The thing about grief is that no one gets it until they've been there. And every kind of loss is different. Losing a pet hurts because our love for pets is uncomplicated. Losing a parent makes the world feel as if it's tilted off its axis and us feel as if we've been cast adrift. Losing a child is losing a part of yourself. Losing a spouse means losing 2/3 of yourself -- the "you" and the "us." All that's left is the "me."
