Born in Spain, Victoria 'Vicky' Manzano García was once a young student who took part in an exchange program of her university. She spent some months studying in a university of California, where she coincidentally met one of the most important people in her life: the young Rebecca Carlton. After hanging out together and enjoying each other's company for some time, they realized they had bonded beyond friendship and started to date.
Vicky and Becky kept a long distance relationship after Victoria had to go back to Spain, and they had it very clear that they wanted to start a life together in the future. After graduating and getting enough resources, they moved to New York and started a family, eventually adopting three children, Luna, Jonathan and James.
Victoria's ideal job from her teenage years had been becoming a police officer, having an ideolized version of them and wanting to help the common citizen. When she achieved a place in the New York Police Department, it turned out to be... far more flawed than she had expected. Let's just say she lost count of how many cases of corruption she has heard about through the years.
She has at least made friends with those who refuse to tolerate those cases no matter if they are 'in the same side', officers Stryker and Pedro, as much as many of their reports had been ignored and they are seen with bad eyes by many of their 'colleagues' for that. They have little to no doubt they would have resigned years ago if they didn't believe that at least there they can help stop dangers such as smalls fractions of the Black Dragon syndicate.
Speaking of which, the presence of such dangerous criminals around the city has forced the police officers, including Vicky, to take part in special trainings to make sure they are prepare to fight them. She has even asked her brother-in-law, Johnny, to teach her some martial arts moves in case she could need it. Sometimes it's really difficult being involved in such dangers, especially knowing she has a family she has to look up for.
Unfortunately for Vicky and her friends, as well as all of Earthrealm, they will have to face even greater dangers than they could ever have imagined thanks to the ambitions of a certain Emperor from another world.

Vicki’s father James was at first an elitist snob who Vicki couldn’t stand
Lisa is named after a girl I went to school with who was a complete bitch
Vicki of course comes from Victoria “Posh Spice” Addams who I hardcore shipped with Brian when I was little, note their last names also being similar.
Incidentally Emily was loosely inspired by Emma “Baby Spice” Bunton
I gave Kevin, Howie, AJ, and Nick a case of SORAS (Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome) to roughly the same as Brian so the high school plotline and the boys’ birth years made sense without being weird (IRL Nick would’ve been 12 and AJ would’ve been 13/14 if Neilson and Adam were to actually exist)
The boys’ names were supposed to be temporary placeholders so I could remember who’s kid belonged to whom until I could think of new ones…that didn’t happen
The boys’ middle names were inspired by my love of horror movies,
Bradley (Jason Voorhees; Friday the 13th)
Neilson (Freddy Krueger; Nightmare on Elm Street)
Kyle (Michael Myers; Halloween)
Harry (Dracula)
Adam’s middle name was originally Jackson as I believed that the killer of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Leatherface’s, real name was Jack (John), turns out it’s Thomas Hewitt, therefore Adam has no ties to any kind of scary movie, which I guess is okay considering he’s scary enough as a person
As far as I know the name “Neilson” IS real I only came up with it because I couldn’t think of another boys’ name that started with an N, completely forgetting the name Nathan existed
Natalie’s last name comes from a guy I was friends with in high school
Mr. Wexler was also the name of the school’s principal in the show “Even Stevens” let’s just say I decided to borrow it
Coach Reinhart’s name comes from my childhood best friend’s maternal grandfather, affectionately known as “Poppy Reinhart”
Forever Your Girl, Pomp & Circumstance, and The Winchester Saga went through NUMEROUS rewrites before their final versions were released
Harry is an amalgamation of Carlton from Fresh Prince, Fez from That 70’s Show, and Steve Urkel from Family Matters
The Winchester Saga has lead to some confusion with people thinking it has something to do with the TV show Supernatural, it doesn’t I was just trying to think of an elite, powerful, snooty sounding last name. I DID create characters named Sam and Dean as a fun Easter egg but they don’t hunt the supernatural, just criminals
