I don’t like minimizing the importance and gravity of Laios and Toshiro’s fight into just being a childish squabble, even if to a degree it is framed that way, because to both of them it has a lot of personal significance and emotional weight and runs very deep to their characters… The fight isn’t nothing it’s a LOT, they made up but it’s not something easy to express and to get over for either of them which makes it all the more meaningful! I’m on both sides but there very much are sides, there’s no "they’re both having a ball, Toshiro and Laios hand in hand yay" side to the fight, that comes after
The fight with Toshiro WAS very scary to Laios, almost existentially so, but it’s moreso the "I thought I’d made a friend!!" bit and my god. My god actually
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like it’s not "just" about oh his friend liking him less than he thought, THAT IS SO MUCH. It’s a bond he thought he had being a lie it’s all the time and moments spent together either being a lie from his perspective or marred now looking back. It’s not only being upset at Toshiro for lying but upset at himself that he’s so easy to fool, it’s being upset that there’s something so wrong with you that you can’t even tell if your "close buddy" even actually likes you or not, it’s like. Holding my head. He can’t trust his own vision of events that happened do you see. There’s always this film of distrust that it could be a lie that should be there when he interacts with people there’s always this sense of cloak and dagger to expect backstabs out of nowhere because you CAN’T see it coming you CAN’T you CAN’T there’s something about you which makes it impossible so you CAN’T-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s so scared of not being able to read people. He knows it’s a weak spot he has, he’s always known. All of these bits are centered around social expectations and betrayals, the assumption that he doesn’t belong either in society or with other humans.
And Laios’ level of awareness is actually sort of complex to analyze, but it’s there, there’s how out of him and Falin he was the one sensitive to the ~aura of hatred~ he felt from the townspeople, there’s of course his nightmares whispering to him about the mocking looks, and how yeah actually he realizes that his gold stripper coworker was taking advantage of him. There’s of course the Winged Lion speech about his trauma and how he fundamentally mistrusts/dislikes humans to some deep seated degree, this distrust that he still keeps under control always. There’s how pre-canon he often wanted to suggest eating monsters but never worked up the courage to bring it up with the others. There’s how he gets across as stoic when he isn’t being enthusiastic…… We don’t know how aware and wary he is exactly in the moment but we do know he has some anxiety around social stuff, and looking back he does notice and aughh augh, the sense you have to hide yourself to not get hurt and be on your guard and shit and.
When you don’t know what to look out for and when to look out for it, the general ‘common sense’ of not always trusting people or noticing when someone’s messing with you becomes hypervigilance in social settings
Tumblr media
"Man they really know what you hate huh." Being socially unaware literally plagues him, he knows, he knows it so well.
It’s so quick that it’s almost hard to digest how literal and blatant Laios summoning his monster to crush all the people who’ve hurt him is. His literal go-to coping mechanism for comfort in his literal monster-induced emotionally intense nightmares, saving him by taking away the upsetting element (the humans)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Monsters are his coping fantasy, where they can whisk him away from humanity, all the hurt it’s caused him and its arbitrary rules" with the subtlety of a brick. Monsters are his comfort safe zone "because they kill humans" yes but no it’s because he pits them as the guardians against humans who to him are in the role of the agressors. To him they represent freedom from the shackles of what it means to be part of humanity, a fundamentally social species

theres been some posts re:pet dog management and each remind me of the times ive been written off as hysterical for not wanting to leave dogs that are unfamiliar each other alone unsupervised for long stretches of time. ie when introducing a new dog to the household or when minding someone else's dog and going to work or a long outing. vs setting up simple but adequate pens for each where they're nearby but not within reach of each other. when that is an available option.

