10 January 2004, 20 years ago today: The decommissioned U.S. Navy aircraft carrier #USSMidway (CV-41) prepares to moor at its final resting place at Navy Pier where it would later become the largest museum devoted to carriers and naval aviation. The ship was temporarily moored at Naval Air Station North Island during the past week so that preparations could be made to formally present the carrier to the city of San Diego. When commissioned on September 10, 1945 as USS Midway (CVB-41), she was the largest carrier ever put to sea.

"Tugboats and U.S. Navy warships pictured in the Hudson River with the New York City skyline and Central Park in the background on occasion of the Navy Day on October 27, 1945. Pictured at the extreme left of the photograph is USS Midway (CVB-41) and immediately in front of her are USS Enterprise (CV-6) and USS Missouri (BB-63). Smoke lingers over the 'Big E' from the 21-gun salute she rendered to USS Renshaw (DD-499) carrying the U.S. president Harry S. Truman. Renshaw is visible abeam of Midway and is trailed by USS Welles (DD-628) and USS Hobby (DD-610) and USS Finnegan (DE-307)."

The flight deck layouts of the four significant U.S. Navy carrier types over the decade from 1945 to 1955 are shown to scale. From top are the Essex-class USS Intrepid (CV-11) of 1945, Midway-class Midway (CVB-41) of 1946, the never completed USS United States (CVA-58) of 1949, and the Forrestal (CVA-59) of 1955. Note that the angled extensions on the United States do not represent a true angle deck. They only served to launch aircraft, preventing landings during the process. The Forrestal deck, on the other hand, could support simultaneous launchings and landings. (© J. M. Caiella)
