Hey so, don’t do this!
I’m not dropping their URLs for obvious reasons (They’re both clearly newly made blogs anyway, possibly because they knew what they were doing was rude) but this is the absolute WORST attitude to have. There is so much to unpack here. and it’s kind of a bit comical. This got kind of long, so I’m putting the rest under a cut.
First off, just because you used the word ‘please’ does not mean you’re being nice or have any manners whatsoever. Second, asking a stranger you never talked to before for something, giving them a deadline of a few days, then telling them to ‘be quick’ and that you ‘need’ something from them is actually so so so insane. I learned that lesson when I was twelve, the first year I had access to the internet. Technically, I learned it before then, because the same rules apply in real life. You don’t talk to strangers that way in real life. Too many people online have this idea that societal rules, general kindness and basic empathy don’t apply once they go online, and it’s one of the worst things that has ever happened to the internet. Also, what the hell do you ‘need’ unreleased demos for? Like, genuinely. I can’t even come up with anything as a joke. And uh, “Girl I know you’re active.” Huh??? I don’t care that you know I’m active, I’m not giving you anything regardless of how chronically online I am since you came off so harsh and demanding right from the start. For the next message, I’m assuming they meant ‘pick up the pace’ which, again, is demanding something from a complete stranger who owes you nothing. So no, I’m not giving anything to anyone who feels entitled enough to demand something from a stranger so brazenly. No one in the unreleased community, or any community I can think of, is willing to share things that they have spent years collecting to someone who demands like this.
As for the second person, I’ll admit, I at least have to admire their dedication. A few messages (the screenshot doesn’t show all of them) spanning across two and a half weeks before they eventually gave up. Kind of like a crazy guy on Tinder constantly messaging someone who has ghosted them due to their obsessive behavior. And that’s what this is! Obsessive behavior! I get being obsessed with Taylor Swift and her unreleased stuff; I am too! But it is not normal to demand for someone’s entire library that they spent over a decade collecting, especially someone that you have never messaged before.
I’d like to add: I know I don’t own any of Taylor’s demos. None of the live recordings, remixes, unreleased, demos, or anything of the sort are truly mine. But that does not mean I didn’t put effort into getting them. So much of my library is ripped from YouTube way back in 2013 with a YouTube to MP3 converter, then dragging it into iTunes and editing the metadata track by track, then photoshopping and editing pictures so I can make album covers for them. Some of my audios are from Vimeo (does that even still exist?) and converted into MP3s. Some of my library is downloaded from Tumblr also over ten years ago from blogs that have since been deactivated. Some of my library comes from sketchy MediaFire files that I had to go through one of those weird shortened links that redirect you to the actual download page. I’ve used so many ad blockers and malware protection programs over the years to get so much into my library. And it’s not even easy to share either. Obviously it’s copyrighted, and although I have a personal Google Drive I keep a ton of backups in for half of the files on my computer, I don’t want that to get taken down if I share music through it, and it would. Even websites like Mega eventually (slowly) catches on and deletes your files and gives you a warning. A few of those and your account is gone.
I’m not trying to be rude, but I’m not rewarding awful behavior. I’ve done enough of that and have learned my lesson. I hope these kinds of people can learn, too. I truthfully think these kinds of people should spend a year or so doing it themselves: scouring the internet for carefully guarded files, having to go through the trial and error of this sort of hobby, having to go through the whole ‘malware or audio file’ game, possibly having people say they want to be friends with you just for them to leave once you send what you’ve collected. My point is that it’s not effortless. You do not google ‘Taylor Swift unreleased download’ and get everything I or other collectors have. And you do not get anything from said collectors by stalking their account to see if they’re active and telling them to ‘pick up the pace’ when they don’t send it in the time you allocated for them without their agreement. Just be respectful to those you want something from. Don’t use people. Be compassionate and considerate. Don’t be like… this.

Surge in Credential Compromises Driven by Social Engineering Attacks
A staggering 92% of organizations experienced an average of six credential compromises caused by email-based social engineering attacks in 2023, according to a new report by cybersecurity firm Barracuda. These insidious tactics, which prey on human vulnerabilities, continued dominating the threat landscape, with scamming and phishing accounting for 86% of all social engineering attacks last year.
