Rising Nitrous Oxide Use Alarms NPIS
Alarming Increase in Nitrous Oxide and Ketamine Activities
The National Poisons Information Service (NPIS), a crucial toxicology advice service in the UK, has released its 2022 to 2023 annual report, raising concerns over the marked increase in activities related to nitrous oxide and ketamine. This report, which is a reflection of the consultations made by clinicians with NPIS, shows a significant rise of 175% in nitrous oxide-related activities and 25% in ketamine-related activities compared to last year. The Public Health Challenge of Poisoning Poisoning remains a significant public health issue in the UK. With over 380,000 hospital presentations in 2019 to 2020 in England alone, and numerous consultations with primary care and NHS advice services, the impact is substantial. In adults, most poisoning cases are due to drug overdose in the context of self-harm, while drug misuse is a notable cause of mortality. Accidental exposures, especially involving household substances, are common in children. NPIS: Providing Essential Clinical Support Without specialist clinical toxicology services in most UK hospitals, NPIS's role becomes indispensable. It offers 24-hour access to expert advice for the safe and effective management of people exposed to drugs and chemicals. NPIS aids healthcare professionals in managing potential toxin exposures and helps in providing appropriate clinical care. This support is crucial in avoiding unnecessary referrals and hospital admissions. NPIS's Nationwide Reach and Online Resources Operating from four NHS hospitals in Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, and Newcastle, NPIS delivers an integrated national service across the UK. Besides its telephone advice line, NPIS offers TOXBASE and the TOXBASE app, an online database providing information on thousands of drugs and chemicals. This service, available to all UK healthcare professionals, supports informed decision-making in poisoning cases. Addressing the Issue: Expert Opinions Professor Raquel Duarte-Davidson, from the UK Health Security Agency, said, This year’s annual report again demonstrates the value of the close collaboration between the NPIS, UKTIS and UKHSA to address problems of poisoning across the UK and globally. NPIS goes beyond clinical support, engaging in research, education, and the collection and sharing of surveillance data. This multifaceted approach contributes significantly to public health and health security efforts in the UK and internationally. NPIS's Multifaceted Public Health Contribution The NPIS annual report not only sheds light on the rising misuse of substances like nitrous oxide and ketamine but also highlights the service's broader contributions. Beyond clinical support, NPIS engages in research, education, and data sharing, significantly contributing to public health and health security efforts in the UK and beyond. This multifaceted approach is vital in addressing the growing public health challenges related to substance abuse. Sources: THX News & UK Health Security Agency. Read the full article

BRIGHT DAY BLUE DAY
CHAPTER 40 IS NOW UP
In the city of Yukiktrum, the hierarchy is clear even when the laws are not: Alphrim rule, betsra serve, and ometki bear young. Claiming a part of the city is easy, but keeping your territory is not, so Alprhim like Chramkut govern with talon and tooth. Maintaining power means control access to ometki, and by selling access to both them and their eggs, Chramkut has turned Themself into a ruthless and wealthy warlord.
Untkra once served as Chramkut’s prime ometki, but that time has passed, and Untkra has been replaced by someone younger. After one failed escape, it was only Untkra’s history with Chramkut that saved them from execution. Untkra knows that getting caught trying again will get them executed, but Unktra is willing to sacrifice everything if it means leaving the conflict-ridden city of Yukiktrum behind. This time, Chramkut’s prime laden ometki wants out, and they’ve begged for Untkra’s help. Untkra is done bearing offspring Untkra will never meet. It’s this way or death.
However, the desert landscape beyond the walls of Yukiktrum is hostile and unknown, and there’s no guarantee that there’s anything out there worth escaping to. What Untkra may not be ready for is what hope lays beyond the dunes, and the redemption that a new home can offer. Yet when another ometki needs saving, Yukiktrum calls Untkra back in what could be Untkra’s most daring rescue yet.
Genre: Sci-Fi
Rating: 18+
T/W: This story is dark in nature, and while nothing explicit is ever shown, there are repeated references to rape (including underage), sexual slavery, and I suppose what equates to child trafficking (is selling eggs considered child trafficking?). There is also violence, murder, drug use, and prejudice/bigotry. This story also contains the trappings of a/b/o. It’s not so closely married to the trope as most a/b/o fics, but it is quite obviously based on it.
