the Valkaine Project, you'd be at the top of the food chain." That was the last thing that Firebrand said to me before she hit the pavement. Just hearing that made my blood boil so hard, the other Nebula girls had to tear me off her.
Tap 8: Tsukuyo and I hang out sometimes. I never thought I'd find someone in Kamihama who went through the same stuff as me, so it's nice getting tips from her on the whole estranged twin thing. I'm still gonna make sure she loosens up a ton by the time I leave, though!
NOTE: I have a whole semi-event planned in my head where Io finds out about Tsukuyo's secret and asks her for advice. She kinda intimidates Tsukuyo a bit at first (a callback to her interrogation in the Endless Solitude arc), but they eventually become odd friends. The rest of the event consists of Io taking Tsukuyo out of her comfort zone, trying to get her to rebel more, etcetera. I also feel like she'd be good friends with Kyoko.
Tap 9: I--I can't go over there...there are too many people. You have to get me out of here! *clears throat and attempts to return to her normal personality*. You gotta understand, I don't do crowds. Back at Star Corporations, I was a special experiment kept under complete isolation and...God, you gotta get me outta here right now!
Battle Start: Oh, they're askin' for it now! C'mon!
Battle Victory 1: Ha! They were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't even stop to think if they should!
NOTE: Yes, this is meant to be a Jurassic Park reference. Io is that much of a movie nerd, and fully intends on screaming the actual quote at her father the minute they meet again.
Battle Victory 2: All right, everyone's safe! Now I just gotta make sure the enemy's completely withdrawn.
Battle Victory 3: If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.
Doppel: We're finally together, Mom.
Dying: You'll never win in the end!
NOTE: I spent a long time trying to phrase this before remembering the She-Ra theme and figuring a negative version of it would flow best.

OKAY WELL I REALLY WANT TO RANT ABOUT MY OCS SO YEAH Y'ALL HAVE TO SIT THROUGH THIS FOR A BIT
Page is super self conscious, that's why he's literally the only one in his immediate family who wears a mask.
Lil Meg was found rummaging in the trash by Jiri, she immediately bit Jiri's wings upon being picked up.
The last time Twist had more than two airheads they almost broke their leg after forgetting that their hand isn't attached to their body and tried to dangle from a tree. They were not allowed candy since.
Claymore LOVES coffee. It doesn't have the same effect to him as it does to others (cuz hes an alien) but he likes it.
Kinda obvious but Claymore smells like clay.
Page has a strawberry garden in his and Twist's backyard.
Fluff brings Claymore coffee from the Cafe whenever she visits her brothers.
Jiri, who started as just my internet persona, is now considered a universe jumping being. This is why she plays a roll in Lil Meg meeting Page and Twist despite not technically belonging in their universe.
Tove and Fluff have been friends since 7th grade.
Draca likes all meat EXCEPT for turkey, for some reason. Nobody knows why but that's the ONLY meat she won't eat. She is why ham is present at family dinners during this universe's version of thanksgiving.
Yes, they have a different version of thanksgiving in this world.
Lee, Hunter's daughter, plays Smash Bros and mains Kirby.
She has also completed every run in Undertale. Including all the neutral endings.
Fluff likes musicals. Her current favourite is The Lightning Thief musical. Totally not just me projecting on my own characters
Draca struggled with her sexuality for a while because she was never introduced to the concept of sexuality (not her mom's fault, you can't expect a dragon to think it's important to specify. Her mom is very supportive.)
Probably cursed but in this universe the Cats musical is called Humans and Humans (2019) is just as cursed as Cats (2019).
Fluff makes great smoothies.
Hunter has a Reddit account SOLELY because he frequents r/roastme. He's very well known there.
Lee has TONS of Worms-on-strings. She sells them for two dollars a worm at school. She has multiple packs of thirty sitting in her closet.
Fluff loves buying succulents. She has three on her nightstand.
While Fluff has a green thumb, Draca has a black thumb of death. She can't even water a plant without killing it.
Draca is lactose intolerant.
Which is a real shame because she loves cheesecake.
Fluff's tail gets REALLY heavy after a shower and she spends 30 minutes after showering using a blow dryer on it.
Lee has Minecraft pajamas. Tons of them. More than just the Enderman onesie.
Amari has a tiktok account with 10k followers.
Hunter does his best to be a good dad to Lee. He goes all out on birthday decorations and themes.
The Boone-Kless family get together once a month for DnD. Draca's mom hosts for the atmosphere, she also roleplays the bbeg because it hits different when a 50 foot long dragon is the one monologuing.
Lee has ADHD and uses fidget toys and sensory stuff.
Page loves trail mix.
There is literally no reason for twist to not have an arm I just decided why not and gave them a floating hand and no arms. Their twin sister is perfectly normal.
Oh yeah they have a twin sister.
While uncle Alistair could have raised the Boone kids, he was already dealing with 2 year old Adya and Twist so he didn't want an infant and a six year old to worry about.
The Boone kids were raised by grandma and grandpa Uroe instead.
Fluff was 4 and Hunter was 9 when they found Claymore and his little crash site. (I'll talk about Claymore's story in a separate post.)
Lee WILL talk your ear off about her special interests.
Despite everyone in this universe being furries, pets do still exist. It's like a monkey-human situation.
Fluff wants a pet snake.
Both Fluff and Page are eggnog monsters. During the holidays, it's best to get your cup before they even know it's in the house or you won't get any.
Draca is a great cook. Fluff on the other hand, is better at baking.
Page and Fluff bond over baking.
As much as she loves the latte art Fluff can do, Lee is no longer allowed more than one (1) cup of coffee a week.
Nobody knows why Hunter and Fluff's parents had a hit on them. It's a cold case.
Hunter has nightmares about his parents.
Hunter made some mistakes as a teen and as a result, is a single dad. Lee's mom wasn't a nice person. He blames himself.
Draca can breathe fire but she doesn't use it often. When she gets tired, little puffs of smoke come out of her nose.
Switching universes for a sec, the largest age gap between the Test Subjects is 3 years (Sty 13, Carmen 16)
The youngest known subject was 9 but the "researchers" felt like they were too annoying and stubborn to deal with.
The current youngest known subject is 12. They are not central to the story. If it's any consolation, the Test Subjects do end up busting out the others eventually.
The Test Subjects were captive for 2 years. Adam was 13. Cam was 13. Sty was 10 (and a half!).
After busting out; Adam, Cam, and Sty helped Carmen out. As a result, freeing Julie as well.
Julie is an asshole and never gets redeemed in any way. She manipulated and took advantage of Carmen and deserves what she gets.
Not a single main character in The Test Subjects is straight. Not one.
Adam is aro ace.
Cam is an ace lesbian.
Sty is a demi boy (they/them and he/him) and gay.
Carmen is a lesbian.
Julie is.... Well.... She's Julie. She doesn't care. She's pan, I guess.
Cam spent MONTHS stumbling around before Adam and Sty just went "nope, we are GETTING you a cane"
The "researchers" didn't give two shits about the subjects comfort or pain. They'd regularly perform horrible stitching and this resulted in them just saying "if it bothers you so much, fix it yourself".
Basically the subjects performed surgery on each other to PROPERLY stitch up whatever transplants they had.
They also bandaged them poorly, so the subjects would have their "roommates" fix it.
The rooms they were kept in had one "bed" that they either fought over or took turns on.
They weren't kept in the best condition is what I'm saying.
Carmen is the mom friend of the group.
If I could draw it right, Carmen would have a lip piercing. We'll have to settle for earrings for now.
On the topic of piercings, Draca would definitely have an eyebrow piercing if her scales didn't get in the way.
Speaking of Draca, she was a very rebellious teenager. One time she graffitied a huge green dragon on the side of a building that cut down a ton of trees in front of her mom's cave.
Speaking of Draca's mom, she's bisexual and currently dating a Sapper named Trix.
Back to the dnd thing, here are their most played classes.
Draca tends to play barbarians or paladins. Real tank-y classes.
Fluff plays druid or sorcerer.
Claymore likes playing bard.
Hunter tends to go for rangers.
Twist likes playing a wild mage.
Page prefers wizards or warlocks.
When they let her play, Lee plays a Cleric.
Mipos, Draca's mom, never told Draca what kind of dragon they are.
Lee decorates her room with stickers and posters.
These are the Boone-Kless fam's current PCs

A ZOMBIES Christmas Chapter 4
Zed picked at the cheesecake, making small talk with the surrounding cousins, his free hand holding Addison’s. Never in his life did he think he’d be here – fairly popular in integrated school, having dinner with his human girlfriend’s family, playing football and it being a casual dinnertime conversation.
Maybe he should have known, or at least suspected, that there was still a chance that things could turn south. But, despite everything, Zed was an optimist. Dinner had gone well. Dessert had been smooth. He’d gotten along with Addison’s relatives. And Addison had been free to be herself, wig-free, all night.
“EVERYONE GET BACK! ZOMBIE!”
Zed instinctively jumped back as Mr. Buchanan crept closer, knocking over the stacked folding chairs leaning against the couch. “Mr. Buchanan, I’ve been here all night. I came with Addison,” he ducked as the older man wildly swung in his general direction, eyes shining.
“You stay away from my granddaughter, rotter!”
Zed’s mind was racing, his incoherent thoughts rambling through how to reconnect with Mr. Buchanan as a person, and not the monstrous zombiephobe currently in front of him. He wasn’t sure what had happened to suddenly polarize Mr. Buchanan into seeing him as a zombie and not Addison’s boyfriend. Try as he might, there was nothing he could say that would change the old man’s mind. The cheer championship as a revolution had only affected so many humans in Seabrook – the entire town was a cheerleading town, they liked to win, and the zombies hadn’t won cheer. They had won football, but cheer was the top sport and they had lost. He was irrevocably and deeply in love with Addison, but he wasn’t being seen as a person. He was a monster. At the end of the day, he was still the same sort of monster whom had eaten the older man’s ear.
Addison threw herself between her boyfriend and her grandfather. “I wasn’t going to come tonight, exactly because of this. I’d thought, pretty stupidly looking back, that maybe if we were both here, nobody would say anything to our faces. Because it’s not like anybody in this family has ever been supportive of me being who I am. But maybe if I had Zed, if I had the one person in this town, the whole world, who supported and loved me unconditionally, it might not be so bad.”
“Even a freak like you is still human, Addison,” Mr. Buchanan said quietly.
Addison scoffed. “You just threatened my boyfriend, who has been nothing but a perfectly wonderful guest at our Christmas dinner, for no reason except that he’s different. Well, we’re all different. Zed is quite possibly the kindest and sweetest person I’ve ever met. He’s my boyfriend, he’s a zombie, and I love him. I’ve got freaky white hair. I’m still human, but even that has always been enough for my own family to turn against me. If we were all honest with each, I bet everyone in this room has something they’ve been hiding from the rest of the family!” She exhaled harshly, running a hand through her hair. “Zed’s not the only monster in this house.”
With that, Addison took Zed by the hand and shakily lead him back to the kitchen. She pulled him down into a tight embrace, sinking onto the linoleum floor. “I am so sorry about him,” she murmured. Zed could hear her voice thicken with emotion, could smell her mind spiking with adrenaline.
“It’s not your fault.” He wished there was something he could say to make her feel better. Of course, it always stung whenever he heard people saying things about zombieism, but he had learned to roll with it over the past fifteen years. Sometimes, most times, it was easier to simply walk away. “Do you want to go?”
Addison laughed hollowly, though there was no real malice present. “Shouldn’t I be asking you that question?”
Zed shrugged. “They’re your family.”
There was a light tap on the door and Zed looked up to see one of Addison’s cousins standing in the doorway.
“What do you want, Brandon?” Addison asked him bitterly, glancing at him before turning back to her boyfriend.
“Grandpa’s mostly calmed down now… I’m sorry.” His apology, though genuine, was futile as he was not responsible for his grandfather’s behaviour. “I think the people most upset right now are Aunt Missy and Uncle Dale. They always were more obsessed with perfection…. Except maybe Mom and Dad with Bucky’s cheer stuff.”
Addison was quiet, silently considering the sincerity of her cousin’s statement. Zed was quiet, too, wondering what the next best thing to do would be. This was exactly the sort of situation that his father had been worried about when he’d made his offer to come out and take them home early.
