Welcome to the ENGin Program!
What is the ENGin Program?
The ENGin Program is a non-profit organization geared towards helping young Ukrainians gain English skills. The organization also aims to establish cross-cultural connections between Ukrainians and people in other countries across the globe. Through English fluency and culture literacy, ENGin wants to connect Ukraine to the world.
How does the program work?
ENGin pairs young Ukrainians with English-speaking volunteers. In weekly virtual sessions, these Ukrainians practice their English and share and learn from different cultures. These sessions are free of charge and available to Ukrainians age 9-35.
How does ENGin support Ukraine during the war?
When the war is over, Ukraine will need to rebuild itself from the ground up. This rebuilding can only happen through investment from foreign companies and international organizations. But for this to be possible, more Ukrainians need to learn to communicate confidently in English. And, in a time when Russia is trying to isolate Ukraine from the rest of the world, it's more important than ever for Ukrainians to connect with people worldwide.
By giving free English lessons through people of countless different backgrounds, ENGin hopes to create a generation of English-fluent, culturally competent young Ukrainians to rebuild their homeland.
Does the ENGin Program work?
The numbers speak for themselves!
As of 2022, ENGin has served 16,350 Ukrainians. In the next five years, the program hopes to reach its goal of 100,000 students.
93% of ENGin students see significant progress within three months of enrollment. As for the volunteers, 95% of them are happy with their student match!
How do I get involved with ENGin?
It's easy! Just go to the volunteer tab on our home page. Becoming a volunteer is an incredibly easy process. ENGin only has three requirements for applicants:
Must be fluent in English.
Must be 13 or older.
Must be able to commit to at least one hour of sessions per week. If you want to volunteer more hours, we can accommodate that!
Volunteer today and make a difference in a young Ukrainian's life!

If anyone’s interested in helping out with the recovery for Hurricane Debby, please consider volunteering with Nechema. It’s a Jewish organization but you don’t need to be Jewish to join, and it’s entirely virtual.
From an email I received, lightly edited for clarity:
Due to the risk of flash floods and storm surges, disaster assessments have been slower than usual. NECHAMA has been asked to help identify areas of need in Florida through Crisis Cleanup, a nonprofit disaster work order management platform that utilizes volunteer resources from registered agencies. This vital task ensures several key objectives:
- Victims can report damage and get enlisted to receive services.
- The extent of the storm damage can be further analyzed.
- Local emergency managers know where to send immediate aid.
This volunteer opportunity is completely virtual and will allow you to make a significant contribution to our hurricane response from the comfort of your home. NECHAMA will host a virtual training call for this opportunity on Thursday, August 8 at 6:30 PM Central/7:30 PM Eastern.

PEACEFULLIFESTYLES P.C.S.
Peaceful Lifestyles, the Best Way to Live!
Peace Brigades International: Provides protective accompaniment to human rights defenders.
I have always been fascinated with their work: concern with human rights violations in the context of the war in Ukraine and the escalation of the conflict everywhere. This program is incredibly amazing and inspirational. It makes you feel that you could volunteer if you were young again. Natanael

(list at the bottom of things you can do to help make progressive change)
And for anyone tempted to think, 'Well, we survived Trump's first term,' first, not everyone did, and it should hopefully be very clear by now a second Trump term really does promise to be far, far worse
I see this^ argument a lot in defense of not voting, mostly from people who are genuinely trying to make a change, and who see abstaining from voting as a form of protest hoping to move the Dems away from center.
I would ask that those people please consider:
Conservatives also want you to not vote. They want as few people to vote as possible in general, but folx on the left especially. Conservatives have cut early voting, attacked mail-in ballots, closed polling places in poor and POC neighborhoods, etc. That alone should tell you how important it is to vote. They wouldn't work so hard to prevent you from voting if your vote didn't matter. Don't do their work for them! Vote!
Not voting doesn't work. People already tried non-voting as a protest in 2016. It didn't work. It didn't hurt Biden, or the establishment, or change Dem tactics. It only hurt vulnerable Americans who depend on government programs, gender affirming care, disability protections, etc. 55% of voting-age Americans chose not to vote in 2016. It landed Trump in the White House, allowing the GOP to systematically whittle away basic rights, protections, and regulations. Was it worth it? Did the Dems learn or change their tune? No! The Dems ran Joe Biden again anyway in 2020! It's awful and it sucks but the reality is that entrenched neoliberal Dems don't care about your protest vote. They can raise money regardless of who's in the White House and they're shielded from the consequences by their own wealth (as has been said many times: politicians' wives and daughters will always have abortion access, and politicians have long enjoyed the robust public healthcare they demonize in public). If you are abstaining from voting in the hopes of driving the Dems further from the center, the data simply does not support that strategy.
