Brandon Sanderson's true calling is writing romance.
No no, I know he's supposedly bad at writing romance, but I ADORE how he writes women. 😂😭🔥 Oh my goodness I adore all his women. I adore how no two are the same. I adore how they feel like people. 🥰🥰
I love Shallan's horny desire and identity crisis. I adore how she's brave and also frightened of a lot of things, and it's not like her fear is mentioned in passing, Shallan is scared all the time. I love that her trauma is ADDRESSED! EXTENSIVELY! Cause in the name of making female characters bad ass, some stories give them trauma and then just never touch on it at all, or how this affects a lot of their decisions, leading to the absolute worst takes about those characters. 😭😭😭 I love Shallan's battle with her attraction to two different people and how that worsened her identity crisis as she tried to figure out who she was supposed to be and who she truly wanted to be. Of course, it's not a Shallan rant if I don't truly enjoy her art. 😌✨ And perhaps we only have Media Literate people in the Brandon Sanderson universe so there's no one mocking her passion like they do with Feyre.
I love Jasnah being a stiff possibly aroace stick-in-the-mud 💀. I love how she lectures as a teacher but also a mother with no interest in having actual children of her own. ❤️ I love how they don't just make her stiff but she's also got really strong platonic relationships that make her soft and anxious when she rests at night because she so terribly wants to use the intelligence she's been blessed with to protect the people she loves. 🥺 And Jasnah loves. And it is not romantic love. And her love is beautiful too.
I love Navani the huntress who bagged her man with the power of books of all things 😂 (reverse beauty and the beast). To be honest, I was unsure about Navani at first, but she's grown on me. She was really forward. 💀😌❤️ Also, I love how despite being a sort of secondary character, her trauma is not overlooked. She loves her children so dearly. 😔 I want Navani to stop losing things.
I love Lift, the lazy younger girl who cares more about satisfying her hunger even on a battlefield.😂 She could not care less about an assassin approaching her. She's the boss of everyone. She's about thirteen but she gives everyone orders. She tries to ignore the things that weigh heavy in her heart, after all, she's a child. A child with an awesome power. 😎 And a growing circle of friends.
I love Siri,🥹🥰 the strong-headed troublemaker who is reasonably scared of a lot of things but can't bring herself to follow rules that don't make sense.
I love Vivienna, who thought that she was very put together and politically savvy, lost in a world that frightens her, like a frog from the well viewing the deep blue sea. She so badly wants to do the right thing, but she's also lost and she wants to go home, and I relate to that so hard. 😭 Fortunately she's got a group of bandits who've sort of adopted her, so she's going to be okay. Though she might have to rewrite her black and white moral code. 😂
I love Jewel, the grumpy woman with no colours (who seems to still be clinging to the man she loved and lost 💔).
I love Blushweaver. 😂 Her shameless desire for power is hilarious, and I like how she's upfront about her desires for Lightsong, figuring manipulation would never work on him anyway. I like 'aggressive' women as they call it. A woman who will chase what she wants with zero humility. She's also very funny, intentionally. 😂❤️
I like Vin. I love that she's a girl who got taken from the streets but she loves balls and makeup and big beautiful dresses. 🥹❤️ No daydreaming about rags or suffering as if there's any joy to be had in poverty. 💀 I love that her power is a part of her and she shreds people as easily as paper. And she'll do it to protect the people she loves. I love that both the warrior in the dark and the lady in the ballroom are her, one and the same, and I love that Elend loves and accepts both parts of her. 😭 Vin has lost so many people that she has to hold on to Elend, holding tight with hands like daggers piercing his clothes but he holds her just the same and it burns! 😭😭
I love Evi. She was such a pathetic fragile creature, but I love Evi. I love how she would always ultimately be Dalinar's undoing. All she wanted to do was love and she spread love to everything she touched. And it was that love that broke Dalinar....so cleanly. (I wish there was more Evi fan art, she sounds so beautiful and wonderful and so dainty compared to Dalinar. I think of them as a Bull and a Dandelion. He would always lean close to gather her scent but one breath would blow her away to nothing and she'd be lost 💔😭)
I hate Illami or Illari or whatever they call her. That's the thing about excellent writing. Sometimes you got to write characters for people to hate. And oh I hate that woman. 😂 It's just a shame. Her intelligence would have meant so much to them.
I love Brandon Sanderson women. I love the ones I love. I love the ones I hate too. It's nice to have nasty women once in a while. Women should get to have nasty hobbies too. 😌✨

