The house was surprisingly quiet this night, usually the human kid Aby and his adopted father Gaster would do late night research on the lab or use this shift as an opportunity to clean up the used lab equipment for the next day's round.
But this time things were a little bit different, as Aby has planned to host a sleep over at his house with his adopted sister Ember, with them convincing Gaster to take the night off and go spend some time with his old friend Asgore back in the Gardens, leaving the two kids alone for the night.
"Are you sure it's safe to come down here without your father around? I mean isn't this machines dangerous?" The girl asked as they both walked down the stairs and into the underground lab located under Aby and Gaster's house in the basement.

Aby rolled his eyes as he turned on the lights and started walking towards a huge ring-shaped machine in the middle of the room, connected from all sides by thick cables.
"Come Emby, I mess with this machines everyday, I would know if they were dangerous" He smirked and winked at her, who just sighed.
"Oh? Isn't your job just cleaning the beakers and cleaning the lab?" She teased him.
The boy opened his mouth to reply but then had an idea, quickly running towards the ring machine, crossing his arms and smiling pridefully.
"Would a simple cleaner boy know how to operate this...uuuuh..." He looked at the machine, trying to remember what it did.
Ember just crossed her arms and smirked, enjoying seeing his brother fumble his attempt to puff his ego.
"...You don't even know what this does, do you?"
Aby's face was flushed with embarrassment "Of course I do! I just uh...Forgot it's name! I will prove it!" Without thinking he pressed the big red button on the side of the machine, by now Ember was right beside him.
Nothing happened for a few minutes, to the point where both of them walked under the ring to see if any lights were turning on.
"...Does...this even work?" She asked knocking on the metal frame and scratching her head.
Suddenly the machine sprung to life, a portal big enough to swallow them whole appeared right where they stood as the two kids were transported somewhere completely different in less than a second.
This new place seemed to be the side of a wide river in the middle of a glacial area. The two were extremely confused, they could barely process what just happened because of how quick this whole event was.
"...where...are...we?" Aby asked shocked and confused.

Advancer Culture: Underground and Surface
Continuing our sharing of PerLa, here's more on the ill-fated Advancers. Colored text for ease of distinction.
The Advancers could easily be divided into those who lived and worked on the surface, and those who lived and worked underground.
Surface dwellers’ names were tied to their occupations, while subterranean dwellers employed more location-based names. (This latter group is where Drebyl derived their naming schemes, while the former inspired the Syrel’s names.) This means that surface Advancers were used to changing their names often, employing new titles with every shift in occupation, while those below the ground held their names close as a reminder of where they had come from, or somewhere special.
For example, something like "Wires Well, Neatly Binds" would have been a surface name for someone in charge of cable management, while "Ricochet from the Red River" would have been a subterranean individual with ties to an iron-rich waterway. These names were often self determined and/or given as a sign of respect and recognition.
Surface work was about as varied as you can imagine; construction, cooking, transportation and delivery, managing communications and information systems, agriculture, maintenance, etc. You get the idea, running a society.
Those who lived and worked underground mainly operated drills, harvested subterranean plants/fungi, monitored organisms for potential biotechnological applications, and constructed tunnels, stations, and dwellings. A subway network was in the works, but has long since decayed. Nowadays the reinforced tunnels are a convenient travel space for any creatures passing through.
Neither group was bound to their respective realm. An Advancer could have easily worked a few years underground and decided they liked it better up-top, and vice versa. A name change wasn't necessary to facilitate that.

Is internet a thing in your au?
As far as the idea of internet goes, the the Cross-Continental Transmit System enabled a rudimentary prototype of the concept, with towers connecting to each other, so information could travel between them. Relay stations in each city and beyond would also connect to the closest tower, essentially allowing an archaic(from our point of view) system of information transfer across continents.
Satellites aren't really a thing because dust doesn't work beyond a specific altitude and all technology uses dust.
Underground cables have been attempted but they have high failure rate due to underground Grimm (giant worms y'all) as well as erosion in the areas with higher Grimm density. High Grimm particle density tends to warp or blank signals of any kind.
Each bigger city has a local smaller network with the relay station connected to tower and thus to the world, allowing the share of information.
Towers connect to each other and to everything in range.
Relay stations connect to each other and to towers.
Personal devices like scrolls, TVs, radios, etc connect to relay stations or towers(as it's essentially a souped up relay station).
Personal devices close enough can communicate with each other acting as handheld transceivers.
So information could be transmitted from towers to local networks, but wanting to access or transmit to another tower could only be done at the tower.
That's mainly due to signal strength as a bigger newer device will punch through to weaker ones but not vice-versa. Hence if Weiss wanted to directly contact Atlas, she'd have to do it via the tower.
With Vale's tower being down, that whole system is no longer operational (and there's an actual reason why it requires all four towers to work).
Each bigger city essentially has it's own local "network" as communication entirely relies on relay stations connecting to each other now.
