My favorite abhorrent ship upgrade has to be what the US Navy did to three of it's old WW2-era cruisers, turning two Baltimore and one Oregon City-class heavy cruisers into the god-awful Albani class guided missile cruisers.

Just look at them! Basically a fucking apartment building built atop their old hulls.

Airfix New Models File - The Crusader lll Tank. It's full name was the Cruiser MK VI - Crusader (or A.15). This was the Mark lll version of the Crusader which had been upgraded with a 6 pounder gun. Confusingly there was also a Cruiser Mark lll tank (the A.13).

The British 'Cruiser' class of tank tended to be lighter and faster than the 'Infantry' tanks such as the Churchill. To complicate things further there were light Cruisers and heavy Cruisers.

It's kind of hard to keep track of all the WW2 era British tanks but it has likely kept World of Tanks busy.
