I’m listening through the Verity! podcast back catalogue because I’d like some more woman-led discussion of doctor who and
why can they never call something that is sexist sexist?? They twist themselves into knots on the Time of the Angels/Flesh and Stone episode to not call the ending sexual assault. Same thing with the Let’s Kill Hitler episode. Just completely unwilling to name the elephant in the room.
So disappointing

Waris Hussein unveils producer Verity Lambert's blue plaque.
While Anthony Coburn's son throws a hissy fit about a young Black man cast as Doctor Who, I'd like to celebrate director Waris Hussein, a young Black man (as British South Asians were then known) whose thankless task it was to turn Coburn's mediocre caveman script into a vehicle that would hold viewers' attention from the pilot, Unearthly Child, until The Daleks.
Above: Waris Hussein. Below: Sacha Dhawan and Jessica Raine as Waris Hussein and Verity Lambert in An Adventure in Space and Time.
Ten years ago, we got a historical docudrama paying homage to Doctor Who's difficult beginnings, when it was punted to a young minority producer and director expected to fail.
Last spring, the Radio Times published what I assume was one of its primary sources:
The 1963 Doctor Who diaries of Waris Hussein - part 2 - part 3
They're a fascinating read.
But while he's tactfully grateful to Doctor Who for helping launch his career, Waris Hussein has had a long, successful career since then, earning an Emmy, a BAFTA, and a slew of nominations, including one for the 1974 historical miniseries Shoulder to Shoulder (Youtube) on British suffragettes.
Here's a link to a good print interview with him. I also recommend listening to the beginning of this podcast interview, as his voice conveys the thoughtfulness he puts into everything:
(SNS Online is a podcast on all the usual platforms, if you want to look up pt 2.)
*Trivia note: Ian McKellan credits Waris Hussein with his first film role. The young director cut his teeth directing Cambridge peers McKellan, Derek Jacobi and Trevor Nunn (the token straight).

Hey can knock out and starscream have a podcast. Where they just gossip about the bots and cons and they have like special guests some times. They bring breakdown in to talk fasion. Soundwave gives movie reviews. The vehicons have a verity of topics but most talk about tv shows and celebrities that they like. And megatron he rants about the working class and actually gets quite an audience with the low income people of the world. But hey ya know the decapticon podcast.

#godddddddddd yeah#dr who#10 era#w/ rose it's a 'young carefree love' feel w/ martha it's a 'mentally ill grad student struggler' feel#w/ donna it's a 'insane adult with a job who needs a vacation constantly' feel#and w/ wilf it's a 'i am so old and i have seen a countless number of horrors over the years' feel

