Welcome to Lavender's and Carnation's, an MCYT Pride Month Zine!
Tumblr media
This is a zine dedicated to and honoring the queer CC's who have made an impact on this fandom and their fans! It'll feature art, fanfic, and stories about how openly queer CC's have helped people accept/become more comfortable in their identities! (Which, by the way- you don't have to be signed up for the zine to share your story! Anyone can submit one!)
So, how exactly is this zine going to work?
Lavender and Carnation's will feature art and writing like most zines, but it has a special addition to the usual- you can submit your own stories without having to be an official contributor!
Have a CC who helped you become more comfortable with your identity? A CC's character who's impacted you via their story, or has helped you through a rough time in your life? Share your story (anon or not) and you can have it featured in the zine, interspersed with art of that CC's characters and stories!
Okay, this sounds awesome! But wait, how do I apply? What's the criteria for a CC getting nominated for this event? What's the schedule?
Great questions! Here's a basic run-down of the event (along with links to fully explain it)
Applications
There are four roles you can apply for within this event;
Mod
Mod's will help manage the discord server, answer questions, and offer any assistance you may need while creating your piece!
Cover Artist
Cover artists will either be able to apply for the zine cover (which will be a full page spread all the CC's featured in the zine), or as a CC cover artist (which will be a full page spread of all of a CC's character's/relevant side characters)
The applications are open for two zine cover artists, and one artist per however many CC's end up in the zine.
Artist
Non-cover artists will be creating half/quarter page illustrations to be featured along side submitted stories! These drawings can feature the CC themself, a character they portray (alone or with friends!)
If applicable, they can also apply to do a full page drawing of a canon queer relationship with a CC's character in it. (This will only include relationships that are explicitly stated to be romantic/queerplatonic. Examples of this are Milo and Scott from Witchcraft SMP and Aismey and Guqqie from Area Unknown.)
Writer
Writer's can apply to create a piece of writing exploring/featuring a canonical queer character’s identity/relationships. This can feature headcanons for other characters, but please avoid gender-bending for ships (ie, making a M/F ship M/M or a F/F ship M/M!) or changing the canon identity of the CC’s character!
(More information for contributors and mods)
CC Nominations
CC's are nominated based on what the community wants! A Google form with be posted on January 25th where you can nominate your favourite CC's to be featured in this zine. If your CC gets 10 nominations, they'll be considered for the zine!
After that, if enough people sign on to create for your CC, they'll be featured on the zine!
(CC Nomination Requirements)
Event Schedule
The event officially begins on January 12th with an interest check!
CC Nominations and Mod applications open on January 25th and end on February 5th.
The discord server opens on February 8th, followed by Contributor applications opening on February 10th and closing on February 23rd.
Story submissions will be open from February 10th till March 10th!
(How do I submit my personal stories?)
(Official event schedule)
If you've made it this far, please reblog this post so that people who would be interested are able to see it! Thank you for your time, and I'm really excited to see this zine through!

Two beautiful photos of Tina taken in the late 90s/early2000s. Unknown exact date or photographer, but these photos come from her personal collection and were published in 2002 Cine.Zine.Zone magazine number 134.
Very special thanks to @74paris for sharing these gems 💜💜
Another photo from this very same shot can be found here.

ill be honest with you im personally uninspired and bored by ''male character... but hes a butch lesbian'' because i think it shows a lot in how people are avoidant of looking at content thats not as popular/indie content actually made by lesbians and instead just cling to the newest fad/fandom on the block and make the same boring ''what if this skinny cis guy was actually a skinny cis butch lesbian in a white unbuttoned t-shirt and big boobs'' and the crowd goes wild. and then we continue to lack lesbian media getting popular and we continue this trend until the heat death of the universe. i think im also mostly bored of this because for all the ''but make them butch lesbians'' ive seen not one of them looks like me or my butch friends. you know. chubby and fat. disabled. sick. etc. im bored. IM BORED!

