Music May 2023 #11: lynch. - DEVIL release: April 2014 genre: J-rock, visual kei, visual rock, nagoya kei

And now for something distinctly different! Or not really all that different, since I've talked about lynch. before, but I know it's been ... awhile. So what better time than for Throwback?

Excuse me while I have a moment here - the band was on its tenth year when this song came out ... almost ten years ago. Okay, nine years, not really the point. No wonder Reo's finally started showing his age a bit. And I know I've written about lynch before, but apparently that was mostly in the pre-pandemic times of me having a very under-developed tagging system, so... But if you're new here, lynch is one of the core bands of the Nagoya kei subset of visual kei, with "DEVIL" being a pretty good example of their core sound: heavy bass and drum, overdriven guitar, and raucous vocals, both in sung and growled intervals. DEVIL goes hard from start to finish, so if you're the sort of person who has a hard time resisting a good headbanging tune, make sure to warm up first! And while the lyrics sound raucous and maybe a bit dastardly, the message is quite positive: self-doubt is the "devil" saying no to things you could totally do with the right work effort.

Aesthetics in Nagoya kei tend (tended? There's some argument in the VK fandom that Nagoya kei "ended" some years ago, but that conversation usually involves a certain amount of butthurt accusations of selling out, so I'm a bit leery of listening to that claim) towards monochrome, blacks and metals and industrial spaces, and in that aspect, DEVIL is again a great example as it flashes between the band performing the track (in two different spaces, one a bare soundstage, the other what looks like a cave made from wooden shipping pallets), a pair of what might be MMA fighters in combat, and splashes of a white liquid that might be milk, might be paint ... and definitely is meant to stand in for blood, perhaps in a way that's less disruptive to the near-monochrome of the overall video. Which again matches well to a song about fighting through the doubt to do the thing(s) one wants to do.

GALLOWS (off which this is the title) goes in and out of streaming availability depending on how King is feeling towards its licensing this month, but if you want to buy physical copies, it should still be in print or if you're lucky enough, you might find it in the secondary market. And if this is your style, lynch has plenty more to offer.
