Discovering Tsukasa: A Quaint Hideaway in Yokohamabashi's Back Streets
Location: Yokohamabashi, Minami Ward, Yokohama, Japan Timestamp: 18:40 on December 19, 2023
Fujifilm X100V with 5% diffusion filter ISO 160 for 1.0 sec. at ƒ/6.4 Astia/Soft film simulation
Venturing into the dark, narrow alleys branching off from the brightly lit main drag of Yokohamabashi Shotengai shopping street, I discovered a quaint bar and eatery named “Tsukasa.”
The establishment, run by an elderly woman, served homemade dishes and drinks to customers engrossed in the sports news broadcast from a tiny TV perched atop a refrigerator in the corner behind the kitchen counter.
Inebriated salarymen in business suits and equally red-faced blue-collar workers, still in their factory uniforms, laughed loudly and became vocally excited about the baseball news emanating from the small screen.
This shop, absent from Google Maps with zero online reviews, barely seems to exist in the modern world. The only way to discover it is through word of mouth or by stumbling upon it while meandering through the back alleys branching off from Yokohamabashi Shotengai’s brightly lit main street.
As mentioned in previous posts, I appreciate the wide variety of noren curtains, particularly those with charming, traditional designs that hint at the owner's character, the establishment's vibe, and sometimes reveal a shop’s heritage.
I love the understated noren of this shop with its classic indigo blue called “ai” (藍) in Japanese. This indigo, made from the leaves of the Japanese indigo plant, was initially used by aristocrats and samurai. It can now be found adding color to everything from kimonos, blue jeans, linen, and of course, noren curtains.
The young bamboo plant motifs in the noren blend well with the real potted bamboo plant positioned just below it.
The storefront sign indicates “Sapporo” (the type of beer served at the shop) and, from top to bottom, right to left, reads “家庭料理・katei ryōri,” which means homemade cooking, and “つかさ・Tsukasa,” likely the owner’s name. Next time I visit, I hope to remember to ask about the origin of the name!
Explore other shops near Yokohamabashi Shotengai, and find references to related articles for further reading on my blog post: https://www.pix4japan.com/blog/20231219-yokohamabashi

I've been avoiding Tumblr and Twitter since I haven't watched AYS yet... I have no excuse... it just never felt like the perfect moment, you know? But yesterday I bought my ticket to I Am Still! Should've done it sooner, the tickets were almost sold out, oops...
Anyway, this is a big day for kpop, with many songs dropping, but sadly not hitting for me.
Neva Play was a bit disappointing- Megan is an amazing rapper and she's a very clever lyricist, but her lyrics are always about the same thing and often sound misogynistic. She's very hit and miss, but her solo songs can be very good (I really love Hiss). I also think her voice doesn't go with RM's. It's bright and snappy whilst Joon's tone is smooth and has a bit of a drawl? I didn't really get RM's lyrics. The vocal production on his part was very weird too. The song would've been better if it was just Megan or RM's, but the both of them don't match? They give the same vibes but different frequencies lmao. The song is good, but underwhelming. I like it the more I listen to it. The weakest part is by far the chorus, which is annoying. The song ends a bit abruptly too and the structure is basic - Megan raps, then Joon raps. it. It was less of a collab and more of a copy and paste of vocals. Sadly, most collabs are like this. I just think they had an opportunity to gag everyone and delivered something pretty basic.
I also checked-out MEOVV's debut song, which was... not even bad enough to stand out. They looked like a cheap NJs and BP cross-over. The MV was crappy, the song was not age appropriate, and the lyrics sounded ridiculous coming from rookie idols...
Baekhyun and Chanyeol also came out with songs and both are unmemorable to me. If I didn't know any better, I wouldn't guess Baekhyun left SM. All these soloists leaving SM, but their music and concept stay the same. I hope everything else is worth it.
I'll review Tzuyu's album in another post...

Sixfonia Music Review
I don't really care for vtubers as a genre, but recently, I've been following this one vsinger group for their non-music content because "haha funy". After a while, I decided to listen to some of their songs because I'm a self-proclaimed music enjoyer, and the result was.... not good.
(I was initially gonna keep this off tumblr, but I have so much to say about their songs that I decided to review all of them here.)
First things first, 90% of their songs are normal straight boy love songs, so I won't be talking about their lyrics. Also, I feel like most, if not all of the instrumentals in their songs are done by computer simulations and not actual instruments, which is disappointing.
youtube
J0KER×JOK3R: This is the song they use in the end-cards of all their videos, so I've been forced to listen to the chorus A LOT. I didn't really like it at first, but it started growing on me, and one of the guys (the green one) screamed before the final chorus, and screaming always makes a song better.
youtube
SHALL WE GONG!?!? -1st battle-: Boy do I have stuff to say about this one. First, the word "Gong". The first thing it brings to mind is "dong". I think it's supposed to be the Mandarin word 攻, but since that's also a bl term for tops, I can only think of dirty things looking at the title.
Onto the actual song. It starts with an AI woman saying "This is not an ordinary record." You'd think that'd be enough of a red flag, but tbh... this song is actually kinda enjoyable for me. It's mostly rapping (something they do a lot), but there's another shout before the final chorus, which, as I said, always makes a song better.
youtube
eND oF FaNTaSY.: As a tumblr user, I cannot look at the sprites in this video without going "Little German boy????" When I first started listening to this one, I was like "wtf this is so good??" I like how the instrumentals actually get quieter during the chorus, and the flow is pretty good UNTIL the final chorus, where everything falls apart. They decided to raise the key, add in some jingles, and piano keys being pressed one by one, which ruins the song's vibe and makes it sound like an ice cream truck's jingle.
youtube
SCRaP&ReV0LuT1oN: This one's such a mess. They start, with no intro, by singing the chorus, which starts with "Let the opera resound," shaping it up to be a neo-classical song, but they started scat singing right after that?? Also, during the verses, I can't tell if they're singing off beat, or if the beat is off them. It's one of the most disjointed songs I've ever heard, but at least the chorus slaps.
youtube
絶対!キメツケ症候群: It's a goofy 47-second song. Not much to say besides that.
