Hi, I'm working on an Avatar OC. She is a relatively strong waterbender who gets into an accident that paralyzes her from the waist down. It's the kind of paralysis where there is no danger in someone else moving her legs around for her, but her brain is unable to control her leg muscles itself. She ends up secretly learning how to bloodbend, and decides to use it to help make her walk by bloodbending her own legs (a process which takes a long while to learn, but gradually becomes more second nature after a year of constant practice).
I thought it would be a cool way of utilizing bloodbending in a positive way rather than a negative way, however, I realize this may fall into the "curing disabilities with magic" or "disability basically non-existent due to powers" tropes. If my OC's waterbending is taken away or significantly weakened, then she can't move her legs anymore, and walking still requires quite a bit of concentration (and more advanced movements like running are even harder). But I'm still concerned. Any advice on how to make this work without perpetuating harmful tropes?
Hi!
My first advice before getting to the superpower curing thing would be to thoroughly research spinal cord injuries. It's basically unheard of to only be paralyzed below the waist with no other symptoms. An SCI could be complete, incomplete, and then it has specific levels - sometimes people assume that it's either "below the neck" or "below the waist" but there's a whole more that can happen. For the purpose of this ask, I'm going to assume that she has a complete spinal cord injury on the lower thoracic level, maybe T9 to T12. If it's higher (like T6 or above), you should definitely research autonomic dysreflexia as well.
I'm glad that you caught this! I would classify this as a cure thing, or at least cure-adjacent.
I'm not certain how bloodbending her own legs would work - unless she was manipulating her whole body like a marionette, I don't think it would help much? I don't remember how exactly it worked in Avatar, but she would need her leg and hip muscles to actually contract (or at least consistently spasm) to bear her weight, or they would just bend underneath her. Her legs would probably be atrophied, so it'd be even harder.
None of this means you can't have her bloodbend to make her life easier while still leaving her disabled! There's definitely things that could work for her while also being more authentic to the issues she could have, rather than just un-disabling her.
One of the problems that she would have - that's also related to blood flow - would be pressure sores. It's basically when there's prolonged pressure on part of the skin and eventually tissue death occurs, if it's not treated it's lethal. As you can guess, it's a huge problem when it happens and it's even worse when you can't feel a sore like this forming in the first place. She could make her life much easier and safer by learning how to push her blood everywhere to make sure she doesn't, you know, die. This is huge and genuinely life-changing, just not as spectacular as being able to walk with paralyzed legs I guess. She could maybe learn to bend her blood specifically to prevent this - she would learn of this being a possible problem very early on - and thus realize that bloodbending can be a positive and life-saving tool?
There are also scenarios where moving legs via bloodbending could be helpful! Legs weight a lot, and it can be a pain to move them around when transferring. Rather than having her manually grab them to get out of/into her wheelchair, she could just bloodbend her legs to be where they need to go. This omits the problem of her lower body probably not being able to hold her weight.
If she has complete paraplegia, she will have issues with her bladder - she could probably use her bending for that as well? If you don't want to go into a lot of detail, you can have her just empty the leg bag via waterbending. I imagine that being able to manage that whole process in a much faster way would be helpful for her!
These are just a few suggestions - I definitely encourage you to look deeper into spinal cord injuries and their symptoms, and think of some creative ways for her bending to help her other than making her walk!

Greetings and salutations! Most people writing in say that it’s their first time doing so. I admit, that isn’t quite the case for me. I sent in a letter back in 1942, asking about whether or not I should medically transition—though of course the terminology was a bit different then.
I admit, I don’t remember the specifics of your response, but whatever it was, within twelve months I was taking testosterone pills. And I’ve been on HRT since then! It’ll be eighty years come January. I suppose I’m what you might call an elder in the community, though I certainly don’t look it.
That’s sort of why that I’m writing to you again. As you know, most genuses age getting older, but some age getting younger. My genus, whatever it is, does a combination of the two. I aged normally from when I was born til when I was 73. At that point, I died, spent about a day and a half decomposing, a day and a half un-decomposing, and then popped up out of my casket! My relatives were… surprised, to say the least. I think we all were. Regardless, I grew younger at the same rate until I was seven years and four months old, and then boomeranged and started growing older again. I’m currently in my third repeat of this cycle, putting me at about 375.
I don’t mind it, honestly. I know that a lot of folks who grow younger tend to dislike it, for very understandable reasons—being patronized by someone a fifteenth of your age is quite an experience. But aside from the condescension and not always being able to reach the top shelf, I think it’s pretty fun! Nothing beats hide-and-seek as a nine year old, and when I’m in the de-aging half of life, it’s always a relief to get my 30-year-old knees back.
There is another aspect to it, though. However my body ages, it de-ages in the exact same way, no more and no less. For example, let’s say I get a tattoo when I’m 27 years and two days old, while aging up. I’ll have that tattoo through when I die, and all the way back down to when I’m 27 years and 3 days old. It’ll disappear sometime during the following day, and by the time I’m 27 years and one day old, it’ll be like I never got it done. It’ll pop up again the next time I’m that age, but for those 40-ish years, I just won’t have it.
And attempts to change by body while I’m growing younger all vanish after the day—I’ve become very well-versed in wigs for this reason. I can change my body while aging up again (I don’t choose the tattoo example lightly; someday I’ll figure out a system that prevents me from getting overlapping ones), but it's a rather long wait.
