Challenges in Autonomous Vehicle Testing and Validation
Tumblr media
A study, prepared by Strategy Analytics, predicts autonomous vehicles will create a massive economic opportunity that will scale from $800 billion in 2035 (the base year of the study) to $7 trillion by 2050. An estimated 585,000 lives could be saved due to autonomous vehicles between 2035 and 2045, the study predicts.
While science fiction movies of the 20th century predicted that we’d have flying cars by now, it appears that there are a different set of overarching themes in the auto industry currently on the cusp of becoming a widespread reality. Electric power and the discussion around emissions, has arguably received the most media attention, however other trends such as vehicle sharing, and vehicles being connected to the internet and each other are also becoming prominent. A yearly updating model, where both software and hardware (particularly in fleets), will also become relevant to reflect rapid changes in technology. The final trend is perhaps one with the most technological challenges, and the greatest implication for changing how humans interact with cars (and transport in general): autonomous vehicles.
An autonomous vehicle (also called a driver-less or self-driving vehicle) is one that senses its environment and operates without any human involvement. Companies such as Waymo, Uber, Tesla, and a myriad of others have been testing solutions for many years, however the task of testing and validating driverless vehicle technology comes with an array of challenges. Coupled with the fact that lives are at stake (both for passengers and pedestrians), there is little room for error. So what are the challenges facing autonomous vehicle testing and validation?
Let’s start with the issue of gathering enough data, which needs to be collected both from vehicle sensors and from external sources, which is then used to train AI models. While real-world testing offers valuable feedback, there is the difficulty of scaling, where it is physically infeasible to run the millions of miles of tests required to gather enough data. Additionally, there is a need for test commonality, whereby identical tests are run with different types of vehicles. So how does such a large number of tests get carried out in an appropriate time frame? The answer lies in parallelized computer simulations, where, in the case of Waymo, they can achieve around 20 million miles a day in their Carcraft simulation platform (the equivalent of 100 years of driving on public roads). Waymo Driver, the company’s autonomous vehicle software suite, has reportedly accumulated over 15 billion simulated autonomous miles as of April 2020.
The AI that drives a vehicle needs to also take into account various nuances during the vehicle’s operation, including the comfort of its passengers, which can sometimes be an overlooked factor during the testing process, which is why Waymo takes into account what it calls “Comfort Metrics”. Jonathan Karmel, Product Lead, Simulation & Automation at Waymo explained to VentureBeat that “Some of the key components are things like acceleration and deceleration, and we want to receive that information into simulation to predict what we think a rider or driver reaction would have been in the real world. There’s a machine learning model to predict what those reactions are in (Carcraft).”
While comfort is important, safety is essential. Autonomous vehicles sometimes struggle during adverse weather conditions, and when approaching unusual objects on the road ahead. In 2016 a Tesla operating in self-driving mode crashed into an overturned white truck trailer on the highway, and another Tesla in 2018 slammed into a parked fire truck. In both situations, the car’s sensors failed to ‘see’ the objects ahead. This notion of ‘seeing’ the road and approaching objects becomes even harder during bad weather. An autonomous vehicle uses multiple systems to drive itself, including GPS, traditional cameras, radar and LIDAR (a technology that bounces lasers off the surrounding environment). The LIDAR system can lose accuracy when operating through raindrops and snowflakes, and the car’s cameras can be blocked by fog or heavy snow. Potential solutions to these problems include creating overlapping, redundant systems on the car itself (in case one is inhibited), along with cars communicating with each other, and even embedding sensors in the pavement to feed data to the surrounding vehicles.(Read More…)

