honestly, i think one of the reasons i can tolerate julian’s early seasons' behaviour towards jadzia is the way he approaches miles in an almost identical way, being annoyingly persistent, desperate for any chance to spend time alone with them, incredibly uncomfortable moments of trying to get miles to use his first name, etc. etc.

and whether I read that as julian having a similar puppy crush on miles as he does on jadzia or interpret it as a platonic desperation to make friends, either way, it at least tells me that for all julians faults (and boy are there plenty to go around—) he at least… isn’t Like That towards jadzia because she’s a woman, y’know? he’s just Like That with everyone because he’s overenthusiastic and lacking in social graces.

like, his behaviour towards jadzia is super uncomfortable and all, but the fact that he then turns around and acts the exact same way to his middle aged male coworker just… it adds something in context that shifts it from “wow julian is really creepy with women” to “wow julian is an idiot with people” for me.

i mean he is still pretty creepy with women a lot of the time and has obvious issues with toxic masculinity but at least his horrendous ‘wear them down until they say yes’ approach is apparently just the only way he seems to have of getting to know people and making friends.

jealousy really is the driving force of DamiTim as a ship. love that for them. love how Tim has the Robin mantle ripped away from him and he has to suffer the jealousy of watching Dick and Damian bond. how possessive over Dick Tim can be, to have him stolen by Dick.

even more so though, is the jealousy from Damian. how on earth do you cope when you finally get to be Robin, a role you've convinced is your birthright, and no one really likes you? every prefers the Robin who came before you? Dick regularly reminds you that he can always go and call Tim back when you act out? like the complex Damian has over Tim is unreal. Tim, who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and had everything handed to him his whole life. he never had to struggle or fight for his place like Damian did. Damian has spent his whole life fighting and proving himself, and yet he can't ever seem to truly claw the mantle of Robin away from Tim. even when Tim lets it go, becomes Red Robin, they seem to share it. Tim can slip back into the role of Robin whenever someone like Dick or Bruce need him to, because *he's* the Robin who they need. he's the Robin who was able to find Bruce. he's the Robin that Ra's wants an heir out of. he's the Robin who even Jason respects. in Damian's eyes, everything Damian has fought tooth and nail for, was handed to Tim.

so of course he's going to react to Tim with violence and aggression, especially after finding out Tim has contingency plans for him. no matter how much Damian proves himself, he's never going to be enough, especially not to Tim. and so his deep refusal to see Tim as family, to acknowledge Tim's legacy is all driven by such an angry jealousy. Tim understands aspects of Bruce's legacy that Damian doesn't, like the need to sweet talk and play nice with the elites of Gotham, even if they're corrupt. they exemplify different aspects of Robin, and the aspects that Tim exemplifies are the aspects that Damian knows he'll never fully understand and therefore holds such a deep contempt for. he wants to fight criminals, not play nice with politicians. Tim understands the side of Gotham that's utterly foreign to Damian. if anything, he represents that side of Gotham, to Damian. a pretty little rich boy who's nothing but a know-it-all and not a real son of Bruce. he can't be a Wayne. he can't be Damian's family.

and all of that angry jealousy leading to unhealthy obsession turned a weird, angry crush from Damian is just my bread and butter. that is how DamiTim should be. to me. Damian obsessed over hating Tim Drake so much he accidentally ends up sort of in love with him and that only makes Damian angrier. because he can't prove everyone right by *also* liking Tim. he can't let Ra's win like that, because frankly why wouldn't Ra's be delighted by Damian and Tim getting together. and it builds and builds with angry passive aggression towards Tim that culminates in angry hate-fucking-that's-not-just-driven-by-hate. love and hate are always viewed as opposites in shipping and i think they're the same intense passion just in different directions. and for the best ships, they're very intertwined. what is DamiTim is not the peak of that. "i put so much of myself into hating you i had no choice but to fall in love with you somewhere along the way" core. love that bleeds into hate and hate that bleeds into love. "you make me so angry i regularly passively try to kill you but not with any real effort because who would i obsess over if you were actually gone" core. murder attempts as a form of courting. contingency plans to take each other out as a love language. they're unwell.

and then they go out and get ice cream. sometimes the murderers need to take a break from murdering and just do NORMAL crime yk???

the thing about clark re: kon's early living situation is that you really cannot argue that clark was negligent for two reasons. a) clark was not responsible for him. cadmus was, and dubbilex was, and if anyone was negligent of kon's needs and situation it should be dubbilex, but moreover b) the writers did not acknowledge that anything about kon's situation was fucked up and the kind of thing that should merit adult intervention.

like, there are plenty of adults in kon's life other than clark who feasibly should have said something about tana dating him. sam makoa was right there! the man's a police officer who watched this adult woman go report on her boyfriend's first day in high school as a freshman and was like "yeah that seems fine haha" like ???

and we know it's because karl kesel & co simply did not see a problem with kon and tana dating. no one at dc did! we see this in sins of youth superman jr and superboy sr. we see this in adventures of superman #541. clark is written to not see anything wrong with it because karl kesel didn't see anything wrong with it! and clark is far from the only adult in kon's life. clark did not live with kon. clark was not kon's primary adult caretaker. not even close.

so why is it that people like to point fingers at clark for negligence first and foremost? is it because people still assume that a genetic link = responsibility, or because clark "should have" known better (despite. you know. being written sometimes by karl kesel) just because he's superman?

like idk man i just think any discussion of kon's history with grooming and abuse that doesn't factor in karl kesel's biases as a writer is fundamentally missing the point. yes, superman is a character that would act to protect a child if he knew that child was being preyed upon and exploited. yes, kon was a child being preyed upon and exploited. no, superman did not know about it, because the narrative was written by a man who would not acknowledge it as such.

of course, that involves doing some restructuring of how it ought to have played out - like, just bc karl kesel saw nothing wrong with kontana does not mean that there's nothing wrong with a 23yo dating a 15-16yo. so clark and lois meeting up with kon and tana during their honeymoon feels off. that convo during sins of youth feels off. there are a good few of these instances, and there are certainly discussions to be had on how to interpret them because of that lens of authoriaal bias. but to pin blame on clark as a character (as opposed to, say, dubbilex or makoa) is such a reductive reading to me.
