two Bad History Takes don't make a Good History Take

right: throughout history, many non-European civilizations have had impressive technologies for their time periods, and this is often minimized by white supremacist interpretations of the past. just like their counterparts in Europe, they had a complex range of advancements and limitations given the materials around them, their worldviews, and the areas of technology on which their society placed a high priority

Actually, thinking about the Pokémon timeline a bit more, I feel like Gens 8 and 9 have to take place way after the other games, because like, the world feels very different in those games

For starters, the technology's vastly improved in these two games compared to the others. The Rotom Dex was like, a very new thing in Gen 7, but by Gen 8, Rotom phones are just a part of the typical experience, and they're used to do things like power bikes and such; Rotom tech has become far more advanced. Portable PC boxes are now a standard thing. There's far more expansion in things like sponsors, at least with how it pertains to the average starting Trainer

Not only that, but the Leagues feel completely different, like they've gone through a massive overhaul. The Gyms feel like a far bigger thing than in previous games, with the Galar one basically being a popular sporting event, with massive stadiums and crowds. Heck, you need a sponsor to join the Gym Challenge in the first place, and getting more sponsors is a thing normal for top tier League trainers like Leon. And while I'm not as familiar with Paldea's League (nor do I remember the entry process), it again feels far bigger and more elaborate than previous iterations, and "Champion" not simply being the strongest Trainer in the region, but a title one achieves by beating the Elite four and the Top Champion. I also wouldn't be surprised if paperwork and application was necessary to compete in Paldea's League either, I just don't remember

In Galar and Paldea, you can't just wake up one day and decide to do the Gyms, and you're going to be far more known for taking the challenge than in any other region, where the most recognition for it is in your badges themselves

Alola was the only one semi close to how the League is in the new games, but the Trial Challenge system was not invented by the Pokémon League, it's a long established Alolan tradition with their customs. The League was only just formed in Sun/Moon, and from what I can gather, it's only the Elite Four and Champion, and for people who've completed the Trial Challenge

So like, how far in the future from Sun/Moon, which mind you are themselves 20 years after Gens 1 and 3, and 17 years after Gens 2 and 4, are Sword/Shield and Scarlet/Violet? How has technology in the Pokémon world expanded so much? And what caused this restructuring of the Pokémon League and Gym Challenge system?

I mean I know IRL it's just because the developers wanted to expand the world of Pokémon from what they had before, and good on them for that. But I just want to know, what caused all these changes in-universe?

I like the thought of during red and greens trips to newer regions most younger ppl have very little idea who they are/don't care that much, but then their parents/anyone older see them they start losing their mind at The Kanto Champions especially anyone who's from Kanto but moved abroad...old gen sees charizard and thinks of red the living legend. New gen sees charizard and thinks of Leon the unbeatable champion...both are goats and honestly red is probably thankful he's recognized less as he gets older. Never liked the fame and attention. Green might be a tiny bit sad when he realizes that he's now considered Old to kids. He's not even middle aged but to a child he is ancient and from a different time in pokemon battling history.

(normally it's a surname, I've only seen it used as a first name once in a blue moon -- but also in the pokemon world it's pretty clear that naming conventions aren't the same lol)

Pokémon Abstract shoutout!

Have I mentioned I really like Pokémon Fan-Games? Because they’re better than the actual games. fight me.

Playing Abstract right now and I’m having a really fun time :) My favorite fakemon on my team are the ones above. The little bunny is way too overpowered and I love it so much.

I’ve been thinking about Drakovia (as you do) and I think the only way you can write it into our world without completely breaking modern history is making it AU Romania which hypothetically sides with the Allies early in WW2 and does not fall under Soviet occupation afterwards. With its status as one of the victors in WW2 and stronger ties with Western European countries, it maintains economic and political independence throughout the 20th century, and that's how the Thorne royal family survives up until modern times. 

Drakovian church is some variation of Orthodox Christianity. Drakovian language would be a romance language like Romanian (with a lot of Slavic vocabulary mixed in). The odd mix of Greek, Slavic and Latin names is explained by the diverse ethnic makeup of Drakovia and migration from neighbouring countries. Thorne is still an odd surname because 'thorn' is of Germanic origin, but Romanian surnames can end in e, and hypothetically there could probably be a word in Drakovian that just happens to sound alike.
