✨Valar and Valier series (late 2000s)✨ - 🌟Varda Elentári🌟 and 👻Námo Mandos👻. Featuring the final paintings, plus some initial sketches. Some years ago I started a 'Valar and Valier' project in which I took an existing painting/drawing as reference/inspiration to draw/paint one of the Valar. So far, I've done Varda, Yavanna, Nienna, Mandos and Aulë, and I also have some sketches of Nessa, Vána and Estë. Hope to get back to this project sometime! . I now prefer to headcanon Varda as raven-haired or white-haired and dressed in darker colours such as deep azure as well as white and gold, I think it fits the Universe theme more. I also favour non-Caucasian headcanons, such as her taking an East Asian, Egyptian or Middle-Eastern ethnicity in her form. And canonically, the Valier and Valar can technically take any form they like regarding ethnicity, appearance and such, so there’s not even an in-universe rule against having a myriad of ethnicities amid the Valar and Maiar 👌
.
🌟 VARDA 🌟
🎨Media: Graphite, metallic pens, colour pencils, watercolours, metallic silver and gold gouache. The porportions are not quite right in the finished painting, the arm is too long and so on, but I really like how the head and the metallic paints turned out. . ✨References: The head for the finished painting is a direct inspiration of Alan Lee's Lady of the Lake. The initial sketch is original, the other Varda sketch and the hand studies are study-copies
👻 MANDOS 👻
. 🎨Media: Graphite, gouache on black cardboard. I quite like how the mantle turned out, not so happy with the shape or shading of the hands, but ah well xD. . ✨References: An illustration of mage Gwydion from The Mabonogion by Roger Garland, from a book of Celtic myths

Varda Elentári x “L’Étoile Polaire”- Alphonse Mucha
Varda, Queen of the Valar, Lady of the Stars. She was the most beautiful of all the Valar. The Elves loved her the most of all the gods because of her creation of the stars.

who is an underappreciated/little talked about oc of yours that you would like to get more attention? (And feel free to talk about them!)
What a lovely question, thank you Anon! <3
I am lucky enough to have such supportive friends that my OCs are reasonably well-supported. If some of them don't get enough attention, it's because I'm the one who doesn't talk/write about them enough!
I would say that it is my version of Thranduil's wife and mother to Legolas and his brothers, Elvenqueen Maereth, whom I hope more of my readers come to know and love as I do. She is to me what Lúthien, Varda Elentári, or Galadriel were to Professor Tolkien: my vision of a perfect woman. But more than "perfect", someone wholly good and kind, full of love, and worthy of admiration. For that reason, I think a part of me will always worry that readers would criticize her as a "Mary Sue" (ugh that word), which holds me back from singing her praises as much as I would wish to.
Furthermore, every Thranduil or Legolas fic writer has their own version or ideas of the Elvenqueen, so I can understand why some readers would rather keep to their preferred visions. Therefore Maereth remains my extra-personal, special blorbo OC. I am deeply appreciative of anyone who shows interest in her.
I collected headcanons specific to her here: Maereth Headcanons.
If I could recommend one fic that (so far) best demonstrates her best qualities, it would be "The Broken Shield", which is surprisingly a Thorin-centric fic! But this story highlights key aspects of her character that I love best:
How she was a lifelong ally and friend to the Dwarven race, particularly the Line of Durin.
How she continued to work and fight against evil till the end, even after centuries of loss and suffering and heartbreak (sons dying, kingdom collapsing, etc.).
How she took an active role in ruling the kingdom alongside her husband, even in making critical decisions.
How deeply Thranduil loved her, so much that he could never replace her with another.
Thank you again for the Ask, Anon! I almost never talk about Maereth unless encouraged, so I appreciate this chance. :)

TOLKIEN LADIES: Varda Elentári
With Manwë dwells Varda, Lady of the Stars, who knows all the regions of Eä. Too great is her beauty to be declared in the words of Men or of Elves; for the light of Ilúvatar lives still in her face. In light is her power and her joy. Out of the deeps of Eä she came to the aid of Manwë; for Melkor she knew from before the making of the Music and rejected him, and he hated her, and feared her more than all others whom Eru made. Of all the Great Ones who dwell in this world the Elves hold Varda most in reverence and love. Elbereth they name her, and they call upon her name out of the shadows of Middle-earth, and uplift it in song at the rising of the stars.

I mean, why didn't the thing burn the Dwarves who killed Þingollo for it? Or Beren and Dior, who killed the Dwarves for it? Neither of those were self-defense.
“And Varda Hallowed the Silmarils, so that thereafter no mortal flesh, nor hands unclean, nor anything of evil will might touch them.”
*This can be interpreted broadly. Here I include deaths of justice and of self defense (e.g. Maglor’s slaying of Uldor).

