I don't think the tragic outcome of this whole 'Missing Titanic Submarine' debacle came as a surprise to anyone. The submersible having imploded was always going to be the most likely outcome of this story, and the worst part is that it was entirely preventable.
The attached article was written in 1987, two years after the wreck was discovered. At the time there were still a number of survivors alive, and as the article details, their wishes were for the wreck to be left in peace. They were ignored then and they are ignored even more so now that they have passed on. Since the last survivors passed away and the calls for their family and friends' graves to be left in peace died with them, the exploitation of the wreck has only ever worsened.
The Titanic wreck is not a tourist attraction. It is the grave site of over 1500 people, and now the resting place of five more souls. For years the wreck has been exploited by treasure hunters scavenging artefacts from the seabed to sell for profit, and treated as a tourist attraction to be ogled at by those willing to pay the right price.
That being said, scientists and historians have visited the wreck site for years in well-made, safety-tested submersibles. They have treated the ship with the respect its victims deserve and many have left memorial plaques and held prayer services once their work at the site was done. A world away from the rickety tin can OceanGate charged a small fortune to risk their lives inside for a snapshot of them smiling next to the iconic ship's bow through a dinner plate-sized window. A venture which has now taken the lives of five people, the first deep sea exploration fatality of its kind.
If there is one thing that comes out of this whole story, I hope it is the introduction of tighter controls over access to the wreck.
Admittedly, this is probably wishful thinking on my part. The Titanic wreck lies in international waters and so no one has the automatic power to control access to it. But in light of this entirely preventable tragedy, I hope that at the very least the grim tourist trade of billionaires ogling at the graves of 1500 souls comes to an end, as a result of the negative association following the OceanGate incident if nothing else.
Titanic deserves to rest in peace. Leave her alone.
