How I Manage Food Costs as a Feedist
Preface: I often see people in this community post about struggling with food insecurity and managing food costs. These are just some tips that have helped me when I was down to the last few dollars and needed to eat for a few weeks. I understand circumstances are different for everyone, and some people struggle even with this level of food security, I have been there. My intention is to help.
With food prices still high—often due to profit gouging—I’ve found ways to manage my food budget, and the secret is simple: **eat at home!** Growing up in extreme poverty with two working parents, eating at home was pretty much our only option, aside from takeout once every few months. My parents taught me the value of home cooking, and while it takes time to develop essential skills, Making sauces, learning how to prep and clean ingredients, cooking veggies, preparing meats, etc., once you have them, there’s a whole world of recipes within reach.
Here’s how I manage food costs, and how you can too:
1. Weekly/Monthly Shopping Essentials
Start with the basics—items you’ll need to shop for regularly to cover your meals for a week or two. Building a pantry depends on the storage space you have, but here are some key ingredients to keep on hand:
- Milk (1 to 2 gallons, depending on your choice—I go with 1%)
- Eggs (18 count)
- Bread (1 loaf) (I also recommend tortillas as they last longer than bread and can be used for nearly any bread needs)
- Rolls or Croissants (If you shop at a bulk store, you can get a dozen for $6.)
- Fruits: Change with the season, but apples, oranges, and grapes are solid year-round choices. In the summer, throw in some berries and stone fruit.
- Veggies for Prep: Stick to simple, versatile veggies like green bell peppers, zucchini, onions, potatoes, and chilies.
- Butter: Unsalted sweet cream butter is my favorite! Go for sticks instead of tubs for a better per-unit cost.
- Leafy Greens: A bag of spinach or romaine hearts
- Cheese: Shredded cheese works best and if you want to save more, buy a block and slice or shred it yourself.
These staples give you a variety of flavors, textures, and nutrition to build meals around, whether you’re whipping up sides, salads, or more complex dishes.
2. Protein, Protein, Protein!
Protein is an essential part of a healthy diet, but you don’t need to overdo it or overspend. I’ve found that chicken and tofu are some of the most affordable and versatile protein sources available (unless you’re hunting your own!). Both freeze well and can be used in a variety of recipes with different seasonings and marinades.
You can also look at beef, but stick to lean beef and fish as you do not want to pay for fat that will not end up in your food.
3. Shelf-Stable Items to Buy in Bulk
Buying in bulk can be a game changer, especially if you stock up on shelf-stable items. If you’re short on storage space, invest in an airtight tote to keep things organized. Start with common essentials like:
- Flour (Good ole AP with cover you most of the time)
- Sugar
- Baking Powder
- Baking Soda
- Brown Sugar
- Cooking Oil (I go for olive oil and canola oil)
These staples are the foundation of countless recipes and, when stored properly, can last for months or even a year.
4. Season Early, Season Often
Spices are what make food magical! You don’t need fancy brands—stick with basics that offer single-ingredient profiles. My go-to spices are:
- Salt
- Pepper
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder
- Thyme
- Oregano
- Paprika
- Cumin
- Cinnamon
- Chili Powder
- Vanilla Extract
- Bouillon Cubes
- Red Pepper Flakes
These spices will give you all the flavor you need to create a variety of meals without breaking the bank.
5. Canned Goods: The Unsung Hero
Canned goods are a staple in my kitchen. They offer consistent quality, low prices, and a long shelf life. Plus, they’re great for backup when fresh ingredients are low. Some key canned items to keep on hand are:
- Pinto Beans
- Crushed Tomatoes
- Tomato Paste
- Tomato Sauce
- Boiled White Potatoes
- Herring or Sardines
- Tuna
- Fruit Cocktail
- Peaches
- Pears
- Broth or Stock
These ingredients can help you create filling and versatile meals on a budget.
6. Where You Shop Matters
The store you shop at can make a huge difference in food prices. Here’s how to stretch your budget even further:
Bulk Stores: Invest in a membership at places like Sam’s Club, Costco, or BJ’s. The $100 yearly fee is usually paid for in savings after just a few trips. Protein, especially beef and fish, is almost always cheaper in bulk stores.
