'With Doctor Who's first anniversary special The Star Beast out now, fans are delving into the wealth of behind-the-scenes content - including some in-vision commentary from David Tennant himself.

The actor, who has returned to play the Fourteenth Doctor alongside Catherine Tate's Donna Noble, sat down with producers Phil Collinson and Vicki Delow to share on-screen commentary for The Star Beast.

During the special, The Meep, voiced by Miriam Margoyles, reveals itself to be a villain despite its adorable appearance and, during one cryptic moment, refers to "the boss".

While fans are in the dark about who that could actually refer to, some assumed it would be Neil Patrick Harris' Toymaker, who's set to appear in the third special, The Giggle - but a remark from Tennant has caused fans to wonder whether it's actually a villain set to face Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor.

Commenting on that moment, Tennant asked Collinson and Delow: "Do you now know what this means?" to which both responded: "Yes."

Tennant admitted: "I don't, still cryptic to me."

Delow pointed out: "You'll get to find out with all the viewers."

Tennant's confusion appears to suggest that the Meep's boss won't be revealed in the 60th anniversary specials and that, actually, that moment is part of a long game, setting up a character to be revealed in season 14, the first of Ncuti Gatwa's seasons.

The Star Beast, which has become the biggest drama launch of 2023, marked the beginning of three anniversary specials.

The second, titled Wild Blue Yonder, has been kept under wraps but fans were treated to an enigmatic trailer at the end of The Star Beast - and it all looks a little terrifying.'

Hello!! Thanks for such a fun question, @just-a-itty-bitty-kitty and I talked it over so first, big thanks to Kitty for all their help!!!! We have explanations for the names we chose not only for all the voices but the vessels too! (I also took the opportunity to touch up my old human voice designs!!)

First batch:

Hero -> Robin : This was one the simplest to come up with but I really like it! I love robin based designs for Heros, and this name invokes Robin Hood and Christopher Robin vibes which I really like! :)

Base Princess -> Sarah : Literally means "Princess", it's perfect.

Broken -> Will : Its a pun/reference to his "broken will". Fitting since his ch 2 is all about agency or lack thereof!

Tower -> Adeline : Tower has SO many good name options!!!! We went with Adeline because it means "noble", but other options we considered were Maria or Hera.

Paranoid -> Harvey : Though the name was initially suggested for vibes, it ended up sticking for the reference to William Harvey, an English physician and the first person to describe in detail the pulmonary and circulatory system!! And Paranoid's the heart liver nerves guy!!! What a perfect match :D

Nightmare -> Annabelle : Famous haunted doll!

Stubborn -> Brutus : The name I think says it all, it sounds like "brute" and means heavy!

Adversary -> Vicky : A shorter, sharper version of the regal sounding Victoria! And "victory" is in the name!

Next round:

Cheated -> Jack : Another easy to decipher choice. Blackjack is a card game, and the way he brings in all the other voices and their various skills for his ch 2 route makes him a "Jack of all trades"!

Razor -> Jill : As the nursery rhyme goes, "Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water. Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after" Jack (Cheated, as well as the other voices) get silenced first in Razor's ch 4, but Razor isn't far behind from being silenced herself, so the order of events in the rhyme matches. Jill also means "sweetheart" which is fun since it matches how she initially presents herself. It also rhymes with "kill".

Skeptic -> Cliff : Just as a climber always searches for new heights to reach, Skeptic is always on the hunt for answers! Also you fall in the Cage's route, "falling off a cliff", you get it. Full name is Cliff Grey!

Prisoner -> Cordelia : Regal sounding + Cord-elia, she uses her chains as cords in her new chapter 3! Full name is Cordelia Grey!

Opportunist -> Oliver : if you asked Opportunist what his name was, he'd tell you the name of one of his many aliases (Malcom, Jacob, Trey, Sylvester, Nick) but his real name is Oliver! It's a sweeter name than expected, just hidden behind many, many, layers. And it starts with "O"!

Witch -> Hilda : Perfect name for a witch!!

Smitten -> Romeo : I'm almost tempted to say someone calls Smitten this in-game, the connection is so obvious.

Damsel -> Daisy : It's the name of the same flower traditionally used for games of "he loves me, he loves me not", a game all about true love - that leaves a flower petal-less by the end. Her full name is Daisy Grey (sister of Cordelia!)

Final section!

Cold -> Cain : Cain's the first killer in the Bible, fits with Cold's ch 1 lead-in! We also considered Isaac since the vibes fit him so well.

Spectra -> Mary : Mary's a sweet name, but combine it with the idea of ghosts and you end up with "Bloody Mary". Fitting for the two sides she flips back and forth with in her chapter. (runner-up was Carrie)

Contrarian -> Shena : Short for "Shenanigans"!