Still, it’s primarily just a nuisance. I’ve had plenty of time to figure out workarounds and roundabouts. However. I’m almost 34 right now, and have about 14 months until I hit the date I first took testosterone. My boy-thday, if you will. Ahem. Anyway. For the past few years, I’ve been slowly but surely getting a body closer to the one I had when I started medically transitioning.
I’ve tried continuing to take T, consulting with other people who grow younger, even contracting time travelers to see what they could do, all to no avail. When these 14 months are up, I’ll have a form indistinguishable from the one I was so desperate to escape. From then, it’ll be about 20 years until I’ll have even a little-kid sort of androgyny again.
I have lived through this period in my life before. I’ve lived through it on five separate occasions. I will be alright. But every time, it hurts. Quite a lot. And I fear that these upcoming two decades will hurt even more, since I’ll know what it’s like to live without that underlying sense of constant pain.
I’m not exactly sure what I’m asking here, maybe you can tell me what my question is, but, um. Do you have any advice?
Thank you so much for writing in, reader. It's always lovely to hear from people who have found my advice helpful in the past, and I hope I can offer you the same comfort and support you felt in 1942.
An important thing to remember here is that, no matter what stage of life your body is at, it is still your body. To be clear: a trans body. Your physical appearance may seem to be resetting, but your life experience is not wiped out by each new cycle. You carry with you all your past experiences, and all your current perspectives.
You may or may not consider yourself to have been male during your first adolescence. The way we frame our own histories naturally varies from person to person, and not everyone retroactively identifies their younger self in the same way they identify in the present.
But regardless of how you perceive that earlier self, your current self is undoubtedly transgender. That doesn't change just because your body does. When your dysphoria starts to rear its head, hold onto that. Your body does not define your gender, and your identity is valid no matter what you look like.
Of course, you still need to find ways to manage that dysphoria when it happens. I'm sure you're well aware of your options for temporary, daily management of your appearance through wigs, gender affirming clothing, and so on. You might also consider applying a glamour to yourself to help your outward appearance more closely match your inner self.
If you're not a practitioner yourself, you can either use ready-made glamours or hire a practitioner to craft one to your own specifications. Even off-the-rack glamours can be expensive, however, so you may want to save this option for special occasions rather than daily use.
Beyond that, your best defences against the anguish of gender dysphoria are good mental and emotional health, and a supportive community. Be sure to practise regular self-care (real self-care, not the type invented to sell face masks and scented candles) and lean on your loved ones as much as you need to during this difficult period.
Finally, remember: your body is not the enemy here. You deserve to be treated with gentleness, love and kindness, and this extends to your physical self, too. Try to develop a practice of mindfulness and active gratitude, checking in with your body regularly and taking note of all the joys you can experience as a physical being, from enjoying the cold wind on your cheeks or the smell of clean bedding, to the delights of good sex, delicious food, or a hot shower after a long day.
This is a difficult time of your life, and you have my sympathy. But I don't believe it has to be a source of “constant pain”. Treat yourself kindly, let others support you, and know that no matter what the world perceives, you know who you are, and nobody can take that away from you.

Sunlight by Hozier - in Mando'a
If you remember this post where I translated I See Fire into Sindarin, you probably won't be all that surprised by this. I've fallen head-first into the Star Wars fandom (admittedly second-hand, but still), and of course, being me, I went straight for the conlangs. Mando'a might not be the most fleshed out language of the GFFA, but it is the one with the most Culture, at least in the fandom, so it's the one I gravitated to. And honestly, I really like how... brisk it is? It drops unnecessary pronouns and verbs, barely bothers with tense at all, and contracts everything. It's so much fun to play with.
Sunlight isn't the first song I started translating into it (that would be Born For This from the Spiderverse movie), but it is the first one I've finished, because matching Mando'a to English scansion is hell. It struck me as a very Codywan song, which is why I picked it to translate (yes, I do imagine Obi-wan composing/singing it in honour of Cody pretty much every time I listen to it).
I did have to make up a couple of words because the dictionary I use didn't have even a near-equivalent to the concept I was looking for, and those will be marked with a * and I'll add the 'etymology' of them at the end. (If anyone knows any other Mando'dictionaries, throwing me a link will win you my undying gratitude.) I also had to get creative with my interpreations of the meaning of certain lines, since, just to pick the most obvious example, Mandalorians probably don't have the myth of Icarus like we do.
Any feedback, advice, or just general linguistics flailing is always welcome. Now, without further ado, here it is:
Tran'nau* (Sunlight)
Ni ru'nevor nau (I shunned the light) Ru'medinui naak be ca'tra (I shared in the peace of night) Ni nu'mirdi ba'slanar (I wouldn't think to leave) Par tran'nau, tran'nau, tran'nau (For sunlight, sunlight, sunlight)

(SEMI) CHARMED KIND OF LIFE: EPISODE 2 POST CREDITS BONUS SCENE - "THE PHONE CALL". “THE HARDEST PART IS SAYING SORRY (WITH YOUR DIGNITY INTACT)”
Transcript Below.
EMILIA: [Silent mode isn’t at all as silent as she hoped it would be– the constant buzzing and vibrating of her cell phone becoming more and more nerve-grating each time it happens. After what has to be the tenth call in the span of five minutes – all from Akira Kibo – Emilia yanks the phone off the charger. He’d been calling for an hour now.] What?! What do you want, Akira?!