Walmart and Aldi: These stores are great for extras like frozen veggies, fresh produce, dairy items, and baked goods. Their prices are hard to beat!
Hope this helps and feel free to reblog or comment with your own tips and tricks!
Stick to Your List: One of the easiest ways to overspend and waste food is by shopping without a plan. Make a list, and stick to it. This will help keep your budget in check and prevent unnecessary purchases.
By following these steps, you can keep your food costs down while still eating healthy and delicious meals. The key is planning ahead, shopping smart, and keeping a well-stocked pantry!

Ways to use magickal oils: for witches and non-witches
In your beauty routine:
Depending on the carrier oil, spell oils can be a great addition to skin care and hair care! Some carrier oils provide a lot of skin and hair benefits.
Castor oil contains triglycerides, which help maintain moisture in the skin. This can help with dry skin. Castor oil can also be applied generously as a hair mask and wash off, or apply very liberally to the ends of hair to help with frizz. This is depending on hair type.
Grapeseed oil is an effective treatment to decrease split ends. On the skin, grapeseed oil can help with breakouts, treat dry skin, and gently fade some scars. It’s also non-comedogenic meaning it won’t clog pores. This could be a good option for someone with oily skin.
Sweet almond oil has a lot of vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and antioxidants that can sooth both the skin and hair. It can help approve the appearance of dry and irritated skin.
Jojoba oil is anti-inflammatory and can reduce redness, help with chaffing, and keep skin calm. For hair, it can strengthen hair strands and reduce hair porosity buildup. It is both antifungal and antibacterial.
Sunflower seed oil can make hair shiny and strong. It can help tame frizz as well as treat dandruff. When used on the skin, it can help skin retain moisture.
*Always be wary of your skin sensitivities and allergies when buying or making your own oil blends.
Ways to use them in your beauty routine:
Add a few drops to your bath for aromatherapy.
Mix a few drops into your liquid soap (great for cleansing and/or protection!)
Mix a few drops in your palm with your favorite lotion. Rub it into your skin while saying affirmations.
Deposit a few drops through your hair while damp.
Dab it on your pressure points to use as perfume.
If you make soap, add a few drops into your soap for a magickal boost.
In your cooking:
Some carrier oils can be great to cook with! *Make sure not to add essential oils to these blends and use food safe herbs. You’re responsible for your own allergens.
Olive oil is already a pantry staple for many people. Try making an oil blend steeping your favorite kitchen herbs and spices in olive oil to use in your cooking.
Avocado oil is another great oil you can do this with if you prefer.
Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use it as an oil blend. Heat up the amount you want in a pot and add your herbs. Keep the heat low to infuse your herbs then place into a jar to solidify.
In magick:
Oils are super versatile and they’re a staple for many witches. The most common way they’re used is to anoint candles for spells and rituals. This can even go as far as anointing deity candles as an offering.
They can also be used to anoint objects. By taking a small amount of oil and rubbing it onto an object, you can add energy and charm it with your intention. This works for talismans as well.
You can also anoint yourself! Certain points on the body can be anointed depending on your intention. Anoint your throat with a confidence oil before giving a presentation to aid in communication; anoint your forehead with a psychic oil to aid in divination; anoint your pressure points with a love oil to draw someone in.
The possibilities are endless.

🍲🔥Cauldrons and Modern-Day Alternatives 🍲🔥

Crockpots and Slow Cookers: These kitchen staples are perfect for simmering magical potions and brews over a long period of time. Use them to infuse your home with delicious scents and positive energy.
Cast Iron Skillets: With their sturdy construction and ability to retain heat, cast iron skillets make excellent vessels for cooking up spells and rituals. Season yours with intention and use it to whip up magical concoctions.
Mortar and Pestle: While traditionally used for grinding herbs and spices, a mortar and pestle can also be used to mix and blend ingredients for spellwork. Choose one made from natural materials and dedicate it to your magical practice.
Mason Jars: These versatile containers are perfect for storing herbs, potions, and other magical ingredients. Use them to create spell jars, charms, and talismans, or simply to infuse your pantry with positive energy.
Enamelware: With its retro charm and durable construction, enamelware is a popular choice among modern witches for brewing up magical concoctions. Choose a brightly colored pot or kettle and let it become a focal point of your kitchen altar.