“Zed,” the zombie looked up as Brandon addressed him by name, “I’ll drive you back to Zombietown myself if you want to leave. I can’t say anything for the rest of the family, and frankly right now I don’t really want to, but I wouldn’t blame you if you guys left early.”
“Uh, thanks.” Zed got up from the floor, offering Addison his hand and helping her up. No matter what happened next, they would still have to go back and face her family before leaving, whether that was at the natural conclusion of Christmas dinner or bailing early with Brandon or calling Zevon. However, Zed had no idea what that would be. Despite everything, he was still just a kid who had wanted to spend the holiday with his girlfriend.
Zed’s eyes widened as he caught sight of the time on Addison’s watch. “Shit,” he cursed lowly, heartrate accelerating to near-human levels. “I gotta go. Brandon, I can honestly say it was a pleasure to meet you. Addy, thank your parents again for the invitation. Mayor Missy’s cooking was wonderful, as always.” Addison checked the time, immediately understanding why Zed had hurriedly changed the topic.
Dale entered the kitchen just as his daughter and her boyfriend ran out.
“What’s going on in here?” He asked Brandon, a little too casually to be entirely sincere.
“Addy and Zed are leaving,” Brandon said bluntly. “It’s nearly curfew and I’m surprised they stuck around this long, to be honest.” He caught sight of his cousin and the zombie carefully walking down the stairs to the door. “Uncle Dale, I’d thought things were changing here. Tell my parents I’m leaving. Or don’t. I don’t think it would make a difference. See you next Christmas.”
Brandon left his uncle spluttering by himself in the kitchen and started his car, slowly starting towards Zombietown. He had caught up to his cousin in less than a minute. “You kids want a ride?”
“Won’t Aunt Becky be seriously mad at you?” Addison hesitated.
Brandon laughed. “It’s not like I live there, Addy. She can be as pissed as she likes. Doesn’t affect my life. Where do you kids want to go?” He unlocked the doors. He watched his cousin looking at her boyfriend – how her whole face softened as she met his eyes, how they clasped hands as soon as they were settled in the backseat.
Home. But the associated imagery had nothing to do with the house they had just left.
“The barrier,” she said simply.
“I’m not dropping you kids off in the middle of the street.” Brandon rolled his eyes. “What’s your address, Zed?”
Had any other human asked, Zed would have never answered. But this was the one member of Addison’s family who hadn’t been afraid to treat both of them as regular people. Zed had begun to trust the human.
“Z-224a. Right at the end of the last road, by the wall.” He saw the curtains in Eliza’s window flutter closed as Brandon’s car approached. It’d be fine.
Brandon pulled up along the driveway, headlights briefly illuminating the block before he killed the engine.
“Where are you going to go?” Addison asked, still strapped into the backseat. Zed drew his hand back from where he had reached for the door handle, not having considered what Addison’s cousin would do after leaving Christmas dinner.
“Home. Away from Seabrook, away from our family.”
“Isn’t that, like, two and a half hours?”
“Four. We moved upstate to Syracuse a few years back for Quinn’s university. Med biotech – basically a clinical medical lab technician. Lots of testing.”
“Quinn. I haven’t heard about Quinn, before,” Addison looked at her cousin curiously. “There’s usually some ‘news’ about you whenever Mom and Aunt Becky gossip on the phone. Not that Mom would ever call it gossip. She’s ‘sharing in her sister’s concern for her eldest son’.” Addison rolled her eyes.
“Believe me, my mother has no clue that Quinn even exists.” Brandon turned around to face them, his knee tucked awkwardly under the gearshift. “If she did, nobody would ever hear the end of it. In hushed whispers, of course, but still.”
“I get it,” Addison twirled a strand of her hair. “I’ve thought about leaving, but…” Her eyes drifted over to Zed. Out the window, she saw the light strands flicker out. “Hey, I think your dad knows we’re back.”
Zed glanced out the window. “Yeah.”
“Not to make things weird, but I should probably go home. Can’t exactly go back to Syracuse with you, Brandon. Normally if I need to get away for the night, I’d go see Bree but since it’s Christmas…”
“You can stay here,” Zed quickly offered, before blanching. “One of us on the couch, obviously. I’ll give you one of my hoodies…if I have any left,” he grinned.
“You know, this would probably be the part where I should say something, but I think you kids are more responsible than most of the adults in the family. Especially since you’re not going to be alone.” Brandon unlocked the doors.
“We should go,” Addison caught her cousin’s eye. “If Brandon’s going home, he’s got a long drive ahead of him. Thank you so much.”
There was a pause. “Yeah,” Brandon said finally. “Stay in touch, Addy.” Addison nodded, giving her cousin a quick, one-armed hug from the backseat.
Zed waved his hand as he ducked out of the car, stretching. “Let’s get inside.” He took Addison’s hand as they walked to the door, quickly and quietly unlocking it. They toed out of their shoes, creeping up the stairs to Zed’s room. Zed grabbed a couple pairs of sweats and tee shirts, leaving one on the bed for Addison as he went into the bathroom. He knocked lightly a few minutes later, and Addison opened the door.
“I brought you one of Zoey’s hair ties,” he murmured. “Thought you might want to tie your hair back.”
Addison smiled tiredly. “Thanks.” Instead of passing her the hair tie, Zed sat on the bed behind her and quickly braided her hair into a short plait. When he had finished, Addison leaned back against his chest for a moment before she got up. Zed watched as she walked over to the chair on the other side of the room, picking up the quilt and pillow.
“Hey, you’re sleeping here. I’ll take the couch,” Zed took the bedding from his girlfriend, knowing that she would protest.
“Zed,” Addison started, but Zed shook his head.
“I’ll see you in the morning, gorgeous.” Zed leaned against the doorframe, watching as she thought about pressing. They were both exhausted from their eventful night.
“Gar gar ga za,” she walked over and hugged him.
“Yeah. I gar gar ga za you, too. Grodge garzeep,” he murmured, kissing her forehead.
“Grodge garzeep,” she repeated sleepily, watching as he left. She waited until she heard him settle on the couch before pulling back the sheets. Everything smelled like Zed, and she pulled the sheet tighter, sighing happily. There would be consequences to deal with in the morning, but right now, they were together and they were safe.

Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century Fanfiction
Meet the Family
Sherbeth
Holmes meets the Lestrade family.
Sherlock Holmes would admit to rarely feeling nervous. He had stared down James Moriarty numerous times, fallen from great heights and found himself in life-threatening situations on an almost regular basis and never bat an eye at it. The situation he currently found himself in was not like any he had found himself in and he was a bit anxious.
Having been courting Beth for almost a year, it was time to make the trek to meet her family in America. Holmes had spoken to most of her immediate family previously, her parents, her twin brother and her grandfather, the Lestrade family patriarch via holophone but they were not the ones who concerned him. He was being introduced to the entire Lestrade family, aunts and cousins at a family dinner at her grandfather’s house, in Holmes’ honor. Beth explained to him that he was sort of a mythic hero to the family, his cases told to the younger generations like fairytales and how Gregory Lestrade worked right alongside the famous detective.
While he does own the infamous Inverness and deerstalker, that is decidedly ‘country wear’ for him. He had to wonder if he needed to pull out those iconic items just for the family. Holmes always dresses smartly; a finely tailored suit and tie are his staples while conveying an anachronism. His pocket squares always accent the color of his tie and his black leather shoes are always shined to perfection.
“Should I bring these?” Holmes asked as they packed, holding a brown deerstalker and matching Inverness with a gold clasp and buckles on the sleeves.
Beth cackled, “First, you’ll swelter in the heat. Second, they know you’re not the character the world knows. Just be yourself.”
Holmes never felt compelled to live up to his literary caricature, not that he believed that that was what the family was expecting, but when you are meeting your significant other’s family who seem to have a high regard for you, you feel a tad nervous regardless. Not only that, but this was the family he had put in charge of his final wish, to be reanimated. If the process went sideways, he feared that anyone else would not be objective enough to know when it was time to reinter him. He couldn’t express how grateful and indebted he felt. Still waters run deep within the great detective and he steeled his nerves. Sherlock Holmes had other matters to worry about during this holiday.
Inspector Gregory Lestrade’s great-grandson, Andrew left London and moved to America where he started a family. The Lestrade family still resides in the same city Andrew settled in. Policing was a strong tradition in the family, with Beth’s great grandmother, grandfather, father, brother and forefathers and foremothers working with the local police department.
Holmes and Lestrade had flown from London early in the morning. Beth spent most of the flight asleep on his shoulder. He with noise-canceling earbuds, listening to an audiobook. Matt left a car for them at the airport. Once Holmes stepped out of the air-conditioned building, the oppressive heat and humidity of Beth’s home state assaulted him, despite the night air. Beth wasn’t too keen on going back home during the summer months, saying that the weather was one of the reasons she left. This was the only time she could get enough time off work to do so.
“How do you stand such weather? I feel as though I need gills just to breathe!” Holmes complained.
Beth laughed, “You’ll get used to it. Wait until its noon and it's one hundred plus degrees, then you can complain. Ever see a tornado, Holmes?” She teased.
“I’d rather not.”
As Beth drove, she pointed out local interests; this place is where famous so and so got their start, someone of prominence died right there. They left the small metropolis and drove on a dark, rural skyway dotted with houses, cemeteries, farms and the county water tower. After a twisty skylane lined with the tops of trees, a small burg emerged.
“I wrecked my first car there. Totaled it. Wasn’t my fault.”
“That place has the best cheesecake.”
“That’s Grandpa’s house,”
“I had my prom here,”
Beth dropped the speed as they pulled into a neighborhood and a home at the center of the cul-de-sac. Matt’s car was in the driveway, no less too excited to meet the great detective to wait until the dinner.
“Ready?” Beth asked.
Holmes beamed confidently, “My dear, you make it sound as though I am meeting my judge, jury, and executioner.”
Beth made a face that cast doubt on that logic. He may be Sherlock Holmes, but he was still the man dating their daughter/sister/niece. He needed to live up to their standards.
They walked in and the sleeping home sprung to life. Matt and her father David, previously asleep on the couch and recliner in front of the tv jolted awake at the sound of the door opening.
“Beth?!” Tresa Lestrade called from the hall, eager to see her daughter. Tresa was a sprite of a woman, short and petite with brown hair and warm brown eyes.
An old brown, greying boxer with floppy jowls named Stewart hid conspicuously behind the couch, warily watching this new human. His stranger danger alarms were going off.
Matt scrambled from the couch to Holmes and Lestrade. “Oh my god, you’re really him! Holy shit, dude!” he gushed, “I mean, yeah, I’ve talked to you on the phone but gah! You’re really here! Can I get a selfie, an autograph? Oh my god, this is so cool! Hey, so about that Red-Headed League plot hole…”
“Matt, calm down. You’re going to have a heart attack,” Beth chided, “Sorry about him, I think that cage training isn’t working,” She teased her twin. He was so awestruck by Holmes that he let it slide.
Holmes smiled good-naturedly, shaking Matt’s hand, “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you in person.”
“Out of the way, out of the way, shoo!” Tresa urged, trying to get to her daughter, pushing her son and the 250-year-old detective.
She hugged Beth tightly, showering her with kisses, “You need to come around more! I can’t go so long without seeing you!”
“I know, mom, I know.”
David Lestrade joined his family at the door. David was a tall, burly man with more salt than pepper hair and beard, “It’s an honor to meet you, Mr. Holmes. I’d never thought I’d ever get to see you standing, let alone in my own doorway.” He said, offering his hand.
Holmes took it, “Yes, I do owe your family an abundance of gratitude. I would not be here today without you all. I simply cannot express it.” Holmes was struck by how much David looked like a larger Gregory Lestrade.
Tresa turned to Holmes, “I’m speechless. It’s really you.”
“You have a lovely home, madam.”
“She’s cleaned, like, all day for you guys,” Matt said.
Tresa laughed, “Well, on that note, I’m going back to bed. Matt, can you grab their bags, please? Put them in Beth’s old room. Beth, I’m sure you can show Mr. Holmes around from here?”
“Please, call me Sherlock.”
“You’ll have to give them time, something about showing proper respect and whatnot,” Beth said.
“Why do you still call him Holmes?” Matt argued.
Beth shrugged, “Force of habit. Hafta on the job though.”
“Whatever,” Matt said dismissively as he and David carried in the luggage.
Matt stretched and groaned like a Yeti, “Yeah, I’m going to bed, too. Night.”
