Kelly Rissman and Ariana Baio at The Independent:
President Donald Trump announced a new path to U.S. citizenship: a pricey gold card. The U.S. is going to “sell” gold cards for $5 million, Trump announced in the Oval Office Tuesday. “We're going to be putting a price on that card of about $5 million and that's going to give you [permanent resident] Green Card privileges, plus it's going to be a route to citizenship,” the president said. He branded it as “somewhat like a Green Card but at a higher level of sophistication.” “Wealthy people will be coming into our country by buying this card,” he continued. “They'll be wealthy and they'll be successful and they'll be spending a lot of money and paying a lot of taxes and employing a lot of people. And we think it's going to be extremely successful and never been done before.”
Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick clarified the Trump administration plans to terminate a somewhat similar EB-5 Immigrant Investor Program and “replace it with the Trump gold card.” The EB-5 program allows investors to apply for permanent residence in the U.S. if they “make the necessary investment in a commercial enterprise in the United States” and plan to create or preserve 10 permanent full-time jobs. Lutnick said the EB-5 program was “full of nonsense, make-believe and fraud” claiming it was poorly managed. “It was a way to get a green card that was low priced, Lutnick said. Once vetted, gold card holders “can invest in America and we can use that money to reduce our deficit,” he added. While the gold card visas are a slight shift from the EB-5 program, they are not an unprecedented idea. Other countries such as the United Kingdom, Spain, Greece, Malta, Australia, Canada and Italy have had similar programs.
[...] When asked if there would be restrictions on people from certain countries such as Iran or China the president said they likely would not restrict countries but would evaluate individual people. Trump was then asked if Russian oligarchs could qualify to which he responded, “Possibly. I know some Russian oligarchs who are very nice people.” The Kushner family was sharply criticized eight years ago after the sister of Jared Kushner, then senior White House adviser to his father-in-laws Donald Trump, traveled to Beijing to tempt wealthy Chinese with an EB-5 Green Card with an investment in one of the Kushner family’s real estate projects — an offer that a former White House ethics lawyer under George. W. Bush called “corruption, pure and simple.” The new citizenship pathway comes as the Trump administration cracks down on immigration into the U.S.
Another asinine idea by Traitor Tot.

Frustrating when a VC-funded company gets credit for being the "first" and the "leader," when they had a sub-component demo the same week we had a full-system demo. Like, we are easily 5-10 years ahead of them, it's ridiculous; their approach isn't even yet proven to work. But they get science youtubers talking about them.
Because they're VC-funded, they have a marketing/press department.
And because we're an employee-owned company working off of government contracts, well, most government contracts get slapped with an ITAR label (an old Cold-War-era law saying basically sharing scientific information counts as illegally selling arms/munitions). So if you want to publicize your work, including your company's products, you have to appeal that label. (Universities have specifically negotiated a blanket exemption, so if you spend your whole life in academic science you might never even know about this.)
(My previous employer filed those appeals several times a year in order to do press releases and publish journal articles and apply for patents. I think every single information-release appeal they filed went through, because there's no reason any of this stuff should be labeled as arms--it's literally the same stuff universities are doing. My current employer is afraid to, which I think is wrong-headed; at worst they'll just say no, and anyway, our non-restricted competitors are giving fucking lab tours to youtubers.)
#these restrictions mean you also can't have employees on visas working on these projects#my previous employer tried to appeal that too and failed--they were only able to appeal the dissemination of information part#so we had locked labs that my international coworkers weren't allowed in#(one got a green card and was allowed in eventually)#ironically the VC-funded company is doing it the same way I did it in my PhD thesis#two other people at the company did this stuff in their post-docs#all of us are over 40 (one guy is over 50 I'm pretty sure) so this is not a new technique--I got two MINOR papers on it 16 years ago#the MAJOR papers are like 25 years old#and we're all convinced it's NOT the right approach#granted the technique we are using is about 30 years old#in my literal thesis defense one of my committee members asked why I was using the technique the VC companies are now using#and if I had done the math to prove it was superior to the older technique#and I was like--everyone knows the new technique is superior that's why it's trendy#and my advisor (who was a genius) said the same thing and that it wasn't a fair question#but the guy who asked it was an ancient theorist who REALLY knew what he was talking about#and in retrospect he was completely right--I should have done the math comparing the techniques and the older technique IS better#a few weeks into my job here I did the math and found that if you use the BEST version of the new technique--one that only one group#has demonstrated can even be done and they didn't get all the way to the point of demonstrating an application like this#and you assume some generous efficiency numbers#it breaks even with the old technique#that's not what this VC group is doing so... not a chance lol