Galadriel's Lament (Clamavi De Profundis version)
Namárië

English Translation Ah! like gold fall the leaves in the wind, long years numberless as the wings of trees! The years have passed like swift draughts of the sweet mead in lofty halls beyond the West, beneath the blue vaults of Varda wherein the stars tremble in the song of her voice, holy and queenly.
Who now shall refill the cup for me?
For now the Kindler, Varda, the Queen of the Stars, from Mount Everwhite has uplifted her hands like clouds, and all paths are drowned deep in shadow; and out of a grey country darkness lies on the foaming waves between us, and mist covers the jewels of Calacirya for ever. Now lost, lost to those from the East is Valimar!
Farewell! Maybe thou shalt find Valimar. Maybe even thou shalt find it. Farewell!

The Valar, but make them Egyptian
Varda Elentári -  as Nut, Egyptian goddess of the sky, vault of the heavens, often drawn arched over the Earth god, Neb.
Manwë - as Horus, most notably god of kingship, healing, protection, the sun and the sky.
Aulë - as Ptah, creator-god and maker of things, a patron of craftsmen, especially sculptors
Yavanna - as Taweret, goddess of fertility, rejuvenation, and protection.
Mandos - as Anubis, god of funerary rites, protector of graves, and guide to the underworld.
Nienna - as Nephthys, goddess of grief, mourning, darkness, temple service, magic, and embalming.
Ulmo -  as represented by two wedjat eyes resting in the water. The wedjet eye is a symbol that represents protection and healing -- and Tolkien makes a point of telling us that Ulmo keeps watch over all the comings and goings in Arda.
Oromë - as Amun, “The Hidden One”, creator of animals, patron of hunters.
Melkor - (skulking beyond the wings (doors) of night) as Set, god of deserts, storms, disorder, and violence.
The file’s huge so feel free to click/zoom. Some more closeups under the cut! I’ve had this brain worm in my brain for a while ever since reading more up on the heirarchy of the Valar and discovering that, conveniently, there are eight “exalted ones” + melkor, making nine, like the Egyptian Ennead. Though unfortunately I couldn’t slap them all neatly into Ennead slots, I did really enjoy linking them to their Egyptian ‘counterparts’, if you will. :)
Tumblr media
+ Orome focus because he deserves it, plus the reference used for his section: Ramses II (cosplaying as Amun bc all the Pharoahs did).

I like the idea of Nienna as a cleansing agent.
Edit: I didn't realize it until I posted it, but I made Nienna out to be a soap.
I won't write a fic with it right now (other priorities), but a possibility for consideration of fanfic writers:
Earendil's Silmaril wouldn't burn (at least some) Feanorians, and if M&M went with Eonwe, they could end up with non-burning Silmarils too
And that's keeping with the canon of "Varda hallowed the gems" and "the Feanorians were burned because kinslayings". How? See below the cut (long-ish)
So, consider: Varda hallows the Silmarills.
Melkor Morgoth steals them. He undoubtedly corrupts them in some way, either on purpose or just by having them and claiming them as his etc, and his general nature. Yes, it is in my opinion possible to corrupt the Silmarils, Varda's power isn't this much greater than his. They are still mostly Varda-aligned, but there's a taint.
So, when the Silmaril returns to the Valar, someone has to "repair" it. Varda? No. Do we ever hear of Varda cleansing things? She keeps pure what is pure, but she cannot revert the taint. She is the uncorrupted, the never-corrupted purity. She can't. It now burns her too (not permanently of course, but it hurts).
Nienna. Of course it is Nienna who can heal the gem. But it is different afterwards. It doesn't burn evil, if the evil is repentant. It pours onto the evil person a wave of sorrow, and regret and healthy grief instead. Or at least it would, if somehow it got into contact with someone fitting the criteria. (It burns those who don't want the grief. Still burns them well enough)
And of course if M&M went with Eonwe, those Silmarils would be healed too. Whether or not they would be given to them is open to discussion, but we're talking about a situation where Nienna has a strong negotiating position (she's needed to fix the gems) so there is a real possibility.
Also, in this case, giving them to M&M would actually be a good idea, because they would either a) get burned anyway and go do something in despair, or b) reevaluate their life choices and possibly be able and willing to give the gems back without any bad consequences.
And maybe convince Feanor and we would have an end of the world or something? Depending on your canon. I don't like the Ctrl+Z end-of-the-world, but "repairing the trees" seems to fit with "yeeting Morgoth out" as a soft end-of-the-world some kind of positive milestone.
Also, why didn't Eonwe tell M&M that it's a thing? Because it's Eonwe. The ability to understand how the Eruhini work is rare among the Ainur. And he's a general not a therapist. And Olorin want there to give him advice, or even wouldn't get this idea too, as he was still young and inexperienced. Sometimes the Ainur just have the social skills of a carrot.