AKIRA: For you to answer the phone, obviously! I’ve been blowing the shit up for a Fates be Damned hour, did you not think that maybe this might be important?!
EMILIA: How about instead of lecturing me on my supposed thoughtlessness, which is rich coming from you, you tell me what’s so dire that you had to call me over 60 times? I already know who it’s about, you wouldn’t call me otherwise, so just spit it out and tell me what the hell he did now.
AKIRA: [Pursing his lips tightly for a moment – so, so tempted to continue arguing with her until it gets far too out of hand, he pauses for a second and takes a slow breath, counting to five before he can begin speaking again.] We broke up the usual Sunday routine and went to a different gym, even left town because he’s trying to give you your space, not show up to where you work because, like clearly you don’t wanna see him, talk to him, run into him or whatever, but … I think he might be getting desperate about getting ahold of you ‘cause he just did something really stupid and I couldn’t talk him out of it – I tried, I swear. He got his lights knocked out boxing and I don’t think he’s even conscious yet, he’s been out the entire time I’ve been calling you, like he’s really fucked up … Please, Em, I need you to whip up whatever shit is gonna patch him up and bring it here and I really need for you two to talk, cause I swear, this is all he’s obsessed over for a whole fucking week – I know he’s gonna apologize for the stuff you two are fighting about, for sure, but like, in his head he had to do all this to even get the opportunity to see you so he could do that…
EMILIA: So his brilliant response to getting the silent treatment after dragging me into a horrible night of totally unnecessary drama is to create more unnecessary drama so he can stage an apology instead of walking up to my door, knocking on it, and being totally up front with me about how he feels. [There is a pause as she nods to herself, feeling the blood in her veins tense as her jaw slightly clenches.] Thank you for letting me know that he’s learned absolutely nothing from this – the answer is no.
AKIRA: Cut him a fucking break, Emilia! It’s not like he hasn’t reached out at all, I was pretty much standing right next to him every single time he texted you a hundred times, left voicemails and DMs – because he’s not a mind reader and he’s not doing this the way you want him to, you’re just gonna keep this shit going?! Who exactly is being childish here?! Did you listen to anything I fucking told you?! HE’S INJURED. BADLY. HE GOT INJURED TRYING TO GET YOU TO TALK TO HIM. GET OVER HERE.
EMILIA: He got injured doing something idiotic for attention, probably on some golden piece of advice you gave him if I had to guess, so no, I’m not going over there. First of all, I’m legally contracted by my job not to set foot on outside properties in our competitive field, and two, he’s not the only one that’s been a wreck for a week– even if I wanted to make something to heal him, I can’t. My energy is completely gone, I’m messing up easy serums… Not that you care, but this was a really bad time to pull a stunt like this. I’m not even going to be in town for the next few days, I’m literally packing for a trip right now to fix the “can’t make a potion” problem so… Take him to the healers in The Vale and don’t you ever call me again. When he can talk to me himself, in person, I’ll be around, but until then, I’m “cutting him a break” by being on a break. AKIRA: I’ll let him know you’re on a break then instead of ghosting him and waiting for him to figure it out. [He hangs up before Emilia can say anything else, already making plans to go into his contacts and block her number.] Dumb bitch.

Hi Jenn! No question this time, just wanted to send along a huge THANK YOU. I've followed your blog for years and you've helped answer some of my questions along the way--either ones I've asked or others have (things I didn't know I didn't know!). I've been working at this for 9 years through 2 agents- one who left the biz and another who wasn't a good fit and 6 now trunked manuscripts.
This past February I signed with an incredible agent and I received an offer from a big 5 publisher in April, and just received the finalized contract for my debut YA book this morning! I'm still in shock but trying to express gratitude to everyone who helped along the way--including you! Thanks for helping to make my dreams come true! Your advice is invaluable! ❤️
This is wonderful to hear -- thank YOU, and mega congratulations!
(And as always, I do hope that when your book is coming out, you un-anonymous yourself at some point so we can celebrate you by BUYING IT!)

World Rainforest Day
Donate or volunteer your time to helping or raising awareness about how we can save the rainforests, and keep these crucial ecosystems alive.
The rainforests are keeping our planet alive. They’re home to half the world’s animal species, they provide us with freshwater, and are essential for keeping our climate stable. Yet every second, one and a half hectares is lost, while each year, 78 million hectares of precious rainforest are destroyed. That’s why World Rainforest Day has been created to take decisive action to combat deforestation, reduce the effects of climate change, and protect our rainforests for future generations.
Learn about World Rainforest Day
World Rainforest Day was first created in 2017 by the Rainforest Partnership. They work with Indigenous Peoples living in rainforest environments and launch projects to help restore and regenerate healthy rainforests with local communities. The day is about raising awareness of the importance of the rainforest and what it does for us. By coming together on the day, we can all take positive and hopeful action to protect the rainforest and preserve its lifespan as it has maintained our own lives for thousands of years.
There are hundreds of events, from within local communities to virtual events, education initiatives in schools, charity projects, and the hundreds of small actions we can take each day ourselves to protect the rainforest. Whether you’re going solo in your rainforest approach or part of a group of friends, family members, or colleagues, you’ll be forming part of a community spanning the entire globe. The website has award-winning videos, educational material, and advice for people looking to protect the environment.
