the reason why sam and dean’s unhealthy dynamic doesn’t need to be fixed is because they both (unconsciously) crave power imbalance but for completely different reasons

dean didn’t have much power when he was younger since john took his control away from him. which is why he seeks power/control via hunting, violence and his relationship with sam. dean’s repressed sadistic tendencies, his love for hunting, his enjoyment of torturing & killing souls in hell come from his repressed need to be in control

and sam, as jared said, wants to restrain his physical power. not only because he doesn’t feel comfortable in his body, being too big and intimidating on the outside but feeling smaller and craving safety on the inside. but also because of his guilt and wanting to prove to himself, and to dean, that he’s good. that dean can trust him. it makes him seek comfort in being punished, in being restrained and feeling smaller than he is, but dean is the only person who can give him what he needs because dean is also the only person sam trusts and submits to. as twisted as it may be, but dean’s control over him is the only thing that gives him a feeling of safety he’s always craved

they complement each other in this fucked up way, that’s why their dynamic cannot exist without a certain amount of power imbalance

staring off into the distance while thinking of alpha dean finding out his beta little brother is actually an omega, when sam unexpectedly goes into heat (the suppressants he'd been using almost constantly ever since he presented stopped working after reuniting with his brother and spending too much time around him).

dean wants to freak out but he gotta make sure sam's somewhere safe asap. once they get to a motel, dean asks sam if there's anything he needs before he leaves (obviously dean's struggling with this decision, leaving sam to go through a heat alone, an omega, sam is an omega, what the hell; and it's his baby brother, jesus, what other choice does he have but leave?), and sam is getting to the point of being delirious, so he blurts out "your shirt, dean. anything that smells like you".

they don't need to say another word, they both know. dean hauls ass before he can do something unbrotherly.

Sam thinks back to all the times he prayed— every time he got on his knees next to the bed, trying to be heard by the angels or by God himself. Dean was always the pragmatic one, making fun of him, and, honestly, his faith did shudder sometimes, it did, but… now? He’s finally hearing back now. From all those prayers. He was always supposed to end up here, on his knees, devoting himself to his brother. Dean was always the one he was praying for.

I've been happy to participate in the Now It's Perfect Fest for 4 years running. I'll never get enough of Sam and Dean happy in heaven fics! Thanks to @digitalmeowmix for hosting the fest again this year.

I thought I'd link to my new fic and my previous contributions so they are all in one spot. These are all short wincest fics with canon-levels of angst and happy endings.

2021: One Sweet Day: Dean would always be worth an eternity of waiting.

2022: Before Forever: If Heaven is perfect, then why does Sam feel like he’s missing the most important piece?

2023: Tears in Heaven: What if he’d gotten confused while he was dying in Sam’s arms and had accidentally told him?

2024: Time Out of Mind: Time had never been on Sam’s side.

i realize how demented this sounds but hear me out okay.

when sam first sees the "angel" in houses of the holy, dean offers him a drink from his flask—sam refuses. at the end of the episode when sam's faith has been crushed by the disappointing reality, dean offers his flask again, and sam accepts it this time.

the difference between these two scenes lies in sam's faith: in the first sequence, sam is filled with a religious fervor and a hope for his own redemption. in the second, he's crippled and lost and hopeless. there's a few interpretations of this which i think all kind of overlap and influence each other.

first and foremost, the most literal, baseline interpretation of this is probably that sam is interpreting dean's gesture (somewhat accurately) as being dismissive of his experience in the first sequence, but as compassionate in the second. there is a marked difference in how dean offers the flask to sam each time, and dean too has undergone a change throughout the episode to influence his understanding of god and faith.

but these scenes can also have interesting symbolic meaning, too. this is alcohol that dean is offering. it's a substance from which abstinence is associated with moral purity—the prohibition movement was led by protestants seeking to eliminate corruption and violence from the world, and it was framed as a battle for morality. therefore, temperance is seen as good, pure, and righteous. when sam is consumed by his faith, he abstains. when he loses his faith, he imbibes.