Emerging Trends in Social Engineering Techniques
Conversation Hijacking: A Sophisticated Impersonation Ploy While conversation hijacking, a technique where attackers compromise business accounts through phishing and monitor communications to craft convincing messages, accounted for only 0.5% of social engineering attacks in 2023, it represents a staggering 70% increase compared to the previous year. This sophisticated tactic allows cybercriminals to gather sensitive information about deals, payment procedures, and other operational details, impersonating trusted entities and tricking victims into authorizing fraudulent transactions or updating payment information. Business Email Compromise (BEC): A Persistent Threat Business email compromise (BEC) attacks, where hackers impersonate executives to trick employees into transferring funds or sensitive data, remained a prominent threat in 2023. These attacks accounted for 10.6% of all social engineering incidents, up from 8% in 2022, highlighting the persistent allure of this lucrative technique for cyber criminals. Extortion: Holding Data Hostage for Ransom Another alarming trend involved extortion attacks, where cybercriminals threaten to expose sensitive or embarrassing content to their victims' contacts unless a ransom is paid. These attacks accounted for 2.7% of the total social engineering attacks in 2023, underscoring the growing prevalence of this nefarious tactic.
Exploiting Legitimate Services for Malicious Gain
The report also sheds light on the evolving use of legitimate services by attackers to target employees through social engineering techniques. Gmail emerged as the most commonly abused email domain, accounting for a staggering 22% of all attacks last year. Other popular free webmail services exploited by hackers included Outlook (2%), Hotmail (1%), iCloud (1%), and Mail.com (1%), while all other domains accounted for 73% of attacks. Notably, attacks originating from Gmail domains were heavily skewed towards BEC, with over 50% of such attacks falling into this category, followed by scamming at 43%.
Malicious URL Obfuscation through Shortening Services Cybercriminals also demonstrated a growing reliance on popular commercial URL shortening services to embed malicious links in phishing emails, effectively disguising the true nature and destination of these links. The most widely used shortening service in 2023 was bit.ly, leveraged in nearly 40% of attacks involving shortened URLs. X's (formerly Twitter) shortening service came in second, utilized in 16% of such attacks, marking a significant shift from 2020 when it accounted for around two-thirds (64%) of these attacks.
The Rise of QR Code Phishing Attacks
Another notable development in the realm of social engineering was the significant rise in QR code phishing attacks towards the end of 2023. Approximately 5% of mailboxes were targeted with these attacks in the final quarter of the year, a concerning trend highlighting cybercriminals' ever-evolving tactics. In these attacks, cybercriminals embed QR codes in phishing emails, prompting unsuspecting users to scan the code and visit a fake page masquerading as a trusted service or application. These pages are designed to trick users into downloading malware or entering their login credentials, effectively compromising their accounts and data. Evading Traditional Security Measures QR code attacks pose a unique challenge as they circumvent traditional email filtering methods, which rely on detecting embedded links or malicious attachments. Furthermore, these attacks leverage personal devices, such as phones or tablets, which are often not protected by corporate security software, providing cybercriminals with a potential entry point into organizational networks and systems. Do you have any resources you reccomend for researching more about DID? Or like, key words to search for to find academic articles? Thanks!
i prefer to give people the tools do their own research more than anything else, so i'll start with that.
google scholar, zlibrary and openlibrary, as well as sci-hub.
i'm specifically linking zlibrary there because zlibrary has been taken down before, and there are now scam websites masquerading as the actual zlibrary to take advantage of people for things like bitcoin and phishing scams. there's one specific way to access zlibrary and to make an account if you don't have one, and it's through that link. ONLY trust that link. not zlib.io or zlib.is or any similar wrong urls. there's a list at the top of the *correct* website's page that'll show which domains are not trustworthy.
sci-hub is a website where you input the DOI (digital object identifier) into the website and if they have the paper being requested, they will give it to you to download, for free. the DOI can typically be found at the top of a page, but if you're on a computer, which WILL make this much easier, then you can just control+F and search DOI to find it more easily. older research may not have a DOI, don't be discouraged by that and ignore it if you can't find it on sci-hub or there's no DOI.
with that out of the way, i'll give you some papers and show you how to use them.
go into google scholar. the papers you should look for are titled something along the lines of "dissociative identity disorder - an empirical overview" and "examining 6 myths about dissociative identity disorder". just toss those, or even just "dissociative identity disorder", into the google scholar search and read them.
when you're done reading a paper, go into the references section of the paper and look at the references used. look for anything that seems interesting and copy and paste the name of that source material into sci-hub or z-library (usually it'll say if it's a book or an article). then read through that source material, go into the references section, rinse and repeat until your brain is huge and full of knowledge.
i personally have an external hard drive. of the many things i keep on there, my DID research library is one of them. i recommend keeping a USB to keep the research on, and most importantly:
don't forget to label and organize your files so you can search through them easily. personally i organize them in the following manner: ((shortened) title)-(author)-(year). makes it so much easier to sift through everything, just trust me.
hope that helps!