youtube
Can We Jazz?: No, we can't. This is the point where I realized they really like starting with vocals and no intro. The beat is really loud and I don't really like the melody, but it doesn't sound outright ugly like some of their other songs. Overall mid.
youtube
六陣革命: This one's lit. Not many funny things to say about this. The visuals are inspired by the taisho period, which is... not good (also another can of worms that I can make a whole different post about), but if you're willing to ignore that, it's a really solid song.
youtube
ただ想う、君がため。: It's a really good ballad. Beautiful melody. The harmonies (?) during the chorus are a bit too loud compared to the main melody, but that's easy to get used to after a few listens. Funny though, how this is, iirc, their only song with no rap break, even though ballads with slow rapping do exist, and they seem to put rapping in every song they can.
youtube
6-4-Sweets: This one's just mid. Not much else to say.
youtube
「好き」のかくれんぼ: I know the EXACT vibe they're trying to go for, but damn, does this just sound bad. I don't like comparing artists with each other, but this sounds like a cheap rip-off of AKB48's Iiwake Maybe and other similar songs, so why would I listen to this (which doesn't even have a good chorus), when better songs with the exact same subject and vibes exist?
(I can't post anymore videos, so I'll be continuing this in a reblog)

My (Review? lmao) Thoughts about The RENAISSANCE World Tour That No One Asked For
BITCH I WAS NOT OMFGGGGG
I am SO glad I stayed away from clips of the show (for the most part lol) truly made the experience extremely special. like this is really my GOAT. THEE GOAT. And I got to witness her live and in person for a second time. I'm sooooo grateful and hopefully I'll have another opprotunity.
BUT WE ALREADY KNOW SHE'S THAT GWORL SO IMMA FOCUS ON THE DANCERS!
Amari Marshall is a fucking STAR. That's all I could think whenever I saw her. Stage presense on 100000. She's impactful.
Les Twins were utilized very well! I haven't seen them dance much since i hung up my fangirl cape, lol, but their dancing felt soooo familiar and I really enjoyed them 🥰
DANCE CAPTAIN HANNAH DLAINE! Y'all like to try my girl, but I loved everything she was doing on that stage. She may look diferent next to other dancers, but those lines, technique, elegance, that CLEAN look makes her great and Bey's fave 🤭
Simone showed up and showed out for her hometown! Definitely took notice of that. Ai, Alannah, and Brianna really held it down like the OGs they are. Kyndall may be the baby on tour, but she definitely rises to the occasion! love ha. Trinity is so radiant! Truly. This is her first big gig and she's definitely not taking it for granted. a PROFESSIONAL. Lisa, Nerita, ans Aakilah are all sooooo STUNNING? Truly shook looking at the three of them. Ms. Aliyah Janell doeeeeees thiiiiiiiiis lmao she was eating it up!
The boys, Rob, Zavion, Jus, Konkrete held it dooooown. They were utiilzed so well, especially in comparison to the boys on OTR2, no shade chile 🙃
Darius is also VERY STUNNING. FACE. CARD. and he can dance his ass off some ppl really have it all 😌. I loooved watching Carlos lmao idk what is was but i always found him whenever he was on stage 💕💕💕 And Jonté! Male Beyoncé himself! an undeniable talent.
and a special shoutout to Cha Cha Balenciaga! ate that ball right on up!
BLUE IVY THEE CARTER. That is all.
As for the choreography, I love the direction Fatima took it in. I know there's been criticism over how much Bey is dancing, but I think its the perfect balance of dance and vocals. I don't feel like I'm missing anything. the choreo matches the vibe of the album, of the era perfectly.
MOVE is my fave choreo at the moment, but now that I can watch clips lmao, that might change! I just cant get that Move Your Body Girl/Free Mind mashup out of my head 😌
This was just me writing down my thoughts so I’ll always be able to go back and reminisce on how I felt. If you read this whole thing, just know...
I love you deep deep deep deep 🥰🥰🥰

i wrote this while listening to the songs and did not proofread so sorry if it’s incomprehensible + i’m putting it under a cut bc i talked A Lot. i just don’t understand this album. i think a lot of the songs would’ve been ranked a lot higher if listened to on their own / in little groups and not all crammed in one album together because there is no coherent genre or vibe. if i was ready for soft, pretty lofi shit i would’ve probably ranked through the blue and skeletons higher, but i’d already been enticed by overkill and donmai. idk. anyway! actually listened to phantomime review & ranking (low to high this time oops):
10. through the blue: i’m used to the lowkeyed shit by now i think. cute intro. cute verse. not what i’ve grown to love from calli but by now this girl does every fucking genre under the sun so what did i expect. it’s great for what it is, once again, i have no idea why it’s in an album with overkill. the thing with this album is it can’t seem to pick a vibe. it opens with three really loud upbeat tracks, overkill is basically rock/metal… cult following is also very metal… and then like. does this. i’m confused lmao and this is not my preferred genre i’m sorry calli 💔 it’s cute. it’s fine. whatever. 4/10 somehow worse than sneaking oops
9. sneaking revenge: not my fav. worse than og sneaking i think. i don’t tend to like features that much bc like. i’m here to listen to calli not some random guy and i especially am not a fan of this guy’s voice in particular. it’s fine but im not happy about it. 4/10
8. cult following: fun and enticing intro even if the 7 seconds of silence made me a little bit confused. i’m loving the transition from aggressive whisper to soft vocals but i am not necessarily loving the amount of time that the soft vocals last or the transition from soft vocals to shouting. it seems a little out of place and i don’t really like the sound of either of them. the hook is not that good. i’m not sure if metal is calli’s scene. i know in my pre review i was like “lmao this is gonna end up hardcore for everything but the promo!” for one of the songs… and then this one was… but i do not like it lmao. would’ve been ranked even lower but extra points added for calli’s vocals i didn’t know that girl could SCREAM like that! 5/10
7. skeletons: disappointing intro ngl im sorry but we’ve learned by now that im not into slow stuff. also calli’s voice sometimes has like weirdly shadowed tones especially when she’s being quiet and i don’t. really. like it that much. don’t kill me lmao and do not let it be perceived that i don’t adore calli’s singing voice bc i do it’s just like. why r u doing that. seems more fit for a lofi album than an album that kicks off with tide ft. AI. the rap part could grow on me though ngl i think im gonna like this more once i listen to it again a few times. for now though: 6/10.