Remember, it's not the tool itself that holds power, but the intention and energy you infuse into your magical workings. Choose tools that resonate with you and your practice, and let your creativity flow! 🌟🔮

Soft & Chewy Oatmeal Banana Cookies
There’s nothing quite like a simple, wholesome cookie that you can enjoy guilt-free. These oatmeal banana cookies are naturally sweetened with honey and bananas, packed with the nuttiness of peanut butter, and finished with a touch of chocolate to make them feel a little indulgent. They’re perfect for a quick breakfast, a snack on the go, or even dessert! The best part? They’re super easy to whip up with pantry staples.
The Story
This recipe came to life during one of those moments when I craved something sweet but didn’t want to derail my healthy eating goals. I had a few overripe bananas sitting on the counter, and instead of making yet another banana bread, I thought, “Why not cookies?” What makes these cookies special is their simplicity—they’re made with ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. No flour, no added sugar, just pure goodness. The chocolate chips add the perfect little pop of sweetness, but you can easily skip them if you’re keeping things even lighter.
What You’ll Need
• 🍌 Bananas – 2 ripe
• 🥜 Peanut butter – 1/2 cup (creamy or chunky, your choice)
• 🍯 Honey – 2 tbsp
• 🍦 Vanilla extract – 1 tsp
• 🌾 Overnight oats – 2 cups
• 🥄 Cinnamon – 1/2 tsp
• 🍫 Chocolate chips – 1/4 cup
How to Make Them
Step 1: Mash & Mix
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a large mixing bowl, mash the bananas until smooth. Add the peanut butter, honey, and vanilla extract. Stir until combined.
Step 2: Add Dry Ingredients
1. Mix in the oats and cinnamon until the mixture forms a sticky dough. Fold in the chocolate chips (or save some to sprinkle on top).
Step 3: Shape & Bake
1. Scoop out tablespoons of the dough and roll them into balls. Place them on the baking sheet and flatten gently with the back of a spoon.
2. Bake for 10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Let cool for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Why You’ll Love Them
These cookies are naturally sweetened and incredibly versatile. You can swap peanut butter for almond butter, add chopped nuts for extra crunch, or sprinkle sea salt on top for a salty-sweet combo. They’re also freezer-friendly, making them perfect for meal prep!
Let’s Chat!
Have you tried oatmeal banana cookies before? What are your favorite mix-ins? I’d love to hear how you make these your own—tag me if you try this recipe!

White, brown or red? A guide to choosing the healthiest rice for your meals
Rice is a staple food for millions of people around the world, providing a versatile and comforting base for countless dishes. With so many varieties available, choosing the healthiest rice for your meals can be overwhelming. Whether you're looking for a quick side dish, a hearty main course, or a gluten-free option, understanding the nutritional benefits and culinary uses of white, brown and red rice can help you make the best choice for your diet and lifestyle.
In this guide you'll explore the unique properties of each rice type, providing valuable information about their health benefits, nutritional profiles and ideal cooking methods. In the end, you'll be armed with the knowledge to choose the right rice for your meals, enhancing both your health and culinary experience.
Nutritional Comparison: White, Brown and Red Rice
When it comes to nutritional content, not all rice is the same. Each variety offers different benefits that meet different dietary needs and preferences.
White rice: Often considered the most popular, white rice is milled and polished, removing the bran and germ. This process results in a softer texture and longer shelf life but also reduces its nutritional content. White rice is typically enriched with iron and B vitamins, making it a robust choice. However, it has a higher glycemic index (GI) than other varieties, which can more significantly impact blood sugar levels.
Brown rice: A whole grain, brown rice retains its bran and germ, preserving essential nutrients such as fiber, magnesium, and phosphorus. Its high fiber content aids digestion and may contribute to heart health by lowering cholesterol levels. Brown rice has a lower GI than white rice, making it a more suitable choice for those managing blood sugar levels.
Red rice: Known for its distinctive color and nutty flavor, red rice is rich in anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that give it its red color. These antioxidants are believed to reduce inflammation and support heart health. Red rice is also rich in fiber, iron, and other essential nutrients, making it a nutrient-rich option for any meal.