What to do with your Twitter archive
I requested my Twitter archive yesterday and downloaded it today, all 1.77 GB as a ZIP file.
Great. So I asked myself now that I have it: What can I import my Twitter archive data to?
That got me to this nice Guide to “How to preserve your personal Twitter archive” from the Bitsgalore (digital preservation - file formats) site.
It’s great! Not only does it cover getting the archive (already done), but it walks you through various shortcomings and annoyances in the format of the downloaded archive. For example, links in the tweet archive are their t.co-URL-shortened versions, but the expanded and display URLs are available elsewhere in the archive. The Guide covers tools that can fix this and many, many other issues. It also provides links to other approaches and, extremely useful, covers some options on how to present tweets from your archive if that’s what you are looking to do.
All good stuff. It was first published on November 20, 2022, and it has been updated through December 15, 2022. As the guide notes, the development of tools like archive parser currently moves at a pretty fast pace.

10 Awesome Internet Facts
Here are ten internet – related facts and milestones that have helped shaped connectivity across the South Africa, Africa, and the Earth.
It was in 1974, when the term “internet” was first used as a shortened term for “internetworking” (lame, right?) . At the time, there were several internets, as they referred to collections of linked networks.
The internet emerged in ’89 when a programmer named Tim Berners – Lee wrote the code for the first web browser called World Wide Web along with the standards for HTML, HTTP and URLs. The world also saw it’s first internet service providers (ISPs) starting at the same year. In the US, the first commercial dial-up ISP called ‘The World’ was started in 1989.
Rhodes University located in Makhanda, Eastern Cape, South Africa received the first South African IP Address in ’88.
In ’90, the internet corporation for assigned names and numbers granted South Africa the country code top-level domain .za.
South Africa’s internet user base grew from 2.4 million in 2000, to 5 million in 2008 to 12.3 million in 2012. In January 2021, this number grew to 38.13 million or close to 60% of the population, by contrast, Africa’s average internet penetration is just under 50%
Africa’s first broadband submarine cable system was launched by SEACOM in 2009. The 17 000 kilometers submarine cable connects African countries like South Africa, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania etc. to the internet.
In 2017, China had 756 million people connected to the internet, and India, 391 million people connected to the internet so basically Asia accounts for almost half of the world’s active internet users!
Gauteng is the province with the most access to the internet with 72.2% of the population connected and growing, while Limpopo is the province with the least number of people connected to the internet with 42.6% of the population connected to the internet and growing.
The average fixed broadband download speed in SA is 50 mbps which is an increase from when it was 46 mbps in May 2021. As fibre infrastructure in being rolled out and capacity improved, this number is expected to keep climbing.
The most popular website is…. You guessed it. Google. Facebook is the world’s favorite social media platform with 2.8 billion monthly users and growing.

we have link de-shorteners (just resolves it like dereferencing for URLs) but a link tester would be interesting.
I suppose a container/VM and loading it in the relevant browser/downloader/client is the simplest method.
but a more diagnostic tool would be interesting. another one for the long list of projects I don't have time for yet d:

It's wild that Google is single-handedly responsible for this, and that's not an exaggeration. Google wanted to get into the hardware and operating system business, and more importantly they wanted to steer that business into a non-local always-online cloud based model. So they invented the chromebook and subsidized the hell out of basically giving them to the public school systems.
And those school systems, so financially destitute, so barely capable of keeping the lights on and the staff paid, how could they refuse? Suddenly they don't have to spend budgets on computer labs, and now every single public school student has a laptop. So from a very rudimentary perspective the children have more computer skills than ever, after all they're USING a computer to do ALL of their school work.
It isn't that this generation of young people doesn't know how to use computers or digital systems, it's that every interface they've ever interacted with is a WALLED GARDEN, a closed system, an individual app with it's own inputs and outputs and menus and settings that doesn't interface with any others.