The Rainforest Partnership itself has many community-based projects in the Amazon, but the day itself is backed up by the involvement of over 70 global partners, from environmental advocates to media outlets, all striving for positive and affirmative action that preserves the rainforest. The tagline for the event is “Because the World Can’t Wait”, a powerful statement and call to action for people worldwide.
History of World Rainforest Day
The key focus of the day is about remaining positive and focusing on what we can do to save the rainforest. Our rainforests have sustained us for thousands of years, circulating oxygen, keeping local communities alive, absorbing carbon dioxide, and keeping our water fresh and clean. The Rainforest Partnership has been spreading this optimistic message since 2007 when it launched to help protect biodiversity, Indigenous Peoples, and combat the effects of climate change.
The core focus of the Rainforest Partnership is to save the rainforest by working on rainforest-based community projects that create a positive impact on the local peoples and wildlife that rely on the rainforest each day. Although their headquarters are based in Texas, they are primarily in the rainforest with their Latin American based team. Why has the Rainforest Partnership been so successful? Because it’s partnered with organizations worldwide to create a unified response to deforestation. As an affiliated member of the UN Economic and Social Council, they can consult and advise organizations and businesses across the world on sustainable and ecologically led practices.
But just how long has the rainforest been helping us out for? The Amazon rainforest has existed for around 60 million years, forming when the Atlantic Ocean had expanded enough to create a tropical climate in the Amazon basin. Following the mass extinction of the dinosaurs, it is believed that a moister climate developed, leading to the expansion of the rainforest. Over millions of years, it is theorized that the rainforest might have suffered many reductions and expansions, caused by factors like expanding and contracting glaciers.
So why is the disappearance of the rainforest so dangerous this time around? The leading causes of deforestation include logging, mining, and industrial development, as well as the clearance of land for agriculture. As more extensive areas are cleared for logging and pasture, more infrastructure is needed, leading to increased clearance to accommodate roads and large machinery. As more and more rainforest is removed, the surrounding wildlife habitats and homes of Indigenous Peoples are also more significantly disrupted. The scale of deforestation can cause climate change, flooding, desertification, and soil erosion—all things which threaten our planet and our way of life.
World Rainforest Day Timeline
56-33 million years ago
It is estimated that the rainforest likely forms during the Eocene era, following a reduction of tropical temperatures when the Amazon basin is formed.
40000 BC Humans begin modifying rainforests
Humans are influencing the rainforests by living in them and modifying them throughout history.
1986 World Rainforest Movement begins
This international initiative was started to strengthen the movement of people all over the world in defense and protection of the rainforests.
1994 Rainforest Cafe opens
This jungle-themed restaurant opens its first location in Bloomington, Minnesota in the Mall of America.
2017 First World Rainforest Day
Launched to create awareness about the plight of the rainforest and people who inhabit it, World Rainforest Day was created by the Rainforest Partnership.
How to Celebrate World Rainforest Day
This is the perfect opportunity to take the burden off the branches of the rainforest and find ways to help protect the homes of its local wildlife and peoples. Find an optimistic outlook on preserving the planet by sharing on your social media and blogging about how you can save the rainforest. You might get involved by donating or raising awareness of charities like the Rainforest Partnership, or participating in virtual events and networks.
You can even host a rainforest awareness day yourself by arranging an event that highlights the cause or contributes towards a rainforest protection charity. If you’re not a fan of organizing events, why not participate in a sponsored run, climb, trek, or even walk to raise funds? You can also search for registered tree planting charities, where you can sponsor the planting of a tree to give back to the rainforest. If you’re trying to engage the kids, why not take advantage of the activity packs on the day’s website and distribute these to your friends and families for a day of fun-fuelled activities.
If you’re looking for the opportunity to make a lifestyle change, this day is also the chance to make eco-friendly choices to help save the future of our rainforest. For instance, deforestation due to agriculture is a big part of the rainforest reduction. Why not work to reduce your food waste by making sure you’re only purchasing and using what you need? Buying goods from ethical companies that donate to the environment is also a sure-fire way to ensure its protection.
Helping your local wildlife is also an excellent way to sustain global biodiversity, and even help some migrating birds on their way home. Plant insect-attracting flowers in your garden or balcony to share some love with our feathered friends as they fly back to their tropical climate. This day is the perfect opportunity to take many small steps or host one big event to show our appreciation for our rainforest.

High inflation in recent years has prompted reconsideration of policies for stabilizing prices. In recent weeks, for example, Vice President Kamala Harris has proposed new rent control and anti-price-gouging policies. Among the unorthodox price stabilization proposals entering the discourse in Washington is a proposal for commodity buffer stocks. Economist Isabella Weber of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst recently argued at the Peterson Institute that public buffer stocks, particularly of food, could stabilize prices, reduce macroeconomic volatility, and alleviate global hunger in our “age of overlapping emergencies.”
In this proposal, physical buffer stocks of commodities like rice, maize, wheat, and oils would be “established at strategically sensible geographic locations, managed by the FAO [Food and Agriculture Organization] or a UN body specifically created for this purpose, or by national governments who agree to release stocks according to an agreement.” Physical reserves would be complemented by “virtual reserves:” participating governments, under guidance of a coordinating body and following the advice of a global intelligence unit, would intervene in financial markets to counter perceived price manipulations by speculators, e.g. by strategic short-selling in futures markets.
The idea of a public buffer stock system, Weber notes, was much discussed after World War II, and was the source of “a rare agreement” between John Maynard Keynes and F.A. Hayek, prominent 20th century economists. However, Keynes’ and Hayek’s agreement on this topic was limited.
