The reggae pioneer and record producer Jah Shaka, who has died suddenly in his late 60s, was a giant of the British sound system scene. In a career that lasted more than 55 years, he transformed the sound system landscape with a distinctive and idiosyncratic style, eschewing the dominant trends to focus exclusively on contemporary reggae that was spiritually uplifting and politically relevant, presenting the music as a means of inspiration and empowerment for the disenfranchised and oppressed.
At the many dances he held in diverse underground spaces, playing on an ancient and archaic Garrard turntable in a trance-like state, Shaka would chant messages of encouragement as well as exhortations of transcendent devotion to Rastafari, adding custom-built effects and live percussive elements to increase the dramatic tension.
Through his masterful use of components such as a pre-amp, a syndrum and a homemade siren box, he made the sessions visceral and immersive, boosting the subsonic bass frequencies at regular intervals to create a transportive and transformative experience. He reinforced this shamanistic persona by not revealing his given name or other details of his personal life.
An integral part of the black community of his home base in Lewisham, south-east London, during the late 1970s, Shaka deployed a sonic wizardry that made a dramatic impact on the post-punk music of Public Image Limited and the Slits, whose members were then among the few white attendees of his dances. Broader audiences became aware of his importance when he appeared in Franco Rosso’s evocative 1980 urban drama film Babylon, playing himself at a south London sound system session as the action draws to a climax.
Jamaican reggae subsequently underwent dramatic changes during the mid-80s as the dancehall style came to the fore, its output largely preoccupied with lasciviousness, violence and frivolity. British sound systems inevitably embraced the new style, but Shaka opted to become a lone voice in the wilderness that kept the roots reggae flame burning, advancing an up-tempo homegrown variant that became known as UK Steppers.
With a backing band he dubbed the Fasimbas after a local activist group established in response to the discriminatory treatment of black children in the British school system, from 1980 Shaka also produced original music with upcoming unknowns such as African Princess and Sister Audrey, as well as self-produced work.
He went on to produce reggae vocalists such as Bim Sherman, Johnny Clarke, the Twinkle Brothers, Max Romeo and Horace Andy, and released an impressive series of dub albums, including collaborative works with Aswad and Mad Professor. In the same period he ran a three-storey community hub in New Cross, known as the Culture Shop, which acted as a focal point for local black youth and housed a record store, a Caribbean food outlet and a Rastafari-oriented hair salon.
Although his record productions did not achieve much mainstream success, they were consistently popular with his core audience, and, more importantly, the uniqueness of his sound system would ultimately inspire acolytes such as Iration Steppas and Zion Train, as well as various sound system operators across the world.
Shaka spent his infant years in rural Clarendon, south Jamaica, before his parents moved the family to the UK in 1956 in search of betterment. They settled in south-east London, and it was while attending Samuel Pepys comprehensive school that he began an apprenticeship on the local soul sound system Freddie Cloudburst, beginning in 1968 as a “box boy”, helping to transport and set up the speaker boxes.
Later he ensured that the amplifiers and speakers were functioning properly, and finally became the resident selector to showcase work by Nina Simone, the Temptations, the Drifters, Diana Ross and other Motown acts. Then, after being inspired by activists such as Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X and Angela Davis, as well as his overarching Rastafari faith, he formed his own sound system in 1970, which he named Jah Shaka after the Zulu king.
Armed with exclusive dubplates and a powerfully commanding presence on the microphone, Shaka soon began building a name on the sound system underground, triumphing at many a sound clash. But along with the accolades came tensions with the police, who raided a dance he held in Brockley, south-east London, in 1975, beating attendees and damaging his equipment.
Undaunted, Shaka established a residency at Phebes nightclub in Stoke Newington, north London, in the late 70s, followed by another at Club Noreik in Tottenham, and was crowned the top sound system at the Black Echoes reggae awards in 1980 and 1981. His audience widened during the 90s, when he enjoyed a popular residency at the Rocket, adjoining the University of North London (now London Metropolitan University).
Shaka made his first pilgrimage to the African continent in 1984, and established the Jah Shaka Foundation in Ghana in 1992 to distribute medical supplies, library books and other materials to schools and medical clinics. He also undertook charitable works in Ethiopia, Jamaica and Kenya.
