The murderous hell that was Passchendaele - 12 October 1917.
Australian troops, the survivors of senseless attacks and incessant artillery, surrounded by dead comrades.
The location today with the remnants of the light rail line.

SOMEWHERE
William Hakes was killed in action during an assault on Polygon Wood, a few miles north-east of Ypres. His body was never recovered. Firstly, we visited the Polygon Wood cemetery, around the site of the action.
We then drove a couple of miles to Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world in terms of burials. It is here where 11,961 of the fallen are buried and 34,991 more are commemorated on a series of panels on the memorial walls.
Monica, Esme and Ellis located the panel bearing William's name.
We then drove another couple of miles to Passchendaele, to the Canada Gate memorial.
It is difficult to imagine now, looking at the lush and idyllic vision around us, that during WW1, this whole surrounding area had been turned into a vast muddy terrain with no discernable buildings or living trees. It is estimated that on this battlefront, an average of 435 men died for every square metre of land being fought over.