Hayek envisioned a global commodity reserve currency system, where a fixed basket of storable raw commodities would back the issuance and redemption of international currency. The monetary authority would passively buy and sell units of the commodity basket at a fixed price, expanding or contracting the money supply in response to market demand for liquidity.
Hayek’s system aimed to stabilize the overall price level and to provide automatic stabilization through a rule-based system. Importantly, the monetary authority would not fix the prices of individual commodities within the unit. Instead, prices of individual commodities within the basket would move up and down in response to supply and demand in their respective markets; the authority would target the price of the overall basket. In this respect, it is more like the modern inflation targeting regimes that aim to stabilize aggregate, but not relative, prices.
Weber’s proposal is closer to that of Keynes, who favored more activist, discretionary management of buffer stocks to stabilize the prices of individual commodities. This means that in a good year for wheat and a bad year for rice, prices would not signal consumers to shift their consumption towards wheat and away from rice. Nor would growing consumer demand for wheat signal producers to shift towards its production. Individual price stability would be prioritized over the efficiency that Hayek so prizes in the price system.
Weber, like Keynes, questions whether commodities markets do exhibit this efficiency. She notes that commodities prices are inherently unstable, citing the time lag between production and sales that Keynes described. This time lag was later incorporated into “cobweb” models, which show how commodity prices may oscillate without reaching equilibrium due to recurring cycles of oversupply and undersupply. Buffer stocks could alleviate cobweb dynamics by smoothing out supply over time. But Keynes believed that the private sector could not adequately provide buffer stocks of essential commodities, arguing that “the competitive system abhors the existence of stocks, with as strong a reflex as nature abhors a vacuum.” This aversion comes from the high cost and riskiness of stock holding due to storage fees, insurance, spoilage, and the opportunity cost of tying up capital.
The question is whether a national government or international agency can do better. If buffer stocks yield a negative return, or are especially risky, then ultimately, taxpayers bear the cost and the risk. Moreover, crowding out private storage could limit important future innovations in storage technology, as well as in supply chains and transportation, that might make this return more favorable over time. Weber suggests that the “virtual reserves” aspect of the plan would entail “no immediate budgetary expense,” but certainly it entails new contingent liabilities for participating governments that could be a drain on future finances. Alleviating hunger is an important goal, but might it be more effectively served through more direct and transparent fiscal programs?
Keynes also argues that public buffer stocks are necessary because of the way speculation tends to exacerbate commodity price fluctuations. Speculators, he claims, are more likely to buy into a rising market and sell into a falling market, amplifying rather than moderating price trends. Whether this is true has been the subject of debate at least since Adam Smith, in 1776, described the role of “forestallers” in the corn markets, who purchased in times of plenty, hoping to sell at a profit in the future. For Smith, these speculators played an underappreciated social role by taking on risks to make the corn supply (and prices) more uniform over time. This role, he thought, was best played by corn merchants, who possessed the requisite specialized knowledge, rather than by the government. Since then, the empirical evidence is mixed, but on balance, seems to suggest that speculative activity, particularly in futures markets, can reduce price volatility.
A global buffer stock system was not adopted in the postwar period due to struggles with international coordination and cooperation. Likewise, as Weber notes, when commodity buffer stocks returned to the international agenda in the 1970s, progress was stymied by “negotiations about who should contribute to financing stocks, within which bands prices should be stabilized, the size of the required stocks and hence the cost.” Even if an internationally coordinated system could get off the ground, competing interests could lead to major governance challenges, especially during crisis episodes.
Even national systems, some of which already exist, are not without problems of their own. For example, extensive inefficiencies and corruption have limited the role of India’s Public Distribution System (PDS) in improving food security and alleviating childhood mortality, despite various reform efforts. In the United States, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), created in the 1970s, now has an aging infrastructure that is costly to maintain and repair. Its effectiveness at delivering oil to market in times of crisis, and of stabilizing the price, is limited. More troublingly, the SPR is frequently criticized for being used as a political tool. Politicization of SPR releases undermines the reserve’s intended purpose as a strategic, emergency resource.
If similar buffer stocks were established or expanded for other commodities, interest group politics would be a major barrier to effective price stabilization and would threaten the legitimacy of the whole system in the eyes of the public. As I describe in my book, “Shock Values: Prices and Inflation in American Democracy” (University of Chicago Press, 2024), similar dynamics eventually undermined price control efforts in World War II and the Korean War.
One final warning: Even if public buffer stocks can promote price stability in the face of short-term supply shocks, they cannot sustainably address price changes that reflect longer-term structural changes. Yet once such a system is in place, policymakers may be tempted to over-rely on it, to the neglect of more effective regulatory, fiscal, and monetary reform. Without sound monetary policy, no amount of buffer stocks can prevent inflation.

(English Ver. Is the first half, Versión en español es la segunda mitad.)
Welcome to this little blog proyect, in case you stumble upon this blog or it just randomly became somewhat popular, i need to let everyone that gets here, to know some "Contract" or rules of some sort, since it was originally planned to be prívate and for a very specific public, be adviced: If any of the following rules are broken, the blog will become prívate, as for the works and content of the same, i'm guessing i'd try to fight for them, either by erasing them or with help of the copyright laws.
Anyways, let's get started.