Stranger -> Catherine : And Kathy, Catie, Kate, and Kitty. Chosen for all the different ways you can spell it and it's many off shoots!

Hunted -> Wren : Wren is a species of prey animal, specifically very small birds.

Beast -> Messalina : means "she who has an insatiable appetite", which is fitting! Also still sounds regal, which I love for Beast.

And Kitty and I agreed not to do ch 3s because that would be way too many but just as a bonus round for the two we accidentally did do:

HEA -> Theodosia : means "god's gift", something about calling her a "gift" slots right into some HEA analysis

Thorn -> Briar : Essentially just means "thorns", perfect

“What the Hell do you mean, ‘you lost him’? Find him, you incompetent fool!”

Lucifer roars in anger at the diminutive noble cowering in front of him, his voice booming across the marble hall. The demon is trembling so hard the ruler of Hell fears he’ll start crying. Or lose control of his bowels. Or both. A frequent occurrence, that, unfortunately.

“Well, what are you standing around for? Go! Find Belphegor and bring him to me. Any attempts at rebellion will be severely punished, as you well know. OUT OF MY FACE!”

The demon almost sobs with relief at being dismissed. He nearly trips onto himself in his rush to flee the throne room.

Lucifer turns to Belial, who is hiding a smirk.

“Keep tabs on him. I trust the man about as far as I can throw him.”

“As you wish, your highness.”

His counselor and spymaster moves swiftly, giving out orders to his network of agents.

“I’m surrounded by incompetents.” Lucifer mutters, rubbing at his temples, attempting to dispel yet another tension headache.

Being the ruler of Hell was not easy. Constantly fighting with Hell’s elite, with those arrogant Seraphs. Staving off rebellions, maintaining order in his chaotic realm.

At least, his Vicky was working hard at reforming the Council from within. As was angel boy, Dino, he grudgingly admits.

“Daddy! Daddy!”

Lucifer’s stern expression softens upon hearing the melodic sound. He steps down from his throne and crouches, opening his arms wide to the incoming mini tornado.

His little Levvy, his greatest treasure, the apple of his eye, runs across the hall and jumps into her daddy’s outstretched arms.

He scoops her up, grinning at his mini-me.

She really did resemble him, with her sharp gaze, raven hair. An air of authority already at 5, bossing around everyone at the palace, from servants to nobles, to Hell’s ruler himself. But she had inherited her mother’s grace and beautiful blue eyes. And artistic inclinations, it seemed.

“Daddy, look at my painting! I made it for you. See, this is you, and me, mommy, and horsey.”

The little girl joyfully hands him a paper with bright, colourful blobs. She’s covered in a rainbow of gouache, which hasn’t dried yet. Lucifer chuckles upon realizing he’s now covered in paint.

“It’s beautiful, my dear. You’re as talented as your mother.”

The demon tenderly ruffles his little girl’s hair. She giggles at the praise, her bright blue eyes gazing up at him with an expression of pure joy and adoration before she buries her face in the crook of his neck.

Lucifer’s heart swells as he holds her close. He had no idea he could feel such love – he simply didn’t think he was capable of it. Until meeting Vicky, that is. She had upended his dark, bitter world with her irreverent attitude, wit, and selflessness. She had been patient with the stubborn, arrogant demon, showing him what unconditional love was. But he hadn’t truly understood it until Leviathan’s birth.

There’s nothing Lucifer wouldn’t do for his little girl.

“Levvy, I told you to wait until daddy had finished his meetings. Now you’ve made a mess of his clothes.”

Vicky gently admonishes the little girl as she walks up, wiping her paint-covered hands with a stained rag, smiling at the tender moment.

“But mommy, I wanted to show daddy his gift now.”

Levvy pouts, peering at her mom from Lucifer’s shoulder before snuggling right back in.

“It’s alright, you know I’m always happy to see you, my little princess.”

“See! Told you so!”

She glances back up and sticks her tongue out at her mom, laughing.

“You need to stop indulging her every whim, Luci, or I’m afraid she’ll become as insufferable as you. I mean, a pony… Truly, does a 5-year-old need a pony?”

Vicky grins as she tenderly kisses her husband and proceeds to tickle the little girl into a giggling fit.

“Of course she needs a pony! If she didn’t, she wouldn’t have asked for one.”

“Luci… that’s… that’s not how this works. Kids are going to want ridiculous, extravagant things, and you can’t always cave in. She’ll never learn that there are limits, or to cherish what she has otherwise.”

“But I do cherish my horsey, just like my puppy, and the kitties, and that baby dragon daddy got me last week. I love all my pets, mommy!”

“See, she’s fine. No harm done.”

“What I see, my dear husband, is that our daughter has you wrapped around her little finger.”

Lucifer chuckles, unable to argue there.

Both of them had him wrapped around their little fingers. His two girls, the loves of his life.