Connections between continents or locations further away from relay stations are outright impossible now.
With CCTS down, cities don't really have access to any of the networks and rely on the closest relay stations for communication. The communication involves physically sending information from one relay station to the other the way it would have been done pre-CCTS.
Any even smaller villages have zero communication with the outside now.
So, for example, the parts of City of Vale on the right bank of the river that remained intact can contact Patch and vice-versa as well as contacting the evacuation area housing the refugees - there's a relay station in the Upper-Class district and the evacuation area has a retrofitted relay from one of the fallen Atlas ships. However the only way to deliver or receive information from, for example, anywhere on the other side of Mt.Glenn would require someone actually travelling there and back again.
Same holds true for communication between Kingdoms as, by their very nature, there's quite a bit of distance between the population centers of each Kingdom. The only official channel for diplomacy and communication remaining after the system went offline is actual physical meetings between representatives.
Different Kingdoms face different issues too - places more centralized like Vale are more cut off from the smaller outposts and towns, while something like Mistral make use of the relay stations lining the logistics points between the four main cities, as well as the ones lining the railway network that has been built after the war.
So as of right now, after fall of beacon, there are local networks with no information flow between them and before it was more akin a bunch of closed off ARPANET-style systems interacting with each other.

Lore: The Shifting Wing Caravan
Life in the Shifting Expanse is vastly different from the clan's early days. Under constant paranoia of attacks from the Shade and falling back on Wind instincts to keep moving, Spelldancer led the clan as a caravan through the Charged Barrens. The desert being the most volatile and dangerous of the land, the Matriarch hoped the rolling lightning would naturally deter anything from following them. That said, the clan itself must survive the same hardships, and developed methods to do so.
The clan operates in two states: lairing and caravan. All dragons in the clan earn their keep by working in some way, but the way they work varies depending on the clan's state.
Lairing
The clan uses temporary lairs for shelter. The clan chooses to lair when the Shifting Expanse's storms are too severe to travel through, there are a high number of eggs incubating, or their scouts sense danger and need to hide. The ultimate goal of lairing is to give dragons a much needed rest and protect the dragons from attacks, as the lair will have only one exit, which is guarded.
These lairs are caves deep below the sands of the desert where the earth begins to harden, allowing for structure to form. The clan's lair building workers, known as the Carving Team, work quickly to construct caves to serve the entirety of the clan for lairing. The Carving Team is split into specialties by element: Earth dragons make up the Carvers, Lightning dragons make up the Grounders, and Fire dragons make up the Smiths. Carvers dig directly into the ground and use their Earth magic to shape it to their desires. Grounders maintain and run cables throughout the caves to provide electricity to power lights and other comforts. Smiths help construct metal beams and any forging needs the Carvers and Grounders need. Corycia (#61707542) leads the team and inspects their work across all work groups. Corycia also makes the final call on when the clan will lair, as she will not allow lairing to begin without finding a suitable location.
The Carving Team is widely respected in the clan, being the hardest working dragons who server the most basic need of everyone: shelter. When they finish, Carvers spend the rest of the lairing state resting, as their work is the most laborious. Grounders and Smiths, however, have other tasks to attend to, such as engineering and smithing respectively.
While lairing, other working dragons take the opportunity to craft. Artisans will create new goods from their supplies. These items will be sold later when the clan caravans. Some dragons' tasks have them tending to the population in order to maintain good mental health and morale. For example, there are lair decorators who are in charge of beautifying the lair, as living in underground caves for several months with limited surface time can be depressing. Relaxing areas are maintained, such as saunas and game rooms, and some dragons run events. Stylists maintain the coats of furred dragons to prevent overheating in the desert, and fire and ice dragons work in tandem to maintain comfortable temperatures throughout - though in some cases, some rooms are much hotter or colder to accomodate dragons whose element/grooming require such.
Dragons who wish to nest will often wait for lairing to do so, though this is not the case for every pair. The tasks of hatching eggs and rearing young are not the parents' job, however. The clan employs nannies that wrap eggs in metal coils, which are topped with clamps and can be hung from cables suspended from the ceiling. These coils run the natural electricity eminating from the eggs back over them to maintain a warm temperature. After hatching, the hatchling will be raised by the nannies.
Currently, Pajamas (#55529581) is the only nanny. As the task of corralling hatchlings can be overwhelming the more of them that there are, lairing is sometimes initiated at her request. (Note: in my canon, spirals are larger, so she is large enough to carry most hatchlings.)
Housing caverns give individuals and pairs their own privacy while also keeping living quarters nearby. Dragons can put in special requests for their units and the Carvers will note them and attempt to meet the dragons' needs the next time the lair is built.