His extensive touring schedule took him throughout Europe and to Japan, Africa, Mexico and Peru. He became a regular festival headliner while mentoring his son, known as Young Warrior, who became a leading sound system practitioner and record producer in his own right.
Noted for his stamina and for presiding over all-night sessions without a break, Shaka continued to command large audiences at events in the UK and abroad.
He is survived by his extended family.

Inside A Hypnotherapy Session: Engaging Subconscious Mind To Create Transformation
A hypnotic state is a state of trance in which the body relaxes, and the mind becomes hyperfocused. This allows the conscious mind to be put at peace so that the subconscious mind is accessed. A hypnotic state is a safe way of creating transformation and a natural way of being. We go in and out of trance naturally multiple times a day, the two most common instances being when we fall asleep and when we wake up.
Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that uses hypnosis in order to bypass conscious thinking and go directly to the root of behaviors, which is usually hidden from our awareness. It is a non-invasive and safe way of creating positive changes and life’s transformations.
In this article, we’ll look at a typical hypnotherapy session and review different therapeutic techniques and benefits of hypnotherapy.
A hypnotherapy session
The session begins with the client and hypnotherapist discussing the desired outcomes and reviewing any relevant history. Then a trance state is induced for the client so that the hypnotherapist can work directly with the subconscious part of the client’s mind, where all the long-held beliefs and reasons for behavior reside.
The state of comfort and relaxation allows to put the person’s conscious mind at ease, thus opening the door to the deeper part of the psyche. The hypnotherapist allows the client to release limiting beliefs, let go of stifling emotions, shift perspective, expand awareness, and experience uplifting emotions or even practice new helpful behaviors.
This work can be done in a “paternal” way – with direct commands (for example, “Every time you experience X, you will do Y”) or in a “maternal” way – with gentle suggestions (for example, “Every time you experience X, you may feel the desire to do Y”). Most hypnotherapists use a combination of both approaches.
At the end of hypnosis, the client is brought back to a fully conscious state. Regardless of the issues being addressed, at this point, people generally feel more relaxed and at peace.
Issues that can be addressed with hypnosis
Hypnosis can help with a variety of issues, from improving mental and emotional state (dealing with negative thoughts and emotions ) to changing addictive behaviors (stopping smoking) to finding oneself (improving self-esteem, finding joy, etc.) to improving one’s physical well-being (managing pain, improving performance, etc.). With the help of an experienced hypnotherapist,  hypnosis can make a great difference in dealing with many issues. Here are just a few of them:
Stress
Anxiety
Sleep problems
Sexual problems
Smoking
Fears and phobias
Chronic pain
Physical recovery
Thumb sucking
Panic attacks
Obesity
Benefits of hypnotherapy
Below are some of the ways in which hypnotherapy can be beneficial:
Reduce Stress and Anxiety: Hypnotherapy can reduce anxiety and stress by helping clients see things in a new light and develop effective ways of releasing tension and staying focused in the present moment.
Increase Self-Confidence: Hypnotherapy can help people connect with their inner strength and wisdom and become more confident in their abilities. Clients can develop more empowered and assertive behaviors.
Improve Self-Esteem: Hypnotherapy can allow people to develop a more positive self-image, leading to improved self-esteem and greater self-acceptance.
Overcome Habits: Hypnotherapy can be very helpful in changing behaviors and habits that no longer serve the person.  These include smoking, drinking, unhealthy eating, nail-biting, etc. Through hypnotherapy, clients are helped to reduce triggers that cause them to engage in these habits and find positive replacement behaviors.
Enhance Sports Performance: Many athletes use hypnotherapy to improve their performance and achieve their goals. Hypnotherapy allows clients to “practice” their target performance in their minds. Hypnotherapy can also help clients increase focus, reduce distractions, and build mental resilience.
Relieve Pain: Hypnotherapy can be effective at reducing pain by shifting the mind’s focus and helping the body relax and become desensitized to the discomfort. Hypnosis is helpful not only for reducing pain experienced during recovery but also for chronic pain.
Improve Sleep Quality: Hypnotherapy is an effective way to improve sleep quality. It helps individuals relax and let go of any negative thoughts or worries that may prevent them from sleeping.
Techniques Used for Hypnotherapy
Here are some of the techniques used in hypnotherapy:
Relaxation: Hypnotherapists use relaxation techniques to help clients go into a trance or when helping them deal with stress.