Thank you all for voting in the poll to decide who was going to be the leader of the band! It turned out to be such a close race!
#poorly drawn mdzs#better drawn mdzs#mdzs#madam lan#A-qing#Band AU#(Reminder that Madam Lan's design inspiration goes to Qourmet!)#Madam Lan may have been the winner per vote count but there were so many strong advocates for A-Qing!#I played around with a few versions of what the 'poll winner' art was going to be and ultimately decided I wanted them both.#As any good theater love knows though - The battle for leadership was a ruse. They *all* get a chance to be featured.#Cooperation was the real end goal! However I do think these two have the best frontman energy of the group.#Or at least 'crowd favourite' energy. I also really loved hearing what people thought their vocal styles would be like!#This was probably one of my favourite polls to do and I love drawing these characters a lot B*)#I'd love to spend a bit more time in this AU so count on me bringing it back.#One thing I keep feeling like I need to redeem myself on is Madam Lan's Translucent skirt. I have *not* done the concept justice yet.#It is such a crack-platonic ship but I want to think Madam Lan and A-Qing would enjoy each other's company.#Possibly also with JYL as well. They can be like mutually beneficial therapy dogs to each other.#Madam Lan never got to see her kids grow up into teenagers after all. She only had sons. Never daughters.#Even if she saw her kids once a month we do know she treated them with so much love and kindness.#She would bite the shit out of YZY for yelling at JYL. What a sight to see. A-Qing would also start biting (for fun).

i spent a lot of time when leon was a puppy just counter conditioning him to loud noises and yelling because i live with kinda loud people and didn´t want him to be scared of things like thunder/fireworks
i did actually pull it off and now he thinks yelling and things like banging or clapping are "fun play sounds" and when people try to intimidate him out of being over excited they just get a himbo collie body slamming them

loved the new acolyte episode. the way it plays with the nuances in the jedi by having indara refuse to get involved bc she wants to do things by the book vs sol who feels this connection to osha, this fear for her well-being and feels that’s more important than any rules. both sides getting angry and paranoid and it leading to aniseya, sol, and torbin reacting emotionally & violently. sol refusing to fight korli because he KNOWS he fucked this up. sol willing to accept the consequences but indara, like sol & the witches, is trying to put this child’s well-being over some arbitrary rule. it’s so good and such a good demonstration of both how the jedi council works to stop conflict and how it is completely unprepared to deal with natural human emotion and error.
and of course, as expected, mae is not The Evil Twin. she sets the fire on accident, it spins out of control, and she’s held into this anger for so long because it’s a justified anger! has it helped her? no! but it’s guarded her heart against the overwhelming grief of losing her entire culture in a moment. and then there’s osha, who has no idea the events she’s set into motion - all she wants is the room to figure out who she is without everyone’s expectations weighing her down!! she’s just a kid!!!!!!