From that description alone I'm intrigued lol
So this isn't my usual post, I guess, but I know at least a few of my mutuals (@tildeathiwillwrite and @illarian-rambling, maybe a few more but I'm not sure) like the Stormlight Archive too, and so I feel morally obligated to recommend to you something I found:
It's hilarious read it it's Vasher, Szeth, and Vivenna arguing over who should have "child custody" over Nightblood, and it's absolute gold

i never draw her ever but this is vivienna!! she's changed alot since i first came up with her but its mostly because the story has changed,
slight venus of willendorf reference for the pose but also bcuz vivienna is a symbol of fertility,,, she's a sort of divine matron figure in the villiage she lives in, also she is de'amos's younger sister ! both of them grew up on a pedestal because of their bloodline, and its a struggle for her to maintain the appearance while she begins to question her beliefs.

warbreaker is like. yet another oppressed group being manipulated into rioting by war profiteers because war is the absolutely WORST thing ever. and like YES. they will lose. but they're like 'okay so they don't hate us but we still get mistreated anyway, so we should fight right?' and the princess is like 'NO. listen. one of us of their queen now. maybe they'll forget their prejudices if we just give it time....' jesus christ this is worst than the final empire. brando sando's deft take on systemtic oppression once again
#WHAT!!!!#WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT VIVIENNA!!!!!#talk about stopping the war sure but like???? WHAT! MAYBE THEY'LL FORGET IF WE JUST SIT HERE AND DO NOTHING??!!!#warbreaker lb

Tacky i NEED to hear more about your opinions on Andersen and his stories. Your post on the Snow Queen got me HOOKED
god forgive me for what i'm about to unleash <audhd
hc andersen has been pigeonholed into being a children-only author by english speakers because of poor translations and european attitudes towards fairy tales. if we're to understand the complexity of his stories, we need to understand a bit about hca as a man, because every single story he's written is autobiographical in some shape, way, or form. he cannot be removed from his stories, because his stories ARE him
hc andersen was born in the provincial danish town of odense in 1805, which lagged behind the "modern" world. it was a unique city because it retained the rural traditions and superstitions of the local folk while also serving as a gathering place for cosmopolitan nobles and rich merchants. this was crucial to hca's development bc he was exposed to one of the few theaters in all of denmark, was able to mingle with the upper classes, and was able to learn his folk roots through stories and practices
his father was a cobbler who harbored dreams of going to school, but never made it. his mother was an illiterate washerwoman, pious and superstitious. hca was a single child - very rare for the time! - and as a result his parents pampered him the best they could despite living in the slums. his father often read stories to him and created puppet theaters out of scrap, while his mother exposed him to folk traditions. there's so much more i could say about his parents, but needless to say his upbringing had such a huge impact on him that you can see them again and again as characters in his stories
andersen was not a typical child. he was dreamy, he was gawky and large, he wove flower garlands and sewed clothes for dolls instead of playing with other boys, and he harbored delusions of grandeur which were encouraged by his family, that he was destined for Greater Things. he was heavily bullied by all the other kids and from an early age on, he sought the company of middle and upper class families by performing (i.e. singing, putting on a show) for them. he IS the ugly duckling. i'm skipping a great deal of things, but long story short is, from an early age hca learned to perform for others in order to be seen as Special and Wanted. he left for copenhagen at the age of 14 to make his "debut" as an actor - despite knowing no one - and had to beg and perform his way into upper class homes once again to garner their pity and financial support
this couldn't have worked out for him in another time. when andersen arrived in copenhagen, the romantic movement was burgeoning. there was the belief that talent could be nurtured and grown if a student was Properly Civilized, and hca happened to be an excellent charity case. he eventually caught the eye of the collins family, who funded his schooling
there's so so many events i'm skipping over once again for the sake of brevity, but the long and short of it is that hca's success as an author - and his financial stability - depended on the collins' patronage for a very long time, to the point where he gained an obsession/crush on edvard collins, the man charged with helping andersen's career. i'm talking about "sending homoerotically charged letters to the guy when he's about to be married and being denied an invitation to said wedding bc the family's afraid you'll cause a scene and make an embarrassment, and also bc you wrote your first draft of the little mermaid based on your conversations with said guy" levels of crush.
as a queer, neurodivergent writer, andersen resonates with me so much. he's very much a writer for those on the outskirts of society. he expressed disapproval over the united states forcing native americans out of their territories and sympathized heavily with jews, at a time when religious tolerance wasn't high. he struggled with his attraction to men and women (he once wrote to edvard collins he desired to kiss him as if edvard were a woman and had an affair with a male dancer in his later years) and his own expression of masculinity, per the gender roles of 19th century europe. he frequently referred to himself as having a "feminine nature" - though this shouldn't be taken as him identifying as a woman (more on that later maybe?)
his stories are heavily christian in their message and symbolism, but you have to remember that this was the cultural language at the time. his relationship with faith can also be seen as his attempt to find faith in humanity - and he has SUCH a rocky relationship with faith throughout his lifetime. his stories are social commentaries as much as entertainment for children - and his later tales illustrate his more metaphorical, cynical side. just look at this chilling summary of "the most incredible thing":
this is commentary that stands true even to this day! holy shit!
hca is a fascinating author who, unfortunately, suffered gravely from poor translations and preconceived notions of what fairy tales are. when you read his stories, you have to read them understanding that 1) how andersen portrays his characters is often reflective of his OWN childhood experiences and 2) what andersen writes is an excising of his internal struggles and questions - questions of faith, of his sexuality, of his views on society, of feeling like an outsider who must always perform up until the very end of his life. his struggles are human - and that's why his stories have such power even to this day
all in all:
(from wullschlager's intro to nunnally's translation:)

