Architetti Stefano Boeri, Bosco Verticale, Mailand,…

I don’t know if it still holds true that the designer Marcel Breuer overshadows the architect Marcel Breuer but the present catalogue was a decided and in my opinion successful attempt at changing it: „Marcel Breuer - Design und Architektur“, published in conjunction with the eponymous exhibition at Vitra Design Museum in 2003. While it doesn’t fail to deliver a concise overview of Breuer’s undoubtedly important contribution to modern design and the use of tubular steel in particular it also thoroughly features his architectural achievements: several essays elaborate Breuer‘s even richer architectural career from his early theoretical works at the Bauhaus over his mid-century houses in the States to his late global work characterized by crystalline prefab Brutalism. In reading these very worthwhile texts one realizes what an incredible œuvre Breuer and his associates left and that it is in no way inferior to his probably more popular design work. The interspersed recollections by I.M. Pei and Robert Gatje also bring to life the person and boss Marcel Breuer, an apparently whitty and sociable character. So if you’re looking for a book to cover the whole Breuer this catalogue is a big recommendation!

Sometimes it just takes a (long) while for me to finally buy a certain book and in this case I should have done it earlier: „George Nelson - Architekt, Autor, Designer, Lehrer“, published in 2008 by Vitra Design Museum in conjunction with a major retrospective bearing the same title. George Nelson (1908-86) probably doesn’t require many introductory words as one of America’s major postwar designers whose (or one of his associates’) designs for Herman Miller are legendary. What’s lesser known is the fact that Nelson, a trained architect, also designed (or had his associate Gordon Chadwick design) a number of interesting houses on Long Island (and in general was an eloquent advocate of modern living). While his architectural works make up only a small part of the catalogue the major part of it is dedicated to his manifold design works: furniture, accessories and graphic design all were a part of the Nelson design office’s holistic approach and receive individual analyses that make the catalogue a very handy yet very comprehensive companion to the long and multifaceted career of George Nelson. In addition to catalogue also contains a concise work catalogue that identifies the actual author responsible for the many designs coming out of Nelson’s office. The latter is meritorious feature that finally clarifies authorships in a multidisciplinary design office and makes the present catalogue an important read on one of America’s most significant designers.

Christine von Raven @ Vitra Design Museum Talk
Im Rahmen der Ausstellung Transform! Designing the Future of Energy veranstaltet das Vitra Design Museum am 27.

Vitra Design Museum | Transform! Designing the Future of Energy | Energy Shapes the City | Bauhaus Earth + Transsolar Klimaengineering + Urban Catalyst | 23.3.2024–1.9.2024
Transforming our cities into sustainable energy hubs is a complex but inevitable process. Renewable energy is the key to mitigating climate change, but it requires much more space and new infrastructure in the existing city. A look at the Dreispitz district of Basel shows a possible solution in a three-step approach: saving, networking, renewing, which promises to guarantee quality of life and sustainable spaces in times of change.
Bauhaus Earth, Transsolar Klimaengineering and Urban Catalyst have worked together to develop this concrete example of climate-friendly urban development.