After some time lairing, the clan will pack up and abandon the lair. The clan switches to caravaning when it's determined the coast is clear, or contrastly, leadership has determined staying in the current lair is no longer safe. Switching from lairing to caravaning is done very quickly; within a few hours of notifying all clanmates, they leave. Dragons need to be ready to leave as soon as possible, and any items not carryable must be left behind. Carvers will destroy the lair by causing cave-ins. Lairs are destroyed to help prevent aggressors from finding the remains and determining where the clan has been. Grounders and Smiths will do their best to collect their cables and support beams to carry with them for the next lair.
During lairing, dragons only leave the clan under special circumstances, or if they have a job that requires it. Hunter/Gatherers are allowed to leave at any time to stock the food supply, as is the War Party to maintain the safety and security of the clan.
Caravan
The caravan state is when the clan is traveling. The clan employs a team called the Spellshields; these are Arcane dragons with high mage proficiency that maintain protective shields at all times while exposed to the desert's topside. This prevents rogue electrical waves from running through the clan, which wouldn't affect the Lightning dragons too much, but could devastate other members of the clan. The shields also protect from harsh winds and sands buffeting them as they travel.
The Spellshields are not constantly maintaining the shields themselves. They use compact devices designed by Delwen (#54524815) to store their magic, which then generates the dome of pink magic over the clan. This allows the caravan to travel for months if needed without wearing down the Spellshields.
Dragons are expected to be able to carry their own possessions, but in the cases of dragons who have many items for their crafts, they may employ the help of Carriers. These are often Wind dragons who use their magic to lift heavy items along with the clan as they travel, but can also be large/built dragons who can simply handle the burden of the items when packed onto them. Due to their heavy loads, the clan mostly walks during caravan time, rather than flying through the storm. Maintaining spell shields would be too difficult during flight as well. Some dragons have built sled-like carts that can be pulled by large dragons, which give them a place to store their wares as well as act as a market stall when visitors come by.
When not directly traveling, dragons will hunker down in the sands, under the protective shields. During this time, they often run trade stalls in a bazaar. Dragons traveling through the expanse will often notice the large spell shields and stop in to rest from the storm, and many times they will trade. There are often dragons coming in and out of the clan because of this, and these visitors help maintain the caravan's livelihood by bringing new supplies and treasure in.
Artisans will trade for money and for supplies to make more of their craft. Making a profit is important, as it allows them to replenish their stock for their next sales, but also aquire necessities for their own lives and the lives of their fellow clanmates.
Any eggs that are laid during travel will be carried by large dragons wearing special harnesses. These harnesses allow the incubator coils to be clamped to the dragon, allowing for clawless carrying.
Dragons who wish to leave the clan for some time, for trading or for indepentant travel, are allowed to do so at this time. However, it's difficult to return to return during lairing times, as individuals are not informed where the clan will to travel or lair. This knowledge is only known to the leaders of the clan. So many dragons will try to return as quickly as possible, or plan on searching the desert for the sign of their spell shield and hope for the best.
Though hope is not lost for dragons who unfortunately don't make it back. The clan's Star Readers, Apollo (#56410277) and Nautilus (#70670034), spend most of their time flying directly through the storm clouds of the Expanse in order to reach the stars above. These two can serve as a touchstone for anyone who is lost, as they always know where the clan is and can give guidance to anyone they recognize. If someone they don't know comes asking for directions, however, they may be unwilling to help without a good reason.
With Nautilus' intense speed, the pair has a sweeping view of the desert around the clan, and also keep an eye out for any suspicious activity on the horizon. If they notice anything, they report back to leadership and the War Party. Otherwise, they help offer insight to leadership on where to navigate based on weather conditions and astrological readings.
When the call goes out to begin carving, visitors are quickly warned: "you may stay with us, but we'll be underground for who knows how long. If you do not wish to stay, leave now." The clan will then immediately pack up their stalls as shallow pits are quickly carved out, and the clan goes under the sands. Once in the pits, the spell shields are snuffed out, and the Carvers work quickly to get the basic structure for the lair started.

VI. Slipping through the crowd, you tie back your mane of long hair and pull your hood over your face. There's a passageway on the lower level, between the Battle Dome and concourses, that would take you to the combatants’ tunnel on the north side of the Arena.
It’s where you’d originally planned to meet Mando ahead of the games tonight — before making your disastrous, impromptu dinner plans.
You jog down a long corridor of shining metal cages built to hold all manner of beasts before setting them loose in the Arena. By this point in the night, you find the place deserted. The cages are empty, with only a few gamekeepers remaining to muck out the stalls.
Empty, you remind yourself each time one of the flickering lamps along the corridor makes the shadows stir and come to life.
Taking the journey at a run, you burst out of the passageway and, sprinting, fall in behind the Trandoshan, who braced Mando’s every step away from the anarchic scene still raging inside the Arena.
“Who’s thisss?” Rumia hisses, her forked tongue flicking suspiciously over long yellowing fangs.
“A friend,” the Mandalorian grunts.