if you want to read more about hca, i highly recommend the following books:
biographies
hans christian andersen: european witness - paul binding
hans christian andersen: the life of a storyteller - jackie wullschlager
hans christian andersen: a new life - jen andersen

I am not going to respond to the specific post, because it was otherwise making valid points about the way reduced production timelines in modern hollywood impacts costume design (it impacts all pre and post production, this is also why CGI seems to be getting worse, but camera work and stunt work doesn't, the actual filming process isn't super impacted but all the prep and the post-filming work are), but I just saw someone cite Cruela as evidence that the quality of film costumes has gone down
fucking cruela

this cruela.
(the petals on that skirt are hand sewn. there are more than 5,000 of them. the leather jacket was made by hand from scratch for the movie because jenny beavan couldn't find a jacket that matched her incredibly specific requirements. the epaulettes alone are tiny works of art. the outfit is on screen for a couple of minutes at most as part of a montage. she did not have to go that hard for a montage, but god i'm glad she did)
i'm all for talking about how condensed timescales and pressure from shareholders can result in costume designers and creators to not have the time and budget they need to make good costumes. i too think rings of power and the witcher both look like shit.
but fucking cruela?!
(yes that is all one garment which emma stone is really wearing. the train is 40 foot long.)
it's not the stupidest take i've seen on film costumes this year, but only because there are still people loudly insisting black panther 2 didn't deserve its best costume oscar because the costumes were all cgi. (none of the costumes were cgi).
i kinda thought the best costume oscar, vogue spread, display of the costumes at the new york fashion institute, and 47 handmade costumes for the main character alone spoke for themselves, but no, apparently these costumes are bad because they're not sparkly enough...
#quick someone buy vivienna westwood a bedazzler#seriously though#the post was trying to make a valid point#but the examples they cited were all insane#amazon's cinderella and ever after are not comparible films#they're trying to do completely different things!#and the glen close dalmatians movies are a lot of fun#but you cannot tell me with a straight face they have better costume design than cruela#at least lotr and rings of power are trying to depict the same world#even if comparison *anything* to lotr is just unfair#that movie was a once in a century miracle of a production#it's not just than nothing has gone that hard since#almost nothing had gone that hard before either#rings of power has really shit costumes#but expecting it to be as good as lotr is not fair

Adrenaline coursed through her when he sped off to the side of the road and all she could see was the way the trees towered over the car and the excitement on his face. Once they were stopped, her eyes grew wide. She had to admit, she didn't think he'd actually do it. "Or what?" A smirk tugged at her lips, intent on provoking him further, seeing what would come of her disobedience.
Still, she slowly got out of the car, lazily hanging against the door as though she wasn't going to turn around for him. "I think I'm perfectly content where I'm standing, thank you." With a wink, her hand dipped back beneath her pants, fingers teasing herself once more. "I told you, you didn't have to s-stop," the last word leaving her lips in a breathless gasp.
With every pant, every breath, he couldn't take it any longer. The man glanced into the rearview mirror, ensuring no one was directly behind him before sharply veering to the side of the road. The vast expanse of trees stretched endlessly ahead, but the landscape held no significance to him in that moment.
With a swift motion, he threw open his door and stepped out, his boots hitting the ground with purpose. Without hesitation, he rounded the car, opening her door with a firm motion. "Get out," he commanded, his voice low and gravelly, despite the rawness of his tone, he extended a hand, offering it to her as a silent invitation for her to take, "And turn around."