6. tide: solid song. the novelty of it has worn off which might be why i’ve not ranked it any higher? but for an album opener it’s GREAT. idk if it sets any sort of tone yet but i love it on its own! the harmonies are great :) 7/10
5. midnight mayoi: god i fucking love kobo she’s so CUTE. it’s a little more lowkey than i tend to like, in general, but the vocals are also really pretty and good GOD is this song earwormy. kobo’s voice is so cute i know i already said this but holy shit. the harmonies are also really tasty! very cute song :) owah owah oh… 7/10
4. go-getters: absolute banger this song has everything! the style is something we really haven’t seen from calli before, it’s more poppy than i’d normally like but i’m into it anyway. the vocals are flawless and everything seems so clean despite there being SO MUCH going on lmao i fucking love this song. 8/10
3. overkill: oops i’m scared of ranking it too high but i DO think it’s better than GG. it’s definitely more my style and waaaa the vocals are so fucking tasty i <3 calli. 9/10
2. DONMAI: oooh sassy vocals… god i fucking love calli’s singing voice. i can always appreciate a good rap interlude. the chorus BANGS. calli’s voice is SO SMOOTH like her low notes are soft and enticing and then her high notes are so powerful goddd i love her lmao this song is so good. the bridge is perfect. saxophone!!!!!! 9/10 (note: i realised that while writing to this i was biased by my pre review so i listened to it again after hearing the album as a whole and… yeah no it still goes hard af 9/10)
1. last days: just as soft and slow as skeletons tbh BUT it picks up by the prechorus, the chorus is actually really strong and FUCK that high note is impressive!!! i don’t have the music theory words to describe this but i love the uh. chord… progression… is that the word? lmao. second verse is significantly quicker than the first and i actually really really love this song holy shit… the emotion in the bridge is like. heart wrenching. the harmonies? THE BEAT DROP? WHAT THE FUCK???? 9/10 better than DONMAI

Sera Myu: Musical Festival -Chronicle- Review
You know when something just hits you deep in your core and you can’t help but be a sobbing mess on the floor? Yes, that was me.
When this musical was first announced, I really had no idea what to expect. I had predicted it would be like an Ai no Sanctuary 2.0, and then they said it would be mostly Kaguya-Hime songs, that turned out to be a big ass lie. WHICH I’m grateful for. Not that I don’t love those songs, but the musical was truly something beautiful and shiny and celebrates the history of Myu in its own beautiful way! The song list is mainly NelkeMyu songs (2013-2017, NogiMyu, The Super Live) with a tiny sprinkle of Bandai thrown in for flavor (though, they are newer versions as seen in NogiMyu and The Super Live). Speaking of new arrangements, nearly every song was re-arranged! Whether it be new instruments, new lyrics, or something along those lines, all except a very few songs were re-arranged for the musical and I love the new feel to songs! And the 2 new songs (Chronicle the Story of Sailor Moon and Eternal Cycle) are SO good. Eternal Cycle in particular made me start crying with how beautiful it was.
The cast REALLY showed off. I saw both the second-to-last and the senshuuraku performances. While the vocals are better in the earlier show, the emotions are much stronger in the final show. Riko-Moon in particular REALLY redeemed herself for me. I liked her last musical, but I REALLY loved her this time. She really put her all in this time, and I’m SO proud of her. Her vocals snatched me in the earlier showing, and her determination and power wowed me in the senshuuraku. I’m so grateful she got to play her again. ;w;
I have to address the elephant in the room. Kisara’s vocals. If you remember last year, she nearly had the best vocals out of all the inners. However, I could tell even in the first day’s livestream, she was lip-syncing. And this year, we found out why. Kisara really struggles at live singing. There were some times she sounded pretty okay (when she sings high in her head voice, she sounds really good most of the time), but her voice breaks when singing low. Which is kinda bad when you’re playing Sailor Jupiter... ^^; Some friends in the SoS Discord think she was sick. It’s a possibility. IDK how to feel Because I lowkey felt like she broke immersion a bit in some songs, but I really like her as Jupiter at the same time. I’m torn. ;-;
MVP award goes to miss Riona Tatemichi who has climbed ALL THE WAY to the TOP of my favorite Tux list. Yes, she beat out the previously untouchable Yu Shirota. She made an extremely gay man swoon. SHE DID THAT, SHE DESERVES THAT SPOT. xD
MVP AWARD ALSO GOES TO MISS CHISE NIITSU. HELLO? NEW FAVORITE CHIBI MOON. She really REALLY leveled up from her Chibi Chibi days. I actually wasn’t huge on her Chibi Chibi back in the day and vastly preferred Hinari. But she was SUCH a cute Chibiusa with a powerful, strong voice! I can’t help but love her!
I’m just generally in love with the current outers. Shinju-Uranus grew on me this musical. I think she pairs really well with Ayana and MISS AYANA?! NEW FAVE NEPTUNE AS WELL WTF AND MISS YUKA IDE? NEW FAVE SATURN. This Musical gave me a bunch of new faves. Chisato-Pluto also FINALLY got a chance to shine and QUEEN I LOVE YOU. (Still mad Nelke hasn’t given you a solo song or at least let you cover Chronos Guardian though ;O; )
If you want a story summary, check out @crazykacey‘s! I don’t understand Japanese, so I actually used his review and context of watching to understand the musical. All I can say is fantastic BandaiMyu vibes and a very fun musical! I’m pretty tired after this Musical season. I really went in on reporting (on Twitter and Discord LMAO) and doing some things (which will be revealed in the near future) so IDK how to end this review. Long story short, the musical is really worth your time and from the very beginning, you’re probably gonna cry. It’s a great time, and I hope you all get the chance to see it! ALSO PRE-ORDER THE DVD OR BLU-RAY. Thank you. XD

It’s officially the 9th of December in Japan which means it’s the release day of 『Wakana Covers ~Anime Classics~』! BANZAI! The album is now available for purchase in digital format in Japanese stores.