A little bit about CKC pointing field trials (puppy stakes) in general for those who are interested in how they run.
CKC has its hunting dog events broken out pretty specifically. CKC is restrictive in which breeds can run which events (e.g., only CKC registered approved pointing breeds can run pointing tests, other breeds are excluded even if they technically could complete the exercises. Rory can only run pointing events, she couldn't do a retriever test or a spaniel test).
We also have a distinction in trials vs tests, as most other venues do.
Trials - you are competing against other people and being judged against a standard. You run in pairs. Top 4 dogs get placements, once you get enough points you get a field championship.
Tests - you are running alone and being judged against a standard for a qualifying/non-qualifying runs. 3 qualifying runs gets you a title.
We are currently running CKC pointing field trials.
CKC pointing trials have two main distinctions within them - puppy stakes and senior stakes. You can enter whichever stake you're ready for, with some exceptions (like age) - you don't have to run puppy stakes before running senior stakes.
Puppy stakes are a little lower pressure because they judge puppies' potential. Within puppy stakes, there are two main types of runs.
Open puppy stakes: any puppy *of eligible breed* between 6 and 18 months old. No birds hidden in the field, no gunshots on the course, 15-20 minutes running.
Derby stakes: any puppy of eligible breed between 6 and 27 months old. At least two birds hidden in the field, puppy needs to point birds if encountered, gunshots, 20-30 minutes.
We run open puppy for now. Here's how this goes:
We are randomly paired with another puppy and handler (this pairing is called a brace, the other handler and dog are our bracemates). We walk up to the start line together (usually the entrance to a big pasture) with our puppies on leash. Two judges (on ATV or horseback) give us a quick overview of the course we have to walk. The course is usually through a big open field with medium cover (think knee high grasses and shrubs, some wetlands, some hills but no forest) and typically avoids fencelines or roads. They tell us to release our dogs at the same time, so we let the dogs off leash and start walking (very fast, and I'm a fast walker to begin with). The course is usually huge, much bigger than we could possibly walk in 20 mins.
Usually the puppies play a little bit and then get to work. The judges are looking for puppies who can ignore the other dog and handler, judges, ATV, horses, and spectators, hunt independently, cover lots of ground (move fast and steady across the terrain while still sniffing), use the wind to follow scent, and respond to their handlers' directions. If the puppies want to play too much, the judges will ask the handlers to split up a little bit to encourage the puppies to work independently. Usually you stick within about 10m (25ft) of your bracemate. Puppies can range anywhere as long as they stay visible and ahead of their handlers. (Puppies are often about several hundred metres/yards away from their handlers depending on breed. Rory ranges about 50-100m in real life and about 75-300m in field trials. It is an exhilarating exercise in trust in my training.)
The judges follow behind us and then spectators can follow behind the judges, if they want. We have to keep up a very fast pace to encourage the puppies to cover as much ground as possible, not at a jog but pretty close.
In puppy stakes, you want to keep as quiet as you can. The judges are looking for instinct and basic potential, so you don't want to ruin that by giving your dog tons of directions. If your puppy follows directions, that suggests they need directions to function. If your dog ignores directions, that's unresponsive and also bad. Ideally you shouldn't say much during your run unless there's danger (if a deer runs out, you would recall your puppy) or evils (if your puppy is eating poop, you could recall or redirect). You are allowed to chat with your bracemate but you have to hustle fast so it's usually friendly but minimal.
One important piece of open puppy stakes is that there are no planted birds in the field! There may be wild birds, but it's unlikely. Many people "over train" their bird dog puppies on live birds, and then the puppies get really frustrated that there are no birds in the field after they search so hard. This causes puppies to slow down or give up entirely during their run, so this is something that judges look for. In real life hunting, there's no guarantee of birds so it's important that puppies can work through frustration without losing enthusiasm.
The judges kind of shout directions (go left, head for those trees) from behind to keep us on course. In the best courses, the judges make you walk a loop, but sometimes your time ends in the middle of a field. When your time is up, the judges will thank you and tell you to leash your dog. We recall our puppies and put them on leash and walk them back to our cars for water and snacks.
That's the whole run for open puppy! It's very low pressure. The puppies basically just follow their hearts and do what they were made to do.
Derby is extremely similar, except there are birds planted in the field. The puppies don't HAVE to find birds but obviously its preferable that they do. If they find birds, they must point (stop moving and stand still staring at the bird). They don't have to be steady to flush or shot (they can chase when the bird flies or when the gun goes off), and only blanks are shot in derby. The course is a little longer but everything else is the same.
In open puppy and derby stakes, the judges are just looking for potential. They want to know if your dog would be competitive in the senior stakes, so they're looking for lots of independence, lots of bird drive, lots of stamina, things like that. Because they're judging potential, younger puppies may be judged a little easier than older puppies.
I think that's the gist of puppy stakes in CKC pointing field trials! Send me a message if you have questions about our experience so far!

joe smith my best friend joe smith i never said anything bad about joe smith.
#just encapsulates a lot of my thoughts on this. i don't want to make some big holier-than-thou opinion post or whatever#because ultimately that's my guy & saying shit on tumblr doesn't mean anything#but i've been thinking a lot about where i draw the line on physical play vs player safety#since like. last year. lots of thinking#and i think this is mostly where i come down. i don't think his style of play is inherently dirty. i don't think he's a bad player#i do think he has to be smarter though. and if he doesn't clean up these decisions after this suspension it's. not a good look for him#like sue me but i do think there's a difference between throwing a hit that results in an injury to defend kirill#and shoving a guy's head into the ice because you're. mad? that you're losing & he keeps drawing penalties?#like idk not only is it unprompted and dirty it's also just not a smart play at that point in the game & the season#ok anyway. that's all.#bees speaks#injury tw#? idk. let me know if you want this tagged differently#also on a completely different note i'm kind of fascinated by how this confirms a lot of my thoughts on the hartzy-guerin dynamic#the way i think dean was kind of running interference for that animosity. there's not that shield of favoritism anymore#& that's interesting to me both from a fan perspective & a fanfiction perspective.#bad dogs whose favored owner got fired are left at the mercy of the roommate/spouse/parent who never wanted them in the first place