“Don’t you have a place of your own?” Beth jeered.
“Yeah, I don’t feel like driving back only to come back in a few hours,” Matt answered simply.
“You live, like, five miles from here. You just want to hang out with Sherlock, you nerd!”
“I’m a nerd!? You’re dating him! What does that make you?”
“Kids!” David barked.
Holmes was enjoying the comedic scene in front of him. The Lestrade residence was so different than his own growing up. It felt like a library where you couldn’t speak. Here, it was lively. It truly was a home.
Matt grumbled as he stalked off down the hall. David turned to his daughter. David hugged Beth, their foreheads touching, “Oh how I missed you.”
“I missed you, too, Dad.”
David regarded his daughter for a moment, then Holmes and followed Tresa to bed.
“I’m sure you noticed the elephant in the room; Stewart over there trying to hide. He’s a few bulbs short of a full Christmas tree. He’s friendly but a doofus.”
Holmes slowly approached the dog. When he was at a respectful distance, he offered his hand. Stewart sniffed it and promptly sneezed into his hand.
Beth howled with laughter as Holmes cleaned his hand with a kerchief.
“C’mon, I’m beat.” Beth said, leading Holmes to their room for their stay.
It wasn’t lost on Beth that her childhood idol was now sharing her childhood bedroom with her. Most of her things had long since been packed away and sent to London, leaving little trace of a young Beth Lestrade who spent hours reading Watson’s journals, the published casebooks or watching anything Holmes related. Now, it was simply a guest bedroom with neutral bedding and accents. The garish red walls that Beth begged to be painted when she was fourteen was covered up by Tresa as soon as possible.
Pictures of the family dotted the room; on the desk was a replica of a daguerreotype of Inspector Gregory Lestrade himself. The senior pictures of Matt and Beth framed the window; Matt with an aw-shucks grin in blue jeans and his letterman’s jacket and Beth, her hair and makeup expertly done, in a blue dress. Her eyes, even then, soul-piercing, could make you confess your mortal sins.
Matt and Beth’s childhood and teenage trophies remained. Countless awards of varying sizes, colors and shapes stood on a bookcase by the door; Beth’s for karate and gymnastics, Matt’s for American football.
In the dark room, the lovers turned to face each other in bed, legs intertwining under the sheets. They whispered as to not wake the family.
“You’ve never told me what your parents were like.”
Holmes shrugged, caressing Lestrade’s arm with the tips of his fingers, watching goosebumps arise. “There’s nothing much to say, really. They were both teachers and strict authoritarians. They were firm believers in the ‘spare the rod, spoil the child’ method. Once, when I was a young lad, eight or nine years of age or so, I punched Mycroft in the face, knocking out one of his teeth. Mother shut me in a closet and promptly forgot about me until morning.”
“Jeez, Holmes, I’m sorry.”
“Nothing to be sorry about, my dear. I bear no resentment for them. Mycroft and I both knew we were loved, though the sentiment was rarely uttered. We were not abused and rarely went without. Our parents simply had their own way of doing things.”
“I once punched a boy who had been teasing me and Dad took me out for ice cream as a reward. Okay, what about Mycroft?” Lestrade asked.
“I suppose you can say we had the typical older brother/younger brother relationship. He found me annoying and to be a burden. I do not wholly disagree with this assessment. When he went out with friends or to buy candy, Mother would insist he take me. I was a curious child and had to examine anything I found interesting, rocks, dirt, discarded newspapers. I would follow people I found interesting, wanting to learn about them. I most certainly slowed him down. My turn. Why did you leave?” Holmes asked, admiring how the moonlight cast its glow on her face.
“I wanted to make my family proud and join the Yard.” She replied, toying with and caressing his hand and arm. She locked eyes with him, a mischievous glint sparkling in her eyes. “Besides, someone had to take care of your wrinkly ass while you were in that honey.”
Holmes drew her close, Lestrade giving a startled yelp, “I didn’t hear any complaints from you about it before we left London,” he husked in her ear, kissing her neck.
~*~
Morning came far too early for the weary travelers. All Beth wanted to do was stay under the covers with Sherlock and sleep until dinner. The way Beth’s warm body was curled into his own was divine. Holmes, usually hating inactivity, was thinking along the same lines until he heard sniffing at the door.
“Stewart!” Beth exclaimed, not moving or opening her eyes, “Chill out. It’s just a new person, not a pox upon the house.”
The old boxer sighed and laid down, his tags clanking on the wood floor as he did. The world stilled once more for several moments. Eventually, Beth sighed and sat up, “Well, I’m awake.”
Taking Beth’s cue, Holmes got up and dressed for the day as Beth played on her phone. The sounds of a home waking up could be heard; running water, a coffee maker, the opening and closing of cabinets.
Holmes offered his hand to Beth as encouragement to start the day. She took it and groaned as she was pulled from the comfy bed.
As they passed Matt’s room, Beth used her best ‘cop knock,’, yelling, “Get up loser!”
They could hear Matt startle awake and a flood of profanities aimed at his sister. Beth giggled.
The scene in front of them in the kitchen was an utterly domestic one. Beth’s parents in their robes and pajamas, the morning news on as they started breakfast. The table was already laden with syrup, butter, jams and steaming coffee. Though Stewart sitting on a chair at said table was a bit out of place.
“Don’t ask,” Beth said. “It’s his chair.”
“Good morning!” Tresa said cheerfully in a singsong voice, “I hope you’re hungry!”
“Because it’s waffle time!” David announced excitedly as though he was a sports commentator.
“Dad makes the best waffles. I have literal dreams about them.” Beth did like her carbs.
“It’s the nutmeg,” David said proudly, grinning ear to ear.
Matt shuffled tiredly in the kitchen and plopped down. Holmes noticed how Beth and Matt both sat, their legs on the chair curled into their bodies. Beth only sat that way when she had just woken up.
Stewart visibly avoided looking at Holmes.
“Beth, Matt, will you take Stewart out please?” Tresa asked.
The twins groaned and complained, but ultimately acquiesced, taking Stewart out the backyard.
Holmes was left inside with Tresa and David. He knew what was coming, the ‘if you hurt my daughter’ speech. Holmes’s mind was divided if he should ask David first while they were on the subject, but he doubted Beth would like that.
David wasted no time and Tresa leaned in. “Now, man to man, I need to know that you have Beth’s best interests in mind. I’m in an awkward position here. I feel like I’m speaking to an elder and I’ve only read how you were characterized. I don’t know exactly what was truth and what was fiction. You have been described as cold and had an utter apathy towards the law. Gregory always complained that you were hard to work with and to be blunt, utterly misogynistic. However, from the few times I have spoken to you, you don’t seem anything of the sort. You certainly respect and care for Beth, and I haven’t seen anything troubling. Basically, I’m asking, what’s true?”
“Shall I say I have softened in my old age?” Holmes countered. He took a drink of his coffee, strong coffee only a police officer could brew. “What you have read was about a proud man. Later in my life, I was humbled by my own mistakes, namely the case of Ann Kelmot, my friendship with the Munro boy and my own defects; my deteriorating brain. I have always strived to not look at myself as the character Dr. Watson has portrayed me to be, but I will admit, that fame got to me at times. I have what a precious few have received and what many more pray for; a second chance. While morals and values fluctuate from person to person and pious will never be an accurate descriptor of my person, I do intend to do better this time around.”
David listened intently and nodded. He took a drink of his own coffee, “Well, in that case, welcome to the family, Holmes,” he said holding out his hand to the elder.
Holmes shook David’s hand. David looked to Tresa and nodded. She agreed.
A peaceful silence settled for several moments.
“Beth leave Matt alone!” Tresa chided, “a bunch of wild animals they are. Can’t say a nice thing about the other! Knock! It! Off!” She said as she tapped on the window, getting their attention.
Both men stood up from the table. Beth had tackled Matt to the ground and were wrestling over an unknown argument, Stewart running and jumping around them as though he were a part of the game he thought they were playing.
“You sure you want her?” Tresa asked Holmes, sighing.
The twins trudged in, Stewart rushing ahead of them, their heads down, ready for a lecture.
Tresa put her hands on her hips. “Well?”
“Beth said – “
“Matt said – “
They said simultaneously, pointing at each other.
Tresa held her hands up, “I don’t even want to know anymore. You’re both adults. Just keep it out of the hospital, okay?”
The twins muttered affirmatives. Matt started to walk off, but Beth feigned a lunge at him, startling him for a second, before heading to the living room.
Beth looked back and forth towards both men at the table, “Dad…why do I feel like I just walked in on something? Oh zed, you didn’t give him the ‘I’m not afraid to go back to prison and to chop you into a million tiny pieces’ talk? Do you know how many boyfriends you’ve scared away?”
“No need to fret, my dear,” Holmes said standing up and taking Beth’s hand in reassurance, “It was a simple talk between a father and his daughter’s suitor. I am no worse for the ware, though I do believe we all agree that I have passed the test, at least the preliminaries?”
David winked in response. “You should thank me for scaring away those boys, Beth, you would have never met Holmes!”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” Beth muttered as she skulked off to change.
Beth emerged in a pair of denim shorts, a tank top and a simple grey shrug with three-quarter sleeves. Around her neck, she wore the delicate gold locket Holmes had given her. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail, revealing the geometric tattoo of a sigil long thought to bring protection. Simple studs in each piercing of her ears complimented the gold necklace.
At first, it had been a bit jarring to see the modern fashions women wore, so uncovered. In Holmes’s time, their bodies were hidden and shapes altered. Now, women were encouraged to wear what they pleased. Though Holmes couldn’t deny the benefits of being able to regard Beth’s beauty without having to account for layers and layers of fabric and boning. Beth wasn’t much of a girly girl, but she endeavored to always look nice and put together.
“Hey, Sherlock, let’s take a walk around the block before it gets too hot,” Beth said after breakfast.
Holmes nodded and followed Beth outside.
Though the pavement was cracked and pitted, the neighborhood was a nice one with well-maintained homes and mature trees and gardens. There was just enough shade and a breeze to keep the walk enjoyable.
“I kinda need to tell you what went down right before you were resurrected,” Beth said once they were a few houses down.
Holmes nodded, listening.
“Obviously, I had to get my family involved ‘cause dad had the code to the lockbox that had all your papers in it. We basically had a big family meeting to discuss if this was a good idea.”
“Someone was against my reappearance,” Holmes stated.
“Kinda. It’s my Aunt Maggie. We won her over. She was very against the idea while she was your caretaker. She worried that you may not have been able to take all the stress. If you were on her watch, you wouldn’t be here. Look, the last thing I want to do is to put drama between you two, but I know she may say something, and I just wanted you to be aware of that. Just give her time, give her space. Everyone else is really excited to meet you.”
“Yes, a formerly dead man is a great party guest.” Beth wasn’t sure if he was joking until she saw the grin on his face. She matched his but knew this was a symptom of a bigger issue, it just wasn’t the right time to talk about it.
“Oh, and my cousin Luke thinks you’re Jack the Ripper.”
Holmes stopped in his tracks, “Excuse me?”
Beth laughed, “I mean, the evidence lines up…I bet the only person in the world who can get away with murder is you.” She teased.
Holmes huffed, “I know you think you’re complimenting me, but you’re really not.”
By the time the couple made it back, Tresa was scurrying around the kitchen, her arms laden with groceries and utensils, “I’m heading to Grandpa’s early to start cooking with Jett, Mag, and Kas. We don’t want Grandpa trying to cook for all of us by himself.” She explained. She gave Beth a peck on the cheek and flew out the door.
While David puttered around the garage and Matt played a loud video game, Beth and Holmes went back to their room for a nap. Travel may have advanced since Holmes’ time, but jetlag was still a thing. Beth sat an alarm for ten minutes before dinner.
~*~
They pulled into an older neighborhood and landed in a driveway littered with cars and a blossoming magnolia tree to the side, partially obscured by a fence. Beth led him into the open garage and opened the door to the home without knocking. Inside the Lestrade clan was scattered around the living room, on the sofa, loveseat, recliner and the younger generation sitting on the floor. The house was already smelling of a delicious dinner cooking. They were in the midst of conversation when they heard the door open and the room fell silent.
“My word, it’s actually him.” Grandpa Adam said.
“Hey everyone,” Beth greeted, “Holmes, let me introduce you; that’s my grandpa, Adam, next to him is my Aunt Jett and Maggie. Maggie’s daughter Kassie, her kids Brittany and Wesley. Jett’s son Luke and his daughter Lucy and son Ben.” Matt and David had arrived a little before Beth and Holmes.