So I l’ve been getting into your ko crisis story lately (it all sounds rlly awesome btw) and i was curious - you’ve said in the tags in a previous ask that ash is comphet, so is that gonna play a major role in her character arc/journey in any way?
Yeah, the story basically covers her journey of redefining her identity as a queer Asian-American disabled woman in a sports-entertainment industry, which is a media landscape that specifically targets, exploits, and fetishizes people like her.
#ask me#itsthequeercryptid#i don't have much more to say on this cuz as of right now it's in like. early early development process and i'm not a queer woman so#i don't have much authority to say how i want this part of the story to go. even if it's my story i don't wanna set anything in stone yknow#but like. ashley's arc is realizing that she's been performing to appease people both in and out of her life. as both a daughter and a#pro boxer. and that she shouldn't have to force herself to be someone she's not. which in the story continuously hurts her#she doesn't need to validate her existence and find worthiness as a disabled and queer woman#especially to other people#one story beat i drafted is that ashley nearly gets s/a'd by a potential agent (keep in mind the project's inspired by psychological dramas#thrillers like utena and perfect blue) and it's one of the first big moments that causes her to have a crisis of identity#growing less and less comfortable in her skin - both organic and nonorganic - as she realizes how her body is perceived/ exploited/#/objectified as a vehicle for inflicting and absorbing violence. both physical and sexual. especially by men#and near the end of the story the beat is reflected/flipped when she comes together with noora and it's gentle and intimate#but again this is all very iffy. i'm not sure how appropriate this would be as a male writer.#i'm waiting to work with other writers who are more knowledgable on this before moving forward with anything

I bought her a car. She doesn't drive, but I thought she needed another outlet for some of that Terrier Spice.

I adore adore ADORE the Jedi Apprentice series don’t get me wrong (got some of my fav guys in there!! I use it for fic all the time!!) but mAN did it skew fandom’s view of the Jedi and Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan in general. Like Star Wars is very much pick-and-choose in regards to canon what with Disney, etc. but aaaaaa when things like “aging out” of the Order are used as if they’re canon when they aren’t,,,
_(:3」z)_
Idk I get the appeal of capitalizing on all the ANGST (I love angst!!) but when people use it to criticize the actual Canon Jedi Order it makes me So Sad cause like..they’re viewing canon from a fandom lens. And again, fandom lenses are fun!! And can be extremely informative and awesome! And sometimes fanon is better than canon!! But it’s just aahdhsjsj pls use critical thinking skills and learn to differentiate between your own readings and reality I guess?? lol sorry just feeling some feels and having a lot of trouble finding really good fics that don’t shit on the Jedi :///

Thank you so much for answering my question! I'm kinda new to fanfiction (not that I didnt know it existed but I literally have never seen or engaged with any until like a month ago lol) and so I just wanted to get your perspective on something I dont really understand yet. I'm autistic so I guess sometimes it's just hard for me to see/imagine characters as anything but how they are in canon, but I understand that it would be totally boring to write fanfic that only follows canon! I kinda see fanfic as that writers version of the character, like that's your specific version of Dabi and other writers have their versions of Dabi and maybe they're completely different 🤔 and I guess in my head it made more sense to me to just make a new character to make them exactly how you want and then you wouldn't have to worry about canon at all lol (because my mind wont let me see characters differently sometimes) but I get it now that you explained :) so if you dont mind me asking in your au's what happened differently in dabi/ touyas life to make him a sexual person? In canon I dont really see Dabi as a sexual person like he couldn't be bothered with relationships or anything sexual, like I almost see him as being asexual. So what kind of changed for him in your au's to make him more sexual and willing to have relationships? And thanks again for taking the time to explain for me, I really appreciate it 😊💕
hello again!! c: oh i’m glad i could help! <3 i mean, ultimately, just like all other fiction, it’s all personal preference. some people only like to read in-canon fic and some people only like to read AUs and some people like both, etc etc etc and it’s all totally and completely fine! i think you seeing fanfic as that specific writer’s version of a character/characters makes complete sense and, in a way, is also true—we are each expressing our own interpretations of him! so i absolutely get where you’re coming from there c: and i think your reasoning for being confused makes sense, too!
oh that’s a good question! unfortunately, i don’t have an answer for you, though, because i personally have always interpreted canon dabi as someone who would use casual sex (and drugs!) to try (and fail) to fill the gaping void in his chest. it is 100% fine if you disagree with me, and i will always encourage anyone to interpret any character however they’d like to. the beauty with art and fiction is that there’s technically no wrong answer to a lot of this stuff—if you personally see dabi as someone who is asexual, then he is asexual! if i see him as a sexual being, then he is a sexual being! we can have our own conflicting views on him and who he is, because he isn’t real, and he can be whoever we want him to be. does that make sense? let me know if you have any other questions or something seems unclear and i will try my best to further explain myself! <3