❗Please SUPPORT Wakana and BUY her album❗ ❗BUY a PHYSICAL COPY on CDJapan❗ ❗BUY it digitally on MORA JAPAN ~ TUTORIAL (no OTOTOY this time)❗ ❗Check your local iTunes store and Spotify after midnight❗
Here’s a quick REVIEW
THIS IS A GREAT ALBUM. I LOVE IT!! The tracklist is not what I would have hoped for but then again, I only know a handful of old anime songs so it’s really no surprise that none of them made it onto the album. I wasn’t really familiar with any of Wakana’s chosen songs but to her credit, she made me fall in love with almost all of them. The only tracks I do not like are “Yatsura No Ashioto No Ballade” and “Rain” but that’s not Wakana’s fault, it’s just that I do not care for those types of songs. Wakana’s vocals are really solid throughout the album, her voice was made for classical arrangements like this and I am forever grateful we are getting a full album and a concert on top of that. There are just a few sections here and there where I am not too happy with her choice of singing style but it doesn’t take away from my enjoyment. Question: Is it just me or are the instruments (strings in particular) overly loud sometimes? Occasionally they seem to almost drown out Wakana.
Detailed review below the cut〈(•ˇ‿ˇ•)-→
1. 時には昔の話を (Toki ni wa Mukashi no Hanashi wo) Arranger: Sin; I understand why they chose this as the leading track to promote the album. Everything about it is absolutely beautiful, Wakana’s vocals, the arrangement, the lyrics, the PV (from what we have seen so far). I have mentioned it before but her “hashitta” in the second chorus(?) kills me every time. And the way the strings build up in the first and last chorus. Ahhh, be still my heart I cannot take it. Btw, I am still not sure if you consider those two last lines in each of the three verses a proper chorus or if the song just consists of three elaborate verses..? But for the sake of this review, I will call them choruses XD 2. やさしさに包まれたなら (Yasashisa ni Tsutsumareta Nara) Arranger: Miki Sakurai; Gorgeous arrangement (especially with the added tin whistle). Kinda reminds me of the Concerning Hobbits theme from LotR. I am a big fan of Celtic and folk-ish elements. Miki Sakurai apparently is a big fan too. After all, her “Yakusoku no Yoake” which she wrote for Wakana’s first album also had strong Celtic vibes. My favourite part of the song is when Wakana sings that final “meseeji” in the last chorus, the arrangement here is beautiful. Still think Wakana’s vocals are a bit too cutesy but hell, it’s a cute song so I guess it seems fitting. 3. Rain Arranger: Shu Kanematsu; Wakana sounds great but the song doesn’t do anything for me. T_T 4. いのちの名前 (Inochi no Namae) Arranger: Shu Kanematsu; OMG, this brought tears to my eyes. SO SO BEAUTIFUL. The way her voice just blends with the strings. Her vocals are a tad quiet though compared to the instruments. Or is it just me? 5. やつらの足音のバラード (Yatsura No Ashioto No Ballade) Arranger: Sin; I can’t put my finger on what exactly I don’t like about this but I can’t seem to get into it. I guess it sounds a little too jazz-y for me...or is it blues? Either way, not my cup of tea but I can see why Wakana would like it this way. And hey, she does pull it off perfectly so who am I to complain? On a side note, those lyrics are just so perfect for Wakana, she doesn’t often get the chance to sing about dinosaurs :P EDIT: Future!Sarah is coming back to revise her opinion. After listening to the album on repeat for hours on end, I now LOVE this song. It’s charming. 6. Get Wild Arranger: Sin; One of the coolest arrangements on this album!! The strings are just PERFECTION. And Wakana SLAYS!! Who would have thought she can pull off a song like that. I mean, we already knew from gettign that teaser video but this is on a whole other level. Too much awesomeness. 7. 風のとおり道 (Kaze no Toorimichi) Arranger: Miki Sakurai; Ahhhhh, so precious and mystical, such a gorgeous arrangement!! I love how we start with just Wakana’s vocals. And then Miki Sakurai adds her magical touch again by inserting all those Celtic elements. The tin whistle fits perfectly. A couple of Wakana’s high notes no longer sound good to my ears here but overall I enjoy her singing. 8. 君をのせて (Kimi wo Nosete) Arranger: Sin; The arrangement is utterly charming, both the piano as well as the strings are perfect here, Wakana’s vocals in the verses are literally flawless. I kinda find myself wishing she had sung the chorus with a different voice though. Mind you, I don’t hate the one she is using here but it’s bordering on being a teeny-tiny bit too shrill and thin for my taste. It’s still solid (and nothing at all like her strained “ring your bell” voice let’s say) but it’s not what I personally enjoy most from her. Either way, I think she is hitting her notes just fine (as far as I can tell at least) and the style fits the overall sound of the song. Pus, they made up for the slightly thin vocals by adding a little harmony layer which I appreciate. 9. 愛にできることはまだあるかい (Ai ni dekiru koto wa mada aru kai) Arranger: Sin; Most of you may know this already but I am a HUGE fan of the cello so I am happy we have such a strong cello presence here. Those cello parts are so cool. Anyways, this turned out to be one of my favourite tracks even though I didn’t think I would ever like this song based on the YouTube teaser we got a while back. There is just so much raw emotion and fierceness in Wakana’s voice, towards the end she is hitting me right in the feels. I just can’t help but be drawn to the song. I am surprised by how well she handles songs that are originally sung by males. Her covers of this and “Get Wild” are just exceptional imo. They bring out a new side of Wakana which I really love. 10. 夢のゆくえ (Yume no Yukue) Arranger: Shu Kanematsu; While I didn’t know this song before listening to Wakana’s cover version, the melody reminded me a LOT of the old anime songs I used to like back in the day. The feeling of nostalgia is super strong in this one so naturally I enjoy it quite a bit. It’s not an outstandingly beautiful song or anything but the arrangement is lovely and Wakana’s vocals are on point.