And these web-based walled gardens are intentionally designed to DISCOURAGE the import and export of data in agnostic neutral discrete formats. The systems either communicate with each other over sophisticated API connections through a single google, apple, or facebook account or THEY DON'T. It either spits out a link that the other system is smart enough to interface with or it doesn't. It still feels insane that a tumblr post can't embed a tiktok, so we literally download and then upload the raw video data!
When we ask them to take a piece of paper and get it to this person hundreds of miles away it's like a Model T mechanic explaining to us how to crank the carborater and prime the fuel and mix the oil into the gasoline. Our reaction to that isn't, "Oh my education failed to teach me how to drive a car", our reaction to that is your car is fucking old and it sucks, all I should have to do is put it in drive, why the hell isn't my transcript just a shortened url stored on my school's website? Why is my name and birth date and social security number not enough information for this god damned sophisticated institution to get my transcript from my school? Why is it more difficult to share my transcript with a school that's half an hour away than it is to share a tiktok with someone in Japan? Why can't I use the login that I've used for 12 years to submit my homework to my teachers with, the body of work which is literally what my transcript summarizes, to login to YOUR system and approve the transfer?
They don't just not know how to export data into discrete cubes that can be imported into other systems, they think our cubes are dumb and old. And in one sense they are right, and it isn't their fault that the better more sophisticated methods of sharing data between systems is fucking monetized and data mined and surveyed by the government from here to hell and back. The reason we cling to these old systems is because they aren't smart, they are dumb in both senses of the word. The fact that they are inheriting a world where smarter systems are more oppressive isn't their fault.
seriously, though. i work in higher education, and part of my job is students sending me transcripts. you'd think the ones who have the least idea how to actually do that would be the older ones, and while sure, they definitely struggle with it, i see it most with the younger students. the teens to early 20s crowd.
very, astonishingly often, they don't know how to work with .pdf documents. i get garbage phone screenshots, sometimes inserted into an excel or word file for who knows what reason, but most often it's just a raw .jpg or other image file.
they definitely either don't know how to use a scanner, don't have access to one, or don't even know where they might go for that (staples and other office supply stores sometimes still have these services, but public libraries always have your back, kids.) so when they have a paper transcript and need to send me a copy electronically, it's just terrible photos at bad angles full of thumbs and text-obscuring shadows.
mind bogglingly frequently, i get cell phone photos of computer screens. they don't know how to take a screenshot on a computer. they don't know the function of the Print Screen button on the keyboard. they don't know how to right click a web page, hit "print", and choose "save as PDF" to produce a full and unbroken capture of the entirety of a webpage.
sometimes they'll just copy the text of a transcript and paste it right into the message of an email. that's if they figure out the difference between the body text portion of the email and the subject line, because quite frankly they often don't.
these are people who in most cases have done at least some college work already, but they have absolutely no clue how to utilize the attachment function in an email, and for some reason they don't consider they could google very quickly for instructions or even videos.
i am not taking a shit on gen z/gen alpha here, i'm really not.
what i am is aghast that they've been so massively failed on so many levels. the education system assumed they were "native" to technology and needed to be taught nothing. their parents assumed the same, or assumed the schools would teach them, or don't know how themselves and are too intimidated to figure it out and teach their kids these skills at home.
they spend hours a day on instagram and tiktok and youtube and etc, so they surely know (this is ridiculous to assume!!!) how to draft a formal email and format the text and what part goes where and what all those damn little symbols means, right? SURELY they're already familiar with every file type under the sun and know how to make use of whatever's salient in a pinch, right???
THEY MUST CERTAINLY know, innately, as one knows how to inhale, how to type in business formatting and formal communication style, how to present themselves in a way that gets them taken seriously by formal institutions, how to appear and be competent in basic/standard digital skills. SURELY. Of course. RIGHT!!!!
it's MADDENING, it's insane, and it's frustrating from the receiving end, but even more frustrating knowing they're stumbling blind out there in the digital spaces of grown-up matters, being dismissed, being considered less intelligent, being talked down to, because every adult and system responsible for them just
ASSUMED they should "just know" or "just figure out" these important things no one ever bothered to teach them, or half the time even introduce the concepts of before asking them to do it, on the spot, with high educational or professional stakes.
kids shouldn't have to supplement their own education like this and get sneered and scoffed at if they don't.