But you're not voting for the sake of a politician, anyway. I didn't vote in 2020 because I thought it would make Joe Biden smile. I voted in 2020 so that fewer Americans would die as a direct result of government policy. That's the same reason I'll be voting this year. To quote from this post:
Voting abstinence/sabotage does not absolve us of our responsibility to do everything in our power to lessen harm, but it DOES show that when our personal morals aren’t satisfied, we retreat into (imperialist, this time) privilege to ‘wash our hands’ of the situation and declare it’s not our fault and it’s not our problem. In other words “I know the trolley is gonna kill more people this way but the lever is icky and it’s more important that my hands don’t feel gross than it is that fewer people die.
4. Biden has been shit about Palestine, but Trump would be even worse. I know a lot of people are refusing to vote for Biden because of his absolutely vile Israel-propagandist behavior. I'm as disgusted as you are, but there is no doubt that Trump would be even more genocidal. Trump wanted to launch missiles into Mexico, in case you've forgotten. Do you think Trump wouldn't launch missiles into Gaza? He's already repeatedly said Israel should "finish the job"/"hurry up", etc. Trump has also promised for years to criminalize or even shoot protestors. Recently Trump said pro-Palestine students are "lunatics and Hamas sympathizers" laying "seige", and that he would deport pro-Palestine protestors from the US. Trump would probably be even more anti-Palestine if Netanyahu apologized for 'betraying' Trump. They were quite chummy when Trump was in office! And make no mistake: plenty of dictators know exactly how to manage Trump to get him on their side. And speaking of which: Russia is still actively invading Ukraine (which Trump called a "genius" move by Putin). The GOP are already trying to stop supplying aid to Ukraine; do you think they wouldn't seize on the opportunity as soon as Trump came to power? When Putin is his bestie?
5. Look, there are a million different points I could cover here, like Conservative plans to reverse gay marriage, to outlaw contraception, to criminalize living with a member of the opposite sex before marriage, to not only ban mentions of gender in schools but also remove terms like "sexual orientation" or "gender" from existing federal legislation, to attack protections for trans folx and gender-affirming care, to eliminate vital departments like Education, to abolish even more environmental protections, to expand tax cuts for billionaires and corporations, to kill any hopes of public healthcare, to make it harder for kids in poverty to get food assistance (and you know he'll go through with this one because he already tried), etc.
But even if you feel Biden and Trump are equally bad, surely we can agree on the fact that Trump's appointees to the Supreme Court have been an absolute disaster for the US. Not only did they overturn Roe v Wade and announce their intention to come for gay marriage next, just in this single session SCOTUS has:
all but legalized political bribes
given Trump "absolute immunity" to commit crimes in the White House without consequence for anything deemed an "official act"
made it harder for federal agencies to regulate shit companies and make federal mandates
made it harder to prosecute Jan 6 coup crazies
made it legal for cities to criminalize homelessness
made it harder to prosecute securities fraud (when companies/financial advisors/etc. lie to investors to steal their money or manipulate markets)
overturned the federal ban on bump stock devices (which basically allow you to 3D print something to turn a regular gun into a machine gun)
allowed South Carolina to intentionally disempower Black voters via their gerrymandered-to-hell districts
Even if you think Biden is literally no better than Trump (and believe me, I get why people could feel that way), can we at least agree that Trump would pick the worst possible people for the Supreme Court? Who are lifetime appointees? Even if literally everything else is equal, is that not enough of a reason to vote?
Quoting this post again:
if the candidates hold the same views on issue 1, look at issue 2, and issue 3, and issue 4. you WILL find ways to differentiate them and find that one of them is more closely aligned with your views.
I am literally begging people: please do not fall into the Conservative psy-op trap of thinking the best thing you can do for progress is not vote. Your vote is essential. That's why Conservatives work so hard to take it from you.