Meeting Bomg, Doom-Drone Legends from Ukraine
~Interview by Billy Goate~
Doomed & Stoned continues our week of epic interviews with a long overdue conversation with the great Ukraine doom-drone band BOMG, who have been desamating stages and blowing out amps since 2010. During that time, Nikolay Temchenko (guitar), Yuriy Temchenko (bass), and Anton Khomenko (drums) have put out two mammoth LPs, an EP, and a split.
I first got turned on to BOMG's sound with the record 'Polynseed' (2013), which released the year that Doomed & Stoned was founded. I recommend starting there if this is your first exposure to the mighty trio from Kyiv.
Bomg have been gradually drifting in the direction of full-on drone metal, executed in their own authentic and compelling way, as we're about to discover as we drill into 'Peregrination' (2020) -- which we reviewed last year and Robustfellow has recently reissued.
Give ear...
You state that BOMG means “vagabond” on your Bandcamp page. Can you elaborate on how the name ties in with the band’s history and core identity?
It’s an abbreviation literally meaning “with no particular place of living”. Funny thing is that its’ meaning is degraded in common use (like “bum”), but when it was incepted (60s – 70s in USSR) those who were stigmatized by it were better off going elsewhere than being part of the regime, taking it as a positive. This became somewhat of a short-lived movement even. We think that despite being prone to misunderstanding in every way, it fits the overall vibe. Blessing and a curse. But frankly, the name is a secondary thing at best.
How would you describe your distinctive sound, to someone who has never encountered it before?
Basically, trying to elaborate and add to “Black Sabbath spaghettified” idea. We try to squeeze out any possible amount of low frequency, volume, distortion and effect saturation to the instruments, not necessarily designed for it. As of similarities and influences, it’s 60s-70s heavy psych, proto-metal and proto-punk, 80s - 90s continuation of it (doom metal, stoner/desert rock, sludge, drone doom), besides that – dub, ambient, prog rock, experimental music, field recordings and whatnot.
Peregrination by Bomg
Your new album 'Peregrination' is an explosive bombshell, massive in every respect. When was the concept for the album born?
The first track was almost ready in 2011, we played it at our first show. As of concept, it started to take shape somewhere in 2013-2014, most of the lyrics were written back then. Then it took years to “grow.” First, we tried to make it so each track would fit one side of LP, but it seemed kinda compressed and landed too quick. Then we decided not to confine it to any time limit but each track landed itself around 40 minutes, so we made sure it evens out like this in final recording.
Tell us about the recording process involved. We’re very curious about instruments, gear, amps, and the general studio environment in which it originated.
Each whole track was recorded live (took roughly four weeks for four tracks), then layered with two additional guitars. Synths, field recordings, vocals were added afterward.
Gear: we used two Tank amps (Orange/Matamp clones) made from old soviet broadcast amplifiers and Tesla Disco 240 for guitar and bass (wish our Sunn concert bass was alive at that point, but it just burns transistors when turned on – we couldn’t find an exact schematic for it, even photos of the exact amp on the web, seems like it’s from some transition period).
The drums are '70s Rogers 13”, 16” toms and 24” steel shell bass drum from '50s-'70s (mass-produced for political celebrations, weddings and funerals), coupled with Meinl hi-hats, Paiste Rude China and Zildjian Mega Bell.
Guitars used were early '00s Gibson SG Standard, '72 Musima Eterna Deluxe and ’69 Musima Record; and ‘70 Cremona Violin bass.
Pedals: Poltava fuzz-wah, Noname “flanger” that is actually phaser for bass; Tesla Vrable fuzz-wah (the seller told us that his uncle was under KGB investigation for just having it), Noname dist (most likely a ProCo Rat clone), Vox wah, Boss BF-2, Lel’ parametric EQ, Lel’ digital delay, Boss dynamic wah, Roland Space Echo for guitar.
Recording equipment: Two '70s Oktava ML-19 for overheads, '50s-'60s Oktava ML15 and ML16 for room and various dynamic and condenser mics for everything else into Pro Tools, then later in mixing/mastering stage partly routed through mixer and cassette deck using beaten up cassette for analog saturation and vibrato.
Long story short, we tried to use most of the stuff we got in our studio, and at this point, it’s hard to remember every detail of the process. Referring to the environment, it is compiled of numerous weird gadgets which got to us throughout years, most of which were collecting dust somewhere for decades, and have a history (an entire topic by itself) we’re always asking for. And when used, they tell a story which then leaves a mark in recordings for sure. That was a hell of a fascinating process.
I noticed you had lyrics for each song on 'Peregrination,' but the singing doesn't seem discernable. Are there indeed vocals and, if so, how can I hear them?
Yes, there are vocals. They appear on low volume as reverberated and somewhat oscillated notes, more like presence; on high volume, you can hear words with 1-5 kHz correctly dialed in (on most audio equipment these frequencies tend to be excited, so lowering EQ at this range brings clarity), it appears as a whisper in a loud, saturated mix. Also, we added subtitles on YouTube, so you can know for sure where to find vocals. The point was to make them recognizable only with intent.
Talk about the album art. It seems there is hidden symbolism there, is that true?
It’s some sort of a window that leads to four areas, which are the visualized soundscapes to each track. There were no particular symbols, but the thing is that they fill in the picture as it is set - like a hallucination, which is often a well of meaning where symbols change and multiply interpretations, at the same time being just momentary blobs of form.
The process of making this album cover involved many iterations of drawing, running through GAN networks, editing the result to achieve the effect of a captured hallucination, close to the exact one. When hardwiring symbols directly into it, they would be eaten up by hallucinating AI. So by randomly forming a resemblance of shapes, things started popping out where they fit the most contextually - weird stuff. It’s a common thing in art to throw “open for interpretation” on everything, but this one might be.
What is the concept behind each "hobo" symbol and track on 'Peregrination'?
So, the first one means being quiet and alert, seeing what’s going on. The second one is a sign of a trolley – hopping from one soundscape to another, time travel. The third one – safe camp; it may be confusing when applied to the lyrics, but the position that is stated there facing the object is some sort of a “safe camp”, ground to stand on. The fourth one means “don’t give up”, even if applied in both meanings of this phrase to track. But the symbol references may lack context without diving into tracks.