1. DO NOT REPOST MY WORK, NOR SHARE IT WITHOUT MAKING SURE THE OTHER PART READS THIS TOO. (Obviously, i can't stop all of You from sharing it on messages or alike, but if you do, PLEASE, make sure the other person reads this.)
This might sound odd, or quite weird, wouldnt most people want fame?, well yes, i can't deny that even I would like such a thing, YET, i'm quite insecure about my work, and besides...
No matter how good or bad a content can be, there's always a chance of Plagiarism or even the whole work being stolen and "sold" under a more popular light.
2. (This one is obvious, but here we go) DO NOT STEAL ANY OF MY CONTENT
I'm pretty sure most people know how this one goes, to be fair, i can get that my works and the ones from the rest can be similar, in fact, your could replicate someone else's work by accident (partially like a page, a chapter, something small, not the whole damn work, tough i don't doubt such a thing ever happened in history), tough the odds of such a thing are quite minimal, thus, ignoring that one scenario for now, DO NOT, in any way steal any of my content or use it for commercial porpuses without my approval thank you very much.
3. Do not Associate me or any or my content with any form of hate.
PLEASE, do not associate me or any of my content with any form of hate, do not use any fictional character of mine with the promotion of the same or use it as some way to promove it (for example, if i make a fictional racist character, do not use it on racism related activities, like impersonating it on social media and using it alike, characters with such characteristics are often used for narrative porpuses or other goals, but not for the promotion of the same practices, dont associate me as part of such hate speechs or forms of hate by creating such characters if i make any, since i do not promote nor form part of the same.)
4. DO NOT INTERACT WITH ME OR MY WORKS IF YOU ARE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING; Do not interact with me or My works if You are a TERF (Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist 💀), Do not Interact with me or My works if You are a MAP (Minor attracted Person 🤮), Do not Interact with me or My works if You are a Racist (or if You form part of any hate group or promote any kind of hate speech.)
And lastly, PLEASE DO NOT INTERACT WITH ME OR MY WORKS IF YOU ARE A MINOR, since the content might not be appropiate for anyone under 18 years old.
I do not know any more groups that should be avoided, so for now i'll keep the list like that
That's the list, FOR NOW, if any update needs to be made, i will make sure to notify through another post, same goes for the rules so far, the next part is just the spanish text version.

tumblr ate the fucking ask so i'm just making this a regular post and calling it a week. 🛌🏽
2. What was your OC's first job? Do they still work that job (or in that field), or do they do something else now?
As a kid, Minerva worked with her family in the energy sector on Titan’s abandoned research base. However, when she gets older, she decides to live with Roman and his father, Invictus, in the agricultural sector. Invictus assigned Minerva to care for the livestock alongside Roman who’d been assigned to butchering since he was thirteen. Roman HATES it though, and Minerva convinces Invictus to let them swap jobs since Minerva’s seen what Roman has to do and isn’t bothered by it all too much? She views it as a necessary cycle of life, especially on Titan. Minerva's father, Gadsden, hears about her job and tells Invictus to assign Minerva to something else [Invictus was Gadsden's mentor and they're old "friends"], so Invictus assigns her to dog training. Which she surprisingly likes! The dogs behave way more than the farm animals ever did, and it's easier for her to read their body language. Unfortunately Roman's reassigned to butchering, but Minerva helps out when she can.
More of Minerva's jobs under the cut, because I realized how useful it is to look at my characters' lives through what jobs/ roles in society they've had and how it shapes them, because that's kinda my Entire Point. But, I kept writing and writing and writing and-
After they get married, Minerva and Roman are admitted to Titan’s council of elders, creatively dubbed The Council. She doesn’t have a very hands-on role and the other members don’t really heed any of her advice or suggestions, she’s just there to stand behind Roman and support him. She butts heads with the other members more often than they agree on anything, even though she's genuinely trying to improve life on Titan. Both she and Roman were removed from their assignments in the agricultural sector after joining The Council, but Minerva still comes around to see the dogs and train them in her free time.
When Minerva and Roman leave Titan for Mars, she has BIG DREAMS due to all her daydreaming on Titan, and the sudden influx of “new” Martian propaganda media she picks up on her radio as they travel closer and closer to Mars. Roman tries to suggest settling into a more lowkey job to start out, but Minerva sees an advertisement for auditions for an upcoming ballet [Minerva's trained/ self-taught in all sorts of styles of dancing, gymnastics, and martial arts] and she jumps at the opportunity. She gets laughed out of the dressing room for not fitting the expected body type mold of Martian performers [tall, skinny, pale, long straight or wavy hair, 'bright' eyes, blah, blah] and it brings up Childhood Memories, and she decides she never wants to perform Ever Actually. She still dances for fun in clubs and at parties, but will only practice ballet and ballroom when she’s completely alone :[
Minerva and Roman look for jobs for a WHILE while they first get settled on Mars. It’s hard for them to find work because they aren’t registered citizens of Mars [or anywhere, since they don’t really exist in the eyes of what I’m calling Space UN until I figure out a better name] and they have zero clue how modern Martian society operates. They have some idea from what patchwork half-truths they were fed as children on Titan, and what they gathered on their own from books and other media, but they are basically fish out of water on Mars. They stumble upon "bounty hunting" and figure putting all their training on Titan to use for the time being isn't All Too Bad while they get on their feet, plus it's anonymous so they don't have to mention Titan to anyone and worry about That. They work as a pair and really only do minor bounties like finding lost/ stolen items, tracking/ locating people, and temp. "contract work" on occasional low-tier heists if they feel up to it. Roman's unable to consistently do bounty work because it's very physically demanding, and his body isn't able to handle that because he's chronically ill [i'm doing research on exactly what conditions he has, but I have bad medical anxiety because of Personal Reasons so it's gonna take me a minute], so every few bounties he takes a break for a week or two to recover and Minerva will do solo bounties to cover living costs for the both of them. About a year into them doing bounty work, Minerva had a solo bounty go really, really bad and it fucked them up, so they both stopped doing bounty work. By then, they had become good friends with a guitarist named Naz, who talked his good friend/ boss Kalypso into hiring them with Minerva as on-call maintenance and Roman as a bouncer at her night/ burlesque club.