Excerpt:
“I never thought I’d confess anything to an Alphrim,” Ukti murmured softly. “But I…” Ukti closed their eyes and sighed, as if gathering strength. “The only thing I’ve looked forward to in the past half-season has been meeting you here. I’m sorry I haven’t been by, but I got scared, and I didn’t want to compromise you in any way.”
Akche felt their heartbeat in their throat, awash in a joy they hadn’t felt since graduating Academy. It’s not just me. Ukti feels this way about me, too. Akche tried to fight back the smile that threatened, knowing the mood wouldn’t allow for it. A montage of daydreams danced through their mind like playful children—fleeting romantic moments in abandoned places, whispered affection told in confidence, hands clasped and bodies pressed in close. Akche craved it so deeply that it manifested as a pain in their stomach. Instead of fighting for space between them in a bed closet at night, they could sleep entwined like hatchlings, swapping smiles and kisses in the only space where the outside world didn’t exist. I would treat you like royalty, Akche wanted to say to Ukti. You’d wake up every single day the most loved betsra in the city, and I’d make sure you knew it. Akche could not best Thavak in combat and would always labor under Their thumb, but in loving Ukti, Akche would dominate Thavak, removing every shadow of Their existence through the sheer power of Akche’s affection. The fantasy was powerful, bringing Akche such delight that Akche struggled to control their expression.
“You aren’t compromising me at all,” Akche insisted emphatically. “I’m so grateful you’ve come to me. You shouldn’t carry this burden alone.”
“It’s been so difficult,” Ukti admitted. “But I am crumbling under this weight of silence. I need to at least talk about it, or I will go mad.”
“Whatever you need, I’ll do my best to provide it.”
Ukti’s smile was fragile but present, and Akche hoped one day Akche could strengthen it. “Your spouse is so lucky to have You, Akche.”

1. There is still a taboo.
“Halal dating- AstafiruAllah!”
There is still a huge taboo around Muslims and dating in general, you say the term ‘halal dating’ and the room goes crazy! Fatwa’s being thrown out left, right and centre.
However, if we are being real we know that Muslims are dating, and doing more for that fact. The reality is we do date, more and more we feel a need to get to know each other for longer periods and more intimately before marriage.
While traditionally you may not even be alone with one another before you marry, now it’s commonly accepted as a ‘haram’ thing that we all do. This doesn’t mean, we don’t try to hide it. Muslim dating being an unsaid secret alone makes it hard to find a Muslim spouse, as we cannot simply approach each other, in places we frequent- the mosque! Or otherwise.
2. We have restrictions.
“It has to be somebody Salafi, or it won’t work”
“It has to be somebody Bengali, or my parents won’t approve”
We have all heard these or similar restrictions. Religion will play a huge role in who you decide to show interest in, factor in cultural preference, or parental influence and you are in a tight spot. Add in attraction, personality, and the rest -and the pool of potential spouses becomes smaller and smaller. If you are restrictive with your preferences, for whatever reason this makes looking for a spouse a harder task. The community let’s face it- is religiously split and still very segregated, with communities sticking together. Finding a spouse in this state of affairs can be tricky.
3. There aren’t many Muslims around.
“I’m the only Muslim in the village”
Some of us live in cities or areas where the Muslim population is zilch, and this makes online dating your only option. Long distance relationships are tough never mind long distance dating. For those of us who are practically the ‘only Muslim in the village’ finding a spouse seems impossible.
4. Finding people who are serious
As I mentioned before, Muslims do date some of us more than others. Finding a Muslim spouse has become a game of sorting the F***boys from the husbands. For the brothers, a game of sorting the ‘Wild hijabi’s’ from the ‘Wife hijabi’s. It’s hard to find people who aren’t just after a quick fling, and it’s only getting more blaze with profiles stating ‘not looking for anything serious’ on Muslim dating apps. The number of people who are serious about getting to know somebody, about looking for a life partner seems, someone to go to Jannah with seems to be dwindling.
5. Why commit.
“Why commit..Have a halal bf/gf”
We have began dating and having long term relationships so much, it has become the ‘haram’ thing we accept. If we admit it, the guilt is slowly fading away. We are slowly but surely no longer seeing the need for a Nilkah, if we are doing Nikah it’s to ‘Halalify’ sex. Simply put, our generation is caught in a Catch 22. We want to get to know each other in-depth before marriage- but the temptation to stay away from sin gets the better of us and there ends up being no commitment at all.
It begs the question has our generation decided it’s better to sin and make no commitment, then have many Nikah’s and divorce?