Warbreaker as a Story About Growing Up
I recently (within the last several months) read Warbreaker for the second time, and it struck me that through each of the main storylines (Siri, Vivinna, and Lightsong) there is a prevailing theme of maturing and taking responsibility. This theme manifests itself in different ways according to the different characters, but it can be found in all three of the plot lines. Allow me to explain.
Let’s start with the most obvious, Siri. You can pull more than one theme from Siri’s story, but I want to focus on “putting away childish things.” When we first meet Siri, she takes pleasure in being “unimportant” and the lack of responsibility that comes with it. While her siblings study and prepare for their duties, she spends her time exploring on her own and bringing colorful flowers to the children of her city (which is not encouraged by her religion). Mab the kitchen mistress calls her out for skipping her tutoring and “shirking responsibilities.” Because of this carefree attitude, when Siri is thrust into her role as the god king’s wife she is completely unprepared and forced to mature quickly. Throughout her time in the palace of Hallandren she learns responsibility and control. By gaining control over herself (example: controlling her hair while talking to the god king’s priest) she is also able to gain some control over her situation, which can be seen as she takes charge and uses her position in the palace as “vessel” to her advantage. By the end of the story she has matured quite a bit, which can most obviously seen in the control she gains over her hair color. Despite these changes she never loses her joy and wonder. Good thing, too, as Suesebron says it is one of the reasons he likes her.
Now for Vivenna. Vivienna is set up to be the complete opposite of Siri. She studies diligently, maintains complete control over her composure, and puts her duty above all else. Her father thinks of her as “composed, simple [modest], hard, and capable.” The perfect Idrian and the perfect daughter. Vivenna seems to think highly of herself as well, saying that if she had been sent to the god king she could have stopped the coming war. Vivenna’s character arc is about realizing that she doesn't know as much as she thought she did. Through the course the story she is completely humbled, and her worldview and understanding are challenged. In order for her to mature she must first realize just how immature she was in many ways. Vasher points this out when he comments on how “stupid” she was to be manipulated by Denth. But Vivenna does learn, and she does grow in maturity and wisdom to the point where she is able to free Vasher from Denth. When at the end of the story she chooses to go with Vasher it is with a new understanding of herself and the world. She knows that she can’t go back to what she was before. She has been changed too much. With her newfound maturity she chooses what path she will take, without having others plan her life for her. Interestingly, her maturity manifests itself in a way that could be considered immature as she learns to lighten up. Specifically I’m referring to when she called Vasher “wartlover the ugly” as they set off together (as out of place as this line may seem it does demonstrate her character development well). When she rejects the propriety expected of her as a princess, in a way she is rejecting the old, naive self that lived a sheltered life in the castle taught to hate the Hallandrens. She is more world-wise now and has grown into her own person.
Lastly, we have Lightsong. I thought about calling this post "Warbreaker as a coming of age story" but Lightsong never comes of age. He is a fully fledged god, after all. Still, his story begins in a similar place as Siri's. Lightsong treats his role in the government and religion of Hallandren flippantly, and says that the other gods do the same. The only duty he takes seriously is his reviewing of artwork, and even that he is tempted to brush off on occasion. His journey to maturity kicks off with his obsession of who he was in his previous life. Interestingly, "finding my identity" is a common theme in many coming of age stories. The other driver in Lightsong's story is, of course, Blushweaver. She encourages Lightsong to step up as a ruler and religious figure of Hallandren (although she does so to gain power in the court). Slowly, influenced by his troubling dreams and the memory of someone important to him, Lightsong begins to take more responsibility to the point where he takes sole control of a large portion of the lifeless army. Even so he continues to treat much of his new involvement like a game, as can be seen by his brash attack of the Phan Khal in the tunnels. The danger finally becomes real to him when Blushweaver is killed. In the end, though, Lightsong is able to accept his role as a god and give his life for Susebron, something he previously had said he would never do.
If Siri, Vivinna, and Lightsong’s stories are about taking responsibility, then one possible interpretation of Denth’s story is giving it up. Denth’s motives are never really explained by the story, but Vasher accuses him of simply selling his sword to whoever will pay. Denth does have his own goals - killing Vasher being the main one. It is also possible that Denth wanted a war between Idris and Hallandren, but he never says as much and there are no reasons given as to why it would be advantageous for him. With the information we are given, Denth can be read as using his position as a mercenary as a way of having someone else to blame. He does not decide what his employers want him to do - he simply does it. (Honestly, upon further reflection this isn't an interpretation I'm 100% sold on, but it fits the theme of this post so I thought I'd mention it.)
Returning to Susebron, with all this growing up and maturing that happens throughout the book, I would have liked to see Suesbron mature a bit more as well. By the end of the story he still seems a bit too childlike to me. Ah well. That’s another topic for another time.
P.S. I was going to cite all the chapters I reference here, but I only have the pdf download from Brandon’s website which isn’t the best for looking things up. I guess you’ll just have to trust I’m not making this all up lol
