I love John Mills-Alec Guinness duo sm I feel much obliged to watch Tune of Glory (1960) this week. It's such a pity that AG turned down the role of Father Hugh in Ryan's Daughter when the role was especially written for him, or I'd be only too glad to see Mills and Guinness in Ryan's Daughter together (with Sarah Miles the 74' Estella no less!!!). But Trevor Howard was marvellous no doubt

Worm theory: Skitter's secret identity is Taylor Hebert

I know this sounds like a stretch but I've been rereading Worm and I think there's a lot of evidence in the story that implies it.

Taylor for those who have forgotten her actually was the first viewpoint in Worm where she expressed her desire to escape bullying and become a superhero.

As Worm began to focus on Skitter's descent into supervillainy Taylor gradually got less focus in the story but it's notable that she was the first character to appear.

There's even more evidence for the theory from the fact that her chapter wasn't an interlude though you might claim this is when Wildbow still intended it to be parahumans and not to focus on one protagonist it's still suggestive that there may be a link between Taylor and Skitter.

As well as appearing in the first chapter Taylor also appears in the final epilogue of Worm. Now you might think this rules her out being Skitter as Skitter had died at this point but the way she describes herself is reminiscent of the warlord:

“Because I’m done.  My life is over, for all intents and purposes.  No matter how hard I try from here on out, I’ll never do anything one ten–thousandth as important as what I was doing before.” “It’s not the one decision.  It’s all of them, pressing down on me.  I’m- I was a monster, Annette.”

It's hard to imagine but perhaps Skitter survived and somehow made her way to Earth Bet.

There are more scenes throughout Worm which support this theory. When Skitter is confronted by Dragon and Defiant Emma's reaction suggests her identity is someone Emma knows. Perhaps her old friend Taylor?

In Imago 21.02 there's another passage that supports this theory:

“I guess I should get around to saying it outright.  I’m a supervillain.  Crime lord of Brockton Bay.  It’s not as bad as it sounds.  Or maybe it’s worse.  I’ve saved lives.  Fought Leviathan, fought the Slaughterhouse Nine and Echidna.  I’ve also taken a life.  Fought the heroes, and hurt people who probably didn’t deserve it, just to make a point.”

Now this on a first read this would appear to be a metaphor for how Taylor is feeling but on a closer read it may imply that Taylor is actually the crimelord Skitter.

Finally when negotiating Skitter's surrender to the PRT Mr Calle's says that "In exchange, my client, Taylor Hebert, known by the alias ‘Skitter’, requests some concessions from the Protectorate, PRT and Wards.” At first I thought Calle was lying or mistaken about Skitter's identity but perhaps Taylor Herbert is who Skitter really is.

Anyway I know it's a shocking theory but keep it in mind next time you read Worm and you might find it will shed a whole new light on the story.

Tunes of Glory is like. How do you insert yourself into a group of men who have fought together and are familiar with each other and don't really want you here but are too proper to just come out and say that which makes it worse actually. All you want are some friends because you don't have any and you were in a POW camp during the war where they tortured you and you refuse to talk about it with anyone but it's why you're so jumpy and hate loud noises and you just want to belong somewhere. The only thing that got you through the torture was the thought of leading the regiment your father and grandfather led and now you've arrived and the officers all despise you. And then you decide to cut the popular major a break because he promises he'll be your friend and help you be liked by the men and he will really change if you give him a second change and he won't be mean to you anymore and then he goes and doesn't keep his promise. Like what then!