imo personally just for me. i do not feel this emotional aversion to likes that artists on this platform purportedly have. and this is a perspective very informed by my having had the capacity, in years past, to log off from social media for an extended period and just make things for myself and my loved ones. theres an element of privilege in that, that its not my livelihood rn, sure.
but i honestly think anyone with the ability to do so should periodically make a couple things just for themself, just to reacquaint with the feeling of having created something. like, dont post them. it doesnt matter what numbers would show up next to them. fully experience the process of creation itself, stripped from any external meanings or emotions ascribed to it by adding public perception into the mix. ultimately the skills you cultivate belong to you. every skill you have belongs to you. do you feel like you own your skills? thats something im working on.
giving any sort of advice or soapboxing about this scans as really self-important to me, so like grain of salt obviously, im one guy. and unplugging the way that i did (that is, out of avoidance/anxiety) back in like ~2017-2019 or whenever it was was Not good for me overall! but i think it did force me to take ownership of my artistic skillset as a thing i am growing like a plant, pruning and overseeing as needed, a thing with inherent value completely irrespective of what the socmed machine would like to make of it

i simply disagree with the idea that simplifying "reading stories / watching shows / listening to podcasts / looking at art" into "consuming content" is disrespectful in any way or symbolic of any meaning other than "language simplifies itself"

So I talked to my trauma therapist recently about how some of my most substantial mental improvements happened when I imagined what my favorite fictional characters would say to me when I was stuck in particularly bad spiral. I told her that Lord Shaxx replaced my mother's cruel voice in my head when I fell short of expectations, giving me new perspective on failures and self-inprovement through conviction and effort.
I told her through clenched teeth how embarrassed I was that the only reason I was able to gain weight and begin healing from my ED(ana) was because Halsin Silverbough would sit beside me in my head and gently push the bowl of soup into my hands and remind me that love is a more potent cure and catalyst for change that hate ever could be.
I remember her kind laughter, her large glasses falling down her small nose as she beamed at me with so much compassion.
"Who ever said that heroes needed to be flesh and blood? There are no hard rules that say personal epiphanies have to come from textbooks or religious texts or real people.
Healing, wherever the inspiration is born, is real regardless."
And that shit fundamentally changed me. Before we closed the session, she offered one last bit of wisdom:
"You know, change and healing only happens when we want it to. When you're open and receptive to that change, inspiration can come from anywhere. You've come so far already, and I'm proud of you."
Just wanted to share this with the hopes that it will help someone out there as much as it helped me. So yeah. Play your favorite games, read your favorite books, watch your favorite shows. Positive healing and growth happens no matter the source. Have fun.

Now that I am officially a few days into being 25(*🥳*), I am even more worried about mold exposure and my ROTH IRA account (nonexistent but substantial in my mind's mind). Nobody warns you that Ubran Outfitters is no longer as appealing once your frontal lobe has developed, and you can no longer use its development stage as an excuse for poor financial choices

My older sister gave me some really good advice when I was first learning how to drive and would feel stressed or anxious when I'm driving slower than someone behind me on a one-lane street, or when there's someone waiting on me to make a right turn:
Nobody can make you do anything when you're in a car. They can get impatient or annoyed or even honk at you, but the chances of them getting out and berating you is slim to none. And even then, they can't make you move until you feel safe and ready to.
So for anyone with social anxiety who feels awful whenever they're "underperforming" on the road and holding other people up: your safety matters more than their convenience. If you don't feel safe or comfortable, you are not obligated to put your car into motion, even when pressured. You are not being selfish, you are being responsible. If you can easily get out of the way of others, do so. If you can't, fuck them for honking at you for driving at a safe speed, or making sure there's no oncoming traffic before merging or turning right.
I am BEGGING younger drivers. drive carefully. give yourself room. for fuck's sake use your turn signals and don't fucking weave thru traffic. this is not a video game, this is real life and if you get into an accident, you could get killed or kill someone else VERY easily