Visualization: Visualization is used to help clients experience the release and clearing of outdated beliefs, emotions, and behaviors, as well as to practice and try on new helpful experiences.
Suggestion: Hypnotic suggestions are instructions delivered to the subconscious mind, which, once accepted by the client, can begin to align subconscious thinking with the client’s conscious wishes and help to bring about the desired outcomes.
Storytelling: During hypnosis, the hypnotherapist may tell a story to the client instead of providing direct suggestions. Storytelling and the use of metaphors allow the hypnotherapist to shift the client’s perspective in a non-threatening way, increasing the likelihood that the subconscious mind will accept the suggestions.
Age regression: During a session, the client may be taken to a younger age to gain a greater understanding of the events, shift emotions at that time, and help comfort and protect the younger self that was going through a traumatic event.
Reframing: Hypnotherapists help clients shift their perspectives and find more effective ways of thinking. Reframing allows clients to “frame” old issues in a new way.
Post-hypnotic suggestion: These suggestions are given by the hypnotherapist before bringing the client out of hypnosis. They are meant to be carried out after the session has ended, such as not engaging in a particular behavior or feeling a certain positive emotion.
Guided Imagery: Guided imagery is used by hypnotherapists for a variety of purposes. It is especially useful in helping clients explore options when they feel stuck, test out alternative solutions, connect with internal wisdom, and let go of things they are ready to release.
While hypnosis is often misunderstood, and the process of hypnotherapy is often thought to be a mystery, its potential for unlocking powerful insights and creating powerful transformations has been demonstrated time and time again. For people who are ready to create positive change, hypnotherapy can open new doors to self-discovery and well-being.

Kiteboarding Culture: Fashion, Music, and Lifestyle Trends
Fashion and style have always significantly shaped the culture of various sports and outdoor activities. Kiteboarding, a thrilling water sport that combines elements of surfing, wakeboarding, and paragliding, is no exception. Alongside its adrenaline-fueled action on the waves, it has developed its unique fashion, music, and lifestyle trends contributing to its vibrant and dynamic community.
Tumblr media
Fashion
Fashion in the kiteboardingworld reflects the sport's adventurous spirit and love for the outdoors. Kiteboarders often embrace a laid-back and casual style, blending functionality with individual expression.
Technical kiteboarding gear is essential, as it needs to withstand the rigours of water, wind, and sand. Wetsuits, board shorts, rash guards, and neoprene booties are popular for riders, ensuring protection and comfort during intense sessions.
Brands like Kiteline, specialising in these gear, offer a wide range of apparel that combines high-performance materials with eye-catching designs, allowing riders to showcase their style on and off the water.
Music
The community has also influenced music trends accompanying the sport's energetic atmosphere. Electronic dance music (EDM) and its subgenres, such as progressive house, trance, and dubstep, are often favored for their uplifting beats and pulsating rhythms.
These genres create an immersive experience, synchronizing riders' movements with the music's tempo. The associated events and festivals worldwide feature live DJs and performances, further enhancing the connection between the sport and music.
The electrifying soundtracks add excitement to the riding experience and create a sense of unity among riders, fostering a shared passion for kiteboarding and music.
Lifestyle
Beyond fashion and music, the sporthas evolved into a lifestyle that embodies freedom, adventure, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. Kiteboarders are often drawn to pristine coastlines, where the wind and waves beckon them to explore new horizons.
Many enthusiasts travel extensively, seeking the perfect conditions for their next kiteboardingsession. This nomadic lifestyle has given riders a strong sense of community.
Beaches and boarding hotspots become gathering points where friendships are forged, experiences are shared, and knowledge is exchanged. This community spirit extends beyond the water, creating lasting bonds that transcend borders and cultures.
Environment
Additionally, the lifestyle embraces sustainability and environmental consciousness. Kiteboarders deeply appreciate the oceans and the ecosystems they ride in. Many riders actively participate in beach cleanups, support environmental organisations, and promote eco-friendly practices.
Sustainable kiteboarding shops selling eco-friendly kites and boards made from recycled materials have gained popularity within the community. This eco-conscious approach reflects the boarding culture's dedication to preserving the natural environments that provide the perfect playground for their exhilarating sport.
Fusing fashion, music, and lifestyle within kiteboarding creates a dynamic subculture that celebrates individuality, adventure, and a deep connection to nature.