And he wouldn’t have it any other way.

I saw a bit in a Taylor/Amy fic (the latest chapter of Desperate Times Call for Desperate Pleasures) where Amy compared Taylor to a Necromancer Princess (it fits in Context) and that immediately made me think of a Fantasy AU of Worm. No shards/powers, or at least not in the Worm way, but playing with the characters.

And of course that has me thinking about who everyone would be in such a story idea:

Taylor - necromancer, obviously, given the inspiration. Maybe not a princess, but of some high birth. Danny Hebert is still his canon personality, but as a necromancer. Probably a distant father since the death of Annette. Maybe he's consumed with trying to find ways to restore her to full life or something. Doesn't control bugs, maybe? Or maybe she controls swarms of dead insects in addition to or instead of the usual skeletons and zombies? I'd lean to no bugs, just skeletons and zombies, but YMMV. Keeping her bullied/etc experience may be harder, but if Emma is also a noblewoman, perhaps of higher status (maybe Taylor's low nobility? Or not at all?)

Amy - she's a cleric of some healing-related goddess, presumably? The rest of her family are probably all Knights and Paladins of some sort. Her birth father could be some sort of Bandit King type guy who played up a 'honorable highwayman' schtick (and may actually have been a noble as well as a bandit) akin to the 'code' and 'better than the other villains' thing he had going in canon. Her guilt over not healing all the time probably wouldn't be a thing because there'd be too many other healers, but you could still play with the idea, and she'd still have that separation from her family because she's not a warrior.

Tattletale - no magic, just really smart. Probably a 'Rogue', if we were applying classes to it.

Rachel - Ranger, obviously. Has a wolf animal companion, maybe actually gainfully employed as one of the Royal Huntsmen or someone who prevents poaching on a King's Forest type place. or maybe she's a poacher herself. Probably the latter, but the former could be done well, IMO. Either way, definitely still pretty feral from not spending a lot of time around most people.

Brian - maybe some kind of Paladin of darkness type thing. He could be sworn to Taylor's father as her bodyguard (and Taylor still has her canonical attraction to him).

Alec - I'm honestly not sure. If I were wedging it into D&D classes, some form of Bard, but I wouldn't necessarily want to be bound specifically to classes. Still, he could either have magic specially around manipulation and controlling of the body, or maybe he's like, half-demon, or quarter-demon (and Heartbreaker is either a demon or half-demon) and that's the source of his power. I lean towards the latter.

Aisha - Illusionist? Uses her magic for lots of pranks and stuff, and gets really good at making herself invisible, etc.

New Wave - as I noted, the rest of New Wave would probably be knights/paladins of some sort. Maybe Vicky, Sarah, Crystal and Eric ride griffons or some other flying beast? Vicky on a Pegasus sounds really fitting. Also probably a noble family, but definitely recently ennobled or low nobility, to play into the privileged WASP upper middle class vibe New Wave has in Worm

Lung - could be an actual Dragon, could be a guy who shapeshifts into one, maybe a half-dragon (playing on his half-chinese/half-japanese canon backstory and how he was an outsider in Japan as a result). Warlord or roaming bandit type guy, probably. Oni Lee would be a teleporting assassin who works for him, and Bakuda as an alchemist making explosive compounds and such is there.

Armsmaster - a master Smith and warrior. Already has a Halberd. maybe he does enchanted runes into his weapons or something to make them sharper

Miss Militia - either she's a super skilled archer of some sort, or maybe a magic who specializes in big, flashy attack spells (fireball, etc)

Dragon - Secretly a construct (or disembodied animating spirit?) of some kind that has free will and sentience, but pretends just to be a construct-crafting mage? Might not be able to keep using that name if Dragons are a thing in-setting. Depends.

Kaiser - probably a normal noble in his public face (Max, of the House of Anders), known for his charity towards the poor (only the humans, of course), but secretly the leader of a racist militia-type group that persecutes nonhumans in the Kingdom? Or specific groups of humans. Or both. Probably doesn't have magical powers, but does have some cool enchanted gear he paid a fortune for, and hides just how good he is with a sword, except in his secret persona?

Hookwolf - actual werewolf? Still works for Anders, presumably.

None of these thoughts are necessarily final, really, and I have a few more, but nothing quite formed yet.

Obviously, more might need to worked out, including plot and the particulars of the setting (is Brockton the whole Kingdom? Is Brockton Bay one city? A major focus? Maybe Brockton Bay is a larger region, and some of the various parts of the Bay are distinct cities and towns in the Bay area. I have a setting that involves both Paladins and Necromancers in prominent roles that I might repurpose if I was going to write this... which I still might, but not yet).

Other characters could play all sorts of roles, would have to think more on their equivalent versions. Can't just make everyone some flavor of wizard/warlock/witch/etc, and wouldn't want to be married to specific 'classes', but it's a solid starting point anyway.

