I've been missing having an AUX jack to play music, so I spent the last couple of days researching USB C to 3.5mm adapters. I figured I'd share my findings for anyone else who might want an adapter but finds USB C confusing.
If you know your phone has an internal DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) connected to your USB C port, you can get away with a simple adapter sans DAC and save a few dollars.
If you don't have a built-in DAC and are driving standard headphones, the Apple adapter ($9) seems like a great deal for the price and is compatible with most devices. The exception is Android devices, which appear to lack the ability to configure the Apple adapters' DAC volume to be above 50% by default.
So, for Androids, I would suggest the Samsung adapter ($9), which has similar performance.
If you're driving fancier headphones with a high OHM rating, you'll want a beefier DAC, which is outside the scope of what I was looking for.
I ended up buying both the Samsung and the Apple adapters due to the mix of devices in my household. Waiting for them to arrive in the mail.
Based on reviews, there still seems to be some amount of chance involved when it comes to compatibility, but I think this info minimizes the chance of you needing to return something. I'm also skeptical of the durability of these devices, I sort of wish they had some chunkier leads.
Also, here are some reviews I found helpful: And they even have graphs!

I went to Best Buy to get a 1TB drive so I could take all my downloaded TV shows and stuff off my computers/put it all on one drive
a 2TB SSD was on sale so I was like oh I’ll get that
they didn’t have it so I got the 1TB one instead
figured I didn’t have 1TB of that stuff ANYWAY
spend some time moving all my stuff onto the drive
I have MORE than 1TB and most of it I haven’t even watched
#so says Indy#this SSD is crazy#it's USB-C and has an ADAPTER to plug into a non-USB-C device#I haven't tried to plug it into my phone but I bet I can use it as an external for my phone#if I really wanted#day to day with Indy

Really annoyed that PC's aren't really made with optical disc drives anymore, support of old games and DVDs aside, what am I gonna do the next time I don't have a free flash drive?? I used to use a CD-RW as a makeshift USB when in a pinch and knew that every pc could read it even if it was a tad strange.
#dont get me started on the eventual phaseout of USB A; they better make USB C flash drives or im busting out the adapter#ive made it work on my phone when the sd was full and ill do it again#tetranynous.txt#i know the answer is just chuck it on onedrive (free terabyte from uni)#but i just cant come to terms with the death of physical media#and no im not going to carry around a usb cd drive#(i dont own one) since it sort of defeats the convinience of carrying just a disc that can be read anywhere#and at that point id just get a bulk pack of usbs (esp since i can turn them into bootable media nowadays)#anyways this rant was in part becaude i found 80% of a relatively modern pc thrown out that im gonna try to turn into a cad pc#and the motherboard doesnt have a spot for a cd drive#or multiple expansion slots :|#granted it is one of those itty bitty tiny boards (weird) but like do gamers not put multiple gpus (crossfire) in pcs anymore???#although i guess theres integrated now so they already usually have 2; BUT im gonna one up that with a mere thinkpad#(egpu; can put in the expresscard slot; literally just a desktop gpu and power supply)#anyways unpug-ifying that tiny thing and putting it a proper case with proper airflow and a sick paint job nature is healing

Fun fact: Henry Ford wanted to invest profit into the company (~1916? I think? I could be totally wrong on the date) and was sued by shareholders. His goal was charitable, he wanted to employ more people and make sure their jobs paid them enough to “build their lives and homes.” But the Dodge brothers, who owned about 10% stock in Ford, took him to court when Ford announced his intention to invest the majority of profit into “the company” (meaning mostly those employed by it).
The Dodge brother won. The case established that in the US, a company’s responsibility is not to the public, not to the employees, but to the shareholders. Their job is to make sure the shareholders profit.
So... Yeah. Tech isn’t about the wants of the people anymore. Nefarious practices like forced obsolescence and Smart Fridges and reduced options are intentional because they’re the most likely to gain profit, which goes right into the shareholders’ pockets. And if the company tries to do things that reduce that profit, that help the public or employees instead, they can be sued by shareholders and lose out on a ton of money and potentially the company.