“Hello,” Holmes nodded.
Holmes and Beth took an empty seat.
“How are you finding the 22nd Century, Mr. Holmes?” Adam asked, not taking his eyes off the man.
“I am adjusting well, thank you. Without all of you, I may not be here. I truly thank you all for the care you have provided. I know it was a hard and inconvenient task, one you did not volunteer for.” Holmes knew that the now American based Lestrade family would make regular trips to London to check on him before his return.
“It was my pleasure,” Adam said.
“Think nothing of it,” David said.
“Can you deduce anything about me!?” Brittany, a young girl with long brown hair asked excitedly, running up to the detective.
Holmes examined the girl for a few seconds, rubbing his chin as he took inventory. He wasn’t one to use his talents as parlor tricks, but he did want to show off a bit.
“You are an artist and a quite good one at that. Before Beth and I arrived, you were helping your great grandfather in the garden and lastly, you were given the unfortunate task of giving Spike the pug his medication.”
Brittany gawked. “How did you do that?” She asked, as though she had just seen a magic trick.
“Easy. There are paint stains on your shoes. While inexpensive paint nowadays washes off easily, allowing for a novice painter to make mistakes, the more costly products do not, due to the ingredients that give them their quality. Your parents would not buy you such costly paint if you were not any good. There is also dirt clumped on your shoes, as well as your great grandfather’s, and no one else’s. Notice the color and consistency of the dirt, red, almost clay-like that is common in these parts. You do not just pick up the clumps from walking around, but from working in the garden where the soil has been tilled and the red clay dirt exposed, from the garden I saw as Beth and I came in overhead. There is also fresh produce on the counter. As for the pug family,” Holmes said, looking past the young girl to the family of snorting pugs itching to come inside, staring at the human family through a nose smudged glass door. He returned his attention to her, plucking off several white hairs from her shirt, showing her. “You are positively covered in dog hair. From what your cousin tells me, Spike puts up a fuss when it’s time for his medication.”
The room clapped. Oh yes, Holmes was going to enjoy this night. He regaled the family in the tales of his adventures, new and old, with Gregory and with Beth. Soon dinner needed to be tended to. Most of the older Lestrade family had gathered in the kitchen, preparing dinner as the younger generation showed Holmes around. Beth sat on the counter with a can of soda.
“What’s he doing?” Kassie asked. The family soon gathered round the window, watching the famous detective.
“It looks like he’s hunting for something?”
“Did he drop something?”
“He’s probably looking for bees. He’s been wanting to diversify his colony that he keeps in Sussex, part of his original brood.” Beth answered, with the mild interest of someone who has heard enough about bees.
“He’s gonna get stung!”
“He can tell you how many times he’s been stung, in both lives.”
Aunt Jett shivered, “’ Both lives’, ooh that gives me the heebiest of jeebies. He seems so…calm. Acclimated? How did he take when he was first…revived?”
“He took it in stride. He knew what he was doing. He really misses Watson, the real one.”
“Does he talk about it…y’know death?” Matt asked.
Beth shrugged, “He says that all he remembers is going to sleep in 1947 and waking up in 2103 as though it were the next day.”
“What about the depressive episodes? Dr. Watson said he could starve himself for days!”
“He does have his issues, I’ll give you that, but he made first chair violin in the London Symphony Orchestra. He’s already gotten music to learn. That should keep him occupied enough. I’ve never seen anything alarming when cases were scarce. I think he’s figured out how to actually live with himself. If he gets freaky, well, I’ll get Matt’s pea shooter and shoot a Valium down his throat.” Beth said, mimicking a slingshot as Matt grabbed his throat and pretended to choke.
“And what about his other vices?” David asked, his large arms crossed over his chest.
“Not a thing. He barely drinks.” Beth answered, shaking her head.
“He could be hiding it,” Maggie said, stirring at the stove.
“He could, but I would have seen evidence or track marks. We’ve been having sex for quite a while. Pretty sure I would have noticed.” Beth replied casually. The family stared. “Hey, you asked. All he wants to do is play the violin, solve cases, play with his bees and occasionally box and fence. He’s doing great, I promise.”
Matt took the opportunity to change the subject, “So has he got a new batch of Irregulars?”
Beth took a drink and nodded, “Yeah, they’re pretty good kids. They’re getting close to graduating. They’re almost always over after school. Guess it helps when you have homework about the Victorian Era, and you know someone who lived through it. He’s teaching one of the kids, Daniel Wiggins, how to box actually. The resident computer whiz, Joshua Tennyson manages Holmes’ social media presence. Deidre Owens keeps him up to date on the new slang which is absolutely hilarious. It’s like a foreign language to him!”
“They aren’t homeless, are they?” Luke asked.
“Oh no, not at all. They all have decent enough families. I ran a background check on all of them long ago. Though Deidre and Wiggins aren’t above exploiting tourists for cash.”
“So,” Grandpa Adam said, “What’s it like working with him, the Master?” Pride and joy swelled in his voice.
The family listened as though they were about to hear the conclusion to a long-awaited saga.
Beth smiled, “It’s pretty great actually. Well, afterward, during the matter it’s like pulling teeth. He does what he wants which temporarily puts me in an awkward position with Greyson but who cares, Greyson can go fly a kite. He’s gotten too comfortable behind that desk, which he promptly forgets about once Sherlock closes the case.
“He comes on strong when excited about a case, asking questions and making deductions in rapid-fire,” Lestrade said, snapping her fingers in time, “He’ll rarely tell you what his plan is and you’re just caught up in his storm, along for the ride.”
By then, the kids and Holmes had settled in the living room and were giving Holmes a crash course on all the incarnations of his persona. They were hanging on to every word.
“In this one, they made Watson a girl and you have a lot of tattoos!” Lucy said.
“Tattoos? Me? Heavens!”
“You’re a mouse in this one!” Ben said, showing Holmes the character on his tablet.
“And a dog in this one!” Brittany said.
“Where’s Watson now? The robot, I mean?” Wesley asked.
“Probably playing mother hen to the Irregulars, watching too many soap operas and American baseball with Wiggins,” Holmes answered.
“Did you really shoot words into the walls of Baker Street, Mr. Holmes?” Ben asked, his eyes wide.
“Unfortunately, I did. I never got the deposit back from Mrs. Hudson either. I wouldn’t suggest it.”
The kids laughed, awestruck at the man.
“Do you really go in disguise, Mr. Holmes?” Lucy asked.
“I do! My closet is comprised mostly of costumes and disguises rather than my everyday clothes.”
“I bet you’re a really good actor, Mr. Holmes. Can you do an American accent?”
The question and answer session turned into the kids asking Holmes to do various accents and nailing them.
“I’m surprised at how well he’s taken to them,” Kassie said.
“Well, they are flattering him. He’s peacocking if anything.” Beth replied.
“So, he’s normal now?” Luke asked, continuing the conversation from earlier.
Beth snorted, “Normal isn’t even a setting on the washer at Baker Street. He still argues with the Yard and he’s still arrogant as can be. He still gets up close and personal with the crime scenes. He’s still Holmes, but maybe a better version of him.”
By then, the kids had lost interest in Holmes and had wandered off or to play with the dogs. Holmes found a large assortment of family photos on a shelf.
“That’s my mom,” Maggie said, noticing Holmes was looking at a certain picture.
“She’s beautiful,” Holmes remarked. Beth had that same bright grin as the woman in the photo.
“She was something else. She could drink coffee, crochet and watch tv at the same time. Those fish on the wall? Dad didn’t catch them, she did.”
There was a pause.
“Mr. Holmes, there are things you may not be aware of in this family, some past trauma if you will. My mom died of Alzheimer’s right before your return. It was an ugly battle, unfortunately, Beth and Matt saw a lot of it. I don’t want to see a repeat performance.” She said, looking squarely at the detective, almost accusatory.
“And you have my word that neither do I. Sir Hargreaves has ran my genome backward and forwards. He has seen no mutations in any of the genes pertaining to my memory. While he cannot prove that I will succumb to senility once more, he can neither do the opposite. I must remind you, as bizarre as the sentence sounds on my lips, that I died of old age. Far before any more distressing symptoms or more dramatic memory loss could occur.”
“Sir, I saw you dead. I saw your corpse. You scare me, a little bit. I vouched for your return, but it’s different seeing you, standing there. I don’t mean to put pressure on you, but you don’t know how much you mean to this family. We grew up hearing your stories. Do you know the impact you made on the world? Modern forensic science would literally not exist without you. When Beth was in the Yard’s academy, there was a mandatory class on your deduction techniques. Dad, David and I certainly used what we learned from you when we wore our badges. There are countless other ways you were remembered.”
“Yes, there is quite an ugly statue of my likeness far too close to Baker Street.” Holmes knew there was no logic behind this meeting. It was merely an aunt, traumatized by the prolonged death of her mother, trying to shroud her niece from another round. There was nothing either of them could do but Holmes knew that she had to get it off her chest.
“Just please, Mr. Holmes, take care of yourself, for Beth?”
“It is my every intention,” Holmes loved Beth dearly, more than he thought he could love a woman, anyone. At times, he felt in his past he was a robot, cold and analytical but now, he was alive, human. He wanted to do right by Beth and even the Irregulars.
“Dinner’s ready!” Adam called from the kitchen, a welcome reprieve for both Maggie and Holmes.
The meal was set out on the dining room table and everyone took a seat.
Adam carefully stood up, his aged knees slightly shaking as he did so. He raised his glass in the air, “I would like to raise a toast to our guest, Mr. Sherlock Holmes. It is truly an honor having you at this table. Your visage is a sight I thought I’d never see in my lifetime. You, alive and well, is the culmination of generations of hard work for this family. We also must raise a toast to Beth, for it was her tenacity to finally go through with it. We were so very proud of her before our guest was resurrected, and we are just as proud that she continues to work with you. You may be adding our Beth to the Holmes family, but we can assure you, you are a part of the Lestrade family as well.”
“And good luck with Beth, you’ll need it,” Matt said behind his glass.
The table laughed as Beth slugged him in his arm, teasingly.
“Kids…” Tresa warned.
“Sorry mom,” The twins muttered, the smirks on their faces saying it wasn’t over.
“And Beth, let’s keep Holmes from heights, whaddaya say?” David teased after the toast.
“Can I just point out that one of his latest batch of Irregulars speaks only in Binary and only Holmes can understand him without looking at his readout?”
“I merely recognized the pattern over time,” Holmes replied, simply.
The dinner was a jovial and warm one. Holmes had been welcomed into the Lestrade clan. Family stories were told, old cases were discussed, and laughter was all around.
After dinner, the couple slipped out the back door.
“As you can see, Grandpa Adam and Grandma Hannah had a bit of a green thumb,” Beth said. Along the edge of the fence and property line that dipped off into a shallow creek were several tall pear trees that provided a shaded path. There was a blossoming dogwood tree in the corner and off to the side of the house was a produce garden.
Holmes and Lestrade walked hand in hand under the grove of pear trees. A mighty oak, stories tall dominated the back corner of the backyard, a rope swing swaying in the breeze hung from a low, sturdy branch.
Beth sat down on the old piece of wood that made up the seat, “Grandpa made this for me and Matt when we were little. I spent a lot of time out here. Push me.” She said as she kicked off.
He pushed her for several minutes before he could wait no longer. Holmes caught the ropes as it came back towards him and steadied Lestrade. He moved to face her.
“Know that I do not take this proposal lightly. I may have caught up with times in some ways, but in others, I have not. I do not care for this so-called serial monogamy for myself. Forgive me if I do not have a flowery speech made up, but I never thought I’d meet a woman like you, who has enraptured me since day one. Will you marry me?”
Sherlock Holmes for the first time, dropped to one knee for a woman, not caring about the dirt below him. From his pocket, he pulled out a velvet ring box and opened it, revealing a Marquise cut diamond on a gold band, flanked by a dainty round diamond on each side.
Tears of joy welled in the Inspector's eyes, “Do you need to deduce my answer?” She said, pulling Holmes in for a kiss.