What would you all envision 'Fantasy AU' versions of some of the characters? Do you think I'm way off the mark with some of them? Obviously 'Fantasy AU' covers a wide swath of possibilities, so there's a lot of variation. Still, curious as to people's ideas with it.

Obviously, if I wrote it, it would be Taylor/Amy in the long run, (I am nothing if not a predictable, hopeless shipper) maybe involving Taylor (and the AU's version of the Undersiders?) kidnapping Amy at some point, who knows.

People who think the Classic Doctor era Doctors don't fuck, have eyes clouded.

Like. I'm sorry. ONE had 13 children. Then collected son and granddaughter figures like crazy. Fell in love and got accidently engaged and was VERY OBVIOUSLY upset about having to leave her (Cameca), keeping the token of her affection.

TWO quite LITERALLY met Jamie, Polly said "can we keep him", Jamie said "ive got no better options. It's you or the south Americas." And TWO spent the better part of a season earning Jamie's loyalty. Jamie literally repeatedly fights off time lord mind wipes so he's more often than not plucked from time to do missions with Two whose also often out of time for Time Lord nonsense. Jamie is basically all TWO needed.

THREE (whooooo boy you guys are blind) literally was so smitten with Liz, but she was too smart to tolerate his nonsense, and he was SO grumpy about it. And then there's Ms. Josephine Grant. THEY LITERALLY MIRROR HIS MEETING HER WITH HER MEETING HER FUTURE HUSBAND. THEY ARE MIRROR IMAGES. JO LOVED THE DOCTOR AND HE LOVED HER! HE LITERALLY WENT AND STOLE THAT DAMN CRYSTAL, FOR HER! But too late, so it was a wedding present and he literally drove sadly off into the sunset.

Enter Sarah Jane who he also very quickly began "My dear"ing (something he does if you're special. Note two and three say this to the Brigadier as well 👀). They have such a short time together, but the amount of times he gently touches her face. They WHOLE fast cut away from Three nearly kissing her at one point (i believe it was Sarah not Jo, but that cut edit makes me so livid. Jon was going for the LIPS), and the way Sarah looks at Three. SHE WHOLE BREAKS DOWN when he's dying. And all he can do is touch her face and say "a tear for me Sarah?" He's so gentle and kind. She was so enamored with him. Very early Clara Twelve of her tbh.

FOUR and Sarah Jane are literally soul mates (my own preferences aside, I cannot deny them). Four is so into her. The way they act together is so Nine Rose, the way they behave. But then he runs away because damn those Time Lords again.

And while he definitely loves her, it's more akin to platonic best friend soulmatism; Leela joins Barbara as a "Best Friend" of The Doctor. Aka both become Donna Nobles before Donna Noble. "I shall miss you too savage." Is a line that tears my heart out every time. He is so sad to leave her, but at least he knows where she is. (And whole rescues her from the time war during the day of the doctor event. What a man.)

Romana I. Now this one is tough. They're very obviously flirty, but there's a sort of school ground resistance about the attraction. She makes Four feel old because she thinks it's funny and he has to up his game to impress her cause she's not a backwaters human with no knowledge. (I'll be honest. She's my least favorite of the two so while I enjoy her and she's in great serials, I retain basically nothing. Will hopefully change with the next watch through.)

Romana II. She whole changes her face and body and shows it off like she's showing him new clothes. But she's also teasing him. They whole both fall into "well we have a son now... that's..fuckin great i guess" when they meet Adric. They both are such begrudgingly parental figures but they do it and they care about him so much. Romana's departure is lame. I said what I said. But it's fine. She eventually goes to do dubious lebianisms with Leela and her girlfriend and husband it's fine. Shhh.

Tegan. (This one might get me crucified ngl) Tegan and Five. I know. I hear you. But Tegan is bisexual. And she definitely had a developing thing for Five. The way they act together is so "we could probably be epic together, or at least satisfactory... if you'd just stop being an asshole for TWO SECONDS--!" They're the screaming cat kinda couple. That never manged to couple. Because there were kids (Adric, Nyssa.) And so much bullshit happening constantly. But also don't forget Five and his fling(s) with Harry Houdini. Harry definitely thought Five was pretty.

Five and Turlough. Did you even watch Five and Turlough? Are your eyes THAT clouded? That's a Doctor and his twink. And Turlough is a different brand of twink than Jamie, and he's not much of an attack dog. But Five quite literally knowingly and willingly rehabilitate and gives him more than a 2nd chance. It's also the first on screen moment we see the light bulb go off for Clara. She KNOWS now that he likes her for sure for sure.

Out of Doctor Who's three 60th-anniversary specials, "Wild Blue Yonder" has been the episode that has been the most shrouded in mystery.
