You know, I wouldn't want to hang out with a bunch of stoned beach bums in California either and I don't think Jess should be chagrined for not wanting to join that same social scene (we probably have the sane reasons, being raised among overtly social partiers/substance abusers). Yes, he was willing to be more social in his later years, on his own terms and in a community that he chose himself. He didn't choose to go to California: he was kicked out of home because he didn't want to go back to school and he didn't have anywhere else to go and his dad had sought him out, so he went to the only place that might have him.

Just because Sasha talked Jimmy into having some mercy on the kid he abandoned doesn't mean Jess belonged there. I don't think he wanted yet another spaced out mother figure (even if this one was a functioning adult) and a not-quite-dad who was way more hostile to his presence than Luke was. Jess was a reminder of Jimmy's past and the consequence of his abandonment and a threat to his nice family life. He didn't want him there. Why should he be forced to go along with the social rules of a place that was even more annoying than the one he just left? He's an adult now and it's in his best interest to figure things out and find his own tribe....which he eventually did.

Not wanting to join a community of annoying people who don't like you much is not a flaw or a sign of immorality. Jess didn't belong in Venice any more than he did in Stars Hollow. He needed to go somewhere where people could accept him for what he was so that he could thrive.

I'm going to assume that Christopher didn't know this at first when he went back home, but after he did notice he decided to take another crack at saving Katya. Because he's got cool vampire powers now, so he can fight Count Bram.