The characters Rachel, Chandler, and Joey were NOT done on purpose, I didn’t realize I did it until much later and yes, Friends IS one of my favorite shows
Incase you didn’t know, Bradley and Neilson are best friends (yes I’m aware of how much I have them refer to each other as such) their relationship is modeled after Brian and Nick’s during the early days of BSB when they were super close
Bradley, Neilson, and Natalie’s friendship was inspired by Shawn, Corey, and Topanga on Boy Meets World
Kevin’s departure from BSB is included in the series with it being mentioned that he’s either in Boston or New York working on movies
Brian’s Christian, good boy persona made me want to make Bradley a snarky, sarcastic, rebellious metalhead
Neilson is just Nick during his Now or Never era
Mr. Mooney is a faceless character, meaning he’s only mentioned in passing and never actually makes appearances
“Backstreet Manor” as it’s called is big enough to include (at least) 10 bedrooms, an in-home recording studio, a game room, Harry’s lab, and an in-ground pool
While Natalie has a friendly relationship with Kyle and Harry, and is best friends with Bradley, she and Adam have an acrimonious relationship
Bradley’s car “Christine” a 2008 Ford Mustang convertible gets it’s name from the Stephen King novel of the same name
Day 4: Shanghai: Yu Garden, Shanghai Tower, Propaganda Poster Art
Happy 32nd anniversary to us! We were met by our lovely private guide Vicky from the Shanghai Xuanle Travel Service Co. A native of Shanghai and guide for +25 years, she spoke perfect English and was very knowledgable in the culture, history, geography and customs of her country.
Yu Gardens was first on the days agenda…..tucked away in the Old City, is the most lovely of parks really. Composed of six scenic areas, luscious landscaping, rocky “mountains”, and serene ponds lined by Bonsai and willow trees are punctuated by Classical Chinese architecture. Pagodas with their wing tipped rooflines, animal carvings and rows of hanging lanterns with red tassels offered shaded views to the Ming Dynasty and today, to us.
Shanghai is nothing if not a contrast in old and new. The Shanghai tower, a marvel of modern architecture is the second tallest building in the world boasting 128 Stories. It is serviced by more than 100 Japanese made elevators ascending at 40mph! As is our luck, there was no line and we quickly made the 119th floor observation deck. An expansive view of the river and entire city awaited mesmerizing me by the languid flow of barges along the Huangou river. A quick note here on the air quality/smog: it’s real ! My breathing wasn't effected, but it definitely limits the view.
At the base of the tower we visited a Nio electric car showroom. Wade tried out the VR glasses and cell phones which went with the cars and marveled at the autos sleek lines and clever details. Although not available in the US, we were impressed with the variety of models, styling and quality.
Dim sum and tea for lunch today…..the spring rolls and bok choy were our “preferred” dishes…..not so much the other choices.
Back to the old at our last stop for the day, the Propaganda Poster Art Center, a privately owned museum explaining Red China by the mass-produced propaganda posters issued in the 1960s and 70s, when China suffered the Cultural Revolution. Some 5,000 hilarious and fascinating posters are laid out chronologically offering an artistic historical commentary. The US is often depicted as an ugly greedy villain being overcome by strong, attractive and victorious Chinese figures. The elderly founder/owner of the museum told us stories of the history surrounding some of the posters - fascinating!
Our planned anniversary dinner did not disappoint: Flair restaurant on the 58th floor of the Ritz Carlton at a window table overlooking the night downtown skyline of Shanghai. A definite WOW!! We marveled at the animated light show off the skyscrapers along the river while sipping champagne, and enjoying sushi and chocolate deserts with coconut ice.
Tourist Note: All the city lights went off promptly at 10pm (apparently a cost/energy saving regulation)
“And then, of course, there’s Lord Stapleton,” Marcia Prescott, Victoria’s aunt, said excitedly.
“Carlton?” Victoria asked with a giggle. “I’m not sure I could live with that, dear.”
“Why?” Marcia asked. “He’s young, handsome and exceedingly rich.”
“And between his drinking and his womanizing, I have no doubt that he’ll end up dead of either cirrhosis or venereal disease,” Victoria said.
“Vicky!” Thomas said, containing a smile.
“Well, it’s true and you know it, uncle,” Victoria replied with a grin. “I’m afraid he’s a definite no.”