If you're feeling understandably frustrated by your presidential options, I compiled a decent list of some things you can do to work toward progress so lemme repost them:
Vote for LOCAL progressive candidates. None of the recent anti-abortion or anti-trans bills were federal. Your state, county, and even city gov matter. Find your local candidates here, or google your city name + “progressive voter guide”. Bernie Sanders’ website used to have a progressive voter guide page but it’s down at the moment. It’s usually located here in case it comes back up.
Donate to or volunteer for your local progressive candidate. They have an uphill battle since they’re usually going up against opponents with way more financial backing, they could use your help. I’ve volunteered as a poll watcher/vote counter before and I can tell you our local area was decided by less than 5 votes per box. Tiny amounts matter!
If you don’t have a local campaign or candidate to support, you can donate to or volunteer for organizations that help get under-represented populations to the polls for local AND presidential elections nationwide. This includes everything from letter-writing campaigns to free rides to polling places. Some examples are: Vote Forward, the New Georgia Project’s Rides to the Polls initiative, write postcards for swing states via the Progressive Turnout Project, etc.
Volunteer with the Democratic Socialists of America, who organize all sorts of initiatives to improve local communities, pass progressive laws, and support progressive candidates. you can find your local youth chapter or regular chapter. Even if you don’t feel like joining or don’t have time to volunteer, you can still donate to a chapter either locally or in a swing state to make a positive impact!
If your job has a union, you can join it! If your parents’ jobs have unions you can encourage them to join theirs! Unions have been at the forefront of progressive change since they began. They organize and attend protests, support laws that protect workers, and fight for workers’ rights. Many cities also have city-wide tenant unions to help fight predatory landlords and promote legal protections for tenants.
Lastly, when an important vote comes up, you can email or call your senators, representatives, etc. and tell them how you want them to vote! Even the most selfish politicians still want to keep their jobs and enough people voicing their opinion CAN make a difference (this is actually a huge part of NRA strategy). Enter your address into this tool and it will tell you ALL your representatives from the president down to local clerks and election officials. For example, I typed a random address (literally typed 1 and let it autofill) and:
I hope that helps! Go out and make some positive change in the world today and don't forget to vote!!
youtube
"- I have a lot of problems with Biden. He is clearly the better of the two options, which I recognize is a very low bar. Being better than Trump cannot be the standard, because Donald Trump is the absence of a standard.
"But the truth is, even if Trump looses, that won't be the end of this. The people who cooked up Project 2025 will just move onto Project 2029 instead, because for them, this is so much more than just one election, or indeed, one candidate. Project 2025 is born from impulse as old as America. It's an impulse that says one class of Americans is entitled to lead, and the rest of us are lucky to be allowed to serve- that thinks there should be a limited government when it comes to rules they have to live by, but also a unitary executive to keep the rest of us in line. These are old, old ideas that have been shouted from podiums-... but have now been placed into a new handbook for an only too willing president to use on day one.
"And in a perfect world, I would love if we had an opposing party better able to articulate a strong defense of our country's ideals and that also consistently lived up to them. People are entitled to hope for more from the next four years than someone just not being Trump (and for at least two supreme court justices to die)-...
"And for anyone tempted to think, 'Well, we survived Trump's first term,' first, not everyone did, and it should hopefully be very clear by now a second Trump term really does promise to be far, far worse, because if Trump's first term was defined by chaos, his second could be defined by ruthless efficiency. That should be troubling to absolutely everyone because Project 2025 is a movement who's members joke about wanting a white homeland and insist women have to have more babies to uphold western society.-
"We need to be better than this."

Meet Chuck, one of our amazing volunteers at Mount Rainier National Park! Chuck was born in Portland, Maine, but grew up in western Massachusetts. He has volunteered with our Meadow Rover program for about 6 years, and our Winter Interpretive programs for 5. Volunteering is Chuck’s way to give back to the park, protect the resources, and interact, educate, and assist the many visitors that come to the park. High Lakes trail, especially Far Away Rock, is Chuck’s favorite place inside the park. When Chuck is not at Mount Rainier, he enjoys bicycling on the Green River in Kent, the Foot Hills Trail from Orting to Buckley, doing training hikes in Dash Point State Park, and spending warm beach days at Alki Beach in West Seattle. Growing up, his favorite place to recreate was in Chesterfield Scout Reservation in Massachusetts where he first learned wilderness skills, camping, and snowshoeing in the winter. He also did a lot of hiking and camping on portions of the AT throughout New England.