Health Benefits and Considerations
Benefits of white rice: Although often overshadowed by its nutrient-rich counterparts, white rice remains a good choice for those with digestive sensitivities. Its mild flavor and soft texture make it easily digestible, and it is often packed with essential nutrients. Additionally, white rice is a quick-cooking grain, ideal for busy weeknights.
Benefits of brown rice: The fiber in brown rice can aid digestion and promote a feeling of fullness, which can be beneficial for weight management. Its low GI also makes it a better choice for individuals with diabetes or those looking to stabilize blood sugar levels. The nutrient profile of brown rice supports heart health and provides sustained energy.
Benefits of Red Rice: The high antioxidant content in red rice provides unique health benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties and potential protection against chronic diseases. Its robust flavor pairs well with a variety of dishes, making it a versatile addition to your pantry. The iron content in red rice may also be a valuable nutrient for those at risk for anemia.
Choosing the Right Rice for Your Dietary Needs
Choosing the right rice depends on your dietary preferences and health goals. For those following a gluten-free diet, all three types of rice are safe choices. If you are focused on weight management or blood sugar control, brown or red rice may be more suitable due to its low GI and high fiber content. For athletes or individuals who need an instant energy boost, white rice may be a practical option.
Also consider the type of food you're preparing. The neutral flavor of white rice pairs well with a wide range of dishes, from stir-fries to desserts. The chewy texture and nutty taste of brown rice is perfect for grain bowls and salads, while the rich flavor of red rice can enhance soups, stews, and hearty main dishes.
You can also order large quantities of healthy Basmati rice from Vi Exports India.

today in low-energy cooking: made this to go over broccoli tonight and it was extremely yummy and easy! i’m tired so i used garlic powder and onion powder in place of the real deals and it still came out great!
also (she said, discreetly climbing onto her soapbox) since it’s used in this recipe—nutritional yeast is a useful and nutrient-dense ingredient to have on hand.
for those unfamiliar with it—it contains all 9 essential amino acids, making it a complete protein (like you get from meat). depending on the brand, one 2 tbsp serving provides usually around 5g of complete protein (an impressive amount of complete protein for such a small amount of food).
fortified nutritional yeast is especially high in B-complex vitamins (particularly B12 and folic acid), so it’s a really good source of those if you’re trying to get more B-vitamins in.
and it’s also just really delicious. it has a cheesy, nutty, creamy, savory flavor. it’s a great and highly versatile and vitamin-mineral-protein-dense pantry staple to have on hand that is shelf stable. if you’re trying to learn about how to get more nutritional bang out of your pantry stock, i recommend looking into it, even just as an occasional sprinkle-on topping for popcorn or seasoning for pasta, soups, veggies, anything else.
it’s a wonderful “low-effort” ingredient for my fellow chronic fatigue girls. a little of it goes a long way.
anyway lol back to this recipe!!! a winner for me, low-effort and minimal-ingredient, lots of flavor!
#i have some digestive allergies to yeast and miso but i don’t care it’s SO yummy#i always sounds like a salesman for food but idc#nutritional yeast is cool and if you never heard of it before here it is

Creative Ways to Use Thank You Bags in Everyday Life
Thank you bags are often seen as simple carriers designed for convenience, but have you ever thought of them as more than just a way to transport goods? Whether you're a business owner looking to maximize branding opportunities or just someone exploring creative hacks in daily life, thank you bags can serve a wide range of purposes. From their functional design to their stylish customization options, there's a lot to appreciate.
This blog explores how thank you bags—whether they’re used for retail, gifting, or personal projects—can add value and creativity to your everyday routines. Read on to discover some innovative ways to use thank you bags and how they go beyond just carrying items.
What Are Thank You Bags?
Thank you bags are lightweight and durable plastic or reusable bags that typically feature the words “Thank You” prominently printed on them. They’ve become a staple in retail and food industries for their practicality and simplicity. These bags are more than functional; they leave a subtle yet memorable impression of gratitude, which helps build positive relationships with customers.
But their uses aren’t limited to retail. From grocery shopping to arts and crafts projects, thank you bags have an endless array of applications—for work, home, and creativity.
The Benefits of Thank You Bags
Before we get into the practical ways to use them, here’s why thank you bags are worth appreciating:
Lightweight and Durable: Easy to carry but strong enough to hold a variety of items securely.