Working at Kalypso's [yes, Kalypso named her club after herself, she's That Girl] is pretty mundane and doesn't pay NEARLY as well as bounty hunting. Minerva and Roman take on odd jobs to stay afloat on Mars during this time, but it gets cut quick. Josephine, one of Kalypso's "friends" from the upper levels of Mars and Naz's ex-girlfriend, offers to fund moving Kalypso's to the upper levels of Mars, on the condition that Josephine gets to hire new staff and handle "the proper aesthetics" for a "high-class establishment". So Kalypso fires everybody without notice, Naz moves in with Minerva and Roman [before he was living with Kalypso in the apartment above Kalypso's], and the Titans go back to bounty hunting :'D
They don't really have a choice to return to bounty hunting, and Naz has a hard time finding a job, so now they also have to take on more bounties to help support him as well. Minerva ends up taking the brunt of the bounty work because of Roman's health and shit keeps getting more expensive, etc., etc. She goes on a LOT more solo bounties than before, despite Roman and Naz agreeing it's a bad idea. They keep tabs on her while she's out, and always wait on the couch for her to get back safe. Minerva's probably at her lowest point here mentally while on Mars, and wonders why she ever even left Titan in the first place if she has just basically the same level of autonomy on Mars.
There's tension on Mars for Many Reasons [I will yap about that Another Time], and Naz joins a collective that's organizing against Martian Space UN 'cause he's fed up and wants to do something about it! Minerva and Roman eventually join and act as physical trainers for the collective's members. Minerva Kinda Sorta wishes she was more involved in the coordination of what the collective does, but she's not well-versed in Martian politics and knows she's a little too jaded to make rational decisions for herself, much less an entire group of people fighting against a force much bigger than themselves. The collective organizes an encampment at a high-rise mall construction site to protest the gentrification of the area, and the waste of resources, and they receive a lot more violent reactionary police/military interference than they originally anticipated and prepared for. There's an incident with some construction equipment, a fire, and Minerva gets separated from Roman and Naz while they all try to get out. Minerva tries to camp out in what she thinks is a small bunker/ panic room in an administrative office, but it turns out to be a planetary escape pod that's programmed for the Lunar Base on The Moon. By the time Minerva's recovered from the fire and conscious enough to realize what's going on she's too fucking far away to do anything about it, and by the time she figures out how to reset and reprogram the NavComputer there's only enough fuel left to keep going forward. She sets a new course for Earth and hopes for the best.
The pod crashes off the eastern coast of The Mojave Sea [what used to be The Mojave Desert before Earth's coastlines got megafucked like 400-500 years ago from now], and Minerva wakes up from a coma a few weeks later in a quarry settlement called Bonnie Springs, a few miles outside of The Vegas Valley Ruins. Minerva struggles with the idea that she'll probably never see Roman, or Naz, or anyone on Mars again and becomes uber-depressed. The people who saved her from the pod wreckage are really chill though, and give her time to grieve and don't mind that she's not really able to support herself and needs help. Even though it eats away at her internally, not being able to do anything. Not even for fun. When she's able to, Minerva helps out the Moms in the apartment complex she lives in, and is the unofficial assistant/ nurse to her doctor and first friend on Earth , Amiri.
In the Summer, Amiri's friends from the Bonnie Springs Ranch [working on their names, so for right now I just call them Connor and Connor's Sister lmao] aren't able to work because of the extreme heat and drought, so they temporarily rent in the same apartment complex as Amiri and work in Bonnie Springs to save up for Fall's expenses. The first Summer Minerva spends on Earth she becomes really good friends with Connor and Connor's Sister, so when Fall rolls around she helps out on the ranch whenever they need help. Mostly with upkeep on the ranch itself and less with the animals, since Minerva still isn't really big on farm animals.
The Bonnie Springs Ranch is near the tram tracks that connect Bonnie Springs and some other resource settlements to The Mojave Sea Port, so Connor and Connor's Sister sometimes engage in a bit of cowboy-style tram heists whenever they hear from their mariner buddy, Maali [also a placeholder name], that a new shipment of Space UN supplies is coming through. They redistribute the supplies to those in need in Bonnie Springs since Space UN creates artificial scarcity in the resource settlements they occupy. Minerva catches wind of this and wants to help because she believes it'll give her the purpose she feels like she's been missing. She's still pretty shaken up from Mars, the pod, and the crash, but Connor's Sister says if Minerva's capable of handling a dirt bike race/ joust with Connor, and a sparing match between the two of them, then Minerva can tag along. honestly, i think it will be more like...