Which is exciting news because he’s never referred to you as a friend before. The bounty hunter wasn't exactly in the habit of making introductions—or friends, for that matter. You would probably crack a smile or say something coy if he didn’t look like absolute shit right now.
“This way,” you tell her, throwing the cloak over his glinting armor. “There’s a place we can hide.”
Ducking under Mando’s other arm, between the two of you, his pace quickens. The raucous sound from the crowd grows fainter as you make your way back toward the cages—until Imiako’s unmistakable roar fills the mouth of the tunnel behind you.
“We need to move,” Rumia urges, and you both practically shove Mando through the door in your haste.
“Huh,” she snorts. “Never knew this was back here.”
You whisper breathlessly, “How long do you think we’ll need to wait for the stands to clear out?”
“With the Houk looking for us? I’m not leaving before dawn.”
“Catacombs,” Mando groans, clutching at his side.
“What?”
“Under the Arena. The Hutts built…on top of the ruins.” He pants. “Should be tunnels that run...into the old city sewers.”
Scanning with his helmet, the Mandalorian locates a drainage system under the cages feeding downward into the underground maze of ossuaries. Undeterred by the stench, the Trandoshan yanks the grate cover aside, tucks her scaly elbows in, and jumps. You are nowhere near that intrepid and peer down the twenty meters or so of corroded pipe skeptically.
“Here, I’ll lower you with the whipcord.”
“Mando, you’re–”
“Come on,” he commands sternly, unspooling a length of cable from his vambrace.
You step forward dutifully as though it’s a conditioned response—barely stifling a gasp when he reaches between your legs to pull the wire over your shoulder and behind your back.
“Too tight?” he asks, securing the cable across your chest. Not trusting yourself to speak, you twist, shift, and shrug your shoulders before giving him the thumbs up.
“This is a good jacket,” Mando says matter-of-factly, inspecting the leather.
“I–thanks,” you stammer, taken by surprise at the compliment. “It belonged to my brother...”
Nodding, he wraps the cord around his waist and readies himself in a deep squat to belay you down the pipe. Concentrating on a slow, steady tread, you maintain your footing for most of the descent without relying on the cable. Even so, when he touches down beside you, his left leg buckles under the impact. The gods only knew how many stitches he had left intact.
“Stop.” He barks at the Trandoshan, turning on his headlamp. “This way. I left tracks.”
“Where are we heading?”
“Speeder bike. I stowed one at the nearest above ground exit. It’s not far from here.”
“A man with an escape plan. Am-shak be praised!” You notice Rumia has this habit of punctuating each word with a sly tug of her thin lips. And you know what, it's heartening to watch someone else tease him for a change.
Mando leans heavily onto your shoulders as the three of you travel through the tight passageways of roughly hewn stone, blackened from centuries of torch smoke. Except for the occasional corrective change in course, he remains silent, his wheezing breaths echoing off the surrounding rock in the quiet darkness.
Finally, you spot the speeder at the end of the next tunnel, poised and ready.
“We’re about a kilometer east of the old temple,” Mando says, heaving the rusted gate open with his shoulder.
Crisp, cool air cuts through the stale rot of the catacombs, filling your lungs. You all pause to gulp down those first full breaths of clean air before the Mandalorian turns to Rumia, holding out his hand. “Thanks for your help.”
“Thanks for the win.” She replies, giving it an amicable shake. “Don’t suppose I’ll see you in the Arena?”
“No,” he says, ignoring her flirtatious tone. “We’re leaving. Now.”
Mando lifts up a knee to swing his right leg over the bike, only to stagger backward with a guttural moan, clutching his thigh.
“You fly,” he says in your general direction. “I’ll get on the back.”
“Um, yeah…”
So, Mando riding behind you, his groin pressed against your ass with his arms wrapped around your waist, is definitely the stuff of your wet dreams. Alas, it is not meant to be. “I’m not going to be able to pilot the bike.”
“Why not?”
“I, uh...do not know how.”
There’s a prolonged silence while he presumably just stares at you in disbelief. Rumia’s tongue slithers over her face to lick the moisture from her eyeball.
“Well, if neither of you plan to–”
“It’s yours,” Mando says before the Trandoshan can finish, retrieving his sniper rifle from the speeder.
Feeling foolish, you raise a hand and offer her your thanks.
“Token of my gratitude,” she says, tossing you a pouch of jingling credits. Her winnings from that night’s matches. “Small price to pay for my new rankings tomorrow. Should see quite a boost after beating a Mandalorian.”
Mando replies with a curt, “Congratulations,” while Rumia mounts the bike, buoyed by her good fortune.
“Better enjoy it while I can,” she laughs over her shoulder before opening the throttle and accelerating into the starry night.