My favorite part about being obsessed with something is that you start looking for it everywhere. Especially in media that shares actors with the thing you’re obsessed with.
So thanks to the idea from one feralheartedalien here on tumblr and my current watching of A Quiet Place: Day One, I’m suddenly being roped into the Steddie Alternate Universe with Eric and Keys.
------ Minor "A Quiet Place: Day One" Spoilers after this point ------
Haven’t watched Free Guy in a while, but the dynamic is kinda sticking with me. Struggling, emotionally repressed, desperate, foreign exchange law student Eric, coming to the States for school due to parental pressure (can’t have a Steddie-like ship without some shitty parents). Redeemed bully, people pleaser, hopeless romantic, lonely Keys, trying to make something out of his love for programming and design while under his repressive boss (can’t have a Steddie-like ship without some doomed ambition).
Maybe next floor neighbors, Eric living right above Keys. He comes back to his basically empty apartment after school every day exhausted, collapsing on the carpet in his living room at 2am, lulled to sleep by the soft, muffled music in the place beneath him. Meanwhile, Keys only plays his "falling asleep" music when he's home, in hopes to calm the person above him, who has a habit of frequent pacing, self monologues, and unfortunately, breakdowns.
Maybe Eric just has a shit day at school one day; stressful projects, lack of progress in his studying, sleep deprived, and it’s absolutely fucking pouring on his way back home. Maybe Keys has accidentally memorized his neighbor’s schedule, accidentally began to care, and noticed how late it is. Maybe their floors are different but the rooms are the same, so when Eric pushes the wrong floor on the elevator, he ends up at Keys’s room. Breaks down when his key doesn’t work, falls to his knees in the hallway muffling sobs. Barely reacts when Keys opens his door because he’s so tired and cold and numb. Weakly tries to fight Keys’s attempts at help but nearly faints in this stranger’s arms. Eric finally lets himself be helped, loses himself in Keys’s thick blankets and soft music and well meaning rambling and killer hot chocolate-
Maybe that’s when Eric realizes how much this man has saved his life, and vows to return the favor.
#hi hello aqp:do is awesome and so is quinn and nyong’o like guys you fuckin killed it#you even inspired me to draw for it that’s a movie’s highest honor#and it’s steddie art no less !!! amazing work you two all the awards#anyway i may have accidentally fallen in love with the steddie multiverse so boom Keys x Eric (aka Padlock bc that’s a cool ship name imo)#and bc my brain can never leave anything they do get angst yayyyy !!!!#they’re pining but keys doesn’t wanna fall in love bc eric’s visa to study in the us will end eventually and they would be split up#meanwhile eric wants to make the best of his law school years before going home to get a green card#im too busy to work this out rn but maybe one day#take art for now :]#free guy#a quiet place day one#walter keys mckey#keys mckey#eric a quiet place day one#technically#stranger things au#steddie au#steddie#steve x eddie#keys x eric#making it a tag yall bc i think this ship should be more known and maybe expanded on#also slight dumb by eli again#aqpdo spoilers

Trump introduces a green card for the rich: the gold card
President Trump said he is planning to introduce a new visa to attract rich foreigners to America — something he is calling a "gold card."
For $5 million, people will be able to apply to become lawful permanent residents. Trump said the program would be rolled out in two weeks, would bring in "very high-level people," and said the proceeds from the program could help pay down the deficit.
"It's going to be a route to citizenship, and wealthy people will be coming into our country by buying this card. They'll be wealthy, and they'll be successful, and they'll be spending a lot of money and paying a lot of taxes," Trump told reporters at an unrelated event in the Oval Office on Tuesday.

So it doesn't actually matter if you were born here or come from the right "bloodline" because if you have enough $ (apparently 5 million dollars) you can buy your citizenship.

US H1B & Green Card Made Easy for Indians on J-1 Visa: Two-Year Residency Rule Removed.
The US has recently announced a groundbreaking update for J-1 visa holders, particularly benefiting Indian and Chinese nationals. Starting December 9, 2024, the two-year home residency rule for J-1 visa holders is no longer mandatory. This policy shift, part of the updated US Exchange Visitor Skills List, simplifies pathways to H-1B visas and Green Cards for skilled professionals.
Table of Contents
Introduction
What is the US Exchange Visitor Skills List?
Key Changes in J-1 Visa Policy
Benefits for J-1 Visa Holders
Impact on Employers and Immigration Trends
How Wave Visas Can Help

1. Introduction
The recent revision to the US Exchange Visitor Skills List marks a significant shift in immigration policies. For the first time in 15 years, the US Department of State has removed the two-year residency requirement for J-1 visa holders from 34 countries, including India and China. This change opens new opportunities for those looking to transition to H-1B visas or permanent residency (Green Cards) in the US.
2. What is the US Exchange Visitor Skills List?
The US Exchange Visitor Skills List identifies fields critical to national development. Historically, J-1 visa holders in these fields were required to return to their home countries for two years before applying for other US visas or permanent residency.
Key Updates Include:
Nations with higher income levels no longer have critical skill shortages.
High immigration rates reduce the need for strict return requirements.
Advancements in education, technology, and healthcare shifted focus away from some regions.
3. Key Changes in J-1 Visa Policy
The two-year home residency rule is now waived for J-1 visa holders from 34 countries.
The update allows J-1 holders to directly apply for H-1B visas or Green Cards without securing a waiver.
Non-cap H-1B visas can now be issued for J-1 holders sponsored by US universities or research institutions.
4. Benefits for J-1 Visa Holders
This policy revision is especially advantageous for professionals in STEM, healthcare, and engineering.
Easier transition to H-1B visas or Green Cards.
No reliance on home-country residency waivers.
Greater opportunities for long-term employment and research roles in the US.
5. Impact on Employers and Immigration Trends
US employers, especially in technology and healthcare, now have broader access to highly skilled international talent. This change enables:
Universities and research institutions to sponsor J-1 visa holders more effectively.
Employers to hire professionals without competing in the annual H-1B lottery.
Strengthened workforce diversity in critical sectors.