2023 reads // twitter thread
The Battle Drum
sequel to The Final Strife, a queer Ghanian/Arabian high fantasy world where people are divided by blood colour
the nightly hurricanes are getting more deadly, and Sylah travels to unknown lands to discover the truth and find help
meanwhile Anoor is trying to manage her new political position while framed for a murder she didn’t commit
#The Battle Drum#aroaessidhe 2023 reads#okay I do feel similarly about this as I did the first one...really love a lot of what’s going on I just feel like some of the structure/plo#plot focus could b better#like the first one fell back on the generic competition framework which I felt was meh....this one does that a bit with murder mystery#it had a cool  in-universe summary of book 1#something about the politics/past/worldbuiling feels…I wanted some more connection or complexity or something?#or maybe i just expect more from adult fantasy#anoor's naivety got a little frustrating at time#like the murderer was pretty obvious#I love: cool new cities! glass city! MUSHROOM CITY#when sylah sees a camel and describes it in the most 'weird unknown fantasy creature' kind of way#I still find zines weirdly anachronistic.......when magazines don't exist in the world...#but I can give that a pass I guess#there's also an aroace side character (has some POV) who I have......mixed feelings about?#an interesting complex character but also. is SA'd for years before she finally decides t kill her husband#then becomes an antagonistic cult leader#I don't think that's INHERENTLY a bad thing; but idk; why was that a choice? maybe she'll be redeemed (for lack of a better word) next book#anyway all of these critiques are very much like. this has the potential to be in my favourite kind of books ever and doesn't QUITE reach my#expectations..........so like it is very good. I just ahhhhh want slightly more/different things#oh also jond and kitten was good. I still hate him for being the perpertrator of my Least Favourite Trope but. he has a baby kitten....#wait i should also mention the plot twist of who the person is is pretty good#didn't figure that one out#but going back through highlight notes i was like oh...there was clues...

My contribution:
Addicts also are often the people who need pain pills in the first place. That's often how they get addicted. It's a very hard situation, to find yourself reliant on something that both helps and hurts you- I speak from experience as someone prescribed to high opiates for my chronic health. Take your pills, because it's not noble to suffer and it's better to be alive and dependent then suffer in waiting because you are afraid. actually better to be dependent on pain pills than dead.
A lot of addiction can be a symptom, too. It's not a moral failing, and it might be a failing of something else: if you aren't getting any other help, it's no wonder people abuse the only thing that gives them relief. Look to addicts with sympathy, they are often the exact people you might try to divide them from
It is actually way better for 100 addicts to get their fix on pain pills than a single person in pain go without. I call this the "Torture is bad" principle. You should be able to get the good stuff forever after a single doctor's visit. If you're worried about addicts fund rehab centers and needle exchanges instead of torturing people.

Starship Kongo Fanzine [Japan] | Unknown artists & dates*
*Information on this zine is... well, almost nonexistent, but I still wanted to share these pages as an example of fan work outside of the US and UK. Star Trek knows no bounds! If anyone who happens upon this has additional information, I'd love to know more 🤍

What do you think makes your friends so magnetic?
It’s because they’re genuinely interesting, funny, well-rounded women. They’re not just people who you want to get to know better; they’re people you look up to and want to be. They’re put together, qualified, educated, and great to be around. They all have goals, they’re all motivated, and they’ve all had experiences that they’ve allowed to shape them for better or worse. They’re all confident in who they are, and they all have passion projects and interests that they’ve spent hours pouring themselves into.
Twilly has her travel blog, her zine, her poetry, her cooking, and her fascination with other cultures and ways of life. She’s rarely afraid of taking action or doing something new, and I’m proud to call her my bravest friend. She leaps at the chance to do new things, goes to parts unknown, and vibrancy and creativity are her life’s goals. She’s an amazing person to get to know.
Camilla speaks seven languages (not including English), has walked at Copenhagen Fashion Week, and is amazing with people. She’s always talking about interning for Condé Nast, how she’d style people, what she’s experienced, and how she’s honed her eye for aesthetics and design. I honestly believe that Camilla has the potential to become one of the best fashion editors and artistic directors of our generation.
Those are just two examples, but having a clear image of the sort of woman you’d like to be one day and doing what it takes to build your confidence and your personality, finding what makes life feel better for you (having passions and hobbies), and learning how to convey your emotions and converse with people are some of the steps you need to take. People are drawn to people who they are genuinely interested in; that’s always been the case and always will be. Part of making yourself interesting is being someone people want to hear more from, being able to speak about yourself without coming off as pompous, actively trying to engage with the world around you, and building quality relationships with more people.