and through that moral lens, there's another interesting interpretation that can be found. the flask belongs to dean, and he is seen drinking from it. when sam drinks from it, too, they're literally swapping spit. metaphorically, drinking from the same flask can be seen as a kiss, and this isn't the only time this metaphor is used, either. in sex and violence, nick drinks from dean's flask, then lets dean drink from it again—and this sharing of saliva is what puts dean under his siren's spell.

in sex and violence, sharing a flask is depicted as an explicitly sexual act, a stand-in for a kiss. nick is dean's sexual fantasy, the ideal little brother, and he snags dean through an indirect kiss.

so if sharing a flask is a sexual act, then it can apply here: abstaining from alcohol is morally righteous and good, and imbibing is morally tarnished. sam, in his ecstasy, wants to be good—he thinks he's been chosen for redemption, after all. he wants to live up to the potential that the "angel" sees in him. he refuses the drink, and only when he's lost his faith does he accept it.

but it's dean's flask. accepting the drink would also be a sexual thing—he would be kissing his brother. it would be an act of incest, something impure and unholy and sinful. he wants to be good, so he rejects not just the drink but dean himself, because to engage with him would be a sin. this rejection is embedded within a plot which drives sam and dean apart, their religious philosophies at war. they drift further apart with each clash of theologies, and they both reject each other's perspectives in their loyalty to their own.

it's only after he loses his faith that he stops trying to be good, that he accepts the drink, that he takes dean back into himself. he kisses his brother when he returns to him, and it's after this reuniting kiss that they're able to come together again and find compromise and concession, their respective ideologies shifting toward each other's until they've found equilibrium again. through the flask, they literally kiss and make up, and their codependency is secured through that kiss.

they should've changed jessica's name to deanna for extra damage. deanna moore. after all, her birthday was on 24th january. are you seeing the vision? sam was gonna propose to deanna. sometimes sam would call her dee for extra crispy damage. how much psychic damage would it cause to dean do you think? i mean jessica and dean looked more related than sam and dean ever did and to be fair she looks more like a deanna than jessica. you would think if sam had a daughter instead of a son, he'd name her jessica, but actually he would name her deanna. like i've always thought bout what name would he give to his daughter. he named his son dean not john, so mary was out of option. it's likely jessica and that's the only way jessica would carry sam's last name. which he couldn't give to his jessica...sad. but there ain't no me if there ain't no you. sam without dean is like an angel without wings no matter how torn and frayed the wings are. he would name her deanna jessica winchester...still a dj

The display put on for them by heaven was rather spectacular. The bright greens and blues danced across the night sky above them and Baby. Sam looked over at Dean with love, who was fully absorbed in the magnificent display. His green eyes reflecting the undulating brighter green made him look ethereally beautiful. Northern Lights were something neither of them managed to get a chance to see, while alive. So, it was just about perfect to have this moment. He wrapped his hand around Dean's and turned his gaze upward again as they enjoyed another day of their happily ever afterlife in heaven.

i wonder what happened in "the french mistake" au. misha, kripke and singer died, sam and dean quit supernatural but their resignation was probably never processed, so if the series continued with just jared, jensen, edlund and sera (assuming it wasn't cancelled) then in that universe castiel's confession scene doesn't exist, supernatural focused more on the relationship between samdean, there are more wincest scenes and probably sam is canonically bisexual.

i love how dean canonically never feels guilty about doing fucked up things to sam not only because he thinks he owns sam and that he’s the only one who has the right to hurt him but also because he genuinely believes he does it for sam. it’s one of his most delicious character traits

Something I could always imagine is dean, on bed, with a laptop on his side, learning hairstyles and trying to ty up sam's hair with clippers while sam is sitting on the floor next to him focused on some cartoon on TV.

Sam who gets sent to Endverse and sees the condition the Impala is in and gets so depressed over it that Endverse Dean decides to fix it. And then he rails Sam in the backseat as god intended.