As riders harness the power of the wind and ride the waves, they express themselves through their choice of apparel, groove to the pulsating beats of EDM, and embrace a nomadic lifestyle that fosters a tight-knit community.
This unique culture continues to evolve, with fashion trends reflecting the sport's demands, music shaping the riding experience, and a shared commitment to environmental sustainability.
Kiteboarding is not merely a sport; it's a way of life that embodies the freedom to explore, express, and connect with the surrounding elements. Buy kiteboards for sale at Kiteline and give yourself a thrilling experience.

Miami Music Week 2022 Must-See Events
Miami Music Week is back and in full swing for Spring Break 2022. Even though the last two years of coordinating live events were upset by a global pandemic, the South Florida event life are alive and ready to make up for lost time under the tropical sun. But once you’re out of the airport and settled into your Airbnb, you may ask yourself or your crew, “What shows are worth checking out?”
Hopefully, this guide on what’s what during Miami Music Week 2022 will give you a clear idea of what to aim for and who to see. Even if you’re going to Ultra Music Festival all weekend long, there are plenty of after parties, pool parties, and boat shows you may want to have on your party-radar.
Here are some of the must-see events of Miami Music Week 2022:
Wednesday
Cat House Sessions Location: La Otra Wynwood Price: $25+ Reason To Go: It can sometimes be a bit tricky to navigate between different shows and the kind of house music they might play. At the Cat House Sessions, Brazilian duo Cat Dealers are going to curate electro house energy with the help of Henry Fong, Moguai, and more. For more info, check out this article.
E11EVEN: Benny Benassi, Dada Life, & Markus Schulz Location: E11EVEN Miami (Downtown Miami) Price: $30+ Reason To Go: If you had one day to go absolutely wild during Miami Music Week and it has to be a Wednesday, E11EVEN is the place to go. The nightclub/strip club staple is one of Miami’s most unique nightlife venues and they are teaming up with main stage legends Benny Benassi, Dada Life, and Markus Schulz. If it’s good enough for the Jersey Shore cast to party when they arrive in the 305, then it should cut for you and your crew.
RVDIOVCTIVE (Miami Music Week 2022) Location: 1-800 Lucky (Wynwood) Price: Free Reason To Go: This is a solid lineup of house and disco hitters. From veterans like Skream and Felix Da Housecat to recent stars like Tara Brooks and QRTR, you can vibe to the beat while grabbing some of South Florida’s low key best Asian cuisine.
Seth Troxler and Johnny Rock @ the Floyd Location: The Floyd (Downtown Miami) Price: $60+ Reason To Go: If you’re looking for a more intimate show in the same neighborhood, Seth Troxler and Johnny Rock at the Floyd can take of that. You can expect an eclectic collection of house music from one of the genre’s most revered artists.
Thursday
Black Coffee @ LIV Location: LIV (Miami Beach) Price: $75+ Reason To Go: If you’re looking to hang where Miami’s elite go to unwind and pop bottles, go to Miami Beach and make your way to the Fontainebleau hotel. There, LIV Nightclub will be hosting a solo performance from Black Coffee. His spiritually-accented house music is so impactful and unique that it deserves to be seen in one of the city’s most opulent venues.
Chemisty presents: Eric Prydz, Macro Plex, Innellea (live), Cristoph Location: RC Cola Plant (Wynwood) Price: SOLD OUT Reason To Go: It’s a general rule of thumb that if Eric Prydz is the headliner to any show, you should make some kind of plan to be at that show. It also helps that he’s got supporting sets from such cream of the crop talent.
CircoLoco Miami Location: Mana Wynwood Price: $70+ Reason To Go: The music label from video game industry’s Rockstar Games is debuting their very own showcase with a delectable selection of house music heavyweights. Palm Trax, Bedouin, Damian Lazarus, and DJ Tennis vs Carlita are bringing the same kind of electronic heat that inspires of
Enhanced Miami Location: Syndicate Wynwood Price: $50+ Reason To Go: If you’re looking for progressive house or trance, then make a stop here. Tritonal are headlining a substantial selection of artists making uplifting and hard-hitting tracks. Joining them are trance duo Gabriel & Dresden as well as Jaytech, Farius, and more.