I saw your post about ingram, and out of curiosity, is there some advantage to going through the whole self-publishing thing with retailers when you're just starting out? like I mean the way that fandom zines work is that they don't even bother going through ingram or amazon or whatever. they just set up a social media site (usually twitter) to gain followers, open preorders (usually 1-2 months in length) to generate the costs of printing upfront, and then sell anywhere from a few dozen to several hundred copies of their books (usually artbooks, but anthologies exist too). I've seen some zines generate over a thousand orders. they're kind of like pop-up shops, except for books. maybe the sales numbers aren't so impressive to a real author, but the profit generated is typically waaaay more than the $75+ apparently needed for Ingram Spark, so I still feel like new authors could benefit from this method too, especially if they just need some start-up cash to eventually move to ingram if they want to for subsequent runs of their book. I think authors would also have to set aside some of the pre-order money to buy an ISBN number to have printed on their book, and I'm not really sure what other differences there are, but I just wanted to ask about it in case there's some huge disadvantage I'm missing!
So, popup zines work well for some people, and I know some authors who kickstart their work successfully. But for a lot, it's just not feasible as a long-term stratedy. Or even as a means to get off the ground.
Fanzines succeed primarily because an existing fanbase is willing and ready to throw money at something they love. They’ve got a favorite writer or artist they want to support. Supporting all the others is just a happy by-product. They also take a HUGE amount of short-term but intense planning that just doesn’t always jive with how some of us work.
I, for one, would never offer to organize a fanzine. I’ll take part in them as a creator, but I’d rather throw myself off a cliff than subject myself to wrangling that many people and dealing with the legal logistics.
When it comes to authors doing anthologies, it'svery much the same. The success of the funding often hinges on having other big-name authors involved whose existing fans will prop up the project. Or having a huge marketing budget.
Most self-pub authors have zero marketing budget. I’m one of them, and I’m under no illusions that my work would not be as popular and self-sustaining as it is if I didn’t have a large Tumblr blog.
When I thank Tumblr in my forewards, I am utterly sincere. Tumblr brought fandom levels of enthusiasm to an unknown work and broke the Amazon algorithm so hard, that Amazon thought I was bot sniping my way to multiple #1 spots and froze my sales rankings.
That’s not the norm. And while I could probably kickstart my own work as an indie creator, that’s because I’ve put literal decades into building up a readership. I’ve been doing this since I was 16 and realized people thought I was funny. I didn’t know what to do with it or if I’d ever actually write anything, but it meant the groundwork was already there (thank you, past-me). I basically fell upward into my success by virtue of never being able to shut the fuck up and wanting to make people laugh. Clown instincts too strong.
New or first-time authors trying to sell their work without that will find it infinitely harder.
All of that aside, even if an unknown author somehow gets lucky and manages to fund their work, there’s still the question of shipping and distribution logistics. Are you shipping everything yourself? Better hope you’re able-bodied and have the time for it. (for reference, it took me months to ship out 300 patreon hardbacks because of my disabilites. It damaged my back and hands. I couldn’t type for several weeks after I was done.)
Are you going to sell primarily at conventions? Better hope you’re able-bodied, have the time and don’t have cripling anxiety about being in large groups...
Also, will selling a dozen to a few thousand copies in one burst be sustainable in the long run as a career? Not for me. Doing things via Ingram and Amazon means I earn a steady trickle of sales for the rest of my life provided the platforms remain and so long as I keep working and can generate interest in the series, not just when I have funds to pay for physical copies to sell. The one-time (in theory) cost of $75 to distribute through Ingram gets paid off pretty quick that way. And it doesn't require the same logistics as doing the popup/crowdfund.
Ultimately, it comes down to what you are capable of but also the type of work you’re doing. If you’ve got an extended network of fellow creatives who will back you or you’ve got a large following elsewhere, doing it like a popup might work for you.
If you’re an exhausted burnout who can’t fathom the short but intense amount of organization that sort of thing requires, not to mention doing it over and over and over... Ehhhhh. No thank you.

First sketch of the year. I don't know if I have any resolutions. I know I want to learn how to drive, at least. And have a table at an event or festival sometime to sell some art. I want to also make a zine!
It was a really rough year, but despite the hardship, I was able to do a lot of fun things. I started going to Saber Guild and TSL. I started going to sword fighting classes. I went to more art showings at the Tom house. I did a lot of fun things with my friends. I took some art chances, even if they didn't all work out. I got back into watercoloring more and been using my brush pens. And I think I've found my voice as an artist and the direction I want to go with my work.
The next few years are a big unknown, but I'm going to keep on going forward and living my truth and my life.