previously on: pepa posting
it’s 1308. by mapping underground optic cables using a lens apparatus based on the VOED, and thanks to a lucky stumble upon a natural shaft in the ground, pepa has discovered an abandoned ancient rata, “rata x,” located not far from rata sum. the arcane council refused to fund an expedition to explore and loot the rata, fearing any disturbance could wake destroyers or cause sinkholes, and the priory respected this decision. so pepa signed on with an inquest archaeology krewe, and undertook the rata x-pedition illegally.
the mood of the krewe was twitchy. the city was partially flooded and entirely unsound. and while pepa was fascinated by the dropped toys, broken-down appliances, and household items left behind by the fleeing inhabitants, the inquest had no interest in sentimental junk. they were nervous about destroyers, tunnel collapses, pitfalls, the inscrutable dark water, and the ancient security systems that might putter back to life just long enough to kill them, and they quickly developed a suspicion amongst themselves that pepa knew about some real treasure down here, and was holding out on them.
which was true! the magnified VOED lens had picked up a faint but still active energy signature in the heart of rata x. based on her observations of rata x’s layout and the modern statics library, pepa made an educated guess that this signature came from the data core crystal of the city library’s computer base, containing all the stored knowledge of this rata. it would be worth a fortune to the right museum head, researcher, or antiquities collector. and pepa didn’t want the inquest to touch it.
the closer the team got to the library, the more they noticed soft scuttling and magma glow in their periphery. there were destroyers down here—just the tiny melter crabs, for now, but in increasing density.
the krewe scaled a wall and picked their way over rooftops & improvised bridges to the roof of the library, where kaskk used a nifty little inquest laser to cut a new skylight where pepa indicated, and pepa was nominated to rappel down & in.
she slid down kaskk’s rope, into the center of the library, which was encrusted with sleeping destroyers like barnacles on every surface. picked her way around them looking for a data crystal, FOUND IT! had to cover her mouth to keep from squeaking EUREKA!!! pumped her fist did a little stompy dance and pocketed it. and heard the rope slap onto the floor behind her as kaskk let go of the other end.
something must have……. happened up there!
slinking for her life, pepa made it all the way to the front door of the library, which slid open on the loudest, screechiest, last-oiled-250-years-ago track—and the destroyers didn’t move. then, a tinny speaker chimed and said “thanks for learning with us,” and a thousand fiery eyes opened to look at pepa.
the inquest krewe was waiting outside the doors to jump pepa, but took their cue to run when she fucking booked it, triggering the ancient defenses as she ran.
behind her, the library wall caved outward like a breached dam, and destroyers flooded the rata’s walkways. several inquest krewe members were pulled under, trampled and burned in the first few seconds. their single heavy fighter, armed with a flamethrower, turned to face the destroyers, who just swam right through their gouts of artificial fire, fell upon the heavy and tore them to shreds. pepa saw that. most of the others made a last-ditch effort to blast open a new exit to the surface, and brought part of the cavern ceiling down on themselves—crushing a lot of the destroyer swarm, to pepa’s benefit.
the end of his braid smoking, his heels and calves sliced and singed by nipping destroyers, and still holding the data crystal, pepa reached the bottom of the small shaft he’d come in through when he first found the rata, gulped the fresh air, and braced his hands on the sides of the shaft, ready to scrabble his way back up like a mole—
and got stabbed in the back. literally. the inquest krewe leader, kaskk, pulled her knife out of pepa, shoved her down, and stepped on her back to help herself up the shaft. pepa might have been able to follow her up before the destroyers swarmed their position, so they could both survive to settle their differences topside, but she was filled with such fierce and sudden hatred that instead she bucked and squirmed around until her teeth could meet in kaskk’s leg. she bit and tore until the other asura fell on top of her, they rolled a few times, and then pepa kicked kaskk down the slope into the onrush of destroyers. she saw kaskk’s face as she died: an expression of hurt surprise, as if they’d been dear friends, instead of enemies who briefly collaborated, giving each other shifty looks the whole time, then wrestled for the right to feed the other to destroyers.
it confused pepa, and never really left him.
he got out, though climbing the shaft with his back ripped open was agony, then in a frenzy kicked rocks and dirt down the mouth of the shaft, tore down brush and saplings to plug the hole (a feeble stopgap against destroyers, if they'd been intelligent enough to take an interest in the shaft, but they were not), and finally, smashed his VOED lens apparatus and jammed the parts into the ground there, twisted antennae and sharp claws of metal signalling “danger” to any passing explorers. he realized he was weeping crazily and tried to wipe the tears away, smearing blood and jungle mud across his face.
and that’s how she went back to rata sum. straight to her rented lab space, to pack what little she kept there and take the closest waypoint to refuge peak. she had already traded the data core to gixx in exchange for novice status and sanctuary in the priory before the arcane eye—or the inquest—noticed anyone had disappeared, or that pepa had acted against the council’s ruling.
and again, by asuran standards, the x-pedition was considered a mixed success. some loss of assistant life, but the objective was met. not an atypical job for the inquest, except for how flagrantly they'd crossed the arcane council. and the data crystal was everything pepa had hoped. pepa even mentioned rata x when trahearne asked, while scouting her for pact commander, whether she had any prior leadership experience.
but pepa knew it was a nightmarish failure, in her gut. she shouldn’t have worked with the inquest at all, and once she had committed herself to it, she should have put some value on their lives.
when trahearne looked into the details of the rata x incident, following “shell shock,” he was appalled. and his horror cracked their friendship apart forever.