Malaa and Enemies Location: TBA Price: SOLD OUT Reason To Go: I’ve had my ticket for this show since it was announced. Malaa’s Miami Music Week parties are always the talk of the town. This one should be no different as he enlists tech house bros Black V Neck and bass house staple Habstrakt. There’s also a set in there for the legendary Kaskade, making one of many stops he has for MMW.
Ophelia Showcase Location: MAPS Backlot (Wynwood) Price: $45+ Reason To Go: Very few artists sound and perform like Seven Lions. Ever since he started Ophelia Records, the label has been due to provide a proper showcase to flex their diverse roster. Artists like Kill The Noise, Trivecta, Dimibo, Last Heroes and more are on board to bridge the gap between dubstep, psytrance, and everything in between.
Friday
Brownies & Lemonade Location: Soho Studios (Wynwood) Price: $50+ Reason To Go: B&L always pack the names people want to see. This time around they have Louis the Child heading the event with support from Yung Bae and Whethan. There’s also some exclusive back-to-back performances that may never happen again. We’re talking Whipped Cream b2b Devault, Leotrix b2b Wavedash and Habstrakt b2b a yet to be revealed artist, that are all going to be pretty heavy. This show is sure to round out your needs for house, drum and bass, trap, future bass and more.

Christian Trance Music
Artist Against deception music is available now on Spotify, i Tunes, Amazon, i heart, and Pandora Radio. All streaming platforms. www.againstdeception.com
Christian Trance Music has been coined by some Christians to describe their style of Christian music that features peaceful, slow numbers that have been used during special prayer sessions. Christian Trance Music has been growing in popularity in recent years as Christian musicians increasingly turn to these types of quiet numbers to help them prepare for more difficult moments that occur when preaching. Christian Trance Music also tends to use sounds like waves, waterfalls, bells, or other natural sounds that give the listener a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere. This type of music also gives Christian worshipers time to speak in tongues, or declare their love of God while listening to the tunes. Many people enjoy using Christian Trance Music at home for relaxing purposes or to gain a closer connection with God.
Because Christian Trance Music tends to be sung in a lower tone than regular Christian songs, it can be more soothing and help you relax. Most Christian musicians who create Christian trance music are known as "trancesurgeons" due to the repetitive nature of their sound signatures. Christian Trance Music usually comes in a simple piano or guitar format but many Christian musicians have adapted their sound to come in other forms. Some Christian Trance Music can only be heard while standing still while others are sung and played at a normal singing speed.
One characteristic Christian trance music shares with other forms of Christian music is its tendency to use a low level of synthesizer tones that are notated using regular musical instruments. A good example of this is the sound of organ chords in traditional Christian hymns. While these can be extremely uplifting and inspiring in traditional worship, they lack the reach and impact of a synthesizer. The use of minimal lyrics also adds depth to Christian Trance Music as it leaves room for the free expression of emotions in the lyrics. This is very good to do when trying to communicate your deeper feelings about the messages of your hymns.
Another characteristic of Christian trance music is its heavy use of feedback. Although it is not uncommon in other forms of Christian music, Christian trance music tends to be especially heavy with its use of feedback. Some popular Christian artists who have made use of feedback in their worship songs include: Kaleidoscope and Allelujah Ministries among others. Christian musicians who are prominent in Christian Trance Music include: Kaleidoscope, Kevin Drury, Ra

Kat Tracks: 2020
This is the final post of my annual list of favorite tunes that I’ve been doing for seven whole years! 2020 was a shitty year for humanity, but at least the music was good. Check out my top twenty picks below the cut.
1: Chicane feat. Moya Brennan- Saltwater (Kevin de Vries Remix) Kicking off this absolute flaming garbage heap of a year is a nice new house-flavored remix of a beloved classic. I am, admittedly, a sucker for a good remix, especially one that respects the integrity of the original track.
2: Cold Blue- In Madness / Winter Gates Although the album Winter from which these singles come from was released in November of 2019, the extended versions were released this year. And really, who doesn’t love a good extended mix? In Madness channels much of the frenetic energy I felt while in lockdown.
3: Seven Lions- Find Another Way This five-track EP proves what a phenomenal producer Jeff is. Each collab sounds more amazing than the last, but my favorite track has to be the title one featuring April Bender.
4: Jorn van Deynhoven- The Future is Now Yet another title track from an artist album released in March. It’s a downtempo/ambient piece featuring a piano melody, which I am also a sucker for. The buildup is lovely and conveys a sense of hope.