I'm sure our readers would be most happy if you were to illuminate the meaning of each of the songs on your new album.
Well, it’s like trying to create a soundtrack to some introductory ontological theories (pretty blank, sterile stuff), realizing their intensity. Here uneven-numbered tracks touch on mind ontology, even-numbered - on reality ontology. Not diving into details too much, let them hang there.
I. Electron
Peregrination by Bomg
it's no light of star it's a light of mind walking thru a dream electron shamanism
"Electron" is covering the theme of mythical perception akin to humans and the discovery that put a dent into these beliefs. Variation on a Tunguska story, mythos surrounding Tesla, how people mythologize all around.
II. Perpetuum
Peregrination by Bomg
Across desolations Caravans astray Sand covered roads Forget old ways
"Perpetuum" goes more into sci-fi territory: endless cycles of dead and born-again civilizations, the Great Filter caused by cosmic events or beings themselves, and how we just might unknowingly observe such things staring at the sky.
III. Paradigm
Peregrination by Bomg
Giant web built and set in lines It works when mind reflects Leaving us with all the fears Or letting them disappear
"Paradigm" is based around the tendency of the mind to confine itself into some set of ideas, building a higher fence while thinking it broadens the space. Thinking of one thing while it is the opposite, fear of the structure collapsing while an event like this would alleviate any sort of fear. But breaking a paradigm usually leads straight to the next one, to which the same attributes apply. And keeping this notion brings a safe distance to it.
IV. Emanation
Peregrination by Bomg
Now the opportunity is To see the universe spinning Emit structures boundless Round its' endless borders It's the very first the very last small moment In periods of endless time When the structure merge infinite To manifest as something
"Emanation" goes somewhat contrary to the second one - a reality that may be started at some point, complicates itself, and never is truly repetitive. Also thoughts on subjective existence and the point of it, maybe being an instrument of the Universe to explain it to itself. Speculation on whether or not consciousness flows from one state to another, as energy does, returning to its inception or scattering across until equilibrium, or even said results being the same thing. And the uncertainty of these things that are left to be answered while we as beings, it seems, are just left to fade away.

I read your review and listened to the album while getting ready this morning. Didn’t wake up for it, I’m done sacrificing my sleep for BTS, lol. I wasn’t expecting much because I knew it wasn’t for me, as I didn’t like Seven, 3D AND Too Much, lol basically none his collabs made it for me. Which, the album confirmed — both 3D and Seven are skips for me, I just can’t stand those songs.
That being said, I’m pleasantly surprised by some songs. I personally LOVE the sound of Standing Next To You, the 80s vibe! It’s a bit of deja vu as this trend has been going on for a while now but it’s right up my alley! Though I have to say it’s a tad bit too MJ-esque. I love MJ’s music, but it’s hard to make music inspired by him that isn’t too obviously inspired by him, if you know what I mean. But the sound suits my taste. That’s probably the song I’ll listen to the most. I could probably add Somebody and Shot Glass of Tears to my playlist as well. As for the rest, nothing special, maybe some songs will grow on me after some time?
The problem I have with the whole album is partly the sound — too generic, too mainstream pop, too much inspiration going all over the place, we’ve heard those songs over and over again, they’re well produced and catchy so it works but there’s not an ounce of novelty — partly the lyrics. I’m much more demanding for songs written in English (even though it’s not even my first language) than I am for songs in Korean. I’m not asking for poetry and deep meaning necessarily but it has to sound right, and in that department the album lacks a lot. For many tracks I noticed that, while I was warming up to the sound after a while, some lyrics just ended up toning down my enjoyment because they’re either way too basic or cringe (but I know I’m very picky when it comes to lyricism, I find so many songs so cringy, I’m probably just annoying) or they just don’t fit/sound right for me. I wouldn’t say it ruins the whole thing but I have to get myself accustomed and forced myself to not pay attention to it… For songs in Korean, I always read the translations and explanations about the songs but as my Korean is still pretty basic it doesn’t play a huge part when I listen to music in the language. I might become more demanding and hard to please as my level in the language increases (hopefully, I have to work hard).
Overall Golden is a bit better than I expected but not my cup of tea so while I’ve added a few songs to my playlist I probably won’t listen to the whole album a lot. Along with Layover, it’s the weakest in chapter 2 for me. But I’m impressed by Jungkook’s vocals, he really did challenge himself and worked on new techniques. I might not like the way he sings on several tracks but I can hear he worked hard on it. I love Jungkook so much, I feel a bad for being too harsh on him. And I appreciate his sincerity while talking about Golden, admitting that it was just not the right moment for a personal album, that he just went with the flow. I might not like the direction he took but at least he’s being honest about it. [How the fuck does it relate to his "golden moments" though? Hybe really just writes whatever for the album descriptions…]
Finally, about the MV… meh. Again, it’s nothing special? The outfit with the waistcoat is nice but not outstanding, it looks good on him, as for the rest? nope. That abandoned place in Hungary looks so impressive on pics but the MV doesn’t give it justice, they could have shot it in a studio using AI it wouldn’t have made a huge difference. The choreo, the photography — again, the 80s and MJ inspiration is a bit too much. Jungkook’s expressions are too exaggerated, it made me laugh lol sorry. He’s way hotter when he’s smiling and showing his goofy and cute sides rather than acting all tough. His Tik Tok challenges with LeSserafim and TXT were perfect in that sense, cute and sassy looks waaaay better on him, it makes him look so freaking attractive and powerful. The ‘mafia boss’ look suits Yoongi much better in my opinion. But I understand many fans like it on Jungkook, it’s how they want him to be. To each their own.
Overall the album is okay but nothing impressive, definitely some skips for me but I’m relieved there’s a few songs I really appreciate. I’m happy for Jungkook but I doubt this is an album we’ll remember in the future. I hope I’m not being rude. I wish people would also stop with the superlatives — breaking the industry, album of the year, mind blowing… everything is blown out of proportion, and coming from productors and people who collaborated on the album it’s just a marketing tactic for promotion but it’s getting annoying and it sounds fake. But I guess it’s fandom culture… Anyway, I’ll let it rest a few days to see if I change my mind and end up liking more songs. I’m happy Jungkook is satisfied, it’s nice seeing him happy.