Our Skeleton 27
Just finished chapter 27 of Our Skeleton! You can find it under the cut below, or on Ao3 here:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/7563223/chapters/46057162
Toriel was calmly sitting in the living room with a knitting project on her lap when her cell-phone began vibrating. She fixed the knitting in such a way that it wouldn’t unravel on her, set it aside, and pulled her phone out of her pocket to answer it. She’d only just gotten it, so it took her awhile to remember how to answer it. By the time she did, the call had ended. Without hesitating Toriel called the number back. It rang for a moment, then was answered.
“Yeah? Who’s this?” Undyne’s gruff voice carried through the speaker.
“It is Toriel. I believe you have just tried to call me?”
“Oh. Yeah. Thanks for calling back. I forgot to tell you guys at the picnic the other day, but I found out the names of Pap’s parents. They’re probably Sans’, too. Do you want to hear?”
Toriel’s eyes sparkled. Finally! “Yes, Undyne. I wish nothing more than to learn their names.”
“Got it. Let me find that piece of paper...Oh! Here it is! Let’s see. Their names are Coursiva and T.N. Roman Revenant. Do those names ring a bell?”
Toriel was stunned. Revenant? She knew that name. Where did she know that name from? It felt vaguely familiar, as if it had been a long time since she had heard it. A very long time...Oh! She remembered.
-----
A grand ball was one of young Toriel’s favorite places to be. She loved the fancy clothes, the dancing, the people, the food - everything about a ball was exciting. This one was especially exciting because she got to wear her new dress. It was a flared ball gown in powder blue with a ruffled train and puffed sleeves. She loved it.
The other exciting thing about this ball was the number of monsters. Usually, when Toriel’s parents took her to attend a ball, it was being hosted by the human royalty they were stationed with. This time was different. This ball was a celebration of a peace treaty between one of the magic-hating human countries and the kingdom they were being ambassadors to. So there was another family of monsters Toriel could get to play with.
A human female in a stunning red dress swept aside and Toriel was finally able to see the other monsters. They were skeletons; three of them. The tallest of the three was a female skeleton. She had a beautiful yellow headdress that looked like a cross between a hijab and a beaded, braided head full of hair. There were hundreds of little beads cascading off the golden fabric. Orange, red, white - it was a tapestry of color and texture. Below the headdress was an orange mermaid dress with long sleeves and yellow ruffles.
The next tallest monster was an adult male skeleton. He was wearing a lovely caftan in browns and golds. It reminded Toriel of the jasper cat’s eye she had been given for her 200th birthday. She still had the stone in her jewelry box.
The final skeleton was a bit smaller. He looked to be the age of a child, maybe the equivalent of 13 or 14 human years old. His outfit was very similar to his father’s, only his was done up in greens and greys. Toriel thought it was an odd color combination. It looked more like a mossy rock than an outfit for celebrating in.
Toriel swept over to the trio. It wasn’t quite the full, elegant sweeping her mother could pull off, but it was still impressive. People made a path for her to move in. Before long she was there.
“Hello! I am Toriel Agouti, daughter of the ambassadors to Faiburr kingdom. Am I correct in assuming you are the ambassadors to Hefferse? It is a pleasure to meet you.”
The skeletons looked at her outstretched hand uncomfortably. Then the mother spoke.
“We are the Revenants. My name is Arial. My husband’s name is Merriweather, and my son’s name is T.N. Roman. I am sorry for our seeming lack of manners, but to shake hands was considered very rude in our last posting, and the habit sticks.”
Toriel quickly dropped her hand and curtseyed. “I am sorry, I had no intention to insult you. It is very rare for us to have other monsters to talk to. So few have the time to come to the capitol for a social visit. Please join me for refreshments. We have spider cider, rainbow pastries, symphony bonbons, and starlight cheesecakes.”
Once again the family of skeletons looked ill-at-ease. T.N. Roman was looking to his parents as if he were lost. Arial’s skull was painted with disgust, but it was Merriweather who spoke.
“Magic use is...not encouraged in Hefferse. A lot of the humans are afraid of it, and monsters have been arrested for using it. Most of the elite are more open-minded, but please don’t offer us magic food again. We have become used to hiding all magic. An influx of energy would throw us off balance.”
Toriel swallowed and curtseyed again. “I am truly sorry for any insult I might have caused. There are non-magical aperitifs as well. Let me show them to you.”
------
Toriel blinked as the memory left her, then smiled. So, that explained that little oddity. Learning to hide your magic at such a young age was a habit that would be hard to shake. It was not all that surprising that it might be passed down to the next generation, even if the reason it had been learned was no longer accurate.
“Um, hello? Toriel? Did you hear me?”
Toriel cleared her throat. “Yes, Undyne, I did hear you. I was simply remembering something from a long time ago. I do indeed remember the Revenant family. They were ambassadors to a neighboring country at the same time as my parents. I met them once. They were very stiff and inflexible, but there is something I remembered which explains one of the more confusing qualities of Papyrus and Sans.”
Undyne said gruffly, “Yeah? What is it?”
“You are aware of how the two of them hide their magic, are you not?” Toriel asked.
“Yeah. It’s so fricking weird how Pap will just go blank right after a spell. I can’t read him at all, and Sans is even worse.”
Toriel grinned. “Well, the country that the Revenants were stationed in hated magic. Having it out in the open was dangerous. The whole family had to learn to hide their magic. T.N. Roman was younger than me...maybe the equivalent of a twelve year old?”
Undyne said roughly, “You think he would have passed that on to his kids? It sort of makes sense. Kids don’t always get the circumstances that make something necessary. I can see him keeping up that habit. And it would explain why the bone brothers act the way they do...yeah. Do you mind if I share this with Alphys? She’s right here.”
Toriel blinked. “Of course you can tell your partner. I will be telling Asgore...and perhaps eventually Sans. I want to learn more about his childhood first. I do not want to have any surprises. You can stop yourself from telling Papyrus, can you not?”
“Yeah, I can do that. The way they act...his parents had to have hurt him. Emotionally, physically, I don’t care. I don’t want to see him get shredded into little smiling pieces.”
“Of course,” Toriel smiled. “And I look forward to seeing you at Papyrus’ birthday party.”
“Yeah!” Undyne cheered, “It’s gonna be at the big game sanctuary. They’ve got lions and tigers and bears-”
“Oh my!” Toriel couldn’t resist saying it. It had been set up so nicely, she just had to!
“Ugh, fine. I guess I have to let you have that one. Just...try not to ruin Papyrus’ birthday party with your jokes? Too many of them really get on his nerves.”
“I will,” Toriel promised. “I look forward to seeing you then!”
“Bye,” Undyne said shortly before she hung up. Toriel stared at the phone in shock for a minute. Then she sighed and returned it to her inventory.
Now on to serious matters...what was she going to get Papyrus for his birthday?

Macaroons
Whoo! Two prompts with one stone! Thanks for reading! ;P
Marionette and Borrower Reader
Warning: nosebleed, because they hurt themselves
______________________________________________
Marionettes parents had to run out on an emergency shopping trip to buy more sugar, and cream cheese. There was no way they could make a cheesecake without cream cheese!
Marionette stayed behind to take out the baking macaroons, but she didn't mind. Tikki, smelling the pasteries came out, and hovered near the oven.
"They smell delicious!"
"I know! Maybe later we can make some." Marionette sighed. "These are for the bakery."
Tikki nodded, and flew up to Marionettes shoulder. Both the kwami and the girl were unaware of the hungry eyes watching them.
Soon the timer beeped, and she took them out. "Oh! I'm should go get the cute cookie wrappers. I think they're up front..."
Marionette left to go fetch them.
***
"Just one.... surely they wouldn't miss one?"
You were aware of the strange little bug thing that followed the bakers daughter. You were also aware of her secret identity, but none of that mattered. All that mattered was that your stomach was demanding one of those pastries.
There were jars of cookies, and trays of cakes and pies, but the jars were hard to open, and disturbed frosting on a cake would definitely be noticed; same with the pies if the crust was broken.
Marionette at last took out the delicate macaroons, and set the tray on the counter to cool. Your mouth watered. Swiftly, and quietly you climbed down your rope in the semi dark corner, and dropped to the floor.
You waited till Marionette left, and darted out.
It seemed to be just a hop, skip, and jump till you reached the counter. Keeping an eye on the human you climbed up the wooden counter, using the nicks and grooves to get a hold.
As you reached the top, the smell only seemed to call to you more, and more. With a push, you clambered over the edge and ran across the warm pan. Stooping over you picked up the bright pink macaroon, but right before you could bit into it you heard a gasp.
Startled you dropped the cookie, and turned your head to see marionette had returned.
Your mind went into flight mode. In mere moments though, a blurry glass surronded you, you smacked face first into the wall.
Bouncing back, you grabbed your bleeding nose, and looked up to see her face an inch away from the glass! You squeaked, and pressed back, moving the glass slightly.
It was quiet for a moment before her voice broke the silence.
"Ah! I'm so sorry, I just wanted to catch you.—I mean! I just wanted you to stay for a moment so I could talk to you." She rambled.
You blinked. The blood was leaking out your fingers.
"Um....I'm gonna move the glass ok?" Her hands came over and lifted the glass slowly. You must have hit a blood vessel, because your hands were bright red, and there was no sign of stopping.
"Oh no! I'm so sorry, here!" She handed you a pink napkin. Marionettes movements we're quick, you couldn't help flinching back.
Her face was sincerely apologetic, so you took the napkin.
She watched for several slow minutes as you staunched the flow. You weren't sure what would happen when it stopped. Would she keep you? Like she kept the little bug thing?
At last you couldn't pretend like you were still hurt. You moved the paper towel away.
"....I really am sorry I hurt you." She bit her lip. "Would you like a croissant? Or maybe a cookie?" She unscrewed the lid to one of the cookie jars, and took out a cookie. Holding it out to you she smiled hopefully.
You fidgeted. "Um... th-thanks." Hesitently you reached out, and took it.
"Your welcome!" She smiled brightly. "My names Marionette, what's yours?"
Before you could answer, there was a bell chime sounded by the door. Marionette gasped. "My parents!" She whispered. In a flash her hands came out and scooped you up. You yelped in surprise as she ran upstairs to her room, calling to her parents where she was going.
Using one hand she opened the floor door and walked over to the desk to set you down.
"I'm so sorry." She apologized once more. "Its just, my parents, and I didn't know if you were to be seen by them— you didn't seem to want to be seen by me, and—"
"Er, um Marionette?" She stopped talking and looked down at you.
"....thanks. For the cookie, and for not letting your parents see me....And I'm sorry I tried to take your pasteries." You fidgeted hoping she wouldn't be upset about that last part.
She grinned. "Ah that's ok! Everyone loves our treats so I really can't blame you." You smiled back relevied.
"Heh yeah." Sitting down you bit into your cookie. "Where's your little red bug?" You asked.
Marionette jerked back as if she had been smacked. "My...my wh-what?"
"Um.... Never mind. I'm thinking of something else...." You excused. Standing back up you changed the subject. "My name is (Y/N)." You said offering your hand.
Marionette sighed relieved, and giggled as she took your miniscule hand between her finger tips. "It's nice to meet you."

The After Party

ㅤㅤ 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐫𝐤, 𝐔𝐒𝐀. ㅤ 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏
It's been a while since she landed her feet on this land, where democracy seems to be questioned a lot these days. Except for work or her last holiday here years ago, she never planned to visit this country again.
But now, with the fact that she's married to a Korean-American man, she would be visiting this country more than she could ever imagine before. Just like what happen right now. She, standing next to her husband, attending an after-party of a well-known awarding event for actors and actresses across the globe. Famous names and well-known people working in this field walking past her. Literally everywhere. She couldn't helped but to look at each of them in awe.
Sure, it may not be the first time for her to meet important and famous people like this. Being born as one of the Singapore's most influential family's daughter, being in the middle of actors is kinda like her lifestyle already. But for sure, this one felt different.
She sat on the chair next to her husband while sipping on a glass of champagne. Her eyes fixated at the actors she loves the most, ignoring her husband who's clearly jealous. This won't be her once in a lifetime experience. She'll be here every year to accompany her husband but this is her first time. First timer always looks like a small person in a big world, right?
──────────
Chiara Lee, one of the legal heirs of The Lee Holdings was there, attending the after-party of some sort of awarding event. Truth, Chiara never actually liked crowded place. Another truth, she had always been faking all those smiles, hiding her tired face underneath.
The fact that she didn’t fancy these kind of stuffs contradicted to the industry that she had been dwelling in. All those medias would always demand her to flash a wide and genuine sweet smile of her visage. Chiara was still trying to get used to it, however.
