There are not enough examples of Black women in gothic works or Black women in ballet, so here’s a wonderful example of the intersection of those two things. Creole Giselle is a adaption of the classic (and gothic) ballet Giselle, in which most everything is the same except the ballet is set in Louisiana circa 1840 with an all black cast. Here is Giselle’s famous madness scene performed by the breathtaking Virginia Johnson.

~ @danceinstituteofwa Happy Women’s HER-Story Month! This week DIW highlights the contributions of Virginia Johnson, trailblazing ballet dancer, choreographer, and journalist. A founding member of Dance Theatre of Harlem, Virginia Johnson danced as a Principal over a nearly 30-year career. She is universally recognized as one of the great ballerinas of her generation, best known for performances in Giselle, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Fall River Legend. After retiring from DTH in 1997, Ms. Johnson founded Pointe Magazine. She served as its editor-in-chief for 10 years. A Washington, D.C. native, Ms. Johnson began her training with Therrell Smith. She studied with Mary Day at the Washington School of Ballet and graduated from its Academy, landing a scholarship at the School of the Arts at New York University, before joining Dance Theater of Harlem. #womenhistorymonth #DIW #womenherstorymonth #highlighta #virginiajohnson (at Dance Theatre of Harlem) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMN-f5JBPOZ/?igshid=1m8laxqbdwbqa

Virginia Johnson as Giselle, dancing the mad scene in Dance Theatre of Harlem's Creole Giselle, filmed for television in 1987.
#she is so expressive!#the whole cast is#i don't usually feel so viscerally anxious for giselle in this scene but i was so worried about her here#the way she fails to do the steps#also it's funny how in filmed productions you can see all the little details#like how when her mother takes out her hair clips while she's fussing over her so her hair will be down for the next part#i need to find a video of the whole performance now#virginia johnson#eddie shellman#creole giselle#giselle#dance theater of harlem#ballet#dancers#Youtube

Dance Theatre of Harlem “We knew we were pioneers. We were crossing the prairie in a Conestoga wagon, and the Indians were attacking, and we had to band together and make this happen. There was a lot of purpose.” - Virginia Johnson, former Principal Dancer, now Artistic Director of ‘Dance Theatre of Harlem’. Throughout its 50-year history ‘Dance Theatre of Harlem' has stood for more than just dancing. It was born out of a tragedy. After the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968 Arthur Mitchell the first African-American principal dancer at ‘New York City Ballet’ decided that a change needed to be made. In his life and the world. With ballet teacher Karel Shook, he formed ‘Dance Theatre of Harlem’ in 1969. Together, they wanted to prove to the world something that still needed proving back then: that blacks could indeed dance ballet - and marvellously. The beginnings were humble; dancers took class in a converted garage. But as the years went by ‘Dance Theatre’ - performing an array of ballets by George Balanchine and later adding works like John Taras’s “The Firebird" and “Creole Giselle” to the mix - grew and toured the world. By 2004 the company, burdened by debt was forced to go on hiatus. To the dismay of many that pause lasted eight years. When the company started up again in 2012 with Virginia Johnson at the artistic helm ‘Dance Theatre’ has been reduced to 18 dancers - from 44. The legacy of ‘Dance Theatre’ persists and continues to improve. In the ballet world dancers of colour remain underrepresented. Mitchell sadly passed away in September 2019, his work remains. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #ballet #blackballet #revdrmartinlutherkingjr #newyorkcityballet #tones #neoclassical #angular #teaching #karelshook #arthurmitchel #dancetheatreofharlem (at Dance Theatre of Harlem) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEq3J1YFq1O/?igshid=1bp5gecu522h