Fluffy fanfic rec list
On one of my Discord servers people were talking about how people seem more likely to recommend angsty fic, so I decided to put together a fluff rec list, just for fun! This is gonna be a variety of fandoms, wordcount length, genres, etc. -- the common factor is I like ‘em and they turned up when I search “fluff” in my bookmarks. I’ll point out if any are nsfw
ATLA
see your son rising at last by aloneintherain -- ATLA -- 6.5k words -- Iroh & Zuko 5+1 things fic
North by ryfkah -- ATLA -- 300 words -- short & sweet Appa POV fic
definitely not suspicious at all in the least by presumenothing -- ATLA -- 1k words -- post-canon Gaang shenanigans
All The Gentle Creatures by Haicrescendo -- ATLA -- 10k words -- animals love Zuko, he’s basically a Disney Princess
Yuri!!! On Ice
see you next level by verity -- YoI -- 1.5k words -- Yuuri, Viktor & Phichit get drunk & watch TV, Yuuri & Viktor continue to be the most adorably sappy couple
Friendship!!! Is Magic by afrai -- YoI & OHSHC -- 10k words -- Yuuri & Haurhi meet at a conference and become friends. Viktor & Tamaki make fools of themselves (but what else is new)
Howl’s Moving Castle (mostly bookverse)
Second Time Lucky by labellementeuse -- HMC -- 5.5k words -- Howl & Sophie plan their wedding (lol i spelled that “weeding” on the first try... also accurate). As you might expect for these two it doesn’t go without some hiccups.
Could it be magic? by SpiritedYoungLady -- HMC -- 500 words -- Howls comes back from night with the rugby club, and Sophie is unamused
Fulllmetal Alchemist (mostly bhood/manga)
All That Describes a Joyful Heart by anthrop -- FMA -- 3k words -- Hohenheim & Trisha cook together during a winter storm & they are simply TOO ADORABLE. Features some Xerxian cultural headcanons inspired by Nowruz (Persian New Year) traditions!
And They Were ROOMMATES by Turbulent_Muse -- FMA -- 30k words -- Modern AU in which college student!Ling moves into a haunted house, but since the rent is too good to pass up, he decides to try and befriend the demon. Greedling friendship & adventure fic.
Science for People Who Hate Science by Tierfal -- FMA -- 66k words -- Royed Modern AU, but even if you dislike that ship you might want to give this one a chance; it’s really more of an origfic about two characters losely inspired by Roy & Ed. They run a goofy educational youtube channel and are two dorks in love. Al shows up to make fun of them sometimes. It’s a good time!
The Sleeping Horror of Whiskerford by Eltea -- FMA -- 3.5k words -- another modern AU, in which the gang (Ed, Al, Winry, Riza, Roy, Hughes) plays D&D. Worth it for Ed’s character sheet alone, but overall just a hilarious & fun time.
A Clowder of Cats by Batsutousai -- FMA -- 4k words -- post-canon (a more-or-less canon universe fic for once!), Al settles down and adopts a bunch of cats (AS HE DESERVES)
Teen Wolf
the butt is a gift by lazulisong -- Teen Wolf -- 1.5k words -- Stiles is pinned to the couch by cats. I think this is part of a larger AU but tbh I don’t care: Stiles, cats, relatable dilemmas, what more do I need?
When the Bough Breaks by The Feels Whale (miscellea) -- Teen Wolf -- 12k words -- A bit of a weird one, but sometimes I like my TW fic weird. post-canon-ish/canon-divergence with endgame Sterek; Stiles is on the outs with Derek’s pack until they learn that he’s adopted a baby, and then they’re suddenly all over to dote on her. I actually really mostly liked this for Stiles’ single parent struggles and (platonic) relationship with the baby’s birth mother, the werewolf stuff & romance was cute but mostly incidental.
Misc fandoms
it's a new craze by attheborder -- Good Omens -- 5k words -- Crowley & Aziraphale start an advice podcast
Hot Springs and New Beginnings by CorundumBleu -- Hollow Knight -- 3k words -- in a good ending universe, Quirrel, the Knight, and The Last Stag relax at a hot springs and discuss hopes for the future. I recommend looking through CorundumBleu’s other HK fics as well -- there’s a couple other good fluff fics in there and some most angsty but still amazing stories! (I’m biased: CB is my sister & I helped edit these, but still, I think they’re great!)
Sufficient by atheilen -- The Goblin Emperor -- 2k words -- deaged!Maia; in which everyone and particularly Beshelar shows how much they care for and cherish Maia.
Sick Day by avg (AnxiousEspada) -- The Murderbot Diaries -- 4k words -- Overse & Arada are sick; Ratthi and later Murderbot visit to help them out. “To everyone’s surprise, a feverish Overse is SecUnit approved humor-fuel.” (P.S. if you like this fic consider checking out my sequel to it!)
Thrilling Night! Romantic Adventure at the Video Rental Store! by Masu_Trout -- Undertale -- 2.5k words -- wonderful Outsider POV of an employee at a video rental store who gets the admittedly uncertain priviledge of helping Alphys and Undyne pick out a movie to rent for their date night. I’m still not over the movie they end up picking, OMG.
Gonna add a reblog with BNHA, Natsuyu, Gravity Falls, and maybe some HP recs tomorrow.
Also, if you like these fics and know of more like them, feel free to let me know! I’m always taking fic recs (I’m slow to get around to them but I WILL save your recs for later) :P

AĞUSTOS 2023
Bu ay için söyleyebileceğim en iyi cümle bu olabilir: Not bad but not good.
Bu ayın cümlesi: Embrace all that is yours.
İzlediklerim: The Queen's Gambit, Modern Family.
Podcast: OSB Ünlü Yazarların Sıra Dışı Yönleri, OSB Başarının Temeli: Başarısızlık, OSB Dünyayı Değiştiren Fikirler, OSB Etkili İletişim, OSB Platon/Mağara Alegorisi, OSB Vazgeçebilmek, OSB Sindirella Kompleksi/ Bağımsızlıktan Korkuyor Musun?, OSB Sevgi Dilini Öğren....
Kitaplar: Vezir Gambiti, Sevme Sanatı, Verity, Bir İdam Mahkumunun Son Günü,Ötanazi Okulu, Maça Kızı(Puşkin), Masumiyet Müzesi(Hâlâ okuyorum.).
Şarkılar: Adrenaline, Unutulur Her Şey, Ölürüm Sana...