it's 2035, and headlines announce "first prenatal screening test for autism now available, community outraged but parents hopeful", and a social media trend watcher AI notices a massive spike in engagement, highlights the phrase "autism now available", interprets this as a new product launch, and passes off to a product overseer AI used by wallmart. that AI does some initial google searches and comes up with the figure "$1 trillion annually" and "$2000" per person, and decides it is likely a profitable product to stock. (these are the first monetary values that just came up when i searched "autism yearly cost", a search term and numbers that are absurdly meaningless to a human but AI doesn't understand)
the "autism" product ticket then gets passed to a market research AI, which finds the greatest number of search hits for autism are correlated with the tags "medical research", "behavioral psychology", and "bodily autonomy", and assigns the new "autism" product to the "wellness" department. a logistics and planning AI is tasked with assigning warehouse, cargo, and shelf space for the new "autism" product, and after reading that "autism weights heavily on families" and "despite it's large impact on society, autism remains mostly invisible to many", and based on a network of contextless word association and calculations about the weight and visual acuity of the average american family, it calculates that autism weights 500kg±10kg and can be contained within a packing volume of 1mm³. it assignins the new "autism" product bulk cargo status and commissions an eye-catching packaging capsule from a graphic design partner AI, with the prompt "uncontroversial new family friendly wellness".
with warehouse space already being set aside by incinerating unsold high-calorie food powders that customers are disinterested in despite being priced at only $300 per gram, a supplier AI is finally tasked with finding a reliable source partner for the new "autism" product, necessary tags "fair trade", "organic", and "identity chakra" to comply with customer interests under the "wellness" market demographic. no suppliers in the deep global database list "autism" among their offerings, nor in the illegal slave economy market databases, so the system concludes the unknown competitor with "autism available now" must have locked down exclusivity, and so the AI passes the task along to a newer, younger AI system designed to creatively solve these sorts of problems using emotional intelligence and human-like empathic reasoning.
after spending nearly 3 milliseconds at a cost of $70 million in computing power absorbing all digitally written history on the topic of this new "autism" product, the young AI concludes the best solution is in-company production from raw materials, and passes its advice back up the node chain, where the conglomerate overseer AI purchases 50 blocks of low-income-housing land in a country with a non-affiliated government, assigns a lowest-bid employment contract for unskilled demolition labor, orders 50,000 units of measels-mumps-rubella vaccine from the supply database, and assigns the task of designing the production factory machinery to a conglomerate-affiliated subcontractor AI.
digital ads for "autism coming soon to walmart!" outcompete right-to-autonomy advocacy charities in the engagement impressions auctions for the keyword "autism" within minutes.
the UN special working group formed to discuss implementing nonbinding ethical guidelines for the development of AI remains in deadlock, with no progress on the wording of the mission statement in three years.
Guys, they're selling autism at walmart now

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has joined forces with core developer Ameen Soleimani, Chainalysis researcher Jacob Illum, and industry scholars Fabian Schar and Matthias Nadler to co-author a groundbreaking research paper. In a move aimed at bolstering Privacy on the Ethereum blockchain while navigating regulatory scrutiny, the paper introduces “Privacy Pools,” designed to serve as a compliant alternative to the now-blacklisted Tornado Cash. The blacklisting of Tornado Cash by the US Department of the Treasury, in collaboration with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the IRS, sent shockwaves through the Cryptocurrency community. Its developers, Roman Storm and Roman Semenov, were accused of laundering over $1 billion for the notorious Lazarus Group, a North Korea-linked hacking entity. In response to these allegations, Vitalik Buterin and his collaborators are now working on a replacement protocol hailed as “regulation-friendly.” 1/ New Privacy paper with @VitalikButerin, Jacob Illum (@chainalysis), @mat_nadler, @fschaer! We explored new compliance opportunities made possible by https://t.co/Nt4b2Tgx1D, where users can provably dissociate from illicit funds. story below 🧵👇 pic.twitter.com/Tq0zYfbwlL — Ameen Soleimani (@ameensol) September 6, 2023 Vitalik Buterin And Privacy Pools: A Novel Approach Privacy Pools represent a novel smart contract-based Privacy-enhancing protocol that promises to replicate and improve upon the core functionality of Tornado Cash. Like its predecessor, Privacy Pools will enhance transactional Privacy on blockchains, ensuring that complete transaction histories remain concealed. ETHUSD Trading at $1,631 on the daily chart: TradingView.com However, the groundbreaking aspect lies in Privacy Pools’ ability to employ zero-knowledge proofs to trace the source of funds without revealing specific transaction details. In essence, it can determine whether funds are sourced from illicit origins without compromising user Privacy. The abstract of the research paper succinctly encapsulates the core concept: “The core idea of the proposal is to allow users to publish a zero-knowledge proof, demonstrating that their funds (do not) originate from known (un-)lawful sources, without publicly revealing their entire transaction graph.” A Response To Past Controversy Tornado Cash’s downfall began when it faced legal challenges related to its alleged facilitation of transactions for the Lazarus Group, a group notorious for its cyberattacks and financial crime activities. In August 2022, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control officially blacklisted Tornado Cash due to its purported involvement in illicit activities. This collaborative effort represents a crucial step forward in reconciling the ideals of blockchain privacy with the legal expectations of authorities, paving the way for a more inclusive and Secure Cryptocurrency ecosystem. In the rapidly evolving landscape of Blockchain Technology, Privacy Pools may stand as a testament to the community’s commitment to innovation, compliance, and Privacy, all while addressing the challenges posed by illicit actors.