🇫🇮🇪🇪 💥SUSPECTED SABOTAGE DAMAGES GAS PIPELINE BETWEEN FINLAND AND ESTONIA💥
A suspected explosion on Sunday led authorities to shut down the Finland-Estonia Baltic-Connector Gas Pipeline after recording a sudden drop of pressure.
The Baltic-Connector, a natural gas pipeline, connects Finland and Estonia's gas grids together. The pipeline provides Finland with access to natural gas piped from the Incukalns underground gas storage facility located in Latvia.
Petteri Orpo, the current Finnish Prime Minister said Tuesday that the source of the leak had, in fact, been found and was now being investigated by both countries but said the cause of the explosion was not yet clear.
Damage to a telecoms cable was also foind in a separate location from the damage to the pipeline, occurring along two points of Finland's Exclusive Economic Zone.
On Sunday, Norsar, Norway's seismological institute said it had detected a "probable explosion" of a magnitude 1.0 along the Baltic coast at approximately 01:20, a far smaller magnitude explosion than that recorded in the Nordstream pipeline bombings.
"The discovered damage could not have been caused by normal use of the pipeline or pressure fluctuations," Mr Orpo told a press conference Tuesday. The Finnish authorities have since ruled out the possibility that the seismic activity was naturally caused, indicating they believe it might have been deliberate and caused by "external activity."
Of course, European and NATO leadership are already turning their sights on Russia and their arch-nemesis, Russian President Vladimir Putin with one Finnish source telling the BBC, "Frankly we were expecting something like this sooner."
Authorities in Helsinki however, are remaining relatively quiet about their suspicions for now, avoiding putting the blame on Moscow too publicly in case they come up empty after a intensive investigation.
Although the pipeline is Finland's only direct link to the European Union's wider gas network, Prime Minister Orpo insists there are enough alternative sources for Finland to ensure its energy security.

The next database was underground, once again, spreading wide and deep under a simple one-story office building made of yellow brick. Exploring deeper, they found no evidence of anything, raiders or otherwise, and the biggest threat felt like collapse from above until, ironically, they got further underground.
The main room contained rows and rows and rows of servers on shelves, each neatly plugged in with rows and rows and rows of cables trailing from them to the ceiling, along the length to the wall. The sheer size of it reminded the pair of the hangar more than the library stacks, and by the number, probably contained the entire telecommunication system of the twenty-fifth century.
"Alright. Once again, the hard part is power," Sunny told them.
Freija groaned and Thomas flinched away from her. "Are we trying to boost this whole room or can we maybe two-phase for a filemap so you can tell me what box is special?" he asked. "I think we'd need Rasputin's help to find enough sources, and I doubt the entire circuitry system is still functional– we'll more likely fry everything if we plug all of it in."
Sunny bobbed her affirmative. "I'm certain of it. Me and Freija can look around for a control room, you and Rex look for adapters, would you? Generators should still be floating around, and I'm sure there's some batteries or power cores around here somewhere.

Thomas could appreciate the quiet he got for distancing himself from the other two, but he was getting tired of this mood that kept tugging on his robes. "So are you going to let your fuming ruin this entire field trip for you? I'm having fun."
"I hate them."
"You like them," Thomas argued airily. "You've liked Sunny since before she was Sunny, you've liked Freija since the first time we worked together. What you are experiencing is acute jealousy. You want what they have."
"No. I want what Sunny has."
"I doubt that. Can you really imagine if you had to lead her around in the beginning? You don't want her Guardian."
"You were helpless for fifty years."
"I was alone in a forest with no food, weapons, and a crappy suit I was buried in. I did great. She would get so annoyed at you for trying to help, she'd ignore you. She'd sooner lose toes to frostbite than put on boots on your command."
"She's stupid," Rex grumped. "But she's useful. The exact opposite of you- smart and useless."
"Well, you can mistake that heat for rage and hate if you want, but I'm telling you- You're jealous." He sighed and blew a raspberry. "I know I am. You weren't so kind to me three years in."
Thomas knew Rex couldn't answer, having long lost his defense of trying to drive Thomas into acting right, knowing now that Thomas had been right the whole time. The dig wasn't hard but it was sharp.
And Sunny was right. Her cheerleading and adulation led the idiot to some incredible heights, the likes of which Rex couldn't coax out of his Guardian in centuries. Part of this was her strength in her Light, but since Thomas discovered Strand, Rex couldn't help wondering what would have happened....