Gonna say it again, "Just stop consuming the genre" is THE WORST POSSIBLE RESPONSE to someone complaining about the lack of representation in their preferred genre!! And "Consume other stuff too" is not much better!!! I don't care how much you think varying media consumption is a Good and Holy lifestyle, not everyone wants to do that! There is no obligation to do that and there should not be! Because it's fucking entertainment. It's not a college major.
And! And and and. I would be remiss to not point out that when you tell someone, "If you want well written (minority) just get out of (genre fandom)" you are, regardless of your motivations, rhetorically aligning yourself with the exact same bigots who just want the pro-representation crowd to shut up and go away.
#I don't know how people can say “shonen is written for teen boys so obviously you're the idiot for wanting good rep from it”#as if teen boys don't also deserve stories with well-written diverse casts??#as if the poor reactions they often have to diversity are just inherent to their boyish nature and not a result of a widespread lack of rep#as if diverse casts in popular media aren't A PROVEN WAY to reduce implicit biases against groups of people on a very large scale#you people are dogs. how can you unironically say “this genre was made for teen boys so everyone else should stfu and gtfo”#and not immediately see that you've just aligned yourself with the actually bad people in the fandom#these stances also perfectly miss the point of “I love this genre and want to see a flaw in it corrected” because they are overwhelmingly..#...written by people who do not love the genre in question and are not interested in loving the genre#like yeah ultimately I understand that most of these posts don't give a true shit about helping people find rep in media#their main purpose 99% of the time is to publicly gloat about their supposedly superior media fixations#It's a real autism on autism violence (internet style) so I find it contemptible in a way that pulls all the muscles of my face downwards#“haw haw read another book (the ones I incidentally find engaging) and stop reading your dumb idiot books (the ones you find engaging)”#you can actually shut up tho that's the thing#you can just not say anything and make the world a better place Luigi Marioparty style#it's a wonderful strategy to use#if you've read through all these tags then 1. I thank you and 2. I have a little request if you're willing to give me more thought & time:#try to pay close attention the next few times you're talking about broad media fandoms which you aren't a part of#watch those little twinges in your chest and ask yourself#“is what I'm saying true? do I actually know enough to say that? what is the point of what I'm saying here? what do I want these ppl to do?#I think we all get caught up in Media Gloating sometimes#if you find that your thoughtless comments become concerning after you put thought into them#maybe it's time to not make them#or to even (as a totally random example) make a post arguing AGAINST those comments#because guess what? your bad take there was probably not yours alone; I'd wager 1000 other similar people have made similar takes#but they're not all gonna reflect on that unprompted; that's where you can come in#shonen#lgbtq representation#female representation#representation in media#queer representation