All those familiar and famous faces were crowding the room, filling it up with laughter or casual greetings. A little conversation about their movies and works were easily heeded. Chiara came from a small country, indeed, but her name was big enough for this event.
One handshake to another, countless smiles, and small laughters, Chiara knew what to do. As much as she loved her job, this was something she disliked the most. Probably, she knew most of them were also doing what she was doing; faking things and showing a facade.
She was wearing the casual black dress, her favorite, with not-so-heavy make up looks. Chiara exchanged smiles and glances with the other actors and actresses who came to attend this event. It had only been fifteen or twenty five minutes, approximately, since she stepped inside this building.
The only thing she had in mind was her hoping that the time would pass quickly so she could go back to her place, taking her time for a long warm shower. Chiara sat on her chair and fixed her hair. Her eyes were secretly taking glances at her surroundings.
‘Only for a few hours ahead, Chiara, a few hours.’
She thought to herself. She took her time to recognize all those people who were sitting near, hoping nothing would go wrong for tonight.
──────────
"Fre, instead of looking at him, will you talk to me?"
"Or maybe approach him and get it over?"
Alverstoke whispered, being a jealous husband as always. No man wouldn't be jealous to see his wife looking at another man, fixated for almost thirty minutes. He took her hands and hold it tight, causing the lass to turned her head towards him and smiled widely. "Too shy, Al. I'm nobody but an actor's wife. No one cares about an art conservator roaming in this event," she replied while she look at him.
The awarding event may have ended already but the festivities of the winners and the guests never ends. As time passed by, it only grew bigger. The chats and laughs between them could be heard clearly, filling the hall.
During their debate regarding if Frederica should've just approach the actor she likes the most, an actress sat on the same table as them. They immediately stop debating like two silly kids and smiled at her. "Hello!" she greeted her elegantly.
Alverstoke could also seen smiling at her, following her wife who looks more comfortable and socialable in this situation rather than him, despite the event actually invited him as the guest, not Frederica.
The couple doesn't want to look like silly kids fighting and debating for stupid things so they went back to their normal situation. Just like an elegant and graceful people who matched with each other really well.
"What's your name?" she asked her politely, trying to build a conversation between them two while her husband sat next to her and watched their interaction. He has zero idea on what to do in this situation, especially when he's still super jealous.
Annoyed by the gaze his wife gave to the actor who sat on the next table before.
──────────
It had been such a rough and long day for Chiara and yet she needed to do what she gotta do. This event would eventually (and hopefully) expose her to many more golden chances of her career. Chiara did not want to miss the rare opportunity, absolutely.
She didn’t come to this very country to complain, anyway. She really tried to give the best and get through the night with a smile on her visage. It was rather pleasing, truth be told, to witness the real life figure of those amazing actors that she’d been admiring.
Although she wished, literally, to not bump into particular someone that people had been gossiping about. She didn’t agree to come for an embarrassment. Her eyes stopped the moment one fine woman greeted her with such a warm smile curling up on her beautiful face.
“Hello!”
Well, it wouldn’t be so rude to not know about everyone there, would it? Because Chiara had no clue about who she was. Her eyes were reacting quickly as it immediately caught the sight of a notable actor, Alverstoke. Of course, everyone would have known him.
Chiara smiled to the woman who had just asked for her name after her warm greeting. Now that she had seen the actor, her mind played a faint memory of a news that once she heard through the media and she assumed that the woman was his fiancée.
“Hi!”
She felt rather more comfortable with the presence of someone whom she thought wasn’t an actress or actor.
“I’m Chiara Lee.”
She said, and paused for a brief seconds. Chiara was hesitating whether or not she should be asking the same question.
(Would it be rude?)
She decided to flash a smile before finally asking for her name in return. She needed to know how she was supposed to call her, anyway.
“You may call me Chiara.”
“And, this might be very rude of me, but, how am I supposed to address you?”
──────────
"Hi, Chiara!" she smiled widely. Excited to meet another person that ended up sitting with her and Alverstoke on the same table. She felt a little bit bored with the fact that she couldn't speak to everyone here, as they have their own circle.
It would be funny too if she approached them first when she's nothing but Alverstoke's fiancee. People would talk about her behind the back, no?
"Please, just call me Fre. Fre or Frederica. That's how people call me," she replied. Her head turned at Alverstoke.
"And he's my partner.."
"Alverstoke. I'm Alverstoke. Nice to see you here, Chiara. Have you walk around and taste those delicious foods?" he interrupt, cutting his fiancee's sentence to introduce himself.
Frederica chuckled before turning her attention back to Chiara. "Yeah, you should try some of the snacks and foods served here! It tastes so good. I like the oreo cheesecake!" she said. "Anyway, I'm not an actor or actress. Just a... normal person. I hope it doesn't bother you. With the fact that I'm actually no one in this big event," she told her. Being cautious as some people here would think that she shouldn't be here due to her status from the non-entertainment industry.
Alverstoke looked at her. "Don't say things like that," he gently told her. "I hope you don't mind having my partner here. She accompanies me," Alverstoke said to Chiara.
──────────
The lady whom she had in mind as Alverstoke’s fiancée was really nice. She radiated this warm and loving vibe that Chiara might needed the most that night. After the awarding event, surrounded by many famous actors and actresses, that was exactly what she needed.
Chiara felt rather lighter as she greeted her and they happened to exchange names. The atmosphere was getting way better this way. Humans are indeed made to socialize, she thought, doing things alone could be hard at times. “You got a beautiful name right there.”
“Pleasure to meet you,”
Chiara made sure that smile didn’t wash off even for a brief second, she wanted to give her as much as the warmth that she radiated.
“Although I’m sure that everyone here knows your partner, it’s an honor to finally meet you in person.”
“And apparently, I came straight to here so I haven’t tried to taste them but they sure look delicious.” Chiara emitted a light giggle as she maintained eye contact with both Frederica and Alverstoke.
“I will try to take one later, if they happen to spare some.”
Chiara was happy, although maybe it wasn’t entirely and exactly what she felt, she was grateful that she happened to be sitting next to them. She listened closely to what the beautiful lady had to say and another smile curled up on her face upon hearing that.
“Oh, please,” Chiara adjusted her position so she could bring her attention slightly more to Frederica before she continued her words.
“Trust me, it doesn’t matter at all.”
“If anything, I am more than happy to meet someone outside this circle of famous stars.”
“At this rate, I am the one who should be thanking you both for being here.”
Of course, she wouldn’t mind having her right there. Who was she to complain? She was in fact happy with it. Besides, she was also nobody compared to the famous Alverstoke.
──────────
“𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘨𝘰𝘵 𝘢 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳.”
Her cheeks blushed when she heard the sweet and kind words the lass in front of her said regarding her name. "Thank you. Thank you so much. Oh no, now I'm blushing," she replied while laughing.
The thirty-nine years old decided to took her glass and have a sip of her champagne. Just a little bit, because she, herself, wasn't a big fan of the alcoholic drinks. She just need something to kick herself and stayed calm in this event.
He leaned towards her and whispered at her ear.
"I think I've heard her name somewhere. But I'm not quite sure," whispered Alverstoke. Frederica turned her head at him and smiled. She kissed his cheek and put back the champagne glass back on the table.
"Why would you thank us for being here? We're just attending this mega-scale event and lost between those famous actors we probably knew a little," she replied while laughing formally. "I don't even know the name of more than half of the guests here. They seems to be pretty much a stranger for me... and I think Alverstoke too," she told her.
The man next to her nodded, agreeing on what his wife has told the actress. "Yep, I know only some people here. Don't even know the rest whom roams around the room," he laughed.
"Anyway, aren't you with Harald Dean Johnston?" Alverstoke asked.
──────────
“Because perhaps you have already know about this, the pressure of being surrounded by famous actors and actresses is real.” Chiara laughed. She was telling them truth. “True. I might know their names but I don’t think I stand a chance to know them personally.”
Years ago, she couldn’t even imagine herself of being invited to the award. Now that she was sitting in the after-party of that particular award, she felt surreal. She was grateful, absolutely. Yet it took a lot of energy to maintain an image as an actress.
People were busy with their own time; drinking, making a lot of brief conversations with one another, and Chiara was glad that she chose to sit there and met the couple.
“It would be fun to have a conversation with them, but I don’t think it’s very easy now.”
“They are busy and the place is practically too loud.”
If it wasn’t because of the table where they were sitting together in, Chiara wouldn’t be able to engage herself in a conversation with them.
She listened closely to the couple and now it was Alverstoke.
He responded to Frederica’s words and Chiara was rather surprised to hear the question he asked to her.
Harald Dean Johnston, the name of the famous star who was recently rumored to be having a special relationship with Chiara. She laughed nervously.
It was true that they were close, but it didn’t necessarily mean that they were having some sort of special—romantic relationship.
“Harald Dean Johnston?”
“He is a good senior but I couldn’t possibly think of going with him.”
──────────
“𝘉𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘴 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭.”
She couldn't help but to nod her head, agreeing in what she said regarding that matter. "We never intended to announce pur relationship at all until the wedding day at first," she replied.
"But the media caught us faster than we thought. now, the whole world knew and it sucks. For me and my family.
I always thought that living a life as an actor and actress, a celebrity, must've been great. You can travel, play, make friends with famous and influential people," Frederica then shook her head. "Turns out, now, as I living with an actor and unwillingly became a part of it, I understand that it actually harder for people like you, like my husband, everyone."
"Constantly seen and hunted down by media all the time. Articles written without your permission for stupid things and irresponsible rumors."
She turned her head around, initiating that she's actually talking about them. The guests in the room right now, chatting and laughing at each other. Clinging sounds of the glasses. "People here showed their true colors behind and act like a saint in front of the media."
She looked at her again and smiled, while her husband was still sitting beside her, listening to every words she and Chiara said. But right when he mentioned about the name of an actor he probably meant to say at Fre when he whispered, the atmosphere went different.
Quickly, she realized that something is not okay and her husband supposed not to say that. She stepped on his left foot under the table to stopped him from saying more. As she looked at Chiara's expression, she quickly understood.
In panic, she quickly tried to correct what her husband said before and asked her. "I'm sorry. My husband must be drunk right now. He drank too much wine earlier," she said nervously. Right, she mentioned him as her 'husband' not fiancée like before.
She didn't realize that her tongue slipped. Nervously trying to fix the atmosphere that just went down the hill after the name was mentioned.
“Hubby, I think you need to breathe in some fresh air. Go outside and talk with someone," she said at him, trying to shoo her husband away for a while. Alverstoke nodded, realizing that he just made a mistake.
"I'm sorry. Deeply sorry. Please forgive me," the actor said while bowing his body ninety degree before he pat her shoulder and left the table.
"You know... my husband kinda mixed up the news he read. I'm sorry."
──────────
Chiara smiled as Frederica stated her words, sympathized on what she felt about dwelling in a life where one important thing called privacy doesn’t exist. Her mind was playing her own memories as Frederica spoke about it, Chiara understood. She could relate to it.
Pretty much everything she went through as an actress. Let alone having herself born into a famous and respected household with his father bearing a image and a name of the whole family.
“It gets tiring at times, things could be unpleasing, too.”
“But I’m sure that if it passion that makes us go on, then I think we will eventually learn how to cope up with things.” She took a sip of her drink before she continued.
“I believe that your partner will always try his best to put you away from all those things.”
It was really, really nice to be able to talk with someone regarding that matter without having to receive any fake response like others might do give her. Her explanation and statements were all true and very well relatable. Although that, things didn’t last long.
The moment Alverstoke mentioned Harald name, it was rather ironic for her to think about how they had just actually talked regarding that matter and now the topic quickly changed into some sort of rumor involving Chiara and an actor. She took another sip of her drink.
Her throat felt rather dry that it was hurtful to swallow anything. She mentally cursed anyone who dared on spreading that kind of rumor. No matter what happened between Harald and her was meant to be their privacy. Indeed, her life was designed to go on that way.
It would have been easier if someone outside the field were to say that but in fact, it was Alverstoke, someone who probably knew Harald better than she did. Every single time things happened this way, Chiara only had two options of chances in mind.
Either it would be way way way easier or not at all. She had no idea what would happen when it was Alverstoke who said about it. Frederica seemed to notice what was going on and quickly trying to cool things down. Chiara smiled while hesitating on what to say.
