Whats the first thing youre doing in the new year?
Watching the New year's day concert by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on BBC Two. Or did you mean something else? At least that's what I am doing right now.

In August 1922 the Vienna Philharmonic gave a guest performance at the Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires, under the direction of Felix Weingartner.
This rare original program from August 19, 1922 shows the evening's works.
This guest performance by the Wiener Philharmoniker was the highlight of the concert season.

Songs For New Year's Day
That’s my approach – I think they’re pointless, but whatever floats your boat, I guess. Yesterday I promised you a second set of tunes to mark the New Year, and here they are. As before, these are all songs that I have played before, which have become a regular part of my New Year music, so I reiterate yesterday’s apology for repetition. But they are all great, so why not? I’ve led with this…

A rec for New Year's Day: The Wiener Philharmoniker's New Year's Day Concert
This event's history is not uncomplicated, but I honestly think that we can forgive it. Unlike most Austrian institutions, the Vienna Philharmonic has made a genuine effort to come to terms with the events of 1938-1945 — and in any case this is always a really fun occasion! For many years now, PBS has broadcast it on tape-delay on the evening of January 1st, with the addition of dancers from the Vienna Ballet and a celebrity host (originally Walter Cronkite, later Julie Andrews, and for the past several years Hugh Bonneville).
The repertoire is always quite unchallenging: mostly by the Strauss family, with occasionally some Mozart, Haydn, or Schubert thrown in for variety. This year, though, there's an added highlight. For the first time in history, the program will feature a work composed by a woman, Constanze Geiger (1835-1890). Chicago's very own ... well, yeah — Chicago's very own Riccardo Muti will conduct!
In the United States at least, you can watch it here.

Music from Bohemia
Music from Bohemia traces its roots back to the Middle Ages in the monasteries of the Bohemian Forests where Gregorian chant and religious music were performed for centuries. With the arrival of the Reformation, secular music began to take hold and during the 17th Century Bohemian composers stepped up to the forefront. After the transition into the Romantic era, nationalism emerged as a potent…