Fanfiction Commissions Open!!
Random AU? Reader fic? Some trope you like but no one's ever done it with your comfort ship? A cursed, unhinged crossover no one has done? Whatever it is, I can handle it!
Pricing: $1 per 250 words. (Currency: United States Dollar)
Payment Method: ko-fi or Paypal, depending on your comfort levels.
Time Frame: Unless there are extenuating circumstances, or you want a commission above 10k words, I guarantee you I will finish your commission in two weeks.
Specialties: -Crossovers, angst, fluff, and everything in between. Romance, friendship, and queerplatonic relationships are all on the table. -I have done extensive research on chronic pain, blindness, and a bunch of conditions that would require mobility aids, but have personal experience with neurodivergent conditions, hearing loss, and epilepsy. -Complicated thoughts on religion, culture, internalized ableism, and sexual/gender identity are all things I am equipped to write as well.
Maybes: -Smut. Describe what you're looking for, and I'll decide whether I'm up for it. Might charge extra $3 depending on the request.
Hard Nos: -Abusive relationships being romanticized (I'll do regular abuse if that's what you want, but it won't be romanticized.) -A minor with an adult. Or sexual content with children in general. -Outright homophobia, transphobia, and other hateful content. (If its shown to be a problem the main character faces, or doubts, that's okay, but the writing itself should not led credence to these awful things.)
Posting: Depending on what you prefer, I can send it to you privately, post it on Tumblr, or on my AO3. If you go for a public posting, you get to choose if your name is publicly pointed out.
DM me if you're interested!!
I have a lot of fandoms I'm involved in, so sixty seven of them are being listed below the cut, but if you don't see the fandom of your choice there, just ask if I've heard of it in the DMs and I probably will have. If I haven't, I'll probably watch it free of charge to get a feel for the characters.

RANDOM MUSING: LOL. A friend here just reminded me that Chris has apparently wiped his memory of having done the Anna Faris podcast in 2016 with Jenny. As well as the podcasts he did in 2020 for Defending Jacob.// Is he the kind of person who just says shit? Like he’s always saying things like that about the pod or like how he’s a morning person but he’s said before he’s a night owl. I get the sense he doesn’t care a lot about the verity of what comes out of his mouth because he’s constantly contradicting himself on small, unimportant things. I think most people care more about honesty.
I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt on this subject and say he just forgot. He hasn't done a ton of podcast interviews, and many of them are years ago. I would assume most interviews start to just blend together in your memory when you start doing a ton of them for press tours.
However, "forgetting" the Anna Faris podcast, that's a big forget. I think that is more of a "no longer wanting to bring it up at all" situation.

Safe Area Goražde by Joe Sacco
The Way of the House-Husband, vol. 1 by Kousuke Oono
SAGA vol. 1-6 by Fiona Staples and Brian K Vaughan
Top of the Top:
Born a Crime was probably my favourite non ficition, and most of that probably is due to Trevor Noah's narration skills. It was very entertaining and heartfelt.
Less uplifting but just as gripping in a different way was Empire of Pain. Excellent book that went deep into the why and what and hows of Purdue Pharma. Anger inducing.
Lazarus Heist is great and available as a podcast. The book is more or less the podcast word for word.
Fictionwise: I read Trust at the start of the year and it was a bit soon to declare as favourite of the year, but it's stil made the final cut. Just very imaginative and intriguing. Just my kind of MetaFiction. Clever without being cleverclever.
Demon Copperhead I read right off the back of Empire of Pain so maybe that coloured my experience. I've not read any Dickens so loads of references no doubt flew past me, but the language was acrobatic and zingy. I loved it.
Wrapped up the year on a high with North Woods. That was so unexpected and entertaining. Again with the playful language, memorable characters and a unique approach to tying all the various stories together. One that sticks in the mind and makes the writer in me wonder how I can replicate his style (with my own personal twist of course.)
#a whole bunch of books#reading roundup#Still one day to go but i don't think i'm going to finish anything else#year in books#2023 in books