First was because she clearly heard that she called and was referring Alverstoke as ‘husband’ rather than ‘fiancé’. Second was simply because she didn’t know what to do. “It’s okay,” after contemplating for several minutes, she said something.
“The news spread fast, not surprising at all. Harald’s reputation is also unquestionably great, so,” she pulled another smile as she put a few strands of her hair to the back of her ear.
“Your...mmm, partner, sure does know about it.”
──────────
"I guess he's too drunk to realize that he's supposed not to say that." "I'm sorry, really. Alverstoke isn't really close to Harald these days. He surely has a specific sentiment towards him. Jealousy. I think, that's why he didn't know what's actually happening."
Frederica added as she turned her head to look at the man she married weeks ago secretly. He walked out the room into the terrace alone, trying to escape the situation first. Instead of only Chiara who became nervous upon that name being mentioned, Frederica herself froze in her position.
For a second, she felt like she was lost in her thoughts as memories regarding that man in the past creeped into her mind. Harald, she knew who's that man. The man who once proposed to her, far before she met Alverstoke last year.
Frederica never dated anyone but Alverstoke and she never fell in love with someone else but Al. She's single for almost her thirty-nine years until her husband came. So when Alverstoke heard about what happened in the past between she and Harald, the man is always full with jealousy.
Al and Harald were close once, but now they've separated after he proclaimed his one-sided love to the public during an interview. At that time, Harald knew that the woman Alverstoke was in love with is none other than Frederica Liem.
She knew that the jealousy was the cause of why Alverstoke mentioned the name earlier in front of Chiara, the 'supposed-to-be' Harald's lover, according to the news. He never did things like that and it was unlikely for him, but again, the jealousy took over his head.
Of course, as a wife, she would scold him after the event at home and maybe a fight will break out from the topic. She always asked Alverstoke to stop discussing anything about the man.
"I'll scold my husband after this. I can't let this slide away as his wife. I apologize on behalf of Alverstoke, Chiara. It's just the past that makes him like that.. I know it can't be justified." She felt uncomfortable with what Alverstoke has done and the situation betweeen she and Chiara.
──────────
Words like 'husband' and 'wife' were blurted out without her realizing. She's always been like that. Feeling more sensitive and apologetic during situations like this, then act and talk spontaneously. She sipped on her champagne and smiled slightly.
There was awkwardness in between them. The ambience that was once so lovely and warm now changed into something that Chiara had never thought of facing. It was no one’s fault, of course. Something like this was meant to happen, anyway. Chiara knew that much.
She and the man named Harald Dean Johnston were close, in fact, they had some sort of special relationship but Chiara was always Chiara. She couldn’t possibly think of dating anyone for now. As much as Harald was so close to everything she ever wanted in a man.
To actually date a famous actor would be too much for her. The rumor alone was quite a hassle for the company to take care of. She was glad that the rumor did not bring much of a negative impact to her career.
Chiara emitted an awkward giggle as Frederica apologize.
“It’s okay, don’t think too much about it.” Harald surely had mentioned something about Alverstoke. She might have known a little about what happened in between the two actors but it was none of her concern to deal with. Chiara was slowly getting a hold of herself.
Chiara was rather more concerned with the fact that now Frederica was the one to get nervous. She looked uneasy or guilty for the way Alverstoke mentioned something about Chiara’s relationship that way. She stretched out both of her arms to grab Frederica’s hand.
“No need to, I very much understand.”
A genuine smile curled up heavenward on her visage as she responded to Frederica’s words. It was like a hunch that she thought the woman might feel cautious due to what had just happened, from the tone and the way she spoke.
Chiara didn’t know that they were married. Perhaps no one knew about it, too. She was thinking that maybe the couple did marry in secret because it’d be very understandable to happen so. However, Chiara did not want to be rude and kept everything to herself.
“I believe your husband did—“ she stopped immediately. She was thinking too much about it that she happened to say ‘husband’ instead of ‘partner’. She gulped down and tried to repeat her words, hoping Frederica wouldn’t notice or mind about what Chiara had just said.
“I mean, I believe your partner did not mean it that way.” “The rumor was quite hot topic amongst the actors and actress these days, too. It is really okay.”
As Chiara's hands extended and reached out hers, Frederica smiled. Feeling a little bit relieved. The lass smiled and let out a sigh from her lips. She listened to Chiara's words until that sentence caught her off.
──────────
“𝘐 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘩𝘶𝘴𝘣𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘪𝘥—“
She gulped. Her hazel brown pupils dilated as she heard that word was mentioned.
'[...] 𝗵𝘂𝘀𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱 [...]'
Now she realized that she just made a big problem. Blurting out words she shouldn't say at the actress in front of her. Hinting about her secret marriage life with Alverstoke already. Her memories played back minutes ago when she mentioned to her that she's his wife and stuffs. Out of panick.
Frederica tried to keep herself calm.
'𝘖𝘩 𝘯𝘰, 𝘑𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘴. 𝘐 𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘢 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦... 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯.'
She took a deep breathe to stay composed on her seat and looked at Chiara's eyes again. "Thank you. It means a lot for me. Thank you very much," she finally replied to her sentences.
Right when she just wanted to let out another sentence to change the topic between them, a voice was heard from the back of her body.
"Ms. Biancardi, the famous art conservator. Is that you?"
She turned her head and smiled to a man who tried to talk to her. "Yes, that's me. How can I help you?" she asked calmly with a professional smile on her face. Turning it into a business mode as her job was being mentioned.
"I'm Rio Song, an actor. I also saw your conservation of Monalisa last year," he said.
Frederica nodded her head. She turned to Chiara and smiled. "I think I should leave for a while. Perhaps when there's a spare time, we can talk again?" she asked.
──────────
Now that Frederica was looking rather in panic, Chiara didn’t really know what to say. As she knew that Frederica might be trying to hide it. However, Chiara understood, she just wanted to keep everything in secret, knowing the reputation of Alverstoke.
After all, it was just her guesses. Chiara surely couldn’t assume any much further for she knew that would be rather disrespectful. All she had in mind right now was to escape the awkwardness. She didn’t know how but she was hoping that something should happen.
(Should she just excuse herself and leave? That would be very improper to leave Frederica alone.)
The deity must have heard the prayer that he sent her someone to call Frederica’s name.
‘Sweet Lord, thank you.’ She thought to herself just as soon as she heard it.
It was another fellow actor and Chiara had no intention to interrupt. She heaved out a relieving sigh as she finally could escape the awkwardness. Although that would mean losing a friend to talk with, in this case, it was Frederica. Chiara emitted a smile.
"I think I should leave for a while. Perhaps when there's a spare time, we can talk again?" Frederica asked her as she was about to go. Chiara nodded gently as the smile was still curling up on her visage, agreeing to the idea that they might have another time.
“Sure, that would be lovely to talk with you again.”
“Thank you so much for talking to me tonight.”
Chiara said, letting go of Frederica to have a conversation with another people. Chiara bid her goodbye to the woman and took a sip of her drink for the last time.
She stood up and looked for a less crowded space to call for someone. She thought that would be enough and she was intending to leave the place as soon as possible.
“Where are you? We need to talk.”
The night didn’t end there for Chiara.
End of The After Party.

Boundless: A Criminal Minds Fan-fiction
Featuring: Emily Prentiss x Female Reader Setting: After Season 7

“Could you do a sweet little oneshot where Emily and her wife adopts a baby or babies? Thank you.🙂💕💜”
A/N: Alright you remember when Prentiss was looking at buying a townhouse and Morgan was going to help her? Well the REASON she didn’t buy the townhouse was because she ended up eloping and moving in with Y/N. Emily doesn’t go to Interpol in this AU. Happy reading! xoxo Stu
Your name: submit What is this?
It was in the quiet of the morning that the house felt emptiest. Y/N still breathing deeply while Emily would start getting ready for work. The large elegant rooms chilled with lack of motion. She walked in stocking feet down the dark wooden hallway. Thoughts of hectic mornings and little voices calling for Mama and Mommy from one of the now vacant rooms drew Emily Prentiss into daydreaming.
She had thought about adoption before, but it was the heroine in her saving a teenager on a case, not entirely thought out. Yet, here she was a year after falling in love with Y/N, dreaming up scenarios where their big house would be made full. After years of working to save people from the worst of humanity, Emily knew there were so many children who deserved better than they had. It had been two weeks since Y/N and Emily had submitted their paperwork to become foster parents, stating firmly that their intention was to adopt.
She knew the process could take up to two months for approval within their county welfare system, but she was hopeful as a federal agent, she would get special attention. She filled her travel mug with her half of the pot of coffee and headed to work.
It had taken four weeks and three days of you nesting without trying to look like it, for you to get the call. A child needed emergency placement overnight and for an indeterminate amount of time after. You were at the grocery store, so you asked about the details to be ready.
“A four year old boy after surviving an accident.” The social worker stated.
“Does he have any allergies or triggers I need to know about?” You asked, worrying about Sergio.
“No known allergies, but we can discuss trauma when I bring him over.”
“Thank you, I will be there within the hour.” You hung up and scurried over to the bargain aisle hoping to find some toys to hold him over for the night.
The brilliant little boy with the charcoal skin was in and out of your lives quickly. He had been in a car accident and the patrol on the scene had assumed that his mother was under the influence when in fact she was not. It was a happy reunion for them, but it left your arms empty.
You and Emily began to talk yourselves through the process before a new child or family of children entered your home. You couldn’t get attached until the courts were denying parental appeals. You had to be present and responsive, without becoming too attached. Emily was far better at it than you were, having to compartmentalize with the BAU for years. You were the housewife now, it was much harder to let go when the babies were with you all day everyday, besides school.
It was six months after starting the fostering to adopt process that you found them. Little Aliyah (3.5) and tough guy Camaron (6) had been left without guardians when their grandmother suddenly died of a heart attack. Their mother and fathers had not been heard from since Aliyah was born. Their angel grandmother had taken custody and sent her daughter to rehab, unfortunately she disappeared after completing the month long stay. All of this was more information than you usually received, but with a death and your status as perspective adopters you were notified.
They were so scared when you showed them their rooms, “But, lady, do we have to sleep in our own rooms? ‘Lia has nightmares and if Grammy isn’t there, she needs me.”
Your heart melted. “Aliyah? Do you want to stay in Camaron’s room for bedtime?” Her little blonde head bobbed, sucking her fingers.
“Alright, sweetie, we’ll make sure to move your bed in here. Maybe your room can be the play room then?”
Camaron smiled briefly at you.
“So, like, you’re married?” Camaron stared at you and Emily kissing hello.
“Yes, Camaron, we’re married.” Emily confirmed, meeting his wide eyed stare. “That okay?”
“If you say so, two moms are prolly better than no moms.”
“Cam, stop it, girls can marry girls now. Grammy said so.”
“I know, ‘Lia, its just I aint seen it before.”
“We’re family here, if you have questions, we will answer them so you can understand.” You added, gently.
“Do you have any? Questions? Guys?” Emily sat down at the table next to Aliyah.
“Not really, but can we eat already?” Camaron asked.
Emily was reading in bed and checking her messages on her phone.
“Tell Garcia hi from the Prentiss-Y/L/Ns” You whispered, turning off your bedside lamp.
“She says sleep tight snuggle-bugs.” Emily deadpanned.
“That she would,” You leaned in and kissed Emily deeply before burying your face in your pillow. “Don’t forget to sleep, Em.”
Emily was up for another hour when she heard a tiny voice at the door.
“Mama Em? Can I lay with you?” Aliyah was dragging the Spiderman blanket from her bed with her.
“Sure, sweetie, but there’s not much room up here with Mommy. Should we try the couch?” As Aliyah’s glassy eyes squinted into a smile, Emily dropped her work on to her bedside table.
“What do you mean she is protesting the adoption?” You were dumbfounded. The social worker was on the line, it had been 7 months since your babies had entered into your life. Their biological mother had come out of the woodwork and had thrown the proceedings into a tailspin. You looked at Emily with sheer terror. Your wife’s dark eyes understood immediately, she nodded and began dialing.
“Garcia I need everything you can dig up on Charlene Franks. We’re going to war.”
“So you mean that my first mom wants us back?” Camaron looked confused.
“Yeah, baby, she didn’t know about your Grammy until recently. Now she knows and wants to see you again.” You tried to explain without any sway in your words.