5: Nikola Melnikov & Max Sorokin- Pandawa Something this nice could only have come from a premier label like Anjunadeep. It has a rather ethereal vibe that you can get lost in and let carry you away.
6: Conki & Mark Wilkinson- I’m on Fire Yes, I am still listening to indie-flavored house music on SoundCloud. What else would you listen to on that platform, future bass or something? Psh. This is a solid cover of the original by Bruce Springsteen.
7: Elysian- Moonchild This banger is a collaboration between the Anjuna family’s Ilan Bluestone and Maor Levi, with trance staple Emma Hewitt providing vocals. It’s solid electronica, but I’m also a fan of the trancier OTIOT remix that was released in December.
8: Paul van Dyk- Escape Reality A full chillout/ambient/downtempo remix album from the legendary PvD? Heckin’ yes please. This is very much the same flavor as Aly & Fila’s The Chillout album from 2015, which you should also listen to.
9: Stoby & G. Coulter feat. Liz Cirelli- Sun is High (Solarstone Vocal Retouch) Who’s ready for summer? This track makes me want to groove on a beach all day and into the night.
10: Hemstock & Jennings- Mirage of Hope (2020 Version) Mirage is my favorite track of this year. The title says it all, really, but the lyrics are even more fitting.
11: Crystal Skies feat. Luma- Hear Me Now I was surprised by the quality of this dnb release on Ophelia, Seven Lions’ label, but after their superb Constellations EP from last year, I gladly gave Crystal Skies my undivided attention once more.
12: 4 Strings- Take Me Away (BLR Remix) It’s another great remix of a classic, this time with distinct deep house flavor. 4 Strings’ Believe album was one of my first forays into the trance genre and I can’t say enough good things about how this version does justice to the original.
13: Tribu- Sweet Disposition This is an extremely good deep house cover of the original by The Temper Trap. Tribu is a new alias of Vijay & Sofia, who I’ve followed on SoundCloud for a few years. There seems to be two versions of this track with slightly different vocals. I prefer the one released in April to the second release in July.
14: Craig Connelly feat. Karina Ramage- Life Half Lived (Club Mix) If you have browsed any of these lists from previous years, you know how much I appreciate the production value of Craig Connelly. This trance track is a more uplifting version of the one found on his A Sharper Edge artist album.
15: Bunt feat. Clarence Coffee Jr.- Unbreakable I adore the Bunt guys with their “folk house” sound and have been keeping up with their releases on SoundCloud since the beginning. This track basically punches you in the face with self-affirmation and confidence.
16: JPL & Jason van Wyk feat. Cat Martin- Unsteady (Pierre Pienaar Remix) Going in the opposite direction now is a melancholy trance offering from Pierre Pienaar, featured on PvD’s Vonyc Sessions podcast. What I really love is the breakdown exactly halfway through featuring that unmistakable JPL sound but with an elevated edge.
17: Kristina Sky & Danny Stubbs feat. Evan Henzi- High Tide I was a big fan of Danny Stubbs’ previous work on Broken, also from the Perfecto label. This track was heavily promoted by Paul Oakenfold. I couldn’t help but fall for the breathy male vocals.
18: Tenth Planet- Ghosts (Darren Porter Remix) Rounding out the year of classic remixes is this banging new progressive trance offering. I like that Darren Porter parred everything back from the chorus so you can actually hear the lyrics, not to mention he preserved that iconic buildup.
19: Nurko feat. Devon Baldwin- Blindspot (Parts 1 & 2) So, this is really interesting. It’s two versions of the same song. Both are in the melodic dubstep genre yet they’re very different from each other. Part 1 is a bit more toned down and Part 2 is slightly more elevated. I also like the story being told. Give these a listen and see if you can pick a favorite.
20: Yula- Fade Away (Soul Version) I never listened to the original release of this track, but I kind of don’t want to because I’m afraid it’ll ruin the emotional resonance of this downtempo version.
Previous Lists: 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013

27 Nov 2019
Good evening reader, I trust this blog posting finds you well. Nothing much to report this end other than my initial hatred of all things Christmas as they start appearing from the middle of November like the ‘big day’ is right round the corner. December 1st hits and I’m full of the joys but I’m never in the festive mood during this two week period in November! More songs to enjoy, having been working some odd shifts at work I have found more time to listen to new music and these three I’m sharing today are some gems which have entered my musical zone of terror within the last few weeks. So....