Branding Opportunity: Serves as a silent ambassador for businesses, reinforcing brand identity and customer loyalty.
Cost-Effective: Both economical for bulk purchasing and versatile for multiple applications.
Customizable Appeal: Can be tailored—size, color, and design—to suit different business and personal needs.
Eco-Friendly Options: Many thank you bags now come in reusable or biodegradable materials, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.
Now that we understand their value, here are some creative ways you can incorporate these handy helpers into your everyday activities.
Creative Ways to Use Thank You Bags
1. Gift Wrapping That Says “Thanks”
Turn thank you bags into personalized wrapping for smaller gifts. Cut and fold the bag into an artistic arrangement, and secure it with ribbons or bows. This small touch not only saves on wrapping paper but also adds a unique flair. Opt for thank you bags with elegant designs or patterns for a more polished look.
Pro Tip: For the best effect, use bags with your brand’s logo if you're gifting clients or partners—they’ll remember your thoughtfulness and attention to detail.
2. Reusable Grocery Organizer
Grocery shopping can be a lot easier when your packaging is organized. Use thank you bags to separate fresh produce, meats, and pantry staples into compact groups within your main reusable shopping tote. Their lightweight yet sturdy design makes them perfect for preventing items from mixing or leaking.
Additionally, thank you grocery bags are ideal for separating items in the fridge or pantry after a shopping trip. Label them for easy organization and reuse them until they wear out.
3. Impromptu Tote for Everyday Errands
Forgot your tote bag? No problem! Keep a thank you bag or two tucked away in your car, backpack, or pocket. They’re lightweight and fold small, making them the perfect emergency carrier for those unplanned trips where you need to carry extra items.
4. DIY Arts and Crafts Projects
Thank you bags are a goldmine for arts and crafts enthusiasts. Create woven mats, colorful wall art, or decorative garlands by cutting and arranging the bags into different designs. This is an especially fun and eco-friendly project for kids or classrooms looking to recycle materials.
5. Storage Solutions At Home
Use thank you bags as lightweight storage options for small or oddly-shaped items. Whether it’s seasonal decorations, art supplies, or camping essentials, these bags can help minimize clutter while keeping items grouped together. Label each bag for quick access when needed.
6. Brand Visibility for Small Businesses
For small businesses, every touchpoint counts. Custom thank you bags can make a lasting impression on customers, giving them a tangible and practical "thank you" after every purchase. Whether you're a boutique store or an independent bakery, bag customization allows you to align with your brand’s image.
Examples: Include your business’ logo, colors, and contact info alongside the thank you message. These custom features reinforce your identity while giving customers something functional they’ll carry around, providing free advertising to a wider audience.
7. Thank You Gift Bags for Special Occasions
Elevate traditional thank you bags by turning them into thoughtful gift bags for special occasions, such as weddings, baby showers, or corporate events. Include items such as:
Mini bottles of wine
Luxurious bath products
Hand-crafted candles
Personalized thank you notes
Gourmet treats like chocolates, pastries, or artisanal snacks
If your thank you bag is reusable and stylish, the recipient can continue to use it long after the event, extending the life of your thoughtful gesture.
8. Eco-Friendly Plant Grow Bags
Did you know thank you bags can double as plant grow bags for your indoor or outdoor garden? Simply poke a few drainage holes at the bottom, fill the bag with soil, and plant herbs, flowers, or small vegetables. Everything You Need to Know About Dehydrated Onion and Garlic
Cooking with fresh ingredients is always delightful, but Processed onion and garlic have become indispensable in kitchens worldwide. Their unique combination of convenience, long shelf life and intense flavor make them a must-have for both professional chefs and home cooks. If you’ve ever wondered what makes these pantry staples so special, this blog will delve into everything you need to know about dehydrated onion and garlic.
What Are Dehydrated Onion and Garlic?
Dehydrated onion and garlic are simply fresh onions and garlic that have undergone a drying process to remove their moisture content. This dehydration process can be accomplished through various methods such as air drying, freeze-drying or using specialized drying equipment. What remains is a concentrated form of these vegetables that retains their flavor and aroma, with the added benefit of extended shelf life.