“But, Mommy? I don’t know her.” Aliyah was still very shy.
“That’s okay, Miss Jackie and I will be there along with some other grown ups.”
“Miss Jackie is nice, most of the time.” Camaron commented as he continued to build his LEGO tower.
Your blonde haired girl crawled into your lap, sucking her fingers. “I don’t want her, I just want you.”
“I know, sweetie, but she gets a chance to meet you. You’re such special kids and Camaron hasn’t seen her in a long time.”
“Is Mama coming?” Camaron asked, demolishing his tower and starting a new one.
“If she can make it. She and all of your aunts and uncles are working a case in New York right now.”
“I want Mama home,” Aliyah yawned into your neck.
“Me too, baby.”
Garcia had compiled an insane amount of evidence for your lawyers to sift through. SSA Prentiss took a very involved role in securing and reviewing any case details in order to be prepared to testify on her tech analyst’s behalf. It turns out that she was overly prepared, the judge ruled in favor of the adoption. Denying any and all claims of parental rights as Charlene had abandoned her children so long ago. Only after learning that her mother had established trust funds for the children did she attempt to re-enter their lives.
You hugged Emily the second the gavel hit the rest. Your smile was plastered on for a solid hour after leaving the courthouse. JJ and Will had the kids while you touched base with the lawyers. The adoption was set to be finalized the first of the month.
Emily straightened your collar as you double checked her mascara. The emotions running through you both required water-proof doubly applied. The kids got to pick their outfits for their big day: Camaron wore a short sleeved button down shirt with khaki shorts. Aliyah wore a polka dot skirt with a Hulk tee shirt.
Stepping into the judge’s chambers you burst into tears. Penelope was there with Spencer, Will and JJ, Rossi and Morgan and Hotch had brought Jack. Your parents and Ambassador Prentiss had even flown in. The entire BAU family had arrived to show support of the new Prentiss-Y/L/Ns. Camaron was first, taking the gavel from the judge, pounding away as he was declared yours.
Aliyah, shy as ever, clung to you, burying her face in your neck as the judge gently tapped the gavel announcing her to be yours. With each official decree the room erupted in applause and cheers. Camaron running over to Uncle Derek for a high five immediately afterwards.
Rossi had a catered dinner at his estate for the team and all the families. Emily was talking with her mother when you found her.
“‘Lia is asleep in the first floor guest room.” You explained, she nodded, smiling at you. “Thanks for coming, Mom.” You rubbed the Ambassador’s arm gently.
“Of course, Y/N, I wouldn’t miss this for the world!” She patted your hand and leaned in to kiss your cheek.
“I’m going to find the boys before we are missing the entire cheesecake tray.” You said, excusing yourself.
“We did it.” Emily whispered in your darkened bedroom. You lay your head on her chest and hummed in agreement. The children asleep in their own rooms down the hall were officially part of the family.
“Thank you for everything you did to make it happen, Em.”
“Thank you for being an amazing mother, Y/N. I am so lucky to come home to this warm home each night.”
“You’re pretty fantastic yourself.” You protested, “But thank you for saying so.” You stretched your neck up to kiss her smooth mouth.
The next morning Emily woke to Aliyah screeching that Camaron hadn’t flushed the toilet. Emily then stumbled out of bed to step on LEGOs in the hallway that someone had left as a present outside your door. You rolled over, letting her handle the newest tragedy. Emily found your two children pouring their own cereal at the kitchen table. Sergio was lapping the spilled milk on the floor. She smiled at the fullness of her house and heart.

Survey #476
“yeah, i am the brain, some say insane”
What is your favorite Pixar film? Finding Nemo. Who was the last person to send you any sort of message on social media? My sister Misty. Would you rather build a snowman or a snow fort? Why? Snowman. I think you can personalize them better. At what age do you believe children should begin having screen time? I don't know. I guess it would depend on the kid. Have you ever failed an important test? Which subject? Yes; I failed my last Algebra final and the course. Who taught you how to ride a bike? How old were you? My dad. Idr how old I was. Do you know what your ring size is? What is it? Nope. When you picture dinosaurs in your head, what color are they? Like a darkish red or green. Last candy you tried that you did not enjoy? Or one that you did enjoy? No clue. Were you a chubby or thin baby? I was your average size. What is the most outrageous thing you’ve considered doing lately? Trying to get a cubicle job. Like seriously, NOBODY wants those. I don't either, but I just don't know what other options I have that don't require a degree and I'm not flocked by other people. I'd probably have some duties on the phone, but like... I'm not going to find a job I qualify for that is perfectly reclusive. Have you ever known somebody who ran away? Not personally, no. Rollercoasters that go upside-down… yes please or no thank you? NO FUCKING THANK YOU. Can you have kids? I would assume so, but honestly I wish I physically couldn't with how intensely I fear being raped. Are you a fan of Elton John? I've never really listened to his music and know very little about him as an individual. What does your town’s name begin with? "R." Are you a seafood fan? Nooooo. The one and only seafood I enjoy is shrimp. Give me a random word in another language. Tell me what it means. "Himmel" is "Heaven" in German. Odd how that was the first one to come to me, ha ha. Which city would you like to visit- Rome, Tunis, London, Madrid or Paris? Rome. New tats in your near future? Sadly no. :/ I have to focus on more important things. Did you ever participate in beauty pageants as a child? No. I don't support those. Have you ever ridden in a limousine before? No, but I've always wanted to. :( What's the most amount of money you'd pay for a house or a vehicle? Idk, considering I'm not familiar enough with what is considered reasonable and average for either. What's the longest wait time you'll wait at a restaurant to be seated? If it was actually up to me, shit, maybe only 15 minutes. I am way too impatient, and I'd rather just go to another place than wait for a while. Have you ever been given a responsibility that you couldn't handle? Did you mean: my past three jobs? Did you ever try to start a club as a child? For what? I feel like my friends and I did before... but I remember nothing of it. Who was your favorite babysitter as a child? My sister had this friend in our neighborhood as a kid whose grandparents used to watch us. The grandpa we knew as "Uncle Donny," and he was bar none our favorite. He was such a sweet man. Have you ever cared for a stray animal before? Cats, on many occasions in the past. [TW: SUICIDE/OVERDOSE] Have you ever contacted a suicide or crisis services hotline? For whom? Yeah, for me. I tried first to reach them online in one of those private chatrooms, but I want to say I waited around 30 minutes with nobody available. I was so desperate that I tried calling too, but again, it was too busy. That's when I ODed. Is there anyone from your family that you no longer associate with? I have an uncle by marriage that's an abusive, manipulative fuck that NOBODY associates with, except his brainwashed daughters. Do you have any illnesses that reoccur frequently? I mean, I have mental illnesses that flare up now and again, but no traditional illnesses. What is your sexual orientation? Queer or pansexual, idk man. Have you ever done any drugs harder than marijuana? I've never even done weed. What is one job you would never want to have? I would, no exaggeration, rather die than be a butcher. I could never in five trillion years. Do you bite or peel your string cheese? I don't like string cheese. Who crosses your mind the most? Girt, nowadays. I know, a fucking shocker who wasn't the answer. Have you ever been on a scavenger hunt? In school, yeah. Ever been to an auction? No. Are there two colors that you just simply despise? Puke green and yellow. If you were a fish, what colour would you like to be? I wanna be the Rainbow Fish. :') Did your first real significant other change you at all? You have literally no idea. Are you waiting to have sex until you’re married? No. What’s your favorite football team? I don't like football. Or even understand it. Do you have anything autographed by a celebrity? No. What’s your favorite way to eat peanut butter? Gimme a Reese's and I'm a happy bitch. :^) What’s your favorite kind of sandwich? I'm basic, just hand me a pb&j. How are you today? Worried about my mother since she has Covid now. I'm not feeling too hot, either. Was any of your home decor inspired by Pinterest? No. What is this month’s calendar picture? I don't own a current calendar. What is your last ex-boyfriend’s or ex-girlfriend’s name? Sara Jane. I prefer to refer to her as just my best friend, though; "ex" usually implies negative feelings in some way or form, and I've none of those. Do you use Snapchat? I never have. Would you rather go out for pancakes or steak? Yum, pancakes. Are you the clubbing type? No. Clubs don't appeal to me at all. Is your ex sexually attractive to you still? I haven't seen him in literally years. I wouldn't know. What is unattractive about them? The fact he apparently can't accept a mentally ill partner. Supposedly, he broke up with the girl he dated after me for the same reason he left me: her having depression. Like bro, good fucking luck finding a girl who doesn't struggle with something. Good luck finding someone who's going to be on Cloud 9 all the time. And also, he never communicated what he was feeling. Do you have a crap load of friends to hang out with? God no. The only person I hang out with is my boyfriend. Honeymoon, where? Alaska, if it's a good time of year to see the Northern Lights. If not, maybe the Bahamas to visit their black and pink beaches. The heat and humidity put me off, though... Lipstick over the actual natural lip line, your thoughts? It's capable of being attractive if done well and it's not too extreme, unless you're only looking from a distance. It can look especially great on drag queens imo. How would your wedding bouquet look like? Depends on the time of year, really. I kind of want to say black regardless, but I think that would blend too much with my dress (which I want to be black). Maybe if it was in the fall, which I want, it'd be orange and black to fit the Halloween vibe I'd love to have as a theme, perhaps a rich red, or light pink and white... idk. That's far in the future. What kind of game would you like to play that doesn’t exist yet? Bro, give me a meerkat simulator. There's the Lead the Meerkats Wii game that I ADORE, but I think the concept could be greatly expanded upon and made more realistic. What is one thing you would never ever eat? Balut came to mind very quickly. That looks like the grossest shit imaginable. I'll never forget seeing it for the first time on GMM and wondering how neither of them literally died where they sat lmao. There are a LOT of other foods, too. I'm incredibly picky. Which character in your favorite movie do you hate the most? Every single character from The Lion King is so lovable. Which non-existing (sci-fi and such) weapon and/or vehicle would you like to own/use? Bro, I want Thori'dal from WoW. A bombin' bow with unlimited, magical arrows? That shit's dope. Could save your life, and plus I love bows. How do you think the world will end? Humanity's end will almost certainly be rooted in human action. The end of the planet itself will probably be a black hole, gamma ray, or something else supremely powerful. If you could take a pill that would cure something in you that isn’t an illness - what would you be cured of? The fact I'm fat. :^) Take it all away pls. Has anyone besides your family seen you naked? If so, who? My ex. Do you remember anyone’s number by heart? Literally nobody's. Not even my own. :x Name something you will never try in your lifetime. Hunting. What’s the best place you have ever eaten at? The Cheesecake Factory, omlllll. Are you at home right now? Yep. What’s worse: Crocs or Uggs? Crocs are so fucking ugly to me. Do you knock before you open doors? Always. Does Fred from YouTube annoy you? Now THIS is a throwback. I liked him as a kid. He'd probably annoy the shit out of me now. Anything exciting taking place today? No. Who have you texted today? My mother and Becky, the receptionist at my psychiatrist's office. I rescheduled my appointment to tomorrow with my mom being sick (she wants to talk to him, and she's in no shape to today) and me not feeling well, either. Do you like grapefruits? No. Have you ever had the Reese’s PB candy bars? Omfg, the ones that are a bar of smaller squares is my FAVORITE candy in the world. Where’s your mother? In bed. She was directed to mostly quarantine in her room away from me. Are there any pets you’re wishing for? Always. :( Do you like oatmeal raisin cookies? I HATE raisins, so guess. Is your belly button pierced? No. Do you watch PewDiePie? Not anymore, no. His content changed a long time ago and doesn't interest me anymore. Do you like "Despacito?" Omg my sister showed it to me once and I hated it. Do you have any subscribers on YouTube? uhhh *checks* I have 71. More than I expected, ha ha. What’s the first word that comes to your mind if I say: "Boop!" Booping a snake on the nose. :'3 Have you ever played Five Nights at Freddy’s? Nah. I enjoy watching YouTubers play it, and I like the franchise, it's just not my kind of game to actually play. Can you twerk? Oh god, never tried, don't want to. Do you like dabbing? It looks stupid to me. It looks like you're smelling your armpit, dude. Can money buy you happiness? You are 110% full of shit if you think it can't to some degree. I would be so, so much happier if I wasn't poor. Have you heard of Blizzard Entertainment? Well, considering they're the company that owns World of Warcraft, obviously.