Massive Malware Campaigns Infiltrate Docker Hub, Deploying Millions of Malicious Containers
JFrog's security research team has uncovered three large-scale malware campaigns infiltrating Docker Hub, a platform facilitating Docker image development, collaboration, and distribution. These campaigns have deployed millions of malicious "imageless" containers, exploiting Docker Hub's community features. Docker Hub hosts a staggering 12.5 million repositories, but according to JFrog, approximately 25% serve no useful functionality. Instead, they act as vehicles for spam, pirated content promotion, and malware dissemination, posing a significant threat to unsuspecting users.
Exploiting Community Features: Malicious Documentation Pages
The attack on Docker Hub exploited its community features, allowing users to publish repositories with only documentation pages, devoid of actual container images. Disguised as legitimate content, these documentation pages lead users to phishing and malware-hosting websites, putting their systems at risk.
Three Major Malware Campaigns Identified
Through an analysis of Docker Hub image creation patterns over the past five years, the research team identified over four million imageless repositories, constituting 37% of all public repositories. Further investigation revealed three main malware campaigns: - Downloader Campaign: Offers pirated content and game cheats as bait. - eBook Phishing Campaign: Lures users with free eBook downloads to steal credit card information. - Website Campaign: Characterized by randomly generated repositories with benign descriptions. Each campaign employed distinct tactics to evade detection, such as URL shorteners and open redirect bugs. The payloads of these campaigns, predominantly Trojans, communicated with command-and-control (C2) servers to download additional malware and execute persistent tasks on infected systems.
Call for Enhanced Moderation and Community Involvement
These findings highlight the need for enhanced moderation on Docker Hub and greater community involvement in detecting and mitigating malicious activity. Andrey Polkovnichenko, security researcher at JFrog, warned, "The most concerning aspect of these three campaigns is that there is not a lot that users can do to protect themselves at the outset other than exercising caution." Polkovnichenko added, "These threat actors are highly motivated and are hiding behind the credibility of the Docker Hub name to lure victims. As Murphy's Law suggests, if malware developers can exploit something, it inevitably will be, so we expect that these campaigns can be found in more repositories than just Docker Hub." How to Make a QR Code for a Link
How to Make a QR Code for a Link: A Comprehensive Guide
QR codes have become ubiquitous in our digital age, offering a convenient and efficient way to share information. Whether you're a business owner, marketer, or just someone looking to share a URL easily, creating a QR code for a link can be incredibly useful. This guide will walk you through the steps to make a QR code for a link, ensuring it's functional, appealing, and optimized for search engines.
What is a QR Code?
A QR code (Quick Response code) is a type of two-dimensional barcode that can store a significant amount of information. They can be scanned using a smartphone camera or a dedicated QR code reader, making them a versatile tool for quickly accessing information, websites, and more.
Why Use a QR Code for a Link?
Steps to Create a QR Code for a Link
1. Choose a QR Code Generator
Selecting a reliable QR code generator is the first step. Here are some popular options:
QR Code Generator: Offers a user-friendly interface with plenty of customization options.
QR Stuff: Provides a wide range of data types and customization features.
GoQR.me: A straightforward tool for basic QR code creation.
QRickit: Allows for various QR code types and color customization.
Choose a generator that fits your needs based on ease of use, customization options, and additional features like tracking and analytics.
2. Enter the URL
Once you've chosen a QR code generator, enter the URL you want to encode. Ensure the URL is correct and accessible. If the URL is particularly long, consider using a URL shortener (e.g., Bitly or TinyURL) to simplify the QR code and improve its scanability.
3. Customize Your QR Code
Many QR code generators offer customization options to make your QR code visually appealing and aligned with your branding. Customization options may include:
Color: Change the color of the QR code to match your brand colors.
Logo: Add a logo or image to the center of the QR code.
Design: Adjust the shape of the QR code’s corners and patterns.
While customization can make your QR code stand out, ensure that the changes do not affect its readability.
4. Test Your QR Code
Before distributing your QR code, it's crucial to test it with multiple devices and QR code readers to ensure it works correctly. Scan the code using different smartphones and QR code apps to verify that it directs users to the intended link without any issues.
5. Download and Share Your QR Code
Once you’re satisfied with your QR code, download it in the appropriate format (PNG, SVG, or EPS). High-resolution formats are preferable for printing, while lower-resolution formats are suitable for digital use. Distribute your QR code through various channels, such as:
Print Media: Business cards, flyers, posters, brochures, product packaging.
Digital Media: Websites, email signatures, social media, digital ads.