There is something so good about Akutagawa--a very much feared, boogeyman like figure (even amongst his own men) in Yokohama because of his violence, bloodlust, and steadfast loyalty to a violent criminal organization such as the Port Mafia--given biblical angel symbolism
I don't know, something something about someone whose beauty is so incomprehensible and terrifying to most. He's not physically ugly, he's not--he's beautiful, the type of beautiful that almost feel as if he's not a real person, like he's a mirage, or a painting. But he's beautiful not like those renaissance cherubs and lovely looking maidens for angels, but more like the biblical angels with their beauty beyond mortal grasp, the beauty that brings fear and revulsion towards whoever sees them because they cannot comprehend it. Coming across him makes you understand why angels say, "Be not afraid" when they reveal themselves to mortals. An incomprehensible beauty that very few can keep looking at. A dangerous feat, literally and metaphorically.
(This isn't only with his physical appearance either--for someone who is constantly beaten down both by canon and by the fandom for being "simple", he is a terrifying bundle of different aspects that contradict each other. Like a super machine you open up and you see the intricate criss crossing of wires and bolts that hold it together. He's a mess of nerves and feelings and experiences so profound, so horrific, that you don't know where to start with him. To uncoil him and see him truly bare is almost impossible. Where does he end and the roots that connect him to the earth begin?)
Something about Akutagawa being an angel, a being created entirely to follow the will of "God", obey their every word. Unwavering loyalty to their master while singing praise. Acting entirely on the order of their master--wing always dipped in blood for his sake. A weapon of "heaven' that brings destruction to those who oppose "God" and be one of the many upon which "God" rests upon.
(Almost everything Akutagawa does is for the sake of the Port Mafia, taking orders from the "master" (boss) himself. Willingness and obedience and loyalty repeatedly exploited and used, everything he has done as one of the high ranking leaders handling most of the Mafia's dirty work playing a part so Mori's throne stays high.)
Something about comparing Akutagawa to a certain archangel, finding repulsion in "God"'s cherished creation, the inferiority that came with being "less" to "mankind", and the painful fall from grace to the deepest pits of despair when he confronts the being that created him, molded him, and then condemn him. And to his humiliation, mankind, for centuries, condemns him too.
(He can't be compared to Lucifer, God's most beloved angel. Maybe Dazai did value him, but it doesn't matter, does it? because the difference between the two is that one was cherished and one never was. However, you can compare the rage and humiliation Akutagawa felt towards Atsushi--for obtaining Dazai's approval and affection with no effort, no proper control over his skill or any seemingly differentiating quality-- to Lucifer's refusal to bow down to humanity--a creation inherently imperfect and lackluster, with not the qualities of angels. And as a result? Disgraced. Both by the creator and by ones that held their creator's favor. )
Something about Akutagawa being an angel--someone whose presence means nothing pleasant to those he appears before. A reaper of sorts, responsible for taking life and for souls to see the afterlife (killing both as an order and an act of mercy, for he despises torture and meaningless suffering). A guardian angel watching over "mankind" from afar, where he is not aware and saving him from certain death at his own expense.
There's just something so appealing about depicting Akutagawa--a fearsome, ruthless, and bloodthirsty mafioso, a boogeyman to his own men--as an angel, be it of death, of mercy, a destroying angel-- whatever anyone wants to see him as and use him for.