Too late, now.
"Why won't you help me?" Thomas asked. "Here, now? It's not your usual excuse."
Thomas's visual lit up with the symbols indicating locations, but no help with directions. Thomas had not determined with one hundred percent certainty if Rex could do better than that and chose not to, or if he genuinely had some difficulty pointing out a real path from where he was to the thing he sought.
To annoy Rex a little, he opened the comms to the other two. "Hey, Sunny."
"Hm?"
The tone let him know he interrupted something, but Thomas could never tell if the fighting or playing was a proxy for the other or not. "When you're laying out a path from point A to point B, how do you do it? Is there a sort of sense you need to do it?"
"You're wrong for this," Rex told him bitterly.
"There's probably more than a few ways to do it," Sunny offered helpfully, clearly not knowing why she was being asked, "but my method is to thoroughly scan a straight line from here to there and measuring density until I can find something like a full path out of what amounts to air bubbles in debris or the network of hallways or whatever we're squirming through. Sometimes I can't scan far, sometimes there's too many paths to bother telling her, sometimes it's a straight shot and neither of us really needs it, so I don't do it a lot. Searching ruins, I'll just keep a full mapped layout until we call ourselves done."
"I see why Caiatl likes asking you questions," Thomas chuckled. "Or have you just gotten in the habit of answering all questions like that because of her?"
Sunny paused, then said, "Oh, wait, you were home when she called Freija." The tones again, but Thomas read the annoyance loud and clear this time.
He didn't bother hiding the snicker, knowing they could decide to ignore him or not, and knowing they knew why he was laughing-- it was a relief to him when they weren't in perfect harmony, and he found some lightheartedness in it. At worst, their little spats were cute, and half the time, one of them appreciated the backup.
"She's jealous," Freija said. "And mad. Not at me, exactly, she's mad at Caiatl. I guess she feels like we went behind her back. Which, we kinda did, but I had nothing to do with that, and she's a fucking empress who had her reasons, so she's just kinda annoyed with the whole thing."
"Yeah, actually, I am, too, a little?" Thomas said. "I don't like attention from higher-ups, see, and that's one of the highest up? Can we not do that, please?"
"Sorry," Sunny said as Freija said, "I can't do shit, I don't know what you expect from me here."
"I don't expect anything from you, Freija, really," he sighed. "I can't-- I'm almost glad I Rose early, I can't imagine what I'd be like if I had access to all these tools and weapons in my first days."
"You'd be an ape," Rex grumbled.
"I'd be a bookworm," Thomas replied. "Wouldn't even know how to use my legs, but I'd build guns fit to make the Cabal steal some schematics. Snipe from miles off, too, would have had all the chances for practice there." He chuckled bitterly. "You are a lucky Light," he told Freija, not happy to be reflecting again.
Times were hard. And they weren't anymore, but the scars would remain forever. Fun things about being eternal that the kid wouldn't be able to understand for another hundred years-- forever is a long time to collect memories. Blushes and freckles and stretch marks from skinned knees and sunlight and good harvests; scars and gaps and short ends from blows and death and loss.
"Yeah, Sunny's made pretty clear that she doesn't think I'd have survived long in the Dark Ages."
"I think you'd have been fine," Thomas said under his breath. "I don't know what she's talking about."
"Mercy upon other Guardians," Sunny said.
Thomas didn't answer, but Freija heard his thoughts in the silence. "Yeah, I can't really deny it," she said. He heard some clattering on her end, but not much.
"Best we can imagine is her collecting enough good ones to back her up before she ran into the vicious ones," Sunny teased. The notes were warm, but a bit too saturated for it to be a new conversation. Probably part of what they were discussing earlier.
"Don't you ever get bored of studying them?" sighed Rex, including them deliberately.
"Studying?" echoed Freija as Sunny sighed loudly.
"He's studying you, he does it all the time, it's annoying." Rex hadn't turned off the indicators, yet, so Thomas figured he was just getting back at him for the questions, but still.
"Why's it annoying to you? Can you see him?" Freija asked. "Also, he studies everyone. It's a thing he does. You know that. What'd he do that you're trying to get him into trouble?"
Rex hated that and Thomas didn't bother hiding the laugh. When she couldn't guess correctly, he'd feel the need to correct her, but then she could guess correctly, and he hadn't found a way past the wall that was Freija with a Point.
"I asked about the path thing because Rex doesn't give me one. But unlike a lot of the stuff he doesn't do for me, he didn't do it and then stop. So I was wondering if it might be something he was just incapable of for whatever reason, that he might lack the right sensors or couldn't do that kind of processing."
"Ahhhh," Freija said sagely, and they giggled together.
"I think it's the sensor I use to scan the entire span in front of me. I have a good stretch on it. Rex should be able to use maps..."
"Those are occasions where he says that I should be able to handle it," Thomas explained . "He's not wrong, I manage fine, I just have to check the map myself."
