"Between October 2022 and April 2023, 3,337 Parisians aged 16 to 80 years old were equipped with GPS trackers to record their journeys for seven consecutive days.
In the suburbs, where public transit is less dense, transport by car was found to be the main form of mobility.
But for journeys from the outskirts of Paris to the center, the number of cyclists now far exceeds the number of motorists, a huge change from just five years ago.
Most of the journeys recorded were commuter trips.
The city’s socialist mayor Anne Hidalgo has pushed through a great many anti-motoring measures during her two administrations—such as reducing the number of parking places, restricting access by SUVs, and closing some major roads to motorists—and the latest survey will be validation for her policies, none of which have caused the kind of protests that the French capital has long been famous for.
In short, culling cars has been far more popular than her petrolhead critics predicted, with Paris becoming cleaner and healthier to boot.

Official measurements have found that Paris is rapidly becoming a city of transportation cyclists. The survey of how people now move in Paris was conducted with GPS trackers by academics from L’Institut Paris Région, the largest urban planning and environmental agency in Europe.
The institute’s transportation report was published on April 4. It found that the way Parisians are now traveling from the suburbs to the city center, especially during peak periods, has undergone a revolution thanks in part to the building of many miles of cycleways.
Those cyclists now on the streets and roads of central Paris are not Spandex-clad professionals as seen on the Tour de France but everyday transportation cyclists.
L’Institut Paris Région carried out the survey for a consortium of fourteen public and private partners, including local government and rail companies.
Reporting on the institute’s survey, French TV channel 20 Minutes told viewers that the “capital’s cycle paths are always full.”

Women should be offered "menopause checks" by GPs after turning 40, campaigners and MPs have said.
The Menopause All-Party Parliamentary Group said this should be included in the NHS Health Check offered every five years to those aged between 40 and 74.
MPs said a lot of women over 40 go to their GP with symptoms, unaware they are experiencing the menopause.
Campaigner Mariella Frostrup said it was "ludicrous" that menopause information was not part of the check.
The free NHS Health Check looks for conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.
Ms Frostrup, chairwoman of the Menopause Mandate campaign, told BBC Breakfast it should include information and support about the menopause.
"It seems utterly ludicrous you go to this health check as a woman in your early 40s, which is exactly when perimenopause starts for most women, and the one thing you don't find out about is the one thing that you will absolutely 100% be experiencing over the subsequent decade," the author and journalist said.
Ms Frostrup added that a survey of more than 2,000 women conducted for the campaign found the majority had self-diagnosed their menopause, with only 12% getting a diagnosis from a health professional.
"Surely that's not good enough in the 21st Century," she said.
The Menopause All-Party Parliamentary Group said doctors often failed to recognise the symptoms.
More needed to be done to ensure medical professionals feel "equipped and empowered" to prescribe all types of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) - a treatment that helps alleviate the symptoms of the menopause, the group said.
Labour MP Carolyn Harris, the group's chairwoman, said: "We still have many hurdles to tackle to ensure women suffering through menopause get the support they deserve.
"Day in, day out I hear stories from women who can't get a diagnosis from their GP, who can't get HRT due to a lack of supply, who have left their jobs due to a lack of support, or who simply don't know where to turn for help."
What is the menopause?
The menopause is when women's periods stop, which normally happens around the age of 51. Symptoms normally start in the mid-40s.
This signals the end of the reproductive years and the start of a new phase of life.
The lead-up to this happening, when periods become irregular, is known as the perimenopause. It starts, on average, at 46.
This is when many women notice their periods becoming unpredictable or heavy, and have feelings or physical problems they have not experienced before.
When periods have not happened for 12 months, you can look back and say you have been through the menopause (the last period).
For some, it can happen earlier - either naturally, or after treatment for another condition.
It comes as research from the UC San Diego School of Medicine, published by the International Menopause Society, highlights that women going through the menopause are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Dr Sonya Babu-Narayan, associate medical director of the British Heart Foundation, said: "Changes to a woman's body during menopause, such as fallen oestrogen levels, are linked with a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
"After the menopause, the chance of a woman having a heart attack is drastically increased.
"All too often, women don't prioritise their own health. As we women approach menopause, it is a perfect opportunity to reassess our risks of future cardiovascular disease and to take steps to protect our hearts."
She said preventative action included not smoking, exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight.

Before you fly, inspect your drone. Just like a pilot, go through a pre-flight checklist.
Avoid taking off close to tall trees, telephone wires, or other significant obstacles.
Don't lose sight of your drone. Keeping your drone in sight is the cardinal rule of drone flight. Maintaining visual contact can help you detect potential hazards and obstacles better and make it more difficult for you to unintentionally fly out of range.
When you're flying, pay close attention. People crash their drones most frequently when they become preoccupied during flying.
Become familiar with flying without a GPS (GPS). Drone pilots who are just starting out should get some practice without GPS.
Learn about local drone regulations in your area. Although the FAA has the final say in drone matters, it is a good idea to check your state's laws.
Avoid flying your drone in populated places. National parks and monuments are off-limits to drone use since the National Park Service has a restriction in place. Large-scale public events also forbid the use of drones.

Confirm the civil twilight hours if you happen to be flying at dusk or dawn. This is when the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon, either after sunset or just before sunrise, and it feels light enough to fly.
When flying into the wind, take very good care. The most challenging flying conditions include windy days because they make it even more difficult to fly steadily and precisely. Additionally, confirm that the wind speed is under 20 mph.
Verify that there is a 10% or lower likelihood of rain. Drone flying in the rain is a disaster waiting to happen.
Plan your shots before taking off if you're filming. Before you take to the sky, make sure to prepare your route and shots. On foot, scout the location you'll be filming in and devise a sequence that takes the surroundings, your skills, and equipment into consideration.
Have extras on hand. So that you can make repairs on the go and carry out your planned activities, keep extra parts available.
Don't switch to manual mode too quickly. Flyers with advanced skills should use manual mode. The features designed to make flying simpler won't provide you the extra stability you need when in manual mode.
With the FAA, register your new drone. The FAA's Unmanned Aircraft Registration system requires all new owners of drones weighing more than.55 grams and less than.55 pounds to register.
Even when used for business, drone piloting may be enjoyable. But flying a drone incorrectly can result in expensive harm to the drone, other objects, or even humans.