Firstly this week we have the solo project of Kasabian guitarist and songwriter Serge Pizzorno, the name for this side project is The S.L.P, which are the initials to his full name Sergio Lorenzo Pizzorno. Are you keeping up so far? The debut single ‘Favourites’ from his self titled album was released in May this year and features female rapper Little Simz. I only recently heard the song I’m sharing after it appearing on my Spotify release radar thingamajig, and I instantly thought it to be new material from Kasabian. Despite being a solo project you certainly recognise the sound, the more electronic / trippy nature of a recent Kasabian album, away from the more rock inspired early albums. Having listened to the album is certainly explores the boundaries of that Kasabian sound and borrows a bit of influence from hip-hop, footage of live performances from Pizzorno himself show him swaggering around stage in a white vest and chains. Overall it is a very good album and Pizzorno has done his reputation as a gifted songwriter no harm at all which is not always the case in such instances where members of a group fly the nest and try their hand at going it alone. Besides ‘Favourites’ and the song I’m sharing, another great listen is the dance inspired single ‘Nobody Else’.
The S.L.P - ((trance)) - https://youtu.be/xSuDTcJy__c
Secondly this week we have the outrageous talents of Brittany Howard. I saw her on Later with Jools Holland and as a fan of the show I’m often doing other things and have it on in the background but was stopped dead in my tracks when I heard her music. She is best known as the lead singer of the American band Alabama Shakes but has just released her first solo album ‘Jaime’. Born in Alabama herself, her solo style certainly relies upon strong roots rock, blues and gospel all blended together with Howard’s exceptionally soulful voice. It is no surprise that reading reviews of the album it has received worldwide acclaim, one Guardian article I found described Howard’s efforts as a work of art, ‘artists often take on solo projects to get things out of their system before regrouping, but those things are rarely as beautiful as they are here.’ Alabama Shakes went on hiatus in 2018 to allow Howard to pursue her solo project and I’m very glad they did! Not only is the music uplifting and almost spiritual at times but the content of the songs draws upon personal experience with songs describing the racism her parents faced as a mixed-race couple in the deep South, her religion and forbidden love. The album itself takes it’s name from Howard’s sister who sadly passed away at a young age from a rare form of cancer but who taught Brittany how to write a song and she has put all those talents and more to good use. One of my favourite albums of the year. Enjoy this live session version of the song I’ve chosen to share.
Brittany Howard - He Loves Me - https://youtu.be/IVdqdMcT1yA
Finally this week and the electronic indie sounds of Metronomy. The band are from Devon and formed in 1999, their hobbies are combined harvesters, bobbing for apples and Scrumpy......sorry, standard Devon jibe I couldn’t resist. Their hobbies are, of course, making splendid music and in front man Joseph Mount they have one of the most talented around. Not only is he the driving force and lead singer and songwriter for the band but has also mixed and produced for the likes of Gorillaz, Klaxons and Lady Gaga to name but a few. The band themselves took a while to release their debut album which was released in 2006 titled ‘Pip Paine (Pay The £5000 You Owe) which was a very experimental electronic album which having heard a few tracks from is an acquired taste. I first came across the group myself after a friend pointed me in the direction of their single ‘The Bay’ taken from their third album, the 2011 ‘The English Riviera’. By this time it’s safe to say the band had found their sound and the album is awash with catchy electro rock with other singles such as ‘The Look’ making this an enjoyable album. I have recently learnt of their newest material and upon inspection there is one song I’ve heard which I cannot stop listening to. The latest album, their sixth, is entitled ‘Metronomy Forever’ and has been branded in the indietronica genre which to you and me means it contains a little less electro and slightly more rock from the pure electronica genre. Yet to get my teeth into the rest of the album but the song I’m sharing is very enjoyable and I also look forward to giving their other albums a listen over the coming days.
Metronomy - Insecurity - https://youtu.be/sQURcGezM2c
Songs done. Hope you enjoy the listening experience. I will be doing one last post for the year in three weeks time (18 Dec 2019) which will contain my highlights from the year and a few bonus tracks to give a listen to over the festive period! Ta ta for now, be lucky x