"That sounds annoying as fuck. He can't even give you an overlay on your visual? Even without tracking you or some shit?" Freija sounded incredulous, but she also sounded sad, and Thomas didn't want to hear it. He considered muting her for a moment, but she went quiet before he followed through.
Silence haunted the line until Freija started humming to herself absently, probably forgetting he was still there and tuned into her comms.
This hallway flooded years ago with knee-deep stagnant water, and Thomas did not want to find out how many snakes were in it. They weren't in the Dark or anything, but he couldn't trust Rex to heal him before he died.
"Hey, Freija, can you come check this out for me? Vindictive Ghost is vindictive."
"What, you think he might leave you down?"
"Might refuse to heal me because this is an obviously stupid decision to make," he explained. "It's water, and I suspect there are things inside it that would do me harm.
"That sounds like Rex," Sunny sighed for him. "Set a marker for me to trace when we're done here?"
Thomas stamped the wall with a chirping marker and continued on the way.
At first Thomas thought she was trying to whisper in spite of comms, like he wouldn't be able to hear them if she spoke quietly enough, but then he realized she just didn't want to talk about it at all.
"Water?"
Sunny probably answered on their own channel, and he left them alone to pretend he didn't hear her. Of course she hated having an irrational fear. Or a fear at all, he was sure.
"How deep is it?" Freija asked, much more solidly. "I can't swim," she added, clearly not wanting to say it, and probably being forced into it by Sunny. Face that she had a fear if she wasn't going to face the water. "I won't," she added, angry this time.
"You know, if I didn't know exactly what was going on between you and Sunny, I would worry that I upset you. Can you even control how you sound?"
"No," Freija snipped. "Tell me."
"It's just knee-deep, I'm just sure there's snakes and your greaves will do better than my pants to keep that at a minimum."
The relief was tangible. "Oh, yeah, then sure, get right to it."
"Why do you insist on proclaiming that you cannot swim? We have seen you swim."
Thomas hadn't bothered pointing it out, but Rex was in the mood to fight. Thomas considered muting him, but that would just make him worse when he undid that, and possibly retaliated.
"I don't swim," Freija argued.
"You do," Rex replied. "In water shallow enough to stand in, you will freely lift your feet and swim, and even do well, with four different kinds of stroke. You can swim. You fear deep water. Why?"
Freija remained silent for a while, and Thomas could practically taste Rex's smug sense of victory for him. It took her nearly a full minute to finally respond in the simplest, barest voice she could manage. "I don't like anywhere that I can't plant my heels. Water is the worst, because it's both too solid to fall through and too soft to plant in. I'm also afraid to drown, but I don't know which order that goes in-- when I talk about it, it's definitely the water I'm afraid of. Smothering and pressing and if I'm not in my armor, the only thing it has to do to kill me is be in the same place as my head at the wrong time."
The smug sense fell away-- he couldn't exploit her vulnerability if it wasn't one, sensitive or not. Plus, the way she put it almost made it sound like the fear made sense. "You make it sound like a seven foot pond is an ocean," Thomas observed, wondering if she felt like that was something she should fix.
"It feels like that, to me," she explained . "You can use that one, if you wanna use that fear, that's exactly right-- if I'm not on the bottom and can't reach the top at the same time, I feel like I'm floating in the dead middle of the ocean; x and z axes dead middle. Y axis can be wherever it wants, if I'm not at the top and bottom at the same time, the ocean is below or above. And above, if I'm actually under the water."
"Probably didn't help that Titan actually did have an ocean above us."
"Two," Freija argued, tones low and sharp. "Two oceans."
Thomas remembered teasing and felt a mild pang of guilt. No, she didn't regard her phobia as something to fix, and found justification in it by the very fact that she had, indeed, been to the bottom of two oceans.
"Fair enough," he decided. "You developed that fear from your first life, right?"
"That's the theory," Freija grumped. "I still feel it for her. She grabbed and she pulled and she moved before the littler one did, because dead weight in the water is like that, and she was scared. It sank in deep. I've died and I never felt fear like that, except on the lip of the methane."
"See what happens when we accept our shortcomings?" Thomas teased Rex. "We can get through them however we can."
"And run from them as much as possible," Rex agreed in scathing tones.
"I found a couple of bigger batteries," Freija said. "How's your search for an adapter going? I was hoping to find some in here but they're meant to be slotted into something bigger. Actually, can you find a smaller terminal? Maybe like the big one but a smaller room? I bet we can hook the smaller box into it with this battery."
"I'll keep an eye out," Thomas promised. "Rex? Please? This one is something I can't do on my own."
Thomas waited silently for Rex to refuse or give whatever he was going to give.
Finally, a small directory diamond appeared in a corner. Thomas could hardly use it properly, he hardly knew how they worked on the edges of his vision. Down meant behind...
"We're coming to you, don't wander far."