oc deep dive!! :) tagged by @ruvviks TYY this was very fun i love this guy

Tumblr media
What common/uncommon fear do they have?
He has a number of ‘common’ fears, although a non insignificant amount of them are related to trauma. He has a very intense fear of losing his loved ones, which can be owed to losing 3 brothers by the time he was 25. It’s left him as someone quite easily worried for his loved ones health and safety. One of his other common fears is heights, but that’s also pretty reasonable, due to the fact he. well. he fell off a cliff! He wasn’t pushed on them beforehand, but that really made it a lot worse.
One of his slightly more uncommon fears is elevators. This is probably an offshoot of his fear of heights, but even elevators for two or three story buildings unnerve him. Considering he lives on the top floor of his apartment, this has caused him some trouble in the past. Getting stuck in an elevator – especially on a high floor – has been one of his recurring stress dreams for years.
Do they have any pet peeves?
People who don’t suspend even a little bit of belief for a movie – especially if it’s one he likes. Like, sure, it may not be entirely realistic, but it’s fun! <- he’s a bit of a hypocrite sometimes, because if a movie is depicting a situation he’s been in, he can’t help but take the piss out of it.
I wouldn’t say “rude people” is a pet peeve because it’s. not really LOL but people who constantly have an answer for everything / try to one up someone else at every opportunity. Nick did this in Panama when they first met, and it’s why the two of them hated each other for years. To be fair, Killian was also a prick to him, too.
What are three items you can find in their bedroom?
Passports, travel documents. Some things related to travel that might not be strictly legal, but given his job as an ‘antique collector’ (aka thief / treasure hunter / pickpocket etc), not entirely surprising.
Something one of his nieces or nephews made as a young child – I can see him having a ceramic dish that he puts little things in. It’s a good maybe 20 years old, garish and not very appealing to look at, but he’s fond of it.
A jacket belonging to his older brother, Michael. When he died, his belongings were split among the family. most of his things when to his wife and daughter, but Killian took a handful of things that he had an attachment to, or had nostalgic feelings towards. He keeps the jacket somewhere safe – it doesn’t smell like him, not anymore, but sometimes Killian thinks it does. He also took his and Michael’s old N64 – that’s in his and Nick’s house. is it still working? who knows
What do they notice first in a person?
First thing he really takes stock of is how they introduce themselves. He’s not one to judge based on appearances – he’s very used to people doing that to him, so he knows what it’s like.
He'll notice their mood, their attitude, their attitude towards him, how they regard him, things like that. are they friendly? hostile? having a bad day, but holding it together? or taking it out on him? are they looking down their nose at him? have they already made up misconceptions about him in their head? (this one’s not unreasonable – he’s had more people judge him based on his scars alone than he’s comfortable with.)
On a scale of 1 to 10, how high is their pain tolerance?
Pretty high, in a lot of senses. In one way, he’s very unkind to himself. He doesn’t like to dwell on being in pain, and he tends to be hard on himself – constantly thinking it’s not that bad, and he just needs to get over it. He also hates causing a fuss. He hates worrying people. He doesn’t let himself be taken care of – not without some bitching and moaning first, and insistences that he’s fine, really. he’s Irish 😔
When he doesn’t have something to distract himself with, he copes a lot worse with pain. He’s gotten injured in past jobs and then gone home and cleaned his entire apartment, just for something to take his mind off the pain.
Do they go into fight or flight mode when under pressure? (Or freeze or fawn?)
For most of his life, especially his early life, fight. This has gotten him into way more trouble than it’s worth. later in his life, he tends to freeze, and he hates it. Although, when he freezes, it’s usually in emotional contexts. Conversations he doesn’t want to have. Confrontations of things he’s been trying to ignore. In life or death situations, he knows to move. That’s saved his life more times than he can count.
What animal represents them best?
A dog. I dont give a FUCK if people are sick of ‘dog coded characters’ because Killian IS it makes me really sick to be frank. He’s incredibly, stubbornly loyal. He will do anything for the people he loves. He’s protective, sometimes self harmingly so, and to him, it doesn’t matter how much time passes – he will always be there for someone. If you give him love, he will give it back. At his core, all he wants is to be loved, and feel it. He does get this, thank fuck, but it’s still sickening.
Birds, also. He has a sparrow tattoo on his side – he got it when he was younger. To him, it was symbolism. Free as a bird. He thinks it’s silly now, though.
How would a stranger likely describe them?
Social. Friendly. Warm. He has many friends, multiple circles, and he finds them easy to make. He's a good conversationalist, all he needs is a topic, regardless of if he knows anything about it or not. He’s also a tremendous listener, and these combined with his sociable demeanor make him very approachable to a lot of people.
Do they have any hobbies?
He likes cooking. He’s very good at it, but when he’s not making breakfast, lunch or dinner, he also likes experimenting. Trying new recipes. Pushing himself and improving. He also likes making things from scratch, just to see what he comes up with.
He's a swimmer :) get him on holiday and he’ll spend a non insignificant amount of time in the pool !!! or in the ocean. He just loves the water.
He tries to keep reasonably fit. He's nowhere near Nathan Drake levels of climbing random walls and cliff faces, swinging from vines and ropes and all of that, he'll just find another way up or across, thank you. But he likes to exercise when he can. He's 45 this year, which makes him feel a bit sick, so he'd like to continue his streak of good health. I know he's a beast on a treadmill. Or one of those stair machine things. Man has got insane calves
He's a plant guy!!! His apartment, and later he and Nick's house, is covered in plants. Pots big and small, on counters and hanging from the ceiling alike. He's recently taken to growing food. Nick has heard many complaints about his strawberries being difficult.

Guys. Guys I think in our search for a dad figure in media we all forgot that Ken has like. Never been that great to begin with.
Like he's not evil he's not a bad father nor he is a bad person and he definitely does have good intentions. However if you don't think letting a distressed teen vent to you in despair while you secretly put him on a phone with his partner who you know he has mixed feelings about & just broke up with when you're in a position of trust isn't even a little bit shitty and sus think again.