Sorry this is way too long and I keep repeating myself!
Hi! Thank you so much for reading my review after listening to the album. That's really sweet!
I agree a lot on SNTY. I've heard the song a few times now. It's pretty catchy and powerful, but the MJ vocals at the end ruin the ending. It also ends really abruptly with an outro that sounds like a bridge. It's confusing when the song ends just like that. Many songs these days are like that. I think no song in Golden has a bridge? That's probably why I can never tell when the songs are about to end and stop paying attention halfway through.
Somebody is probably my favorite bside, Closer To You stands out because of the chorus, Shot Glass Full of Tears is growing on me, Hate You and Too Sad to Dance are pretty bland, I hate Yes or No, and Please Don't Change is meh and sounds too much like Closer to You. The issue with the album is structure and lack of cohesiveness. The song selection only makes sense after Please Don't Change. Why start with 3D and follow it up with Closer to You? SNTY makes sense after Closer to You, but after Seven? Seven after Closer to You? SNTY after Seven? And then Yes or No after SNTY instead of Seven? Why in the world... The songs also don't feel like Jungkook? I don't know if they will eventually, but I can't hear Jungkook in them. I can hear him in 3D and Seven. Hate You sounds like a song he would cover, but in general it's like they're not really him? SNTY sounds too much like The Weeknd too, especially the vocals, though JK is likely a better singer and sings really well in the song.
I don't even know the lyrics. It's hard to understand him tbh. He did a great job with his English pronunciation, but sometimes his accent is too noticeable. and I also keep spacing when listening to the songs. In SNTY there's a line that's like "left and right something" and makes no sense. And, yes, the songs have all been done before. Seven is by far the most refreshing and original to me actually.
Another issue with Golden is that the songs all feel really short and repetitive. I space out listening to them and before I know it they're over and I can't remember what the middle sounded like. I still can't remember how most of the songs end. I stop paying attention since they're so repetitive. 3D and Seven have bridges, but the other songs don't. Actually, Yes or No has a bridge, kinda, but it's not a good one and it's more like the pre-chorus. Jungkook's high note in that song sounds surprisingly bad. It's so thick and doesn't fit the song at all. So, yeah, most tracks sound unfinished.
Golden is neither worse nor better than what I expected. I think the issues with the album are Jungkook's lack of vision. As he explained, he didn't want to write the songs because he had nothing to say and doesn't love songwriting, so the lyrics are just lyrics, just images, not autobiographical, and apparently about love since it's universal. Thus the album has no message and the songs don't tell a story. He just wanted to try different genres and challenge himself, so the album sounds like a compilation of covers of different artists and less like a pop album. Jungkook's goals were to make a mainstream pop album and try many genres uncaring of messaging and refusing to settle on a specific sound... Imo the album was pretty much bound to feel unfinished and disorganized. It's almost mid by design.
Took the words right out of my mouth!! Yes, the waistcoat look is sexy and very Jungkook - it's kinda sassy and androgynous - but his other looks, particularly the sparkly jacket are crap (and look like Enhypen rejects). I couldn't really put into words what was missing with the MV but it's exactly what you said! They shot the MV at a historical place all the way in Hungary but you can barely tell? All I noticed was a normal stage. They literally could've shot it in a green room and added CGI and I wouldn't have noticed. The MV is also so dark and monotonous? The MJ inspiration is an over kill. The choreo is good, from what I saw, but the MJ grunting and choreo at the end are just frustrating... JK's facial expressions are too exaggerated, thank you for noticing! JK's sexy when he's dancing and naturally makes these powerful and sassy facial expressions, he's naturally sexy when he's not wearing makeup and just chilling, but he was trying too hard in the MV and looked baby more than anything. I think he looks cool in all his TikToks, but sassy JK with LSF is a different kind of attractive haha.
As far as records go, I'm sure Jungkook will set and break them, but the album's nothing special and does not match his talent. He wasn't even sure about releasing it. If Jungkook had had all the time in the world to make an album, would it have sounded like this or would it have been better structured and more personal?
Don't worry, your post isn't too long! Mine is just as long! Thanks for the ask!! I love it when anons share their thoughts in such detail! I'm glad you enjoy the album overall.

Reviews 367: The Visitor
A couple of years ago, Ai released II, which for me is one of the very best albums of space rock, psychedelia, and kosmische ever conceived…a sort of epic paean to all that is great about the tripped out planetarium sonics of both the early 70s and the early 90s. The album was put out by Hauch Records, an experimentally-minded label operating in the German underground that explores much else besides cosmic rock, including minimal drone, ambient, and dub amongst a range of other moods and styles. The label has a longstanding relationship with Ai, having also released the band’s self-titled LP in 2015. But even before that–back in 2011–Hauch released a record called Imitation of Nature from Ai’s keyboard shaman and synthesizer sorcerer Frank Bauer, who on his own explores imaginative worlds of modular magic as The Visitor. Earlier in 2020 and after an extended period of silence, Bauer and The Visitor returned with Installationen, a new LP+digital release on Hauch featuring music that accompanied an art exhibition in 2019, and that sees Bauer rigging his modular setup to play itself, which to paraphrase the liner notes, creates structures based on dualisms between repetition and evolution, and between composition and spontaneous generation. I’ll also mention here that for those who want more of these mystical modular incantations, Installationen was immediately preceded by a an EP called Instrumentals that contains four further pieces from the same sessions.