“No one’s going to be perfect, Victoria,” Marcia said, a bit annoyed. “At least no one that’s rich enough to save Chartwell. Your standards are simply too high. Beggars cannot be choosers, dear – don’t forget that.”
“Personally, I think we should revisit Herbert Armstrong,” Thomas said. “You two were always so close when you were younger, and friendship is an excellent basis upon which to build a marriage.”
“I told you, uncle, Herbie isn’t an option,” Victoria said.
“But why, my dear?” Thomas asked.
“Because once again, she’s simply too good for him,” Marcia said. “I think your niece needs to better understand her position, Tom. Simply because she holds the title of Marchioness, she seems to think she’s better than half the men in Corwyn.”
“It’s not that at all,” Victoria protested.
“Then why?” Thomas asked. “Herbert is a fine young man.”
“Yes he is, and he’ll be a wonderful husband … to another fine young man,” Victoria said, pausing to let the comment sink in.
“Oh dear god,” Thomas said. “All right then, Herbert’s out, too. Who does that leave us with?”
“Michael Sinclair, the Earl of Whitcomb,” Marcia said.
Victoria grimaced.
“Now what, may I ask, is wrong with Lord Whitcomb? Marcia asked. “I swear, Victoria, you won’t be satisfied with anyone less than King Henry!”
“Now there’s a thought,” Thomas said.
“Oh, please, Tom,” Marcia said, rolling her eyes. “I was only joking.”
“Why?” he replied. “Victoria is a lovely young woman with a sterling reputation and impeccable breeding. She’s also a senior peer of the realm. Our dear king could do much worse, if you ask me!”
“Oh, please, uncle,” Victoria groaned. “You know as well as I do how remote that possibility is.”
“I understand that, dear, but, of course, we’ll know soon enough,” Thomas replied. “Don’t forget, you’re being presented to the king on Tuesday for your formal investiture as Marquess of Lansdowne. He hasn’t seen you in years, and I must say you have blossomed into a lovely young woman. So would it hurt to go to a little extra effort to make everything goes perfectly on Tuesday?”
“Perhaps not, but after this discussion, I must say the dower house is looking better and better,” Victoria said.
“Now don’t give up, dear,” Thomas said. “Marriage is still an excellent solution to all your problems.”
“That may be so,” Victoria replied. “But for now, I think I shall have to leave it to fate.”

If the walls of this Carlton house could talk, who knows where they’d begin! The 1860s property has certainly seen its fair share of history, starting with the first intercolonial handball competition being played here in 1873. The handball court was later converted into a brick factory, before architect John Mockridge turned it into his own residence in 1970. More recently the home has been featured on television shows, including The Slap and Halifax f.p.
The current owners Vicki and Ross purchased this home 12 years ago, at which point it hadn’t been touched since 1974. The couple were drawn to the history of the building and its perfectly preserved feel. ‘It has such a specific design about it – cork ceiling and a mezzanine in that very ‘70s style,’ is how Vicki describes the space.
Some renovations designed by architect and historian Allan Willingham have since been made to the property ‘It’s such a relic of that era – we were conscious of not interfering with it too much. We felt like custodians of this historic building,’ says Vicki. The main changes were increasing the size of the kitchen, converting the third level of the building (later added by John Mockridge as his studio) into the main bedroom suite, and turning an outside toilet into a 1050 bottle wine cellar. Vicki is a picture framer, and has relished the opportunity to cover the walls with art in the same manner John Mockridge once did.
One of Vicki’s favourite features of the property is the private, north-facing courtyard, which is exceptionally large for an inner-city property. The orientation of the space sees plants thrive year-round, and markings from the original handball court can still be seen on the walls. The location is also wonderful, being positioned on Macarthur Square and with views of the city skyline.
After 12 years living here, Vicki and Ross have decided to downsize to a nearby property and have placed this home on the market. If you’re looking for an inner-city three-bedroom, two-bathroom home with endless character, now is the time!
See the full listing for 22 Macarthur Place North, Carlton here . The home is being sold by Peter Stephens and Isabelle McEwan Marion at Nelson Alexander via auction on Saturday June 27 at noon.