Dehydrated onion comes in different forms, such as flakes, granules or powder, while dehydrated garlic is commonly available as minced garlic, garlic granules or garlic powder. These forms cater to different culinary applications, making them versatile and user-friendly.
Benefits of Using Dehydrated Onion and Garlic
1. Long Shelf Life One of the standout features of Processed onion and garlic is their longevity. Unlike fresh onions and garlic, which can spoil within weeks, dehydrated versions can last for months or even years when stored properly. This makes them a cost-effective and reliable option for maintaining a well-stocked pantry.
2. Convenience Using Processed onion and garlic eliminates the need for peeling, chopping or mincing. This particularly benefits busy cooks or those looking to simplify meal preparation. A quick scoop or sprinkle is all it takes to add robust flavors to your dish.
3. Reduced Waste How often have you bought fresh onions or garlic only to throw them away because they’ve gone bad? Processed onion and garlic reduce food waste by providing a long-lasting alternative that stays fresh in your pantry until you’re ready to use them.
4. Consistent Flavor The dehydration process intensifies the flavors of onion and garlic, ensuring consistency in taste. This is particularly important for recipes that require precise flavoring, such as soups, sauces and spice blends.
5. Lightweight and Easy to Store Dehydrated onion and garlic are compact and lightweight, making them easy to store even in small kitchens. Their portability also makes them a great choice for camping, hiking or emergency preparedness kits.
Forms of Dried Onion and Garlic
1. Flakes Dehydrated garlic flakes and Onion flakes are coarsely dried pieces that are perfect for slow-cooking dishes like stews, soups and casseroles. They rehydrate during the cooking process, infusing your dish with deep flavor.
2. Granules Granulated onion and garlic have a finer texture than flakes but are not as fine as powders. They’re ideal for seasoning blends, rubs and marinades.
3. Powder Onion and garlic powders are the finest form of dehydration, making them dissolve easily in liquids. They are often used in sauces, gravies and baked goods for a smooth texture and consistent flavor distribution.
4. Minced Minced garlic is made up of small, dried pieces of garlic. It’s an excellent substitute for fresh minced garlic in sautéed dishes, stir-fries and dressings.
How to Use Dehydrated Onion and Garlic
Dehydrated onion and garlic are versatile ingredients that can be used in countless recipes. Here are some ideas:
1. Soups and Stews Add onion flakes and garlic granules directly to your soups and stews. They will rehydrate as they cook, releasing their concentrated flavors into the broth.
2. Seasoning Mixes Dehydrated onion and garlic are essential components of many spice blends. Combine them with herbs, spices and salt to create your own seasoning mix for meats, vegetables or popcorn.
3. Marinades Mix granulated garlic and onion with olive oil, vinegar and spices to create a quick and flavorful marinade for meats or vegetables.
4. Rub for Roasts Combine onion powder, garlic powder and other spices to make a dry rub for chicken, beef or pork. The dehydrated ingredients’ intense flavors will infuse into the meat as it cooks.
5. Baked Goods Add garlic or onion powder to bread doughs, bagels or crackers for a savory twist. You can also sprinkle onion flakes on top of focaccia for added texture and flavor.
6. Emergency Cooking In situations where fresh ingredients are unavailable, dehydrated onion and garlic can be lifesavers. Use them to quickly add flavor to instant noodles, canned soups or pre-packaged meals.
How to Rehydrate Dehydrated Onion and Garlic
While you can use dehydrated onion and garlic in their dried forms, rehydrating them can help mimic the texture of fresh ingredients. Here’s how:
Place the dehydrated onion or garlic in a bowl.
Add enough warm water to cover them.
Let them soak for 10-15 minutes until they rehydrate.
Drain the excess water and use the rehydrated onion or garlic as you would fresh.
Storage Tips
To maximize the shelf life of Preserved onion and garlic, follow these storage tips:
Store them in airtight containers to prevent moisture from getting in.
Keep them in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight.
Use a desiccant packet in the container to absorb any residual moisture.
Are Dried onion and garlic Healthy?
Yes! Dried onion and garlic retain most of their nutrients during the drying process, including vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They are also low in calories and rich in compounds like allicin, which has been linked to various health benefits, including improved heart health and immune support.