The Visitor - Installationen (Hauch, 2020) “Installation I” opens with twinkling bell tones drifting in a fog, while android idiophones vibrate through a cold cosmic wind. Liquid oscillations evoke UFO landings as they periodically swoosh upon the mix, and also serve to provide the track with the barest semblance of structure. Industrial scrapes transform into fractal shards as they travel radially outwards, and airy pulses of bass signal mysterious pauses. Distorted feedback fades into mist and snaps of synthetic air land amidst cascading layers of growing and overblowing ambiance…all as chemtrails soar through a cloudy winter sky. Machines purr and coo while gong mallets strike massive metal pipes, creating waves of subsonic wonderment. Ghostly vocalizations intermingle with animalistic growls while organic clouds of bass hum emerge then disperse. Computers flicker and pulse as they execute strange algorithms which cause glitching tracers that repeate at hyperspeed, and the music alternately evokes for me the work of Experimental Audio Research, and Natural Snow Buildings at their most cold and abstract. Then, as everything starts fading, the track airs out, with temple tones sitting beneath a hopeful wash of synthesis.
In “Installation II,” a randomized robot orchestra tunes to the dawn, as machine strings and modular horns swirl into a mysterious miasma. Shadowy tones and glowing strands of starlight intermingle as buzzing blankets of interstellar warmth meet glacial walls of shimmer and shine, with sinister bass synthetics evoking the shadowspells of Igor Wakhevitch. Billowing banks of laser light, silent screams of feedbacking static, and fluid flashes of molten crystal flow together before giving way to moments of sickly tonal meditation, as bass buzz and midrange hum move through chromatic slides and disturbing harmonic abstractions. Hovering clouds of reverb and delay shade in the empty spaces with spectral hues and obscuring layers of interstellar dust, pillowy pads drift over one another in a deep lullaby dance, and blinding rainbows are birthed from decaying plumes of smoke while elsewhere, thousands of viols scream and scratch into a wall of drone mesmerism. Sorrowful whale songs distort beyond comprehension as they diffuse through star oceans and slow motion oscillations are born of resonances and misaligned vibrato until the track devolves into a primitive loop, which is chopped even further by a locked groove.
In “Installation III,” percussive sequences and modular electronics evoke tropical jungle hand drum ceremonials and minimalist mallet cascades as a shaman casts spells of fourth world magic overhead. Swaths of static blow in like a psychedelic breeze, satellite broadcasts flow around muted computations, and cracks in the ground spew vapors of all possible color. Bassline shadowforms add a further sense of groove…these barely there thuds and pulses repurposed for a forest fusion jam out…while blips and pings create virtual tapestries of insect chatter and birdsong. Millions of modular marimbas are chopped and looped in real time, creating a mesmeric collage of futurist exotica, while elsewhere, swirling shimmers, mirage sonics, and sonar pings smear into cooling haze. It’s as if a hyperspeed conga line is working its way through an island rainforest paradise, wherein metalloid liquids drip from palm fronds into boiling pools of alien fluid, creating strange reverberations that diffuse in every direction.
The vinyl trip ends with “Installation IV” and a calming bath of buzz accented by twinkles and brass synthesis. Reversing wisps dance in the air, bell tones are stretched into infinitely tall vertical structures, and hypnotizing sparkles pan through wavering whooshes and subdued thumps. It’s a study in using constant motion to achieve sonic stasis, with every single element sparkling, swishing, and vibrating, yet somehow causing time to stand still. Healing tones of feedback grow in intensity before dispersing into glimmering bodies of glass, and the modular synths again evoke idiophones–this time mbiras playing some faintly heard paean to the shining sun. Piercing globules of light move backwards and forwards in temporal displacement and a serene storm of synthesis emerges…like an automaton orchestra activated by a slow and stately sunrise. Ascending phaser streaks and drunken bass synths execute a randomized dream dance while all around, clustered gemstones refract solar light into an infinite web of chiming magnificence. And just as the A-side terminates with a locked groove, so does the B-side, with washed out loops cycling peacefully and eternally.
The trip continues into the digital realm with three further tracks, the first of which is “Installation V.” Smoldering drones and feedbacking flute tones move through atonal harmonizations, while a slowly growing pulse of fevered ambiance enters the scene. Melody is mostly abandoned in favor of texture and resonance, as a malarial fog of silvery synthesis and smoke-shrouded distortion generates flashes of white light and voids of deep darkness. The vibe progressively turns more hopeful as the harmonizing layers ease their oppressive dissonance amidst the calming dances of sci-fi pixie dusk. And from here, the track begins to resemble a mystic sound ceremony, with modulars mimicking gongs, bowed cymbals, and Tibetan bowls while sea crystal pan-pipes are effected into radar bleeps…the whole thing like the Theatre of Eternal Music or Pelt transformed into a machine meditation. As for “Installation VI,” plink plonking and madcap Berlin schools sequences fire, with cut-off manipulations moving the sounds between starlight sparkles, percussive pops, and broken morse code transmissions. The sense of motion and energy is completely arresting in comparison to the preceding track’s sonorous serenity, especially as tick tocking twinkles of multi-colored diamond rotate in maddening patterns. Mysterious vocal tones hover in the background…like chopped and looped mermaid choirs…their gothic ocean arias pulsing at lightspeed and calling to mind Klaus Schulze’s earliest epics, as well as Popol Vuh’s soundtrack work. Indeed, the track almost resembles a Herzog-ian river trek at times, only as if proceeding in hypersonic stop motion, and with minimal melodic development interrupting the interlocking sequential stardance.
The final piece is “Installation VII,” which begins with howling winds and phase-shifting cymbal splashes. Subsuming drones of darkness sit beneath zipping lasers and rushes of white noise, while percussive electronics ping-pong back and forth…their tones evoking hand drums and rainforest mallet instruments. Subsonic slides give a lazed shape to the groove–as well as a feeling of portending doom–and liquid gurgles join hydraulic machines and their vented puffs of compressed air. Sprays of crystalline vapor are as harsh as they are transfixing, and resonant fog banks quiver while obscuring all sight as gaseous blasts of light spread towards some infinitely distant horizon. At times glowing clouds of tonal mesmerism enter…these golden washes of hovering feedback and oceanic vibration that intermingle with sonar synths and wobbling walls of mutating drone mysterium...and again, the modulars evoke the meditative tones of gongs and temple idiophones. Granular blasts of galactic sound arc across the spectrum, ghostly melodies emerge at times while giving off an oscillatory glow, and towards the end, shimmering clouds of sound flow in, churn in place, then mysteriously disappear.
